Speaker 1 (00:00):
Steve Rivera, He's got his Eye on the ball on
Tucson sports station Fox Sports fourteen fifty.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Hey, welcome back to the ball here on Fox Sports
fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera. Geor Troy Hutchison.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
You're one. Now you have breaking news.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
This is Eye on the Ball, breaking news on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty.
Speaker 4 (00:22):
Happy Monday to everyone out there. Here is truly Mihitolindo.
We're gonna strot off with Arizona Athletics. Arizona women's volleyball
finished the season on a back to back win streak.
They defeated West Virginia last Wednesday and then beat Cincinnati
on Senior Day three to one. And now they have
officially made their mark on the season with the NCAA
(00:43):
tournament bids. What's seed are they for that? Uh? I'm
not sure what seed. I just know they're in the
Stamford Palo Alto Palo Alto bracket. They'll be facing South
Dakota eight on Friday, and if they win, they'll play
the winner of Stanford and Utah Valley.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
It was a fun year. Yeah, it was. I mean this,
how can I say this?
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Back in September September early October. You're thinking this could
be a good year, bad year for the program, right,
And now all of a sudden, these teams are done
very well in the spring, and you know next semester
is going to be just as good with softball and
baseball and all these other things. I know you'll be softball.
(01:33):
But you know the only team that really didn't do
well was probably soccer.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
Yeah, as but that was expected. Yeah, maybe maybe even
then a little bit lower.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Yeah, So you thought this could happen in this semester
with all these teams, and kind of here we are.
So they're doing okay, basketball is kind of you don't.
You don't know what's gonna happen given the situation. But
so far, so good.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
Speaking of basketball, they are six and oho be cal
State Bakersfield seventy eight sixty three. They also beat it says,
we didn't have the show on Wednesday. Northern Colorado last Tuesday,
eighty four to fifty eight. Supposedly the best team they've
played up to this point in the season.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
Stack up those wins they twelve play. I think it's
gonna be a little bit of a tough awakening, because again,
you don't. You don't have those road games yet. So
your first game is at Utah on the road. Tough team,
that's tough. Sod was at home? Oh, it's at home.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
First first road game is Colorado on New Year's Eve.
Speaker 3 (02:34):
Which is a tough game too.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Yeah, player already defected, maybe two already, right, I think
two have defected, yeah, or some sort of situation for
whatever reason.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
Yeah, but in the Northern Colorado win Danaia Tremmel. I
believe I'm saying that right, twenty two points. In the
cal State baker S will to win Lonnie Cornfield with
twenty two as well. Okay, men's basketball stillundefeated, no surprise,
ninety eight sixty one over Norfolk Steak and they got
a big matchup with number twenty one Auburn coming to
(03:06):
Tucson eight o'clock ESPN where red I saw.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
I saw this over the weekend. Who was surprised to
be in my in my Facebook post? You know us
old people still do Facebook. And some woman was talking
about I just noticed that the home games aren't very good,
that all these big games are on the road, and
I says, I didn't respond because we talked about this times. Yeah,
thanks for the news, because it's not it's not a shock.
(03:32):
And obviously the big games are on the road or
a neutral court some more of like San Diego State
right in Phoenix, and then Alabama and Alabama and BURMANHAMU
and then this is probably the biggest game that's not
a big twelve game at home.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
Yeah. No, And it's gonna flip because next year you're
gonna have Yukon in Tucson. You're gonna have probably matchups
that they're gonna set out, you have the Maui Invitational. Yeah,
so things will flip around. But overall it's still great schedule.
Speaker 4 (04:01):
In the Northfolk State when Mo Crevas was when we
bound away from a double double posting twenty and nine.
Speaker 3 (04:08):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (04:08):
But big, bigger news I guess from that is Ivan Kartenkoff.
I did not finish the game nine minutes, went out
with a little bit of an ankle injury.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Yeah. I really didn't see what happened on the Yeah,
you next.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
To me, I saw it and it was like, okay,
you know, you fell step to whatever, yeah, and couldn't
get up again.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
Like ankles, Like I know personally, like my ankles are
weak where you know, you just twist it one way
walking or whatever. So it's a funny thing like sometimes
you don't do anything and just twists and then there
you go.
Speaker 4 (04:40):
I do it all the time. Yeah, unfortunately, but somehow
I still walking.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
Biggest news of the weekend for Arizona. They beat the
sun Devils in Temp. Nine and three.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
Then they've won three of the last five, the last four,
last four, which is nice.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
Yeah, if you're into that, you talking about issue. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
There were number twenty in the fALS football rankings. Now
they're twenty two right now, Arizona twenty two in the
eight people.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
And tomorrow we'll see where.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
Oh actually I don't I don't know if they do one,
do one before the final.
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Reveal, they'll no, it will be the final reveal.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
So Sunday will know where Arizona stands with with the
bowl game and with the final regular season ranking. But
no Fafida twenty eight for forty five, one touchdown, two
hundred and eighty six yards. Kendrick Reesno had the one
rushing touchdown towards the end to kind of steal the win,
but cam Barmore with the surprise touchdown that they no
(05:41):
beginning of the third quarter.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
And Stuke's with the best player of the day, Stukes
best player of the season.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
I don't know, I don't know. Yeah, yeah, the best
pick of the season. Yes, overall, I think his best
play was the Kansas one because they hit that post
pattern that's a touchdown. Kansas goes up, he makes up
ground is able to tip the ball away and pretty
much steal the game for Arizona. But I thought that
was the better play.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
The best player of the day that I saw personally
was the canvas hold on that pick six, because that
kind of say, scored the touchdown.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
That gets game gets ugly.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
Yeah, but Dalton Johnson was rewarded with his performance back
to back Big Twelve Defensive Player of the Week award.
