Speaker 1 (00:00):
Breaking down all the axes and ohs. This is I
on the Ball with Steve Rivera on Fox Sports fourteen
fifty eight.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Hey, welcome back TOY on the Ball here on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty I'm Steve Roberta, and today with me
is Ray the Controls. We're getting our guests coming in
about ten minutes. But you have some breaking news.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
This is I on the Ball breaking news on Fox
Sports fourteen.

Speaker 3 (00:27):
Fifty All right, almost to the weekend Thursday. Got the
preseason finale kicking off tonight for NFL. Yeah, just two weeks. Okay, Yeah,
it's it's the last preseason week, so that that'll be fun.

Speaker 4 (00:44):
Are you gonna use the Jacory stuff?

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Did you kind of say that lead off for that
with your uh how you told me that he you know,
he's playing really well?

Speaker 5 (00:54):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (00:54):
And they had some highlights?

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Oh yeah, so yeah. In through Twitter when I got
here trying to find some breaking news, funny enough, I
saw someone put up Arizona highlights for Jacory Krossky Merritt
and turned and it was only a minute and a half,
and I'm like, how do you pull all of that
out from one game?

Speaker 4 (01:15):
Because he was the guy for one game.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
But yeah, he really was the guy for what that
one game.

Speaker 4 (01:19):
Though, and you said, Okay, this guy's gonna be pretty.

Speaker 5 (01:22):
Good yeah, and then you don't see and everything happens.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Yeah, but he's gonna be good enough to make that team,
and that'd be used.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
That's actually been a kind of a big debate. Yeah
on Twitter, who is better?

Speaker 4 (01:35):
Who? Who?

Speaker 3 (01:36):
Who do people think is going to be a better
NFL running back? Between him and Cam Scataboo?

Speaker 4 (01:41):
Oh really? Oh I take I take him? Do you take? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Yeah, yeah, because he's going to be more usable.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
Yeah, that's fair.

Speaker 5 (01:50):
Yeah, I mean I thought it was.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
I thought it was a really good conversation because it's
one of those things where it's I mean, it's like
a great hypothetical use and I have.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
No dog in the fight. It's just kind of gonna
be used probably in special situations. Or is he gonna
be running all the time. He's just a different dude.

Speaker 5 (02:05):
Right right, different styles, different styles of runner. So that's
definitely gonna be an interesting thing.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
To you know, look at for probably the next few
years while they both try to I guess break out
in the NFL is the way to put it.

Speaker 5 (02:19):
Keep getting going with breaking news though.

Speaker 3 (02:22):
Brent Brennan's radio show except for twelve shows, is gonna
start on the August twenty fifth.

Speaker 5 (02:30):
It'll be hosted with Brian Jefferies obviously.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
Uh, and it is going to be live at Union
Public House, so that'll be that'll be interesting to see,
you know, if people want to get out there.

Speaker 5 (02:42):
This is one that when you start the twenty fifth.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Twenty fifth, Okay, we're just gonna put in.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
My calendarm calendar, that's what it's called. Asy Desert Swarm
came out with the list of football predictions today and
Brian Peterson said six, six and six.

Speaker 5 (03:05):
Kim Dawes said six and six.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
Ezra Amaker, I hope I said that right, Uh said
six and six.

Speaker 5 (03:13):
Adam Green said six and six.

Speaker 3 (03:16):
And our very lovely other sound guy, mister Goody two.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
Shoes, Well right there tells you exactly where he's gonna go.

Speaker 4 (03:24):
Mister Goody two shoes.

Speaker 5 (03:25):
Said eight and four. Optimistic, yep, and.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
He has the losses, he's got as beat as Kansas State,
and you know, yeah, yeah, why not.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Throw the game in yep? Yeah, you know. We had
Jake Fisher on two three years ago. He was regularly
on all the time. But he he came up with
the ninety three eight and we laughed at him a
few years back when they went, yeah, but he's, you know,
mister really optimistic and every dog has his day blind

(03:55):
squirrel finds him that and they found not that it's criticized.

Speaker 4 (03:57):
But he can't it came true. Yeah, yeah, who knows.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Maybe man out of what was that like seven seven?

Speaker 6 (04:06):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (04:07):
Why not? Well, yeah, I mean he's calling a shot.
You gotta you gotta love that.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Take him to King Fisher where you get a discount military.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
So, like I said, NFL preseason is kind of coming
to a close starting today Pittsburgh and Carolina. I think
probably just started or it's a bat a kick off.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
It said, he's not starting, He's not playing at all.

Speaker 3 (04:30):
No t Mac is not playing. No Rogers, Oh yeah,
I mean I don't think he should play either. Yeah,
it's a it's a tough game at forty forty.

Speaker 4 (04:39):
I think forty one to keep him in bubble rap.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Yeah exactly. I mean you really got to do that
with Matt Stafford. But we'll get to that later. New
England is always going to be playing the Giants and
that's starting at five on Amazon Prime Video. I'm assuming
Kirk Kirbstreet is going to be probably on that call,
so that's always fun. Schador Sanders is going to be
playing on Saturday, and he you know, he's not. He

(05:04):
kind of trying to cool down the whole thing that
Dylan Gabriel said, with the whole entertainer and worker thing.

Speaker 4 (05:12):
Do you think he meant it?

Speaker 5 (05:13):
I don't think he. I don't think he meant it
about him, he said, he said he mentioned.

Speaker 2 (05:17):
About the journalism and the you know, the the people
who cover the team.

