Want to take part in the show call out? Steve
now went five to two oh four one six seventy four.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Hey, welcome back to the ball hero Fox Sports Sports
teens fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. I just want to say this.
I appreciate the hell out of you, and we'll get
back to that in the second. Why don't you have
breaking news for us?
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Yes, sir, this is I on the ball, breaking news
on Fox Sports fourteen fifty.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Happy Tuesday to everyone out there. Here's truly Mitolindo. Goody
two shoes. Gonna start with some Arizona athletics.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (00:39):
You might have talked about this yesterday, but Ted Orna
McMillan and defensive back Randy Robbins have been selected to
the Arizona Football Ring of Honor.
Speaker 2 (00:48):
Yes, yes, before the season started. When did I started
beating you? Uh? After harassing you all last summer? I
think I thought that a team Eck would be the
best all time football player to ever.
Speaker 4 (00:59):
Plays drafted offensive area. I mean, he's you're looking at
him in camp right now. He's outshining the competition. He's
looking up to it. Just he just didn't have the opportunity.
If he's not the greatest, he's definitely the most popular.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
I think. I think he's up there with well you
grew up, you grew up, Ricky? How old you and
Ricky and them played Ricky. Yeah, that's in that timeframe,
so you were what eight ten? And could you remember
the craziness that they had to be crazy for.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
Yeah, deserts warm that area. Yeah, well that was way before.
But that's when it starts, Chuck. You know those guys.
I was gonna ask you this.
Speaker 3 (01:36):
We saw with Colorado Shador Travis Center, they get their
numbers were tired.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
Do you see that happening for McMillan at all? I
don't know. I think there's a requirement. Why are they
going into the Ring of Honor? Does that I asked
this Ray yesterday and I should know this, but I
don't know this. There's got to be some kind of
requirement to get in that. Oh, because he was a
consensed All American. Yeah, okay. What about Randy though? And
we've had him on the show, hoping to get him
(02:00):
this week because I think he's still the ad at
Cousin ground.
Speaker 3 (02:04):
But does it say All Conference back ten All Conference
mentioned honorable mention.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
It might have been the years in the NFL, because
you know he had nine years in the NFL definitely,
and then ten years in the NBA goes get.
Speaker 4 (02:17):
You in the ring of basketball. So there might be
some requirement for well, they're putting love in there too
because of the All American statute.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah, right right.
Speaker 3 (02:26):
I believe it's probably along the lines of fall American,
how many years you play with?
Speaker 4 (02:31):
You think when it's all said and done, tm MA
is going to be the greatest player to ever come
out of ve Is that what you just said?
Speaker 2 (02:38):
No? No, I said before the season started that he
would have that year where he could be considered the
best player, got it?
Speaker 4 (02:44):
I thought you said, And when it's all I thought
you say? You said one before the season. I thought
he was going to be the greatest player ever come
out before.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
Before last season, and he just didn't have the opportunity
because the situation obviously, and it was not his fault,
it was other people's. He would have been just circumstances right,
But he probably is, but he doesn't have the stats
to be yet.
Speaker 4 (03:03):
I mean, do you think right now even you do
you think he could top Gronk.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Well, see grunk get played it pretty much. It doesn't matter. Yeah,
it doesn't matter. But you have you have guys way
ahead of them. You have Ricky, Yeah, you have NFL
wise when it's all yeah, yeah, likely, but you had
you don't forget the Raddy Robbins guys and guys. But
you probably didn't even see but Bence, Johnson, Bruski.
Speaker 4 (03:30):
Yeah, for all their accolades, they're not better than Gronk
because he's a Hall of Famer, right, right, How many
Hall of famers have you produced in football?
Speaker 2 (03:39):
That's a question. I don't know.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
Yeah, so that's why that's why he's a question. Was
asking anyway, keep going.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
You have to catch your passing officially, you don't want to,
don't It's that's bad luck, that's bad you put that on.
I don't do that.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
March Madness Men's and Women's tournament will not be expanding
the season. There are still talks for the twenty twenty
seven you.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
Know what's gonna happen. I know, but it yeah, I know.
I hate saying that. I mean, I listen. I'm one
of the proponents of the expansion of baseball playoffs. I
think it's great. I love it. It's exciting. I loved how
they did it during COVID. I thought that was a
lot of fun. But it's sixty eight teams already, right, Yeah,
just leave it. M Yeah, I like where it' appen.
Speaker 2 (04:20):
It'll move to what seventy two, seventy six, whatever it is,
seventy two, and then they'll get guess what's gonna happen
in ten years, one.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
Hundred and sixty. Yeah, go ahead, everybody's in. Yeah, everybody
gets a trophy.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
To some local news in the MLB, the MBX beat
the Padres six to two, is part of their three
game win streak after losing six straight. They'll look for
to take the series. Uh tonight six forty.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
Yeah, they went on a fire sale at the straight
deadline and now they went three straight. Mike Cobies can't
win two games in a row. But yeah, they're still
up there. Right they're the second place to the Brewers
right now. They're a dumpster fire right now. I don't
really what's going on again, scorning Irons. They're boring to watch.
It's just all the things anyway. But yeah, the Diamondbacks,
I mean you get rid of Nailor and Suarez, your
(05:11):
two corner Cordstones and Marrill Kelly, and then two days
later you went.
Speaker 2 (05:15):
To three Street when they played who the Padres Padres?
I mean depending on the opponent too.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
I mean the Padres are second place, three games behind
the Dodgers.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Right, you're telling me talent doesn't mean anything. Yeah, you
know that is. It doesn't It's just how you play that. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
The separation of talent at that level, though, is not
always extreme.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Depending on your play. How many times did you pitch
and you beat this is a dumb question, and you
beat the other guy who maybe people thought was better
than you.
