Speaker 1 (00:01):
Breaking down all the X is a ohs. This is
Eye on the Ball with Steve Rivera on Box Sports
sporteen fifty.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Hey, welcome back to I Have the Ball here a
Fox Sports fourteen fifty.

Speaker 3 (00:14):
I'm Steve Rivera.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
You or Dave Silver, anybody want to call, please do
five to two zero four one, six seventy four forty.

Speaker 3 (00:21):
I'm not gonna really have breaking news. We just could
have talked more about sports sports.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
You were talking about this, I don't know on the
air off here, I don't remember anything anymore. But the
injury is going on in the NFL.

Speaker 4 (00:33):
It's typical. I mean it's kind of crazy the NFL.
Every every weekend, it seems like some quarterback is going
down and season ending injuries. The running back for the
Cardinals yesterday, John Connor turned up his ankles.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Yeah, pretty bad.

Speaker 4 (00:46):
They're they're just saying severe, so that could be like
dislocated or broken.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
I mean he's there starting running back.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Uh Bosa out as well, Yeah, Bosa who There's a
bunch of them. There's a bunch of them, so we'll
see what happens.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:01):
About even in basketball, Fred van vliet Al, I saw
that he's like their best player for the what is
on the.

Speaker 3 (01:09):
Houston they were an upcoming team coming out Houston. About
Bruce Pearl stepping down is huge of Auburn. Huge.

Speaker 2 (01:18):
In fact, I did a quick little post on Facebook,
like as old men usually do, that they player was
one of the sixth of December. The game is not
going to be as hyped as it would have been.
And his son is now the coach, or at least
the interim coach. But and and he and UH and
Tommy are pretty good friends. I mean that's how the
game started. Yeah, they convinced each other, or at least

(01:40):
I think it was Bruce Pearl. I think I'm correct
with this, Bruce. If you're listening that Bruce talked to Tommy,
he said, why don't you come on this trip with
us or or the same kind of trip to when
they went to overseas to Israel. I thought they took
that trip two three years ago. So it was it
was with with on the advice of Bruce Pearl.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
You know, he was pretty good on ESPN too.

Speaker 4 (02:02):
Yeah, you know see this being you know, I know
he wants to step away and he made some comments
even about running for a office or running for some
us s.

Speaker 3 (02:10):
Like, no, he's very good at that.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
So he was, he was good on he's a good,
good talker. Yeah, and not a surprise. I mean these coaches,
a lot of them are stepping away, you know, get
to their mid sixties. They've been through it all and
the whole nil and revenue sharing world is new to them.

Speaker 2 (02:25):
So not a surprise, right, No, no, and you will
continue to see more and more of that, at least
of the of the of the generation that we grew
up in.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Yeah, you know, the same he's sixty five.

Speaker 4 (02:36):
Yeah, so I mean, you know, the coach k is
that whole that whole group is kind of just you know,
sliding out.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Well the next ones are are the Rick Barnes. Yeah,
self is not sixty sixty one. I think he might
be out there too, And there's just a few of
them left. A Patino obviously seventy two c three.

Speaker 4 (02:55):
You wonder why he's stucking around but making so much
money themselves. Yeah, I think I guess I balance. So
I'm making you know, five million.

Speaker 2 (03:01):
Well you know, I deal with and that's on the
light side. Five million these days, that's cheap. That's a cheap.
Date by the way, whose birthday is it today? Happy birthday,
Coach Olson. Yeah, yeah, would have been ninety one. We said, yeah, yeah,
passed away five years ago last month. But it seems

(03:23):
so not so long ago to me.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Now.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Yeah, my book on him came out three years ago.
But about this time, I'm starting to see my lessons
from lude. Yeah, my my memories of when it came out.

Speaker 4 (03:34):
What are some of the top lessons you can think
of just off the top of your head from your
own book.

Speaker 2 (03:38):
Oh god, that's good. That's a good question. But that's
a tough couple. Uh. We love fancy restaurants, really, you
know the guys.

Speaker 3 (03:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Well it's funny because one of the stories that didn't
make the list was Damon Stottamayer and you know this
kid from Portland who turned on to his fantastic player. Uh,
they go to these fancy restaurants, you know, because you
were on the They go to the nice, nice places,
and sometimes I would eat in the same location, stay
in the best hotels.

Speaker 3 (04:06):
He said, I.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Didn't know how to use Uh, I didn't know how
to use the fourth spoon or in terms of where
to put it, you know, which was where where to go?
But typically the guys didn't want to eat in those places.
They wanted to eat in the fast food places just
because they didn't want to eat steak and lobster, you
know what I'm saying, all the fancy stuff, but things
like that just kind of they found out more about themselves, uh,

(04:30):
in these things, because they didn't know about it growing up.

Speaker 4 (04:32):
I mean, I think one of the things I think about,
as just we're reminiscing here is just how classy he was,
you know. I mean he wasn't going to take the
kids to to Wendys or in McDonald's. He was going
to take I think in a way he was showing
these kids who maybe grew up in situations where that
is what they were eating at home.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Hey, you know what, we're in Marina del Ray.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
We're gonna go to a nice restaurant and Bobby Boddy
wouldn't let them be there.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Exactly the biggest.

Speaker 4 (04:53):
Part of coming to college, you know, and here they
get these great advantages and traveling the world, you know,
traveling on the country with his coach who's you know,
he is a good leader of that.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Yeah, there was so many. In fact, Mike Montgomery said
the same thing. You know, he was like a statesman
just to you walk into the room, you knew who
it was, right, got this presence about him.

