Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is I on the ball on Fox Sports fourteen fifty.
Want to take part in the show? Call up Steve
now went five to two oh four one six seventy.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Four hope by telling the ball here on Fox Sports
fourteen fifteen. I'm Steve, You're Dave. I think we've got
a call. Is this Jake?

Speaker 3 (00:22):
It's the Jay, but I've got Jamean.

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Dolor standing fantastic? Thank you Jay, Jayden? How are you
going to hand them to the phone?

Speaker 3 (00:28):
Okay, how are you doing?

Speaker 2 (00:30):
How you doing? Jay? And welcome back? Welcome back to Tucson.

Speaker 4 (00:33):
Oh, thank you, thank you, appreciate it, thank you for
having me.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Couldn't be any better for Jaden Dolaura. Right, you know
you've been here before. You you you won the game here.
Now you're coming back for hopefully for you a repeat performance.

Speaker 5 (00:46):
Oh yes, I mean that's the plan. I hope we
execute that plan.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
So we'll see. Tell me, I listened to you a
little bit with Justin a couple of mornings ago. Were
you out for a little while and then they found
you and you came back? How was your career here?
How did it happen?

Speaker 4 (01:03):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (01:03):
So after left Arizona went to the UFL San Antonio
Middleweight San Antonio. Midway through the season, was there about
three four weeks. Ended up getting released with the starting
quarterback coming back. So I actually went back home for
about a year. And you know, I actually got a
call from the head coach here at Tucson probably two

(01:25):
weeks after I got released, and you know, I just
didn't have the love for it again. I just kind
of shut down, I would say.

Speaker 4 (01:34):
Went back home for about.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
A year, went back home.

Speaker 5 (01:36):
Hang out with my family, My brothers, started coaching my
brother's basketball games, took over the basketball team, and that
just brought my competitive edge back.

Speaker 4 (01:46):
And I knew that I wasn't done playing.

Speaker 5 (01:48):
So the opportunity presented itself when coach might gave me
a call again, I thought, why not Vegas. I have
a lot of family up in Vegas. A lot of
people in Hawaii moved to Vegas, and it was time
to kind of get out of Hawaii because the pockets
were running a little dry from the prices over thereselves.

Speaker 6 (02:05):
Right, What's what's it like to make this transition to
this style of football?

Speaker 2 (02:10):
I mean, is it basically.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
The I would say, it's the.

Speaker 5 (02:16):
It's similar, like I said, the field is smaller, you
got three less guys on defense, I would say it's
kind of easier to distinguish coverages because you only can
run so much with five guys and coverages, you know,
especially with all the rules that are set in play
that the.

Speaker 4 (02:32):
Defense has to do unless they get penalized.

Speaker 5 (02:34):
You know, so once understanding the speed of the game,
the rules of the game, and then all the concepts
and what it's trying to be attacked offensively, then you know,
it kind of slows it down for the quarterback and
makes it easier, especially when I got receivers, the O
line and running back that does what they do, so
just got to get them the ball.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
It seemed that the game would fit you perfectly. You're
kind of an ad lib guy in the nice legs,
A nice arm can do both. It depends on the situation.
Does it fit you? Well, no, I got it all.

Speaker 4 (03:09):
My arm is too strong. This field is too.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Small, so okay, wow, I would have never thought that. Okay,
cool reason.

Speaker 6 (03:16):
Yeah, So do you look at this as maybe just
a quick, short time thing and and and getting back
onto that.

Speaker 5 (03:23):
Is that is the plan. That is the plan, especially
coming into this yere I knew the the pay really
wasn't what it sure easy to be able to sustain,
you know what I mean. So I just want to
use this opportunity to get myself back outdoor again.

Speaker 7 (03:41):
Was there a specific game when you were coaching your
brother's basketball team that like you noticed the fire come
back maybe comparatively to to other games.

Speaker 5 (03:53):
No, I'd probably say watching his game before we even
started coaching. That was my first time I got to
be a fan in.

Speaker 2 (03:59):
A long time.

Speaker 5 (04:00):
And right, you know, it just got me off of
my feet, and I'm kind of like, well, I need
to relax a little because he's only in middle school
and these are like twelve thirteen year old kids playing. Yeah,
my brother, My brother gets it from me whenever I
see him at home, so I'm tough on him.

Speaker 2 (04:15):
No, but you're right, you know, I talked to former
athletes here all the time and it says once they get
out of a game or something, that those juices they
have to find a way to you know, either go
golfing or yeah something something.

Speaker 4 (04:25):
Yeah, yes, yes for sure. And it kind of was
hard being away from sports.

Speaker 5 (04:31):
A little because that has all of that just caged up,
you know what, I mean, so it's good to release
it and like just find that I'd love to go.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Back to play football again.

Speaker 6 (04:39):
Do you see yourself maybe as a coach, say, you know,
when this is all said and done.

Speaker 4 (04:43):
Oh for sure, for sure, actually working on trying to finish.

Speaker 5 (04:47):
Up the last semester of my degree.

Speaker 4 (04:50):
Because somebody wasn't doing what he was supposed to do
his freshman year in college.

Speaker 5 (04:56):
So the younger me might curse him out every.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
But you know, you live and learn.

Speaker 4 (05:02):
From those opportunities.

Speaker 5 (05:04):
And once I figured that out, finish that up, then
I would like to start coaching. If the opportunity of
me playing outside just doesn't come as soon as I
hope it will, you.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Know, yeah, I'm sure that's after this little weekend and
maybe another week or whatever. You'll probably start searching for
another spot somewhere.

Speaker 4 (05:23):
Oh yes, yes, yes, for sure.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Are you getting your degree from Arizona?

Speaker 5 (05:29):
That's the plan. I don't want to get it from
nowhere else.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
Oh good job.

