Speaker 1 (00:23):
This is I on the Ball Breaking News on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty.
Speaker 2 (00:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Lovely Friday, feel good Friday. Looking forward to the weekend,
not to the heat. Starting off with some local stuff,
Fox auguess is not super local. Fox announced that since
Jimmy Johnson's retiring, Gronk is going to be filling his
spot in the studio.
Speaker 4 (00:44):
So that's gonna be the you know.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
The Fox grew expect goofiness.
Speaker 4 (00:50):
Yeah, yeah, without a doubt. I mean, let me tell
you this.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
So he made a ton of money being the America
on tight end haul guy. Yep, I'm sure he didn't
go to journalism at uve A. Another dude's taking jobs
away from you guys, because that's you know, you know,
the business and media business. If you could just put
that goofy and presentable, you might have a job in
(01:16):
the TV.
Speaker 5 (01:17):
And went a few Super Bowls.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, well that helps.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
It was funny.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
It kind of reminds me of when we were talking
yesterday with Ricky and Lamont, like the guys who never
take like the jerseys off. Kind of he feels like
one of those guys in a good way and a
good way.
Speaker 4 (01:31):
Feels like one of those guys.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Right right, and and he's he's one of those guys
in a personable goofy and things happened to guys like that. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:41):
Yeah, keeping it going though.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Tyler Loop had his pre season debut yesterday, missed a
forty six yard attempt, but came back later and hit
a fifty two yarder.
Speaker 4 (01:51):
Also had to tackle, So.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yeah, he's a tough dude. Yeah, I mean, were you
here when we had him on?
Speaker 4 (01:58):
No, I don't think so. No, I think I don't
think so. Actually, might have been.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
Kind of bad news that came last night from the
Fever and Mercury game.
Speaker 4 (02:14):
Ariy McDonald is gonna be missing.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
The rest of the season with a broken bone in
her right foot, suffered in.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
The fourth quarter. Yeah, she was doing so well too, right.
They never played with they did they play together at
least once.
Speaker 3 (02:30):
I don't think so, because yeah, because I think she
was always like the fill in for her, So yeah,
I don't.
Speaker 4 (02:36):
I don't think they ever got to play.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Moving on to baseball though, Diamondbacks starting a series against
the Rockies as first pitch is supposed to be have
six forty.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
So expect football numbers the Rockies.
Speaker 4 (02:54):
Yeah, it's here, you know.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
Didn't like Colorado give like forty three runs in the
last time.
Speaker 4 (02:58):
I think it was like forty five. I have forty three.
Yeah to the blue Jays three games.
Speaker 5 (03:02):
Yeah, the blue Jays are pretty good right now?
Speaker 2 (03:05):
Yeah, well, or the Rockies. Two things can be true,
right right.
Speaker 5 (03:11):
There's a few Rockies fans still in town right from.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
There's no there's no more Rocky fans at all.
Speaker 5 (03:18):
There's gotta be one guy in Colorado.
Speaker 4 (03:23):
Ohio is well.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Ohio regulators are weighing a ban on first pitch wagers
and other prop bets because of the.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
I would do that. I would do that tomorrow. Yeah,
that's that's crazy.
Speaker 5 (03:36):
It's just it's.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
Enough of the day, enough of that it's too easy
to cheat. Yeah, yeah, very much, so I will do
I'm sure. I know this is a family program and
we have you know people who listen and they're talking
about the crypto and the and the and the crazy
stuff being thrown on the courts I don't even know where,
(03:57):
and they're betting on that stuff.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
Yeah, mixed it.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
What the hell? No wonder they're doing it.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
Yeah, it's pretty gross.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Uh well, yeah, I think like it's something like a
report came out that it was like there was more
future bets on like that kind of bed on those
kind of bets than like the actual.
Speaker 5 (04:10):
Like yeah, just get rid of them.
Speaker 6 (04:12):
I mean, it's it's it's you know, people are taking
advantage of it and and they're they're they're sort of
hyping it up. But then there's athletes that are you
know that are you know those prop bets.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Yeah, it's crazy. It's it's crazy at the time we
live in, and I know that every time we live
in is crazy. But nowadays, political sports, all these things
that happened, and you're thinking, what am I doing? What
am I doing here? Could you put me in in?
Uh those bubble bubble wraps? I could get.
Speaker 4 (04:41):
Hurt the white padded rooms.