Speaker 3 (05:22):
I mean, it's it's tough, right because as an aspiring journalist,
you being a little bit the KG veteran, you know,
it's tough because you know, you do try to get
a story and it's it's hard to make it interesting.
But that's kind of how you prove, like your metal is,
like you make it interesting without really blowing anything out

(05:42):
of proportion too, and and so, and you know that
that might be a little hard with door Standers, he's
a bit more I don't want to say show off,
like he doesn't entertain.

Speaker 5 (05:55):
Yeah, entertained. I wouldn't say entertained either, but you know,
he always has. He has me, he has some guys
around him, he has like an entourage.

Speaker 4 (06:02):
Sure, yeah and so.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Yeah, and you know, I it's I think it's good
that and it shows maturity that he he's trying to
downplay what his teammate said that could have or could
have not been about him. I guess in the end,
Anthony Richardson is not going to be playing in Indian
and Apolis's preseason finale. He's gonna be the second string,

(06:26):
but I guess they don't want to take the risk
even though it's gonna be Daniel Jones that is gonna be.
He got announced as the starter, I believe on yesterday
or the day before, So that'll be fun.

Speaker 5 (06:39):
This is something that I really liked.

Speaker 3 (06:40):
SEC is gonna go to a nine game conference schedule
starting in twenty twenty six. That had been a big
kind of topic of discussion since they hadn't been doing
you know, the whole conference schedule like the Big Ten.
There's been a lot of pressure I think from the
Big Ten. I know Jay he talked about it a
little bit. Well, he has talked about it a little bit,

(07:02):
So that'll be very interesting to see how it goes
with the SEC.

Speaker 5 (07:06):
Obviously it's gonna be a bit more.

Speaker 3 (07:09):
You hope that it makes it a bit more competitive
with everything going on and there, Like I said, there
was a lot of criticism about that going on from that,
but sticking with college football, Deon Sanders has set a
dress code policy for his players while they attend class.
In the quote by Bleacher Reports Twitter post, it says,

(07:32):
no slides. If I see you with a hoodie or
headphones on in class, there's going to be a problem.
You know, that's kind of coming off the backs or
the back of people kind of criticizing. You know, our
student athletes still student athletes. How much do they go
to class? I know, you know, Steve has talked to
me and Juan about it a couple of times, and
you know it's always like that. Athletes are they like,

(07:57):
you know, some athletes do online classes, not only because
they can't be there all the time right with their schedule,
but yeah, kind of stuff like that.

Speaker 5 (08:08):
Keeping it going though.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
Notre Dame football is changing their Leperchawn logo for the
first time in sixty years. Instead of the little Leprechaun
having you know, his fistballed up ready to fight, he's
carrying the football.

Speaker 5 (08:26):
Now he's running the rock.

Speaker 2 (08:27):
So I had to go outside. Don't don't be replacing me, No,
don't be. You know, welcome to the show. I'm ready host.

Speaker 5 (08:38):
But yeah, our co host is here.

Speaker 4 (08:40):
Yes, yes, I'll introduce her in a second. Continue. I
got to get her headphones.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Okay, okay, but yeah, Notre Dame had changed their logo.
Last thing we were talking about. Northwestern also reached a
settlement with former coach Pat Fitzgerald, who was fired.

Speaker 5 (08:59):
For a hazing scandal.

Speaker 3 (09:01):
So pretty much the team fired him, saying that he
was kind of letting it happen and maybe encouraging it. Obviously,
he disagreed and filed a lawsuit against the university, and
I guess it got settled. I don't know. I kind
of get it. If you if you're a head coach,
you should know what's going on in the locker room

(09:22):
and with the players. So, uh, you know, maybe it
got got away.

Speaker 5 (09:26):
With one there, but I'm not trying to say anything.
Oh this is a fun one.

Speaker 7 (09:32):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (09:33):
Sister Jean, the the the famous icon from Loyola Chicago,
turned one hundred and six today and because it's her birthday,
so happy birthday to to sister Jean.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
That's a that's a long time to be living. I
can't imagine seeing that much of Wait wait, wait wait,
Sister Jean from Loyola Chicago. No, she turned one hundred
and six.

Speaker 4 (09:55):
Oh, holy crap. You remember heard from back in the day. Yeah,
it was like the Lucky Charm one hundred and six.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
Yeah, think about what she saw you talk about phones, man, Yeah,
it's crazy stuff.

Speaker 4 (10:10):
Real quick. We got our new guest here.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
She's kind of a sports fan kind of she does
all this stuff all over the U of A and stuff.

Speaker 4 (10:17):
Crystal, how you doing.

Speaker 9 (10:18):
I'm good, I'm good. Steve, how you doing?

Speaker 4 (10:20):
We're doing? I saw you last week twice in a week.

Speaker 9 (10:23):
I know it, and the same this week, Nucky you.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
I know it, and then again Friday. We'll get to
what Crystal's up to on the other side.

Speaker 9 (10:30):
Uh do you know Pete Williams sounds familiar.

Speaker 4 (10:33):
Former U of A guy. We'll talk to if you
if you end early. You have a lot of stuff. No, no,
we can go grease through.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
Okay, So Crystal, Crystal is give me your give me
your official title.

Speaker 4 (10:44):
With the I f L.

Speaker 9 (10:45):
So I am the director of marketing and new business
for the Tucson Sugar Schools and the Arizona Rattlers. And
then because we are hosting the game this year, I'm
basically the legs on the ground for the i f
L when it comes to the.

Speaker 2 (10:59):
National and those legs are running around the city trying
to convince people to go to the game.

Speaker 9 (11:04):
Convincing people to go to the game, handing out tickets
to get people to go to the game. The one
thing that I continue to say is that we like
cool stuff, right, Tucson, Yes, Tucson. We like when cool
things happen here, especially when it comes to sports. Because
I've said this a lot, and I'm gonna keep saying this.
In the past, Tucson has been burned by sports.

