Speaker 1 (00:22):
This is I on the Ball, Breaking news on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty.
Speaker 3 (00:28):
Oh, Lovely Friday, Lovely Friday. Ninos game day tomorrow. I
don't know if you guys know Arizona Football LUs third
season tomorrow, playing to WAHI against seven thirty at Arizona Stadium.
Obviously been talking about it all week, exciting, you know,
going into it.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
I'm ready, man, got a new lid.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
What would be what would be the disappointment for the
crowd under thirty five?
Speaker 5 (00:57):
Yeah, if you get like a little over thirty thousand
in the place half empty, Yeah, I'd be really pissed
for a crowd.
Speaker 4 (01:03):
Yeah. I like to think that we can that. I
think they can get forty you know again.
Speaker 5 (01:09):
And I and look and I don't blame fans this,
you know, this season, after what happened last year, for saying, Okay,
I'm you know, I'm gonna give this some time, but
I wish they wouldn't.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
But I understand it.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Of your your friends, your friend base, I'll give you
twenty how and he didn't renew.
Speaker 5 (01:29):
Everybody that you know, my close friend, they renewed. I
know a couple that didn't know. We're upset from yeah previously,
I'm tired. I'm tired of going again. Yeah, no, I'm
you know, pretty much everybody that I know.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
Are they but they're not to the level you are
or are they?
Speaker 5 (01:43):
Yeah, pretty much they're going to renew, you know, because look,
you know, our our deal with with theres on a football,
it's more than a game, right, It's a social thing. First,
we get together. It allows us to get together at
tailgates for the weekend and we see each other there
and all that stuff, and so it's more than you know,
(02:05):
it's a it's a big social part of our lives
as well, and has been for a really long time.
Speaker 3 (02:09):
Okay, line is set at sixteen and a half in
the over under his fifty three and a.
Speaker 6 (02:14):
Half, so that it dropped a point because it was
seventeen on ESPN yesterday on ESPN seventeen and what.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
Was the other one? Sixteen and a half and.
Speaker 7 (02:23):
What the over under his fifty three and a half?
Speaker 4 (02:25):
Fifty three and a half. I might take that, Yeah,
me too, I would. I had a really strange thing today.
Speaker 5 (02:31):
You know the bear Stanford Stavin, the bear from you know,
he's on Fox now. He said he hates taking overs
because he said, he says, because if if one or
two things go wrong, it won't have it won't it
won't go over, he said, And one or two things
go wrong every game, but he can.
Speaker 7 (02:52):
Say that about and you can't.
Speaker 8 (02:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (02:53):
But you know what, dude, it's it's fifty to fifty,
you know it really is, so he said.
Speaker 5 (02:58):
He he goes, I hate rooting for and I'm like,
I hate rooting from no points.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Well, here's your thing because you know this because you
run the group that more people bet the favorite, bet
favorites and overs right, Yeah, for whatever. There's some psychology
in there.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
And I'm not We have a saying in the guys
that I hang with. Life's too short to take the
under that.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
I think that stretches stretches you out more than anything,
because then you come, don't don't.
Speaker 5 (03:25):
You know, you know, you don't you watch it differently
than you would? Yeah? Yeah, otherwise, Yeah, I mean I'm
always rooting for points, so but yeah, he said, he
said it like that, he said, I hate.
Speaker 4 (03:36):
Rooting for points. What a weirdo.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
Keeping it going with some more local stuff, Arizona soccer
dropped their first game of the season, so they're now
three and one. They lost to Stanford six to zero.
I mean that's number one in the country though, you know.
Speaker 4 (03:53):
Are they Yeah, okay, that's a bad score.
Speaker 7 (03:56):
Yeah, it doesn't look great.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
But going over to women's basketball, Arizona's is Isis Bay
is signed to a Greek team. Oh there's a tough one,
al Amintas. I think that's how you say. I'm pretty
sure it's an Athens signed. Oh well, finished her season
(04:19):
her last season last year, and then she obviously signed
with that new Greek team. Recently, the Wildcat Classic is
starting for volleyball tonight.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
Oh that's right. They play it all day tomorrow.
Speaker 7 (04:33):
Right with University of Arizona.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (04:37):
I guess it's not serving off. I don't know.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
I don't know because it's not kickoff. It's not it's
not a tip off. Yeah, I don't know what it
would be. But they start their game. They stayed their
season against the Alabama State University that is going down
at six if you guys want to get down there
and onto some ex eternal more national stuff. The bookmaker
(05:03):
tied to Otani's interpreter gets a one year sentence.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
One year. We'restining like gazillions of dollars.
Speaker 7 (05:11):
Yeah, they should, they should, They should ban Atwani for
a year.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
Two. This is not my fight and that. Yeah, that
wasn't very funny. Oh tough crowd.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
Diamondbacks are in LA this weekend, starts at seven to ten.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
They do the Hill three game or what Dodgers.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Yes, doors do yerss and crappy.
Speaker 4 (05:39):
D bags.
Speaker 7 (05:42):
Some more baseball news. That's a little bit sad.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
Giants pitcher Randy Moffatt passed away seventies Did that.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
Happen last night?
Speaker 7 (05:51):
Today?
Speaker 4 (05:51):
I believe what did he have? Because did they say?
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Because remember he was out for a while and then
he came back and he was thinking everybody for that
was just months ago, I mean like a few months ago.
Speaker 7 (06:03):
Yeah, it felt like that. I can't remember, but yeah, yeah,
so did he say what he had?
Speaker 4 (06:07):
No?
Speaker 7 (06:07):
I just said he passed away at seventy six.
Speaker 4 (06:10):
Who's this?
Speaker 2 (06:11):
I'm sorry, Oh, you saying Moffett.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
I'm thinking Moss, Randy Moss.