Speaker 4 (05:15):
And still you know, you're part of that fantasy camp,
you know, every August, and you know it's it's cool
just to see, you know, the guy's just come back.
I mean he's been gone now for five years and
they're still coming back.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
Yeah, Pete loves him obviously, Harvey Mason, Kenny Lofton Selim's
back here now, and just so many things. And you
were there two years ago, I think, being the MC right,
and you heard the stories. It was just you know,
stuff like Andy Brown, he says, I was at the bottom,
at the end of the bench and and he'd give
him the gum, you know, give him the gum or
the popker, whatever you need, whatever you need.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
Yeah, I mean it's good.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
I mean, you know, Sean Elliott, I don't know how
much family he even has left here, but he comes
back every.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Once in a while. Yeah, he was here just a
couple of weeks ago.

Speaker 4 (05:55):
Yeah, like I said, he was here what a year
ago from the in the fantasy camp.

Speaker 3 (06:00):
I mean, how awesome is that?

Speaker 4 (06:02):
Just showing respect and he wants to come back and
see his old buddies and just come back to his hometown.

Speaker 3 (06:07):
It's nice.

Speaker 2 (06:08):
Yeah, So yeah, Lois and so many yeah, so many,
so many of them from you know, even Ras and
in his time with him and even how it ended,
he had a lot of respect for him. You know,
it's cool that you know his His granddaughter is an
assistant coach with yea with with the Wildcats now, so
she'll be you know, on her. I just got to

(06:28):
have her on. She's I've had her on before, yep,
miss Brosi. Well, and I've known her since well, we've
known her since she was a little kid. She she
was goring points at Kelly right, right, So there's that.
Anybody want to have a memory, just keep us a
quick call. Five two, four, one, six, seventy. There's so
many in the book, twenty five chapters of stuff. Uh,

(06:49):
you know, Reggie coach with him here, played for him here,
coach for him.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (06:54):
That coaching tree is pretty pretty wild, pretty spread out
still right.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yeah, Well, you got Josh at Vegas, you got a Bibbie,
a player at Sacramento.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
Sacramento stage should.

Speaker 4 (07:06):
Say, you got my old friend Jesse, who's now won
an assistant coach or the Sons.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Yeah, I think so. Jessein Murmeys. Yeah, you say, buddy,
you just played basketball with him? Oh okay, okay. You
would show up and he was good. He was the
j here in town.

Speaker 4 (07:20):
He's a Tucson guy, and he would show up and
he would he would just school us.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
I mean he was so he was young.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
Yeah, of course I'm out there only in my you know,
fifty and he's twenty.

Speaker 3 (07:30):
He played at South Point too.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Then you have Luke who's at Detroit, Luke Waltlam yep.
You have Brett Breelmeyer. I don't know where he's at,
but he's still coaching. Joseph did you mention Joseph Joseph
Blair whos in Houston with the with the Vipers, and
Josh and there's so many other ones probably, and then
the broadcasters, you know, oh, just as me right, you
get Meal Buck, Sean Elliott, Sean Elliott, you get Corey Williams, Williams, well,

(07:58):
Steve was obviously coaching when you missed.

Speaker 3 (08:00):
Josh was broadcasting, but now he's back to coach.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
And then of course Steve at the Golden State doing
his stay with Bruce Frasier, Tom Tomart has his own
podcast cast.

Speaker 4 (08:10):
Still, yeah, we need to get keep up with Josh
here as he resumes his coaching career, checking with him
maybe like in December and.

Speaker 3 (08:17):
See how things are going.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
Yeah, and he also took a player from Arizona, or
at least welcome to a player from Arizona.

Speaker 3 (08:22):
Stevens.

Speaker 2 (08:23):
Oh, yeah, the big guy. So we'll see what happens.
I wish him well, I kind of. I don't know
if I told him this on or off the air,
but I said, you had a pretty good gig on ESPN. Well,
this is what he does. He's a coach. He wants
to coach, so he's going to coach, and he was
good at that. This like, well, Bruce Parl going probably
going to go to do the TV because he's good

(08:46):
at it.

Speaker 3 (08:46):
So is Josh. Yeah, I'll go back. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:49):
I mean they get started, their season starts just like
Arizona's November fourth, and they've got a bunch of cupcakes
in Vegas. You go to Maryland, go to Maryland or
they're playing them. I don't know if it's one of
those conference or one of those you know, tournament things.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
Yeah. Well don't forget Damon at Georgia Tech. How about
Alabama at UNLV. It's a tough one. Yeah, well that's
it's not going to be pretty. It's not going to
be pretty. These could be like they're not MAUI are they? No?

Speaker 2 (09:15):
I think you could go next year. We gotta we
gotta save our Nichols and go back to Mali. I
haven't been there in twenty some years.

Speaker 4 (09:23):
I've never been there. No, I want a great place,
great place. I'm not telling you about it. I had
a guy I worked with at the foundation. You have
a foundation who went every year, didn't matter who was there.

Speaker 2 (09:32):
Yeah, it's a fun time. The thing is if you're
working it. I never saw the beach ever, Yeah, because
we're too busy. When can you get to the beach
like at eight o'clock because you.

Speaker 3 (09:42):
Got to do the games. It's so obviously a packed house. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:45):
The hotel's fantastic, Ubbas because they wouldn't stay in place else.

Speaker 3 (09:48):
I saw the beach.

Speaker 2 (09:49):
There were a few times that would loot there and
have your stories with that there. But you're so busy,
if you remember, I think maybe the last time I
was there was the time in two thousand whenever someone
was one of the better games in the country of
the best team, and Laura Woods was suspended for the
first few games of his season. Remember he had taken
some money for the family family friend, YadA YadA, and

(10:10):
that same year he had the back injury and kept
him from from playing in the final stages and they
lost to Wisconsin. That's the number one overall seed in
the tournament.

Speaker 4 (10:21):
Here's a good game for Josh Passner. Speaking of Josh
at Memphis, they go there, go back to November sixteenth,
so that one to see if.

