Speaker 1 (00:01):
Breaking down all the xys and ohs. This is I
on the Ball with Steve Rivera on Fox Sports fourteen
fifty eight.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Welcome back to I of the Ball once again on Serona.
Here filling in for Steve Rivera, and we're just gonna
go ahead and segue into some breaking news.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
This is I on the Ball, Breaking news on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty eight.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Big news of the day, probably big news around the world,
the engagement of superstar Taylor Swift and football star Travis Kelcey.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Yeah, I mean it's American pop royalty, right, is huge
news obviously for the NFL, for pop culture in general.
And so yeah, it popped up on my phone about
five or six different ways.

Speaker 4 (00:49):
Breaking news.

Speaker 3 (00:49):
You know, might be the most breaking news pop up
they've ever got, and it's about two pop culture you
know figures.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
I know Steve was very invested into this, this engagement.

Speaker 5 (00:59):
Well, there's here's the funny thing. About two years or
eighteen months ago, when this started to happen, I'm thinking,
there's no way this is going to last. An athlete
with this, with a high profile person, it'll last four
months and it it'll flame out. Boy was I wrong?
In fact, I kind of made a bet with the
swifty I guess that's what they call it. Yeah, and
I said, there's just no way knowing what I know

(01:19):
about you athletes, and it did. And it's the other engaged.
That doesn't mean it's gonna last, but it's lasted longer
than I thought.

Speaker 4 (01:27):
Yeah, And I mean she she bought in.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
She she was obviously a fixture at NFL games and
on our TV screens. He was going to concerts, and
so they got engaged in both each other's lives at
a pretty good level.

Speaker 5 (01:36):
I don't know if you remember the spreadsheet, Ricky might
know to me and this is and this has happened
a lot, right, but Jodan Magio and and Marilyn Monroe,
and that was I don't know how long that lasted,
but it didn't last long, but kind of like that, yeah,
back in the day.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
That one of the big one of the biggest female
entertainers in a world with one of the biggest athletes
in the world.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
So yeah, this is definitely a power couple. And in
big news.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
There's a lot of speculation after the announcement that it
was gonna happen after that Super Bowl, but then of course,
the Eagles took care of business.

Speaker 5 (02:05):
That night, ruin their party on Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
Like we've talked about and we'll keep talking about it
all week. Arizona football is back. On Saturday, they played
the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors seven thirty on t n T.
One of the big question marks around the game was
the Hawaii quarterback and Micah and Alejandro Alejandro Alejando. I'm
not sure how to pronounce that last name. Uh, he
went out, he went out for a play. And their Saturday,

(02:28):
last Saturday's win against Stanford with the high inkled spring,
but head head coach for Hawaii, Timmy Chang, said that
he's expecting him to play.

Speaker 5 (02:36):
You know, one thing about the tn T broadcast.

Speaker 6 (02:39):
TNT will take the TNT Game of the Week and
they will do half an hour segment, you know, like
to do the six Days this Sunday, So they're actually
on campus everywhere with cameras and video so you'll get
a real insight.

Speaker 5 (02:55):
So what's going on with And that's kind of like,
well not kind of like it's kind of free publicity
to the university.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
One.

Speaker 5 (03:01):
Yeah and the team, yeah.

Speaker 6 (03:03):
Yeah, yeah, they were there last night at Coach Brennan's
radio show.

Speaker 5 (03:06):
They're everywhere, They're all over the campus.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
Continuing with some Arizona athletics, the soccer team plays newly
number one Stanford on Thursday at three o'clock in Palo Alto.
So a big matchup for the soccer team coming up.

Speaker 3 (03:19):
Yeah, soccer's off to a great start at three and L.
The head coach back is done a fantastic job with
that crew. You know, she's just she's she's a firecracker,
that one. And it's just an excellent job there. And
for going to be three and L and another great opportunity,
got a number one team coming in. They really make
your mark. So if you get an opportunity to go
out there check the games, you'll love them. They're physical,
they're fast, and you can get right and close, so

(03:41):
so please support the ladies.

Speaker 2 (03:42):
Another program getting ready to start is the Arizona volleyball team.
They play Alabama State on Friday in the start of
the Wildcat Classic. They'll also take on Texas A and
M Corpus Christy and then Fresno State Saturday and Sunday.

Speaker 6 (03:53):
Yeah, Rita's team, they've gotten off to a great start too.
You know, are they undefeated, they're still unfeated. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
volleyball on fire and coach steps has those girls fired up?

Speaker 3 (04:04):
Yeah, Rita's incredible. If you know her, if you've seen
her work, you know what's kind of job she's done.
She's she's recruited at a high level. They have some
great girls. You can come see the new McHale floor,
see it up close and personal. And so yeah, I
encourage everybody once again. You know, tickets are chief seating
tickets or even cheat you know, are not not very
expensive and you get your name on your seat nowadays,
So doing some pretty cool things there.

Speaker 4 (04:22):
So please the police support reading.

Speaker 5 (04:23):
An I National champions.

Speaker 6 (04:25):
Yeah, you've seen a good volleyballthing differently, but yeah, I
get it.

Speaker 5 (04:29):
Yeah the B, Yeah, the B and I A yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
To some local sports, The Diamondbacks played the Brewers last night.
They lost, uh just seven to five, made a little
bit of a close run at the end. They'll play
again today at four forty looking to tie up that series.

Speaker 7 (04:44):
Uh.

Speaker 5 (04:44):
And then so to the NFL.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
All thirty two teams have to make their final cuts
to their fifty three men roster. Some Arizona Wildcats did
get waived such as Gary bright Well, Tanner McLaughlin, and
even Quali Conley on the Bengals. Big Bill Norton got
released to wave by the Los Angeles Rams.

Speaker 6 (05:02):
Yeah, and on an NFL. No, there'll be three NFL
players that will be here for our game. Jonah, Yeah,
t Mac and Uh, it's one of the players that's
going to be here for Randy rob Randy Robbins. Oh,
Randy's going in the Ring of Fame. But uh tell
loop Yeah, are you so?