Speaker 3 (11:23):
Right.

Speaker 9 (11:23):
We've had some great things here that have been taken
from us. And so what I'm trying to convey to
not only the business community but to fans is if
we want cool things like this to happen, we need
to attend these things. And the tickets are very affordable.
We've got a free tailgate tomorrow before our Saturday excuse me,
before the game, We're gonna highlight Sunnyside Mariachi's gonna be there,
Folklodigal is going to be there. We're gonna have all

(11:45):
of the mascots there for both teams, and then the
Arizona mascots. So we're trying to make this as big
as possible. And my goal, because there's no Arizona teams
in this game, we're gonna highlight Tucson. We're gonna show
you just how cool our gem of a city is
and how much we love it and bring a little
bit of what we love about this city to that
national stage.

Speaker 2 (12:05):
So, Chris, so you're pounding the pavement. We pound it
on the air because we talk about that all the time,
right when we have Blake eager On talk about how
Tucson can make itself better if it shows up for things. Yes,
because you're right, and it's a cool city. You need
to show up and show out because you're right. If
you don't, guess what, we're.

Speaker 9 (12:25):
Not going to get these games anymore. And I respect
it because I understand two sons a very blue collar town.
We work hard for our money here. I one hundred
percent understand that. So we knowing that, are trying to
put the best experience, best game possible so that your
hard earned money is well worth it when you leave
this game, even if you don't have a dog in
the fire, right, You're not cheering for Vegas, You're not

(12:46):
cheering for Green Bay. You just want a good time.
Our goal putting this game together is to make you
leave and go. Man, we should catch a Sugar Schools
game next year. That was pretty awesome.

Speaker 4 (12:55):
And if it's a great game and you were there,
I was there one.

Speaker 9 (12:58):
Hundred percent, you know you want to miss it, right?

Speaker 6 (13:00):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (13:01):
Yeah, right. It's kind of like the Arizonable game. If
you if you say, oh, you know Snoop DOGG. Yeah, yeah,
Oh damn, I wish you would have done.

Speaker 9 (13:07):
The one thing I keep talking about with the Arizonable
the Snoop Dog Arizona Ble too, is that if you
were at that game, you felt the energy. Yeah, you
felt the good vibes. I mean the whole day was
just vibes, gin and juice, good people, football, Snoop Dog
And so again, how many people showed up to that
forty thousand people? What an incredible show out for the

(13:29):
Snoop DOGG Arizona Ble. Obviously we can't fit forty thousand
inside the two Soon Arena, but we would love to
get five to seven thousand people. And I know we're
competing against Arizona Athletics. Again, I understand that this is
not so much Saturday.

Speaker 4 (13:41):
I mean not so much Saturday.

Speaker 9 (13:42):
He's just volleyball, right, I think there's a volleyball game.

Speaker 5 (13:45):
Makes sense.

Speaker 9 (13:46):
Yeah, So for US seven thirty kickoff a national stage.
We're doing a Madiaci national anthem, local performers again, highlighting
our city. How cool it really is?

Speaker 2 (13:57):
So yeah, no, no, it's important. Uh And I'm sure
the businesses are trying to help you. You're asking the
businesses to help you.

Speaker 9 (14:04):
Well, we're trying to keep people downtown too. So the
Downtown Tucson Partnership has been amazing. Working with Rio Nauevo
has been fantastic. They really are putting as much support
as possible. So no pressure.

Speaker 4 (14:19):
Yeah, I'm in the really fairerle and visit.

Speaker 1 (14:22):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (14:22):
Yeah, so you know they have some steak, but they
also if they want to continue, if we want them
to continue to have steak, this has to kind of
be good.

Speaker 9 (14:32):
We have it for two more years, right, But in reality,
if we're only selling less than a thousand tickets. Do
you think they're gonna be like, yes, kind of back here?

Speaker 4 (14:39):
Wha Right?

Speaker 9 (14:40):
So no, it's we really are putting the pressure on
the fans to come out, and and I hate even
saying pressure, because you're gonna have a good time. We're
gonna make sure you're gonna have a good time. We've
got lots of food specials, drink specials, like we're going
to make sure that this is a party here in.

Speaker 4 (14:54):
The old Pueblo, right right, how many?

Speaker 2 (14:56):
Well, now that you're inside the if the call is
calling from inside the room like you are, it's a
cool place to be for indoor game, even for people
have never been to a game.

Speaker 9 (15:06):
Yeah, and let me remind everybody too. Everything is indoors, right,
it's the Indoor Football League. There was no way we
were going to put the tailgate outside. That just wouldn't
make sense for any indoor football league. So everything is indoors.
And then we have our after party plan that's going
to be at the Monica Downtown as soon as the
game is over. Obviously the team that wins is going
to be hosting it, but Monica is going to open

(15:27):
up their doors for us to have the official ifl
after party again, everything within walking discorsier.

Speaker 4 (15:34):
Okay, so hold that thought. We're gonna get a hold
of pet Williams.

Speaker 2 (15:36):
We're gonna talk more with Crystal after we talked to
Pete and the guys. We're gonna be here this weekend too,
so maybe we get some guys real quick.

Speaker 2 (20:11):
Hey, welcome back to ye in the ball here, I'll
talk Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera in today with
me Crystal Pina.

Speaker 9 (20:18):
You know, like the wine without the teeth, but I'll
bring the tea.

Speaker 2 (20:21):
Yes, yes, just don't do it publicly.

Speaker 4 (20:26):
A live mic though.