Speaker 5 (06:15):
Because he's yeah, oh yeah, it was No, he's good,
Randy Moffin, he picked for the Giants years ago.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
I'm sorry, Julie Jane kings bro Okay, okay, you know
that makes it.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
I said, you said, righty mom n No, no, okay.
Speaker 7 (06:27):
I think he's actually with back at ESPN.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Yeah, yeah, he came back. He's thank Therrity for the prayers,
and that's why. That's why it looked like the way
it looked. Really what happened?
Speaker 4 (06:37):
Cool? That makes sense.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
Giants are in, Well they're in, they're in San Francisco,
but they're playing Baltimore coming off a uh sweep of
the Cubs.
Speaker 7 (06:47):
That's always nice.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Big one that came out yesterday, Micah Parsons was traded
to the Or from the Cowboys to the Packers and
gets a record contract.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
I have no idea what the what the hell Jay
Jones is trying to do. I don't know they I
don't really care. They need to get right. You go.
You can't you can't get him. He owns the damn team.
Speaker 5 (07:08):
You know, nobody's going and nobody's gonna come and pay
the billions and billions of dollars to, you know, to
own it. I mean, if you're a Cowboys fan, aren't
you just like, what the hell are you trying to
win or not?
Speaker 4 (07:21):
No?
Speaker 3 (07:21):
And I think I think no matter what they say
at this point, you can't look at him and think
that they're trying to win this year at least, you
know what I.
Speaker 4 (07:27):
Mean, another year. I mean, I guess.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
I mean I get that that, you know, things happen,
but players like Michael Parsons are few and far between.
You know, you're lucky to get one, right, and then
you say, wow, we don't really want.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
Him right right? They should have done that way Prescott.
He's not good.
Speaker 7 (07:49):
Yeah, It's just I mean, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
It felt like it was maybe Jerry took it like personally.
Speaker 5 (07:57):
He felt disrespected by Michael Parsons, and which it's his prerogative.
He gets to do that. But again, if you're if
you're a Cowboys fan, you're going you're trying to.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
Win or not?
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Yeah, And actually I am I was talking about this
with one of the cooks at my job pays a
big Raiders guy.
Speaker 4 (08:12):
He uh.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
He brought up the point that you know, everybody says
Jerry Jones should just give it to his his kids
at this point. But then you look at Al Davis
where it's like you let Mark Davis take the reins
and it's like out of the Raiders because of.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
The bad haircut. Well kind of well, I don't know,
Genie Blust, but you know the same kind of thing.
It's hasn't been as good as was under him. Yeah,
you're right, right. Uh.
Speaker 3 (08:34):
Titans receiver Calvin Ridley, second year with the Titans, says
that he's in a better headspace after the gambling suspension
derailed his career. He was famously the one that he
was on the Jaguars at the time. I believe while
he was gambling from the facilities. I think that came
out must be like, yeah, two years ago, just around there,
(08:58):
the Patriots are set to release veteran Jabriel Peppers. They
still owe four point three to two million. And if
you guys remember, Jabriel Peppers was that big college got
very much in the similar role to Travis Hunter actually,
where he would play safety, play some offensive snaps as
(09:18):
well at Michigan. I don't think he won the Heisman
or anything, though, but I think he might have been
in the running for it big well, maybe not big.
Speaker 7 (09:28):
But one of the upsets last night that you.
Speaker 3 (09:32):
Have actually not complained about yet is Boise State losing
to South Florida thirty four to seven.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
That was I was okay with that because I didn't
touch it.
Speaker 5 (09:43):
Yeah that you know that started out and you thought,
I think Boise State went and scored first, yes, and
South Fororida just let him up. And then the great
the best player of the game was Softomore is lining
up to punt, the fake punt, lining up to punt,
(10:04):
and they send their second string quarterback out there as
the and they didn't notice that, and the guy throws
a bomb for.
Speaker 4 (10:10):
A touchdow Man.
Speaker 7 (10:12):
The boy sleep.
Speaker 4 (10:13):
You guys, they totally caught him sleep.
Speaker 5 (10:15):
And it's like, hey, wait a minute, that's not the
punter either called time out right or tell you guys
cover the ends. Yeah, right, because because the guy was
wide open and now now the pass was a little
short and he got it, got contested a little bit,
but he caught it and then broken in for a touchdown.
Speaker 4 (10:29):
That's why he's the second string quarterback. Yeah, I guess
you can say that.
Speaker 3 (10:33):
Yeah, boy or sorry. Georgia Tech and Colorado are gonna
be playing tonight. This is I think's first year without
his son's.
Speaker 4 (10:44):
Quarterback an hour and fifteen minutes.
Speaker 3 (10:46):
So that's gonna be an interesting one. He gets, getting
bolder in bolder.
Speaker 7 (10:50):
Yes, it's gonna so you get to get another look.
Speaker 5 (10:53):
Do you know what he said on an interview, He said,
they said, can tell us something about you know about
the crowds at the games, and what you know you
see the crowds and and.
Speaker 7 (11:05):
What what do you the crowd?
Speaker 5 (11:08):
He said, I think of in the second quarter it
always smells like weed in you.
Speaker 6 (11:14):
That was pretty funny for you. I don't dislike the guy,
and I think he's got a lot of character. I
just wait a second, what I don't hate the guy.
I just think he's a little arrogant. But you know,
you know, look he's interesting, that's for sure.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
Right. I'm I didn't like. I didn't I didn't like
how he.
Speaker 5 (11:35):
Came in handling players and stuff like, and then well
like and then the other day you see the thing
he was talking with players and he said he doesn't
want to wearing slides. He doesn't want toim wearing sweat
you know, sweatpants.
Speaker 7 (11:45):
In the class.
Speaker 4 (11:46):
Wait a minute, stuff like that.
