Speaker 3 (00:12):
I'm Steve Rivera.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Your Troy Hunches sent your one with breaking news.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
This is Eye on the Ball, breaking news on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty.
Speaker 4 (00:22):
Happy Monday to everyone out there. You're truly hit Olindo.
We're gonna start off with Arizona Athletics women's volleyball stands
at fourteen and twelve. They are on a three game
losing the street, but they're heading back home this week
to play West Virginia six on Wednesday and Friday three
o'clock against Cincinnati. Didn't you say, mister predictor, that they
(00:43):
were going to make the tournament?
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Somebody? I didn't.
Speaker 4 (00:45):
I didn't predict that. I said that they were projected. Oh,
they were projected, Okay, and they they still kind of are.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Next time, you need to be less like me and
annunciate and like I could do that.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
Okay, No, no, I don't. I need to.
Speaker 5 (01:04):
News.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
More news for women's volleyball. Jordan Wilson was drafted by
the Grand rapid Grand Rapids rise in the m l
V draft.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Didn't even know that what that was there.
Speaker 6 (01:16):
I knew there was athletes Unlimited Volleyball League. I didn't
know that there was that league as well.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
I think it's in his thirty year. Okay, okay, women's
volleyball or not women's volleyball. Women's basketball stands at four
and oh they played tomorrow against Northern Colorado at six o'clock.
I'll be covering that game.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
How do you learn how to be a winner? Play
a bunch of losers? Rack them up?
Speaker 6 (01:40):
Thought, And I don't blame her for doing it. It's
a smart thing to do. You're trying to learn. You're
building a new program that you had to put together
on the fly. There wasn't a lot of time. So
rack up the wins while you can.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Yeah, she did. You see her press coverage last night.
She was upset. You can tell we should have played
better than and she's honest with that because you're not
playing a schedule.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
So get those wins now.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
They got the win on Friday at against any U
eighty seven seventy six. Kay, well, men's basketball, we haven't
didn't have a show on Thursday Friday, So latest update
with them. They went on the road and beat Yukon
sixty seven.
Speaker 3 (02:18):
What'd you think?
Speaker 6 (02:19):
I thought it was the most impressive win in the
Tommy Lloyd era, and I know of the regular season.
I know that Duke game was very impressive. Yeah, but
you were able to do it go into Yukon defending
national like Duke hasn't been back to back national champs
in a while. Going to Yukon, and for most of
the game, it felt like Arizona controlled that game. I
(02:39):
know Yukon tied it up sixty all ahead, but and
went ahead. But I didn't think there was any doubt
in my mind that Arizona is going to pull that off.
And they were just the flat out better did. They
out rebounded them, they muscled them in the paint, and
they had a ton of stunyest.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
Any into the big guy of their Guy show.
Speaker 6 (02:58):
Yeah no, I mean that's definitely actor Senior, But you know,
I mean his rebounding totals weren't insane.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
You still got to crash the glass. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah,
that's the thing.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Yeah no, no, I'm just saying that just to be
that is yeah realistic here, Yeah, no, it's a great win.
I'm sure the Biggs winning.
Speaker 3 (03:16):
Is here in the regular season.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
Yeah, no, no, I'm trying to go back, you know. You
and I went to Duke. It was the first give
the year. Yeah, okay, I don't. I have to kind
of and that's a short span, yeah, you know, okay.
Speaker 4 (03:27):
Jaden Browley had twenty one points, called Pete with sixteen
and twelve, and now Arizona stands as the number two
team in the country. The new AP Top twenty five
pole got eleven first place votes.
Speaker 6 (03:40):
I'm a little shock they jumped to Houston. To be honest,
I still think this is it. He'ston's best team in
the country.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
This that poll is more obviously it's a media driven
popularity poll. Yeah no, but but CBS and ESPN did
a lot of that pulling forld Yeah, because they moved
him to number one.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Their polls don't matter. Neither does this one.
Speaker 2 (03:59):
Actually, but they got a lot of publicity for it,
you know, doing exactly what you said, winning pretty impressively,
and they have they have.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
Okay, some honors that came from that game. Co O
Pete was named Newcomer of the Week and Jaden Browley
was part of the Big twelve starting five, and was
also named National Player of the Week by NCAA dot Com.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Here's my guys. You know, you guys are young and
I'm way older. It could be your dad, and you
don't want that. That that the national media whoever they are,
and they know who they are because they've been doing
a long time, just as long as me, that they
don't pay attention enough to Arizona basketball because they fail
on this a lot where they overlook Arizona until it's
(04:44):
too late to overlook. You know, here we are three
weeks in, four weeks in whatever, three weeks in, and
oh we didn't see this coming. You've seen this program
for a number of years. Shouldn't you even have a
hint of it happening?