Speaker 2 (20:27):
We got Ray on the on the mic here too,
and now we've got Pete Williams the cornerstone off UA
basketball back in the day.

Speaker 4 (20:34):
Pete, how are you?

Speaker 6 (20:36):
I'm doing great? Man. It's like you guys have a
good old time down there.

Speaker 4 (20:39):
We are we are? Are you love it right now?
It's yeah.

Speaker 2 (20:43):
So you're in town for a big, big deal here
with lud Olshan. You love coming back to Tucson.

Speaker 6 (20:48):
Oh yeah, you just give me a reason I'm here, man,
And you know this is a and I'm being seriously,
this is like the highlight of year for some of us.
I mean, because it's such a such a stress event.
And you know as well as I do, that the
thing is kind of morphed into something bigger than we
ever would have thought, as far as the friendships that
have developed between the coaches and the players and the

(21:10):
players and the players, and it's just a nice thing
to be a part of.

Speaker 4 (21:13):
Did you when you first got here?

Speaker 2 (21:15):
I think, well, in the camp twenty seventeen eighteen, right,
did you sense did you sense that the people who
were in the camp, not you guys, but the players
were kind of intimidated, a little shy and blah blah blah.
And now how has it turned to too.

Speaker 6 (21:33):
I wouldn't say intimidated at all, nor would I even
say shy. It was just I think a lot of
it also is the character of a lot of players.
The Coach Show had this program, you know, everybody so personal,
you know, and respectful and everything. And when you're that way,
it's easy for people to approach you. And I think

(21:53):
that played a part of part of it as well.
But come on, man, you know as well as I do,
this is just a great event.

Speaker 2 (21:58):
Yeah yeah, you guys are great, you and Donelle and Bennett,
you know, the goofy guys. Uh, mule Box I talked
to him today and just the regular dudes. Uh.

Speaker 4 (22:09):
And now you're just want to you're just one of
the one of the dudes with them.

Speaker 6 (22:13):
Yeah. Well, you know, I was gonna say a little,
but I've changed that to a lot. A lot of
the comedy is gonna be gone because you know, Joe
Turner and Craig mcmiller won't be here, so you know,
those are comedic geniuses there, so they keep me incises.
But we'll still find a way to have a good time.

Speaker 2 (22:28):
Yeah, yeah, no question. What's been your favorite moments? Uh
in the camp? And I'll loose no longer with us.
And I know how close you you two were. Uh
maybe a couple of quick moments.

Speaker 6 (22:41):
Hey, what this would be easy, you know, winning the
championship year one, win the championship year two, the championship
year three. That's true, But now I hit a little lowd. Man.
I haven't got running with four years now, Man, so
I hope. I'm looking forward to get back on track.
But I'm glad it's something that Coach got to be
a part of for for a few years. I know,
you know, he really enjoyed it and everything. So I'm

(23:01):
glad he got the experience that, you know, and you know,
hopefully we can continue this thing. You know, I don't
I don't know what the future looks like or whatever,
but I'm just saying, well, he got the experience for
for a few years.

Speaker 4 (23:13):
Yeah, well, no question.

Speaker 2 (23:14):
When Mike and I decided to do this and we
went to him and he says, what do you think
about this?

Speaker 4 (23:19):
And he says, oh, yes, I love talking to my guys.

Speaker 2 (23:22):
Bring him back, and you know, I love the guys
and and you know, you know, for the first four
years whatever it was, he was there and and loving
all you guys because you guys were telling jokes on
him and telling stories.

Speaker 6 (23:35):
Yeah, he's a special man, no doubt.

Speaker 4 (23:38):
Do you remember the first the first meeting.

Speaker 2 (23:40):
I think we're somewhere on Oracle maybe the Bird Place
of the Chicken Place, and everybody got two minutes to
talk about Coach and Ben Ben Davis took like thirteen.

Speaker 6 (23:50):
Oh yeah, you know what I was. I was really
happy to see that now he went way over time
because you know, I think me and Bennes maybe like
eight or nine years difference or something like that. So
I'm knowing, but I didn't really knowing nor don't really
know the obviously. I know he cared about Coach Hulst
and we all do, but I didn't know the depths
of it. So he just could have went on and

(24:11):
on and on. Because I love listening to people you
talk about coach and even myself. I have to watch
myself because I tend to get little emotional when I'm
talking about him. So I enjoyed being he went on
for quite a while. He sure did.

Speaker 2 (24:22):
Yeah, yeah, no question uh anything and it will be
besides your victories because you've you've had that anything else,
because are you healthy now?

Speaker 4 (24:31):
Are you bet to be normal?

Speaker 6 (24:33):
I'm fine. I mean, you know, my bones are long heels.
But you know this year I still have Stevens with
you know, all that metal they put my leg, it
still affects the nerves. So that's something I've just got
to deal with. I've gotten used to it. It's nonstopped.
Intensity is a little it can get a little great
at times or whatever. Base I feel like I'm walking
with rocks in my shoes on the bottom on my
left foot. They put so much metal and nails and

(24:54):
screws and what have you. But other than that, the
bones are stable. But it don't really matter because I
ain't trying to hoop no more anyway.

Speaker 4 (25:00):
Right right?

Speaker 6 (25:02):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (25:03):
What else could before?

Speaker 2 (25:04):
I want to go to talk about Tommy because I
think Tommy's going to be there tonight. Uh anything else
about the camp? You're just looking forward to it. Obviously
there's gonna be the guys here tonight.