Speaker 5 (11:47):
You're you're the dude that had like the the the change,
the four foot round chain around your neck with a
giant clock and gold sunglasses.
Speaker 4 (11:56):
And you're telling these guys you don't want them to
be well, what are you doing?
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Well, we saw it when we came in, and you're
gonna carry the bag all that stuff. But the funny
thing about it is coaches are doing now, doing it
now without saying all that stuff, or in front of
the cameras, right, because look, everyone has sixty one new guys. Yeah,
I mean every team's doing it, they're just not doing
it in front of cameras.
Speaker 7 (12:16):
Right, right right.
Speaker 3 (12:18):
Big games tomorrow, apart from the Arizona one, obviously, Slate
kicks off at nine with Texas and Ohio State.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
I can't wait for that game.
Speaker 3 (12:28):
Yeah, I can't either, and then continues at twelve thirty
with Alabama and FSU. FSU was talking some trash earlier
in the summer.
Speaker 4 (12:41):
The last ones we should be talking trash.
Speaker 7 (12:44):
I agree.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
And then it'll go into the nighttime around four thirty
with LSU going against Clemson, and then Sunday will also
have a great game with Notre Dame and Miami. I
always just call that the Catholics versus Convicts, and what's
always been called that since before you were born, since
before maybe since before your dad was born.
Speaker 7 (13:05):
Since since the shirt, right, yeah, yeah, I love that.
Speaker 5 (13:08):
No, no, no, nineteen eighty seven, yeah, since the shirt
that was your shirt. Oh I thought you said, I
thought you said the Sugar Bowl. No, no, the shirt. Yeah,
there was a natural hip. I was like one of
the first ones that was that National championship game that
they kind of just put together.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
Yeah, that's that's it for breaking news for me.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
All right, man, we got fine, Let's go and come
back and we'll take the on the pressers.

Hey, welcome back to the ball here on Fox Sports
fourteen fifteen. I'm Steve Rivera in today with me is
Jacins Austin. Now we have Ray Gonna give us some
Rennan Press capertence.
Speaker 4 (18:16):
Goodness here everybody. It's an exciting time of year.
Speaker 15 (18:18):
Obviously going to the first game a little over forty
eight hours out. Just our first opportunity as a football program,
our first opportunity as a you know, as a city,
as a university to own the night.
Speaker 4 (18:32):
We've been talking about that all off season. I think
that's a.
Speaker 15 (18:34):
Really really important thing, just when we talk about what
we want game day environment to be here, what we
want the atmosphere to be like. I know that our
administration has been incredibly diligent. I know a lot of
you had a chance to taste the new food and
kind of what they're stepping into in terms of what
they're providing our fans in terms of you know, food
options on game day. I think that's that's an important
(18:56):
part of it. I also think when we think about
the Pauliny Heritage Night, what that's going to be the
performance is just how important that is in terms of
our program and the history of both these universities, but
also the history of the University of Arizona and their
legacy with Coach Tomey and just so many Polynesian players
being impactful here over the years. This is a great opportunity.
(19:19):
It's going to be a great night here in Arizona Stadium.
I'm really excited for our fans. I'm excited for the
students to show up, and I think that.
Speaker 4 (19:25):
There's really important thing that I think the.
Speaker 15 (19:28):
City of Tucson, our university, our alumni, our fans need
to know is that we cannot do it without you.
We cannot do it without you. Every team that kicks
ass on Saturdays in the fall has a great fan
base that shows up and impacts the outcome of the
game everywhere. Look across the country. Where are the toughest
places to win? What do those records look like at
(19:50):
the end of the year. I promise you they're positive
and we can create that same atmosphere here at the
University of Arizona, if we will own the night and
that starts on Saturday.
Speaker 4 (20:00):
I wait to see what this team does here.
Speaker 16 (20:01):
We go thank coach starting with Justin and so you
have two honorary captains this week and Tap Boop and
and Big Jonah.
Speaker 4 (20:09):
What does that honor mean.
Speaker 3 (20:10):
To you to see them come back and how do
you reflect on their time at er that ARIASONA.
Speaker 4 (20:14):
I think it's really special. Sorry, I think it's.
Speaker 15 (20:19):
Really special that those guys want to come back. I
think it speaks to the experience they had at the
University of Arizona. I think I think it's important when
your football alumni comes back just to re engage with
the fans. And you know, obviously both of those guys,
you know, all three guys that are coming back for
this game, like they've all had, uh, you know, pretty
good start to their NFL careers, right, And so I
(20:41):
think that's something that's really special. I'm excited to see
all of them, and I think our players will be too,
and I think our fans will be. So I think
it's pretty special that that they want to come back,
that they want to engage, and I think it's fun
for us also as a program to honor them as
honorary captains.
Speaker 4 (20:55):
And last year you.
Speaker 3 (20:57):
Were given the leg by team ex grandmother and anybody
else taking that responsibility this year.
Speaker 7 (21:02):
And what does it mean to you to be.
Speaker 5 (21:04):
Honored in that way?
Speaker 15 (21:05):
No, not you know, not yet, but you know some
of those those things are sometimes game day decisions by
by parents and grandparents.
Speaker 4 (21:13):
For me, it's an incredible honor.
Speaker 15 (21:14):
And I know it was something that was a little
bit of a lightning rod with our fan base, but
I felt like I was in a position anytime someone
of that culture honors me with giving me a lay,
it is humbling and it is a to know that
I am you know, loved and appreciated or thought highly
enough for them to take the time to do that,
(21:36):
I think is really really special and so I never
wanted to disrespect that.
Speaker 4 (21:40):
And that's why that was an important thing for me.
Speaker 5 (21:44):
In terms of team captains, do you expect that maybe
to be released soon or you guys rolling with the
usual team captain method.
