Breaking down all they says, and ohs. This is I
on the Ball with Steve Rivera on Fox Sports fourteen fifty.

Speaker 2 (00:10):
Hey, welcome back to Why on the Ball Here on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera, you're Jagin Sauce.
Now we have Kobe with breaking news.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
This is I on the Ball, Breaking News on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
Arizona brings back throwback block A helmets for Retro Nite
versus Kansas State. Oh no, Paul Prince stickers on UA
helmets under legends like Chuck Cecil and Rick Hunley.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
You well, I know you can't see this in the
radio show. Jay's raising his arms like in victory. I
think it's cool, and I'm fine with that. Okay, I'm
gonna hear the look good.

Speaker 4 (00:47):
No, no, no, no. On this one.

Speaker 5 (00:48):
You know, these things don't have an impact on the game.
They're just cool, okay. And and that's how I see
this one, you know, And this is a cool thing.

Speaker 4 (00:57):
I'll give you that, you know.

Speaker 5 (01:00):
So, although I will say that, you know, the ACU
helmets last week, those are some of the ugliest things
I've ever seen. They have the big giant sparky head
on the side of the on the side of the
white helmet A the sparky logos. As much as it
pains me to say this, and I'm gonna I feel
like I'm gonna throw up in my mouth a little
bit by saying this, the sparky logo is a really

(01:21):
cool logo, right the you know, and that should always
be on their helmet. That should be their logo, not
that dumb ass spike pitchfork that they have.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
Right the sparky logo is a cool, iconic logo. And
then the things that they do to that are stupid.

Speaker 5 (01:43):
This logo, this block Arizona logo was an iconic logo
for the U of A. I mean, if you remember
Steve when they went to the current A the quote
unquote academic A.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
People were pissed. Yeah, they were really mad.

Speaker 5 (01:59):
You know, people ultimately got used to it, but it
was not met with with you know.

Speaker 4 (02:05):
I don't get reviews, you know, I don't get it.

Speaker 5 (02:07):
But to me that this is fun and it throws
you back to a time once again where people were
feel like there was this magical time when they failed
to remember that they ran Dick Tomy out of town.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Well, no, that's the whole thing, because we talked about
them lot, and you bring it up. It's a revisionist issue.
Oh we got to get you know, seven and four
seven it was not good enough.

Speaker 5 (02:28):
And I know half the half the decade when they
were you know, because that was the logo that came
in with Larry Smith. Okay, so half the decade of
when they were using this logo was Larry Smith's teams
and then the last three teams were Dick Tomy's teams.
But people forget, Oh this logo. It takes us back
to a great time. It wasn't It wasn't a great time.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
Okay. First of all, you were pissed that Dick went four,
four and.

Speaker 5 (02:50):
Three this first season with Arizona coming off a nine
and three season, and then you went seven and four
two years agow, and you weren't happy with that either,
So shut the hell up.

Speaker 4 (02:59):
Well, people remember what they want to remember. I think
this is cool. I like it. Oh it's fun. I'll
give you that. It's fun.

Speaker 3 (03:04):
Arizona football is first three and oh start since twenty
fifteen against Kansas State. Coach Brent Brennan calls the Kansas
State game, a big opportunity for the Wildcats.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
Well that's what that's word.

Speaker 5 (03:15):
That's right, that's the word that Jim that Jim an
opportunity is a great word.

Speaker 2 (03:20):
And I agree, And that's a good way to put it,
because it's true. You go three and oh, you know,
you wait a week or so, and then you go
to Ohowa State and then guess what then you find
out if you're a big boy pants.

Speaker 5 (03:29):
Yeah right, right, so I you know, it is an
opportunity and and and again it's I don't know so
often that Arizona's had opportunities that they haven't well taken advantage.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
But now that you use the word opportunity like Jim did,
do you soften your blow to David Kelly because it's
not that extreme.

Speaker 4 (03:48):
No, it's not.

Speaker 5 (03:48):
It's an opportunity, but it's not like one of the
biggest games in the last ten years.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
Yeah. I still don't agree with that too.

Speaker 5 (03:54):
You know, again, there were there were probably five bigger
games in in twenty was it to years ago?

Speaker 4 (04:00):
Twenty twenty three?

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Yeah, right, because every game was a big game, right,
every game was a big great after that Washington game, right,
So the USC game after all these games. Yeah, okay,
I agree with you World Gender. Today, I'm agreeing with
Jay Okay.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
Arizona women's basketball as Mary Martinez signed with top level
Turkish team. Martinez averaged eight point two points and six
point nine boards last year in France.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
I can't remember what she looked like. Yeah, well you
went to this bunch of the games. You remember me? Hello,
it's I don't remember the name. Do you know why
you're here? Yeah? I do know why I'm here, but
I don't know where I was right before I came here. Yeah,
you have your name on your shortness.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
Forty nine ers qb uh Brock Purty will miss two
to five weeks with a form of turf toe. You
got to change your picts over there, Max Jones will
be in line to start.

Speaker 5 (04:58):
I just you you know, I'm I still can't bring
myself to take the Saints against the Niners on Sunday.
The Niners of minus three at the Saints, and I'm
I looked at it and I thought, party's out. George
Kittle's out. But I don't know that they're gonna lose.
So because the Saints are really bad.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Yeah, The Green Bay Packers host the Washington Commanders on
Thursday Night Football Tonight. Green Bay is a three and
a half point favorite. Yesterday, Jay Feller at ESPN stated
that Jacorey Krossky merrit will eventually be the Commander's lead back.

Speaker 4 (05:31):
Okay, yeah, he's gonna have I think he's have a
solid career. Yeah, we're talking to We were talking during
the break.

Speaker 5 (05:36):
If Airs on the had him last year, things totally
narrative for this season would be totally different. Would have
probably gone to a bowl game last year, right, Arizona
would have gone to a bowl game last year, and
and you know people would thought differently A.

Speaker 4 (05:50):
Brent Bran Sure, no question would they go for They
went four and eight.