Speaker 6 (25:13):
Well, the well, the curiosity also as far as, uh,
who's going to be the new guy? I mean, because
there's always somebody new. You know, we are we know
what the returners can do, yes, but uh, you know
they could be like a little somebody trying to set
you up and think somebody is not that really good.
But you know, I'm a pretty good good gauge of
when somebody's you know, just trying to pull a wool
over your eyes or whatever. But I just want to

(25:34):
see who the new guys are, and uh if somebody
think they got him on their covers and be nice
if I can steal him if that's the case.

Speaker 4 (25:40):
Right of course, of course.

Speaker 2 (25:41):
And then now about the team, because you love Tommy
and you love the program.

Speaker 6 (25:46):
Right right, I don't. I don't know, like anybody. You know,
the names look great on paper, but you still got
to go out there and produce. And uh, you know,
they they are young, but I don't. I don't use
that because they're young and talented, and it seems like
he has a pretty sharp group, you know, from what
I've been able to read so far and whatever little
cliffs I've seen, so uh, we're gonna have a good year.

(26:10):
But the thing I just want people to cost themselves
and understand that while we will be good, other schools
good great players is exactly, it's not just everybody gets
good players. So it's just a matter of if they're
able to mold in jail and come together and then
you know what the end product told what it's going.

Speaker 4 (26:27):
To be, no question.

Speaker 2 (26:29):
I don't think people know that enough is oh we're
going to be good, and they don't look beyond their
you know, the.

Speaker 6 (26:34):
Blinkers exactly exactly, you know, not be real quickly. A
lot of times we say well if so, and so
out of stay in school, and so and sot to
stay in school, and this guy the same school, we
be unfeatable. Well guess what, so many other schools can
say the exact same thing.

Speaker 4 (26:47):
You know, right, Crystal. I don't know if you know.

Speaker 2 (26:50):
You don't know Pete right, but he's one of the
big time old older guys that started with Loot right
Crystal's voice.

Speaker 9 (26:56):
I do the end game hosting for Arizona women's basketball,
and then I've done a few of them.

Speaker 2 (27:02):
Men.

Speaker 9 (27:02):
I did the Duke game.

Speaker 4 (27:03):
I was the end game host, right, please to hear that?

Speaker 9 (27:06):
Yeah, bear down, What do you think did you grow up?

Speaker 4 (27:10):
You grew up here?

Speaker 9 (27:11):
Kind of necess No, I grew up in Colorado, but
I was very familiar with the basketball world. So when
you guys won the championship, I remember, I remember being
because I would come down for spring training being like yes, finally, right,
like yes, Wildcats got that win that they've been gunning for.
So the history obviously remains, because anytime you talk about

(27:31):
the program with anybody, that's what they talk about is
those those great years under Loop.

Speaker 2 (27:35):
Well Pete, uh, yeah, go ahead, pereat right, Well, Pete
was part of that group we're trying to win the title,
the first title, the first Pac ten title back in
the eighty three, eighty four or eighty four or five.

Speaker 4 (27:48):
Back in the old day. Sorry, I'm right with you,
so I can say the old days too.

Speaker 6 (27:53):
It's been forty years, man, I know, I know that's incredible.

Speaker 9 (27:58):
It is incredible, because I guarantee it doesn't feel like that,
doesn't I bet you. It feels like you just got
done playing basketball last week.

Speaker 6 (28:06):
You know, That's what it feels like. You know, like
Curis is like certainly the current players on this team.
Like if I want to meet some of the current
oh you know he played back in like eighty five,
and they would say like, okay, that's forty years ago. Wow,
So I think back like if I was playing eighty
five and somebody told me about a player played there
forty years ago, See, that would be nineteen forty.

Speaker 4 (28:25):
Five, man, right, right.

Speaker 2 (28:27):
But if you saw Pete and Crystal, he looks like
he can still play, but despite his legs, because he
he have you seen how often have you seen Cole
Pete physically?

Speaker 6 (28:37):
I've only seen no video. I've never seen him. I've
seen no video.

Speaker 4 (28:40):
I don't want to see.

Speaker 2 (28:41):
I don't want to say you guys to have the
similar build, but you kind of do.

Speaker 4 (28:44):
He's just taller, he's just twelve.

Speaker 6 (28:47):
Well okay, but I was nothing like that size when
I was here.

Speaker 4 (28:50):
Oh no, oh no, you're a skinny guy. But you
do what now? You do it? Now you have that.

Speaker 9 (28:55):
Yeah, I'm curious what your thoughts are when it comes
to athletes today, especially at the caliber that they're at
with Arizona men's basketball. What advice do you have for
them because of all these new different, you know, things
that are happening with the league and with the Nils
and all of that thing. Because I feel like the
one thing that resonates in my head is get out
of your own way.

Speaker 2 (29:14):
Well, let's preface this, because she doesn't know your past
history in terms of what you did for a living.

Speaker 4 (29:20):
Because he has a different perspective.

Speaker 6 (29:21):
Oh well, for me, I was just you know, as
far as these guys today, I'm not gonna bash or
anything like that. And it's easy for me to say
as far as preaching patients because unfortunately, the society living
out is the micro wave society. Everything. Everybody wants everything now,
you know, And I think sometimes these guys sell themselves

(29:42):
short the grants and now where's greener with all the transferring,
leaving the leaving the gos to the league early. You know,
I just wish, you know, they would just see the
bigger picture and again, as far as they be, you know,
they're drafting on potential. You know, how many times do
you Carter Brant, for instance, Oh he's not ready. We
know he's not ready either, scouse know he's not ready.
He's not being drafted to be ready. Now they see

(30:04):
something special with him in two or three years down
the road. That being said, I still wish stay with
practice patients. And it's not about loyalty, but it's like
building a legacy.