Speaker 6 (04:56):
Well, Like I was shocked that they where did they
start out? And the eight people at thirteen? Yeah, I
was shot they weren't a top ten team. Yeah, because
if you put Arizona's roster and you put Kentucky over it, Yeah,
you have four returners and the number two recruiting class
in the country. Guess what, You're gonna be a top
five team. Like that's just how it is. So so
you understand what I'm saying. Yeah, for sure, Yeah, because
(05:16):
he doing a lot. Oh you know my dad, YadA.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Well, you should have been paying attention, even giving him credit,
because it happens a lot. It's happened on five times
in my time, and that's not a whole lot in
my time, but it's a lot of times. Because it's
still the same character as the Andy Kats of the world,
you know, the Goodman's and YadA YadA.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
Oh I didn't see, of course, because you didn't look probably.
Speaker 6 (05:36):
Yeah, no, no, yeah, he did a quick glance to
the roster of that. Okay, yeah, they lost Kayleb. The
lost this and he lost Henry. But yeah, well yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
Arizona football moves to eight and three after their avalanche
against Baylor in the second half forty one to seven times.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
I thought somebody was going to call the talk to you,
senor maybe he still will, and maybe he will.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
You know, I'm waiting for it too.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Because he said, he said, and uh, he said, you
were a little too kind, but hey, you're the apprentice
for you greats.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
You're a nice grader for this week? What went wrong?
Speaker 4 (06:14):
I actually I thought I got a lot of compliments finally.
Speaker 6 (06:18):
Beside besides special teams because I'm sorry, Michael Segotta Madina,
that ain't the thing there that that's been minus.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
Okay, So that's because I thought the punk game was
pretty we sent you great U. I think they gave
the offense in a minus because there was a stretch
where it left a lot on the field. Defense in
a Uh. That speaks for itself. The special teams to
C minus and coaching in a.
Speaker 6 (06:42):
Yeah, that's what would you have given? Because you don't
rate for Fieda. I rate Trafida and Brendan every week.
What what would you have given Fafida for this game?
Speaker 3 (06:51):
Uh? Probably be okay, that's a what did you do?
C plus? What was he like?
Speaker 6 (06:58):
Fourteen and twenty five? Pletion percentage wasn't great? I know
he had a few drop passes there, the interception. I
know it's not his fault, but there was the pick.
I just thought he left a couple of plays out there.
But he made it up for the rushing game rush
for thirty three yards. So it just was It wasn't
a bad game. It just wasn't one of his better games.
Speaker 4 (07:15):
I think that's one of the more underlying factors into
wy Ares on his am and three. The implementation of
no Fida's legs in the offense has been has made
a difference in those wins.
Speaker 6 (07:26):
And he talked about it before the year. The two
biggest things they talked about before the season, but Fida
trying to use his legs and then the bigger wins
this season he has and Brett Brennan saying they're not
kissing ass anymore. And you see that mentality in the program.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Yeah. The only problem I have with is not on
the field, well, not on the field, not on the field, no, no,
with who oh, okay, you probably know what it is.
Speaker 6 (07:50):
Yes, yes, and I agree he's him not talking to
You're too nice to the reporters after victories when you
set on records and he's doing all these things, please
talk about it.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
That's the story.
Speaker 6 (08:02):
We haven't talked to him since the NAU game. I
mean sorry, since the BYU game. I don't know why
he said NAU since the BYU game, and you look
what he's done on the road. We have no weekly
availability with him. Seven and seventy six yards passing, seven touchdowns,
zero interceptions, seventy seven percent completion percentage, and road games,
(08:23):
and we haven't talked to him.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Yeah, that's the only problem.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
And I know it's humbling and all that stuff, but
at some point, guess what if he does happen to
let you on in the NFL or whatever that, guess
what you have to do.
Speaker 6 (08:37):
Talk to people. And here's the thing about the quarterback position.
You're you're the face of the program, even if you
don't want to be. You're the face of the program. Yeah, good, bad,
or indifferent. It doesn't matter what you do on the field.
You are there, win, lose, tire, draw. You have to
be there. Talking just comes with the title.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
In that Baylor win, Dalton Johnson had eighteen tackles and
it earned him the Big twelve D Defensive Player of
the Week award.
Speaker 6 (09:02):
Okay, and you gave him an a right the whole Yeah, okay.
And Genesis had sixteen sixteen right behind him. I mean
I thought it was an error at first, to be honest,
how many how many tackles? I's like, oh, are we sure?
Incredible performance by both those two.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
Yeah, they left it all onto the field. One last time.
Looking at the NBA Cats last Friday, Killer Love had
a career day with twenty six points, going nine for twelve,
six for fourteen from the three point line, and they're
win against the Golden State Warriors.
Speaker 3 (09:34):
So remember last year.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
You don't know why you're gonna bring up Tommy Lloyd talking,
talking very honestly from his heart, and we're.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
Looking at is he going to be an NBA guy?
Is he going to be? Well, he's an NBA guy. Well, Steve,
you you doubted him. No, I asked the question. I
asked the question, and you.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
You're going to say that, but I asked the question,
you know, because it wasn't me, It was the NBA
experts saying.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
That he was not in any mock draft. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:02):
Yeah, yeah, So again people who know don't really know.
And one of the things that I received many years ago,
there's no such thing as experts. There's just that you
don't know enough. There's no such thing. You covered the team,
what do you know? You know what I'm saying. It's
like the college bast runners. They cover college basketball, what
do they know?