Speaker 5 (05:56):
So if they went to two more games, they're six
and six and then a bowl.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
Game and then maybe even seven and five, maybe seven. Yeah, yeah,
I mean, I mean that tells you how much of
a different one.

Speaker 5 (06:05):
Dude, Nikes it can well in that regard because they
had no running game last year and you have this guy,
You've got a running game.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
You know.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
Clemson coach Debo Sweeney revealed he nearly walked away from
college football entirely over the weeks production of Nile Rules.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, well that's going to continue to happen, and that's
going to happen.

Speaker 5 (06:23):
Well of the coaches who have right, you know, Nick Saban,
those guys they left because of that.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
You know, it's partly because the athletes are not making
the money for their neighbors to coach.

Speaker 4 (06:35):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
Brown safety Grand del Pitt, who famously leveled Derrick Henry
last season, doubled down by saying, the six foot three,
two hundred and fifty to two pounds back is not
hard to tackle.

Speaker 4 (06:51):
One of them.

Speaker 5 (06:51):
Suff I wouldn't money hit Derrick Henry with my car, right, No,
he'd wrecked my car.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Yeah, no, dude. Last week Baltimore looked fantastic. They did,
and right before the they have a sixteen to fifty
point later whatever it was, and they were saying, if
you're going to be in an AFC team, do you
want to play these guys? And then they collapse and
then they collapse still but and then a big part
of it was his fumble fumble. But no, I'm not
getting in his way, you know, I'm just not you know,

(07:21):
I don't want him to run into my car, right,
you know, No, I mean I completely agree with that.

Speaker 3 (07:28):
Speaking of the Ravens. Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson will not
face discipline after shoving a Bills fan during Baltimore's Week
one loss.

Speaker 4 (07:36):
No should he?

Speaker 3 (07:37):
No?

Speaker 5 (07:37):
Should he? He should not? He absolutely should not. I
mean he's got to have better judgment than that. He's
got to control himself a little more. But in light
of what happened there, yeah, I would have been disappointed
if he'd have been, because you know what, there comes
a line that gets crossed and that you can't expect
a person to not react to.

Speaker 4 (07:54):
Sure, And conversely, conversely, what they did to the fan
was yeah, ban for life. Good, get the hell out
of here. I act like a human being you've been to.
Just go to a game, enjoy the game, and don't
be a part of the game.

Speaker 3 (08:07):
The NCAA announced that thirteen men's basketball players from six
different schools were involved in gambling schemes, including betting against
their own teams.

Speaker 5 (08:17):
You saw who one of those schools was, did you ye?
Just passing the torch? So yeah, I saw that. And
you know, the discussion is because all these guys, they
weren't blowing games, but what they were doing was was
impacting prop bets and so you know, there's some states
that allow college prop bets and there's some that don't.

(08:39):
Arizona is one that doesn't. But I think they should eliminate.
You know, there should be a national you know, regulation
of some sort of you can't have college prop bets
because those guys, you know, the kid who's not making
a million dollars in revenue and in nil, those guys
are are subject to all of this stuff, and so

(09:02):
I they need to eliminate that.

Speaker 3 (09:05):
The Miami Dolphins held a players only meeting this week
to regroup after a thirty three to eight blowout loss
to the Colts in their season opener.

Speaker 4 (09:13):
Yea, they looked so bad. That's terrible.

Speaker 5 (09:17):
They look so bad. I mean, you lose that by
that to Daniel Jones. Yeah, that was that was Excuse me,
that was awful.

Speaker 3 (09:25):
Yankee shortstop Anthony Volpi received a quartersone shot and for
a partially torn shoulder labram he's been playing through for months.

Speaker 5 (09:34):
Bar for the Yankees, probably Dodgers, Yeah, we dodged had
their own problems.

Speaker 3 (09:43):
Detroit Lions offensive coordinator John Morton said the team is
not in panic mode despite a rough Week one lost
to Green Bay.

Speaker 5 (09:50):
That was a bad loss. They looked bad. They did
not look anything like the last yearline.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Now they faced their former offensive coordinator right Chicago.

Speaker 4 (09:59):
Yeah, but they they look nothing like last year's Lions.

Speaker 3 (10:05):
And you report links Clippers star Kawhi Leonard to a
one point seven five million dollars no show.

Speaker 4 (10:13):
Did you see that? One?

Speaker 5 (10:14):
Another one where they owed him one point some million
dollars and the day before they had to pay him,
somebody put two million dollars into this company and then
they gave him the money.

Speaker 4 (10:26):
What are you guys doing? What price? What price? Victory?
Especially at that level where they've got more money than that.
But the thing, there's rules, guys.

Speaker 5 (10:35):
Just because you got a lot of money doesn't mean
you have you don't have to play by the rules.
And that's what boused me about this is Steve Steve Balmer,
who I think I said, saw the sixth richest guy
in the world, six richest guy in the world, so
therefore rules don't apply to me.

Speaker 4 (10:50):
And I hate that about those guys.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
I hate that that is a Ever today's break, let
me ask you something because this came up again this week.
I guess and Clark Clark and the other guy at
the ESPN. Did you see the back and forth or
at least Clark's ripping over. Yeah, and who was he
fighting with? He fights with a lot of people. Well,
he was given the journalist I forget his name, Peter Scher, Yes,

(11:14):
Peter Sregar, thank you very much, saying that you know what,
what does he know? He's not a former athlete?

Speaker 4 (11:18):
Oh god again.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
Well, and I was gonna bring this up because and
we don't have it here. You know, you and I
are former athletes, but not to the level of significance
I'll say significance. And then you have kind of like
guys coming in like that guy Ricky and the Mott
they give me grief about blah blah blah. But still
last time I checked it. And then not specific to them,
but the Clark and the Schweger guy. Uh, I don't

(11:41):
think Clark has a journalism.

Speaker 5 (11:43):
Yeah, he didn't go journalism school. So what the hell
do you know what in the media? Yeah, exactly, I
hate that.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
Yeah, and you see it more often it's like modern
or Marino Marino. Remember back in the day, they asked
him a question says, how would you know because you
never played the game? Yeah, twenty five thirty years ago.
That's not what his job was to ask questions, write
the story.