Speaker 15 (21:52):
Or you know, yeah so so so I can tell
you right now for sure for this one, the first
group going out there will be Noah Trey and genesis
and then there'll be a player tend to be named
later they'll they'll be added to that group.
Speaker 8 (22:10):
David Coach just looking at Hawaii the offensive side toin
this receiver and ashlock you see every.
Speaker 15 (22:19):
Year, Well, you know, I think that they've done a
really good job, you know, in what they do. And
I know that's something that you know, Timmy's been working on,
you know, kind of you know, getting back to his
roots of more run and shoot, you know, kind of
thoughts in terms of what they want to do schematically.
But the receivers are explosive, you know what I mean.
And that scheme, you know, lends itself to that kind
(22:42):
of performance.
Speaker 4 (22:43):
And I think when you combine.
Speaker 15 (22:44):
That with how well their quarterbacks playing, how tough he is,
I think they become really difficult to defend a pretty.
Speaker 8 (22:50):
Good defensive man on the opposite side and get a
stone and that's kind of rolling with them. What's that
scheme like that fortune five and what type of problems.
Speaker 4 (23:00):
Present for you?
Speaker 15 (23:02):
Well, I think when you watch them play, they play
extremely hard. And I think that's something that is you know,
has kind of been historically true about about whole good
Hawaii teams. You know, the they've got good players in
the secondary. I talked about you know both there, you know,
both the corners, you know, the ones coming back from
an achilles. But he looks like a really good player
on film. And the safety to me is kind of
(23:23):
the you know, he's the straw that stirs a drink
for them a little bit. He's an emotional leader, he's
a he's a hitter, he's a tackler, and so you know,
when you combine that, looks like they've got some good leadership.
And then they had a couple of good transfers they
plugged in the defensive line.
Speaker 4 (23:37):
So you know, it's going to be a challenge for us.
Speaker 15 (23:38):
But I think when you're playing on this level, like
every team that you play presents challenges, right, So our
job is to find ways to minimize those or find
ways to you know, create the matchups that we need
for the opportunities we want to take advantage of, right,
And so not.
Speaker 5 (23:56):
Doing the injury reports yet until gets into big tik
like a know, is there anyone that.
Speaker 8 (24:01):
You don't intend on having available for this game, or
that it's maybe even ruled up for the season.
Speaker 15 (24:08):
For the season, that's a that's a really good question
for the season. I don't know who that would be
right now, you know. I think, uh, you know, a
couple of those guys are still recovering from from surgeries
that they had in the off season, you know. So Rhino,
(24:29):
you know, he is making his way back, but he's
not all the way back, you know. But I'm trying
to think if there's anybody for the season. I don't
think we have anybody for the season.
Speaker 4 (24:38):
Yet, you know.
Speaker 15 (24:39):
But I think that the reporting thing is going to
be good, you know. I think it's I think people
are gonna I think it'll give people some clarity. And
I know it's a big topic of conversation in the media,
you know, and then you know, then especially with the fans.
So I think I think it'll be a good thing
when we get into it. But in this space where
we don't have to get we're just we're not going to.
Speaker 4 (25:03):
Two questions.
Speaker 8 (25:05):
You guys have the camera obviously, other teams in the
conference have as that best played.
Speaker 4 (25:11):
For your opponents.
Speaker 17 (25:12):
Whatever is there any.
Speaker 6 (25:14):
Not only the specific year, but in jumble do you
think is there any sitting those guys down and discussing
calls or stuff like that, or is that stuff kind
of changed.
Speaker 15 (25:22):
Year over year, Like I think when that happens, because
it happens to all of us, you know what I mean,
where you have players that played for your program the
year before that go and you know, get paid more
money or take another opportunity somewhere else. So I think
everybody changes all their calls and all their stuff, you know,
as they go. And because rosters change over so much,
there's there's not a ton of carryover personnel wise a
(25:42):
year in and year out with who you're playing against.
I mean there's some, but but not a ton. So
I think you guys mentioned it last time I was here.
We were just looking at the the depth chart that
we put out, just how many new players or first
year players in the program or on the depth chart.
Speaker 4 (25:55):
So I think that changes, you know.
Speaker 15 (25:58):
And I think having been through this with players before,
like going and playing against the team that they played for,
I think the biggest thing for KD and for our
players is to just play good football and do their job,
you know what I mean, do their job. We don't
need anybody to be superman. We just need people to
do their job and do it with redline practice here.
Speaker 5 (26:18):
It's one of the wide range and things you guys
focus on.
Speaker 8 (26:22):
I assume it's a lot more Miro this week.
Speaker 4 (26:24):
How do you think the team has responded to the area.
Speaker 15 (26:27):
I think we've had a great week of practice, you know,
and I think as the game plan tightens up. Obviously
we still have to practice tonight, but I think as
the game plan tightens up and guys get really comfortable
and settle in, I'm excited to see practice tonight and
we're going to be in the stadium.
Speaker 4 (26:41):
I'm excited about that. I'm excited to be under the lights.
Speaker 15 (26:43):
I'm excited to be playing in the arena and the
surface that we're going to play on, you know, in
a couple of days, and so I think it's going
to be really beneficial for them.
Speaker 3 (26:53):
How would you compare the experience or the feeling you
had in the season open or last.
Speaker 7 (26:59):
Year compared to this year.
Speaker 4 (27:03):
That's a good question.
Speaker 15 (27:05):
I think, you know, I think in both situations, I
was really excited. Like I'm really excited. I think this
team we know the players better where we've spent more
time with them. We feel like they're our culture is
like more ingrained guys have a much better understanding of redline,
much better understanding of how what our expectations are for them.