Speaker 5 (05:21):
You're saying MC? Who's cut to me? That's a surprise.
Waved you saw you? You were there when.

Speaker 6 (05:28):
They're probably picking back up on. Yeah, that's what he
still can go back on the practice squad and you
won it. He was fantastic as a player. Yeah, we'll developing.

Speaker 2 (05:37):
The NFL season starts Thursday, September fourth with the Cowboys
Steves Cowboys. No, that's these Cowboys anymore.

Speaker 5 (05:45):
Gift those Cowboys, I'm regifted them. No.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
They'll take on the defending Super Bowl champs, the Philadelphia
Eagles in Philadelphia five twenty NBC. UH Spencer Ratler was
named the Saints starting quarterback for their season opener, UH,
taking over head of Tyler show who was drafted pretty
early on in this last draft. And then of course
sud Or Sander didn't make the Browns roster, but he
will be QB three behind Dylan Gabriel and starting a

(06:09):
quarterback at Joe Flecco.

Speaker 5 (06:11):
So so, Rickie, give me this and I'll guess us,
Reggie a swell. When you were going through this process
of trying to make the team, were you ever nervous
or concerned or at what point were you as you
got into the eight year, nine year whatever you're in
the later years.

Speaker 6 (06:28):
You know, I remember coming off of an injury where
I had a doctor he uh had a scope on
my knee, and I know I wasn't ready to go back.

Speaker 5 (06:36):
How many years? In how many years?

Speaker 6 (06:37):
Oh?

Speaker 5 (06:38):
Six? Okay?

Speaker 6 (06:39):
And and uh I just couldn't I'm running it, but
I couldn't stop. I had no breaks, you know, And
it was just a nervous time being out there on
the field. And well, you made the team. I made
the team, Yeah, but I end up getting caught season.
Oh okay, So if you're a six year yeah, and
then I got picked up again. Okay, okay, how about you, Reggie?

Speaker 3 (06:58):
Yeah, for me, it was day one you know, I
was the second round draft choice, and and and back then,
second rounder still had to make the team.

Speaker 5 (07:04):
You know.

Speaker 3 (07:04):
Nowadays they give them four year contracts and they kind
of can figure out over time, but you had to
hit the ground running. And I came into camp with
the Cleveland Cavaliers and I'm looking around and Adrian Autry
and and some faces I recognize. I'm like, man, I
got to make this team. So, uh, it was day
one for me. You know, with Cleveland, I go into
San Antonio next year. There's a ready two spots at
about ten of us. And so every day I woke
up and said good morning, and and thank god I'm here, and.

Speaker 4 (07:25):
And kept being I went to Detroit the same thing.

Speaker 3 (07:27):
So for me, that was that was pretty much my
professional career, always being on edge.

Speaker 5 (07:31):
How long were you at sanatour and just for that
one year, just for the one year I do remember.
The reason I asked, is I remember going to Phoenix
to to do a story on you, right because it
was your second year and and and he says, sorry
to you, I don't talk before the game. You remember,
do you remember? You know, when we get time with
you guys before I'm sure before this, you were too fresh.
You kind of didn't want to step on anybody's toes.

(07:52):
This is how I remember it, and you were kind
of like starry site. I just don't want to do it.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
I just yeah, you know, like I said, I think, uh,
just being being more confident.

Speaker 4 (08:01):
I could have been a little more confide during those
times there.

Speaker 3 (08:03):
But that my second year in MBA, I played almost
a thousand minutes, started a few games, I was having.

Speaker 4 (08:07):
My career was really starting to kind of trend in
the right direction.

Speaker 3 (08:09):
And unfortunately the lockout was the following year, and then
I had a help issue and it was kind of
a perfect storm. But yeah, you know, it's such a
competitive environment. There's it's such you know, such a big
dollar amount, and you're looking at generational wealth and it's
just so many things going on in young man's head
that you know, sometimes you're just trying to slow things
down and quiet them.

Speaker 5 (08:26):
No question, So let me ask both of you this
question then. Uh, for you, Reggie, how how difficult will
Caleb Love have it? He undrafted? Uh, he played fairly
well in the summer League. But you know, what does
that mean? Because you have to be unbelievably good to
find a roster.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Spot you do. You need be good and lucky. You
know your timing has to be well. We talk about
roster configuration and what the team needs and doesn't need.
And sometimes they don't need scores. Sometimes they need a
veteran guy off the bench, and I would have a
guy like Caleb. But I think Calb's in a really
good position. I'm super excited for him. I'm a caleber
Love fan. I love the job he did for us
as on the court and off court, as the citizen
here in Tucson, and being a two way player. Now

(09:06):
keep in mind this is some of the difference. See
he's a two way player for Portland. That means he's
gonna get a healthy contract this year. He'll probably play
forty G League games and he'll probably get forty NBA games.
Guess what, Calb Love can do one thing and do
anything well and had to score the basketball and shoot
the basketball, and that is that's a high premium in
today's game. And so he's gonna have some big games
in the G League. He's gonna have some very big

(09:26):
games in the NBA showcase himself. And so I think
it's the best of both worlds. This is the Portland
team is not gonna be very good, so he's gonna
get his chances.

Speaker 5 (09:33):
And Ricky, how difficult is it for rookies? We just
talked about Tyler real, real quick to make a roster.

Speaker 7 (09:39):
No.

Speaker 6 (09:40):
Usually in most cases, that guy in front of you,
he's been there six seven years and he's making ten
to fifteen million. Not like this in il stuff. This
is no money. They make real money. Yes, yes, but
you know that guy is not gonna just give up
his job. He's not just gonna lay down. He's gonna
be lazy. He's gonna be prepared, he's gonna be in shape,
he's gonna be ready. He's gonna fight to keep making
that good money. Sure, it's not automatic nothing. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
The NCAAA and VENMO have a partner to combat harassment
of college athletes, including unwanted requests for money from losing
betters and solicitation for inside information.

Speaker 5 (10:14):
The partnership doesn't will.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
Include the ability to report abuse and harassment, education on
account security, and increased monitoring, especially around events like miss
game winning field goals or last second shots.