Speaker 4 (05:44):
Like, I mean I faced MVPs. I mean I faced
the best of the best, That's my point. How many
times did I beat them? And people were like, how
did you do this? Yes, I mean I'll give you
a story. I think I face I think Ryan Brown
I faced him twelve times. I think I struck him
out six and I think he hit six home runs
off me. So it's pretty go no, no, no, what I'm
talking about. Get you won that game when you faced
into the picture. You're facing into the picture that was
(06:06):
beat on the other side.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 4 (06:09):
I mean I never a couple of times, A couple
of times guys that were in the big leagues of
next year, you mean right, good dudes that you knew.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
That, God, this is gonna be a tough one. Yeah,
and then you weren't competing, yes, directly, but no you
still are yeah, yah, yeah, yeah, you still are.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
The San Antonio Spurs and Aaron Fox have agreed to
a four year, two hundred and twenty nine million dollar
maximum contract extension. This will keep him with the Spurs
through the twenty twenty nine twenty thirty butt.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
You five dollars one that he doesn't last that long
in that contract?
Speaker 3 (06:41):
Why it doesn't have the movement? Yeah, it's too much movement.
The movement of the NBA is constant.
Speaker 2 (06:47):
Yeah, and they'll find somebody better and then they'll find
somewhere to ship him.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
That is that's wild money, though, right, Like that's crazy?
Like is he going to be in the conversation for
MVP next year?
Speaker 2 (06:57):
No or U women? Yeah, probably will well.
Speaker 4 (07:00):
Obviously, but you're paying him fifty five million dollars a year,
fifty two million dollars a year.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
No wild?
Speaker 3 (07:07):
Do you say no, I'm sure I wouldn't. He's towards it,
somewhat towards the end of his career.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
He's past his prime. He likes prime.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
A year or two passes prime, let's say, let's call
it that. Yeah, so why are you You could get
a guy that's one year in the league or a
rookie in a rookie salary situation that's probably not producing
at the level that he is, but potentially or potentially
is going to be better than he is at this
point in the next four years.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Potential momentum.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
That's crazy money, though, Man, it is which way the
world is? I know, it's crazy money to me you
were born ten years too late.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
Yeah, or to true I'm sorry or either yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:47):
Yeah, get hold of your parents. Yeah they're listening. My
mom's at home with she's sick. So's wow, let's tell
my mind.
Speaker 2 (07:55):
Yeah your mom isn't my mom isn't my dad is? Okay?
Speaker 4 (07:59):
Yeah, shout out? Uh feel better, dad, do something with
your life.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
The NFL preseason starts this week Thursday. The Calls go
to the Ravens, Bengals go to the Eagles, Raiders go
to the Seahawks.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
So and so on. So oh yeah, blah blah blah
to me to ask you to go back to this
because you talked about your dad but don't even know
where I'm going with, but you kind of know where
I'm going with. So your dad, you love your dad,
You go games and watch watch. Yeah, this cubs my
guy that pulled you aside and ripped you ripped? Yeah,
was your dad similar to that or did he I'm
(08:34):
sure he loved you blah blah blah, but did he
do that every now and again? Because uh, if he didn't,
I'm assuming that that thing that happened over there and
he pulled yourself was tough or he said, yeah, my
dad did that to me all the time. This means
nothing to me.
Speaker 4 (08:49):
I mean, I maybe I think my mom ripped my
rip me and new one more than my dad did,
and that was scary. But that was you know, my
dad just ye, I don't think he maybe a handful
of times that he ever went that route. I just
knew that in my household there was a degree of
respect that both my parents wanted to have and that
they deserved it and cared about you to do cared
(09:11):
and they showed it in that ass that's the coaching
that we're talking about. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, like we
tell these stories all the time, Like I tell it
to my friends and I'm telling it on the air.
But like the things my mom did for me to
have the things I had at a young age is wild,
Like it's crazy, like moving money from different accounts just
so I could have Like that stuff is like that
(09:32):
that stays with you for the rest of your life.
And at some point you realize there's a very specific
moment in my life that I realized how important that was.
We were driving back from Casa Grande from the out
the malls and I had I spouted off and had
a fit or something, and my.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Mom age age laid in my yeah I was twelve
to thirteen, maybe laid into me.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
And from then on I was like, I didn't realize
the things that they did, or especially my mom. They
both did obviously sure to allow me to have the
life I did at that point. Right, No, that's perfect
because I think a lot of us have that experience. Yea, yeah, so,
but it was like, and to get to your point,
and I will be very clear with this answer. My
dad was a point. He was like he'll figure it out.
(10:15):
You will figure it out what you want. And if
somebody is gonna get into your ass like that and
do what they did, it's your job to either you're
going to react in a positive manner and negative manner.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
You're gonna figure it out. I thought you're gonna ask
something about like that. You're gonna start talking about NFL preass. No, no, no, no,
you know you have a lot of stuff we're going
to psychology around. Okay, So you you've had a few,
a few players or teammates that were pretty damn good, right,
how many of those group, let's say five, like you said,
(10:46):
would have not dealt with that pull over instant? You
know what, I don't need this crap. I'm not gonna
do it, and they their career.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
How many guys went on to play at a high
level for a long time that would have dealt with that?
Speaker 2 (10:58):
No, no, no, no, that didn't because of that. It's
just hell, that's a good question. I don't need this crap.
Somebody yelling, I mean, I'm just gonna give up sports.
I can honestly only think three. One was an eighteen
year old that was drafted really high. He wasn't no
but it was just like you didn't You never got
to see if he was a starter on I think he.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
Was stuck around. He got drafted real high. Yeah, and
then he came into our clubhouse with the Yankees and
they were like, see you later. He quit because he
couldn't handle it. We had a catcher that was like
a fourth round pick and he just hated baseball, just
hated baseball. And so he's just like what am I
doing here? So he had to give back like half
of his signing bonus was like six hundred thousand dollars.