Speaker 5 (04:45):
If you referee football games, you might have to wear that.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Yeah, some of your ear plugged.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
Almost skipped over this one, but t mac is also
supposed to make his preseason debut tonight or should be
kicking off soon against the Browns.
Speaker 4 (05:01):
Is gonna be also should be making nice his preseason
debut in that one.
Speaker 3 (05:06):
So got some I wouldn't say meaningful football, but you
know you got some interest, maybe some interest here in Tucson.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
This one came out yesterday, but I wanted to talk
about it.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
So Texas Tech signed the five star edge La Damien
Geiton from Georgia picked well, he's from Savannah, but he
picked Georgia over like Tennessee, Georgia, Florida State, like all
the SEC schools, And I don't know, man, it's kind
of just like, like I know a lot of the
good teams by their teams, but it's just like, it's
(05:38):
interesting to see it coming from the Big Twelve because
I don't think it was like that too much last year.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
No, it's it's Texas Tech. Of any team that they
bought a lot of things. They bought the best team
in the Big Twelve or one of the best football
wives and softball. What happened there.
Speaker 6 (05:54):
It feels like they're trying to buy the best team
in Texas. To me, they're competing for athletes and prestige
and that in the Sucause team in Austin arch Manning,
let's go, they're bleeding oil.
Speaker 4 (06:04):
Yeah, what color?
Speaker 2 (06:06):
What blood? Is that? It's dark?
Speaker 4 (06:11):
This one came out today.
Speaker 3 (06:13):
Patriots unveiled a Tom Brady statue actual Lett Stadium.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
I like that.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
I heard that twelve feet tall?
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Really?
Speaker 7 (06:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (06:20):
I think it's because he wears number twelve.
Speaker 8 (06:21):
Right.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
Oh really yeah, you're joking now, okay again Tim has jokes.
Speaker 6 (06:31):
No, no, no, I heard it was twelve feet tall,
and I thought that you know that TV twelve, right,
it's got to be twelve feet tall.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
Yeah, I guess again.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
Sounds good to one of the bigger stories that came
out of the preseason last night.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
I don't know how much stock.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
I don't think you put really any stock in the preseason,
but Ashton genty had three carries for negative one yards.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
Oh yeah, welcome to the NFL.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
Yeah yeah, you know. It just has people speculating, but
there's a lot of Yeah, that's way too early.
Speaker 4 (07:03):
Plus you can't really blame him, you know, a lineman
like you going.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
On your first date and sis, I'm gonna marry that girl. Yeah,
it's all right, exactly.
Speaker 3 (07:13):
A big one that also came out yesterday was that
Chargers Shawn Slater raptured his teller attendant, so he's out
for the year.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
He was the what's the prognosis.
Speaker 5 (07:27):
I don't know if if if I'm giving prognosis, you
know you're hurt.
Speaker 6 (07:31):
If you see me at the hospital, you know, doing search,
you just turn around and walk right now. I'm like
the communications and marketing guys, So if I'm in the
hospital doing anything medical.
Speaker 2 (07:42):
Go away.
Speaker 6 (07:44):
Although I've had a few need that so I could
tell you that's a bad one. That is not a
good thing to have.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Yeah, Anthony richards actually got Richardson got hurt yesterday.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
I shocked.
Speaker 4 (07:56):
Did you see his finger?
Speaker 3 (07:58):
It was dislocated as pinky turned his pinky was giving directions.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
Come on, that's a badge of honor for those guys.
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Right, It's like where you're going over there to the
beach over there. But he is supposed to be back
by next Saturday. Yeah, that's that's the fingers and stuff
I heard too.
Speaker 4 (08:22):
I saw it one time. It was It's kind of funny.
We were playing.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
We were playing in high school and one of my
friends his finger he was alignment, his finger got caught
in someone's jersey and it just like it turned.
Speaker 4 (08:32):
And oh man, he came off, came off right and
holding his head. He was like, coach, coach, one of
those things you.
Speaker 7 (08:39):
Got to do.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
That was kind of funny.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
It was it was It was just because it was
my friend. It didn't happen to you exactly. Cowboys guard
Rob Jones out for the season as well after breaking
a bone in his neck.
Speaker 4 (08:54):
Man, that's wild. Uh onto, you know.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
A bit happier news, the Celtics signed Joe Missoula to
a multi year extension.