Speaker 5 (12:03):
I was never the president of the United States, but
I can ask him what the hell are.

Speaker 4 (12:05):
You doing, right, because that's what your job is, right.

Speaker 5 (12:09):
Right, and and and and you know, and and the
whole you know, the whole thing about some of the
some of these now female uh analysts and stuff like that,
who do a really good job because they study, right,
they look at film, they you know, they.

Speaker 4 (12:24):
They learn the game, you know, or grew.

Speaker 2 (12:27):
Up with you.

Speaker 5 (12:29):
I wasn't a lawyer, but I covered the courthouse as
a reporter. And you know, and you ask the questions,
you get the answers, you get some expertise, and therefore
that doesn't make you an expert, but it makes you
capable of covering and whatever it is.

Speaker 4 (12:47):
And that's why you went to school.

Speaker 5 (12:48):
Yeah, you do that, you get you get that expertise.
You know, what the hell did you know anybody know
about computers before they started working on a lot. You
go learn that and then you you know, you handle it.
Jed Fish, I mean, look at Ted Fish. Guy never
played football. He was a freaking tennis player, right, But
yet Yeah, he learned, he studied, he worked at it,

(13:13):
and he's a major college football coach. Now, whether you
think he's a good one or not is a matter
of opinion. But he was good enough and learned the
game well enough to get to where he is. And
he didn't have to do that by being on the field.
Who was it, Charlie Weiss was never played football, right.

Speaker 4 (13:32):
So you know it's you don't have to you know,
you don't have to do it to know it.

Speaker 2 (13:38):
I don't know why I brought that up, but I
thought it was significant, specially because when those guys say that, yeah,
it pisses me on. He apologized soon after because he
probably realized I'm not shouldn't go there, But I didn't
realize he gets some fights with everybody.

Speaker 4 (13:50):
So, yeah, he's had some disputes with a few people. Okay,
well he's a smart guy. Oh, let's not take a
break and can come back with our guest.

Here's Steve and I.

Speaker 2 (18:42):
So Stephen Jay, I should say, a big weekend for
you coming down and you're the player of the or
a former player of the week, right.

Speaker 12 (18:49):
Honorary captain camp Yes, sir, yes, sir as an honor man.
I appreciate you for calling me and letting me come
back down. It's been a while, man, So I'm Excitedcas.

Speaker 4 (19:00):
What's your what's your lasting?

Speaker 5 (19:02):
When you think about your career at Arizona, what's the
first thing that pops into your head.

Speaker 12 (19:09):
It'll probably just be all the big games that's on
a zoo and a's on a zoo, playing under the
fans that we won, you know, playing at home field,
just making it hard, the games like against USC in
twenty twelve, even Oregon in twenty thirteens. Just all the
big games. Iowa my freshman year in twenty ten to
come down. So just the big games. And that's the
first thing I think about when.

Speaker 2 (19:30):
You look back at your career. How do you look
back and what type of pride or whatever word do
you want to use?

Speaker 12 (19:39):
Just just versatile When I look back in my career,
U of a man. I played a lot of different positions,
did a lot of different things, you know, made a
lot of different plays. Man moved to linebacker man to
help the team and obviously it ended up working out
really good for me.

Speaker 4 (19:57):
But just being versatile man, doing.

Speaker 12 (19:59):
Whatever the team needs to win and made a lot
of good play, a lot of good tackles man or
got a lot a lot of tackles in two years
that linebackers, So did some good things there.

Speaker 5 (20:08):
Man.

Speaker 12 (20:08):
So it's gonna be a it's gonna be a real moment.

Speaker 4 (20:11):
Oh good for you?

Speaker 5 (20:12):
Yeah, yeah, well well you did. I think a lot
of people remember a lot of that stuff. You know.
The one that I that I go back to, and uh,
you know, I'd like you to take us back to
that one. Was that that new Mexico Bull and that comeback,
and you know, you had to pick at the end
of the game and all that stuff to walk us
through a little bit of what was going on on
the sidelines during that game, because you guys were getting

(20:33):
your butt kicked pretty much the whole game.

Speaker 4 (20:35):
And then you come back and win it.

Speaker 5 (20:37):
How, you know, how does the team stay in, you know,
in the moment to be able to come back and
win a game.

Speaker 13 (20:42):
Like that, Oh yeah, like twice or something then twenty
one game back then went down like twenty one again
or or started losing bad again.

Speaker 12 (20:54):
It was just one of those games, man, and you know,
you just got to keep playing. Works really couldn't express that.
You have to out there and make play man, trusting
the trusting the offense. He didn's had to get off
the field a bowl game and they had a really
really good offense. They was making plays and it just
wasn't going our way. It was one of them games
that where it's not going your way. A look at
that adversity through the whole game, and you know, I

(21:14):
think rich Rod prepared us that whole year for a
game like that, and it finally clicked for us, and
at the end man, just being able to seal the game,
get an on side kick, everything kind of starts going
our way all of a sudden. It just keep playing
and it was one of the best games. Craziest games
I think bowl games I've ever been a part of,
but when the craziest game I ever been a part of,
and I'm the happy we came out on top.

Speaker 4 (21:36):
Yeah, yeah, no question. How was it playing for Rinch?

Speaker 2 (21:38):
We've had him on the show a number of times,
not lately, but you see the clips with him going
kind of crazy on the sidelines.

Speaker 4 (21:44):
How was it with him? Oh, you know, it was
good man.

Speaker 12 (21:48):
I love playing for rich Rody, which is like running
for me, because I had to offer for him when
he was at Michigan and I turned it down, and
you know that thought in your head back then it
wasn't like the transfer portal, so when another coach would
come in, I'm thinking if he gonna hold a crude.
I remember having a meeting with him and he am
kind of saying, don't worry. I know that you probably
think because you turned the offer down when all that Michigan,

(22:09):
you know, everything works out for a reason, and you
know it was just like a sigh relief. But I
love playing for Rich rod Man. One of the first
coaches that made me realize. Man, he had me so
in so much shape that you know, I could run
all day. And that's when I had my best seasons
was when when it was under Rich rod Man. It's
still the conditioning proground.