And I think that part feels better, you know what
(27:28):
I mean. So I think it's it definitely feels, you know,
more more comfortable. We're more used to it, we know
how game day looks like, we know where we're going
to stay like like like kind of the the operation
of it obviously feels more comfortable. But I'm excited to
see our team play.
Speaker 8 (27:44):
Taking team at having a picture coach. You mentioned obviously
the celebration of Collegesian culture. Who is the best Probablysian
player that you be playing with and the best colaies
of players you've coached.
Speaker 4 (27:57):
That's a good question.
Speaker 15 (27:59):
I know the best Polonies player I've coached taking team
back out of the equation, and his name is Junior Fejoko,
and he was a defensive end at San Jose State.
He was an All Conference, he was the Mountain West
Player defensive player of the Year.
Speaker 4 (28:12):
He's a fourth round draft pick. He was unbelievable.
Speaker 15 (28:17):
The best Polian player that I played with, that's a
good question. I'm trying to think it was probably probably
a guy named guessing that I think it's sala Asaiah
who I played.
Speaker 4 (28:34):
With the U c L.
Speaker 15 (28:34):
A great guy, big, just huge mountain of a man,
big smile, big heart. He sadly passed away a couple
of years ago, but just a great human being played
he played.
Speaker 4 (28:49):
He played defensive line for US there.
Speaker 15 (28:51):
But then when he got to the NFL, they made
they made him an offensive lineman.
Speaker 4 (28:56):
So I think he's probably the best one I played with.
Speaker 15 (28:58):
Maybe him or Arnold Alais was older than me, so
I was only with him for a year, but he
was like a defensive end outside linebacker guy. He was
a badass, like he tried to rip your head off
on a scout team, you know. But yeah, so those
would be the two that come to mind quickly. That's
a great question, Thank you. There's a good memories for me.
(29:20):
Get my head ripped off by Arnold Alais as one
hundred and sixty five pound freshman in college.
Speaker 6 (29:27):
So every coach has their own kind of recipe to success.
Speaker 4 (29:30):
What was Dick Tony's recipe.
Speaker 16 (29:32):
In your opinion?
Speaker 4 (29:35):
Wow?
Speaker 15 (29:36):
God, that's a three hour conversation. There were so many
things about coach Tony. I think I think what coach
Tony did best is he really had an uncanny ability
to really kind of reach into every player's soul and
get the most out of them, Like he really had
a He was really fantastic at building connection. And I
thought his team's always played so hard, whether I was
(29:57):
playing against him or I was coaching for him, I
just thought that was always like something that he was
really really unique at. He was a guy that would
keep it simple and you know, his keys to victory
or probably just burned into every former you know, Wildcat
or Rainbow Warrior or San Jose State Spartan that ever
(30:17):
played for him. But I think that was really like
he was great at keeping it simple and getting the
best out of the people that played for him and
the people that worked for him.
Speaker 3 (30:30):
Between San Jose State in Hawaii, was it the Dick
Tony Bull or what was.
Speaker 15 (30:35):
Kind of the we played for the Dictmy trophy, which
was which was a really cool thing. It started our
second our second year there, and so it was a
trophy that traveled with the winner, that went back and forth,
and it was really it was really a special thing.
I think because of his history and and also those
teams being in the conference, you know, they played each
(30:55):
other every year, which was which was a great a
great part of it, you know. So it was so
the trophy was going to trade hands every year, you
know what I mean. With conference realignment and shuffling to
those conferences, now I don't think they play every year.
I think it's kind of so, which is too bad
because it was a cool thing.
Speaker 4 (31:14):
Right.
Speaker 15 (31:15):
Well, on that note, could you ever see opportunity to
do something like that between Arison and Hawaii?
Speaker 4 (31:21):
I think yeah, I think that's the problem.
Speaker 15 (31:24):
Is it, like schedules are done so far in advance,
you know, I think they come back on the schedule.
Speaker 4 (31:29):
I think we go out there in two years, is
that right? Twenty nine?
Speaker 15 (31:32):
Okay, so longer than that. So so I think that's
a little bit of the problem. Like I think, I
think those those trophies are cool and everyone has fun
with them, and I think they're neat things. And because
we had one also with Fresno, which was a cool thing. Obviously,
we have the one with here, we have the Territorial Cup,
which is awesome.
Speaker 4 (31:48):
So I think those things are fun.
Speaker 15 (31:50):
But I think I think they need to be in
conference for them to for the thing needs to change
hands every year, you know, or it needs to be
played for every year. It's a better way to say it.
Speaker 5 (32:02):
And what did it mean the first time that you
had won the Dick Tomy Trophy?
Speaker 15 (32:07):
It was special for me, you know. The first time
he played for it, we didn't We lost. We lost
in a forty two to forty game. There was not
a single punt, correct, Ben, have you ever been in
a game like that? Not a single punt? It was crazy?
And uh, it was the guy. So it was special
(32:29):
for me because like, coach was such a special.
Speaker 4 (32:31):
Guy to me.
Speaker 15 (32:32):
The cool part about it was when when coach Rolovich
was at Hawaii, coach Tomy was also special to him.
Coach Tony had also been impactful for Nick's life in
his coaching career because he was someone that talked and
when and when Nick became the head coach there, Coach
Tomy was still alive and and so he was someone
that you know, that he could lean on, so that
(32:53):
that made it special. And then but just the uh,
I think the the trophy was really cool and it
felt good because because we were able to get it and.
Speaker 4 (33:04):
Hold on to it for a while. Of course, you know,
and he saw it every day. You know, you're in
the facility. Pretty good to go. Okay, a lot of
stuff that pretend to Yeah, you know, they're running out
of stuff to write, man.
Speaker 5 (33:18):
But you know, here, here's the thing that I was
I was thinking about, is this conversation was going on
about Dick Tomy. We random out of town. He's like,
he's like a you know, revered in this town. Yet
our fans, our fans random out of town, and you know,
everybody says he got fired. He did not get fired.