Speaker 6 (10:20):
They don't And to be honest, and you see it
in draft class again, guy like Calil blub goes undrafted,
a guy like I don't know. We'll say Russell Wilson
goes third, fourth, fifth round, whatever. Even the GMS. You
know so much, Yeah that you just overthink it. Just
shut up and picked sometimes, McConnell. Look at the NFL draft.
(10:41):
How many how many guys do you see miss on picks?
They're overthinking party. You just need winners and no congratulations
to Caleb. How long he does it whatever, He's already
showing that he can do it.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
Yeah, Aaron Gordon will be out at least four to
six weeks with a hamstring injury. Uh the injury eight
in exited their win against the Jazz with a knee
contusion in the second quarter.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
Uh, he's doing what he needs to. Okay, Yeah, because
you haven't heard anything good or bad.
Speaker 3 (11:10):
We'll see how it shows up to come playoff time. Yeah,
Like what do it matters?
Speaker 7 (11:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (11:14):
Or when there's the slight the slightest inconvenience, you're turning
more into me than never. I'm not too sure I'm
proud of that.
Speaker 7 (11:22):
Modes.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
Give me some cleen exbed tear up.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
Looking at some other college basketball scores from this weekend,
Purdue took it to Texas Tech eighty six to fifty
six in the Baja mar Championship, Louisville, hang on, I
guess against Cincinnati seventy four sixty four, that was a
pretty close game for most of that game. By you
took it to Wisconsin ninety eight to seventy and let
(11:47):
me see there there's one. Oh, there's one happening right
now between Iowa State and Saint John's tied at sixty
four with just under ten minutes.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
So at the Chamana Players era players. So that's in Vegas.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
I think that's going to be then the new thing
to go to, the biggest thing.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Yeah, it's and Iel stuff right, and the Shamanad starts
this week too, I guess I think in Male.
Speaker 6 (12:08):
Have you seen the field? It's not only this year
but next year when Arizona goes.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
Yeah, I've seen. It's not as great as it's terrible. Yes,
that as great.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
They're thinking that one money because they're playing all the
great games now in the preseason.
Speaker 3 (12:22):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
No, it's unfortunate because that's what that was what college
basketball was about.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
East Week. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
Yeah, now they're trying to say Feast week, but this
is skinny Turkey.
Speaker 4 (12:31):
Yeah, Turkey, turn Duncan turn Duncan Turkey looking at looking
at some Sunday NFL scores, you had the Lions surviving
in overtime against the two and ten Giants thirty four
to twenty seven. The Chiefs came back in overtime to
beat the Colts twenty three to twenty. At home, the
Cardinals with a pretty big blunder against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
(12:55):
They lost an overtime twenty seven. The blunder they gave
up a lead. Oh okay, Uh, whose game? Dallas? Yeah, Dallas.
Dallas came back twenty four unanswered.
Speaker 3 (13:06):
They gave up. They didn't even kick.
Speaker 6 (13:08):
I'll get no, no, no, I'll say answer. I've heard
Brian and all that. That's that's ridiculous. That's unanswered. I'm sorry,
he said Brian and Brecleys in CETI for Arizona.
Speaker 8 (13:18):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (13:18):
They don't like the term unanswered. They say that, well,
the team had an answer, it just wasn't a good one. No,
it's it's twenty four unanswered points. Didn't That sounds like
unanswered philosophy right there?
Speaker 3 (13:29):
Okay, that sounds like the momentum thing. But I get it.
You had no momentum to score.
Speaker 4 (13:35):
The title of his Uh, autobiography. Well you had an answer,
just wasn't a good one.
Speaker 1 (13:41):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
His title for his is going to be off my Laws.
Speaker 2 (13:45):
No, it's gonna be uh the momentum ended here, that's
gonna be my my Tombstone.
Speaker 4 (13:52):
Momentum. Then Monday night Football Panthers played the forty nine Yers.
Look for Tetroo McMillan to possibly have a good game.
Oh yeah, first time time matchup for him.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
Okay.
Speaker 4 (14:02):
Uh, some unfortunate news out of the college football world.
Two UA B players were allegedly stabbed by teammate. Uh,
they've been released from the hospital before their game on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (14:13):
Oh, I thought it was after the game. Somebody before
the game before.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
Hours before to two teammates hours before home game last weekend.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
That doesn't build good team chemistry. Hey, we got to
go because we're gonna get a call from Chuck Cecil
on the other side.

Fine?
Speaker 2 (19:37):
I'm sure you've heard that a thousand, myth not a
million times when the issue comes around.
Speaker 7 (19:44):
Uh, yes, the team of norths.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
You even say it like yeah, you mean it to you.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
Uh, just talk real quick about the season. What a
fantastic seasons. It's been.
Speaker 13 (19:57):
Yes, sir, and you know what, and the give credit
to coach Brennan. Clearly it starts at the top and
he has.
Speaker 7 (20:07):
Done a great job just the.
Speaker 13 (20:10):
Galvanizing the coaching staff and getting everybody aligned and then
but all that being said, at the end of the day,
the bottom line, I don't care how good your coaches are.
