Speaker 1 (00:02):

Speaker 1 (00:20):
This is I on the Ball, breaking news on Fox
Sports fourteen fifty eight.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
All right, Obviously, the big news coming out of today
is the men's basketball team announcing their Big Twelve schedule.
The out of conference schedule came out officially yesterday, and
so the jug men's Yes, the men's conference Big twelve
conference schedule came out today.

Speaker 4 (00:46):
I mean the women's did too yesterday. That's great. Oh yeah,
women's came out.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
This will be the last time you see him on
a Wednesday, Tuesday, Tuesday, see like you won't see tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
Uh but yeah, so you know that has has some
some people going some more local stuff to the Sugar
Schools announced.

Speaker 4 (01:11):
Their head coach. Tell me who to get Ray Sean Kaiser?

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Rays Shan Kaiser?

Speaker 4 (01:17):
Did you hear we know who that is?

Speaker 2 (01:18):
I do not have never heard the news release or.

Speaker 4 (01:20):
Anything we can.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
Yeah, so it was on Twitter by the Tucson Sugar
Schools official.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
Look that up, David Twitter Twitter.

Speaker 4 (01:33):
Oh no, no, but well it's on there. It's on
their website too. It's on their website too.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
I don't blame you because Twitter is like, holy crap,
you don't know what you're gonna get. It's like a
bargain bind of of Uh look for sugar skulls there.

Speaker 5 (01:46):
I should be saying, yeah, he sugar dolls sugar skulls.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
He served as the as the Tucson defensive coordinator the
last two seasons. Said he had aggressive and talented defense.

Speaker 4 (01:59):
Uh, was a player back in the day.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
I don't think for the Sugar Schools, but you know,
obviously played football and maybe.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
His name again, Heiser. He was with the with the
team before. Yes, I thought they were going to make
a splashy higher. That was the impression that I got,
really did.

Speaker 5 (02:17):
And he's a defensive defensive mastermind. According to the press release.
Is that how you write press releases?

Speaker 2 (02:26):
I think Jay wrote that, so, Uh, you know what.
The one one of the things I learned from Dictomy
back in the day when I was a kid following
the team. There's no such thing as gurus. Everyone's an expert.
There's no mastermind. Kind of like a guru, good one.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
The women's golf team right now is in the middle
of the golf week Red Sky Classic. Yesterday they finished
in fourth place. I haven't seen an update on it today.
I was trying to look for it online, but I
just wasn't able to find it. Some news coming out
of some preseasons preseason baseball baseball team, you've just played

(03:11):
their first game preseason game yesterday and no gallas and
they won against the nan Hitos for the two.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
Nice we know a roster. Do we have players yet?
Probably not? Probably not. And you've just reached the portion
of the Arizona baseball schedule or baseball you're carrying the ball.

Speaker 4 (03:29):
Yep, ye that what you gave me.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
That Look what we're telling baseball.

Speaker 4 (03:33):
Yeah, we are going to be talking baseball.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
Other big news coming out of MLB this time, Uh,
they approved the robot umpires for twenty twenty six as
part of the Challenge system. I think it's also a
part of just like the everyday game stuff as well.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (03:52):
So that's uh, you know, big shake up in one
of the you know, kind of.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Older you know rules new when you versus old. Yeah, yeah,
tonight show, Hey faces the d Backs. Big game, big
game talking about that. You don't know, you know, the
people won't text me and say they never talk about Basil.

Speaker 5 (04:14):
Go ahead, No, the standings. I mean they're locked in
the wild card race. There were three other.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
Teams fighting to guns like three games. They got six,
six games, and yeah there's Francona.

Speaker 5 (04:26):
When the Reds and the Mets are tied with a
record of eighty and seventy six and the Diamondbacks are
game back, so.

Speaker 2 (04:31):
They're just gonna win knocking on the door.

Speaker 5 (04:33):
They will throw five innings probably like usual if that,
and we'll see home runs. Yeah, big series. I'm going
to be there on Thursday. Should be fun.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
When you're not coming in Thursday, I'm telling you now Wednesday,
you're not coming in.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
So yeah that that that that actually does wrap it
up for baseball, though.