Speaker 6 (22:25):
Was no joke.

Speaker 12 (22:25):
But his model of making us comfortable while being uncomfortable,
it was something that it was something that idiots at
first when it started off there was rough but understood
that went on. Man, I thought that it made us
very tough. It made us a tough team, a little
different from Stut's. I love Steus too. They bought, they
both bought, you know, they both were good coaches for me,

(22:46):
and they bought different things. But you know I thried
under Rich rod Man and I love playing for Rich.

Speaker 4 (22:51):
Rod all right, So Marties, I'm the fan in the room.

Speaker 5 (22:54):
Okay, I've been, you know, I grew up here, been
going to games since I was a little kid. Huge
jers On a football fan. Still am. We've we have
we have a horrible attitude as fans in terms of
we always think the bad stuff is gonna happen to us, right,
We don't ever get to win the huge game. Uh,
it's sort of like we've been beaten down for so
many years that we always we're always waiting for the

(23:16):
bad thing to happen. Is there any of that, you
know in the program, in the in the players. Uh,
you know, do you feel that at all from fans?
You know, what what kind of vibe do you get
as far as that goes?

Speaker 4 (23:31):
You know, the fans.

Speaker 12 (23:32):
I mean one thing about the fans man, you know,
I think I think Arizona has a great man. Like
you said, they we've been through to us, We've been
through the downs. We're not one of those teams like
you know, We're not like the Ohio State Buckeye fantais.
I don't understand guy who's just one game and they're
crying for him to get fired, right, you know, you know,
it just makes no sense to me. But the fan
base is good. But at the same time, we got

(23:53):
to meet them halfway and we just got to put
at further nattitude on the field, and I think Arizona
would be good. Obviously, we had a down year last
year with everything that transpire after having a great year,
so you know, the emotions were playing with the emotions
a little bit. But for the fans, I would just say, man,
just keep believing and keep and keep coming, and hopefully
many they're part of the reason this program could turn

(24:13):
around and become a powerhouse program. I'm always gonna have
faith in you, obey.

Speaker 4 (24:17):
Yeah, yeah, it makes sense.

Speaker 2 (24:18):
But what to Jay's point, and we do the show
with the Huntleyes, right, and I said, like last week
they played Weaver State, you expected to win that game.
So I'm sure there was a few games in your
in your time here where you guys just laid an
in again for no reason, you just did, and then
the next week you came up big against some team
that you shouldn't have won or shouldn't beat them.

Speaker 12 (24:38):
Sorry, I mean yeah, yeah, there's always games like that.
If every honestly is every given Saturday, you just never know.
Every every situation different, every game plan is different. Sometimes
teams have a good game plan for even like I said,
adversity happens, and how do we have the adversity that week?
I think it was the other way around. Oh, I
think it was. Yeah, it was the other way around,
or maybe it was I'll never forget my it was

(25:00):
my senior year where we lose a game we opted like,
we shouldn't have lost to Washington State, and it was
just like, man, we lose the game of Washington State
and we got organ coming in next week.

Speaker 4 (25:10):
Right remember that?

Speaker 12 (25:11):
So yeah, So then it's like it's like you go
back and lat that Washington State game. We shouldn't have
lost that game. But you know that a team han't
getting there. Sometimes everything will go your way, the diversity happens.
You got to find a way to finish that game
and sometimes come short. That's why he loved college football, Right,
it's crazy on Saturdays.

Speaker 5 (25:26):
You know, it's crazy that you brought that one up
because I was looking for I know there was one
of those you know where you guys one way or
the other, right, you won a big game and then
lost a game you should have won or vice versa
in what order, And I remember that it was that
one you guys lost to Washington State and we're like, what.

Speaker 4 (25:41):
The hell are you guys doing?

Speaker 5 (25:43):
And we all wears on the stadium that day, and
I'm like, I hope we don't piss them off so
much that they beat the hell out of us. And
then you guys crushed their skulls, and it was it
was crazy to see that game. And and you know,
and again, as Arizona fans, we're sitting there, you guys
are up three touchdowns and we're still waiting for them
to come back and beat you guys, because that's what

(26:04):
they do, and that's what happens to.

Speaker 4 (26:06):
Arizona and they never did.

Speaker 5 (26:08):
And and I just it's always I don't know, it
stunned me that those two different things like that can
happen from one week.

Speaker 4 (26:17):
To the next.

Speaker 12 (26:19):
Yeah. Absolutely, I think college football the biggest difference. I mean,
I want to say the biggest differen because in everything,
but with college football, one of the biggest things is momentum.
And I think if a team catches momentum, it's almost
like man, they catch fire. It's almost like hey, like
like you better stop this momentum. The crowd is in
it now, the team knows they have momentum, and momentum.
When a team gets momentum and they just keep piling on,

(26:41):
it's hard. It's hard to stop them. So I think
a little that plays a huge that plays a huge
factor into these games. But it's always nice playing at home, man,
So I'm excited to see our GUIDs this week at
home against to the Kansas State team that obviously lay
the egg last week. It feels like they laid egg.
So this is gonna be a tough game, but it's

(27:02):
a great test for the U of A. And they
look good.

Speaker 1 (27:05):
Man.

Speaker 12 (27:05):
I'm excited to see them on Friday night.

Speaker 4 (27:07):
Yeah, what do you make of this team?

Speaker 12 (27:11):
Well, we gonna We're gonna find out. It's early right now.
We won the game. We won the game, whether we're
the favorite, whether we feel like we should have won,
we won it and we didn't dominating, and that's how
it was supposed to be won. It wasn't one of
those things where we struggled and barely won, even with
a team that we should have won. It was one
of the things that came out there rolling. They're hot,
they got the momentum. Because I don't care what team
it is, it's hard to win football game, especially at

(27:32):
that level, at the college level. It's hard to win
football games. I don't care who you plan. Like I said,
sometimes these teams have great game plan. Things happen at
versity all that. We just got to stay healthy, keep playing,
stick together, and then it'll be a full one on
Friday night, and before they win, the more relevant they'll get.
The bigger, the bigger, the bigger the games game.