Speaker 5 (05:33):
I'm still trying to figure out if we'll qualify for
the Wildcap for Life program or anything. So I have
a couple of people trying to work on that for
me that I have a really good relationship here at Arizona.
So if not, then we'll just have to fund it
the online.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
Way were you? I think you were just what a
year or two too early? Now that the nil and
all this money, what do you think? What are your thoughts?

Speaker 4 (05:57):
Man?

Speaker 8 (05:58):
You're telling me some of my friends are getting paid.
I'm like, whoa, it's crazy. Oh sorry, I'll walk away
from the speaker. But yeah, no, for sure, because some
of these guys are getting paid in college is crazy,
right right, Well, your buddy, But.

Speaker 5 (06:16):
I hope that I hope that those guys are getting
taught how to move all their finances and save and
protect themselves, you know what I mean financially, because I
feel like that was something I was learning on the
fly myself, you know what I mean.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
So, m okay, well, good luck this What what when
you came back here, I don't know, a month ago
or whatever it was, did you have people come in
and see you and say hello and do all that
good stuff? And now maybe some more this weekend.

Speaker 5 (06:43):
Yeah, I actually had a couple of the boys.

Speaker 4 (06:45):
Tuba came out, Wino came out.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
I think Lily came out, that.

Speaker 5 (06:54):
Gavin came out. I think there was two more guys
I can't remember off the top of my head, but
everybody was on their Fourth of July break and then
this weekend everybody's actually they got their mock scrimmage at
the same time as our game.

Speaker 4 (07:09):
So I told him, don't worry about this. You guys
got to get ready for you.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
See, did you go to the practice.

Speaker 4 (07:14):
I went to the practice.

Speaker 5 (07:15):
Yesterday, seeing the guys that hung out with them in
the locker room after a little bit to talk to them.
So it was good catching up with them.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
Right, It's good. Okay, Well, appreciate a bunch of Jayden
good luck. We'll see you there tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (07:28):
Thank you so much. I appreciate you again for having me.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
Of course, Jade and do Laura back. Not you of
a stadium, but at DCC not too far from it.
He was. He was fun to watch. I have to
admit it was scary to watch going. You know, he
had he was good at improvising. That's what I thought.
It just would fit him perfectly, right, Yeah, and then
shut you down. But the hell did you gotta call hello?

(07:53):
You're on the air nine of the ball.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
It's a jay I've got one more for you. I've
got coach Mike David from the Vegas night Hawks.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
Okay, yeah, he's right here. Okay, hey, hey, Mike, how
are you. I'm here with Dave Silver. So you guys
went in a nice run. How did this happen? What
kind of magic did you find? You know?

Speaker 4 (08:13):
I think offensively we started clicking. Defensively we started playing
well and our best teams took off. And once that happened,
you know we're If we're playing on on all three phases,
we're tough out.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
Yeah. In fact, we spoke to the coach from Green
Bay earlier this week. He says, one thing I don't
want to happen. I want defense to play a part.
I don't want to shoot out. And I'm thinking, this
is indoor football.

Speaker 4 (08:35):
How can you avoid it? Yeah, I mean I think
I don't think it'll be as high scoring. You know,
somebody's going to catch their catch their stride, and and defensively,
there's somebody's gonna gonna get some stops early and and
then it would be just see who perseveres and and
and take control of the game.

Speaker 6 (08:52):
We just talked to Jaden, of course, you know has
the two son ties seven touchdown passes and in the
in the championship game, what is he this table?

Speaker 4 (09:02):
He's a fear competitor.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
You know, he makes the right throws.

Speaker 4 (09:05):
He's so confident in what in his abilities and what
he's trying to do, and it makes life easier for us.

Speaker 2 (09:11):
Yeah youah, no question, he's not uh, he's not fearful.
He's just he just goes about his business. Did you
have him for the whole year? Did he play the
whole year or did he kind of show up later? No,
we had him a training camp.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
I signed him in January and had him since day one?

Speaker 6 (09:26):
What did you what did you see in him? You
know with his out outdoor game.

Speaker 4 (09:31):
But I mean he can make all the throws. Arm
talent is never an issue. You know, he's a sneakier.
He's a better runner than people give him credit for. Yeah,
so it's perfect for this for this game. And when
he cuts it loose, he I mean, he can shit
the ball in places that other people can't. So the
kid is just and he's not a kid. The young
man has just been a superior talent for us. And

(09:55):
you know he's got big things on the horizons.

Speaker 2 (09:57):
Yeah, yeah, no question. So when you were playing. How
much do you spend time on your team as opposed
to the other team or is it fifty to fifty
or what's the ratio?

Speaker 4 (10:07):
I mean we self glory ourselves, you know, offensively, defensively,
best teams rise and but you know the focus is on,
you know, doing what we can control, them what we
can control, and taking care of our business. And then
obviously you have to prep for for the your opponent.
And Green Bay's gonna be a tough Here'll be a
tough out.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
Yeah, their their quarterback. We have him on it as well.
A ton of touchdowns, ton of plays. Uh, you know,
like I said, they're they're not looking for offense, but
of course they're looking for offense.

Speaker 6 (10:32):
Of course they're seventy four to sixty. Yeah, the championship game,
Earth the semi final.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
What do you think? What are your thoughts on his plate?
The other quarterback?

Speaker 4 (10:42):
I mean Max? I mean, he's the MVP for a reason, right, right,
He's a standout, He's a standout talent. He's one thing
I noticed last year we talked about it is you know,
he he didn't turn them all over. He makes great decisions, right,
so we have to force him into some bad decisions,
to try to force him into some bad decisions and
try to make him one dimensional. If we can do that,
I think we'll have something suces.

Speaker 2 (11:01):
Yeah. Okay, well, coach, appreciate your time problem tomorrow. Yes,
good luck.

Speaker 4 (11:07):
All right.

Speaker 2 (11:07):
I couldn't ask him about the heat because Vegas is yeah,
you know, thanks shake. I don't think we're gonna get
another guy, but we'll talk more maybe on the other
side of this of this break coming up.