Speaker 2 (04:58):
We could have talked more out. We're gonna get Bret
Strong when he comes back, so he'll help us out.
I didn't realize he was with the Pirates. I thought
he retired, now, yeah did you Yeah, it's surprising, See
yeah I did. I thought he had retired this is.

Speaker 4 (05:12):
An interesting one.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
So the Suns are facing several lawsuits from current and
former employees be this spring, and so in order to
retain their job, they have to sign an agreement limiting
their ability to sue the team over workforce matters.

Speaker 4 (05:29):
According to multiple SEAM sources.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
What can they do that? I don't think that. I
guess they could, but you don't have to sign it
or the coold face termination, I don't guess. But that's strange.

Speaker 3 (05:41):
So you can't just behave so there, I guess there's
like a certain amount of stuff that you can sue
for when it comes to like workplace matter stuff.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
We can torture you what you can't sue us? Yeah,
don't touch me? But are you're talking about? This? Is
because that's most a lot of the lot of the
things have been sexual related type of yeah, harassment and
whatever happened to the GM or GM or whoever was
a guy who was chasing carpenter or was it who's
the girl that went to fever? Because there was something
there to Yeah, yeah, so there was all that, right,

(06:15):
so that kind of went away?

Speaker 3 (06:17):
Yeah, yeah, I guess I got swept in the ruggedly
I'm sure I'm sure it's going to be this stuff
going calculating on the scenes. Moving on to the big
news that from yesterday the Lions won thirty eight to thirty.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
I was surprising to me. But both teams are still good.
I mean three weeks into the season both teams. But
the Detroit team lost their first game. Played poorly. Yeah,
they played the Packers. Yeah, played poorly. My momentum, dude,
were you here when when I talked about momentum, that's momentum?
Packers looked up. I heard they Then they laid the

(06:53):
egg against Cleveland. That's just how it is. That's why
there's no such thing. It's game to game.

Speaker 5 (06:57):
The games a lot of parody in the NFL. Yeah,
it's just some of the really bad teams. Yeah, like
so like New Orleans, New Orleans and who else. I
mean there's a few, but still you don't know. Last
night's game was a game to watch.

Speaker 4 (07:09):
Yeah, it was. It was really good.

Speaker 3 (07:10):
It's it's been interesting that, you know, the Ravens in
the two games they've lost it obviously, they've been really close.
It's kinda it's kind of come down to that Derek
Henry fumble because it happened in Buffalo too, and obviously
last night.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
They're so good, yeah, until they're not.

Speaker 3 (07:24):
Yeah, it's just like one they'll have one mistake, and
since they're like such a run predicated team, it's like
one stake, one mistakes.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
I love the way he throws the ball, though. Jackson
throws the ball. It's like a it floats. Oh yeah,
it floats. And he couldn't pass to save his life
a few years ago. Now he floats it and then
uh and then the golf last night had that perfect
ball for one.

Speaker 4 (07:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (07:43):
No, And I mean I don't know. I've always been
a big fan of Lamar ever since college. Just like
it was just crazy to me, like flick of the wrist,
you know what I mean, Like he doesn't wind it
up or nothing really and like flick it down, like yeah, exactly,
look at Dart. Also sticking with the NFL, the Giants
are benching Russell Wilson and will be starting Jackson dark.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
I wouldn't I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't come back.
I mean, he would horrible and he looked horrible since
he left the Seahawks.

Speaker 5 (08:11):
He's been kind of in rough situations with those teams
that are either rebuilding or whatever. He hasn't been healthy,
but you're and he's you know, he's getting older, yes,
mother nature.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
And it's tough because you have this reputation of being
this dude, and when that reputation goes, you just it's
hard to get it back because.

Speaker 5 (08:29):
And most quarterbacks, if they're picking the first round, they're
kind of expected to just throw him out there and
just see how they can do well.