Speaker 5 (10:27):
Stuff like that.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
We've been talking about it throughout the show of how
to handle your money, how to handle outsiders with this
new era of college sports.

Speaker 3 (10:37):
Yeah, this is just another thing we're talking about that
social media and now you have the ability to bet
on sports and kind of how that's exploded, and so,
you know, protecting the mental health of our student athletes
is a big time priority, much more so than when
when we were there, because you have these knuckleheads out
there that have these two dollar bets and five dollars
bets or big bets, you know, now focusing on eighteen

(10:58):
and nineteen twenty year old you know email or male
student athletes saying Hi, I lost my money because of you,
and so that kind of you know, berating all the
time can really affect people and and can sway people,
and so you know, addressing their mental health is a big,
big thing we do nowadays.

Speaker 5 (11:13):
So he asked Ricky what he's doing in his job
in his capacity at what's your job because you did
talk to you're talking about Yeah.

Speaker 3 (11:22):
I work in the athletic department. I'm an administrator. I'm
a senior director of development of Waka Club and the
Waalka Club. Is that the fundraising arm of the athletic
department where We're out in the community trying to raise
these dollars that we can redirect to our student athletes,
whether it's rev share, whether it's scholarships, whether it's sports operations,
just providing the resources so these kids can go out

(11:43):
there and have a world class experience both in their
sports and on campus.

Speaker 5 (11:46):
But you also are talking to students student athletes. Definitely. Yeah,
kind of like Ricky too, kissing babies and shaking hands
and blah blah blah nah.

Speaker 4 (11:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
I mean, we want we want u of A to
be to be a special place. We want to so
to be a special place, and I think we both
realize we can be part of that just by being
in community, being you know, making sure we have a
positive face and spin on things and uh and just yeah,
just loving the community as much as they love us.

Speaker 2 (12:09):
We've talked about Arizona football being back, but overall college
football is back. This weekend, you have games such as
Texas or Texas taking on Ohio State in the Horseshoe,
the course's last college game day That morning too, Alabama
takes on Florida State in Tallahassee. You have the Tiger
teams LSU and Clemson playing in Memorial Stadium, South Carolina,

(12:32):
and then of course you have a my Notre Dame
in Miami.

Speaker 5 (12:35):
Some good matchups this weekend. Yeah, no, I'm excited. You know.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
It's it's it's it's here. You know, we had we
had week zero was a little bit of an appetizer,
you know what I mean. But now here week one,
and like you mentioned, there's some some great games at
Texas Ohio State game right off the bat. Obviously, you
know it's opening weekend for Arizona, So this is an
exciting time.

Speaker 4 (12:52):
I love college football.

Speaker 6 (12:54):
I tell you one thing, college football brin, a young
quarterback starting your first game on national TV, going on
a road to Ohio State is not gonna be fun.

Speaker 5 (13:07):
I totally agree with you to.

Speaker 6 (13:08):
I mean, I can see all the hype and everything
behind Texas. You're going to the big House and you're
going against the Ohio State team that's got a pretty
good defense.

Speaker 5 (13:19):
National champions at home at home. No, you're right, you know,
I think this is one of the first times the
number one team goes into a season favorite. Oh no, no,
ounther Dug goes anunderdog too. Obviously. One of the toughest
places to play in the country should be how do
you how do you watch football? And I say that
as a fan, as a former player, as a coach,

(13:39):
how do you watch it on TV?

Speaker 1 (13:44):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (13:44):
This is how Saturday's got Feel sorry for repleating. So
how do you? I mean, what kind of what kind
of eye? Surgeon's eye? Coaches? I you know, it's it's
a mix of things.

Speaker 6 (13:54):
Because as a coach, you'll sit there and say, oh,
personal group is coming in and it's gonna be a run,
it's gonna be a patch. You know, you can kind
of follow Tennessee's based on personnel groupings that go in
the game. Uh, you can watch it a different way.
Just watch players that you know and you want to
see them do well. And then you get excited to
watch coaches, certain coaches their style of how they coach,
and uh it's a chess match.

Speaker 5 (14:15):
And then with a live pieces that do what they
want to do. Sometimes you enjoy it. I love it.

Speaker 2 (14:20):
Okay, I stand go out here for breaking news. Uh
Colorado has retired. There Ralphie, Ralphie the sixth.

Speaker 5 (14:28):
Uh. She she retired tuesday.

Speaker 2 (14:29):
Her names Ember and the replacement is in training right
now but may not be training.

Speaker 4 (14:35):
I have a chance.

Speaker 5 (14:36):
Now you don't have to shoot. Yeah, just run. I
don't know.

Speaker 4 (14:40):
I'm not sure if that's breaking news, but I will
go with it.

Speaker 7 (14:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (14:44):

we got Ricky Hunley. Now on the phone, we have
Brian Peterson from Acydesertswarm dot com. Save me from these guys, Brian, please.

Speaker 7 (19:43):
Thanks for having me. What's going on over there?

Speaker 5 (19:46):
Well, chaos, chaos. I have Ricky and I have Reggie,
So the right there's chaos. Uh tell me how radio
is this football team for Saturday?

Speaker 7 (19:55):
I mean they're as ready as you can be after
thirty practice or whatever you have where you're just hitting
against the other team. I think there's an anxious nature
to that where you just want to be able to
play against someone else and see how it all works out.
I mean, they know what the other side is doing
in practice, and now you get to be a little
bit more uncertain and have that guess work. And I

(20:17):
think they just want to play a game.

Speaker 5 (20:19):
Your colleague here, Jue says that in his observations, this
team is better than last year at least partty more talented.
Is that correct? Athletic? Would you agree? And can you
talk about that?

Speaker 7 (20:32):
I think across the board they probably are better in
terms of just looking at not having the glaring holes.
Whether or not they are good enough, I don't know yet.
I just think that they addressed what they needed, went
out got the players that they thought would fit best,
rather than this last offseason where they just had to
try to hold on to whoever they could and then

(20:54):
just plug in some holes at the last minute and
not really put that have that opportunity to have full
effort to address what they needed across the board. So,
I mean, whether these players pan out is uncertain. That's
what the games are for. But I think that they
feel like they have the roster that is capable of winning.