(11:39):
And then maybe like two other kids, like you play
with some other guys that think they're better than what
they actually are. When they do meet adversity, they can't
deal with it. Right, But it's not that many, not
at that level.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
Either you got it or you don't. Yeah, And it's
a job, right. People don't understand that it is. It's
a job.
Speaker 5 (11:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Yeah, back to breaking news. Wait wait can we sorry?
Are we? Where are You're going to go back to
the preseason? Yeah? Okay, finish that.
Speaker 4 (12:04):
Then we'll have the conversation about the preseason, because I
want to delve into that a little bit.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
The Browns for their first preseason game, will be starting
shad Or Sanders. He was fourth in the depth chart
that they're going to start him started, just to see
what he has.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Just that's what preseasons for. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
Uh so we'll be able to see him in a
starting role, somewhat in the starting role along with Anthony Richardson,
who will start for the Colts. Okay, Teddy Bridgewater passes
physical and is signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after
his one year in coaching.
Speaker 4 (12:35):
So he was he went back to some of the team, right, Yeah,
he's forty one. How old is you know?
Speaker 2 (12:39):
He can thirty two? Sorry, came back? Sorry you can't her?
No folk, Sorry, what am I talking about?
Speaker 6 (12:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (12:46):
He's easy, a big guy too. Yeah. So let me
ask you what Bridgewater was somewhere else before he left
that team. I think it was Detroit or somewhere like Troit.
Like just this year they signed him and brought him back,
and then all of a sudden he's signing with Tampa Bay.
I mean, just happened. If it's it's a story, I
really don't give a crap about. But I'm talking about
So let's move on from this.
Speaker 3 (13:08):
The Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison has been suspended for
three games by the NFL for violating the league's substance
of abuse policy.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
Did they say what kind of substance? No? No, they
did not m.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
And then last day I got I know because Steve
Likes lists the forty most important players in college football
in twenty twenty five from the ESPN.
Speaker 2 (13:32):
I'll give you one guess from number one, UH Texas
quarterback arch Manning march Man.
Speaker 3 (13:37):
And after that, couldn't tell you Gunner Stockton, Georgia quarterback.
Couldn't tell you Ty Simpson, Alabama quarterback. I've made this
very aware of that.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
My feelings starts college sports the car Notre Dame Dunte
Moore from Oregon Julian saying, do we have to go
through the whole list? What's richard, which is what's title?
How many Big twelve players are on it?
Speaker 3 (14:02):
Let's do that the forty most important players in college football.
Speaker 2 (14:05):
And what makes them important? Just they can either be
really good for their team or attention wise contenders player
players on content. How many Big twelve players are on that?
Speaker 3 (14:17):
That's a good question. Within the top ten just top scoring. Yeah,
you see guys or basically see a big ten. Yeah,
I mean it's going to be a majority of those anyway. Okay,
NFL preseason, how do you view it?
Speaker 2 (14:32):
I don't.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
Yeah, one, you're younger, how do you view it? And
then there's a reason why I'm asking this question, like
do you watch preseason? Do you think it's necessary to do?
Speaker 2 (14:44):
Way to watch it? Like, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
If it's on, you'll watch it, saying, oh, the Cols
are going to play the Browns. Yeah, it's if it's on, Yeah, sure,
I'll watch it.
Speaker 4 (14:53):
What do you put in higher regard in back round
background NBA Summer League or NFL preseason games? What do
you put in higher regard NBA Summer League or NFL
preseason games? I'm the same way.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
I think very someone you're taking a little bit more
seriously from the players rather than preseason.
Speaker 4 (15:16):
Yeah, and it's it's guys that are trying to just
make one spot, like you don't have so I like, ye,
there's something to play for NFL preseason. As a fan,
you're just going I hope he doesn't get hurt. I
don't don't get hurt.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
I guarantee those teams are those spots were already filled out.
I mean, no question, they just had to form teams
to get them to get the place and show.
Speaker 4 (15:36):
We were talked about that with Corey Williams, right, So,
I mean, but so getting back to my point is
that you have breaking news today and one of those
breaking news pieces is Teddy Bridgewater coming back to play.
But is it coming back to play after coaching or
is it because it's Teddy Bridgewater because he's going to
be a backup quarterback.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
Right, or or just somebody that they needed to service
to play during this time and we'll be cut before
the season.
Speaker 4 (16:01):
But that's like us having a conversation about a long
reliever in baseball. How many times have you said, hey,
breaking news, long reliever for the Kansas City Royals. Nobody's
ever said that on air, right, But yet we find
ourselves talking about that today on the radio, and it's
just it's like, yeah, this makes sense. That would be
breaking news nowhere else in the world. Nobody else is
(16:23):
like who is it? Like who cares? You said I
need to get a better intern.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
Yeah no, no, no, I say we need to get better
breaking news.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
That has nothing to do with one I love in
the summer. Yeah, I'll trying here, I'm trying like I understand,
but this isn't you know what this is? This is
where I do somewhat come in handy. Yeah, the big
twelve players, there are four of them of top forty.
Speaker 2 (16:45):
Of the top forty, all quarterbacks.
Speaker 3 (16:48):
It'll be Avery Johnson Kansas State, Sam live At Arizona State,
Sawyer Robertson Baylor, and Josh Hoover TCU. I don't think
this is necessarily an order because you have four straight
quarterbacks going thirty three to thirty six.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
I think it's just forty of the most important. Okay,
quick question. We got to go running really late. But
spring training, so you're Victor says this to you. Okay,
we have summer, summer basketball, a preseason baseball, pre preseason football,
some spring training.
Speaker 4 (17:15):
I mean spring training one hundred percent. It's not even close.
I mean it's an event. You go, you enjoy yourself.
People look for it's in the sun. They don't do
that in football.