Speaker 3 (10:28):
That was purposely made.

Speaker 4 (10:29):
I don't know, to get him before he was their
problem before he got to Vegas.

Speaker 2 (10:33):
What do you mean, Oh, or maybe because he coached
there for a number of years before they kind of
said you better leave before we fired.

Speaker 4 (10:39):
So they have a little tourney and at the MGM
Grand Garden like around Thanksgiving with Maryland and Alabama. Oh,
that's not even on campus in Vegas. Yeah, they go
to Stanford and then they've had, you know, some other
other tough ones.

Speaker 3 (10:55):
So we'll see what happens with him. A issue.

Speaker 2 (10:57):
Do you see the issue football game this weekend? They
want to Baylor last second. Yeah, second, what did you watch?
You go ahead, I'll give you you well that and
then you then you see the Giants. Last night with
the Chiefs, we talked. Kataboo is playing. You know why.
Issue was pretty good last year. Did you see him
score that time? Yeah, it was fantastic. The backflip, it
was fantastic. The dude just like a human boone ball.

Speaker 4 (11:20):
And the players love him, my parents and the fans.
He's already you know, fan favorite.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
He's a New Yorker.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
How tough he is. You know, I'm just terrible. Probably
fire there coat, Oh yeah, he's yeah. They were better
not make it past this week. They were bad and
then then Russell I think his time has.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
Come and they're all they all want the new KI.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
You could tell Jackson Dart, Yeah, you could tell by
him just coming in there in New York.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
Aren't happy people now and they're not gonna have any patience.

Speaker 4 (11:47):
So, I mean, the Jets are terrible Giants.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
It's too bad. I mean, number one market in the country.
It's funny though.

Speaker 2 (11:56):
I was watching, you know, on the Red Red Zone,
and I'm went away from the TV. I guests a
little bit, and the Tampa Bay was man handling the
Jets pretty easily. Came back and the Jets had to lead. Yeah,
and then they had to come back and win it
the final final kick.

Speaker 4 (12:11):
I think, what do you think of those throwback uniforms,
the Tampa Bay By Creamsicles?

Speaker 2 (12:16):
I must have been fourteen when they had them, when
they first came out with McKay.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
Was it McKay? John McKay, You know what? They wore
him for twenty years.

Speaker 5 (12:23):
I don't.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
I didn't realize that they were. They also didn't win
forever terrible. Yeah, they were horrible.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
They remember they didn't win a game like their first
fourteen I think, yeah, do you think of your team's execution?
I'm all for it John McKay's favoritely. That was a
great quote.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
He was great. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
He was in an era where the coaches they didn't
give anything to say whatever they felt. No Madden, no
politically correct statements. Madden, you grew up in the in
the Bay. How I just saw something on Jim Plunkett. Yeah,
how loved was he?

Speaker 3 (12:59):
Or were you team?

Speaker 1 (13:01):
No?

Speaker 4 (13:01):
It's funny to say that because we moved there in
nineteen sixty nine, and that's the year he won the Heisman.
So I remember stepped into I remember going to a
Stanford game. I didn't even know what I was doing.
I think it was I was on a camp trip
or something. I was like eleven. Okay, so there's Jim Plunket.
They go to the he wins the Heisman. Then they

(13:21):
go to the Rose Bowl, and they go again, and
then they were awful for like thirty or so years,
and then they went back you know, later later in time.
But yeah, Jim Plunkett was a big deal. He was
from San Jose, you know, so we grew up there
and everybody. He was like kind of a local hero.
What was it exactly was his parents somebody was blind.
I don't I'm going to mess up the store.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
I think his dad was, and his mom worked two
jobs or three jobs.

Speaker 4 (13:45):
Just a typical, you know, just a tough story. I
didn't get into Stanford. To Stanford must have been pretty smart.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
Yeah, well he was very good, obviously a competitive guy.
I got and then he started winning Super Bowl.

Speaker 4 (13:56):
He went to Yeah, you know, he gets drafted by
the Patriots, number one on. They're terrible in those years.
He kind of I think he went to the forty
nine ers for a year or so, and then he
goes to the Raiders and they win, you know, a
couple of Super Bowls, eighty one, eighty three, something like that.

Speaker 3 (14:10):
I don't know why.

Speaker 2 (14:10):
I just remember seeing something over the weekend about him,
and I said this. I think I even wrote a
book or read a book about him when I was
a little kid, about.

Speaker 3 (14:18):
Plunk it, Yeah, blunking at him.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
And because he's a Hispanic guy, you know, when you're Hispanic,
you're kind of trying to gravitate this stuff like that.

Speaker 3 (14:24):
And Flora is his coach to Flora's first Hispanic so
to win a sort of super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (14:29):
Yeah, and then we'll look Johnny Bench too. I was
a Cincinnati Red guy, so I read those and did
book reports on those things.

Speaker 3 (14:37):

Hey, welcome back to Wire on the Ball here on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty I'm Steve Rivera, and today with

Speaker 3 (18:52):
Now on the phone, we have Michael Lib Michael, how.

Speaker 12 (18:54):
You doing good? How are you guys?

Speaker 2 (18:57):
We're doing fine. I'm assuming you went to today's press coverence.

Speaker 12 (19:00):
Yes, yes, sir, they went well. Bran Branners is in
good spirits. I think he likes where his team is
at right now, and I think it's feeling pretty confident
heading into this first road game. Of the season based

(19:21):
on how well the Wildcats have played, how hard they've played,
and I think the fact that the spy week gave
them a chance to heal up some some guys have
been banged up. They haven't had their full lineup any
of the first three games and won them anyway. So

(19:42):
I don't know. I think there's there's a lot of
positive momentum heading into this one on Saturday.