Speaker 2 (08:35):
Did you see the game who do they play when
they got crushed?

Speaker 4 (08:39):
Oh?

Speaker 2 (08:40):
Oh it was it was Kansas City? Kansas City. Uh,
every time Dart went out, it was like yeah, and
then when you were saying went out, yeah, you know
that's New York. That's typical New York.

Speaker 4 (08:50):
Yeah, they'll they'll let you know how.

Speaker 2 (08:53):
And that coach is not gonna make it.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
Well, especially just because you know, you see Dan Jones
kind of just like not do well for years.

Speaker 4 (09:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (09:03):
Uh, you know, obviously doesn't get a shot at the
Vikings last year, but then goes to to Indian and
he's lighting it up and it's like, you know, is
it when is it going to fall on the coach?
Kind of Texans release safety C J. Gardner Johnson after
three games he was with the Eagles I think before that,

(09:26):
and yeah.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
So why they release him struggling?

Speaker 4 (09:31):
Yeah, I think it just hasn't been doing too well.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
Uh, I mean the Texans just I don't know them
in general, haven't haven't been doing too hot. I don't
think switching over to college football now though, Oklahoma QB
John Mattier is going to go undergo hand surgery, so
he is expected. They said there isn't a timeline, but

(09:56):
you know, Twitter doctors are saying that it's a should
be about a month before where he comes back.

Speaker 2 (10:00):
Wasn't he's not among the Heisman people, right, maybe he's
made the top ten.

Speaker 5 (10:05):
Yeah he should be, is he Yeah, that'll kill him
his chance?

Speaker 4 (10:09):
Well yeah, just we're still good. Yeah the phone place,
ye man.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Yeah, they're saying he could be back, you know, later
in the year.

Speaker 3 (10:20):
Basically also this weekend in college football we talked about
a little bit, but it is a huge slate of
games that is supposed to be pretty good, starting off
with big noon kickoff USC versus Illinois. That's twenty one
and twenty three.

Speaker 6 (10:36):
Big.

Speaker 4 (10:36):
You don't think that's big? No ranked teams.

Speaker 2 (10:38):
I thought you're gonna sit Oregon Penn State.

Speaker 4 (10:40):
No, that's actually a four thirty one.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
Okay, yeah, okay, all you're saying starting off with that's
the big noon game.

Speaker 4 (10:46):
Yeah, that's the big noon game.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
Oh that's boring.

Speaker 4 (10:48):
And then twelve thirty LSU and Old Miss.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
That's a big yeah.

Speaker 4 (10:54):
One that will be at Old Miss.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Okay, should be good.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
One that you might have have an interest in is
New Mexico State playing New Mexico.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
I have no interest in any of that.

Speaker 5 (11:04):
Does that have a title to it, like, you know,
a civil war or something, the toilet Bowl?

Speaker 2 (11:11):
Yeah, something like that. I don't know. I went to
school there. What groat stories about it? I just don't know.
They're not very good.

Speaker 4 (11:19):
Arizona will be playing Iowa State.

Speaker 3 (11:21):
Obviously, that one's at four, and then the big ones
actually happened at the same time. Oregon and Penn State
and Alabama against Georgia both kicking off at four thirty.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
So it's gonna be a remote. That is gonna be
Burger Place. Burger, give me all those cvs right in
front of me.

Speaker 4 (11:43):
But yeah, that's just the slate.

Speaker 3 (11:45):
And then tonight, if for those basketball fans of the
W n B A the Phoenix Mercury will be playing
against the Minnesota Lynx in Game two of the w
NBA semi Finals, and the Links are leading that series
one to zero.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
You know, I'm surprised the Phoenix is doing so well.
And then the other one was what Indiana versus Vegas? Yes,
in Indiana they playing tonight too.

Speaker 4 (12:10):
Yeah tomorrow. Yeah, they're playing tonight.

Speaker 2 (12:12):
And Ina did really well without uh every end Clark.

Speaker 4 (12:16):
Yeah, but it missing a bunch of people.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
I think, Sophie really who needs stars?