If the players are not in, you do not have
a chance. And by the way, our men are in
(20:32):
and they are playing hard, they're practicing hard, and they
just bought in and it's just fantastic. It's like and
like I say to them, I'll go to war with
those guys any day, all.
Speaker 7 (20:47):
Day, you know.
Speaker 6 (20:48):
And part of the defensive success are three players that
have chosen this program repeatedly through coaching changes and just
the era of Nil and Trade and st Stalton Johnson
and Genesis Smith. Just your thoughts on how they have
developed from their time at the beginning of Arizona to
now what the players they are today.
Speaker 13 (21:11):
Well, I actually recruit gen from Hamilton, and I know
Dalton from Katie, Texas and Stuxie. You know, I've been
I've been here through the entire journey and if you
could have seen all three of those guys when they
first got here, it was incredible the how much they
have matured. And you talk about boys to men that
(21:34):
they are, they embody that wholeheartedly. They they and they
are literally literally the core of this team and one
of the reasons that we are playing as good a
football as we are.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
What makes them so good? You played back there? What
makes them You gotta have some i Q football IQ
first of all. And instincts. Yes, all of the aboves.
Speaker 13 (22:02):
All three of them, and they're a little different in
their ways. But the one thing that they have in
common that there's a.
Speaker 7 (22:10):
Few of them. One is communication.
Speaker 13 (22:14):
Okay, they talk, they know what it is, they tell
other people what to do, and they you know, not
just on the field, but off the field. But the
other thing is they watch film by the way, they
know what's coming. They anticipate well and and they have
and all three of them have talent, have some talent too,
(22:37):
which is a nice thing to have as well. But
the intangibles, uh, just off the charts for all three
of them. I think they'll all three have opportunity to
to get on a team in the NFL.
Speaker 6 (22:49):
You know, we got to hear Brendan talk about the energy,
the build up of the rivalry game this week, and
how to handle it as a head coach and how
how he wants the team to handle it in terms
of the preparation. But I want to hear from you
because you were with coach Larry Smith, and you're a
coach that told me just the energy of that week
(23:11):
with the two coaches, because I mean it was well documented.
Both coaches clearly their their main goal at the beginning
of the season, you have to beat ASU.
Speaker 13 (23:21):
Oh yeah, it was funny and I was just having
this conversation. But when I got here in nineteen eighty
three as a freshman, I didn't even know there was
another school in the state. And I'm just telling I'm
just telling you. By the end of my freshman year,
after my first season here, I knew very well that
(23:43):
there was a team up north that we did not
like because coach Larry Smith, God bless me, he was fantastic.
Speaker 8 (23:53):
But he was very clear on our approach with that team.
Speaker 4 (24:00):
It's funny I covered the team for the paper with
Quirky in eighty seven, eighty eight, eighty nine, those years,
and I remember going to Oregon and one of the
coaches that I spoke to for a story, he says,
all I know is I'm glad number six isn't on
the team anymore because you had that much of an
impact at the end of the day. And I think
(24:22):
most of us who've seen you play and where around
what do you think your legacy is? And maybe will.
Speaker 7 (24:27):
Be Oh, I don't you know, that's really not up
to me.
Speaker 13 (24:32):
I was just truly blessed to be able to play. Obviously,
I don't know if I'd even get to play nowadays.
I mean, don't I rot to play?
Speaker 7 (24:44):
Is I was good at.
Speaker 13 (24:45):
Targeting, you know, I mean that was it.
Speaker 8 (24:48):
I didn't cover anybody.
Speaker 13 (24:51):
So no, I mean just I love to play football.
I mean I can't even tell you how much I
miss it. And that's what I tell our boys almost
on a daily basis, is don't waste a snap.
Speaker 7 (25:06):
They're all precious and it goes away.
Speaker 13 (25:09):
And there's not a day I'm just turned sixty one
and there's not a day I don't go out to
practice and wish I could still play in practice.
Speaker 8 (25:18):
So it's like, you know, get it in why you can't.
Speaker 2 (25:21):
Right, No question, I know your lovely wife prefairly well,
obviously she's on the community doing her stuff and in
the real world stuff. But I don't even know if
you drink. But if do, you have to pay for
a beer anywhere you go.
Speaker 13 (25:35):
No, I have not had a drink in ten years,
so kind of decided not to and.
Speaker 7 (25:44):
On to the side.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
But you're that popular in this town.
Speaker 3 (25:48):
People Chu Chuck.
Speaker 13 (25:53):
Well people think that I'm that I can't be him
because I'm too small, so.
Speaker 7 (25:59):
I can't.
Speaker 8 (26:00):
I can't kind of covert.
Speaker 2 (26:01):
You know, you look a little like Chuck Cecil. Yeah, yeah, okay, whatever,
go ahead.
Speaker 8 (26:07):
He's much bigger than that coach.
Speaker 4 (26:11):
This year, during pregame drills, you're out there tackling the
dummies with the defense. Last year your your head budding
Owen gossip pregame. What's your message to this team for
this week?
Speaker 2 (26:21):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (26:22):
With dealing with tempi normal school.