Speaker 3 (06:26):
Big Game. Last game it was tackles, had eighteen tackles,
this one only three tackles. But interception force Fumble just
made his presence on the field and created chaos.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
And pretty much helped to shut down the issues receivers.
But they also got a little bit help with who
the quarterback was and their top receiver went down in
the game early. I'll be honest, as a fan watching it,
I didn't even notice that I knew he would have
gone out, but I thought he went back in.
Speaker 3 (06:56):
I don't think it would have made much of a difference.
And it's not that he's not a great player. He
is a great player, but just to sure dominance of
that game from Arizona.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
So in Arizona football recruiting news, they have flipped four
star offensive lineman Justin Morales from Kansas State. They also
got a commitment from junior college ed rusher Kevin Moror.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
So.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
Now they're the number thirty one ranked team in the
nation and the fourth overall best recruiting class in the
Big Twelve.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
That's coming Wednesday Wednesday, and you could see potentially more flips.
Obviously they're still working on trying to retain guys. During
this process, anything can happen. So in terms of five
star recruits, I think that's kind of out the window
for this year, but you never know. Maybe flip a
high three, low four.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Yeah that's Arizona, right, you followed it long enough, three four,
If they're good enough to be a four, yeah, yeah,
that's whatever one of the football it is.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
Looking at the pole projections from ESPN, it looks like
Arizona's headed to San Diego in the Holiday Bowls at Stadium.
Speaker 2 (07:58):
That'll be their second best choice Vegas in terms of fans.
But it's gonna be a good bowl game.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
Yeah. Who would have thought that? Come on, I okay,
I had them going to like a l A Bowl
or New Mexico Bowl. Son and Vibe basically. Yeah. So
this is tremendous. And again I want to see Arizona Miami.
I want that match up. If it is the Holiday Ball,
it will be an ACC matchup. Yeah. At first I
thought it was Big Ten. I forgot that they switched
(08:24):
it over to a CEC.
Speaker 4 (08:25):
I know, I know a lot of my friends were
hoping for that Big ten school and for it to
be Washington.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
You know what, it could happened, but it's not going
to happen Arizona Washington in that alimible. Jed's last game
was in that Alimable for Arizona. But that they're not
gonna do that. Man.
Speaker 4 (08:41):
I believe that one is projected to be by U
and USC if b YU does not win the conference.
Speaker 3 (08:47):
I didn't realize this. USC has never played in that alimible. Wow,
So that's why the Alimable is really pushing for sc
good for the Trojans.
Speaker 4 (08:57):
Looking at uh the the new AP Top twenty five
and men's basketball, Arizona stays at number two. Michigan rises
all the way to number three, took away a couple
of first place votes from Arizona, but still behind the Cats.
Uh the number four, Yeah, but you still have h
four big tail, big twelve teams in the top ten. Yeah,
(09:20):
was Houston number eight, followed by b y U and
Iowa State.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Now State had a fantastic run too. Yeah. Uh with that,
with that running that to players players only, whatever it is.
I don't think Michigan's that great, But what's just me?
Is Gonzaga that good this year?
Speaker 2 (09:37):
I don't they They were, I think in the net
or whatever, they were pretty good. There were number one.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
I think before they get their butt keke it's early.
There was in the net. Yeah. And for me Michigan,
I think the theme for me is I saw them
play Wake Forest. They had to go into over time
ninety five ninety But it's early in the year and
all this is early in the year.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
Right, right, right, And what is exactly here in November?
I wouldn't gauge one game like Arizona the first half
of last week or any time when they beat Florida.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
Is Florida any good? Do we know? TC would be them.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
So there was the other one, the UCLA cost to
cal which so you know what I'm saying, it's just
it's early. You're playing well dot dot dot Yeah, and
here we are till March, till anything. I mean, you
could go, whatever you go. You're not measured until you
get through March. Yep, if you get through March.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
Looking at the college football coaching carousel, Kentucky dismissed its
football coach Mark Stoops after I believe thirteen years fourteen.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
He's used to be a former UBA assistant defense coordinator.
Speaker 4 (10:43):
Michigan State hired Pats Fitzgerald as their new head football coach,
previously at Northwestern.
Speaker 5 (10:49):
UH.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
UCLA hired James Madison's Bob Chesney. That's official. Okay, cool,
so Jed stayin. I can sound something over oh miss.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
Obviously with their big news, UH, they're sticking with defensive
coordinator Pete Golding and of course the lane train heads
to beat Rouge.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
Yeah, someone did someone You don't think he's gonna win
a title there. I don't think you will. I said that,
I think you will. I think you will. So ed
Ordron won one and then was out in two years.
I just don't think he'll be there on O Lane.