Speaker 2 (17:22):
I mean I don't do you Have you ever been
like I can't wait to go to a preseason game
for the Cardinals. Why I didn't do that for spring trip?
You didn't go to the spring training game very rarely,
and this is one of the dreams I had. I
wanted to cover that going up in baseball, so I didn't,
but I went to cover the Rangers in Dallas. I
hated every almost every moment. And you can hate. It's
a nine yeah. Well yeah, it's a nine hour day
(17:44):
and the players weren't fun. Yeah, but I'm not saying
covering it from Nobody has that insight of me and
like Chase, my confident, Let's go.

on the Ball with Steve Rivera on Fox Sports fourteen fifty.
Speaker 2 (22:17):
Hey, welcome back to I on the Ball here on
Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. I'm Steve Riverta. In today's is
Blake Eager? Now on the phone, we have Lance Jones,
the director of fundraising, and tell me more fundraising and
corporate sponsorships for the Beldrome. How are you Lance?
Speaker 12 (22:33):
Yes, oh fileman, how are you? I'm doing great? Touthon,
how are you? Let's talk cycling in velodrome in southern Arizona.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
Yeah, a new thing, a very popular thing, a very
much needed thing. I think your what's today? I guest? Whatever? Fifth?
You got about two? Three, four months? How many more months?
Speaker 9 (22:54):
Sure?
Speaker 12 (22:54):
We're gonna have a soft opening. What's the little background
on this beforehand. There's about thirty four some some odd
you know belgones in the world, about fourteen in the
United States. This particular belodrome is going to be the
third closest to the twenty eight Olympics in LA. Essentially,
this velodrome typically they're made of asphalt, concrete, or wood.
(23:18):
This is going to be the first belodrome in the
entire world that's coming to Tucson that's made out of aluminum.
So it's such a unique structure. It's gonna be the
first of its kind. We're already getting a lot of
national and international attention to this thing. The other two belgromees,
the other three velodromes, there's two in LA one in
San Diego. The particular one where they're having the Olympics
(23:41):
in twenty twenty eight is in Carson, California. They're actually
going to have to shut that one down in January
twenty six for renovations for the Olympics, and as a
result of that, we're going to get a lot of
the Olympic athletes coming out to train at our facility.
Speaker 2 (23:58):
Nice, let me ask the dumb question first, quite Tucson.
Speaker 12 (24:05):
The main reason why there's a world renowned architect by
the name of Peter Twn because it actually designs belodrome's.
You know, he's done quite a few all over the world.
He always wanted to do one out of aluminum. And
as everybody knows that lives in the Southwest and particularly
lives in Tucson, everybody's familiar with the grave Yary ships.
(24:27):
Our environment is conducive to you know, having an aluminum
structure out here that's not going to rust. They've already
done studies in terms of you know, the heat that's
going to be you know, dissipating off of this thing.
That's not going to be an issue. We just have
the ideal environment when we build this belodrum and have
the same complete it's basically going to make Tucson probably
one of the most complete cycling cities in the country.
(24:50):
We've already got great mountain biking, We've already got great
road biking with the old Tour and what have you.
We've got BMX tracks so you can have a pump
track now. So this is the last piece of the
puzzle to basically make tuthon the cycling Mecca.
Speaker 4 (25:05):
Yeah, so Lance, I just showed Steve the picture you
sent Bri and I I mean it what we toured
the side of it is about half complete. You've got
the structure up almost one hundred percent right now. I
know it's not fully complete, but the base structures up right.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
Correct.
Speaker 12 (25:19):
Yes, we'll have a soft opening, like I said, probably
late September, maybe early October. They're putting the floor down now.
As a matter of fact, you're just kind of building
up the Yeah, the process goes a little bit slower
when you start getting higher because this thing is going
to go up to about you know, thirty feet in
the air. It just takes a while because you know,
for Oshan regulation and what have we have to build
(25:39):
scalp laing and guys have to basically, you know, kind
of strap in so they don't fall, and we build
this thing correctly.
Speaker 4 (25:45):
And just so, I mean, because people are going to
have this conversation like everybody when we talk aluminum plus
one to two degrees more than concrete correct.
Speaker 12 (25:57):
Correct.
Speaker 2 (25:57):
Yeah, So the structure the main reason why go ahead, I.
Speaker 12 (26:02):
Was gonna say, the main reason why the way the
way those thing is designed, the heaps can dissipate off
the back. It's not going to be a shiny surface.
So we're gonna sand blasting entire thing, which is going
to help for the tracks of the thing. So it's
not gonna be slippery, You'll have traction.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
I mean, let me ask you. It's gonna be near
the Pima Pema Grounds, Pema ground, sure.
Speaker 12 (26:23):
Correct, So it's gonna be out of the Yeah, the
Pema County Fairgrounds, across the street from the NASCAR track.
It's at the the Musselman kart track, the muslim A
Track's been out there, got look at twenty plus five years.
That particular area is going to get a lot of
attention I think over the next year or so.
Speaker 2 (26:38):
The main reason why.
Speaker 12 (26:39):
I say that because that's basically it's about a mile
away from that new Amazon data center that may or
may not get built.
Speaker 2 (26:47):
And give me the square footage and how large this
place is going to be.
Speaker 12 (26:51):
Sure, So, typically vuldromes are anywhere from two fifty to
four one hundred and fifty feet. The Olympic size is
two fifty, so ours is gonna be a two hundred
meter track.
Speaker 4 (27:01):
It's giant like when you go out there and you
stand in the center because lance is a plan still
to have a grass infield and then be able to
do different events during the race and throughout the year.
Speaker 12 (27:14):
Yes, that's correct.