Speaker 4 (09:06):
So that's uh. Coach, Yes, coming.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Off his third season as the Celtics head coach and
obviously won them their eighteenth title. Moving on to the Pirates,
even though I don't know, I like following Paul Skins
just because it's like, you know, the Pirates aren't great,
but he's a good guy.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
I didn't realize he's seven and eight. He's not having
a great win loss season, he's not.
Speaker 3 (09:31):
Having a great win last season, but he's having a
great year himself.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
He's having a great life.
Speaker 4 (09:35):
He's dating, yeah, and he has like a one point
nine like e R.
Speaker 5 (09:39):
Isn't he batting too? Is he batting?
Speaker 4 (09:41):
No?
Speaker 5 (09:41):
No, No, I think I thought I heard that he
was a good hitter at one point.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
It might have been.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
I think like in the in the minors, he might
have he might have hit a couple of dingers.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
But yeah, he Uh, this is crazy.
Speaker 3 (09:54):
Uh he allowed seven hits, which is considered, well it's
not considered. It's his worst in his career. But I
mean to allow of seven hits, that's you know, it's
not crazy. And they still they still shut shut the
reds out. So pretty interesting stuff. That's all I got
for this, right news.
Speaker 2 (10:14):

This is me, Good afternoon. How the heck are you today?
Speaker 15 (15:33):
Fantastic?
Speaker 2 (15:33):
How are you fine? Thank you?
Speaker 14 (15:35):
Are you?
Speaker 2 (15:37):
Uh? Are you already in town because you have a
big camp this weekend?
Speaker 4 (15:39):
Right?
Speaker 15 (15:41):
Yes, I will be in town tomorrow. I'm actually getting
ready to start packing.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
Okay, So tell us what you're up to before we
get into the camp stuff and what you're what you're
doing in the future. What are you doing now?
Speaker 15 (15:53):
Camp?
Speaker 2 (15:53):
Yeah? In light?
Speaker 5 (15:54):
Yeah, just in life, in life, what's going on? In
your word?
Speaker 15 (15:59):
I'm working for sports Agency, so out here in Kansas City.
I work remote though.
Speaker 16 (16:03):
So okay, just here in Kansas City.
Speaker 15 (16:05):
Living with my sister, being around some family.
Speaker 5 (16:08):
And where do you live, kyk? It's very important from
which so are you mo there?
Speaker 13 (16:17):
Mo?
Speaker 5 (16:19):
Well, we can still talk to. It's all right. I'm
from which talb.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
Okay, So that's not a bad gig. I think some
of the last thing memories everybody who knows of you
here at Yuba and the women's basketball team. Besides that,
you were always finding things to do right here with
a sid office or whatever I can do to help
that was you.
Speaker 15 (16:40):
Yes, I try and keep my hands busy, that's for sure.
That's why I love doing the camps and coming back
all the fun stuff.
Speaker 2 (16:48):
Is that how you ended up? So what's your what's
your duty now? With the agency?
Speaker 15 (16:54):
So I do client servicing. So I work under an
agent and all his client or not all of them,
but some of them I help with just kind of
marketing deals. I fly out and visit them and their families,
just making sure that they feel valued.
Speaker 6 (17:07):
What What kind of clients are you working with? That's
very cool? That is cool.
Speaker 5 (17:10):
What kind of clients are you working.
Speaker 15 (17:12):
With all the way. It's so we only do men's
basketball that I do, but all the way from high
school to NBA. So it's it's a lot of fun.
Speaker 6 (17:23):
So you are repping high school athletes with your agent.
I guess il opportunities.
Speaker 15 (17:28):
Or something yep, hmm, and I l now that it's
the thing. Legally, I should.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
Say, what a different world right we live in? Did
were you in the cusp of the nil or did
you have at least one year of it?
Speaker 15 (17:40):
I had one year, my super senior year.
Speaker 2 (17:42):
I got it, you super senior COVID year. How how
how life would have changed or changed a little for you?
Speaker 15 (17:50):
Oh? I know, I know it would have been amazing.
I wish I could have all five years with it.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
Yeah, no question. We had Ricky Henley on yesterday with
his brother Lamont. I know you you know them fairly well,
I'm sure.
Speaker 14 (18:00):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (18:01):
And Ricky was saying if I was playing now he
googled it and all that five million dollars million, he's
only forty years. Yeah, he's only right.