Given he won't be there a long time. You think
he's going to the NFL. No, they'll foil him. Oh no, no, god, yeah, yeah,
(11:33):
you're a feisty if they fired ed Ordron winning the
title and going nine and three and eight and four
the next couple of years, they're not going to do
the same thing.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
I want to bet you, but I forget I bet you,
so I don't want to bet you.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
Hey, you said he was going to Florida.
Speaker 4 (11:49):
No, no, we talked about the Florida. They hired two
Lane's John summer On.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
I would have bet the world on that. So you know,
what the hell does the world mean to me?
Speaker 3 (11:56):
And that's the guy I thought, l s you should
have hired John summer Off. So iNeST all that work?
Speaker 2 (12:01):
Well, why did I talked about that because I thought
he was going to floor. You thought he'd stay. I
thought he was going to stay, and you thought he
would stay. Yeah, so it is what it is. You're
not gonna win. You're not gonna miss. You know what
they call us experts, wrong experts. Let me tell you,
whoever's in this building, there's no such thing.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
Why aren't you going to win a tyro ole Miss?
He's just not gonna win the title there, You're just
not I think he could. You're not going to finish
out this season. They had a shot to win the
title this year. They had a shot. You know, Okay,
what was that line of dumb and dumber?
Speaker 6 (12:30):
No?
Speaker 3 (12:31):
But who? But who's the better? Like, who's the best
team in college football?
Speaker 7 (12:34):
They are?
Speaker 3 (12:35):
They are? They great? Michigan was their first tough test,
giving you this platform to talk, so go ahead. Michigan
was their first tough test since Texas. Before that, they
played a pile of crap. How good are they? They
haven't been tested. Michigan is not that great. Did you
think any chance in hell Michigan was going to win that? Okay?
(12:56):
And they proved that Indiana I think is legit. They
haven't played Indiana. Let's see what they do against Ohio
State in the Big Ten title game. They have they
have the athletes, sure, but they haven't been battle tested.
Ole Miss has gone through the gauntlet they have a
good offense coach, they have a good defense. I'm shocked
that they promoted the defensive ordinator dead coach. It's a
little shocking to me. But I think you could win
(13:16):
a title that. They have the nil they have the backing,
they have the boosters, they have the fan base. You're
in SC Why can't you win a title there? You
think you have a better shot at Texas A and
m oh yeah yeah, tested and m L s U
obviously Florida and Georgia. I'll give you Florida, No Florida.
(13:37):
He's a good coach. He's a good coach. I'm not
saying I would.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
I would put you through school the rest of the
rest of your career of school on this bet that
he would get And you're gonna you have to give
me some time, five years or whatever, but he is.
You couldn't reimburse before whatever that if you lost, so
he won't go there. A nice little speech there though,
(14:00):
for whatever it's worth. Let's see how it goes.
Speaker 3 (14:03):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (14:04):
One last coaching carousel's news. Oklahoma State hired Eric Morris
as their next head coach, coming from North Texas.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
Northern Texas, a lot of good things.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
A lot of strange good things are happening, and it
was a crazy news weekend with Lane he had he
had a no lose situation.
Speaker 3 (14:21):
Although did you see all the videos and blah blah
blah remind you of Yeah, Jed.
Speaker 4 (14:26):
Going back to his point, I thought Jedfish would have
had a better chance doing something here at Arizona than
here at Washington.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
Okay, I don't know. I think for Jeed, the thing is,
you go one more year, you get your Florida job,
and everybody knows you want the Florida job, and everyone's
okay with that, so it's okay with that. And I
think that was just short sightedness of Jed. Forlane Kiffin,
they're going to name the whole university after you. They're
not doing that at LSU. No, they're not doing that
At Florida. You're gonna be But is.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
This in the wind? And let me say this, would
you be? You guys are maybe crazy and you're not
so crazy. How what kind of a fan do you
have to be to go to the airport, yell at
the fence, yell at the coach. Isn't there more important
things to do in the South? He really think there.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
Is well people here, people hear what boers for him leaving.
They were at the airport. No, but you know what
I'm saying, they're crazy. They're really it's that important to
you to to bitch and complain about your head coach leaving,
to know the school honestly, the way they the way
they go, the way they did it. I could see
why the fan bases fellow Mississippi miss uh No Lane
(15:30):
Kiffin the way he did it and going about it.
And then Jed Okay, you knew Jed was that way,
So I will defend Jed never said he wasn't for sure.
Fifteen jobs in seventeen years, whatever the number. Was the
thing with Jed. It was the Twitter video of signing
the contract going through his house with the Arizona logo.
You didn't have to do that, no, of course, and
(15:52):
that that that was the thing with Jed. Okay, I
still see you guys have defense, yaling it'd be good.

Speaker 3 (21:04):
The Do the Star. How you doing?
Speaker 7 (21:05):
Just what's up? Guys? Good to hear from you.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Yep, long long season or no? Does winning help you
not make it a long season?
Speaker 7 (21:15):
Well?
Speaker 11 (21:16):
I mean, if we're being honest here. You know when
Brent Brennan said after the Territorial Cup last year and
he said it was absolute misery.
Speaker 7 (21:26):
I felt that and you know. What's what funny is
he even kind.
Speaker 11 (21:29):
Of brought it up during his press conference thing like
last week or two weeks ago, and he was just like, yeah,
it was misery heecor was missy for misery for you too,
And he pointed at me, and I was like, yeah, Brent, uh,
you're not lying, because you know, I remember, you know,
just kind of dealing with last year and dealing with
you know, the the Wildcats not fulfilling.