Speaker 2 (27:50):
So you've been on the show with us before, and
I don't know if we've asked you this, because we
asked this of former players and coaches. So when you're
at the game, just maybe at the couch at the house,
but now tomorrow in person, how do you watch it?
How do you watch it as a former player or
as a fan?

Speaker 12 (28:07):
Well, I can't get it out when you when you
play and you you you've studied the game so much,
and you play it and you've been around some of
the greatest coach and study game. Automatically, you're gonna watch
it as a player. You know who messed up on
that player or or or who gave up that play?
What covers are they in? Your brain starts working like that.
But I want to watch the defend enjoy. Obviously in
the game of football, they're gonna make some play. We're
gonna make some plays. We just want to make more

(28:29):
bigger plays than they do. Get the crowd into a game,
the momentum, and we want to walk off the field
with a w That's all that really matters. But I'm
definitely gonna probably watch it as a player.

Speaker 4 (28:38):
Do you get frustrated? Dude? That should have you know,
how do I play it? I would have got that.

Speaker 12 (28:43):
You know what I'm saying you, I think that's in
every competitor's head. I try not to say it too much.
I'm just my time now. I'm wondering where a time went.
You know, my son is coming up there with me,
and I had him when I was the UVA thirteen
years I'm looking at him like we're it thirteen years ago.
But you do look at as better. But I use
it at the moment to teach my thing. Players use football,

(29:04):
just trying to teach him. And you know, you don't
want to get down on the player because you know,
sometimes I've been on the field. I'm sure if I
go watch them on myself now with the nods, I
know I'll say why did I make that player? Damn?
Or why didn't you make that something like that? So
it happens. The game speech is, you know, the biggest
thing is just keep cheering, encouraging them to make the
next play.

Speaker 5 (29:22):
Yeah, so let me ask you this as a fan, right,
what do you what do you like the league that
Arizona is in? Do you like the Big twelve and
the you know, I know, you know, we all long
for the history and all that of the Pac twelve
and stuff like that, But do you like this league
and the teams that are in it and the teams
that Arizona has to play?

Speaker 4 (29:41):
You know nowe that we've been through it for a
year and starting a second.

Speaker 12 (29:46):
Yeah, I'm not.

Speaker 1 (29:48):
I'm not.

Speaker 12 (29:48):
It has to grow on me a little bit. I'm
a big time I'm a big time packed ten Pac
twelve guy. I've always liked the Pac ten packs, So
I couldn't believe when it's had the conference was gonna
basically to spend whatever over. I don't think they should
have let that happen. In my opinion, it was the
second best conference that could have been, you know, rival
to the Bad Conference after it disbanded. The Big twelve

(30:10):
has a lot of teams, but I noticed about the
Big Twelve it's a lot of it's a lot of
high talent offenses in the Big Twelve. By the air
raid lit up that fault. That's what I thought about
the Big Twelve. Obviously, Lucas Texans in Oklahoma. But these
other the teams that we're playing, it's a lot of
good teams. I'll see a lot of good teams coming
up from the PAC twelve. I mean, it's definitely a challenging,
challenging conference to win. It's definitely a challenging conference win

(30:33):
the challenge is there. I mean, I'm just a pack
I'm a I'm an old school I don't like the
new era stuff. So I'm an old school guy. Can't
change it. I'd rather it be PAC twelve. I'd rather
still be PAC twelve. I think it would have been
better if the Big twelve teams kind of just person
came over to the PAC twelve. If that is me.
I'm kind of biased on that, But you know, I
don't think the boys mind college is. You know, there's

(30:53):
colleges all over. There's gonna be a good competition regardless,
and the goal is to win. To win in the conference.

Speaker 4 (31:00):
I'm sure some more keys. You're gonna have your son
here tomorrow.

Speaker 2 (31:04):
You're gonna probably walk through the stadium, we know, maybe
walk on campus, walk to the stadium. You know, Son,
I used to walk these halls. I have fifteen tackles
then you actually had you know, ten did your your
stories getting bellished a little?

Speaker 12 (31:19):
Yeah, he was there. He probably don't remember because he
was real young, but I'll try not to do so.
But he knows. I think he rode the visible but
he did that age is better than me, which is good.
I want him to be better than me at the sport,
but I want to have a good time. Want him
to see that, see that experience man, and hopefully I'd
like to fire on him to try to get to college.
Hopefully you will be Are.

Speaker 5 (31:39):
You okay, you're gonna walk on the field tomorrow? It's
an ass for turf field. Are you an aswal turf guy?

Speaker 4 (31:43):
Do you like that? Or would you you played when
it was grass? I mean which which do you prefer?

Speaker 8 (31:49):
You know?

Speaker 12 (31:50):
I'm I'm a tight that. I don't mind either or
The turf does look nice nowadays with the technology, the
turf is a lot there than what he used to be. Right,
I didn't play on the turf field, but the turf
is actually nice. It doesn't bother me. I know a
lot of guys say it hurt. They needs they rather real.
Grass I actually like turf. I felt a little faster
on turf I did. I honestly felt a little faster
on turf, a little bit more bounty. I felt a

(32:11):
little faster on her, so I prefer her.

Speaker 4 (32:13):
All right, what are you up to these days?

Speaker 12 (32:17):
Uh, just just working, just working on my health and
then helping my sons use football team, helping kids just
play tackle football in the right way, understanding it is
a dangerous game and you don't play it the right way.
Helping them with a little bit of technique and whatnot,
and you know, just just going into got into it
like that, starting to you know, starting to give my entries. Obviously,

(32:39):
like I said, I'm getting older. I don't know where
the time went. Just turn and looking, I'm already thirty
three years old, and it's saying thirteen years ago and
fourteen years ago. I didn't realize it was that long
ago that I played at you today. So just kind
of enjoy enjoyed this chapter.