He quit because he got sick of what was going
(33:39):
on here. Now he was probably gonna get fired, but
he got sick of of how he was being treated
the way this community just was so against him because
he didn't get to a Rose Bowl. And now all
of a sudden, we all love him. Rather, you guys
didn't love him when he was here. So many fans
that you know that I and I wanted I call
(34:02):
people out there, said oh he was and I'm like,
wait a minute, you hated him when he was here. Yeah,
so you shut the hell out. Oh you know, this
is Revision's history totally.
Speaker 2 (34:10):
People will say, well, well I wasn't the one, Yes,
you were collectively collectively they were because well they wanted more.
Speaker 4 (34:17):
They always wanted more. We have to sell it pub whatever. Yeah. No,
it's funny how they go back on the history of this.
Speaker 5 (34:24):
It pisses me off because there were so many fans
that he got to the point. I just remember listening
to his post game show that night and he just said,
I can't do this anymore two thousand. Yeah, yeah, I
can't do this anymore. And you know, it's it's it's
it was. It was wrecking his life and all the
all of a sudden, we've got his pictures up on
(34:45):
the you know, on the practice field, and we got
all these fans saying, you know, we need to get
more Diptomy type people here.
Speaker 4 (34:52):
You hated him when he was here.
Speaker 2 (34:55):
Jay, you still have hope people might like you later. No,
but you're right, exactly right. Uh, there's no other way
to explain it. Yeah, I mean there's there's no way.
I mean, because you're right. I mean, can't we just
go back to those days?
Speaker 15 (35:08):
Right?
Speaker 4 (35:09):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (35:09):
Yeah, they want to bring back the Dick Tomy days.
You know what you ended, the Dick Tony days. You
killed him five years ago. Yeah, you killed him.
Speaker 2 (35:18):
Yeah, and to his credit, he loved two soon enough
he came.
Speaker 4 (35:21):
Back and guess what you got.
Speaker 5 (35:22):
Since then you got John mcvic and and and Kevin
Sumlan in there.
Speaker 2 (35:28):
You know, in addition to people they who really hate
they hit Jed for what he did.
Speaker 5 (35:32):
Yeah, well, it just drives me nuts when I when
you know, when when people are saying how much they
loved him, you didn't love him when he was here?
Speaker 18 (35:39):
Yeah, kind of fits the fits the uh yeah, the
sequence of events here in Tucson. Okay, let's take a break,
come back and get your picts ready. I got to
make some calls.
Speaker 4 (35:50):
Whatever.

Fox Sports fourteen fifty I'm Steve Rivera and today is
Jacobs Aus and we got Ray handling the mike here.
If we're going to call, give us a quick call
five two o four one six seventy four forty. We're
gonna be talking about our picks here in the final
segments we get some time. So I'm nervous, Steve another,
what are you nervous about? You've been beaten before.
Speaker 5 (40:18):
Well, here's what I'm nervous about is that I'm nervous
about getting off to a bad start and then just
sucking all year long.
Speaker 4 (40:26):
Two.
Speaker 5 (40:27):
Let's hey, look, wait a minute, a little talk about
revision is history.
Speaker 4 (40:33):
We came down to the last game last year.
Speaker 5 (40:35):
If you recall, we're not talking a and you hit
you hit it and I missed it and you won
by a point and a half.
Speaker 4 (40:41):
I was talking more about the worst season you've ever had.
Speaker 5 (40:44):
That was awful that one year, two years ago, two
years ago, it was it was terrible.
Speaker 4 (40:50):
Yeah, you couldn't pick it. I know, I know, I
couldn't pick my nose. Don't do it.
Speaker 2 (40:55):
Now, it's a public forum, okay, so do you go first?
Speaker 4 (41:00):
To go first, let's explain.
Speaker 5 (41:03):
Okay, So, for those of you who haven't listened to
this over the last couple of years, I run this
football poll. It's a very large football pool, and Steve
and I are both in it, and we pick five
games against the spread every weekend. Uh, it's in all
college games this week, so it's all n Cuba games,
but once we get going, it's two college games, two
NFL games, and then the fifth game could be whatever
(41:24):
game we want. We have what's called the Pickskin Special,
which is a game that it's like the best game
of the weekend, so that we both have to pick
that and it's got extra point value on it, and
then we can lock a game to give an extra
point value. So but we're picking five games against the spreads.
So that's what we're doing today, and Steve and I
go against each other. We keep track of this all
season long, and the winner gets their entry fee paid
(41:47):
by the loser for.
Speaker 4 (41:48):
The next bowl. Right, and we and go week to week. Oh,
that's right.
Speaker 5 (41:53):
We go five dollars a week on this, so I
think last year, I think we broke.
Speaker 4 (42:01):
Let's go, let's take the call. Hello, you're on the
air and one on the ball. Who's this?
Speaker 23 (42:06):
That's Ricky Jay. Don't feel bad. My poker winnings are
a lot worse than your damn betty.
Speaker 4 (42:16):
You know I feel helpless sometimes money.
Speaker 23 (42:20):
Oh let me tell you. It's like you know, I'll
draw a beautiful plush and he'll get.
Speaker 4 (42:25):
A full volt. I would piss me off anyway.
Speaker 23 (42:29):
Oh, let me tell you. You have no idea, But
I just want to digress if I may, real quick.
I'm not a big gambler and listen to all you
guys talk about your gambling and everything else in sports betting.
But I I'm optimistic for coach Brennan. I think he
(42:50):
is going to be the key uh to this whole
season if he can keep his mindset focused and not
let the peripheral stuff for the fans and everything else
get in his way. I think he's going to have
a good season, and I think that fans of Arizona
will be pleasantly surprised when it's all said and done.