Speaker 16 (18:13):
Just need some eligibility again, right, I think you might
have a semester left.
Speaker 5 (18:16):
He could come back.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
Let's go right right now?
Speaker 11 (18:19):
Do you watch that?
Speaker 2 (18:20):
I guess does this keep your juices flowing to be
a competitor doing what you're doing now because you never
lose that?
Speaker 15 (18:28):
Yes, No, it definitely helps the competitive side, which it's
been nice to get a little of a break. But
I'm like all right, I'm ready to get back, you know,
sure into the action, and you know, I feel like
I want something. So it's definitely nice to have these,
you know, parents and everyone just being able to relate
and cheer for a team.
Speaker 2 (18:45):
Sure, what a great gig, you know, out of college,
you're doing this. What were your ambitions coming out of
college yet? Although you did play for the in the
w NBA for a while.
Speaker 15 (18:56):
Yeah, So I thought I was going to be a
coach or I wanted to be a coach, and then
I learned all the rules and how everybody was with
an IL and I was like, oh, maybe I don't
want to deal with all that as a coach. So
kind of just waited a couple of months. It was
right after I stopped playing. I was like do I
want to keep playing or do I want to work?
And this opportunity was there for me, so I was like,
I think this is a sign that I need to
take this job.
Speaker 2 (19:17):
Yeah, what if I tested an opportunity?
Speaker 6 (19:19):
What a way to you know, keep your hand in
the game and and then and things like that. So
where would this take you? I mean, what's your what's
your aspirations? Before we start talking about the campus stuff,
as you want to be an agent yourself or what's
where does this take you?
Speaker 15 (19:32):
You know, I don't think I thought that far yet.
I definitely don't.
Speaker 16 (19:35):
Want to be an agent, I know that for sure,
but I.
Speaker 15 (19:39):
Do like just this role of it in client servicing.
So I guess just get more clients. I have a
small interest in coaching. We'll see how far. But I'm
training girls out here in Kansas City too, so just
trying to get my finger in a bunch of to
see what I like.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
I think that you learned early that the world we
live in is a people world. Would you have to
be a people person because that's kind of who you are? Right.
You're a big fan favorite here. You worked, like I said,
anything you of a people needed. You were there to
help football, basketball, whatever. Where did that begin from you?
It had to be your family, your parents, Yeah, I.
Speaker 15 (20:16):
Would definitely say my parents, and growing up with three
other siblings, you always had to say you're pleasing, thank you.
And my parents just taught us to be good people
because they always knew that basketball was going to end
at some point, so we needed something to rely on,
and even if it wasn't a job, opportunity. At least
people could say, or would hope we would say we
were good people.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
Right, No, and that's fair. I think we can all
agree to that. As you look back and it's not
too far ago or long ago at your career, how
do you look back at it?
Speaker 16 (20:48):
Oh, I'm so grateful for it.
Speaker 15 (20:50):
I always tell myself, if I could go back and
do it all again, I would, and I'd probably do
it the exact same way too. I'm just grateful for
all the highs.
Speaker 16 (20:58):
And the lows and the learning lessons.
Speaker 6 (21:02):
So I'm a big believer in looking back in the
lessons that we learned. We didn't know that we learned
until we get a little bit past them. What's one
thing that you learned about yourself where you learned about
you know, life in general coming out of the program
that you didn't know or you weren't aware of coming in.
Speaker 15 (21:19):
Yeah, kind of like we were talking about earlier. I
just think how important it is to be a good
person and just show respect to everyone. I mean, coming in,
I was not really speaking to anyone, didn't ever think
I would be doing any internships or leadership roles. And
then just having time with Ada and the team and
them all believing me. I was able to do sell
(21:41):
many things, be a captain, fly to DC to talk
about NIL, have a Nike internship, just things I never
would have pictured in a million years. So really just being.
Speaker 16 (21:50):
A good person and seizing all the opportunities.
Speaker 2 (21:53):
And then all of a sudden do youa leaves and
the new coach comes in and they asked you to
be part of the search. I think part of the
church is that correct was what was your input or
the role?
Speaker 15 (22:06):
Yeah, Desiree was kind enough to reach out to me,
and she honestly just checked in on me, making sure
I was okay, letting me know, you know, Arizona still
loves us or loves me, and she asked if I
would like to help pick the next coach because she
knows how important the program is to me. And I
was super honored to be able to have that opportunity
because she didn't even have.