Speaker 7 (11:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
That was cool.

Speaker 7 (11:20):
Yeah, no, it is cool.

Speaker 2 (11:21):
So if you have a chance. The tickets aren't very expensive.
I think they're twenty two twenty two bucks, that's which,
that's what they said right this week, and they want
the place to be packed to show to show up
to show. Two son cares well.

Speaker 7 (11:33):
I think it'll be fun too, because they talk about
the tailgate and like, you know, I've never been into
the TCC just you know, not being from here, but
they said it was going to be inside, so it's
like the tailgate was going to be in a sense,
and so it's like, you know.

Speaker 6 (11:48):
Yeah, I mean there could be a little monsoon action
or something. They can kind of mess things up. It's
all outdoors. Yeah, five o'clock on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (11:54):
Does it hit you yet hit me a couple days ago, Uh,
not so much at our house.

Speaker 6 (11:59):
I think I told you the story about our experience
this weekend right on campus.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
That was like just that area, yeah, nowhere else. Yeah,
that was tense. Yeah, it's crazy. I saw that.

Speaker 7 (12:09):
It got been pretty good on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
Yeah, that's where you went around the U of A
four thirty.

Speaker 7 (12:14):
Years so I was taking a nap, but actually put
me to sleep. It was nice.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
I hope they get a good crowd.

Speaker 3 (12:21):
You know.

Speaker 6 (12:21):
It's one of those things who knows about Tucson with
something like this.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
Well they have to because this is a three year deal,
right yeah, And and they'll say, well that's that place
off the list.

Speaker 6 (12:30):
Well, I mean, you know, let's give them a chance
this first year, and you know they don't know what
to expect, and then at least we'll have something, you know,
bounce bounce it off of next year.

Speaker 2 (12:40):
Oh we need to do this better or whatever. Well
we talked about that, because you still haven't seen the
press contry because they were not they were, but coach
Guy was bulling for Phoenix to get down here. Yeah.
Those if that team shows up. This place is packed,
you know, and maybe maybe two sons snuck in somehow,
but Phoenix did not show up, right, It's too bad.

Speaker 7 (12:59):
At the same time too, it might it might help
out the Sugar Skulls for next year too. You know,
people get exposed to it, maybe if they hadn't been.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
Made in terms of attendance and love for the game. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
we'll see, we'll see fun stuff. Okay.

Speaker 6 (13:14):
You know, I wish that they would have done a
little more, you know, Jane Dolaura. I mean, just get
the name out so people can at least relate to
somebody on the teams as opposed to just the Tucson
team or you know now that.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
Well, he did say he said that he was asked
to come here. They looked at him to bring him here,
said yeah, and he said no, and then ended up
over there.

Speaker 7 (13:35):
I wonder how like Vegas found him.

Speaker 2 (13:38):
You know, well, Tucson has Chen is the former coach
of here Tucson. He's their offensive coordinator up there, So
I'm sure that was part of it. Okay, Yeah, And
there's a lot of back and forth inquiries and agents
and but he's right, the money is not great. This
is this is just kind of a sliver of a
hope that somebody sees you to get caught up somewhere else.

(13:59):
I didn't realize is if he was with the U,
the ufl uf l up in Canada? Is it Canada?

Speaker 7 (14:05):
No, No, that's the that's the one that he's in
San Antonio. Was the one that goes, okay in the spring.

Speaker 2 (14:11):
You're right, you're right, And then that he had gotten cut.

Speaker 6 (14:13):
Yeah, I think I maybe i'd seen it in the
news somewhere along the line, and he was still right,
gets a chance to play. But you know, again, I'm
sure many of these guys it wasn't there who we
talked to somebody earlier in the year that played maybe
one of the high schools Dix. Did he continue on,
yeah he's still playing, Oh he was, Yeah, I think so.

Speaker 2 (14:33):
Yeah, and then you just have that dream, right, hopefully
somebody sees you and uh or guess what, This real
world sucks because then you've got to get a real job.

Speaker 7 (14:44):
And he talked about that too, you know, having to
go back to school for another semester.

Speaker 2 (14:49):
J Yes, yeah, yeah, what's cool is good for him? Yeah,
you were here.

Speaker 7 (14:53):
I wonder how much turnover there is every year because
how much time we.

Speaker 2 (14:56):
Got a minute go ahead, I was gonna throw a
question at you guys.

Speaker 7 (15:00):
I wonder how much turnover there is on the rosters,
like because you talk about a ton, yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
A ton. Yeah, I don't I think it's like twenty fourth.
It's not very They don't keep them because they kind
of find talent. They try to persuade another talent to
come down. And two sons one of the nice spots
because they treat them really well. The money's still the same.
It's not very good. JA didn't talked about teaching your
old self or talking to you. What would you do
real quick? What would you tell young Dave go to

(15:27):
medical school? No, that's realistic?

Speaker 6 (15:30):
No, no, no, I don't know. I can't think. I
can't give a good answer on that one just yet.

Speaker 7 (15:35):
Let me think, yeah, but I so you're still young,
But yeah, what would you tell uh maybe four years ago?
Don't get caught up and watch it so much more,
just because I mean, I don't know. It's like it's
kind of like how you say it's uh, like how
you talked about yesterday. It's like, you know, if they
lose all mess up your week if they win, don't

(15:56):
get caught up. Yeah, yeah, you'll that'll last until you
grow up.

Speaker 4 (16:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
Some people don't look at Jay.

Speaker 7 (16:03):
Yeah no, And I mean there's people all the time.
I was actually gonna ask you earlier because he talked
about being in Dallas if you ever ran into like
Skip Bayless.