Speaker 7 (21:50):
Their expectations, right.
Speaker 11 (21:52):
You know, they went into the year with Big twelve
title hopes.
Speaker 7 (21:55):
And with that maybe even College Football.
Speaker 11 (21:58):
Playoff host with the expanded CFP, and certainly they did
not live up to that. And so when you when
you failed and you're dealing with so much stuff, yeah,
it was it was hell. It was hell for Arizona.
Certainly it was help for me covering the Wildcats last year.
You know, I always remain objective and I always remain fair,
(22:20):
you know, whatever, I'm doing the job. But winning certainly helps.
And this year, I would say it's definitely been more
of a fun ride than last year.
Speaker 7 (22:29):
And honestly, if I'm really you know, kind of comparing.
Speaker 11 (22:32):
Seasons, this season is a little bit what kind of
like that twenty twenty three run where you know, Jetfish
and company took Arizona to the Ala Mobile, had a
very successful year, became one of just four teams to
win ten games, and now this year's team they're.
Speaker 7 (22:47):
In position to do something similar. You know, they're they're
probably not going to go to the alim Mobile. I'll
be a.
Speaker 11 (22:52):
Little surprised that they do go to.
Speaker 7 (22:53):
The Alomobile, but they're going to go to a very.
Speaker 11 (22:55):
Prestigious bowl game and they have the opportunity to become
the fifteen in program history to win ten games, which
is truly remarkable when you think about where this team
was at just a year ago.
Speaker 3 (23:07):
Yeah, you know, you couldn't imagine a more stranger to
ten plus win teams in a three year span than
these couple of years of Arizona gets the bull game done.
But justin you know, did you since and I got
this sense at the beginning of the season a different
mentality out of Brennan and the coaching staff to start
the year than last year, because there's that moment in
the Big twelve Men of the Day press conference where
(23:30):
he said his famous quote, well we're not kissing ass anymore,
it's just coaching. And that seemed to set a tone
early in the year for them.
Speaker 11 (23:39):
Yeah, no doubt, And I think that Brian Brennan and
his staff they went through a learning process because when
they were brought in a year ago, it was such
a weird time because it was in January, so they
had already missed the first transferportal window. And they were
also playing defense when it comes to retaining players, right,
(24:01):
Usually when you're building something, you got to go out
and get the players. Well, the players are already there.
Speaker 7 (24:06):
They just had to make sure that they kept them.
Speaker 11 (24:08):
And so and this is you know, literally weeks after
Arizona won ten games, went to the album Mobile, won
that game, pulled off the upset over Oklahoma, and then
a couple of weeks later, Brent Brennan's over here trying
to convince an no Facida in tet Roe, McMillan and
to Carlo Davis all these other great players to stay
at Arizona And sorry, guys, I'm on university right now.
Speaker 7 (24:33):
I got a streetcar right next to me.
Speaker 11 (24:35):
But Brent Brennan had to preserve that magic that they
were able to have in twenty twenty three, and.
Speaker 7 (24:46):
You know, it's really hard to coach a player in
the spring when that person's in the transfer portal.
Speaker 11 (24:54):
And the big biggest example of that was to Caro.
Speaker 7 (24:56):
Davis, and you know, he had one foot in, one
foot out, and had his you know.
Speaker 11 (25:01):
Had his eyes elsewhere, but you know also wanted to
stay at Arizona.
Speaker 7 (25:06):
And you know, for Brent Brennan, what is he going to.
Speaker 11 (25:08):
Do, say one bad thing and then all of a sudden,
Takary Davis is gone?
Speaker 7 (25:12):
And how would that look from an outsider's perspective?
Speaker 11 (25:16):
Right when you see that Brent Brennan and the staff
they coach a player like Takari Davis and after just
a couple of weeks he's like, you know what, screw this,
I'm out of here. That would be such a bad
look for Brent and his staff. And what they tried to.
Speaker 7 (25:28):
Do was, like he said, like they were just an
ass a little bit trying to do whatever they could
to keep the players there.
Speaker 11 (25:35):
And Brent, I think, was just at a point where
he's like, we're not doing this again. If you want
to be here at the U of A that you
want to be here, We're not going to do whatever
we can to kiss your ass and make you feel like,
you know, you are a part of this program and
you're going to feel that no matter what. And so
that's why guys like Tradon Stukes, Delton Johnson, No Fafida
(25:56):
Jennessis Smith, they all know how this staff operates, and
they chose to come back here.
Speaker 3 (26:01):
Again.
Speaker 11 (26:01):
The players that they brought in from the transfer portal
and the recruiting class, you know, they brought in sixty newcomers.
Speaker 7 (26:08):
Those guys chose to come to the u of A.
Speaker 11 (26:12):
And so really, when you look at the roster from
top to bottom, you know, some guys were.
Speaker 7 (26:16):
Recruited by the Jetfish staff, hecks.
Speaker 11 (26:19):
Some guys were recruited by the Kevin Summons staff, like
Trenton Stukes and Dalton Johnson. Which is crazy to think
that that, you know, they're the last of a of
a dying reid of the Sumblin era guys.
Speaker 7 (26:29):
But you know, those guys.