Speaker 6 (27:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (27:15):
On the infield itself, it's about two and two hundred
fifty meter track. There will be a grass infield. It
will be a little kind of warm up track. On
the inside of that, there's a tunnel to get down
into the actual center part of the track. We're planning
on having other events because it's such a large infield
type area, you know, almost maybe little concerts and different
(27:37):
types of things. One thing to keep in mind that
we've partnered with the Bail School District, so we're going
to be hosting a lot of kids programs. Hopefully we'll
be able to kind of garner a lot of interest
through various bike shops in town, different cycling organizations. We
want everybody to come out because this is basically going
to be a place if you want to ride a bike,
if you're into cycling, this will be a spot to
(27:58):
kind of come take a look and get an idea
what the whole Belidrum thing is about.
Speaker 2 (28:02):
Does the structure that it's uning to talk about a
little bit a few times now. The surface make you
go faster slower than.
Speaker 12 (28:09):
Normal, so and obviously hasn't been tested yet, but the
architect thinks because of this the surface, it may be
the fastest.
Speaker 2 (28:19):
Track in the world.
Speaker 12 (28:21):
We won't know if we start doing some test runs
and what have you. That'll probably be probably October sometime.
We've got a couple of local Arizona, locally grown Olympic
hopfuls that will be out at the track, a guy
by the name of Tony Boone, Sierra Vista born and bred.
He's a twenty twenty eight Olympic hopeful sprinter. He'll be
(28:42):
coming out. So we're gonna find out and if it is,
we're just gonna get that much more attention, not from
just you know, people in the United States, but from
around the world.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (28:52):
Yeah, Tony's son is hopefully going to make it and
he's great. I just talked to Tony today. On a
side note, Lands the city of Supers don't wants to meet,
so we'll get that set up. But let's go into
Lance a little bit. So I've known Lance for a
long time. Lance was at the Pima Foundation, Pima Community
College Foundation when I met him. Then he worked on
the World Baseball Classic for US Lance. Let's uh, let's
(29:15):
dive into your background. You ran track and field the
University of Arizona.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
Correct, I did.
Speaker 12 (29:20):
I was a two and a half sport athlete, so
I ran track.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
I did the high job.
Speaker 12 (29:26):
I was a manager on the football team, which you
guys were talking about a little bit earlier there, But
my time was with oh, geez, like Ronnie Ville was
the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (29:34):
Really yeah during that era. So I you were You're
not eighty eight eighty nine.
Speaker 12 (29:43):
That is correct? Yeah, right before George well actually George
melo Ula, Yes, there the last year I was there
when when I left, and I also go ahead, oh
yeah yeah. Also I was a walk on or a
semi walk on for the UFA basketball team at that time,
but I got cut. But argumentally that was probably one
of the best teams that the U of A has
(30:04):
had in decades. That was with Sean Elliott, the Steve Kerr.
Those guys build character. Kenny was just graduating, so was
Tom Tolbert.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
Yeah. Wow, yeah, I think we talked about this last
and I just didn't remember this because I covered the
I covered the eighty eight eighty nine ninety football teams.
He told me the last game they played that I
covered it was the Hawaii game where they got shut
out for the first time in forever. So you were
kind of in that area in that time.
Speaker 12 (30:32):
Yeah, it's in that era. I'm yeah, I have a
two songs guy, born and bred. Kids are fit sederations
been hour around for quite some time.
Speaker 2 (30:38):
So do you do you never left two?
Speaker 12 (30:41):
I never left Nope. After graduating from go ahead. After
graduated from college, I went to work for the vin
mayor back in those days. And after that I went
to work for a small internet company that kind of
took off and just kind of stayed.
Speaker 2 (30:53):
Yeah, so that all that kind of took off. What
was it, Well, he doesn't want to talk about it,
you can't. Well, yeah, all that I'm here to press.
Speaker 12 (31:02):
I was the number seventeen. I was the number seventeen
em ploy with America Online.
Speaker 2 (31:09):
Stevemail uses that email you got. Yeah, yeah, I'm surprised
that people still do have that. I do got a mail. So, uh,
let me to go along with the points. And I
asked before you came on, maybe last hour. We all
have dreams, right, And Blake has never left the local
area I have left. Well, I don't know why. You
say one left for like two a week at nine years. Yeah,
(31:30):
and I've been here a long time and you know
a lot of people love Just what what did you dream?
And why haven't you left?
Speaker 12 (31:37):
Ah? Well, the main reason why I did not leave
for our listeners out there too, thought, is a pretty
good place to raise kids if your family you're still here.
Speaker 2 (31:46):
Yeah.
Speaker 12 (31:47):
I was fortunate enough to have grandparents and parents. I
never had to pay for daycare for my kids that
kind of sa Yes, you know, aunts, uncles, cousins.
Speaker 10 (31:55):
Uh.
Speaker 12 (31:55):
You know, you get a lot of banks for your buck.
Speaker 13 (31:57):
Living in this community.
Speaker 12 (31:58):
Yes, so that's what I stayed. Had apple opportunities to
go and live in different places. But you know, the
wat Runner is run of things. Yeah, it was a
good thing kind of coming or staying here for the
most part, at least to raise the cads.
Speaker 2 (32:11):
Right. No, that is the answer, because you well, let
me get some advice from you. Because you're a former
U of a athlete. People probably knew you growing up
in high school playing this being a star as your
high school community one just got his degree and you
probably have these dreams of going beyond AOL or whatever.
Maybe that was the stuff back in the day. What
would you suggest to him just in terms of dreaming
(32:35):
or going after something because you were a former athlete.
Speaker 12 (32:39):
Yes, yeah, Well the one thing about dreaming, you know,
and I think I talked to Blake about this before.
If you're shooting to do something, you've got to set
a target. You know, if you basically aim for nothing,
you're going to hit it every single damn time. So
in terms of dreams, I put my dreams down on paper,
you know, try to make them becoming to fruition. You know,
I'll make them a specific target. It there's something I
(33:00):
want to develop, like a bell drobe for example, you know,
or a business venture or something like that. I basically
put a lot of this stuff down on paper, make
it my target, and shoot for it.