Speaker 2 (16:11):
No, uh no. In fact, I worked at Dallas Morning News.
He worked the Dallas Times Herald, so he was a
competitor of the sports department. He was still the same
dude over there. Yeah, just cranky. We had a guy
named Randy Galloway and it was kind of like just
kind of the and there was a lot of great
columnists at the Dallas Morning News back then, so it
was it was a huge wars papers, huge paper war. Yeah,

(16:32):
back then Tim Kawashaw, he was at the Dallas Dallas
Morning News. Yeah, and the old dude with the Canada
with the column on Sunday, kind of like Greg. He
had the reputation of quirky, you know, just uh and
it'll come to me. In fact, they hired one at
The Republic from the Dallas Morning News just to note
those three dots three dots items in those things.

Speaker 6 (16:53):
Yeah, I mean because Dan Jenkins came out of Fort Worth.
But I don't know if he ever worked. He must
have worked for one of the local papers before he
got good Time. But that whole group in Dallas with
all the stars right yea and TV too, honestly, yeah,
Principle and Dale Hansen, who had a long career. I
think he might be done, but he was at that station.
WFAA was a major powerhouse right back in the day
when the local stations.

Speaker 2 (17:13):
You know, those were the good old days from the news.
Those are the good olds from me as a little kid,
but way way over my head when I was playing
out there working on there. Okay, let's go.

a Day started off with some local stuff. Recruit of
from the class of twenty twenty seven, Seager Millholme Holand
mill Holand tight End from Portland, Oregon Central Catholic is

(22:27):
supposed to be making a visit on the sixth. I
believe that's.

Speaker 2 (22:31):
When we're playing.

Speaker 7 (22:32):
We were, No, we were.

Speaker 2 (22:34):
Yeah, that's we were second game. Yeah, okay, was you
gonna come watch that game? Yes?

Speaker 7 (22:40):
Gotta make them look good?

Speaker 2 (22:41):
Yeah, I can play you guys.

Speaker 7 (22:46):
Moving on to some kind of basketball alum news. Umar
Ballo and Molly are heading to the afro Basket semi finals.
He's playing on that. It's a part of the FOBA
Even tournaments.

Speaker 2 (23:00):
So uh, Montangaro supposed to supposed to come down here,
yeah for this weekend. He couldn't because he's doing the
play by play or call the commentary for Molly.

Speaker 6 (23:11):
Seriously, yeah this game. These are the afro Basket tournaments. Yes, wow, Yeah, interesting,
isn't Arizona getting a player from it has not got
his visa.

Speaker 2 (23:22):
Yeah, they cleared it good. Yeah, all right, keep it going.

Speaker 7 (23:29):
If you have seen the a on the back of
the scoreboard at the football stadium looking a little rough
and apparently they changed it today ahead of the football season, obviously, sure.

Speaker 2 (23:39):
A picture you have it, they don't have it. You
have it there.

Speaker 7 (23:42):
Yeah, there's a picture of them like kind of putting
it on.

Speaker 2 (23:48):
This is how much I know about it. It's a
big one, right, Yeah, it was it lit? Did it
turn on light?

Speaker 7 (23:53):
It was it looked like there was I don't know
what it was.

Speaker 2 (23:58):
Talking about the old Okay, so this wasn't going to
be lit to I assume, Yeah, I would assume. Yeah,
is it smaller, bigger?

Speaker 7 (24:04):
No, I think it's going to be the same. It
was just the actual decal of it was starting to
get kind of dirty, grimmy, and yeah.

Speaker 6 (24:11):
That's got to be I don't remember when they first
put it up. It's got to be like twenty.

Speaker 2 (24:15):
Five years maybe, Seriously when did they you know? Yeah?

Speaker 7 (24:20):
So that like so that was that the scoreboard, that
the one that they were placed on that side of
the field. Is that the one that ended up in
No Gallas. No, No, I think it.

Speaker 2 (24:30):
Was the other one. It was the other end zone,
the other Oh okay, I think okay.

Speaker 6 (24:35):
If you watch Revenge of the Nerds if you didn't
want to go back, I think I've watched it, yeah,
because it was shot on campus and that A is
in there because they're called It's Adams College and then
the Adams Adams Yeah, and that's the a. I think
they wound up in No Gallas. Yeah, pretty sure.

Speaker 2 (24:51):
And that was in the north end zone. It was
last time you watched that movie? Yeah, it's been a
long time. It had to be for me too. Forty
years yeah, forty five five Yeah.

Speaker 7 (24:59):
Probably a couple years ago when I found out that.

Speaker 2 (25:01):
And you did, what'd you think it was funny?

Speaker 3 (25:04):
Did?

Speaker 2 (25:04):
Did you recognize some of the spots? Yeah?

Speaker 7 (25:06):
Yeah, especially like right in front of Old Maine, like
coming coming from university, you can see that's about real well,
and then obviously the mall when they had like the
games and stuff like that. Was that was a good one.

Speaker 6 (25:18):
Isn't there a scene like it begins they're coming down
the freeway, right, I think you see the speedway exit.
I want to say they're in the car going to
campus and then they wind up there.

Speaker 7 (25:29):
Women's soccer continue getting on a little run now one
two to zero against New Mexico. State Volleyball is going
to have an exehibition game against Northern Colorado tomorrow at noon.
This was a more of a.

Speaker 2 (25:45):
Local high school one.

Speaker 7 (25:47):
Marana is going to be doing their Blue and Gold
scrimmage tonight, kicks off at six in case anybody wants
to go. Obviously, they were the one seed in the
Open division last.

Speaker 2 (25:59):
Year and then playing next week against and they're.

Speaker 6 (26:01):
Playing next week against South Their star from last year
wound up going to Jed Fish Washington.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
Their receiver Roebuck mh.

Speaker 7 (26:11):
Diamondbacks also played a night at six p forty. They're
playing the reds or.

Speaker 2 (26:16):
How bad are they?

Speaker 7 (26:18):
Not as bad as the Giants. Sixty sixty six started
off great, Sorry, funny enough. After they got Rapiel Devers
is when it kind of started a nose.