Speaker 4 (12:22):
Yeah, exactly right.

Speaker 2 (12:23):
They're still good.

Speaker 4 (12:24):
Yeah, so yeah, there they are chugging along.

Speaker 3 (12:28):
Also, news out of the w n B a New
York Liberty coach who won the championship with them last
year did not get her contract renewed after her first
round exit.

Speaker 2 (12:39):
Wow, it's kind of brutal. What kind of you know?
It's like a TV guy, Dave your haircut, You're as
good as your last haircut? What that's how it is? Okay,
you had to go to get about Yeah, I know,
you know what I'm saying. You're as good as your
last your last your show victory, yeah, your last show
and whatever that was. And if you do really well,
they expected to come back away and do it again

(13:00):
and do it again.

Speaker 4 (13:01):
Right, Yeah, that's why.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
That's why. Who did I ask yesterday? Just the pressure
of it was the triathlon coach coach Johnson right now,
wet Johnson right out the gate. They win the title
and they have everybody back. What do you think the
pressure is to maybe it's yeah, it is what it is.
But you have your back. You kind of have that hole.
How do you repeat that?

Speaker 6 (13:23):
Right?

Speaker 2 (13:23):
And we talked about that.

Speaker 4 (13:24):
It's hard, right, It's it for me.

Speaker 3 (13:27):
I will say though, I almost got a mullet after
I found out good he got fired. Almost almost you
have if you cut that hair right, you got I
have it. I have the I have the have the
foundation for well, you just need a little a little Jerry, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (13:43):
The the you know, the conditioner living conditioner man. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (13:47):
One other football game coming up, not on Saturday, but
on Friday is ASU at home against tc.

Speaker 2 (13:52):
Well, that should be a good It could be good.
I mean, what's the spread there?

Speaker 4 (13:55):
You know?

Speaker 5 (13:55):
Yeah, the issue is favored by two and a half
at home. TCU is under Didny tanks. That could be
a good. Issue beat us on me last week though
once again the part of the part of being in
the Big twelve, you got games like all over the place.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
That's interesting. That's an interesting game because you know, we
don't know much about Arizona, right just how good they are?

Speaker 4 (14:14):
Is Arizona Arizona?

Speaker 2 (14:16):
But guess what, we don't know the same for ASHU.

Speaker 3 (14:19):
I think it was a kind of a statement win
against Baylor in what way?

Speaker 7 (14:23):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (14:23):
Well, I mean Baylor was ranked obviously, they came back
and they they came back and went against SMU and
then they even made a game against a su very
good as well.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
So take your word for it.

Speaker 4 (14:35):
Yeah, I don't know, that's what I think.

Speaker 2 (14:37):

This is I on the Ball on Fox Sports fourteen.
Finding want to take part in the show Call out
Steam now at five to two ohour one, six seventy
four nights.

Speaker 2 (19:03):
Hey, welcome back to you on the ball here on
Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. I'm Steve Rivera in today's vas
Dave Silver. Now on the phone, we have John Walters,
the voice of the Cyclones. How are you doing?

Speaker 12 (19:14):
I'm doing well, guys.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
How are you We're doing well? Thank you your longtime
voice of the Cyclones. How does this team look? I
think it's well. By our naked eye, it's one of
the better teams in the Big Twelve.

Speaker 12 (19:27):
Yeah, I think it is. You know, it's so hard
to tell. I think there's a lot of really good
teams in the Big twelve right now, and you know,
people are quick to say, well, I was watching the
Utah Texas Tech game the other day and they were saying,
these are clearly the best two teams of the Big.

Speaker 6 (19:40):
Teal I don't.

Speaker 12 (19:41):
I don't know that you can jump to that conclusion
just yet. I think they're good, but I also think
TCU is really good, and Iowa States really good, and
Arizona's playing great football right now, and Arizona State looks
really good, and so I mean, I think it's going
to be a wide open league like it was last year,
and I think it'll come down to the final couple weeks.
But yeah, I love where I see its position right now,

(20:01):
especially already having a Big Twelve win under their belt
with that went over in Ireland against Kansas State.