Speaker 5 (21:14):
So it's my impression and just having talked to him
one time or a couple of times with Brennan directly,
that he's more within himself this year, more confident, more
whatever the word is. You sense that too, More comfortable?

Speaker 7 (21:30):
Yeah, yeah, I mean it was the last year. Everything
about it was just such a whirlwind and getting hired
in January and having to spend your first handful of
months just trying to retain your roster, and it was
just it was it was like a year zero. How
it was almost for Jedfish within a different format. I mean,

(21:50):
they they had much more talent than what Jed had,
but it was just it was so discombobulated. And you know,
it's it's not that he wasn't ready for the higher life,
but he just he didn't know what it necessarily took.
And now there is, so there's really not an excuse.
Now if the same problems that came up last year
with just the way the team is coach and all that,

(22:11):
if that continues to happen, then that's more of an
issue because you've had the opportunity to see what you
need to do, and if it doesn't then that's a problem.

Speaker 5 (22:19):
Ricky, could you comment on that of that observation, just
he feels more more more comfortable with who he is Brennan.
Oh absolutely.

Speaker 6 (22:30):
I mean I'm around a coach Brennan and and you
know they have bought in one.

Speaker 5 (22:36):
I wanted to ask that question.

Speaker 6 (22:37):
Okay, good and and and that's the key when you
you got to there's still a young team, because I mean,
you've got sixty one new faces and I'm when I
first thought it, I was like, how do you take
half of a team and all of a sudden you've
got to have a new team the next year. And
Coach Brennan has done an incredible job of bringing these
guys together. They do so many things together, whether it's

(22:59):
a magician comes in and magic and you know, they
have so much fun together.

Speaker 5 (23:04):
These guys that they.

Speaker 6 (23:05):
Genuinely like each other, and they genuinely respect each other,
and they they're willing to work hard together.

Speaker 5 (23:11):
And uh, you know he pushes them. He pushes them hard.

Speaker 6 (23:13):
I mean the way Collen Carol, the Stremth coach, push
those guys during the summer. I mean I thought they
were all gonna quit and just leave, but they've come together.

Speaker 5 (23:21):
They looked pretty pretty good in the spring.

Speaker 6 (23:23):
And now you know, I was out there today and
I was like, man, this team is looking like a team,
you know, and we got some size. Joe did a
great job of finding some big boys and bringing them in.
Our defensive line is one look totally different.

Speaker 5 (23:34):
You know.

Speaker 6 (23:35):
We got some linebackers that can run and uh, you know,
we got a secondary and you know that can you know,
cover some people down. I'm excited because you know Danny Gonzalez,
his defense is going to be getting after people.

Speaker 5 (23:47):
You know, I remember what Rocky Long did at San Diego.

Speaker 6 (23:51):
Stayed back in the day and you were pulling your
hair out trying to defend him. And you know, Seth
Deggy Man, I'll tell you what, he's got to be
the hire the year. You know, this guy, it's got
so much energy and you know he's coming in. It's
the old Mike Leach system is running, shooting the ball
is out on that air raid system you know they
get rid of. But you come from a system at Marshall.

(24:12):
They ran the football one of the tops in the league.
And so that's exciting. It's exciting. But it all comes
together and and and you got guys now just want
to chomp in a de bit to play special teams.
I remember a few years ago guys like I don't
play special teams, Like, you know what, You're never going
to play making the NFL if you don't.

Speaker 5 (24:28):
Play special teams, because you may be the sixth or
seventh receiver.

Speaker 6 (24:32):
So you better run. Now guys want to play, you know.
And so guy's excited about playing football so bright. Which
side of the ball is going to be better in
the first game?

Speaker 12 (24:42):
Uh?

Speaker 7 (24:43):
You know, I think for this team it would probably
be the defensive side, just because they they saw what
Hawaii is going to do, and especially with the fact
that Hawaii's quarterback could be a little limited. I think
Danny Gonvalaz is going to try to be very, very
very aggressive to try to really throw this guy off,
Mike Alheid and see how mobile he can possibly be.

(25:06):
And there's been so much promise of that aggression and
all of the different fronts and the different jumping around
to try to disguise everything. I think that that's really
going to stand out the offense. I mean, it comes
down to timing and whether or not everybody is able.

Speaker 5 (25:22):
To do it.

Speaker 7 (25:22):
All those pieces fit in all at one time. If
one guy blocks wrong, that can kind of throws himself off.
So I think you could see a little bit of
the growing pains there, especially because of how fast it is.
It'd be different if this is a little bit more
slower developing and it gives people that opportunity to fall
into place. So, I mean, I would expect to see

(25:43):
both sides look like they've been practicing for a while
and have their idea, but I think that the defensive
side would probably be where it would look most crisp
Right now.

Speaker 5 (25:54):
The special teams, especially the kicking game, has been spoiled
with a guy named Loop the last couple of years.
What's the situation there with the air apparent.

Speaker 7 (26:05):
Yeah, it's Michael Salgadomedina, who was the punter last year
as a true freshman, is listed as a starter as
both the punter and kicker, And while that wasn't the
plan going into camp, there were a couple other guys
that were competing for the place kicking job. Right now,
it's sell goat Omdina's to lose, and he'll be that
guy right away. I mean, he's got a strong leg,

(26:28):
but I don't know if he can't really compare him
to Tyler Loop. I wouldn't think that they'd be like
instantly asking him to try to go for a few
goals in the fifties and whatnot. And if you think
about it, Loop wasn't asked to do that until Brennan
got here. Jetfish never really tried to have him go
for anything super long. And really, I mean, with the

(26:50):
way that this offense is worked, supposed to operate and
be able to get those those yards and work fast.

Speaker 5 (26:57):
If you're.