Speaker 2 (26:29):
That typically happened. I mean when you get somebody and
it disrupts the chemistry of the team. Yeah, not that,
not that that happened, but there's a possibility once you
have that third kid.

Speaker 6 (26:40):
Then it's why I stopped at two.

Speaker 2 (26:44):
Uh So there you have the tacks playing. Who's pitching?
You got the hat chef for Arizona?

Speaker 7 (26:49):
I just I just clicked out of it. Sorry about
that pitching. It is Zach Litel from the Reds against
Ryan Nelson.

Speaker 2 (27:00):
Cool, we're gonna get by the way, we're gonna get
Jay at four point thirty. Tokn A wrap up? What's
going on down there?

Speaker 7 (27:07):
Okay?

Speaker 2 (27:07):
Sweet?

Speaker 7 (27:08):
Well, speaking about Jay. The Dodgers are playing the Padres.

Speaker 2 (27:12):
Jimmy, Yeah, big series.

Speaker 7 (27:14):
Yeah, it was a big series. They played last week.
Obviously Dodgers took two. I don't think they swept them.

Speaker 2 (27:20):
Did they sweep?

Speaker 7 (27:21):
Actually I think they did sweep the Padres last weekend.
This time they're playing in San Diego and the Dodgers
are still favored. It's gonna be Blake Snell versus you Darvish,
So that's gonna be a good one. We talked about
this little off air Secretariat's Triple Crown jockey Ron Turcott
died at eighty four today.

Speaker 6 (27:43):
Well, the release came out today. So still one of
the greatest performances I've ever seen in sports. Killed everybody
winning the Belmont, and if you ever get a chance,
I mean I this is nerdy by me and because
I wound up going into the sportscasting with business.

Speaker 2 (28:00):
But it's one of the great calls of all time.
Just listening to that. The guy who's you know.

Speaker 6 (28:04):
Calling the race, you know, secretary is running like a
tremendous machine. Seventy three tremendous machine. I mean he blows
the field away with like thirty something. It was unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (28:16):
Right, good while show you some days tomorrow and Sunday.
I think so former the UA group, you know, White,
Minu and Watson, where are they running. They're running in Delmar, Okay.

Speaker 7 (28:28):
With actually college football starting. Something that isn't really getting
talked about too much is the farewell of Lee Corso
that is going to be happening. Yeah, obviously been the
It's just the one game, right, Yeah, he's only coming
back for one game.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
Right, What did you think about him, Dave? Because you're
in the business. Uh, I don't know. I'll say it
lasting too long, you.

Speaker 6 (28:51):
Know, yeah when he's yeah, I mean he probably could
have hung it up. You know ten years ago. He
really wasn't contributing as much as he used to in
the last couple of years, So you know it's time
for him to go away and finish. I mean, he
was it was that show was you know, up until
inside the NBA, you know, the best pregame show in sports,

(29:12):
and it's you know, Fox has got a show. It's
doing pretty well, but it's still the ESPN Game Dad.
So I think there's a special about him tonight. Yeah,
it's coming out to ESPN nine.

Speaker 2 (29:24):
Six o'clock here, so probably. Yeah.

Speaker 6 (29:27):
I mean he's I don't know, he's he's kind of legend.
He didn't he go to college with like Burt Reynolds
or something, all this kind of trivia.

Speaker 2 (29:35):
He coached at Indiana Indiana, but he went to Florida State.
He's kind of like the Dick Partello football. Yeah. I
mean he's probably about the same age.

Speaker 7 (29:43):
Did he coach at Navy with Bill Belichick's dad.

Speaker 2 (29:48):
I don't know where'd you pull that one from. Maybe
I know he coached at that dad, Navy?

Speaker 7 (29:54):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (29:56):
Was he chasing young women?

Speaker 3 (29:58):
No?

Speaker 2 (29:59):
I don't know.

Speaker 6 (30:00):
That's gonna be a great story that's there. They don't
play North Carolina doesn't played till next week. I'm assuming
they're not playing tomorrow.

Speaker 7 (30:07):
They're playing. That's what he's making and they're playing TCU,
so it's gonna be a good one. Yeah. Obviously, the
big game tomorrow at nine is gonna be Kansas State
and Iowa State far Mageddon.

Speaker 2 (30:21):
That'll be the last time you ever put those two
teams in a big game. Well, they're ranked.

Speaker 6 (30:26):
They might make it the Big Twelve championship of the
best teams in the conference.

Speaker 2 (30:29):
Iowa State and Kansas State. Yeah, that's the last time
you put those two teams in the big game.

Speaker 6 (30:35):
Yeah, I'm a good exposure for the conference. Great, I mean,
who I mean if it was a normal Saturday, yeah,
even KNOWPN plus or something, but you know, this is
a chance and it's first game, it's it's in Dublin, yep.

Speaker 2 (30:49):
So yeah, fun stuff, good for the Big Twelve.

Speaker 7 (30:52):
Obviously, next week Arizona starts their season on t n T,
which is kind of interesting to me. I was, I
don't know, not a not a traditional one, but happening
tomorrow as well is going to be Kansas and Fresno
State at three point thirty, So I don't know, maybe
you get a chance to look at Kansas football if
you want to.

Speaker 2 (31:12):
If you want to, Yeah, they're kind of one of
those Arizona type shit. Either it's going to be good
or we don't know yet.

Speaker 6 (31:17):
Yeah, I mean on the phone, there's gonna be like,
you know, I don't know, eight teams in the big
twelve that have a chance and the bottom eights are
going to try to fight to get out of there.

Speaker 14 (31:27):
Were you here?

Speaker 2 (31:28):
I was, Oh, I was starting to uh the guy
from Washington Post if they if they can crack that eight? Yeah, okay,
hey are you on the air? Nine? The batles is jayd.

Speaker 4 (31:43):
Good.