Speaker 4 (19:48):
It's been a long time since we've said that about
football here. But you know, why do you think it's
worked so far?

Speaker 3 (19:55):
What? What are you seeing from your standpoint? Why is it?
Why are they three?

Speaker 1 (19:58):
And?

Speaker 3 (19:58):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (19:59):
Well?

Speaker 12 (20:00):
Well, I mean I think they upgraded the roster, especially
in the area of depth. Okay, last year i'd say,
you know, their top ten players were probably better than
this year's top ten players, maybe even the top twenty.
But you know, the difference over the long haul of

(20:20):
a season, or even in the short term when you
have a lot of injuries and which is an inevitability
in the sport of football, is like positions twenty one
through sixty, you know, So they really set out this
year to upgrade that portion of the roster, get more depth,
get more speed, but d are a lot of experienced players,

(20:43):
even though they were experienced on lower levels in many
cases FCS FCS players, but many of them have worked
out well. I think the team is way better coached
this year than last. I think they upgraded at all
three coordinator positions, and you could make a case based
on results so far that no coordinator in the country

(21:05):
has done a better job than Arizona defensive coordinator Danny Gonzalez.
So those are two factors, and I think the third
one is that there's just more unity and buy in
after you know, the stat Brendan came in late last year,
in mid January, and it was kind of like, you know,

(21:25):
there's so much time and effort was spent on just
keeping the team in place rather than building the team up.
And with a full off season, they've had a chance,
you know, he and his staff have had a chance
to kind of build their own team.

Speaker 2 (21:40):
So I'll ask you at the end of the interview
about to you if you want to make any predictions
or anything, but would you agree with me here that
Arizona case three and Oero they played fairly well given
the schedule or toughness or not toughness but that they
get hope from Iowa State in as much as they
haven't really played well to this point.

Speaker 12 (22:01):
I mean, Iowa State's four and oh right, but they've
only blown out one opponent, Yeah, which you know was
expected North Dakota, right, one score game against Kansas State,
a Kansas State team that you know. It was also
a one score game against Arizona, But I think anyone
who watched that game would would come away saying that
Arizona was the better team for most of that game

(22:23):
except for one stretch of five minutes or so to
start the second half. They they the Cyclones won a
squeaker over Iowa State. I mean that game was kind
of how you would expect, right, that's just how Iowa
plays against everybody. And it was a low scoring, back
and forth game, one on special teams at the end,

(22:45):
and then you know, one score win over Arkansas State.
I thought that would be a close game because it
was just a kind of a difficult situation for Iowa State.
Like I kept waiting, like when is the letdown going
to happen? You know, Like, but maybe maybe it would
happen Week one for them coming off of the win
over over their rivals Kansas State. It didn't happen, but

(23:08):
then another rivalry game, so you know, that was kind
of a flat spot for them. They found a way
to win over an Arkansas State team that isn't very good.
So so yeah, I mean, you could make the case
that they are not a dominant team. They are not
the best team in the Big twelve. I'd say at
this point in time, most people would say that that's

(23:30):
Texas sack and you could. You could make a case
for several others. You can make case for TCU, you
can make a case for BYU, you can make a
case for a su. Iowa State is in that mix.
But I just don't I don't feel like this is
an unwinnable game, even though Iowa stated is going to
have a pretty significant, you know, home field advantage. They

(23:53):
always sell out there. It's a night game and it's
a whiteout, so the fans will be very into it.

Speaker 4 (24:01):
Give them all data celebrating in ames Iowa. Who knows
what to expect? I guess, right, what's spread is that?

Speaker 3 (24:06):
Yet?

Speaker 12 (24:09):
It opened at seven and a half and the last
I looked today it was down to six and a half,
which should tell you that some money has come in
on the Arizona side of things. Right looking at it
right now, it's five and a half. Wow, So maybe
even a little bit more money has come in, you
know what, and a lot of you know, if it's

(24:31):
if it's quote unquote sharp money, they're probably looking at
a lot of the numbers in this matchup then at
least so far, like a lot of those numbers actually
favor Arizona, you know, like I always state, doesn't really
stand out that much in any particular category. That being said,
I mean, they have a really good smart quarterback and

(24:53):
rock go back. They play a little different style than
Arizona's used to, like a lot of tight end usage
for block talking and receiving. So that would be an
interesting matchup to watch, and as mentioned, you know, a
very good home field advantage.

Speaker 4 (25:09):
You know, we're moving into October, and you wrote a
really good piece last week about what's coming on. Uh,
I guess it's October eleventh with BYU coming in and
also the the.

Speaker 3 (25:18):
Theres on a fall league.

Speaker 4 (25:19):
Can you maybe talk a little bit more about that
and what's your what's your point of that story was?

Speaker 12 (25:25):
Yeah, I mean, you know, I think in an ideal world,
you wouldn't have the Arizona Fall League triple header in
Tucson on the same day as an Arizona football game.
And there is an Arizona football game that day against BYU.
We don't know when that game is going to kick off.
My best guess is that it's going to be a

(25:46):
night game because it's two West Coast teams and they
usually like to slot sort of similar to Colorado, like
ESPN likes to put BYU in that late night time
slot because they they bring in a lot of eyeballs.
So let's just assume for the stake of argument that that's
the seven seven, fifteen, seven thirty kickoffs. Well, you've got

(26:08):
a chance as a sports fan here in Tucson to
do something unique, and that's go to a game or
two uh over at you know stadium to see the
Arizona Fall League and then make your way over to
Arizona Stadium to watch football all in the same day.
I mean, a rare opportunity, a fun opportunity, something really cool.

(26:33):
And you know, a lot of really good prospects are
playing in the arizon A Fall League. Thirteen of the
top one hundred using MLB dot COM's ratings, including two
of the top five. So you know, you might see
someone who is a future Major leaguer, a future All Star,
maybe even a future Hall of Famer.