Speaker 5 (20:06):
Obviously, Arizona, you know, relatively new to the Big Twelve,
and the teams haven't even played each other since nineteen
sixty eight, so it's not like there's much familiarity there.
What's it going to be like for the U of
a to go into a Jack Trice Stadium, what should
we expect.

Speaker 12 (20:19):
It'll be a great environment. We've got a white out
for this game. It's night game, which are always really
special at Jack Trice Stadium. I'm not convinced it's sold
out yet.

Speaker 6 (20:29):
But it will be.

Speaker 12 (20:30):
I'm sure sixty one five hundred it'll be packed. And
it's the second biggest stadium in the Big.

Speaker 6 (20:35):
Twelve right now, behind BYU, So.

Speaker 12 (20:39):
It'll be a great home environment for Iowa State. And
you know, I love the way Arizona's playing with a
veteran quarterback and Fefieda. And you've got two third year
starting quarterbacks and rock obacks and Noah Fafida. One was
the Pack twelve freshman of the year two years ago
and one was the Big twelve freshman of the year
two years ago. So it's a great matchup. I think

(20:59):
it's going to be really exciting, and I expect this
game to come down to the wire like a lot
of Iowa State's games do.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
Yeah, well, that's been the case. I think a lot
of people thought Iowa State was going to be at
the top of the top of the list. I think
that hasn't changed. But to that. Many people thought they
would have been more dominant, Like that first game Kansas State, Okay,
that was a little struggle, but they still won. And
then some of the other games, how do you see
they've played to this point. Yeah, I don't.

Speaker 12 (21:25):
Think And Matt Campbell would be the first to say
of this, They're never going to just line up in
out talent people, you know, top to bottom. They're not
a Texas or in Oklahoma where they could, you know,
And so they're going to win a lot of close games.
If they're going to have a great season, they're going
to win a.

Speaker 6 (21:38):
Lot of close games.

Speaker 12 (21:40):
There was a stretch from twenty twenty one through part
of twenty twenty three where Iowa State was one and
twelve in one possession games and they still managed to
win enough games to go to a couple.

Speaker 6 (21:49):
Of bowl games in there.

Speaker 13 (21:50):
But you know, they're in a lot.

Speaker 12 (21:51):
Of close games. And since then they've gone nine and
one in one possession game. So the last ten they've
won nine of them. And that's the difference between an
eleven wins season last year and maybe a six or
seven win season in some of those other years. And
I think one of the reasons they have confidence in
those close games.

Speaker 6 (22:08):
Is Rockoback.

Speaker 12 (22:09):
He's led six game winning drives in his career and
he's just a junior. And when the balls in his
hands late in games. I think Ioway State fans and
players and coaches feel really good about their chances.

Speaker 2 (22:19):
He's the key. Is that somebody Arizona really has?

Speaker 12 (22:22):
I think so?

Speaker 6 (22:24):
Yeah.

Speaker 12 (22:24):
I think he really is for Ioway State because he's
a leader. He's a natural leader. The guy's rally around him.
He's very poised in clutch situations. He's not perfect, but
you know he's made a lot of plays with games
on the line, and so you know, it's the most
important position in football, and they've got a guy they
really trusted that spot.

Speaker 6 (22:44):
So I do think he's the key.

Speaker 2 (22:46):
Let me ask you a weird question because and I
can't compare where you're at to Tucson right now, But
in Tucson, for Arizona football specifically, it's very apathetic. Right
They might get forty thousand on a good day. You
have to win a lot for them to get more
than forty five. It doesn't happen all that often. Was
there a time recently that it was like that? Over there?

(23:07):
And now that they're winning consistently, I guess that now
it's all changed because of the winning.