Speaker 3 (31:43):
It was good, well attended. You know, a lot a
lot of media here. Uh, some fans came. A good event,
good kickoff to this, to this whole thing.

Speaker 2 (31:55):
What do you think of attendance wise, festivities wise, all
that you know?

Speaker 3 (32:00):
I I don't know. I mean, I'm hoping that you
know how teersun is right. We're a walk up town.
I think, you know, I think they sold a few
thousand tickets. But you know it's gonna be like, you know,
they see this on TV or something on the radio,
all the TV stations we're here. Hopefully tomorrow we get uh,
you know, we get some people who see this. Yeah,

(32:23):
that sounds like something fun, you know, both Justin Spears
and Michael Leve were in the house. So, uh, you know,
it was a well attended event. I'm pretty happy with it.

Speaker 2 (32:34):
I don't know who those guys are.

Speaker 4 (32:40):
So good for you doesn't sit right here, and he.

Speaker 3 (32:43):
Knows you just said something bad about it.

Speaker 2 (32:46):
That's okay, that's okay. Hey, Hey, so that's good. Good good.
H So you've been busy, obviously you're not in the
show today. What impressed you? You know, team was you?
You're one of those airport team guys.

Speaker 3 (32:59):
Yeah, you know you can tell why these teams are here,
right Uh, you know, they both of them have a
good quarterback of the Green Bay quarterback is the MVP
of the league. We all know what Jade and Delara
can do. I saw him play here against against the
Sugar Skulls and he chewed him up. They scored a
bunch of both teams scored over seventy in their last games.

(33:23):
You know, you can tell why they're here. They've got,
you know, athletes, and they look like athletes, and.

Speaker 4 (33:30):
It's it should be a lot of fun.

Speaker 3 (33:32):
I think it's been an exciting game. Take the over
is what I hear is what is what I hear
take the over?

Speaker 2 (33:37):
What is the over? It's kind of a.

Speaker 3 (33:41):
It's like ninety three and a half.

Speaker 2 (33:43):
The Actually there's actually a line.

Speaker 3 (33:48):
You can bet it on DraftKings all the way.

Speaker 2 (33:51):
Let's go, what's this world coming to? What about the other?

Speaker 6 (33:56):
I guess there's a tailgate and it is going to
be indoors. That's the way it's gonna be.

Speaker 3 (34:00):
Yeah, there's there's an indoor tailgate. Tomorrow starts at four
point fifteen. It's then. If you've ever been to like
the Gym and Minerals show, the giant exhibition hall that's
adjacent to the arena, that's where it's at. So if
you come to, if you come down, it's free. Now
that you know, there's concessions and stuff. The food's not free,

(34:21):
but there's concessions. There's a beer garden. There's gonna be
inflatable activities for the kids. The Sugar Skulls Earth is down,
you know, on the on the floor in there, so
the kids can run around and play on it. But
there's tables set up. There's gonna be DJs from it's
gonna be live remote from three different radio stations as

(34:42):
well as the DJ all kinds of stuff, and it's
it's a two hour tailgate.

Speaker 2 (34:47):
Three.

Speaker 3 (34:48):
Just when you come in, come in through the doors
to the exhibition Hall that are near the Double Tree,
that side of the that side of the building, and
just come in, go downstairs, and we're having a party.

Speaker 2 (35:01):
Tickets are twenty two.

Speaker 3 (35:04):
Tickets are the twenty two dollars and up. You can
get him on Ticketmaster or even better yet stuff you
want to avoid the Ticketmaster fees, just come and get
a ticket at the print at the ticket office. The
TCC ticket office will be open, okay, and you know,
get your tickets there.

Speaker 2 (35:24):
Okay. So I guess we'll see you in a coat
and tie all official carecut there you will, no dogs,
you will.

Speaker 3 (35:31):
I mean I don't. I don't have the tie on today,
but I do have the coat and the slacks and
like real shoes.

Speaker 2 (35:38):
Oh worlds. And we don't have to do.

Speaker 3 (35:40):
That in here now, no, no, no, no no. And
you know here Dixie Wooton was here. Dixie they one
year sugar Skulls coach and he was here, slimmed down
a ton, looks good. He asked the first questions that
the at the the Q and it was pretty funny.

Speaker 2 (36:00):
Was you with?

Speaker 3 (36:01):
But he's with the Fisher Fighters, I think is the
name of the team. It's the team out of Indiana,
Fisher Indiana. So he's coaching the team up there, he says,
having a great time.

Speaker 2 (36:12):
Okay, okay, all right, okay.

Speaker 3 (36:15):
Thought I saw a few other guys. Matt Barrett, who
was the QB of the Sugar Skulls the first year.
He's the OC for Green Bay. He's here Herd his
chin as the offensive coordinator for Vegas.

Speaker 2 (36:29):
Right, So was there a Kevin guy siding?

Speaker 3 (36:33):
There was a Kevin guy sighting. Kevin and Cathy were
both here. Todd Tryon, the commissioner, was here. Brent Stover,
who's doing the play by play for CBS. He MC
the event and he's pretty fired up. And so you know, look,
we've put together a great event. Now we just got
to get people to come out and see this. It

(36:54):
looks great. The field is down, it's it's not the
Sugar spuls field. It's a green turf with the Giant
ISFL National Championship logo. You got the Blizzard logo in
one end zone, you got the Nighthawks logo in the
other end zone. Feels like a super Bowl, man, feels
like a Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (37:11):
Okay, cool, merch and everything. Right, you got merch, merch
and everything.

Speaker 3 (37:15):
Man, it's all here.

Speaker 2 (37:17):
I was there.

Speaker 3 (37:17):
Oh, guys. Mascots and both team mascots, the sugar Smugs mascot,
the sugar dolls, the cheer team will be here, all
kinds of stuff, all kinds of cool things.