(43:15):
It's it's tough to be a new coach in any program,
but when you have a school that doesn't have the
financial whereabouts his Texas and the Ohio States, in the
Alabama all these other schools. I think he's going to
do a good job and I'm looking forward to a
great season.
Speaker 4 (43:33):
Yeah, yeah, thank you Rick for the call. Appreciate that. Yeah,
I appreciate it. Hey, I kind of agree.
Speaker 2 (43:38):
So yeah, I'll have a question. We have enough time
off that question.
Speaker 4 (43:42):
Thanks Rick.
Speaker 5 (43:43):
All right, let's get going. So since you won last year,
I'll go first and you can follow my picks. Okay,
So I'm taking this game tonight. I like I like
Georgia Tech giving the four and a half to Colorado.
I just think Colorado's got a lot of new guys.
Dion's got a lot of uncertainty, you know, coaching, not coaching.
Speaker 4 (44:01):
His kid anymore.
Speaker 5 (44:02):
They're gonna have a new quarterback, they don't have their
Heisman trophy.
Speaker 4 (44:06):
Guy, Georgia Tech is supposed to be good.
Speaker 5 (44:08):
There's a lot of people saying that, don't be surprised
if they you know, put on a you know, content
for the for the a SEC Championship. So I think
the four and a half is a little low number.
I know it's in Colorado, but I'm taking Georgia Tech
minus the four and a half.
Speaker 2 (44:21):
Okay, Okay, I'm gonna take Utah over U c l A.
It's on the road at U c l A. I
think uh Utah found itself in a bad situation last year,
and we'll find itself in a good situation this year.
Utah and their coach are pretty good. He's a pretty
good coach, I should say he's a very good the
(44:42):
new the new quarterback.
Speaker 4 (44:44):
Yeah, so I like Utah minus five and a half.
You're gonna hate this, you went to I'm taking Utah too.
This one my perfect week.
Speaker 5 (44:54):
That's how you smile. I wonder, I wonder what's well again?
You know, like I said, I and I listen to folks.
There's I've heard a number of people say that they
think Utah.
Speaker 4 (45:06):
Is gonna win the league.
Speaker 5 (45:07):
Yeah, they're going to be good, and and U c
l A just is not very good and they're not
going to be good in the Big ten.
Speaker 4 (45:14):
So yeah, I'm I'm on Utah as well.
Speaker 2 (45:16):
Okay, I'm gonna go Tennessee minus fourteen over Syracuse.
Speaker 4 (45:21):
Please don't say anything about this game. No, no, I
you know, I looked at it.
Speaker 5 (45:25):
I looked at it, but I I got I'm.
Speaker 4 (45:29):
Not gonna lie.
Speaker 5 (45:29):
I got spooked by those big points breads last night,
and I'm going in to stay away from them.
Speaker 2 (45:34):
I'm going in blind this week because you know, you
don't typically pick you NFL games over the college games,
and I'm just kind of going what I know, and
this is what I know, and I'm not keen on
any of it except for the beginning, except for the.
Speaker 5 (45:46):
Beginning the big game, which is we got to both
Picklehouse State Texas. So all right, you I just you know,
this isn't the game that Toya I hate, but I hate.
I don't like either of these teams. But I just
think Clemson is really really good. Yeah, yeah, I think
they're really really good. They got L s U. Yeah
(46:08):
that's giving they're giving three and a half. That's a
huge guy, you know, L s U. I just don't,
you know, trust those guys. And I think Brian Kelly's
not they don't like him at L s U. And
I think I think they're really I think he's just
going to have a bad year. And so I'm going
Clemson and they're giving three and a half to l
(46:29):
s U.
Speaker 2 (46:32):
Okay, that's a that's a big game right away. What
time is that at? Okay, Okay, we'll be at the
university by then. Okay, God, this is a tough one
for me, but I'm gonna do it. Utah State minus
six over UTEP. I think I'm gonna lock that game.
And I have no reason why. I just think that
(46:54):
Usty has a new coach. I think they do. Oh,
it's a new ki, it's a course, it's a coach
from from New Mexico.
Speaker 4 (46:59):
I think.
Speaker 2 (47:00):
Oh, let me think that again. Let me think that
I'm gonna go with them minus six over UTEP at home.
Speaker 5 (47:07):
All right, let me go back. I'm gonna lock the
Utah game. By the way, I'm gonna lock Utah and
you're locking Utah State. Yeah, okay, all right, Okay, this
is the game that I hate. I'm hating myself for
taking it. But you got some advice from But I
think I think it's a good pick and there's a
couple of things behind it.
Speaker 4 (47:26):
And I'm taking Miami Florida against Notre Dame.
Speaker 5 (47:30):
Yeah, I think I feel like Notre Dame is people
are all over Notre Dame because of what they did
last year and it's a new year. I think I
think the points spread would be different. You know, it's
in Miami. I just think that, you know, Miami's got
(47:50):
this quarterback, Carson back coming. I just think they're gonna
be really good.
Speaker 7 (47:53):
Do you like Carson?
Speaker 4 (47:54):
I do? I do? Well.
Speaker 5 (47:56):
I like them for Miami. Okay, I don't like Miami.
There's nothing about Miami that I like except that I
think they're they're they're getting they're getting points.
Speaker 4 (48:05):
It's two and a half.
Speaker 5 (48:07):
Basically, I think I do is win the game, and
and it's in Miami and Notre Dame is Look, those
guys lost to Northern Illinois at the start of the
season last year. So it's I think it's a smart pick,
even though I hate the pick.
Speaker 4 (48:22):
So I'm taking Miami Florida.