Speaker 12 (22:26):
To do that.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
M And I don't know what you can divulge about it,
but Coach Burke was probably among the top ones right
away or how did that come about?
Speaker 15 (22:40):
Zoom interviews and just getting off the Zoom interview with her,
I just felt like, yeah, that was a coach that
I would run through a wall for, and just as
a recruit, that's someone you want.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
To play for.
Speaker 15 (22:51):
So it was definitely awesome to get to have in
her that experience with her the first time, just once
speaking with her.
Speaker 2 (22:59):
Yeah, we had her on two three weeks ago. And
I think that's fair to say exactly what you said
that she's inspiring or very motivating, And you're right, you
kind of want once you get off the conversation with
her that you're saying, where do I sign up?
Speaker 15 (23:13):
Exactly exactly, She's awesome. I'm excited to watch this year.
Speaker 6 (23:18):
Yeah, so I'm looking I'm thinking about this camp that
you have coming up. What keeps you excited about that
coming back to Tucson? What are you looking forward to
the most when you get here?
Speaker 15 (23:29):
Well, obviously, I just love coming back seeing old faces, fans,
you know, close close people that are basically like family.
But honestly, just with the whole camp seeing and that's
why we added the high school group this year, was
just seeing kids. I mean I have pictures with kids
that were here when they were six and now are
watching me play. They weren't even old enough and now
(23:49):
here they are starting their high school season or starting
AAU basketball So just being able to see the growth
and watching everyone, it's just it's truly inspiring.
Speaker 2 (23:59):
Well, these are the girls that know who you are,
you know, because you know the young ones probably don't,
maybe they do, but the like you said, the freshman
in high school, the sophomores or whatever you were, that's
kind of their little wheelhouse of going to what you play.
Speaker 15 (24:14):
Yeah, exactly. So it's just awesome to see that and
know that, you know, they still they still are asking
me for tips and advice on going into their high
school season. So it's really awesome.
Speaker 5 (24:26):
So these high school kids.
Speaker 6 (24:28):
Has the game changed, you know with nil and as
kids come through are they Are these kids more savvy?
Speaker 5 (24:33):
Are they? What are they?
Speaker 6 (24:34):
Are they trying to prepare themselves differently for their college career?
Speaker 5 (24:37):
What kind of questions are they asking you?
Speaker 15 (24:40):
We're going to get a financial advice because they're making
a lot of money very much. Yeah, it's definitely more
like doggy dog like everyone is. I mean, the level
of competition has just grown immensely and you know, everyone
wants to go to the best high school now, they
want to play for the best coach. And getting the
best tournament. So it's really I mean, it's really competitive
(25:03):
out there, and it's fun to watch now that I'm
on the outside and I can see the game growing.
But yeah, I just love the attention to that's going
towards women's basketball as well.
Speaker 5 (25:13):
Well.
Speaker 2 (25:13):
Remind me, please, your freshman year, What year was that?
When was the n i T.
Speaker 15 (25:19):
Nic was twenty eighteen? Twenty nineteen?
Speaker 2 (25:21):
Were you here? You were not here yet?
Speaker 17 (25:24):
I was?
Speaker 15 (25:24):
That was my sophomore year.
Speaker 2 (25:26):
Software year? Okay, God, you spend a while then, Okay.
Speaker 9 (25:29):
I know, I forgetting out there.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
Sorry, sorry about that. You know you want to get
where we're at. We're sixty early sixties. So I got
here in eighty seven, eighty seven, eighty eight. It was
June Olkowski the coach, and then Joan eventually came later,
and I'm thinking, Okay, they're okay, they're good. Joan had
them at a certain level. And then Adiya shows up
with you guys, and it takes off like, holy crap,
(25:52):
they're selling out the arena for the n T And
I'm thinking, never, never, in my wild imagination would that happen.
And then to just continue even in your even in
your mind, because when you were freshman the year before
or whatever, did you think possible.
Speaker 15 (26:09):
It's not a chance. And I had mentally accepted it.
I was like, just here to play my hardest, get
a college degree, and win some games. Never thought it
would be an IC championship actually making it to the
NCAA tournament until after about like halfway through that second year.
Then I was like, all right, we maybe we'll see
(26:30):
an NCAA tournament And here we are.
Speaker 2 (26:32):
Yeah, you're playing for the national title. What do you Yeah?