Speaker 7 (26:59):
Three yards short and you're at your at the forty,
you're probably going to be going for it anyway. So
I don't think that he has to be asked to
make those long field goals. It's just a matter of
being able to make the ones that are when you're
inside uh inside the twenty. If you have to go
for field goal in the red zone, you need to
be making those.

Speaker 3 (27:19):
Yeah, I know I'm excited for this. To mean, I'm
not a football guy per se, but you're at the games. Yeah,
I'm at all the games, you know, cheering on the
guys and kind of you know, working stadium a little bit.

Speaker 4 (27:28):
But yeah, I'm excited for this group.

Speaker 3 (27:30):
A lot of new faces and new concepts that you said,
you know, coach Brennan has a better idea of kind
of what it takes to compete at this level, and
he makes some adjustments, and so everyone should be really
optimistic about what things are going to look like, going
for it on both sides of the ball.

Speaker 5 (27:42):
I'm curious, I'm curious to all you guys. Do you
think that maybe last year, and I'm not trying to
be an apologist for anybody, that maybe last year was
the aberration and they had to go through that to
get to this point and be a better team. Does
that make sense? Okay, here's the same six well.

Speaker 6 (28:00):
As name a team that had that many ACLS that
did well? Okay, name one. I couldn't tell you. Florida
State they had a lot they didn't do well. Oregon
State had a lot they didn't do well. You know,
it's hard to move forward in any organization where you
love you'll keep people. Yeah, you got to do this

(28:22):
radio show by yourself.

Speaker 5 (28:24):
You can do it.

Speaker 7 (28:24):
You can't do what?

Speaker 5 (28:25):
Come on, Glen? What about your what your thoughts?

Speaker 13 (28:31):
Me?

Speaker 5 (28:32):
Yeah?

Speaker 7 (28:33):
You know they had some winnable games last year, and
I mean it easily could have been six and six
and all that. And the way I've always kind of
looked at things is that when there's a bad year,
it don't evaluate off the bad year. You evaluate off
the year after the bad year to see.

Speaker 5 (28:47):
Where things come There.

Speaker 7 (28:48):
Really wasn't anything like trying to compare twenty four to
twenty three is very unfair, not just because they change
of personnel, but the coaching and all that kind of stuff.
That was the first year and now you look for
the improved and kind of move from there. There's also
the fact that, unfortunately in Arizona's history, every time there's
been one of these ten wins seasons, there's a backslide

(29:10):
the next year, which you would expect a little bit.
You just don't expect going from ten to three to
four and eight. And I've been somebody that has always
felt that an Arizona program that is consistently winning seven
or eight games a year, with the opportunity to go
about that on occasion, is a very good baseline to
be working with the expectation to try to win ten

(29:31):
to twelve games every year is asking a lot in
this sport because there's only a handful of schools that
can do it on a regular basis, So you know,
getting back to that seven eight win type of area
and then building from there is what you want to do.
They're not going to get it all back within one
year and go ten wins to four wins to ten wins.

(29:53):
It's more of a gradual thing. Jedfish went from twenty
game losing streak one and eleven to five and seven
to ten and three. That was much faster than what
you would normally expect, but there was some increments to it.
So that's all that anyone should really be looking for,
is a gradual improvement from.

Speaker 5 (30:11):
This past year. Will well this team as Noah goes,
this team goes, or was asking too much? Was saying
too much?

Speaker 7 (30:20):
I mean yes, but it's there's nothing to indicate that
this system won't be something that Noah thrives in. The
system for last year was not did not fit what
he is really good at, and.

Speaker 5 (30:35):
It definitely showed.

Speaker 7 (30:36):
So if he's getting the ball out fast and he's
making good decisions, then it should be working well. He's
never looked like somebody that was indecisive. It was just
this past year there were a lot of things that
just weren't working overall beyond what he was doing and
that day. He has a system. But as Ricky mentioned,

(30:59):
when he was at Marshall, he ran the ball up
because when he got there and he realized that the
guy he had was much more mobile, he changed.

Speaker 5 (31:07):
What he did.

Speaker 7 (31:07):
And then he comes to Arizona and he's doing the
same thing. Is that he's fitting his stuff to what
Noah does best. So there's no reason to think that
it wouldn't be affected.

Speaker 5 (31:17):
So to all you guys, what has to happen for
Arizona to have a winning season? Go ahead, first, ute.

Speaker 7 (31:30):
To have a winning season. I mean, when they have
the opportunities to win those those winnable games, they have
to take it. And that comes with partly staying healthy,
and I think that that definitely got in the way
this past year. I think they just also have to
if there are things that go wrong here in this
first game, you address it quickly and you and you

(31:50):
try to adjust it after the first game. Last year,
beyond that, there were some clear things that were not
going well with the offense and it didn't look like
those guys a draft, and I would think that this
group would be a little bit more proactive and trying
to fix stuff. So I think it's they need to
win the games that are that look like they can
be winnable, and just try to stay healthy.

Speaker 5 (32:12):
As best as you can. Ricky.

Speaker 6 (32:15):
I think, uh, stability and the offensive line, play the
quarterback play and you know, being able to run it past,
have some balance. I think they got to start fast
and create some momentum. I think we're definitely going to
improve on defense and buy some pressure to people, and

(32:37):
uh just established an identity who oh we are.

Speaker 5 (32:40):
You know, third down is going to be big.

Speaker 6 (32:41):
Thus we're gonna be good on third down defense and
good on third down offense and create turnovers and don't turn.

Speaker 5 (32:47):
The ball over. Yeah, yeah, we will have a good year.
We can do those things. Okay, I'll get back to you, Richie,
because because you're kind of the administration, they're working hard
to make that happen as well. They have the food
yesterday and the things are changes they're trying to happen.
And that's key to it too, because you need butts
in the seats.

Speaker 3 (33:04):
You need butts in the seats, You need that energy.
You know that the players need to feel it. Theed
to be palpable where you know, you're really kind of
being at the twelfth man and kind of you know,
pushing the team forward, especially in good times and especially
in bad times when things aren't going well. That's what
you need to do that and I think the the
athletics department has done doing a great job of trying
to address that.

Speaker 4 (33:21):
You know, we have making the.