Speaker 11 (26:30):
All chose to come back to Arizona because they love
this staff and they love what they're building here. And
I think it's very commendable that those guys decided to
come back. And then you know, for the other players,
you know, if you look across the board.
Speaker 7 (26:44):
On offense and defense, you know a lot of these.
Speaker 11 (26:46):
Guys are coming from the SCS levels, the Group of
five levels.
Speaker 7 (26:50):
And then you also have, you know, a guy like
Tristan Bouncies.
Speaker 11 (26:52):
Out for the season at right tackle. But you know,
he was a player that was at a big time
program like Michigan, but wasn't thing playing time and wasn't
getting the shine that he felt like he deserved. And
so all these guys all came to Arizona and they
wanted to prove something.
Speaker 7 (27:08):
Is mail mind.
Speaker 11 (27:09):
He wanted to prove that he was a really good
running back and it wasn't just you know, a fluke
a couple of years at Texas State, right DeShawn mckknight
wanted to make sure that, you know, he was looked
at as a high level prospect and he's coming in
from UT.
Speaker 7 (27:22):
Martin and you know, you know.
Speaker 11 (27:25):
A small FCS program, and you know, if you were
to ask me what kind of impact would de Shawn
mckknight make when he first committed to Arizona, I would
have be like, I don't know, he's coming in from
UT Martin. I really don't know what kind of player
he is, and I think it speaks to the guys
who evaluate talent, the guys who are scouting the players,
(27:45):
guys Cacroley, the general manager of Fletcher Kelly, who's you know,
head of scouting at the u OFA for the football program.
Speaker 7 (27:52):
Those guys and the coaches have done such a nice
job of.
Speaker 11 (27:56):
Evaluating the diamonds of the rough, getting them here and
allowing those guys to really ball out improve themselves.
Speaker 7 (28:04):
So it's been a really good recipe.
Speaker 11 (28:07):
And you know, one good thing about Arizona moving forward
is when you look at, you know, some other guys
on the team, you know, they have some really impressive
freshmen and younger players who are developing into great prospects,
and they're learning from these veterans who are currently in
place now. And so I feel like the younger players
that are you know, in the wings right now, I
think they're going to grow into some pretty big time
(28:29):
players and they have a really good foundation moving forward.
Speaker 7 (28:33):
And you know, this season, I mean, it's just.
Speaker 11 (28:36):
Really remarkable what Brent Brennan has done because you know,
you could make a case that he was kind of
on the hot seat, like this year was the proven
year or else his future would look a little murky,
and I think it's thing to say that. I think
Brent Brant can be chilling here for a long time.
Speaker 12 (28:54):
Now.
Speaker 11 (28:54):
We'll see what the future holds after this year. But
you know, Brent Brennan is the kind of guy where
he's gonna win nine or ten games and he's not
going to bolt a couple weeks later like his predecessor
in Jet Fish. Brent Brennan is the kind of guy
that wants to be here for the long haul and
he wants to build something specially. I said it from
day one, Brent Brennan is either going to be fired
(29:15):
by Arizona or he's going to retire here. And year
two under Brent Brennan, I think Arizona football fan should
be feeling pretty good, you.
Speaker 4 (29:24):
Know, justin you just lay to all these great players
and the reason why Arizona is nine to three. But
in your eyes, who's the kind of Steve kind of
asked this earlier, who's the unsung hero of this football team,
the extra reason why they're nine to three?
Speaker 11 (29:39):
Oh man, that's a really good question, wat because I mean,
if you look at I mean the defensive side of
the ball, I mean the heart and soul of this
team has to be you know, either Trade and Stukes
or Dalton Johnson. Those guys have been absolutely fantastic. I mean,
(30:01):
if you want to go player wise, you could say, well,
those guys, you know kind of come to mind.
Speaker 7 (30:06):
But if we're just.
Speaker 11 (30:07):
Talking about like overall, I think the upsung hero of
this team has to be a guy that's on the sidelines,
and that's defensive coordinator Danny Gonzales because what he has
done with this defense. I mean we're talking about them
going from like one hundred and something in every category
last year to now like top ten, top fifteen in
(30:28):
all those categories. Like it's there's a reason why he's
up for the Royals Award.
Speaker 7 (30:33):
He is, in my.
Speaker 11 (30:34):
Opinion, one of, if not the top assistant coach in
college football when you think about the turnaround on one
side of the ball in just one year. So I'll
probably put Danny Gonzales as like the unsung hero of
Arizona this season. But you know, for players, there's been
a lot of you know, really big time prospects on the.
Speaker 7 (30:53):
Defensive side of the ball.
Speaker 11 (30:54):
Like if you know, if you want to go like
the less of the Dulton Johnson or the Trade and
Stokes route.
Speaker 7 (31:00):
You know, look at the the other like the linebackers
that they have, like Max Harris has been awesome this year.
Kay Brown. I think Kay Brown.
Speaker 11 (31:10):
Has really quietly had a very impressive second half of
the season.
Speaker 7 (31:15):
But yeah, I'll probably say just Dalton Johnson just because
you know, if you were to tell.
Speaker 11 (31:19):
Me at the start of this year, like what are
your expectations for Dalton, I'm like, Okay.
Speaker 7 (31:23):
Really solid player. He's going to be productive. He's gonna
get a lot of tackles.