Speaker 4 (30:14):
You know, I played here.

Speaker 6 (30:16):
I played there two grand off the jugo transfer. I
played there two years. I would have played it forever
if I could have or whatever. But in the two
years that I was here, I think I left a
pretty good legacy where you know, some of these guys
come and have a good pressman year and they're gone.
Were you really here? I mean, that's kind of the
way I look at. Legacy somewhere is important to me,
you know.

Speaker 2 (30:35):
Yeah, no question what I was going for with what
you used to do was he was a probation officer
forever and he just retired, so he has a different.

Speaker 4 (30:44):
Feel for kids, you know, you know, the appreciation.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
Of what you have today. Am I incorrect in saying that?

Speaker 6 (30:51):
No, I mean you're you're absolutely right, And a lot
of it, you know, with me is just trying to,
number one, be the best professional role model that I
could be. Even as that particular feel sometimes things go
from zero two or one hundred and that professor will
get thrown out the window. But it's basically, you know,
try to teach young people to make smarter decision. Everybody
makes mistakes and you're going to prospect, you learn if

(31:14):
you're able to learn from your mistakes. But unfortunately, and
the client tell that I did with you know, there's
there's so many of them that we do what we
can for them when we have them locked up or whatever,
but you know, more times than not, we send them
right back to the same environment they came from, which
is not a good thing. You know, they need to
get away, and some are able to, but some just
you know, stay and just continue that lifestyle. So I'm

(31:35):
a big component of being a role model living my
life as positive I can be in a lot of
that comes from Coach Osten, you know. I you know,
I like to say I have like a healthy obsession
with Coach Osten. And I made a vow Steve when
I'm back, even if you know, I don't like talking
about this about you know, when I broke the curfew
and Washington back in eighty five and just saw not
that he was mad at me, the fact that he
was disappointed in me, That's what hurt more than anything.

(31:56):
And I made a bow to you know, live my
life in a matter that Coach host would never he
disappointed me in life. Again, we also it's once somebody
is mad at you, for somebody to care about mere
disappointed y'all. Man, that's things right.

Speaker 2 (32:09):
He tells the story if he told me the story
a few times because I was asking him, and so
when Luke said you can you explain yourself and blah
blah blah, he didn't even look at him.

Speaker 6 (32:17):
Oh man, because everybody else. He looked him dead to eye.
As soon as I ope my mouth, he looked at
the ground. Oh Steve, I just wanted to die, man.

Speaker 4 (32:26):
Yeah, yeah, right, Pete.

Speaker 3 (32:29):
So I saw that you played for Galat Saray back
in the day.

Speaker 6 (32:34):
Oh wait wait, wait, wait wait, come on say that again,
Glass Array glass Yuh you put it that word galatea
Galat Tessaa.

Speaker 3 (32:43):
Sorry, that's a tough one. But I was just wondering, what, like,
what do you think? Well, first of all, did you
play against the like kind of younger people, like against
younger people.

Speaker 6 (32:56):
Younger people?

Speaker 3 (32:57):
Yeah, just because like you know, you see you see
a couple guys like Ivan Karchenkov, CD guy or Yia
for the incoming freshmen, and then you see other stories
kind of like uh, you see you know Luka played.

Speaker 4 (33:11):
Uh he's talking.

Speaker 6 (33:13):
About Lucas totally totally different. But you know, we all
these teams and I played for Friendobach and I left
Frinabatchi to go to Gula Tusster Ride. And that's something
you just don't do because Frindobacia as big as anybody,
you just don't do that. But you know, for whatever reason,
I did leave for about two years to go to
Color tust A Raid. But all these programs have junior teams,
and we have some really good players there own the
junior team. Nobody at that age was playing in the

(33:35):
Division One League because I was playing at that time.
You know, there was some talent, but we still had
other other Turks of the European guys that were really good.
But nobody's that young making any type of impact in
the Division one League of any of those countries.

Speaker 3 (33:49):
Okay, yeah, I was just gonna ask if you see, like,
if you notice any differences between kind of those guys
that grow up kind of in those youth academies compared
to the guys that end up coming out of high
school here from the US.

Speaker 6 (34:01):
Well, I will say this, I still think, you know,
because hey, two of day practices were the norm either waiting,
you know, especially back then or whatever. And you think
about the Europeans fundamentals, they not so much about, you know,
the flash. Some of them could get down a little
bit and this and that. But it seems like a
lot of our guys here they want to, you know,
gi Gia sake sake, break somebody's ankle. But you missed

(34:22):
a shot. But everybody's a plug because you broke somebody's ankle.
Not literally good figure to me. You know, that's just stupid.
I wish we'd just get back to the fundamentals and
you know, they they taken more serious over there, you know,
they take practice more serious. And then they get up
get off on rentfore I started bascinating, but I don't
want so.

Speaker 1 (34:40):
You know.

Speaker 9 (34:40):
It's something that I've heard too in the world of
collegiate sports when it comes to you know, American players
and international players, especially with this generation, is when your
international players get two minutes, right, their parents are calling
the players like you better take advantage of those two minutes,
like what are you doing? Why why aren't you getting more?

(35:00):
Their parents are calling the coach why are you giving
them only two minutes?

Speaker 6 (35:11):
And then you often know, one of the one of
the most one of the most wordsome things is when
the game is over, that ride home and it doesn't
have to be it could be at a junior level
of just regular recreation ball at the park that has
the league or whatever. You know, some again they're living
extra vicaracy through their kids or whatever, because that's that's
just the brutal time. You know, my son, when I
was coaching this ANETA, we didn't we didn't talk ball

(35:33):
on the way home, you know, whether he had a
great game or a bad game or whatever. All I
wanted to do is work hard or whatever.