Speaker 6 (26:36):
What what changed in that time? Was it a was
it a motivation from the coach? Was it a mindset?
Did something happen? Can you look back on that moment
and say that was the moment that that's when it changed?
Speaker 15 (26:49):
Well, it was. It was hard off freshman year because
we had our transferred airy Dominie McBride tier starts like,
we had all of them practicing with us against us,
I should say, but it was still when they had
the transfer rule where you had to sit out. So
I think once they were allowed to play with US,
I felt a little bit better. But then you know,
it takes a couple of games till you actually start
(27:11):
clicking and you can see how good you are. So
once we hit I think it was like Pac twelve
play and we were actually winning back twelve games. I
was like, all right, like we can do something special here.
Speaker 2 (27:22):
Yeah, And then you had a special group, you know, yourself,
Arie and some of the other ones where you guys
just kept caught lighting in a bottle. What are your
impressions of Ari? Now, she just got hurt, as you
probably know, and she's back in the league.
Speaker 15 (27:37):
I did see the course in Phoenix too, when everyone's
out there.
Speaker 2 (27:41):
Yeah. Yeah, So how was it playing with her and
her being a teammate, maybe being a teammate for you,
because I think you guys were a perfect compliment for
each other.
Speaker 15 (27:50):
Oh yeah, it was awesome. I loved playing with Ari.
She was a great leader, a great point guard. I
mean she was someone where you just you needed a bucket,
you were there to you could trust her. You could
just give her the ball and she was good to go.
Speaker 16 (28:03):
But not only on that, but she.
Speaker 15 (28:05):
Also worked hard and she was also good at defense.
You know, a lot of the times you don't see
players that excel that much on offense and defense, but
she was always up there with me. Press in full court,
getting trapped and then turn it right around bringing the
ball back up. So it was honestly amazing to play
with her, and I'm so happy and proud of her
for everything that she's doing, and you know, once again
(28:25):
having to prove to everyone that she belongs on a
WNBA team and have a significant role.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
Before we go back to your camp, how was it
for you? And I guess we all saw how difficult
it is to watch or to make an NBA team,
having covered the NBA for a long time with me,
but for the WNBA, you you were up there and
then you eventually weren't up there. How difficult is now?
The rosters are kind of maybe going to get expanded
now with more teams, but can you talk about that?
(28:52):
How good you have to be?
Speaker 15 (28:55):
Yeah, it's I mean, there's what twelve roster spots twelve
teams and or I guess thirteen now, and I mean
just because of the budget, sometimes teams only keep ten
or eleven players, So it's I mean, it is tough,
and there's so many there's so much great talent coming
out of college each year, so that's why I'm just
grateful that they're making more teams because you see great
(29:18):
players like Aary herself, who you know, was on a
team last year, and then the new class comes in
and she doesn't make it this year, but you know,
lucky enough Indiana picked her up and then you just
see how great she is. So it's hard when you
have talent like that just sitting there, but there's just
no there's no team to put them on. So I'll
be happy when this expansion comes and we get all.
Speaker 2 (29:38):
These teams right, right, So let's go back to the
camp real quick. You're coming in tomorrow, so do you
have it for just Sunday or tall or night?
Speaker 15 (29:47):
Just Sunday? Three age groups?
Speaker 2 (29:49):
Three age groups at the JCC correct, yep, Okay, when
do you start and how long do you go? And
are there still openings?
Speaker 15 (29:59):
Yeah, so we were starting off with our youngest age
group at ten thirty. We'll go for about three hours
that's six to eight or six year olds to ten
year olds, and then we're going all the way till
seven at night with our high school groups. So yeah,
we're we're excited. There's still a few spots left. The
six to ten year olds are definitely filling up fast,
(30:20):
but we got some spots left, so anyone is welcome joined, We'll.
Speaker 16 (30:24):
Be happy there.
Speaker 15 (30:24):
I got Dominie coming back with me this year, so
super excited to just have a lot of fun and
obviously come back to two soon and see some familiar faces.
Speaker 2 (30:33):
How often do you come back, because, like I joked
with the Laman Brothers of the Honey Brothers yesterday, and
I don't even know if you drink or not, but
I'm sure that if you go on anywhere that you
don't have to pay for much.
Speaker 15 (30:48):
Well, I try to come back as much as I can.
I used to go. There was a time where everyone
thought I probably lived there.
Speaker 14 (30:53):
I was so annoying.