Speaker 3 (33:22):
Overall experience from driveway to stadium back to your house,
you know, fully fully encompassing. You guys are part of
that with with the Homley Show, with the Humley Huddle,
that'd be part of that experience and getting that knowledge
where we're getting up for the game and now we're
getting to the stadium and ready, but you know we
have to bear down bash going on as one of
the tailgates and dust. So we've got some field suites

(33:43):
that you're going to see for that first game where
it's going to give Arizona Stadium a different look. And
so Desiree Refrance will she she you know, and her
team and on our team because I'm part of that.
You know, we're putting our heads together to make this
experience where people want to come to the stadium, want
to support these great student athletes, support this team and
really provide that energy to kind of get them over
the home.

Speaker 5 (34:01):
So last question, Brian, and you've been doing this a
long time at this point, I ask, and so, so,
why do you sense a vibe? What kind of vibe
do you sense? I know? In basketball coming up? They
play for you right away, it looks like it's gonna
have a great roster that's gonna be a vibe. What
do you get from this? It's the first game coming up?

Speaker 7 (34:21):
I mean this first game after you watched what Hawaii did.
They look like a team that has that has flaws
and is a team that Arizona should be able to
beat and probably beat comfortably. If their struggles there, I
think that can be an indicator that maybe things aren't
as fixed as people would hope. And then that's followed

(34:43):
with Weaver State, which is an FCS game which it's
there for to win and to try to improve. The
real stuff starts with the third game, Kansas State, and
then after a bye, it gets super real because you
go to Iowa State on the road in the big
tubble and they had just played in the conference championship
last year. But that's how it was this past year.

(35:06):
New Mexico State in New Mexico game looked really good.
Then the NAU game there were some issues, got blown
out at Kansas State, regrouped, looked played their best game
of the season at Utah, but that's when the injury
started to pile up, and combining that with the offensive inefficiency,
everything just kind of went downhill from there. So I
think that they being able to have this good first.

Speaker 5 (35:28):
Game and then build from there.

Speaker 7 (35:31):
I think the confidence will continue to be there. Everyone's
confident right now and energetic and wants to do all this.
But until you play a game and you see how
everything is, you really don't know for certain how people
are going to react, and then you adjust from there.

Speaker 5 (35:44):
Great, Brian, thanks so much. We'll see you Saturday. Appreciate
it all right, Thanks for having me. Yeah, we'll take
a break here and talk more about the football and
basketball teams. If you're an Arizona men's basketball fan, you'd

Speaker 5 (40:02):
Hey, welcome back to win the ball here on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. You're Juan, You're Reggie,
You're Ricky. You guys have been around long enough. You
as former players, yeada YadA. Now your administrators in the system.
Do you guys get Tom Guinea's kind of a stupid word.
But a new school year, a new season, UH year's

(40:23):
year of hope, both basketball, football, baseball, all that stuff.

Speaker 3 (40:28):
For me, it's just it's just working on a college campus.
You know, there's always uh youth, there's always energy around
the building, and it had the tennes City. You know,
you make you want to feel yeah, and you kind
of be in on the no and hippie the we're old,
and yeah it doesn't doesn't. Yeah, I think just being
around young athletes, you know, puts a little air in
your chest. And as being a former athlete, you want

(40:49):
to be a good representation as well. So yeah, it
keeps you young. I love it. I don't like every
year hearing the incoming classes the birth year all right,
it seems it seem pretty crazy. It'll be like, yeah,
this year's class was born in you know, twenty twenty,
you know, twenty oh three, and I'm like.

Speaker 4 (41:04):
Like, where we getting old?

Speaker 3 (41:05):
But uh yeah, but no, it's just great being around
the building. And like I said, we have world class students,
student athletes, and it's just kind of fun being around.

Speaker 5 (41:12):
Without a doubt, it keeps you young.

Speaker 6 (41:14):
I mean it starts with our ad and come all
the way down and she's got tremendous energy, des ray
In and stuff and Brent, it's just just like these
people got a lot of energy, and then we can
keep up with these kids, and so it's fun to
be around. I mean I look forward to it every year.
You know, I think we're gonna win them all. You've
how many schools have you been to? I've been at

(41:34):
oh College, College, see uh, Arizona, Missouri, USC Missouri, Florida.

Speaker 5 (41:44):
Four that's four four five. Okay, fine, What what makes
or what separates Arizona from the others?

Speaker 6 (41:53):
Well, this place is beautiful, I mean, you know, from
the mountains to the palm trees to the beautiful women,
and it's it's great. I mean, why would you want
to be in any other place. I mean it's like
the last hitting gym that people don't know about, you know.
And there are a lot of people you talk to
them too soon they're glad that we're not like a
big city like a Phoenix, And oh yeah, no question.

(42:16):
People have to go out of their way to come
down here because they don't want them to find out.

Speaker 5 (42:19):
Well, Reggie just talked about that two hours ago.

Speaker 6 (42:21):
You go to Phoenix, it's just flat, you know, and
they get bebes and Dutch, you know, you know, they
got we got you know, we get a little monsoon.
We've got beautiful mountains and the shadows come in.

Speaker 5 (42:34):
It's perfect, you know.

Speaker 6 (42:36):
And once everything goes back under one hundred again, it's
like the perfect place to be.

Speaker 5 (42:40):
So when you were gone for so long, right all
this year, did you know that you'd come back eventually.

Speaker 6 (42:46):
Yeah, I'm any place I've ever been, I never felt
like I was going to be there forever.

Speaker 5 (42:50):
I always knew how I'd end up back here. Yeah,
and you too, runch Yeah, in Japan, even everywhere.

Speaker 3 (42:56):
Yeah, I mean I I've lived overseas twelve years in
seven different countries, and Tucson was always our off season
home when I got done playing or excuse me, coaching
my last my six year in Japan, we were really
at that kind of point like do we go back
to California, southern California my wife is from where I
grew up, or do we go back to Tucson.

Speaker 4 (43:12):
It was a no brainer. We go back to Tucson.