Speaker 9 (35:38):
You know.

Speaker 6 (35:38):
But that's a brutal time for kids with some parents
that ride home after a game.

Speaker 4 (35:42):
Let me change the gear real quick.

Speaker 2 (35:44):
So in the NI world today, how much would Williams
be making?

Speaker 6 (35:51):
Oh, well, we'd have to be able to do some
comparisons to like, you know, Uh, let's just for instance,
say what what's like? Uh, I'll keep it modest. What's
like five hundred thousand worth? Now would that be like
what maybe honed? Maybe? You know, Hey, they just gave
me a little contract of egs for sandwiches I'd have
been having.

Speaker 9 (36:07):
Right, you can give me that month.

Speaker 2 (36:10):
I'm uh right, right, I wanted to take one. We
got about a minute left. I wanted you to talk
about the relationship you had with Loot, but you were
already gone. You had been drafted in Denver and you
were working out in Denver and that day. Uh explain,
I don't want to give it all the way.

Speaker 6 (36:31):
No, Well, you know, I I made the team, so
it was our right before the regular season started, we
had an open practice scrimmage for the public, you know,
so it was official I'd made the team or whatever.
And uh, during the scrimmage, you know, I had a
discrimmage to it. After the scrimmage, all the fans at
the Kuana court take pictures and sign in autographs. I'm
signing autographs and my head was down as I'm signing,

(36:53):
and all of a sudden, I heard this voice and say,
you know, can I be next? And you know, I
know the voice and I look up and he's just
standing right there in front of me, grinted, and dude,
I was. I was done with speechless because I had
no idea used have to be there. Obviously, they must
have let him know that I had made the team
or whatever, and he was there for the scrimmage. I
don't know if he's coming from Tucson, He's just coming

(37:13):
from somewhere else, but the bottom line, he was there,
and dude, I was. I was sterned. I was thrilled everything,
you know, and We're done, showered up and everything, and
then I went out to dinner, and dude.

Speaker 1 (37:25):
It was.

Speaker 6 (37:25):
This is one of the most one of the most
touching experiences I've ever had because it was so unexpected.
But knowing coach all the way we do now, I
guess it should have been expected.

Speaker 9 (37:35):
You know, it just goes to tell you the impact
of a coach. I coached high school levels and club levels,
and I still have my girls coming to me today.
It really is a testament. So what an incredible.

Speaker 6 (37:46):
I'm glad I make this thrill quick. I'm glad you
said that because one of the things and I used
to talk to my son and other young kids this
and that. I just don't know if kids today, and
I'm going to a few years back now, if kids
today we veer their core, which is the way we did.
Specifically me, my high school coaches, my juco coach, my
assistant high school coach lives in the same city as

(38:07):
I do. Coach Barnsworth is probably seventy six, seventy seven,
and he was our defensive guy, intense, like you wouldn't believe.
All my defensive fundamentals come from him. We will be
in Alberson to this day and see each other in
the aisle and the first thing he does, he breaks
down a defensive stands and starts flying up and down
the aisle. Incredible. I love that dude.

Speaker 4 (38:27):
Where's the big chicken. Where's the big chicken? I gotta
find hey, Pete. We'll see it a bit thanks a
bunch man. All right, all right, you guys take care.

Speaker 6 (38:36):
Thanks for having me, all right.

Speaker 4 (38:38):
I fell my hosts.

Speaker 2 (38:42):

awards for like best Mascot, best crowd, best you know,
all that stuff that's happening tomorrow night. And again we're

(43:51):
keeping all of it downtown because we want to show
just how cool downtown Twoson is. And so Saturday we
have the tailgateing off at four fifteen. It's a free
tail gate indoors we have welcomed, or I should say
we have invited Mariachi's from Sunnyside and Tucson High to perform,
Folkalodigos to perform. We're having almost every single radio station

(44:15):
cluster out there to be a part of this. We
have the Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl coming out of visit
Tucson Old Tucson Comic Con because that's next weekend. Again,
our point is to bring these fans from Green Bay
and these fans from Vegas back outside of this game.

Speaker 6 (44:31):
Right.

Speaker 2 (44:31):
We talk about this all the time with Blake and
other people were Ray Floyer's obviously of his el chorro
group here, how everyone is starting to, if not has
been pulling the rope on the same direction. Everybody's helping
everybody because that's how it should be.

Speaker 9 (44:47):
We have to.

Speaker 2 (44:48):
You've been here long enough to see that. It probably
wasn't at the time, but now it is.

Speaker 9 (44:51):
Well, it's funny people always talk about all the different
hands we have in the sports, right.

Speaker 2 (44:55):
Well, you were there last week right for the thing,
and that was kind of.

Speaker 9 (44:57):
A perfect example, totally perfect example. We constantly have people
coming being like, oh, aren't they competition? No, none of
these sports teams are our competition. If they're doing really well,
that means we're going to do really, really well. We
want the road Runners to do well, we want the
Snoop Dogg Arizona Bowl to do well. We want you
of A obviously to do well. For us, if all
of our sports teams here are thriving in some capacity,

(45:21):
whether it's having jam packed games or a winning season,
that's good for the sports community here and for us.
With the Indoor Football League, everybody considers summertime a down
season here in Tucson, So for us, we're like, okay,
down season, come inside of the AC if you're still
here and be a part of what I like to
call everybody's like, what are you compared to? If I've
never been? What is an indoor football game? Like I say,

(45:44):
NFL meets WWE action drama in your face. You might
get a player smashed into your face and catch a ball,
throw the player back, keep the ball like. It's very
high energy, high intensity. And then of course I know
you've seen what happened with the Rattlers and Conference. That
is the drama I'm talking about. I was watching it live,