Speaker 6 (33:09):
You know.
Speaker 12 (33:10):
It's one thing, if you know, if you shoot for
the stars and you hit the moon sometimes that's okay.
Speaker 4 (33:15):
Yeah, that's really good advice. I've seen his dry His
dream collages are excellent. He's an artist, right lance.
Speaker 2 (33:22):
Those ones that.
Speaker 12 (33:25):
I do vision board he does.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
Yeah. No, And that's that's how it is. There's no
joke there. People should do with more vision. Yeah, no question.
So what's the what's the how can I say this
the outcome? What do you hope to what do you
guys hope to get from this? A lot of people
so you know, end of the day.
Speaker 12 (33:43):
Yeah, that's a great question. Actually, you know, with the
help of like with Blake and Fasta, uh, you know,
El Tour, Charlie Tuross is the director out there. We've
got a lot of funding that came from the Wall Foundation.
One thing coming in the future, and I'm just gonna
be real quick about a lot of this. Right before
the eld Tour. We've got a bunch of world renowned cyclists. Now,
(34:06):
you know, if you're not in the cycling, that's one thing.
But the people out here that are listening right now,
they're in cycling. We've got Bob Lowell, who basically has
been doing the Tour de France commentating for the last
couple of decades. We've got a couple Olympic athletes coming
out to do the grand opening for this thing. We've
got Bradley Wiggins. We've got a couple of like I said,
(34:27):
the homegrown galves, Chloe Diigart, Kayla Hankins, all kind of
there is on a known people. For the most part,
what we want to get out of this is just
world recognition. It's the first of its kind. I was
just out there a week ago kind of doing a
little tour and there were actually dignitaries from Taiwan coming
out to look at this thing. They were already gonna
(34:48):
kind of conner a way to kind of build one
of these things over there. So what we're hoping to
get out of this is just the recognition, not only
just the beligium, but for two start itself to something
like I said, Cycling Mecca. You know, we've got sixty
miles of you know, car free bike.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
Path around town.
Speaker 12 (35:06):
We've got all these different events, so you know, it's
just a good thing for Tucson in general. It's gonna
help with the local economy. The things could be about
a five million dollar project. So at the end of
the days, you know, through visit Tucson, we went to
Garter people come out, you know, spend money in Tucson,
kind of get a good fill for Tucson and just
(35:26):
to help build the community. Also through our kids programs too.
Speaker 2 (35:29):
I was just gonna mention that, So if are you
going to have like schools or or runs or out
how it's not gonna work.
Speaker 12 (35:37):
Sure, Yeah, we're We've already got some u c I
sanctioned coaches to kind of help us develop some kids programs.
We've already partnered with the Ville School District. We're hoping
to basically since it's the only bell drum in the.
Speaker 2 (35:52):
Entire state, we'll.
Speaker 12 (35:53):
Have people coming down from Phoenix. When I say people
coming down, youth groups in particular, and it won't be
just kind of Our programs won't be targeted just for Velodrome.
We're going to try to be inclusive of all kind
of I guess cycling platforms being mountain biking, road biking
BMX and when we've got two recent uh BMX Olympians
(36:15):
that we're going to kind of help out this Corbin Shira,
let me have another gal I'm forgetting your name right now,
but it was just in the past Summer Olympics. So
it's going to be an all inclusive thing. We want
everybody to come out that's interested in cycling, doesn't matter
if you're rich or poor, in between, what have you
want you to come out and hopefully we'll have something
(36:36):
for you.
Speaker 2 (36:37):
So we'll have you back before you decide to do
the self opening or the real opening in but ninety
days I think probably yes, roughly, yeah, okay, that's the goal.
Well thank yeah, no, great, thanks, Thank you guys, appreciate
your time. We'll price you back back quest sometime soon.
Thank you. I'll talk to you tomorrow. Yeah. Good, luckily, Okay,
(36:58):
thank everybody. Thank you. Let's take bad Let's take a
break and come. If you're an Arizona men's basketball fan,

Speaker 2 (41:12):
Hey, welcome back to wy on the Ball here on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. You're Blake Heeger.
You have one with us, goes by fast and you
have a lot of fun. Today's been a lot of fun,
a lot of interesting stuff, local stuff. So you have
a big thing on Tuesday next week with the Chamber
of Southern Arizona. You'll be there, Blake. We'll see what
happens with a bunch of To me, that's interesting because
(41:33):
we talked about it all the time, all these great
organizations coming together.
Speaker 4 (41:37):
Velgrome needs to be there, Yeah, Veldrome needs to be there.
I mean there's some other organizations that need to be
there in our region too. I mean FC Barcelona is
up in Casa Grande right there. They're American Academy RSL.
Speaker 2 (41:52):
Have you heard any I guess you might the new
soccer field at the Greyhound Park? You know? Is that
RSL or is that dortmun It's one of one of those. Yeah, yeah,
So what's do you know what's going on with that?
I don't know. I'm not the person to ask there.
And then little Real Real so that that may or
may not happen. I mean, we haven't had horse racing
(42:14):
here in about three years. I mean, I listen, I
told you this before.
Speaker 4 (42:17):
The The stancea county is taking right now is they
want horse racing to happen there. They do, they do, Yeah,
they just haven't found that. They haven't found the right
person to run it, to run it? Is it to
run it or to operator I should say operator, they
and not that they haven't found the right person. That's
not right. Uh, the right person hasn't come forward yet, right.
Speaker 2 (42:38):
So so there's potentially a possibility, I think so.
Speaker 4 (42:42):
Yeah, And I listen, You've got you've you've got three
race tracks in the state of Arizona that have to
divvy up certain dates, right the biggest one being Turf
Paradise in Phoenix that has kind of the monopoly on dates.