Speaker 2 (48:23):
Okay, so let me transition to that I don't It's
not that I don't like this pick, but I never
do this, at least on this show. Uh take you
of A, and I'm taking you of A to cover
the seventeen and a half. Man, I just feel that
when Hawaii is not gonna be any.
Speaker 4 (48:40):
Good, you guys go off draft king lines.
Speaker 5 (48:42):
No, yeh draft these are draft king lines, and they
were yesterday, so they lock we lock in the lines
on Thursday.
Speaker 4 (48:49):
So this is what the line was.
Speaker 2 (48:52):
I think it's just not that good, you Uba, with
its new offense or so.
Speaker 5 (48:57):
You know.
Speaker 2 (48:57):
So they say the new offense will score enough points
to win something like forty to seventeen.
Speaker 5 (49:04):
I'm thinking about throwing a little something on Arizona. Yeah,
you know, maybe ten, bous. I think this is one
of those games. Get a little hopes up. We'll play
well next week and then we'll see what. I kind
of disagree with Brian when he said if they win
by ten, that's fine.
Speaker 4 (49:15):
It's not.
Speaker 5 (49:16):
But yeah, I don always say for Brian who understands
the game, yes, for Joe Schmoe fan out there who
thinks Arizona should win by thirty every week, you know
they're going to be unhappy if it's a within a
couple of touchdowns. So and I think the number is
basically do they cover or not they covered?
Speaker 4 (49:36):
Then I think people will be happy.
Speaker 20 (49:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (49:37):
And I like to pick Steve.
Speaker 5 (49:39):
I do, I do, Okay, we both got to pick Texas, Ohio.
I have Georgia Tech, Clemson, Utah, and Miami. Okay, that's right,
all right? And I locked Utah and you locked Utah State. Yeah, okay.
So last pick Texas, Ohio steak. I've been all over
the board on this, back and forth and back and
forth and back and forth.
Speaker 4 (49:59):
Wait wait, wait what do you got? Who do I got? Yeah? Texas? Okay,
I got Texas. I got Texas. Okay.
Speaker 5 (50:07):
I just think they're going in with a quarterback that's
played he's got I just think Texas is going to
be better.
Speaker 4 (50:18):
I do.
Speaker 5 (50:19):
Ohio State has got a lot of new guys, including
a new quarterback, and I don't know. I was on
I was on Ohio State until about three o'clock yesterday afternoon,
and not that I heard anything. It's just all of
a sudden, I just kept thinking about it and kept thinking,
I'm taking Texas because I shouldn't.
Speaker 2 (50:37):
I'm taking taking Oho State because it's at home. Uh,
Texas loses this game, they'll still be in the hunt
from the national title. Given the quarterback, everybody's still going
to be loving Texas until the end, until they can't
play him or whatever. So Ohio State at home minus
one and a half minus one and half favorite.
Speaker 4 (50:58):
You mean it's be a huge game.
Speaker 5 (51:00):
The line they think flipped a couple of places, I
think where Texas is now favored by a point.
Speaker 4 (51:05):
Really, yeah, there's a couple of places. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (51:07):
And that was a part of it too, is that
the line kept moving toward Texas. And I'm like, there's
people a lot of people out there way smarter than me.
It's all that Texas men who are who are the
oil book who've decided Texas is the real.
Speaker 4 (51:21):
Money in that pond. I think, seriously, this is stupid.
Speaker 5 (51:25):
But just because all week long, I was thinking it
was Ohio State, and I thought, whatever I pick, I'm
going to get wrong.
Speaker 4 (51:31):
So because I was thinking Ohio State, they decided to
take tex We've gotta go.
Speaker 2 (51:34):
We gotta call, we gotta call call hoe? Was it
wet a minute? Nutt a quick call? Hello, you're on
the air.
Speaker 4 (51:40):
Yeah, quick quick prediction. Uh, I guess my better judtment.
I'm pulling for.
Speaker 24 (51:45):
Texas against Ohio State because five weeks from this weekend,
they Oklahoma Sooners are going to trailfle the home are
gonna just mantle Manning and.
Speaker 23 (51:55):
Just spell the minut of Manning.
Speaker 24 (51:57):
On our way to a race season, Richard, and then
of course I woke up. Anyway, it's a great here.
Speaker 4 (52:04):
It's great to hear from you, Richard. Appreciate it, Richard.
Speaker 2 (52:08):
Richard's making his own lush or something. Okay, we got
a couple of minutes, so that's what those are picks.
Let me go back to what Rick said about about Arizona.
I don't think you can be the Texas and the Ohio.
You're not them. No, you're not them. So they don't
even think about it, never.
Speaker 4 (52:27):
Never will be you.
Speaker 5 (52:29):
We are Arizona will always be the team that the
program that every couple of years or every few years
they'll have a good season and you know, maybe they'll
get into the playoffs or whatever. But they're never going
to be consistently that team just because for all the resources.
Speaker 2 (52:45):
But they never have been the nothing they enjoy in
my time with you thirty six years, I mean five
seasons of Yeah, it's.
Speaker 5 (52:52):
Not nothing's changed. I keep having this conversation with people.
All is going to kill Arizona. They're never gonna be
able to compete. Guys, the other teams have always had
more money and they still do.
Speaker 4 (53:04):
It's not changed. Arizona is exactly who Arizona is, and
even in this scheme of.
Speaker 5 (53:08):
Things, Yeah, no, it's and it's not gonna change what
it What could change is if they don't keep up
other teams that haven't been at Arizonas that will catch up.
But they're not ever going to be in the league
with Ohio State and Notre Dame, Michigan and Alabama never
have been, never will be.
Speaker 4 (53:28):
With that, we're gonna take it, were to take off.
Speaker 2 (53:29):
Thanks everybody, right, talk to you guys tomorrow for the
Hunley Huddle.
Speaker 4 (53:32):
Yeah,