(46:15):
I was there. I was up there. So first of all,
when the play happened, let me just say, when the
play happened, you felt the air stuck out of that room.
You immediately felt everybody in there go, oh my gosh,
this could decide our game. Even though we saw what
we thought we saw, which we're finding out was true.
Off sides, players, emotion, all these things, it was like

(46:38):
that drama that I'm talking about, like, oh my gosh,
this game could be overturned. This is crazy. And then
after the game was over and it was clear that
the Rattlers did not win, I mean all of us
were like we'd see coach and we'd be like run,
but it wasn't us on replay like oh my gosh.
But I get why he's so passionate about it. There's
one thing about Coach Guy when it comes to the

(46:59):
i FL, Well, this is his baby just.

Speaker 2 (47:01):
As much as it as.

Speaker 9 (47:02):
Everybody else is. He wants this league to be successful.
He wants things to be done right right because the
last thing we want is, oh, there's there's no truth
in there and it's rigged, and no it's not. And
that's what I think for him, that energy came from that,
that passion was like, hap, like this can happen, right,
Come to a game and you guys will see stuff
like this all the time. I know you've been to

(47:23):
several games. I have literally been halftime and I'm like, oh, man,
scores fifty seven to twenty four, this game's over.

Speaker 4 (47:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 9 (47:29):
Four minutes later it's like fifty seven to fifty three.
The balls on the ten ten yard line and it's like,
oh my gosh, this is the drama that I love.

Speaker 4 (47:37):
Right.

Speaker 2 (47:38):
No, No, I think the analogy WWE and football is
pretty accurate. Yes, SmackDown on you have something at stake,
and you guys did have something at stake with that game,
big time. And then the Sugar Schools were better this
year and they're competitive. Yes, so we had coach onto.
We'll see what happens. I mean, it should be fun,

(47:58):
should be should be good. You're going to be busy
the next few hours.

Speaker 9 (48:00):
I'm excited to see these teams because if you've been
paying attention to both of them, this is I mean,
obviously I think the Rallers would have been great in
it too, But like the Vegas Green Bay matchup is
going to be intense and there's some Tucson Ties when
it comes to the Vegas team, right, Yeah, we've talked
about him. Former coaches from the Sugar Skulls are are Yeah,
are a part of this. So there's a little bit

(48:21):
of drama. I keep saying that, but there is. There's
a little bit of drama. So on top of the
excitement and energy from the game that Green Bay and
Vegas is going to bring, there's still a little bit
of like, oh.

Speaker 4 (48:33):
Uh huh, yeah, that's what I saw. You need the bark,
drama come down to.

Speaker 9 (48:41):
Yeah, I love it. I think that's for me. What
I love about indoor football is that it's not what
you think it's going to be. You you hear football
and you're like, oh, cool football game, so check that out.
And then all of a sudden you get hit in
the face with the ball and you're like, oh.

Speaker 6 (48:53):
My god, I gotta keep it too.

Speaker 9 (48:55):
I don't know if you saw it. The last game,
I got pummeled. I was trying to film a touchdown
own pass. I have the great I mean, it's coming,
balls come into my shot, boom player knocks me down.
I mean the video of it's hilarious. I'm all about
self deprecation. So I'm like playing it on repeat for everybody, like,
do you guys see this? But that's what I'm talking about.
If you're around the edge, you're just as much in

(49:17):
the game as the players are. The refs launched me,
he launched me. It was like all you saw was
short red hair and Flailing's gonna be on.

Speaker 4 (49:28):
The promos year.

Speaker 5 (49:31):
Coming once of sugar stilts get in the accent.

Speaker 4 (49:33):
Yeah, yeah, I was.

Speaker 2 (49:34):
Gonna say, oh no, no, no, no, let me.

Speaker 9 (49:38):
Tell you about the mascots. One of the mascots is
like a daredevil. He's gonna be coming here and he's
bringing a trampoline to do like some stunts with the
other mascot. So definitely looking forward to see the uh,
the back and forth between our mascots. It's like a
challenge for both of them. Like, great, there's a football game,
but the mascots are competing too.

Speaker 4 (49:57):
I don't I don't know. You know, radio is really
got a minute left, probably less than a minute now.

Speaker 17 (50:02):
Lots.

Speaker 7 (50:03):
You know this.

Speaker 4 (50:05):
I love my show. I love it.

Speaker 2 (50:06):
It takes two ours, but it goes fast when you
have great guests and boom, it's sober.

Speaker 1 (50:10):
You know.

Speaker 9 (50:10):
Thank you.

Speaker 4 (50:11):
You do your good music, and you're thinking, what did
I show? I shaved my eggs for this?

Speaker 9 (50:14):
I know what is? What is this about?

Speaker 6 (50:15):
It?

Speaker 9 (50:15):
My hair? Well, I'm grateful for letting me come and
talk about this, trying to get the people a Tucson
out there. I hope we get to see everybody at
the free tail game.

Speaker 4 (50:23):
Well, no, you're gonna have to come in more and
talk sports.

Speaker 9 (50:25):
I'm all for it, especially when the seasons get in
full swing.

Speaker 2 (50:28):
You have two great questions to Pete. I'm thinking would
have asked those questions it.

Speaker 9 (50:33):
I love it.

Speaker 4 (50:33):
You have some experience with the groups.

Speaker 2 (50:35):
Thank you, Thank you you Saturday, Yes, Saturday, indeed with
all the pizza to seven thousand you're hoping for, please possible.

Speaker 9 (50:44):