And I think Prescott and Tucson are both they had
they haven't ran the last season, if not last two seasons.
So if you can figure it out, there's dates to
(43:03):
be ran and had and compete on a national level.
Speaker 2 (43:06):
I didn't know that, what do you mean, I didn't
know that they couldn't run simultaneously.
Speaker 4 (43:10):
Yeah, there's only so many dates that they're allowed to
have because it's a state thing. I think it's more
from a betting standpoint than anything else. Don't quote me
on that though.
Speaker 2 (43:19):
I didn't know that. I didn't know that.
Speaker 4 (43:20):
I'm a horse racing guy, but yeah, you bet on
the ponies. I thought you were more into cock fighting
than anything else. Damn it.
Speaker 2 (43:31):
That go from Well, I was gonna stay dog racing,
but that doesn't exist. No, No, back in the day,
you know, Jay loved that stuff. When you hear what
he talked about that how you got hooked on stings
and he was a little kid going to the dog races.
Speaker 4 (43:44):
No, I've never been to a dog I just I
mean there's so much animal crew. Yeah that I have
a tough time with it. And it's been forever since
they've been gone.
Speaker 2 (43:54):
But I remember that they used to have big parties,
media parties for there was when there was no comparable. Yeh,
that's what I'm huning. Yeah, that was so long ago.
It was fun, I mean because we grandstanding that grandstand.
But the clubhouse, Yeah, it was kind of a nice
little venue, right, it was.
Speaker 4 (44:13):
I used to be kind of cute before too a
long time ago. So are you not going to go
to the event on Tuesday?
Speaker 2 (44:19):
I can't. I don't think so I might tuesdays are
I meet with the guys. So yeah, I don't know,
but it's almost hard for me not to go. For
what we talk about mingling introducing your stuff to people,
and I know them all, but you don't have them
out at one Morgan's More.
Speaker 4 (44:35):
Yeah, you it's it was wild. I was having a
conversation with Tommy Lloyd. I turned around and had a
conversation with the Da Barnes. No, it was the same place,
and then I'm having you know, I've got John Peerlman
and Bob Hoffman and the Backtock and baseball.
Speaker 2 (44:50):
I might have to go. I mean, honestly, it's a
it's a they've done just to kind of for you
to get You should just do your show there, do
a remote show at General Penn's that day. The stuff
you come up with. You know, that's not a bad idea,
it's not, but it's not. It's not just that they
just have those people show up early and they can
be your guest. It's just not me doing this because
(45:11):
I have to have people taking the equipment and handling
the equipment. Yeah, it's just it's more than just me.
But that's a great idea. Let me look into that.
I like the idea and just kind of killed two
birds with one stone. Yeah yeah, five to seven good idea. Yeah,
think about it.
Speaker 4 (45:30):
Yeah, I'll set up I'll set up the interviews and
stuff and have people go out there.
Speaker 2 (45:33):
Yeah you'll be there, you'll be the communicator. Yeah, yeah,
we'll see. Okay, all right, we'll may be too soon,
but yeah, that's a good thing for you too, uh
Senor even after the you got a register, I might
do that. We might do that. Yeah, okay, yeah, let
me know. Yeah, and it's for anybody, right, general public,
if you just got the register.
Speaker 4 (45:52):
Yeah, how was the attendance last year? Could have been better? Well,
because people don't know. People don't know, and that's not
a knock on people. That's not knock the event. I also,
like we talked about a little bit, I just once
the word gets out and once you have four or
five years under your belt.
Speaker 2 (46:07):
Yeah, true, you know, true. This is not more just
so all these entities can get together and mingle and bs. Right,
this is you want people to be involved and say
you know, you.
Speaker 4 (46:17):
Want the community to be involved, right, we need to
shout it from the mountaintop that we've got these things
and we want them to stay.
Speaker 2 (46:23):
We want to be a part of it. How much
this is a dumb question because I know the answer.
The summer's here. It's one hundred and thirteen to day
one hundred and twelve, And how can you have something
that's going to be an outdoors thing like the tourtos.
You know, forever I went every now and again, I
covered them and I never really thought of the heat
until now. And it's just like, how do you guys
(46:45):
survive and go to games? And no wonder they only
showed up in the hundreds because it's brutal to sit
through a game that's one hundred and ten.
Speaker 4 (46:53):
You know, the Totros drew pretty well at head Corbett.
Sidewinders did not draw well. I don't know what the
answer there is. Again, there's other cities that have the
same heat, and well to the point of Albuquerque. Just
to put apples to apples, the isotopes draw very well.
And I know there's not much to do in Albuqurique,
but there's not much to do in Tucson. And the
(47:13):
climate is totally different. Yeah, because it's not similar.
Speaker 2 (47:17):
But it's ninety two and a different hot, but it's tolerable. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (47:21):
I also just don't remember, and I know they were.
I don't remember summer's being this hot. I don't weren't.
Like I go out today and I go I literally
have no interest in living in Tucson right now.
Speaker 2 (47:32):
You're not because of the seat, It's not I think
we talked about this, right, I'm older, and I don't
know why. It's because I'm older, Yeah, and I know
so now I fully understand why snowbirds moved when they retire,
because if this, if this is what it feels like
with heat, I can't even imagine when it. I've spent
some bad winters in places, right, but as I get older,
(47:54):
I don't leave the house. I'm sadly though, sadly, and
you've been in the cold for a lot. Which would
you rather have? I'd rather deal with this.
Speaker 4 (48:04):
I would rather deal with the heat than cold on
a consistent basis.
Speaker 2 (48:08):
Yeah, I mean, if you dealt with snow. Yes, I
grew Santa Fez on the eight thousand feet Yeah, but
I mean you're shoveling snow. My dad didn't make me
do that thing. I mean brutal.