Speaker 3 (31:27):
But if you look at it.
Speaker 11 (31:28):
Right now, he has the most tackled by defensive back
in the Big Twelve.
Speaker 7 (31:32):
He also is tied for the second.
Speaker 11 (31:34):
Most interceptions along with Traden Stukes and Javon Cole, second
most interceptions in the league. And you know he also
had a big time forced fumble in that game.
Speaker 7 (31:43):
Against AS two.
Speaker 11 (31:44):
So I think the evolution of Dalton Johnson has really
been fantastic to see. And as far as the offensive
side of the ball, I think the unsung Buro has.
Speaker 7 (31:55):
To be Chris Hudson.
Speaker 11 (31:56):
When you look at really the second half of the season,
This dude, all he does is catch first downs. You
know Chris Carter and Trey Spiety at the start of
the year, right there was all they all they do
is get is catch touchdowns. Chris Hudson is the guy
who all he does is is catch first downs. I
forgot what the stat was, but I think it's like
(32:17):
twenty out of his last twenty four receptions have resulted
in first downs. And if you look at like this,
the last three or four games, he has really turned
it up and not that has hit another gear. And
it's just so funny that a year after Tetaroe McMillan
leads the program, it goes on to do big things
in the NFL and shout out to him for having
(32:37):
that game when he touchdown catch yesterday. It's just so
funny that Noah's top target once again is donning the
number four jersey. Now he's not six five and can
jump out the gym like t Mac, but Chris Hudson
has hit another gear and has become Arizona's most reliable
receiver and that's really been fun to watch.
Speaker 7 (32:54):
Now for special teams.
Speaker 11 (32:56):
You want to go multiple levels here, guys, I think
specially the special teams unsung he has to be Ian Wagner,
who's got like a ninety one ninety two percent clip
at kicking touchbacks, which should be a like ninety five
ninety six percent.
Speaker 7 (33:09):
But you know, they kept wrecking up a bunch of
unsportsble like.
Speaker 11 (33:12):
Condract penalties in that home finale against Baylor, and it
ruined his touchback rate. But between his touchbacks, between holding
for field goals and the field goal operation has been
very up and down this year. As you guys know,
I think I Wagner should be considered one of the
onside heroes of this team.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
Okay, real quick, justin.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
I'm not sure you believe in the butterfly effect or whatever,
But did you ask Brent maybe a week or so
ago about did he have to go through something like
last year to get through this year? Did you ask
him something like that, because I know I wanted to
ask him this recently.
Speaker 11 (33:47):
Yeah, I think I either Lev or somebody else I
forgot who asked them. I was not the one who
asked him.
Speaker 7 (33:53):
This, but yeah, you know, like it kind of goes
back to.
Speaker 11 (33:57):
Troy's question about you know, kissing ass and there's just
a different set this year. And I also think that
Brent realized last year that Okay, I got to do
whatever's best for the betterment of Arizona.
Speaker 7 (34:09):
Football, and he had to let go of.
Speaker 11 (34:12):
Some some serious people that guys that he's had connections
with for a long time, right coaches that he's been
with for a long time, and then bringing in Joe Salave,
of bringing in Ceptdegi, moving Danny Gonzales up to defensive coordinators.
I think the lessons that he learned from last year,
I think he did a good job of learning from that,
and he put everybody at the right seat at the table.
And now that everybody's at the right seat at the table,
(34:34):
they feel really good about the direction of the program.
Speaker 7 (34:36):
Now. The big thing for Arizona each all those guys
at the table.
Speaker 11 (34:41):
Because, as you guys know, the coaching carousel is very
serious in college football, and I'm sure a lot of
people would love to have Danny Gonzalez and Ceptdegia as
a coordinators. So I think building continuity and keeping those
guys locked in, I think is very important. And I
think certainly Brent Brandia learned a lot from last year.
Speaker 3 (34:58):
Justin is always thank you very much, man.
Speaker 7 (35:01):
Appreciate you guys, Thank you, Happy all.

Speaker 2 (39:20):
Obviously a very successful season so far with u A
for a lout of different reasons. When you say volleyball,
what day Friday?
Speaker 3 (39:28):
Friday?
Speaker 4 (39:29):
I think around five is in Stanford at Stanford at Stanford,
but they play South Dakota State and the winner of
that the winner plays Stanford Utah Valley.
Speaker 3 (39:38):
And there's a loser's bracket to that.
Speaker 4 (39:40):
I'm assuming I wouldn't think so, I think now, okay,
so I would leave what's one and done?
Speaker 3 (39:45):
Yeah, okay. I didn't know if it was like softball
where you no, no, no, no.
Speaker 2 (39:50):
Okay, you are who you are. That's good for her.
I mean they played in the in the postseason. Last year,
people you know, poop pooed some of that. But here
they are. I think would have made it last year, right,
they just didn't. They got overlooked. They were still learning.
Speaker 3 (40:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (40:04):
I don't think there were an NCAA tournament team last year.
But this year I believe they've done the work. Maybe
I'll try to reach out to her tomorrow on the show.
We'll see, We'll see Missus Stubbs coach Stubbs.
Speaker 3 (40:17):
So with Noah and we kind of alluded it, alluded
to it in the press conference with Brennan today. Big
twelve Offensive Player of the Year. I don't know enough.