Speaker 13 (26:25):
Well that that whole uh you know, hitting the dummy
thing that you know what they call that, right, it's
a dummy on dummy crime.
Speaker 3 (26:34):
Look at you.
Speaker 8 (26:39):
Uh No, it's it's like I said, it's just a.
Speaker 13 (26:42):
It's a nice way for me to to exercise.
Speaker 8 (26:46):
A little my energy and game day energy.
Speaker 13 (26:50):
And uh, you know, just trying to help the boys
get ready and and uh get him juiced up a
little bit. That's basically basically it for me. That's that's
what that all came about. How that came about.
Speaker 8 (27:04):
So I don't know, that's that's about it.
Speaker 3 (27:07):
You know.
Speaker 6 (27:07):
I don't think a lot of people across the country
in college football realize how heated the rivalry is between
Arizona and Arizona State. I know it doesn't have the
history in terms of power programs of like an Auburn, Alabama,
Michigan Ohio State, but the hatred is just as much
and maybe even deeper, because it's not just about the
(27:28):
football game. It's about the two cities and whatnot, just
your reaction from your time in Tucson to the passion
from both sides and really the fan bases during this
game and during that week.
Speaker 7 (27:43):
Oh boy, I really don't want to.
Speaker 13 (27:52):
Let's just say it's real and it's legit, and there's
and there's a core of reasons behind it, the rivalry
from both sides. I guess I know for me, when
I basically drew the line and was done with that
(28:18):
team up north, is when Steve Kerr and I were
the same year and when his dad was assassinated in
Beirut in January of eighty four, and they the basketball
team played the team up north in Timp a month later,
(28:39):
and the crowd started channing, Steve, where's your dad, Steve,
where's your dead? At that point I was done, and
I still am to this day.
Speaker 2 (28:51):
Yeah, makes sense, makes sense. Maybe last night if we
can kind of revisit that run. So then Rapport throws
the ball you intercepted. At what point did you say
I can run this all the way? And at what
point he says, God, I got to run this all
the way?
Speaker 13 (29:09):
Well, I tell you it was.
Speaker 7 (29:11):
It's funny.
Speaker 13 (29:12):
I knew what the play was when they snapped the
ball and they started and when they came off the ball,
and so I kind of anticipated where he was going
back with it and was lucky enough to catch it.
And really I basically ran out of the end zone
out of self defense as much as anything else. And
(29:32):
then when they're big old lineman that played in the
league for twenty years whatever came to tackle me, and
so I had to try and out run him. And
I mean, basically that's how I wound up running down
the sideline.
Speaker 8 (29:47):
To just running for my life.
Speaker 3 (29:50):
But well did he come close.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
But then you got to the end zone and your
guys got you.
Speaker 3 (29:56):
You know, how tired? Oh yeah, how tired were you? O?
Speaker 7 (30:00):
Oh yeah?
Speaker 13 (30:00):
No, no, no, that was a I could barely be
And the other part.
Speaker 7 (30:04):
Of it that people don't understand.
Speaker 13 (30:06):
I think it was the end of like a fourteen
or fifteen play drive. It was like the fourteenth or
fifteenth play of the drive. So I mean I was
tired when they snapped it, but I took one hundred
and seven yards.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
Yeah no, And that was just you know, I'm sure.
How can I say this? How had how had life
changed for you since then? Although you've had a great,
fantastic life in the NFL, And how did that change
even on campus back then?
Speaker 8 (30:36):
Oh? I don't know.
Speaker 13 (30:39):
I guess it was just definitely a highlight.
Speaker 7 (30:42):
To say the least, and something very special for me.
And again.
Speaker 13 (30:49):
Having that that that was and people don't know, but
that was there.
Speaker 7 (30:55):
This the team up Norse only lost that year.
Speaker 13 (31:00):
We knocked them out of the Rose Bowl my junior
year up there, and uh we beat them my senior year.
It didn't are my junior year. It didn't didn't matter
whether they had already like I said, they had not
lost the game. They were undefeated, they had one tie
(31:22):
against Washington State, so.
Speaker 7 (31:23):
They were going to the Rose Bowl.
Speaker 13 (31:25):
But we basically by defeating them, basically.
Speaker 8 (31:30):
Kept them from having the opportunity of winning a national championship. Actually,
so I do take some pride in that.
Speaker 2 (31:37):
Yeah, of course, of course, Well Chuck is always thanks
good to talk to you, and well you don't wish
you well this weekend and be safe again.
Speaker 8 (31:46):
Thank you very much, Thanks so much, guys.
Speaker 7 (31:49):
You guys have a great one.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
And bear down. As Chuck Cecil.
Speaker 2 (31:54):
You might recognize him, maybe not because he's drug seel.
That's fun Yeah, you look familiar, little it, he's bigger,
that's funny.

Speaker 2 (36:00):
Steve, you're Troy your one and I think I lest
my wallet digital wallet digital.
Speaker 3 (36:06):
Well I hate that stuff.
Speaker 13 (36:07):
Oh.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
Another thing, and talking to the people who are like
old like me, they don't go.