Speaker 12 (23:14):
Well, the i Would State fan base has been pretty
loyal through thick and thin, I mean, and there have
been some down years. Believe me, we have the scars
to prove it. You know, there was a year that
I would stay when O ten and one, not that
long ago, and so fans have been pretty loyal through
even some tough times. But what's happened is the fan
base has continued to grow and got a great athletics

(23:35):
director and Jamie Pollard obviously the best football coach we've
ever had at Matt Campbell. And the fan base continues
to grow around the state and outside the borders a
little bit. But you know, we've gone from a you know,
being happy with forty thousand in the stadium to now
where you're getting sixty one thousand just about every single game.
So it's continued to get bigger and better. And you know,

(23:58):
obviously in the state of Iowa, college teams are a
very big deal. You don't have professional sports to compete with,
and so people want to support Iowa or Iowa State,
and so you have that built in advantage to really
grow your fan base, and that's exactly what's happened.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
We're talking real quick to John Walters, the voice of
the Cyclones out in Iowa State. Go ahead.

Speaker 5 (24:17):
I was going to say, you guys, how about can
we switch real quick to basketball, because that was I
wanted to be some good games last year and then
I always say, comes to Tucson this year, So yeah,
that should be a fun one too. I thought it
was late in the season two, like in March.

Speaker 12 (24:29):
Yeah, I think it's March second. Yeah, it's March second.
And still some speaking of scars, some memories of love
hitting that three quarter court shot and getting that game
to overtime and then just continuing to go off in
the overtime. YEA, what a great college basketball game that one.
It was Franfreschill is still talking about it. But that

(24:49):
was a game that kind of I wouldn't say the
railed Iowa State season, but certainly got it off the
rails just a little bit where they struggled from that
point forward, and they were really rolling when they went
down there. They were a ranked second or third in
the country and they were at fifteen and one or
something like that. And suffered that loss and then had
a hard time kind of getting.

Speaker 6 (25:07):
It back together after that.

Speaker 12 (25:08):
But yeah, a great, great game, and then I would
say was able to win the return matchup and Ames
late in the season. But yeah, two very high quality
programs that are certainly going to be right up there
competing in the Big twelve standings and two great games
a year ago and hopefully another great game down there
this year.

Speaker 2 (25:26):
It should be fun. Yeah, yeah, no question. For a
guy who covered the Arizona in the Pac twelve for
all these years Pack ten back in the early nineties,
this is fantastic because every game is like that. You
never know it could be anybody and those games and
you've been in the league for a long time, so
you must have must really enjoyed calling the basketball games.

(25:48):
I do.

Speaker 12 (25:48):
And I think one thing that's overwhelmingly that I've heard
from the newer programs that are in the league is that, man,
everywhere you go, people really care about the game. The
crowds are great, everybody's really into it. And that's what
makes the Big twelve special.

Speaker 6 (26:02):
It really is.

Speaker 12 (26:03):
And so Arizona reminded Mckelsoner reminded me of Allan Field
ows and Lawrence was some environment that was there that night.
It was tremendous, and so they fit right in, you know,
and it's it's really cool to see that. I love
going into places where people care and it makes it
that much harder to win, but when you do win
at those places, it's that much more satisfying. So you know,

(26:25):
that's a great, great addition to the Big Twelve Basketball
Conference Arizona and others as well. By U has obviously
been a great audition, and you know, it's just fun.
I love going places where people are passionate about their teams.

Speaker 2 (26:38):
Where was because you've been to all these places and
you kind of mentioned them already, But is there a
special place that maybe intimidates better than others? Maybe Allen
Field Allan Field House.

Speaker 6 (26:50):
Yeah, that's got to be at the top of the list.

Speaker 12 (26:52):
I mean, it's just it's incredible how loud it is
to begin with, but then they pump more noise in
and it's just deafening in there. And you know, when
you go in there and win, you know you've accomplished
something pretty special. And I would say it's actually one
there more than any other Big Twelve team. It's hard
it's really hard to do, but when you do it,
it's a pretty special feeling. So yeah, that on the

(27:14):
basketball side, I would say that certainly is. And then
you know, football wise, there's a lot of really cool
stadiums in the Big Twelve right now, and a lot
of great home environments. There's a lot of places where
it's really really difficult to win, and what we talked
about earlier, fan bases that are engaged, they care about
the outcome, that support their teams. It's really a fun
league to be in.