Speaker 2 (32:55):
Do you look back and say, God, I was fifteen
years too early given the nil?

Speaker 12 (33:00):
Yeah, yeah, and I do. All this stuff is crazy now,
But I am happy for the players. I would never
That's what we did it for back when we played
was for them, this kind of love. But yeah, I
don't let it creep in my head. And what I
would have done with an idea and if I would
to transfer and all that, I'm just different, man. It
was it was, it was, it was sacred to transfer.

(33:20):
It was almost big dudes, like, you're gonna sit out
a whole year, you really going transfer. So it was
one of those things. So times had changed. I never
thought I'll turn into my parents, but I guess I'll
turn into my parents. I guess I'm that old head
guy that's just sitting there like in my day.

Speaker 4 (33:33):
Back in my day, it doesn't take long to do that, right, right.

Speaker 2 (33:37):
Okay, Well we'll see, we'll take care and we'll see
you tomorrow. Have fun, enjoy your son, your time with
your son.

Speaker 4 (33:43):
Thanks you.

Speaker 12 (33:43):
I appreciate thank you for having me.

Speaker 4 (33:44):
Thank you. We'll have you back to Thank you. Mary.

Speaker 5 (33:47):
Good guy, Yeah, good guy. And the guy who kind
of not overachieved, but he was. He was a damn
good He was one of those players that he thought
he kind of almost came out of nowhere, right, He's
just kind of a grinder kind of guy, and then
all of a sudden he was really good. Yeah, and
then had a nice little career in the NFL. Does
it sounds like he's got to have a job or anything.

Speaker 4 (34:09):
Man, Not that this is the job, but that'd be
kind of cool. Who will you again on the show today? Damn,
I don't know what, I don't know. Just take a break,
come back.

Speaker 2 (34:18):

Streamy live on the iHeartRadio WAB. This is I on

Speaker 2 (38:21):
Eight and welcome back to I on the Ball here
on Fox Sports fourteen fifty I'm Steve Rivera. You're Jenkins
as we got my guy Kobe here waiting for calls
if we get one. But now is our time to
fix your picks.

Speaker 4 (38:35):
All right.

Speaker 5 (38:37):
Just to recap last week, I didn't sorry I didn't
post the post the graphic, but we both had two points,
both had two wins and three losses. We both had
the bills and hit that. My other game I hit
was shoot, I can't even remember. But anyways, so so
we're still basically the same place we were a week

(38:58):
before when Steve got three point lead on me by
getting a perfect week in the first week. So it's
what seven to eight, eight to five? Yeah, eight to five?

Speaker 4 (39:09):
All right.

Speaker 5 (39:10):
So our special game this week is Georgia Tennessee. So
we both got to pick that one. And so, yeah,
you didn't pick that one, no idea. Okay, all right,
I'll go first. So you went first last week. So
I'm going through college. I'm getting on the Oregon bandwagon.
Maybe a little late, but I'm getting on it. I

(39:32):
mean there, I just you know, they're just they're mean,
they they're just what. They were one ten a minute
ten into the game last week and they were up
by two touchdowns against Oklahoma State. I mean it was
thirteen fifty left in the first quarter and they were
up by two touchdowns. That was crazy. So I'm they're

(39:55):
giving twenty seven and a half at Northwestern on Saturday,
so I want to take twenty seven and a half.
I like it that it's under four touchdowns, so I'm
taking that. So I'm taking Oregon minus the twenty seven
and a half at Northwestern.

Speaker 4 (40:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (40:10):
When I picked him, it was last week, right, Yeah,
And you said, I don't know about the twenty eight
against them. I said, after them kind of going back
and forth early in the week.

Speaker 4 (40:17):
I said, he's going to leave a wood up and
god they did. That was awful. Yeah, Okay, that game
may get what's his name fired?

Speaker 5 (40:26):
You know that about that yesterday? Yeah, he's not the
same coach he used to He's not. He had a
he had what do you go, three and three and
nine last year something like that. A game like that
gets you fired, you know, thinking of that seventy to
seven ASU loss to Arizona and that got that. I
don't think someone was going to get fired that year

(40:47):
until that game, and so I think that can happen.
But again, I'm on, I'm gonna get on that Bandwagon
while it's still early.

Speaker 2 (40:55):
Okay, I was that was a game I was gonna
pick it. I am no longer going to pick that game. Ye,
not for that reason, but it was one of my pigs. No,
I'm not gonna do that, all right, I don't want
to get jinxed. So I'm gonna go with Texas Tech.

Speaker 4 (41:10):
I I had Texas Tech and I replaced it with
the Oregon game.

Speaker 2 (41:14):
Okay, so I'm going to Texas Tech. I got to
see who they played, Oregon State. Okay, yeah, that's like
a twenty three and a half.

Speaker 4 (41:20):
I think at home. Must be yet it's twenty three
and a half at home on Saturday after.

Speaker 5 (41:25):
Yeah, I had that on my list and then I
took it off and put Oregon on there. Okay, so
Texas Tech.

Speaker 4 (41:29):
So either way, you're jinxed.

Speaker 5 (41:31):
No, No, you had count all right. This next game
is my lock. They've had a couple of weeks to
get ready for this. Uh they're at home. It's a
home opener. I'm taking Notre Dame, giving uh six and
a half to Texas A and m oh take it back.
Nor Dame played last week. I I was thinking there
was a week a week gap. But the giving it's

(41:53):
I like the I like it that it's less than seven.
I just think, you know, at home, at home, home,
you know, I mean they they they played a good
game against Miami, could have won that game. That was
a tough environment for them to play, and they're hungry
for a win. I think I ain't gonna take care

(42:13):
of Texas. Ay name at home, Okay, and I'm locking that. Wow, Okay,
I like that pick for the other side, Okay, go ahead.
Maybe I'm not picking that game, go ahead, Okay.