Speaker 1 (30:54):
I'm not all alumni that never leaves.
Speaker 15 (30:57):
Now that I've gotten more, you know, into my career
and a little bit more busy with travel, I try
to come back at least twice a year, so hopefully
I always want to save it for a season though,
so I can watch some games because those are always exciting.
But it's nice now that you know Big twelve, so
I get to see Kansas and Kansas.
Speaker 6 (31:17):
State, sure you get I love that part of the country.
So when you come to Tucson, what do you got
to outside the campus. There something you got to do
when you get here is or something you got to
eat a favorite.
Speaker 15 (31:28):
Oh, I got to always go to Baja Cafe. I'll
probably start there.
Speaker 16 (31:31):
Before the campus.
Speaker 8 (31:35):
Yeah, so there you go.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
You talked about it. I don't know if you maybe
did remember this or whatever already in just in the
less ten minutes. But you're doing what you're doing now
in the sports agency area. Do you find yourself maybe
possibly down the road trying to hook up with a coach,
to to be a coach assistant coach somewhere.
Speaker 15 (31:55):
Yeah, we'll see. I definitely have been just you know,
doing as much and learning as I can, just seeing about,
you know, the coaching world and how it is. I
do a little bit of training out here for some
middle school and high school girls in Kansas City, just
to stay in touch with basketball in my own sense
of coaching them. So we'll see. I definitely it always
(32:17):
is in the back of my head. So I think
it's just that, you know, that little itch that won't
go away. So maybe one day I'll have to I'll happen, try.
Speaker 6 (32:23):
It out, It'll happen the right spot, We'll find the
right person right right.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
No, question. So lastly, how do they how do people
you still have like twenty four hours for people to
join in, how do they find to get a be
to be part of the camp?
Speaker 15 (32:37):
Yeah, so if you go to the Tucson JCC dot org,
they have a sign up there. I also have it
posted all over my social media, so it'll be really easy.
There's the link attached in my bios it's just my name,
Sam Thomas. And then I've posted some flyers with a
QR code too. So okay, we're super excited to have
(32:58):
everyone out there.
Speaker 2 (32:59):
So let me ask you what's the weather like today
when you're at today?
Speaker 15 (33:03):
It's about eighty five any five embalm me or tell
me eighty five percent humidity too.
Speaker 5 (33:09):
I'm from Kansas, Missouri.
Speaker 15 (33:11):
It's about that.
Speaker 2 (33:12):
Okay, So you want that or you want one hundred
and eight today or one hundred and seven and you
know hot.
Speaker 15 (33:19):
Hap to be right now, I'm definitely saying the one
hundred and eight no humidity, but we'll see how I
feel tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
All right, we'll say the travels good.
Speaker 15 (33:27):
Luck here, Thank you so much, you well.

Speaker 6 (39:45):
So the slate of of of matches that night, what
is it? Is it all weight classes or is it
just a couple of premiere fights?
Speaker 5 (39:54):
What what's the what's the slate look like tomorrow?
Speaker 7 (39:58):
We have twenty nine bouts.
Speaker 5 (40:00):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 7 (40:03):
Yeah. Again they're not like they're not ten rounders, you know,
but they we We've got a lot of local kids
here that fight all the time, and we have you know,
they age from nine, nine, eight to eleven years old.
We have some open fighters eight eighteen. We got a
(40:25):
heavyweight fight which is a fight twenty eight Isaiah Marcus
out of Boxing Fitness University and Ramon Martin Red Nation Warriors.
So that's going to be a good one. And then
we have our kid of Alfa Padilla. He's one hundred
and forty seven pounder, they're going to be going three
(40:47):
round three three minute rounds. Mustafa Jamal out of New
Corner Boxing and Surprise Arizona.
Speaker 2 (40:57):
So what time does it start with Surprise for.
Speaker 7 (41:00):
The start the start, The doors open at twelve. The
first bout is gonna be about one one thirty and
we're gonna run between one and one to six pm.
Speaker 2 (41:11):
Oh okay, okay, So it's during the day, Okay, So
I'm going I'm gonna take you my guy Ray here,
So you have to believe our names at the door.
Speaker 7 (41:18):
Senor, it's no problem. And we we got it streaming too.
We gotta stream on it too, so that's not a problem.
You just come and see me. I'll be running around
all over you. Just call me or just you'll just
tell them get a hold of Roger and we'll get
you in.