Speaker 9 (26:55):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (26:55):
Yeah, we'll see what happens.

Speaker 2 (26:57):
We'll see what happens with all that baseball you must
be in with all this stuff coming.

Speaker 12 (27:02):
In, I mean, it's a lot of fun. They've kind
of set up this like continuum of baseball here in October,
you know, starting with the Mexican Baseball Fiesta, and then
you go right into the as in a Fall league,
and then you go right into the debut of the
Tous baseball team. Those things are all happening within a
two week span, and then that, you know, and then

(27:25):
starting act over sixteenth to some baseball team will be
off and running. That is a very high level of
professional baseball, just a notch or two below. M'll be
it'll be interesting to see what the you know, the
fan reception is like here. I think it will help
when they come up with a name and do you know,

(27:48):
do some branding to some baseball team. Not super catchy,
but I understand why they did what they did. They
want to have, you know, they want to have a contest.
They want to involve the folks here in it. So
I'm looking forward to seeing what the what the finalists
are for that as well.

Speaker 3 (28:03):
How many games are they going to play? Thirty? Isn't
it about thirty?

Speaker 12 (28:07):
I think it's thirty four home games, thirty four away games. Okay, Yeah,
like I said, I think it's sixty eight. I wanted
I'm gonna I should trouble check this while we're talking.
I think it's sixty eight games. And then there's playoffs,
so you know, to finish in the top whatever, you
have a chance to play in the playoffs. And I
think that's in January, which, again, that's like kind of

(28:30):
a pretty good time on the on the sports calendar.
Obviously Big twelve basketball will be in full swing at
that point, but you know it's not March madness, right, Yeah,
football will be over at that point. I think I
think the timing of like fall baseball actually works out

(28:51):
pretty well. And and the other thing that I think
is kind of appealing about it is the weather.

Speaker 1 (28:57):
Right.

Speaker 12 (28:58):
Sarah Horvath, who runs the Keino Sports Complex, she calls it,
at you know, correctly, hooty weather, and we all love
hooty weather, which can't get here soon.

Speaker 2 (29:09):
Enough, right, But let me ask you, so, I've just
really sent an email out today. I haven't read it.
Dave was kind of going through it. But you've been
here now twelve years or so, how would you work
your magic? And I think they'd tried to do this
last week, which is a fantastic thing, trying to make
tickets cheaper, YadA, YadA, just get people in the building
at football.

Speaker 12 (29:29):
Well, first of all, I love how Steve was before
I thought I'd only been here like seven or eight years,
and now things that I've been here twelve years.

Speaker 3 (29:37):
Kid, you better correct, I think it's swelled, right is it.

Speaker 12 (29:40):
Twelve it'll be ten years of December.

Speaker 3 (29:43):
Well, I'm somewhere in the Middlewhere.

Speaker 12 (29:45):
Middle, that's the difference. Yeah. No, if she is doing
she and her team, she has assembled a team of
people to help her with this. I mean, she's just
trying to do everything she can to create a good
atmosphere at Arizona Stadium. And I have to admit, when
I'm watching a lot of these games over the weekend,

(30:09):
I don't think Arizona's there yet, you know, just like
how maybe that maybe that's just what they're showing us
on TV. But I see fuller stadiums. I see everyone
wearing like the colors, you know, and being super duper
into it. And I don't get that sense for Arizona
football yet. But you know what, if you beat Iowa

(30:33):
State on Saturday, even with a noon kickoff, which is
great for us in the media, for that Oklahoma State game,
not necessarily great for fans, but that will, that will
I think generate a lot of buzz and excitement. And
I think that aforementioned b what you game on October eleventh,
If Arizona is and then they should be four and

(30:55):
one at worst heading into that game because Oklahoma State
is terrible and they should win that game at the
very least. I think it'd be a lot of buzz
for that one, and I think that might be the
first sellout of the season.

Speaker 3 (31:05):
Yeah, I was gonna say.

Speaker 4 (31:06):
Historically, when BYU comes into the state of Arizona, you know,
big crowds follow.

Speaker 3 (31:11):
So.

Speaker 12 (31:14):
They have a great following. And in fact, I think
one of the big mistakes that the leadership of the
PAC twelve made was not, you know, making a push
to bring BYU on board when they had the opportunity
to do so. I mean, maybe the timing wasn't right,
maybe BYU had already committed to the Big twelve by

(31:34):
that point, But to me, that would have been a
great way to save the conference because super duper popular
fan base spread across the country, I mean big enough
that they had their own deal with ESPN for the
longest time.

Speaker 3 (31:50):
Real quick.

Speaker 2 (31:50):
I saw Justin Spear's photo of your luxury boxes in
the press room.

Speaker 3 (31:56):
Nice.

Speaker 12 (32:00):
I mean the table we have we have, we have
a table, We've got little like we've got little holders
for our for our phones if we want to record
a video. It's nice.

Speaker 3 (32:10):
Yeah.

Speaker 12 (32:13):
Time.

Speaker 3 (32:14):
What so you were today? Did you take advantage of
what they gave you? Is a little gift.

Speaker 12 (32:19):
I mean, look, I put my laptop up, putting your
lap up on the table as opposed to on your lap.

Speaker 3 (32:24):
Yes, yes, it is a better.

Speaker 12 (32:26):
Experience, especially since this is a little inside baseball here.
They have to turn off the air conditioning for when
when people talk because it's so loud and it like
interferes with the recording. So it's get a little toasty
in there. So not having to put that hot laptop
actually on my lap is nice and they get this water,
so I don't know they're taking care of us.

Speaker 3 (32:46):
Drop in one of these days.