Speaker 4 (37:31):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (37:32):
Tail date starts at four fifteen.

Speaker 2 (37:35):
Okay, we'll see you tomorrow fifteen to six fifteen. We'll
be there, all.

Speaker 3 (37:38):
Right, Steve, Thanks much, man appreciation.

Speaker 2 (41:50):
Helly, welcome back to I Was about Herold Fox Sports
fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rovera. You're Dave Silver. How are
you finishing the week with me?

Speaker 3 (41:57):
Man?

Speaker 2 (41:59):
God Day here? That busy week? Yeah, busy week.

Speaker 6 (42:01):
Next week gets busier with your little previews of the Say,
what's that going to be like?

Speaker 2 (42:06):
Media wise? That they do like a Monday or Tuesday.
I think it's a Monday. I think it's a Monday.
Some of the players, all the guys. Yeah, you might
be in Monday Wednesday. We'll figure your time out. Ray
is leaving me till Fridays. Yeah, I want I'll be here.
He has nothing else to do. Then I'll probably get
a couple more interns. Then you just take over the

(42:28):
show and I can go retired like Dave and still
be busy. Are you gonna go get some interns from
the U of A? Yeah, I'm looking for two more
for all my jobs. Yeah. Yeah, So that starts here
this next week. So traffic is going to be crazy.
It's already kind of crazy. I went, I haven't been
down there this week? Is it? Have you been down
in speedway?

Speaker 7 (42:47):
I've seen some students walking by. I mean school starts Monday.

Speaker 2 (42:50):
Yeah, I mean rush. You always see stuff happening with such.
So I was coming down from the northwest side, like you, Dave,
and I was well, Wednesday morning, I never get to
work by ten, you know, ten can that's just my
normal time. I had to leave at seven thirty five
thirty lights. I hit twenty eight of them. I say,

(43:11):
why do people? Why don't you? And people try to
drive at seven in the morning, And I'm not a
patient man. Yeah, it's tough to sound.

Speaker 6 (43:21):
Traffic's never been good, and it's you know, maybe it's
going to get better, but you know, if you're going
down that freeway, god forbid, there's an accident in the morning.

Speaker 2 (43:28):
Well that's it. It's a disaster. I didn't take the
freeway for that specific reason. And okay, the streets and
then the lights don't don't dune, yeah yeah, maybe, and
then the construction on every street.

Speaker 6 (43:40):
Exactly, don't forget that they would divert the traffic right
down by my street whenever there's an accident.

Speaker 2 (43:45):
Oh, I couldn't even get out of my own neighborhood
be an accident. That's because I've seen that. I've seen that. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
well you know now we're going up now complaining that.

Speaker 6 (43:55):
And another thing, it's too hot.

Speaker 2 (44:00):
It hasn't been as hot. It's been nice. I mean
it's been nice.

Speaker 7 (44:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (44:03):
One hundred and two is better than one hundred and twelve.

Speaker 7 (44:05):
Yeah, that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (44:06):
It's been raining a little So he's going to get
okay here in a little bit. Yeah.

Speaker 7 (44:10):
I think on Wednesday, I was working, you know, I
work in the restaurant obviously, and I'll go back to
the kitchen, NFL humid. Like I walked in, Like I
walked into the kitchen, my glasses fogged up, and I
was like, man, it's.

Speaker 2 (44:22):
That time of year, a little bit of rain, right,
and you know.

Speaker 6 (44:25):
With football at seven thirty start next week, maybe it'll
be a little bit cooler.

Speaker 2 (44:28):
Yes, the game gets going. Who was your side kick
back in the day? Which one? There are many?

Speaker 12 (44:34):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (44:34):
Okay, your last one, my last one? Jake nap God,
he went to Phoenix. He went to Phoenix. Jake Naps
So did you Phil Bueller? Phil Bueller, Yeah, we've had
him on. Let me ask you, so this time of year,
it was you were lucky to have a second guy. Yes,
oh you did you have have a third guy? Yeah? Sometimes,
so that's when you really enjoy having you got to

(44:58):
do a lot of things. Yeah, high schools. Yeah, I
mean this is where I mean, really you turn.

Speaker 6 (45:02):
The page this this weekend when things when things are
you know, multiple things are going on. I don't know
how they do it now. I really don't know what
the makeup of the staffs are. But you know, we
would go out with high school football on a full
Friday night.

Speaker 2 (45:15):
We get cameras. How many cameras maybe four or so,
how many did you have?

Speaker 6 (45:20):
We would try to shoot well, like you've got ten
people would come in.

Speaker 2 (45:23):
We didn't.

Speaker 6 (45:23):
Yeah, we probably have people come in and help if
you know, do what you know on overtime and things
like that. So we would probably bring back about eight games.
You know, all of a sudden, those games are coming back.
It's like nine twenty five, and you got you know,
editing and writing and trying to figure out the scores
and it was a challenge and thanks what there were
some guys at the Citizen. You guys helped me out.

(45:45):
We would we'd call scores back and forth.

Speaker 7 (45:47):
Yeah, I had a question. So this is for both
of you, guys. I guess do you think, like in
the world of journalism that you know, if you if
you get hired to cover a really like a good
team or like, you know, a team has a really
good year, like, how much does their success like kind
of help you out?

Speaker 2 (46:03):
One hundred percent? One hundred percent. I even wrote this column.
Had I not covered the U of A and Loot
and all that, I would have never been able to
write my books that I've written. No one would have
given a crap to who I am because when I
went to National with the team and blah blah blah,
they knew who I was because I was always there
right now. But if they were if they were bad

(46:25):
or they sucked, no one, no one would care. I'm
sure I enjoyed just.

Speaker 6 (46:28):
The experiences of covering a good team and when all
of a sudden you're sitting there next to other people
who were legends in the business and you're staying right there.
You know, I've covered some Phoenix Suns NBA, like when
they were in the NBA finals. Like I'm standing there
like next to Bob Costas. Okay, I'm standing next to Bob.
I mean things like that. It's kind of kind of
makes you want to work harder and be better. And
you know, maybe he's watching me. Maybe you know there's

(46:49):
a way you can watch what I'm doing.