Speaker 2 (41:33):
We'll put you in the VIP. Yes, yes, guys, these events, Roger,
I know you try to you, you and some of
the other guys try to put these on. Do you
think that eventually they'll be more consistent Back in the day,
you know, maybe ten years ago before COVID. Uh, you
guys used to put these on consistently.
Speaker 7 (41:51):
Yeah, what we did, we did almost twenty five twenty
shows at the Wildcat House, the old Wildcat House, and
used to call them it was the West Side you Center,
and we called it the Price of Glory. There was
a great movie out about a kid, It's called Price
of Glory Amateur boxing. How they went into pros and
(42:11):
it was based on the rent that HEAs out of
No Gallas, Arizona. That that's what that movie was based on.
And Joshua went as far as the Junior Olympics. He
went all the way up to the Uh he fought
in the Canadian Canada International Bout and won, and and
(42:32):
he the rent areas were pretty uh famous coming out
of No Galles, Arizona. I knew him quite a bit
and I still see him once in a while. But
you know, as we grow older, we grow apart. But
uh did a lot of fights with them.
Speaker 6 (42:51):
If there are twenty nine matches and you've got five hours,
are they are they three rounds? One round or how's
how are they formatted? Those early fights, Uh, those the first.
Speaker 7 (43:00):
They're they're all they're all three three h three round fights.
Uh they can be stopped because USA boxing is geared
for safety. If a kid gets Uh, takes a good punch,
they're gonna stop the fight. Look at the kid, give
him an eight count and then they'll continue about if
there's more. If he gets three eight counts in one round,
(43:22):
they'll stop the fight. Or if there's four eight counts
during that fight. During that, we don't even want to
call about but we call him bouts. We don't want
to call him fights because we don't want to. We
want to be on our own Olympic style boxing. That's
what this is. But those kids like from nine to
twelve thirteen, Uh, they're gonna go only go a minute
(43:42):
and a half, you know, up to fourteen years old,
and and then they go up for two minutes. So
if they're if they're starting out, they'll probably just go
minute and a half. But almost all the bouts here
are two minute rounds, eight minute and a half and
two minute round for exception, about one, two, three, four, five,
(44:02):
about six of them are three minute rounds. But when
they get the older guys, the older the older kids
that have been fighting for a while, they get real competitive.
So it's they're all competitive matches. It's Olympic style boxing.
And this is where it starts. Where they can try
to make it to the Olympics, you know, but they
(44:23):
have to be over sixteen or seventeen years old because
there's there's a Junior Olympic division that goes from eight
years old and they go all the way to sixteen
and then seventeen to all the way to forty. That
they can still compete to try to make it to
the Olympics, but they have to go through qualifiers, through
(44:44):
the national qualifiers and stuff, and then depending on how
many tournaments they go to, they get so many points.
They go on a point system and then that's how
the USA Boxing ranks the kids that are competing all
the time. And it's a good thing, and you know,
it's good for the kids, and they especially in Junior
Olympics if they if they make it on the team,
(45:06):
they could end up in Marquette, Michigan, or or Colorado
Springs and they would actually live there in dorms and
go to school and and and box, you know, and
and go to international tournaments and stuff like that, and
it's it's it's a great thing once they get up
to that level, the elite level.
Speaker 2 (45:26):
So so, Roger, you been are you from here originally?
Speaker 7 (45:31):
Yeah, I'm from I'm from Tucson.
Speaker 2 (45:33):
So so I've been here almost forty years. I've known
you a long time. Uh, Croncass has been here. De
la Hoya, De la Hoya and Sugar Ray had things here.
Do you think it in Tucson has been known for
being a boxing town. Can it return to something like that?

I hope so, man, because right now Tucson's starving for boxing,
and Tucson has the greatest boxing fans. And you know
you witnessed this Steve On these we had great fights
when we when Oscar de la Hoya or Golden Boy

great fights. And then I worked with John Chargon, a

were up and coming. Danny Garcia, they Stay Wilder fought twice.

He hears that about five or six fights at that time.
Really nice guy to meet, you know. He of course
he went on to be the world vyweight champion for
nine or ten years. You know, he's he's I think
he's at the end of his reign. I mean he's
not a champion no more, but he's at the end
of his career. But he's still trying to fight. So
(46:59):

a Volkswagen, and it gets hit by a Volkswagen and