Speaker 4 (36:11):
They don't like go in the games because everything the
ticket things digital, digital, physical ticket.
Speaker 3 (36:17):
Hey, I do have to agree with them. There.
Speaker 6 (36:19):
There was something about getting your season tickets, yes, and
having them all printed out. So my aunt and uncle, uh,
they've kept my grandmother's season tickets to Michel that they've
had since mckel opened. They pay for them to print
out the tickets, but they charge you to print out tickets.
They think they told you like forty bucks to print
out the season tickets.
Speaker 3 (36:38):
Cause maybe a dollar to print that. Like come on,
you old person convenience.
Speaker 6 (36:44):
Like you half your fan base is on aarp, like
print them out? I mean that, like like you got
to print that out.
Speaker 3 (36:54):
Yeah, well that's another reason why they don't go. The
physical ticket.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
Yeah, hey, look at me trying to figure out where
my park. You have to pay ten bucks. I'm okay
with that if that's what it means. But yeah, that's
free parking, you know. And then and I gotta go
to the game, right I get to go talk to
the you give work tickets with the possibility of Tommy
saying kind of questions that he had cond tickets.
Speaker 3 (37:19):
It's it's a fan. It's a fun fane.
Speaker 2 (37:22):
Thirty eight years of it. Six books. Okay, and there's
by the way, there's no money in books. They just
do it. Yeah, okay. And he calls please do Vic.
You're you're a little late with your call. Five two
zero four one six seventy four forty. I'd like to
hear from you. You basketball progress of football progress, give
(37:43):
us issue stories, issue stories. Yeah, that's fine. Jay doesn't
go to Phoenix anymore because he imagined this. He's got
in a fight or his dad almost did. I'm shocked.
Speaker 3 (37:53):
Hello, you're on the airline of the ball. Who's this?
Speaker 20 (37:56):
Hey, Steve Troy, this is.
Speaker 3 (38:01):
What do you going on on?
Speaker 7 (38:04):
Oh man?
Speaker 20 (38:04):
I'm just you're asking people when they believed in everything,
and do they believe? I believe in this program. I
believe in the beginning of the season, I believed that
Brennan deserved a shot to try to get it up
on its feet. I think he's I think he's made
(38:25):
great strides in doing that. I mean I think he
showed that he's not afraid to make changes. I mean,
I mean, he had history with Babers and stuff, and
he kicked them to the curb, probably nicer than I
said it, but that happened. But one of the big
things about Arizona fan, and I hate to call you out, Brian,
(38:51):
but Arizona fan would complain if you hung him with
a new rope. How do you go in? How do
you go into a game surprisingly favored by six and
a half, you win by twenty four And the first
thing he does, he gets on the phone and he
starts whining about points that got left on the field.
(39:16):
I mean, the way people were talking about Baylor coming up, thinking, man,
if our offense don't keep up, this could very well
be a loss, and then a lot in a lot
of eyes of the pessimistic Wildcat fan, the season would
be lost. I mean, people are still whining and complaining
(39:39):
about the two that got away. But what would you
have rather gotten if Arizona had gotten blown out of
those games? Or the lessons that they learned. And we
can play with the We can play with anybody in
this league. You know, even Texas Tech isn't undefeated. And
(40:01):
and uh so I think that uh, I think Brennan
has made is I think the program is gonna be
fine with him and Juan. A lot of these seniors
are Brennan seniors. There's a lot of guys that are
that were just here for this year or the last
(40:21):
two years. So the development is there. Yeah, I mean
these running these running back group, the running back group,
where did they come from? You know, they weren't coming
from other you know, power forward schools. They came from
lesser schools and stuff. So these guys got they've got
(40:43):
good eyes for talent and they've been able to get
up and running. And you know, hopefully with the success,
you know they're going to be able to replace these
guys with maybe a little bit better transfer coming in
for next year. Nobody to to Troy's point early, you know,
(41:07):
next year's season or next year's schedule is going to
be tough for you know, one thing that I got
tired of this year was every time some every time
Arizona beat somebody, they sucked. So this team basically for
a lot of the a lot of the talking head
postcasters and and and and tweeters, this team they're basically
(41:29):
a two and eight team, but they're not. They're eight
and three and with a chance to go nine and
three and ten and three.
Speaker 8 (41:40):
And I and.
Speaker 20 (41:41):
Who's who's left, it's going to be unbeatable. ASU's not
And whoever they get paired up in the Bowl game with,
they're not going to be unbeatable. I just say, let
you know, you know what. They they played who they played,
and they were successful more often than not. And I'm
not going to ride them all off anymore this year.
(42:03):
And I think, uh, I think the program's in good hands.
And uh, hopefully the attendance can can get fixed. Hopefully
some people will get off their buds. But like you
guys have been saying, there's there's for as many people
that don't go to the games. That's how many excuses
there are to not go to the games. I went
(42:23):
to the last three. I'll admit I didn't want to
go to Weber State, and I didn't I wanted to
go to k State and uh, and I just I
couldn't find anybody to go with, so I just let
it go. But uh, and that be why you I
had a family thing. But I mean I made I
made an effort. What it wasn't a Jay Gonzales level effort,
(42:45):
but I'm not going to get mad.