Speaker 4 (48:18):
That's brutal, of course, And you got to do that
every day, and then you're going to go to work.
Speaker 2 (48:24):
I would be I would be, I would I would
not have a job. I don't know. I would. I
would shovel and be like, I'm going back inside. This
is it? Somebody, I just I'm done for the day.
I don't. You're out an event. Who was the last
time you're on an event and you were just miserable
because you were so damn cold. It happens, oh kind
of frequently. I know, it just happens. There's no fun.
(48:44):
I mean because air conditioning not not one hundred thirteen
it's fun. But I could you know you can deal
with it. Yeah, yeah, listen, here's the problem that I have.
Uh I think more so with a heat. If it
stays under a hundred one hundred to and under, I'm good,
Like I'm fine because the night's cool off. The mornings
are fine. You can wake up early.
Speaker 4 (49:05):
It gets to that one o eight, one twelve, the
mornings are miserable. You turn on your cold water in
the house, it's boiling hot.
Speaker 2 (49:11):
Like I don't know what, what's happening? Why?
Speaker 4 (49:14):
Why is this happening? But I will say the worst
place I think is Phoenix in the summer because it's
one hundred and fifteen to one hundred and eighteen, and
at ten o'clock at night it's still one hundred and
forty three.
Speaker 2 (49:25):
There's no reprieve. I've told you that story before. How
t I saw. I'm from Stanape, obviously, yeah, and I
was gonna enroll. It was one issue and we went there, enrolled,
got all my stuff together. It has happened about in
July of nineteen eighty two, and what do I know.
I don't know any better. I'm just small kid from
over here going to issue. And that's when the banks
(49:47):
had their temperatures in their time temperature and over there,
and it was like ten o'clock and it hid one
hundred and ten, one hundred and nine, and I'm thinking
that clock's broken. That's not physically possible. It's not physically possible.
Move here. Yeah, it's yeah, it's wild. So yeah, I don't.
Speaker 4 (50:05):
I mean, to get back to your point, I'd much
rather to have to deal with the heat on a
day and day out than deal with snow every single day.
Speaker 2 (50:12):
Yeah, because you go to games and you even you're
warmed up and you have gloves and you have all
that and you're still I love I love visiting or
taking Uhi. I don't ski for that reason that We
tried to go on a ski trip to New Hampshire
the Northeast a couple of years ago, and three out
of four of us got COVID, so we just did
a road trip and watched movies the whole time. It
(50:33):
was a great trip, but I didn't have to ski,
so that was perfect. But I like visiting and taking
trips and vacation to snow and cold weather and being
there for like a four to five days and then
be getting the hell out and it is very pretty
and all that, Yeah, until you re see real snow
and then it's just murky and dark and then it
(50:55):
rots your car and sorry, Yeah, snowbirds are there for
you know, our listeners are probably pretty excited about us
talking about the weather like this. I can't give it
to them.
Speaker 5 (51:06):
All we did.
Speaker 2 (51:07):
Yeah, yeah, two hours, two hours of good stuff. You
almost have to leave. Yeah, Okay, what do you guys got?
What do you what do you talk about the rest
of the week. Tomorrow nothing, I think what's his name
is kind of coming tomorrow, Troy's coming in. Were talking
about you wait, football. We couldn't get ready for that. Thursday, Thursday,
I'm not sure what's going to happen. And then Friday
(51:28):
we have Tim Tim from TMC coming in runner Tim.
Oh okay, yeah, if you have you have You've had
Opdy on, right, I've had him on. But that's when
he became a part of the PMA, County and Sports
call fame.
Speaker 12 (51:41):
Ye.
Speaker 4 (51:41):
Yeah, good to bring him on more. Yeah, he's good people.
You gotta find him. You gotta find him.
Speaker 2 (51:46):
I just textext him if you want tom on tomorrow. Yeah.
So what we got You have a football opens twenty thirty,
the thirtieth, right, Ruddy Robins tomorrow.
Speaker 3 (52:00):
Yeah, it'd be good. You guys do a prediction. Yeah,
seven thirty on TNT. That's the first game. So you
play on T and T the first game Tea Hawaii,
August seven thirty.
Speaker 2 (52:13):
That's up Saturday, Y goturday. So we've gone seven and five,
six and six, yeah, six and six worse, seven and
five maybe best? Yeah, I think welcome to Arizona. I
think seven and five. I think they're gonna turn around.
Speaker 4 (52:27):
I think I think Britan's I think you recognize some
of the mistakes that were made in year one, no
question has tried to answer them and espectly possible.
Speaker 2 (52:34):
Yeah, so we'll see what happens. Okay, I said eight
and four. I've stuck with it. Yeah, I don't know
what drink makes you're drinking. You said eight and four.
I just don't think the Big twelve is a good
that I'm gonna say this. It's gonna stand about. I
don't think it's a great football conference, is it. It's
not masketable? No, no, obviously not. We're not comparing the two.
But is it a great football conference? It's unpredictable. It's
(52:57):
where do you put it? Fourth or fifth? So is
there only four left? Because there's four? I mean you
got Pack twelve coming back next year this year? Right, Okay,
So you have the SEC, Big two, Big ten, Big twelve,
and who is the other one? Yeah, so it's three
or four? It's three in my in my eyes? Who
would up let me ask you this question?
Speaker 4 (53:18):
Is there is there a national championship competitor this year
in the Big twelve and there might be because a
su nobody had that computer.
Speaker 2 (53:25):
But do you think look at the Big twelve this
year and go, there's at least two playoff bound teams.
I think I'll go eight and four with you one.
Stick it to the man over here. I think there's
I think there's one. Obviously there's gonna be one. But
don't hurt me. He's gonna put his gold watch on. Yes,
we gotta go. Thanks, Thanks, Blake is always thanks. You
(53:46):
one guy, You guys,