Speaker 2 (32:49):
This damn show, you know, creates a little problems for me.
But the funny thing is, I don't know if you
saw Anthony Gimio's cheat. His tweet about it says, well,
back in the day, I'm sure they did it in
your previous life somewhere else where they fed you for
lunch and gave you a hot meal.

Speaker 3 (33:03):
You remember that day?

Speaker 10 (33:04):
Oh my god?

Speaker 12 (33:04):
Like the football luncheon, those are the those are the days.

Speaker 10 (33:09):
Of your did you cover your did you cover you?

Speaker 12 (33:11):
Used to be saying not anymore?

Speaker 3 (33:12):
Did you ever cover you covered? USC? Right? Yeah, yeah,
because I went to a couple.

Speaker 4 (33:17):
Of those lunches, like even when Larry Smith back in
those days, we would go over there yasually.

Speaker 12 (33:22):
I think that was before even my time. My first
year on that beat was two thousand and eight. Yeah,
and I don't I think it might have been like
one of those like at the start of the season,
but it was definitely not in every week.

Speaker 2 (33:32):
What about your what about your previous stops in Chicago area?

Speaker 12 (33:39):
I well, the USC was really the first team beat
that I was ever on, So that would be my
first opportunity to have something like that. You know, actually
I covered oh man, I'm not going to think about
this what this team was called. I covered the LA
team in the XFL, the pre XFL, which was called

(34:02):
I think it's called the La Extreme Express. And no,
it was the La Extreme. Okay. Established two thousand and one,
thousand and one, Okay, two thousand and one was the
heck of a year. And we had we had a
regular media luncheon for the lax Tream somewhere in the
Long Beach.

Speaker 3 (34:21):
So nice, like you say, a long time ago. But
you get a desk in Tommy Maddocks.

Speaker 12 (34:27):
Tommy Maddox was the quarterback. Wow, uh yeah, played in
the NFL, right right.

Speaker 2 (34:34):
Okay, well, good, good for you guys. I'll maybe have
to share a desk with you or two. Thanks man, Thanks,
we'll see you this weekend.

Speaker 12 (34:42):
Hey, anytime, guys.

Speaker 2 (34:43):

Speaker 2 (38:59):
Welcome back to Eye on the Ball hero Fox Sports
fourteen fifty I'm Steve Rivera or Dave Silver. Good to
talk to Michael liv get his perspective on things. He's
a big baseball guy, so it's good to talk to
him about that. Yeah, it's good to have some baseball coming.
It's literally like in the next month, as he was saying,
there's gonna be a whole yeah, pushy games and that
Mexican baseball team, will you know, kind of carry on

(39:19):
through the winter, So it's gonna be good times. Yeah,
and a lot of options, right, a lot of different
styles of you know, I'm sure you've been to the
Mexican Baseball Festa.

Speaker 3 (39:26):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (39:27):
Yeah, And the first time I ever showed up, I
was like, holy crap, they allow this stuff, you know,
it's it's it's a concert with the baseball game going up.

Speaker 3 (39:33):
Will they continue that you think during the league game?
I don't know. I don't know. Is that Isn't that
just kind of this culture of those gay yah?

Speaker 1 (39:40):
Yeah? Yeah.

Speaker 3 (39:40):
Yeah. The guy that would know would be Mike Favor.

Speaker 2 (39:42):
But I would bet to say yes, because, like you said,
it's part of the system.

Speaker 3 (39:48):
Right, it's going to be interesting. You know, I don't know.

Speaker 4 (39:52):
I don't pay really close attention to the minor leagues
and the players and the prospects. It's one of those
things in the aftermath you go, oh wow, I didn't
realize it. You know, Derek Jeter was in the airs
in a fall league, or Michael Jordan and people like that.
I mean, there's there were some great players back in
the nineties when that thing started that eventually got to
the big leagues.

Speaker 2 (40:10):
So did you hear my controversy for this show? Which
means nothing, because there's no controversy here on my show
about talking baseball, Like, oh, you got to talk baseball
because you don't talk about.

Speaker 3 (40:21):
Enough about baseball.

Speaker 2 (40:23):
No, it's not what I do here, because I don't
know enough about it to talk about it. You know,
it's like, hey, Dave, you want to talk about marriage,
What the hell would I know? What the hell you
want talk about good marriage? What the hell would I know?
They want to talk about baseball. So my buddy here again,
are you ready to talk to baseball when we get
to the playoffs?

Speaker 3 (40:37):
I want to talk about it exactly.

Speaker 2 (40:38):
Well, baseball, we talk about it enough. As we get
closer to the playoffs, guess what we'll do. We'll talk
more about baseball as we settle in. Because you're talking
about the diamondback tright, they're hanging on by a thread.
They are okay, Well, I'm sure other threads are out there,
but Dodgers are in. The Dodgers are in, okay, but
they're in. And who's on a thread still? The Reds
are on a thread at the heads Giants are out

(41:00):
finally not.

Speaker 3 (41:02):
Well there are there are threads. Okay, so they're on
a thread, so it's real.

Speaker 4 (41:05):
It's really just the Diamondbacks and the Mets in the
in the reds, yeah, to get that last wild card spot.

Speaker 3 (41:10):
So once that happens, we might get into it.

Speaker 4 (41:13):
By by Sunday afternoon, you'll have your answer and then
we're talking about the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (41:17):
Yes, yeah, In fact that we were just talking about
having someone on tomorrow, uh former manager here, So I
won't say who it is in case we can't find him,
but I'm sure I have people who can fight it
for us.

Speaker 3 (41:28):
Now. I'm kind of.

Speaker 2 (41:29):
Waiting to wait till next week, just because if we
can talk more about baseball, have baseball people there you go,
you know so, And I don't mind that because we'll
know about the playoffs.