Speaker 2 (42:48):
Okay, thank you, Don thanks for the call. Appreciate it. Thanks, guys,
appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (42:55):
Yeah, would you go if you didn't have tickets? You
your parents school, You're dead? No, no, no, not anymore.
They used to have season tickets for a very long time,
and how come they don't.
Speaker 6 (43:07):
When rich Rod came in, they moved the family section
from the like fifteen yard line, which was like thirteen
rows back where they used to come out onto the field,
the old home Mocker rooms. They moved it up to
nosebleed and jacked up the prices, so they just got
priced out at that point. They dropped when someone came.
They bought season tickets when someone came, and the product
(43:28):
on the field and everything.
Speaker 2 (43:29):
Was just and I think that the fan to that point,
I think the fan and I just got a text
from another person who supports the program financially as well,
or used to that the price out and the product
became so bad they said I've had enough, yeah, and
just decided, yeah, what's it worth?
Speaker 3 (43:47):
Yeah yeah yeah.
Speaker 6 (43:49):
So there especially the comfort of the TV now, and
I don't want to use the word excuses, but there
are reasons, and maybe they're the same word.
Speaker 2 (43:56):
But the reasons, especially the priced out thing. Am I
gonna go? Am I gonna have fun? Do my kids
really want to be there?
Speaker 3 (44:02):
You know what?
Speaker 2 (44:03):
There's a lot of things I don't know, poo poo.
After haveting gone as a fan is at least an
observer two three weeks ago and saying God, I can
I get it now?
Speaker 3 (44:12):
Now? Would my parents go with my mom's health issues
just now.
Speaker 2 (44:15):
And again to that point of being older and having
to walk up to the seats and you know, uncomfortable
and YadA YadA.
Speaker 6 (44:22):
But making an effort to maybe go one or two
games the bigger games of the year. Yeah, yes, they
would do that.
Speaker 3 (44:28):
Good call. Hello, you're on the air nine of the ball.
Who's this Hey, buddy, it's Rick.
Speaker 7 (44:33):
How are you doing good?
Speaker 3 (44:33):
How are you Rick? I'm good.
Speaker 7 (44:36):
Well.
Speaker 21 (44:36):
First of all, congratulations and another great out tour.
Speaker 3 (44:39):
Well, thank you very much, thank you very much.
Speaker 8 (44:41):
Yeah, you guys did a heck.
Speaker 22 (44:43):
Of a job putting that up again for a kid,
I got to hear part of Jay's comment about the
Stokes generation, and first of all, the economy was.
Speaker 21 (44:57):
Stronger, number one.
Speaker 7 (45:00):
Number two.
Speaker 21 (45:01):
There was a different personality to Arizona football back then.
And it's not the discount anything else, but we had
so many variables when it came to coaches and coaches
changes since Stoops left, and frankly, I don't think rich
Rod was very fan friendly. And the scoops in the
(45:25):
AD's office, they did a much better job of getting
out into the community and being more public. And I
think that's part of the dilemma.
Speaker 8 (45:36):
And the other part is my generation is getting older.
It's harder to move around, and.
Speaker 21 (45:42):
It's just a different audience. And here's one other thing
that I don't think people realize the people that were
supporting Arizona Athletics back in those days. That was more
of my generation of I guess money for lack of
(46:02):
a better way, but yes, and there and there seemed
to be more community, local businesses, and a lot less
of the.
Speaker 8 (46:15):
Corporate the hype of national There.
Speaker 21 (46:18):
Was a lot of local presence. When you go to
a game, you would sieve every celebrity from Jim Click
to you know and you know the people I'm talking about. Yeah,
And you don't see.
Speaker 8 (46:30):
That audience out there anymore. And you've seen a lot
of different people.
Speaker 2 (46:34):
Let me ask you. Let me ask you a quick
quick to finish your point if you have it.
Speaker 21 (46:40):
No, I was just going to say, it doesn't make
it necessarily right, but it's a reality that that's part
of two Sun culture.
Speaker 2 (46:46):
Yeah, okay, So my final question, Uh, they signed Casino
also for twenty years, thirty million. Whatever your thoughts on that.
Speaker 8 (46:55):
I thought they gave away the fun. I well, first of.
Speaker 21 (47:01):
All, you look at twenty years and sixty million dollars.
When you look at inflation that three million dollars a year,
what is it going to be actually worse over the
course of twenty years. And the other thing is it's
(47:21):
Casino or Delso going to give out a bunch of
tickets to people so they can go to the game
and help promote Arizona Athletics to the casinos. I don't
know the details of the agreement, but I just thought,
if you're going to make somebody naming rights, at least
get your money's worth. And I don't think the U
(47:41):
of A is going to get its money's worth over
the course of twenty years.
Speaker 20 (47:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (47:45):
I was talking to you know the guys, you and
I know and we talked about the money rights, sixty
million whatever it was. It's like three years, three million
dollars a year. And I'm thinking when you look at
it that way, you're thinking, Okay, well, it is what
it is, and they're going to probably have to redo
this in the next ten to fifteen years.