Speaker 2 (42:26):
So I'm only picking two college games, so I'll have
to wait for the Tennessee drink. So my first pro
game is gonna be Buffalo. They survived and saved me
last week. I was already I was already lamenting. I said,
how can that guy go perfect one week and go
zero for the yeah next week? So but I'm gonna
go with Buffalo.

Speaker 4 (42:46):
There. You know what they're not.

Speaker 2 (42:48):
How can I say that they're not loaded like Baltimore is.
But they have hit the magic guy, the quarterback, and
he found people, he got stuff done, and I'm not
sure that's going to carry him to a super Bowl.

Speaker 4 (42:59):
But they're they're fun. To watch. I like that game.
I like that pick.

Speaker 5 (43:04):
I didn't. I didn't take it because I looked at
that camera out. That's that game that you think is easy.

Speaker 4 (43:11):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (43:12):
Yeah, and the Jets are going to do something stupid
like keep it closer even win the game.

Speaker 4 (43:16):
Well that's what they did last week with the Steelers, right,
and I and I hate that. Yeah, I hate losing
the game like that where you think this was an
easy pick.

Speaker 2 (43:24):
After an emotional high, I thought about all that. I'm
still gonna go with him because I did. The Jets suck.

Speaker 4 (43:30):
Well, sorry, sorry, I forgot what have in the room.
I don't believe in like.

Speaker 3 (43:35):
When you lose, you should be celebrating. But I am
happy about what I saw last week from the offense,
the defense.

Speaker 4 (43:42):
And not look good. But justin fields look good. Yeah right,
but those will win. Jets might get the cover at
the sixth. It's a six year. I was surprised. They
they kicks and a half.

Speaker 2 (43:52):
They cover with Steelers. They didn't cover, right, they covered?
They lost by two? Yeah, I think they covered covered. Yeah,
the Steelers were favored by more.

Speaker 4 (44:00):
All right, okay, yeah, I'll go.

Speaker 5 (44:03):
I'll go over to the my NFL games, and I'm
kind of holding my nose on this one. Two teams
who had a bad week last week. I just kind
of believe that the Lions are better than what they
showed us.

Speaker 4 (44:15):
I hate you. I hate you. When you said that,
I already know who you. So I'm taking the Lions
and giving the six to the Bears.

Speaker 2 (44:25):
Well, guess what, I'm doing the same thing for that
reason too, because unless I'm clouded from last year's season
with Detroit that they'll eventually rebound from their not so
good game last week, unless, of course, the Packers are
are really good and just beat the crap out of them.

Speaker 4 (44:40):
But uh, and the Bears, they looked okay, okay, Well
they should have won the games. Yeah, they should have.
They should have won that game.

Speaker 2 (44:48):
And don't I think that Detroit's way better enough not
to go zero two to.

Speaker 4 (44:53):
Stout the season? Right? Yeah, and then again the Lions
at home.

Speaker 2 (44:57):
I can already imagine what you're gonna pick next, because
I think it's the same game when you said that.

Speaker 5 (45:02):
Vikings. Oh no, no, okay, I'm taking the Vikings again.
They're you know, they they got a big road win,
come from behind. They feel good about themselves a lot
of bounce in their step, and now they're opening it.
They're opening at home and uh against against the Falcons,
and the Falcons lost a game that they should have

(45:22):
won at home. I I hate the fact that I'm
going against John Robinson here because I really like him
and I want him to have a great career. But
I think he's on a bad team.

Speaker 4 (45:31):
Well, he has a great career.

Speaker 5 (45:33):
You left to this game. Yeah, so I'm going Vikings
at home. They're giving three and a half to the Falcons.
I wish that was two and a half, but I'll
take the three of the number. The game like that,
you think that they would be yeah, maybe five.

Speaker 4 (45:45):
But you know, especially in the last week.

Speaker 5 (45:46):
Yeah, and it's maybe one of those things where they've
JJ McCarthy just doesn't give him the mojo yet.

Speaker 4 (45:53):
Was there a story on him?

Speaker 2 (45:54):
Is he okays he's I thought I saw something Brock
Purdy has hurt. No, McCarthy's really just Google sometimes, don't know,
not that he wants to change. I'm going with the Vikings, Okay.
I got the Vikings minus three and a half. So
I thought that when you talked about two teams that
playing so well I knew that you were going to
go with Detroit because I was one of them.

Speaker 5 (46:12):
Cincinnati. Well, I was saying in Detroit and the Bears. Yeah, okay,
so pissed me off. They're dead to me right now
because a couple of weeks.

Speaker 2 (46:19):
Yeah, yeah, so I'm gonna go with him now because one,
they're better than that.

Speaker 4 (46:23):
They have to be. I think they were. I don't
know if they were.

Speaker 2 (46:28):
They were, they were my lock, and I thought there
was a good pick. And they kind of like played
with their food the whole game.

Speaker 5 (46:32):
All game, all game, and it pissed me off because
on top of everything else, Joe Burrows my quarterback.

Speaker 2 (46:37):
And they almost lost. And then they almost lost. Yeah,
actually you should have lost, just to just to make
it worse. But yeah, I'm picking them to win this week,
you know.

Speaker 5 (46:45):
And then there was that there was that stat that
that that Burrow has not won, had not won an
opener like ever in his career, and I and I thought, okay,
this is the year that he busts that because it's
the Browns and they're terrible and and and he didn't, well,
they won.

Speaker 4 (47:02):
He broke it, but he didn't break it for me
because he didn't cover so and he's dead to me
right now.

Speaker 3 (47:07):
Steve McCarthy miss Vikings practice Thursday due to birth of
his son.

Speaker 4 (47:12):
Okay, so he's gonna come out. He's gonna come out
and one one from the boy.

Speaker 5 (47:18):
Figure it out for you, and then got birthday, We
got we got to take the Georgia Tennessee game.

Speaker 4 (47:26):
This is difficult to me, It.

Speaker 18 (47:28):
Was, it was.

Speaker 4 (47:29):
I went back and forth on it again.