Speaker 4 (41:39):
Well, we're in the we're in the fall now, so
we can start talking about fall sports, right right.

Speaker 2 (41:43):
I saw a little of the Houston Seattle game yesterday
or the day before, and Seattle zero zero and then
all of a sudden, the seven zero they beat their crap.

Speaker 3 (41:51):
Out of the ball yesterday. Red hots. Yeah, because they
swept them, didn't they At the Astrona one nine of
their last ten.

Speaker 4 (41:57):
They're in the first place in the West, you know,
so they're in the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (42:01):
Yeah, and their superstar guy is really a superstar, the
big Dumper, the Big Dumper. How many homers I said,
I want to say fifty seven if you hit another
one and maybe one last night.

Speaker 3 (42:12):
Yeah, he was on the ESPN had him on like
right after the game. I don't know why I.

Speaker 4 (42:16):
Was flipping over there during football, but he was on
there doing the postgame is.

Speaker 3 (42:19):
So tell me, Dave, what's your nickname? What? What? What
was your giving? You can't kill yourself?

Speaker 9 (42:22):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (42:23):
I want know you would you want to be called
the dumper? Mister big Wait? Wait that was from Sex
and the City.

Speaker 3 (42:34):
Come on, have you had to have had No? I
never did. Really, You're just that normal of a guy.

Speaker 2 (42:41):
High hose silver that was Maybe that must have been
second great dad. Okay, okay, oh that's not good. That's
not a good one. Now, all about the but there's
no yeah, you just never.

Speaker 3 (42:54):
Just just a straight line dud. Yeah, yeah, I didn't
veer off too far. Okay, never mind remind Yeah, but.

Speaker 2 (43:01):
I am a baseball fan, So where I was gonna
go is that was the was the question about the dumper,
would you want me to go big dude too, big dude,
big hitter, and came on the scene like who is
this dude? I mean, he was on there like I
can't believe it.

Speaker 4 (43:15):
You know, I passed Ken Griffy Junior, I passed Johnny
Bench for the most home runs by a catcher, but
you know, most homers by a Mariner And here I
am who.

Speaker 3 (43:23):
I mean, did anybody know who this guy was? Before
last year.

Speaker 2 (43:25):
We joked about this one do with Jay, you know,
mister crushing dreams with his teams. He got him just
like you know, and also ran pick in his fatasy league. Seriously, yeah,
and he says, who is this guy? Said, I don't
know who this guy is. And then all of a sudden,
here's the surprise about Jay. You know, he he picks
Dave Silver, and Dave Silver's career is done. Yeah, this
guy didn't didn't It didn't happen for Jay with.

Speaker 4 (43:47):
This guy, he's hitting two forty seven okay, fifty eight homers.
I earned twenty one runs bad in.

Speaker 2 (43:53):
Yeah, he's got to be twenty seven ish. He is
twenty eight ish, twenty eight twenty eight North Carolina. Yeah,
I mean, come on, who he's like this unknown dudes
came out of nowhere, sasquatch, they found sasquatch, and.

Speaker 3 (44:05):
Here he is. He was.

Speaker 4 (44:08):
I mean he's only been well, he's been in the
major since twenty twenty one, so he's.

Speaker 2 (44:11):
Been around for yeah, not consistently, right, because you you
would know who he is.

Speaker 4 (44:16):
Most home runs by a catcher in a single season,
fifty eight, Cal Raley.

Speaker 2 (44:21):
Uh, and the big and the other guys that you
would know is catchers. Who is the uh, the Dodger
guy and then went to the Mets like Piazza, Piazza.

Speaker 3 (44:29):
Big dudes, you know, bigger guys. Yeah. Who else are there?

Speaker 12 (44:34):
Yo?

Speaker 3 (44:34):
Giberra?

Speaker 2 (44:35):
Yeah, but you know, but that's yeah, way best of
the guys we're hitting home Yeah, Johnny Benches the guy
I saw who's the Dodgers. Soosha, he wasn't much easy.

Speaker 4 (44:43):
I mean who those guys usually weren't the I mean, Yogi,
Roy Campanella, those are the big whales. Yeah, but nowadays,
I mean you got a guy like this hitting fifty eight,
most home runs by a switch hitter, so he's passing
like Mickey Mantle for that kind of stuff and then
home run.

Speaker 2 (44:58):
You say, how many games, but just like five or six, six,
So he's got a chance to get to sixty. We'll
see what happens, and we'll talk more baseball next week
when the playoffs start. I promise, enough of these texts,
enough of these emails, and it's just coming from two
dudes that really care. That's those it's those the barrels.

(45:20):
You know, they hit the barrels, make loud noise, squeaky wheels.

Speaker 3 (45:24):
We want this stuff. So we'll see.

Speaker 2 (45:27):
Yeah, this weekend again, we're gonna have the honey huddle
on Saturday, beginning the games at four right on Saturday,
so one o'clock we'll have the honey huddle and we'll
see what happens on the road in Iowa State. I
agree with with Lev because we all seen it for years.
You've seen it longer than me. Dave, you win and
start to show up even for a noon game.

Speaker 4 (45:48):
Even for Oklahoma State at noon, get your own, get
your son screened out for that one. But then the
BYU game, I'm looking forward to that one. I'm gonna
go to that one actually, but you no, it should
be fun to just sort of see this team grow hopefully,
you know, and like like Mike was saying, you know,
if they could get to the BYU game at four
and one, that's that's pretty good.

Speaker 3 (46:07):
That's probably more than we ever would have expected. Not
that you pay attention to this, but it is Gundy
get to survive. I don't know, he's they got just
wall ups again last week? Right, yeah, yeah, it was.

Speaker 2 (46:18):
Yet against the team they hadn't lost too at home
since nineteen fifty one.

Speaker 3 (46:22):
Oh yeah, you know I was watching some of that.