Speaker 3 (43:13):
We can, we can dig a plane into southern California,
just because we knew the lifestyle that we would have
here and so and being a basketball guy, I think
that recognition goes back to Fred Snowden, you know, when
he was here and then he was able to kind
of get this program up and running and looking around saying, hey,
this is a pretty good setup. And then obviously coach
Olsen came in a couple of years later after that
and just kind of cemented it that, hey, this is

(43:34):
a hidden gym in the desert that you can do
really big things here. And uh and I think that's
led us even till today.

Speaker 5 (43:40):
You know, Tommy, right, you spent some time with time
we talk to Tommy Rick, tell me lawyer. Yeah, yeah,
so let me hold that time because he wasn't sure
how Richie. You've seen him. I saw him last week
and we've seen him before. He really likes his team,
as he should and tell me about it because they're
very talented.

Speaker 3 (43:56):
Yeah, yeah, they're young. I mean it's actually it's a
good balance. It's a good balance for some of you know,
have some really young exceptional talent. You know, they're bringing
back three four starters to this team. But I think
just the overall depth that he feels that they have eight, nine, ten,
eleven guys that have resulted in competitive practices, the where guys,
the energy seems to be in the right place for
this time of year.

Speaker 4 (44:15):
Maybe they're a little even ahead of schedule.

Speaker 3 (44:17):
And so when guys are pushing one another when it's
iron on iron, yeah, you know, that's that's a good sign.
And so I think he's really happy with that. But
you know, they you know, we look at Jaden Bradley
as a returning leader to this team.

Speaker 4 (44:29):
He's efficient.

Speaker 3 (44:30):
He's a Noah Fafeta of the basketball where takes care
of the basketball. He just does a great job of that.
And I think we're gonna see additional scoring punch out
of him. But you know, Anthony del Orsol is playing
with great confidence, Malk Crevaus is moving well, Toby a waka.
With the four returnings, now you have co Op Pete
and Brandon Burras just to name two young guys.

Speaker 4 (44:47):
I mean, it's gangbusters.

Speaker 3 (44:48):
But you know, at the same time, I think Tommy
realizes you need to be at this level just to compete,
you know, in the Big twelve or with some of
the elite level teams. So this is this isn't like
something like we're just right ahead of the game, like
you need to be a this level just compete.

Speaker 4 (45:00):
But for where they're at right now, I know they're
very happy.

Speaker 5 (45:03):
One of the things you just said, and I totally
believe in it because I saw it with Lude your
first team, Reggie, you were part of the second team
for a while first two years, right with Damon and
Damon and Deamon and Clide. Maybe you're the thirty guy
out with them.

Speaker 4 (45:16):
Oh yeah, my sophomore year the starting three.

Speaker 5 (45:18):
Yeah so but you but you had depth, you had depth,
and and the second team gave the first team fits.
I mean that's how they became better and you became better.
That's what you see now. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (45:28):
No, I mean I'm going against Davis Totamarow. Maybe maybe
you want the top two or three players history. I think
in the history of the game. I think you really
look at date history. What do you have Number two? Yeah,
I mean he's super high his NBA career. I go
against him every day. So here's one of the best
defensive players, and you have a history going against one
of the best. You know, so where where where you know?
With love, you know, really sharpening our crafts and getting better.

(45:50):
And then I got calib read. You got Corey Williams
going against Chris Mills to McDonald America. He got Edge
Stokes going against JB. I mean, you can just go
down the line. And then as I get older, I'm
a senior and I got JT. You know, Biden at
my heels and he's coming at me. A Miles Simon
and Michael Dickerson. So we really you know, there was
really a culture there where we're just kind of pulling
each other up one by one just through you know,
being fierty competitive and being brothers and just really embracing

(46:14):
all of that. So now that that's back a little bit,
I think that's going to be a real benefit for
the program.

Speaker 5 (46:18):
No question, because I asked you about Tommy, what are
your impressions of him? Well, just sitting on the floor and.

Speaker 6 (46:24):
Watching him coach, I mean, he connects with his players
in a special way. I mean I'm just looking as
an observer. I mean it seems to be very detail oriented.
You know, he develops young players quickly. He gets them
ready to go. They're in every game, they're they're they're
all in and uh and you know, I like why

(46:47):
watching him coach.

Speaker 5 (46:47):
I like all of it. You mean, you know, he's
not just a guy.

Speaker 6 (46:51):
I mean, this guy is an international coach, you know,
and you don't get to be that guy to coach
national teams without having something special about it.

Speaker 5 (46:59):
And he has a lot of looting him.

Speaker 4 (47:01):
There is a lot of looting him.

Speaker 3 (47:02):
There is that that that that relaxed confidence that you know,
he's created a culture that within the lines that there
is this intensity and there's some business to it.

Speaker 4 (47:10):
But at the same time he doesn't lose sight.

Speaker 3 (47:12):
He does a great job of just of messaging, of
really connecting with the players, making sure it is you know,
that's still no phrase of player's program. I think guys
feed off that, and they realized, Hey, if I listen
and I really I really listened to this gentleman, that
he's gonna put me in position to be successful here
and and he' shown the track record of getting guys
to the next levels.

Speaker 5 (47:29):
Well, it's that development. I mean, it's set development. You
can because Luke did it. I mean, you guys were
ready pretty much for the NBA once you got out
of here. You guys knew the system. Yeah, NBA people
would talk about that they know how to play the game.

Speaker 3 (47:40):
Over like four decades, we're still in the top three
or four in terms of producing NBA and the numbers
of guys we put into the NBA.

Speaker 4 (47:46):
And I don't think that's by accident.

Speaker 5 (47:47):
Yep, Ricky, you mentioned something, Oh for Reggie, who made
you better? Who made you better? Here? Well, it was
why I find my coaches.

Speaker 6 (47:56):
I mean, you take Tom Rogman, I got scared rad
of that you know he was you know, it's just
you were just a guy who was here to learn
and to get better. Larry Smith, Chuck a model, moe Anthy.
It was all their coaches. They they were you know,
they were invested in you, and you know they respected

(48:18):
what you did on the field. They respected you if
you handle your business off the field, and they would
get you back in.