Speaker 2 (46:52):
Yeah, Oh, you're on the air and on the ball.
Who's this.

Speaker 19 (46:57):
You guys? This is gay from Keli?

Speaker 2 (46:59):
How you guys, Gabe, you're in a good mood today
because next week it's gonna start.

Speaker 19 (47:05):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (47:06):
Is Jay here? No, No, he's he's doing some sugar
skull stuff or some indoor football.

Speaker 19 (47:11):
That bomb.

Speaker 2 (47:13):
That's that's what I think of him too.

Speaker 4 (47:16):
What Yeah, I'm I'm met them.

Speaker 2 (47:19):
So what were you gonna say?

Speaker 19 (47:22):
Yeah, one week before Saturday, before I ever's going the
football kicks off. How's everything going to son? What do
you What do you think of Brent Brennan? And what
do you think of of the team?

Speaker 2 (47:37):
It's gonna be different. I think he's gonna be much
appreciated this year. Uh. That said, I think we've already
gone around the room with everybody. Dave, you got him
at what I'm around six and six, six and six.
I'm at six and six, six and second, what do
you think, Gabe seven? Is that the you're not You're

(47:58):
not an optimist, more of a real list Okay, yeah,
more of a realist. So you got him at seven
to five.

Speaker 19 (48:07):
He needs, he needs to go to a Bowl game.
And I don't know if Jay's ary Refrancois is gonna
fire him this year.

Speaker 2 (48:16):
If I don't know, yeah, I think I think we
all have that if he doesn't win, win, you know,
have a if he goes, you know, five and seven
or whatever. I think that's gonna be very tough. Six
and six. I think it's, you know, manageable. Seven.

Speaker 6 (48:30):
I don't know how much the UFA is interested in
getting into a buyout situation, and another coach who knows.
I mean, his leash might be pretty long, especially considering
how the sport's changing year to year. I mean, I
don't think anybody knows what to expect until in the field.

Speaker 7 (48:45):
Tend to add on to that, I think another point
to make is like how those looks or how those
losses look. You know, if he does end up losing
a lot of games, it depends how he loses them.

Speaker 2 (48:54):
Style points right.

Speaker 19 (48:56):
I agree, you better not be blowout. Got to try
to win, try to be competitive.

Speaker 2 (49:02):
Right, right, you'll have your eyes on this. We should,
we should. It should be a fun season and then
you'll have basketball to figure out.

Speaker 19 (49:10):
Yeah, a lot of newcomers in regards to men's basketball.

Speaker 2 (49:14):
A lot of newcomers, very good newcomers though, So we'll
see what Tommy does with it.

Speaker 19 (49:20):
And they're playing, they're playing against the Southern No, that
South poor, that South Pole elf called Nick nick cronin right.

Speaker 2 (49:33):
Yes, that'll be in New c l a A. Yes, yeah,
and Florida, Florida to open the game, open the season
here in early November.

Speaker 1 (49:43):
Nick, they're not.

Speaker 19 (49:46):
Nick Nick Cron and they'll not be chewings. My buddy
Justin Spira is out or also to pour him back
to the north fall.

Speaker 2 (49:54):
We'll let him know that. Thank you man, Thank you
again for calling in.

Speaker 19 (49:58):
Thank you, Arizona go.

Speaker 2 (50:00):
We hadn't heard from game in a while. We didn't
have he's in California. He's in California, calls in. Yeah,
the old app YEP listen something up. You didn't have
to push the button. I didn't, I was ready. We
did today though, Yes, we did be sure. If you
didn't listen today and you're on now, you missed the
first hour. We have been at Davison. A lot of
fun stuff, pretty cool that'll be on the apps. All

(50:21):
these things are on the podcast.

Speaker 6 (50:23):
That was going to want to ask him out, was it?
What does he have from the ninety seven championship? What
do you think he?

Speaker 2 (50:30):
I'll ask him did they have anything cool?

Speaker 6 (50:32):
I man, I got the program, I've got some of
the median notes, I've got some sports illustrated when you
know hit there with Miles Simon.

Speaker 2 (50:39):
I wonder what the players, Yeah, they keep they snatched
out of the lot. Well, he mentioned this story last
night when they went to Australia. Remember they won the title.
They came back and blah blah blah. Right after school finished,
they all went to Australia for three weeks for that. Yeah,
it was very busy. So they went and and Michael
Dickerson came back. He said, you know, a relative was

(51:00):
so you had to come back. So those guys were
jealous because they were already tired of playing basketball all
this time. So they stayed another two and a half weeks,
about ten days in you know, a week or so,
and they wanted to come home, and they wanted to
try to pull a if Dickerson can leave, you know,
we want to come back to So they asked Ross
to have a meeting with with Loot and they had

(51:20):
a meeting with Luton and they were they were prepared. Man,
we're gonna go in and we're gonna stand for them,
blah blah blah blah. And this says coach, we'd like
to like to go back home. We're tired and blah
blah blah. And he says it's not happening. And that
was that wow, because you don't look, it's not happened.
And they backed up. But this okay, okay. But what

(51:41):
I do remember is that Miles used that says, if
we can stay and we're gonna have to stay, can
we get what we want in our ring? So they
device designed the ring really so there was a little
tipper to tat there. So this is before. This is
right after they want they want ninety seven.

Speaker 6 (51:57):
So they were like went off to summer vacation after Yeah. Right,
they came back and they went to d C in October.

Speaker 2 (52:03):
We were leaving. Thank you Ray, thank you Dave. We
got to go with actually giving me the high sign.
You got to get out of here. Thanks everybody, good week.
I appreciate it. We'll see you guys Monday.