Speaker 2 (46:24):
But about the Florida coach, another one in trouble, Yeah,
he was in trouble last year.

Speaker 4 (46:28):
But I kind of sells things near the end of
the season. But still right, you know, losing these games
that way.

Speaker 2 (46:35):
There's a few coaches out there, you know, the guy
that's been very impressive, very impressive, and stuff like this
doesn't happen by accident. And I've seen them play a
sound player a few times last year and this year
a little, just a little, because they kicked the crop
out of Illinois. The coach at Illinois, coach at Indiana, Yeah, yeah,
he's up for going to be up for a huge job,

(46:56):
huge job.

Speaker 3 (46:56):
Well, I mean they were great last year and had slaughter.

Speaker 2 (46:59):
It was his first year the season, Yeah, but it
was his first year at that spot.

Speaker 3 (47:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (47:03):
I mean that that's a great story, just the fact
that you know, they were even able to, you know,
put things together really for the first time in a
long long time. I mean when when's last time anybody really,
at least nationally was even talking about Indiana football?

Speaker 3 (47:15):
No, I know, no, I know.

Speaker 2 (47:17):
Uh. And then I guess, did you see a spinal
score Washington Washington State? Because Washington was Hashington just destroyed?

Speaker 3 (47:24):
Did that?

Speaker 2 (47:24):
Okay? And then I'm sure his name will come up
every now and again. Well, the story was a couple
of jobs Florida. That's the that was kind of the rumor.

Speaker 4 (47:31):
He had to shout shoot down last week when when
Billy Napier, their coach, was getting criticized, Well, who are
they going to get? Well, here's your lama. Yeah, you know,
I don't want to leave again.

Speaker 3 (47:41):
That's what he does. You think about it?

Speaker 2 (47:42):
I don't if if I'm cautious, he hasn't done enough
to get that job.

Speaker 3 (47:47):
I mean, they won fifty nine to twenty four over
the Wazoo and they had just left him.

Speaker 4 (47:51):
Last year yeah, so you know, money talks, and he's
you know, he's the job job jumper, whatever the thing is.

Speaker 2 (48:00):
Who That's a heck of a reach, though, you know,
we'll see what happens on UCLA is open.

Speaker 3 (48:05):
We'll see what happens in.

Speaker 4 (48:06):
Another interesting situation there with hardly any not nearly the
nil money that USC is able to generate or the care.
I mean, they just don't care. They don't care.

Speaker 3 (48:17):
I never have really, I mean, it's always second fiddle.

Speaker 2 (48:20):
To the usccah US in any other school. Pictures they
show with a rose bowl too, are just so sad.
I mean, ye, wide angle shot looks like there's about
you know, a thousand people in one of the most
beautiful stadiums and biggest stadiums. Right, there's plenty to do
in La. What do you want to do? Waste your
time at an u c l A game. The good
thing is you can get out of there quickly.

Speaker 4 (48:41):
Yeah, well, like you know, and then being in the
Big Ten, it's it's the same situation in Arizona it
is in with I mean some of the Big ten
schools you know are pretty well known.

Speaker 3 (48:50):
Yeah, I mean, isn't it. There's like, what is it
to who's the Oregon playing this week? Penn State?

Speaker 4 (48:55):
Yeah, big game, Yeah that's yeah, that's like a Rose Bowl, Yeah,
which was like in the early nineties.

Speaker 3 (49:03):
Or even yeah, just not too long ago. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (49:05):
Yeah, so we'll see. It's gonna get The season is
going to heat up here in a second everywhere. But
we talked about the Big twelve. I think Texas Tech
is the team to beat ASU one, so they're kind
of staying up there. Utah fell a little obviously, with
lots of Texas take.

Speaker 3 (49:22):
Still a lot of teams that haven't lost yet.

Speaker 2 (49:24):
Yeah, TCU was impressive as Houston's three, and now that's
kind of strange.

Speaker 3 (49:29):
They were, but they're like Arizona. What do you know
about that? Right? You know, I don't even know who
they played.

Speaker 2 (49:34):
I don't think they played any minut any good. So
we'll see as we get closer to October.

Speaker 4 (49:39):
Yeah, they beat Rice, They did beat Colorado in Houston.

Speaker 2 (49:44):
Yeah, but how good is Colorado? Colorado went over the weekend.
I think they did. They played nobody. I don't think
who knows what's gonna happen with Dion, So he was
quoted I think today is saying that his son's going
to be playing for the Browns like this year. Well
they got green Bay was horrible yesterday. Here's the funny thing,

(50:05):
because I talked about momentum and how it doesn't exist.
I mean, to them person that I ran into this week,
green Bay is the team to beat through.

Speaker 3 (50:11):
This year's Super Bowl.

Speaker 2 (50:12):
They're playing out of their mind, blah blah blah, and
then they lose to Cleveland. That tells you about momentum
right there. You're only as good as last haircut. You're
only as good as what you're doing today.

Speaker 4 (50:21):
It's true, they were. They were my one of my
teams to pick this week. Did you pick them in
any kind.

Speaker 2 (50:26):
Of I picked them in the pool here there, so
I went, you know, in the five games you pick,
I picked the Packers. That's the only one I lost. Yeah,
against the spread, that's the only one I lost. And
they had the spread. They were killing. They had them
ten zero middle of the fourth and then they lose again.

Speaker 3 (50:39):
It was a ten to three, it was ten ten
and then it was over. Then it was over. Yeah,
thirteen to thirteen. Yeah, we got to go.

Speaker 9 (50:47):
Date.

Speaker 2 (50:47):
Thanks for coming in. Sure would have the same show
tomorrow kind of maybe better. I already have one guest
and we just got to find the other.

Speaker 3 (50:54):
Thanks Dave,