I don't know enough. They're pretty good quarterbacks. So Houston's quarterback?
Speaker 10 (40:31):
Who? Who?
Speaker 14 (40:32):
Who?
Speaker 3 (40:32):
Do you tell me who?
Speaker 7 (40:33):
You have?
Speaker 3 (40:34):
Swartsby at Cincinnati who had a horrible second half of
the Yes, yeah, they finished seven and five. I believe
Baylor's quarterback puts up numbers but turns over the ball
like crazy. Uh b y U. Their quarterbacks that good,
but their running game uh l. J Martin phenomenal. No
got banned up, got banged up. So it kind of
(40:55):
opens up stuff. They're surprised you there with two guys, right,
yea with three at one point. Yeah, yeah, So it
kind of just opens up some stuff because Sam Levitt
would have been there, would have been a candidate if
he didn't go down. Jordan Tyson, Jordan Tyson another one
been injury brown.
Speaker 2 (41:11):
Yeah, baby, maybe by default, no disrespect, but maybe with default.
Speaker 3 (41:14):
Well, and I think he's played well. I think what
like five interceptions.
Speaker 4 (41:18):
For twenty six touchdowns five interceptions? The guy guys above him,
Josh Hoover TCU twenty nine touchdowns with thirteen interceptions. So
you're robertson thirty one touchdowns, twelve interceptions.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
Anybody else that could be up there with a lot
of different you know, other things.
Speaker 3 (41:34):
I think that's about it because I think winning matters, oh,
no question, winning one hundred matter. So like TCUs, no,
no offensive Hoover. I think it's very good. You didn't
win enough, so maybe a dark horse.
Speaker 4 (41:47):
Cameron Dickie at Texas Tech third and rushing thirteen touchdowns,
which is the most of the season. So and in
five point seven yards per carry.
Speaker 3 (41:57):
They're pretty good. They are very good. They're good. I
think they're good enough to win the title.
Speaker 2 (42:01):
Really, what are you talking about, Michigan? Ohio States is
not good enough?
Speaker 3 (42:05):
Who are you? No, I don't think Ohio State's good enough.
They haven't been battle tested. My point is you don't
think them, but you think Texas Tech. I think Texas Texas?
Who are you Texas? Is this Troy in my eyes
bad as bad as mine? For obvious reasons. I want
to ask why you're like Stevie Wonder acting Ray Charles Hey,
(42:26):
my eyes bad bad. This whole room though we all
wear glasses out here. Yes, my catacts need to be picked.
Brennan potentially Coach of the Year.
Speaker 2 (42:40):
I think that's fair. I think that's very fair, considering
no one thought these guys. No one voted, but it
was a thirteen fourteen, fifteen sixteen team.
Speaker 3 (42:48):
They want to have been voted very highly.
Speaker 4 (42:50):
No to that argument, probably Willie Fritz on the same
record both overall and in conference. He has the head
to head win over Brett Brennan, and they were also
around that same area.
Speaker 3 (43:02):
When they finished were that in the in the same thing.
I think there are one game ahead conference because of
the tiebreaker. They are they seven and two or six
and three? Okay, yeah, I think those are the two
coaches though.
Speaker 4 (43:18):
Yeah, because type of tech, you met your expectations. You're
supposed to be where you're at right now, e Yu.
Maybe a little bit more than most people expected. Yeah,
but you're supposed to. You were supposed to be a
contender and Utah, they were supposed to be good.
Speaker 2 (43:33):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, No, Brent, all power to him because
he's he's proved a lot of people wrong.
Speaker 3 (43:41):
Honestly in the last six weeks. We'll hold you cal
and you've done it and just kind of brought it
up and we've talked about it before. You've done it
without having a reliable field goal kicker. Yeah, and when
you're a team that needs to win by the margins,
as they definitely do at times, and you can't rely
on your field goal kicker, that's impressive. Yeah, no question.
Well it's like basketball.
Speaker 2 (44:01):
If you don't mind me saying this, because we talked
about this earlier, it was only just what it is,
and they've done it without Burry's without about him playing
really well. You know, you got to have other guys
playing well obviously, but you know what I'm saying, if
all things are equal, they'd be even better if Berry's
kind of contributes more. So we'll see about the football
team go to San Diego. I'm sure that's where they're
(44:23):
gonna go more likely.
Speaker 3 (44:24):
Is that your guys' preferred destination if you had to
pick the spot? No, no, give her take uh that
for Vegas? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (44:34):
Yeah, yeah, but Sandy was fine. I mean, yeah, it's
we've been there before. I was the last time I
was there when they got beat by Nebraska pretty badly.
Speaker 3 (44:42):
Yeah. I was gonna say that game. I was justin
and I were kids that we turned it on and
all of a sudden, give me fourteen nothing getting shut
out because it was delayed. Yeah, Idaho p tatable the
dumbaky two game. Yeah you remember there is like, yeah,
I was fourteen, I was fourteen, be sixteen years ago? Right, Yeah, okay,
(45:02):
we gotta there's no call.
Speaker 2 (45:05):
Let you be the jest. Yeah, sixteen years ago. Wow,
you know that means you're old, you're young? What does
that mean?
Speaker 3 (45:15):
Making my name about? I don't remember this now. We
got a call, thank you calling Hello, you're on the air,
Night on the ball.