Speaker 5 (47:32):
And again came down to the thing that I've talked
about before, which which team will I be less pissed
off if they lose? And so I thought if or
will be more pissed off if they You know what
I'm saying is that I feel like, if I take
Georgia and they lose, I'll say, well, it was still

(47:53):
a good pick. But if I take Tennessee thinking Georgia
should win and they lose, they'll be really mad at
myself for not taking Georgia.

Speaker 4 (48:00):
So I'm taking Georgia minus the three and a half.

Speaker 2 (48:03):
So this is what your friends text you about, because
you kind of like sit the fence and then you
top over one side, then you go to the other side.

Speaker 4 (48:14):
I can get it.

Speaker 5 (48:14):
Yeah, I just again, I will be I will be
less pissed off if Georgia loses and I missed the game.

Speaker 4 (48:22):
Go go ahead and go ahead, No, no, no, just
hold on real quick. I'm going with Tennessee. You're going
to Tennessee.

Speaker 2 (48:26):
I've got three and a half at home. He yes, okay,
three and a half a home. We've got a call
real quick. You will take the call. Hello, you're on
the air, and nine the ball?

Speaker 12 (48:35):
You there? You there?

Speaker 4 (48:38):
You there is he there, he is.

Speaker 9 (48:43):
There.

Speaker 2 (48:44):
Okay, just give it. We have oh we got five minutes.
Give us quick call back. We'll take the call because
we're done with our picks.

Speaker 4 (48:50):
All right, So we're on the opposite sides of the
special good yea, Tennessee is getting three and a half
at home. I just think you're be're on there.

Speaker 12 (49:00):
Hey how about my Browns there?

Speaker 8 (49:03):
Jay?

Speaker 12 (49:05):
Well they didn't win, okay, so there, well they should
have won.

Speaker 4 (49:11):
I can't believe.

Speaker 12 (49:12):
And you know what's terrible is we don't get to
see the.

Speaker 4 (49:16):
The games here in Arizona for the Cleveland or Cincinnati
for that matter.

Speaker 12 (49:22):
But if I'm not mistaken, I got the points.

Speaker 4 (49:28):
Yep, yep, glad they covered last week?

Speaker 12 (49:31):
Did Yes?

Speaker 4 (49:33):
I know, and I'm very happy about that.

Speaker 2 (49:35):
So you you guys in Cleveland, you guys are very
happy for a game that you are just covered.

Speaker 12 (49:41):
Hey, listen, it's the Browns. I still love them.

Speaker 4 (49:48):
It's been a tough life, sir. I watched Draft Day yesterday.
I thought the Browns were going to be really good.

Speaker 12 (49:54):
Yeah, well okay, Well Kevin Costner is not the GA.

Speaker 4 (50:01):
Anyway.

Speaker 12 (50:02):
So are we gonna double up on the Browns? And
you're gonna give me what thirteen and a half against Baltimore?

Speaker 4 (50:09):
Well, that's right, I bet him, didn't I what I
owe you? Yes, ten bucks? I owe you ten bucks.

Speaker 12 (50:15):
I thought it was one hundred.

Speaker 5 (50:16):
No, I know it wasn't one hundred. So I didn't
even do that on DraftKings. Okay, you got the Browns
minus with the eleven, and I'll give you eleven and
a half. We'll go double hing on that. It's in Baltimore.
I'll give you eleven and a half. That's the line.

Speaker 4 (50:31):
Is that good?

Speaker 2 (50:34):
Uh?

Speaker 4 (50:34):
Thirteen and a half?

Speaker 5 (50:35):
Oh no, no, no, no, no, no, no, eleven and
a half is the number? Well let me okay, let
me see what the latest number is. If it's still
eleven and a half. That's all I'm giving you, because
that could have changed because that line was from yesterday.

Speaker 4 (50:48):
Let me see you could choose let me shoot you
like a market. Seriously, man, come on, let me see.

Speaker 12 (50:56):
I can't beat you poker, Steve.

Speaker 4 (50:59):
You're not betting me, You're betting James.

Speaker 5 (51:01):
Yeah, exactly. It's still eleven and a half. So that's
that's all I'm giving you. Come on, take it, let's go.

Speaker 2 (51:09):
You know what you Steve, I'll take it because I
think Baltimore is gonna be pissed.

Speaker 5 (51:14):
Yeah, and scored okay, okay, double or nothing on ten
bucks for eleven and and I'm giving you eleven and
a half.

Speaker 4 (51:20):
All right, and Steve to guy, we both got it
all right? Man, there we go.

Speaker 2 (51:28):
Thanks for the calls, have fun. Yeah, thanks to see
you tomorrow or sometimes soon. We allowed to gamble on
the air like that we do.

Speaker 4 (51:37):
Our callers. I guess all right. As long as I forgot,
I forgot I had that was that was bad. It
was bad. We're good, though, Are we good to go?
We got time?

Speaker 2 (51:51):
We go?

Speaker 4 (51:52):
Okay, So did you make did you Oh you need
to lock a game? Oh? Did I lock that? You
didn't lock a game man Texas. Okay, okay, I'll try
and get the graphic up there. Did you say about
Arizona tomorrow? Did you I think.

Speaker 5 (52:09):
Arizona wins, so do I I said that yesterday. I
said that yesterday. I think they're gonna win. I guess
it's gonna be a close game. It's gonna be a
hard game. I don't think anybody's gonna blow anybody out.

Speaker 2 (52:17):
I think I don't. They lose, and depends how they lose.
I could be disappointed in what I see. Yeah, because
hearing them from the Kansas guy, Yeah, they just don't
look like they're into it or whatever it is. Right,
I'm going to Arizona tomorrow. Probably less than a touchdown
maybe something like that.

Speaker 5 (52:33):
Yeah, low scoring game, low scoring game, well, I mean
like a yeah, I think whatever the over under is,
I think you take the under.

Speaker 4 (52:43):
Thanks Kobe, thank you all right, man, Thanks to you
see tomorrow,