Speaker 5 (48:24):
Line if you got out of mind. What about a player, though,
was it something that you went against h on that
side of the ball, maybe on the same team and
maybe someone on another team another the USC or or well,
I'll tell you what. There's a guy that.

Speaker 6 (48:42):
Marcus Allen was one of the best players I ever
played against, you know, in college and in the prose. Yeah,
you know, Charles White. You know, I had similar respect
for that guy because he was a fullback.

Speaker 5 (48:54):
First.

Speaker 6 (48:54):
You got to be the fullback at the USC before
you become the tailback. And uh, you know, trying to
run those guys in was hard.

Speaker 5 (49:02):
You know. There was a lot of great players.

Speaker 6 (49:05):
I mean, one guy had most respectful It was probably
Kenny Easley. He was the biggest, baddest safety I've ever
seen on a football field, and he terrorized offenses. I
mean he was every bit of six four two thirty.
And you know, guys like that, you know, they're impressive
to me. Just see how a person that big and

(49:27):
that smooth can play.

Speaker 5 (49:30):
What about here in Arizona. Oh, there was a lot
of good players that played here.

Speaker 6 (49:33):
There was on Van Johnson was like one of the
players who transitioned from a running back to a receiver.

Speaker 5 (49:41):
He got great skills.

Speaker 6 (49:43):
Brad Anderson probably had more yardsburg catch than any player
in Arizona history on average, you know, and he got
drafted and one on and played with Chicago Bears, and
you know, there's some great things there. But if you
take a Brad, you take a day it would you know,
Byron Evans, you take a Dana Wells. These are guys

(50:06):
who transitioned to be great guys off the field in
their careers after football, as well as being good in football. Yeah,
I think just just listen to you now, we'll probably
have a player or two or four on the London
kid as men as you want answer, I call it him.

Speaker 5 (50:23):
Honestly, that's no doubt about that. So I'm looking forward
to that because I haven't met some of these guys
you know, I met Byron Evans last year with things.
But there's a there was a kind of a hidden,
hidden treasure from those times. It was the lunch pail guys.
Just dude, you just play it and wanted to beat
the crap out of you. True.

Speaker 6 (50:43):
Yeah, we love we love playing ball. I mean it
was hard because it was hot. I mean, uh, my
first day on campus it was two fourteen and afternoon.
We didn't practice in the morning, we didn't have an indoor.
It was walk them out to the practice field and
you look downtown. You see the time in the temperature
two o'clock in the afternoon's one hundred and fourteen degrees.

Speaker 5 (51:02):
Yeah, and I'm like, where am I? Why am I here?
Why am I here? Yeah?

Speaker 6 (51:07):
But then you know when one hundred divies go away, man,
it's our advantage. Yeah, it's our advantage. Right, what did
you what you got here? Because I remember when you
were committing to Arizona. Cut you at the bear Down Gym.
You were with batter Day the summer summer and you're
thinking I'm coming.

Speaker 4 (51:22):
Yeah I was thinking that.

Speaker 3 (51:23):
I was, you know, definitely, yeah, you're that Well, now
it was a summer n it was a summer camp.
About three or four of us on Modern Day came
out to check it out. Coach me night, I was
a Modern Day head. Coach said hey, man, we're gonna
we'll send you a camp dish. We go to a
camp this year. Check out some campuses, and so Arizona
was one of the schools, and I was, yeah, I
mean there was going to. When I came out here,
I had a great experience. I was kind of looking
around like this is pretty cool. I was against some

(51:44):
other schools Billanova and UCLA and others. But when I
got here to to kind of like what Ricky just said,
my first day on Tucson campus one hundred and fifteen degrees, Yeah,
I called my mama, So I think I made a mistake.
She said, no, it's going to cool off, don't worry,
and so and it did. But yeah, yeah, so I
had a little bit of that. But just kind of
go to your question earlier. Chris Mills was that guy
for me. He kind of came in. He was a senior.
He was like a big brother type guy.

Speaker 5 (52:05):
Yea.

Speaker 3 (52:05):
He embraced that role and I and I was listening
and obviously coach Olsen, you know, I'm a coach pleaser,
and so everything I did every day was the kids
attention to please him, and that resulted me playing hard.
And then when I started seeing that he valued kind
of what I was doing and then really took appreciation
of that and was gonna you know that.

Speaker 4 (52:21):
That just gave me more confidence than what I was
doing and really led me on my way.

Speaker 5 (52:25):
And he already knew because he was why he recruited you.

Speaker 4 (52:27):
Yeah, I was a Mota day guy. The programs are
so similar.

Speaker 6 (52:31):
Yeah, remind me about a guy you told about the
guy who influenced me. This guy's name is Gus Tucker.
He was a hell of a linebacker. Where was Yeah,
he was here, blew out his knee. So he was
my host for my recruiting, my recruiting trip, but he
never got to play again because of his leg. Did
you were you his I will end up being his
replacement after you know, Yeah, one of the seniors got

(52:52):
hurt and he had to start as a.

Speaker 5 (52:54):
Timing timing Yeah, okay, Planning tonight, Reggie.

Speaker 3 (52:58):
Yeah, my plans to night. Me and my wife are
gonna go go out to dinner. I think we're gonna
go to Brian Jeffries and his wife, and there's a
special thing going on. Zen Berger is the partnered up
with the UH the U U of a Steel Center
to fight type one diabetes.

Speaker 4 (53:12):
So thirty percent of all the proceeds tonight are going
to go to the center.

Speaker 3 (53:15):
Doctor Kashawn, he's world class over there at the Steel
at Steel Center, he fights all the immune diseases. So
if you're around tonight between five and nine, UH zen
Burger on Grants, Zimberger and Grant come down. I have
a great meal, and those proceeds to go to fight
this fight, this naty disease till nine o'clock. Till nine o'clock.

Speaker 5 (53:31):
Great, Thanks everybody, Thanks to both of you guys. We'll
talk it to everybody tomorrow.