Speaker 6 (48:01):
I'm sure there's clauses or holes in the contract to
renegotiate and stuff like that. Again, like Asrai read Francoisse
said during her press conference, it is the largest deal
in the Big twelve and one of the largest deals
in the country as of right now. And again that
goes to they're going to do this with McHale. Keep
McHale sent her name, but I'm gonna do it with that.
(48:22):
They're gonna do it like this is only the surface level.
This is the beginning of it that has been building
up for a very long time.
Speaker 8 (48:30):
Yeah, I just I'm sorry.
Speaker 21 (48:32):
And here's man, this is just from my perspective, I'm
not really enthused about having a gambling entity out there.
I mean, there's enough issue there's enough enough issues with gambling,
and that concerns me. It would be like having Budweiser
(48:56):
name the stadium. I mean, it's just like, okay, enough
is enough. Okay, but that's just me.
Speaker 2 (49:02):
Yeah, okay, Oh you're not alone. You're not alone, and
you're not alone on the other side either, So okay, Rick,
thanks for coming.
Speaker 3 (49:08):
N thanks, y back. Thanks. We got about three minutes.
We got three minutes. One more call.
Speaker 2 (49:12):
Hello, you're on the air nine the ball. Who's this?
Speaker 23 (49:15):
This is justin?
Speaker 3 (49:16):
Justin. You had about two and a half minutes.
Speaker 23 (49:18):
Go ahead, Okay, real quick. I've lived here longer than
I have lived anywhere in my life, but I'm not
from Arizona. When I came to Arizona in two thousand
and two, I was I came here for grad school.
I already had a fan base that I was a
part of, and I loved that school. But it was
a small school. I loved Arizona. For me, coming from
a small school in the East Coast to a big
(49:39):
school was hey, this was a big this was a
big deal. This is big time football. I graduated and
stuck around. I've had season tickets ever since I graduated.
We started from the Zona Zoo all the way down
the south end zone when you could still kick the
football up and up the west side here's here's here's
what I think the big issue is with with Arizona football.
It doesn't embrace the fact enough that is is a
(50:00):
big school and you should play into it right. And
I know there's a lot of talk about establishing a
culture before you can really get that or what comes first,
the winning or the culture. Well, I think the big
JumboTron although the acoustics are bad there, and the Sands
Club and getting that done, the naming rights, that's how
you start debate to become a big boy football school.
And you get with the time and I think, you know,
(50:21):
I think this is a good deal. Maybe it's not
the best deal, but it's a start. It's where we
need to go. And that's as an observer that's invested.
I buy five season tickets every year and I'm going
to be moving my tickets again, upgrading, you know, because
I love that team. I support it brought I bought
into Tucson. It's been good to me. Again, those are
my thoughts about football here at vie of A. I'll
take your comments.
Speaker 7 (50:41):
Off the air.
Speaker 6 (50:42):
Big call I hit on every point one hundred percent.
Agree Again, this has been built up. They've been talking
about naming rights for many years. Yeah, this is the
start of it. And you look at Alabama, you look
at Auburn, any big time program you can name, they
do this stuff.
Speaker 3 (50:56):
This is how you get it done.
Speaker 6 (50:57):
And the whole casino thing, I look, I get it
from certain people. Why why they don't make up the
reality is most of those same people. You're still going
to Vegas and gambling, aren't you? Probably? Probably? And you're
not gambling on campus. You're not gambling in the stadium.
That's illegal. That's still the the thing you cannot do.
So it doesn't affect it in that way whatsoever.
Speaker 2 (51:19):
Yeah, it's a catch twenty two, right, But I think
who else is going to do it? Not who else
who's willing to do it, because that's a lot of
still a lot of money over a certain amount of time.
And Tucson is Tucson. You're not going to find those
people out here unless it's a well somewhere else.
Speaker 6 (51:33):
You're not gonna get Amazon to sponsor Arizona Stadium, No, No.
Speaker 3 (51:36):
So I plot for them for doing it to what's
his name? Who's his name?
Speaker 2 (51:40):
Thanks for calling, by the way, thanks, good good justice.
He's right, I mean he's run on every level. If
you're going to start to be I think your big
time start.
Speaker 3 (51:48):
Going in that act like it.
Speaker 2 (51:50):
Yeah yeah yeah, win helps, winning helps and the rest
of it too.
Speaker 3 (51:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (51:55):
Okay, thanks, we got to go seconds thirty seconds Okay,
no thanks guys. Let me say I don't think I'm
going to do a show on Wednesday, and getting the
heads up here because the holidays Wednesday, Thursday, Friday will
be out again.
Speaker 3 (52:06):
Sorry for those who are.
Speaker 2 (52:08):
You know who wanted to hear voices on the air,
except for Chris who send me that text or through Jay.
Speaker 3 (52:16):
Thank you one.
Speaker 2 (52:18):
That means I probably won't see the rest of the week.
Great because you'll be going on YouTube choice Monday. You
see you Monday, see you Friday, Friday. A football game
on Friday, tonight see this night Friday football game, Saturday,