Speaker 7 (45:21):
Who's just.
Speaker 3 (45:23):
Nico? What's up? Hey?
Speaker 2 (45:25):
Man?
Speaker 3 (45:25):
I just got to apologize to one. Okay, Wow? Wow?
Speaker 11 (45:31):
I thought he was a damn fool man.
Speaker 7 (45:32):
I thought that Southern water poisoned him. He was right.
Speaker 4 (45:38):
Well, you know, you know, Nico, you know I'm still wrong.
I should have shot for ten and two, right, Hey, man.
Speaker 14 (45:43):
I would have don't get ahead of.
Speaker 5 (45:47):
Its kind of like Troy is saying Texas.
Speaker 3 (45:50):
I didn't say they were going to I just said
I liked them better than Ohio State going into this.
Speaker 2 (45:54):
Nico, aren't you glad I don't drug tested this place here,
because you wouldn't be on.
Speaker 3 (45:58):
Troy wouldn't be on. Who knows if.
Speaker 7 (46:00):
One would be exactly.
Speaker 3 (46:05):
We got an apology. That's good. First one, did your day?
Maybe I've been waiting.
Speaker 2 (46:10):
You gotta didn't you get in a week or so ago?
So maybe Vic said whatever? Vic was kind of like
we were right there. Yeah, that's all I owe you lunch.
I tried to take you to dinner last week. So
we'll figure out. We'll figure it out, Okay, I gotta
show him some props. Jake Fisher did this two three
years ago, and he said they're gonna win all these games,
and he.
Speaker 3 (46:31):
Was the only one. You were the only one.
Speaker 6 (46:33):
Uh.
Speaker 4 (46:34):
The main reason behind it was the schedule, and it
was one of the reasons why I thought they could
get to eight wins. And obviously they got to nine.
But having uh, I think seven or eight out of
your twelve games be in the state of Arizona helped.
So yeah, because you said they had to win the
ones year and then they go seven and one I
think in the state.
Speaker 3 (46:54):
And not facing Texas Tech, now facing Utah facing ye, no,
you're right, not facing Utah, but against But again, they
did what they had to do with the schedule. Do
you play who you have in front of you And
they were able to do that. And even though they
missed those teams, the schedule could have been lighter. I mean,
they could have played West Virginia, West Virginia or Central Florida.
(47:17):
Those seems we're very good this year. So but you
get Cincinnati on the road, and you get uh, Baylor
at home and Baylor, I know they finished at five
and seven, but that's still a high powered offense. Yeah, okay,
I wish that got about three minutes.
Speaker 2 (47:30):
Three minutes okay, h And I don't think we'll take
a call, but we'll have will be here tomorrow and Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
Speaker 3 (47:38):
How close do you think the Ulburn game will be? Realistically?
There was an Auburn Saturday.
Speaker 2 (47:44):
I know, well, Arizona Arizona by seven ish, that's it.
Speaker 12 (47:49):
Yeah, okay, it's a big game. They show up for
big games. It's I'm thinking double digits. To your point,
they don't show. They don't show up as much as
they should against the the smaller teams, smaller games. Yeah,
always been the case. Alburn is one of those teams
that's it's like who are you going to get that night? Hm,
especially since Bruce Pearl isn't there then taking over. It's
(48:11):
just a program that you don't know what they're going
to be like at the end of the year.
Speaker 2 (48:14):
I don't We don't have a line yet by two
way way too, but I would say it's seven or eight.
Speaker 3 (48:19):
Yeah, you're you could be right. I think the line
will be about six and a half, seven and a half.
I think they'll win by like twelve fourteen, where it's
close and then just too much Strengthen, Yeah, one is
really not going to have a test San Diego State,
not really Alabama. Alabama. That's that's the one. That's the one.
(48:40):
They're just a very athletic team, very very long.
Speaker 2 (48:43):
It was, but everyone who likes to play that type
of game, and they're well coached.
Speaker 3 (48:47):
Yeah, is a very good coach. Okay, you don't like no, no, no, no,
you don't. Don't. Don't because you said no, doubt try
to no, no, no.
Speaker 2 (49:01):
Just because I said no, it doesn't mean I don't
think he's a good coach. He's done tremendously well. But
is he a good coach? When you say here's the ball,
there's the basket.
Speaker 3 (49:08):
Go get it. It didn't work for Avery Johnson there.
Speaker 2 (49:12):
No. Obviously he's got talent too. There's no question. I
think he's a very good coach. He beat the crap
out of Arizona when he's up Buffalo. That's how he
got him this job. But I don't know, juntry question.
I don't know. But he's got some great results. You know,
four under his belt. Yeah, early, early in his career.
So don't go ask me a question, then go extreme
(49:34):
on me.
Speaker 3 (49:35):
I tried to go ahead and say the sky's blue.
Speaker 4 (49:39):
See what he says, likes a little bit green today.
Speaker 3 (49:44):
Know what kind of blue? Shade of blue? No Carolina
blue blue, that was blue.
Speaker 2 (49:52):
We'll see. I think he's a good coach. He's got
good talent too. We'll see Sean good coach. No, oh see,
I didn't say that. I did. It's a great recruiter.
Speaker 3 (50:05):
That's gonna be my go to. You have to be
in the room to get that. Get that. Okay, guys,
we gotta go a good one.