Speaker 2 (27:34):
Well, John, we know you got to go. We appreciate
your time. We'll probably get a hold of you during
the hoop season. Take care of don't take it easy
on the cat fans out there.

Speaker 12 (27:44):
Well, I hope they come up. I think they'll really enjoy.
It's going to be a beautiful day here, mid seventies
during the day and in the evening it'll probably get
down in the sixties. But it's going to be awesome,
a great environment, and I think you'll you'll enjoy watching
it on TV for sure down there.

Speaker 2 (27:57):
Great That means Jayve and I are going in our
car driving right now and Seve degree whether that will
do anything for that it's still still in the nineties
here today.

Speaker 13 (28:07):
Thank you John be Well, all right, thank you guys.

Speaker 2 (28:11):
John Walters from the Iowa State to the Cyclones. No good.
Good to have him on the show, kind of preview
what's going to happen this weekend. I really don't know.
Here's the thing, I don't know how good Arizona is,
and I lean on I still need a lot to see. Yeah,
and I still don't know how good I Wish State is.
There's still the same thing. We're gonna learn a lot.

Speaker 5 (28:31):
Yeah, just you know, probably real quick to see how
they adapt to the crowd, into just the environment and
team playing like you know, it's not defeated.

Speaker 2 (28:38):
I was a lot against him. Yeah, I wouldn't be
surprised if everyzone gets blown out. I also wouldn't be
surprised if they pull one out, if that makes any sense.

Speaker 3 (28:45):
I think a blowout would be more surprising to me,
just because I feel like these teams are very similar,
like in terms of what they try to do, you
know what I mean, Like great ground game, you know,
like with running backs and stuff like that. Obviously they
have great quarterbacks, and then they have a really good defense,
you know, what I mean. I mean, just looking at
the record, the only team that they've beaten by more

(29:06):
than eight points is South Dakota State. Right, They've been
tighten every game and so you know that that and
you know Arizona has in the Kansas State game specifically,
and I think that is in part just to because
you know, you try to you try to play with
the lead, control the ball, not necessarily put a ton
of points up, but just kind of like slowly kind

(29:27):
of suffocate the other team.

Speaker 2 (29:29):
That's what they do. Yeah, outside of that, you're talking
about the Kansastate.

Speaker 3 (29:33):
Game, well, Kansas State, and I feel like I always say,
does the same thing. Just looking at the record or
the previous games for the MISS season.

Speaker 5 (29:39):
I mean, Arizona's receivers are doing quite well so far,
the running backs, I mean really the playmakers have been
playing pretty well.

Speaker 2 (29:47):
Yeah, they that can continue with that be fun to watch. Well.
To Brian's point, if the deal with the phone difficulties,
all they can't do is have that penalies. They have
that penalties, you know they're going to have them. They
those things just don't go away, especially if you have
so many.

Speaker 4 (30:04):
And I'm talking about offensive playing in the hostile environment too, right, yeah.

Speaker 2 (30:07):
Right, and the special teams sometimes that continues. Yeah, you
know you talk about okay, we know our mistakes. Well,
sometimes you just can't fix the mistakes, yeah, for sure.
But other than that, Dave, to your point, I think
the defense has been obviously very very good for sure.
And if the wide receivers and Noah has a fantastic game.

Speaker 5 (30:25):
Can protect the quarterback and not have holding penalties, you know,
it is shown they can move the football pretty well.

Speaker 6 (30:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (30:30):
Well, this line we said it was sixty six and
a half right after starting seven and a half, went
to five and a half, now six and a half.
It'll probably stay there. I don't know which way I'd go.

Speaker 4 (30:40):
But it's exciting though.

Speaker 2 (30:42):
Well you know what, three weeks in, it beats the
alternative because we've seen the alternative, we're still talking about them,
which is good. You're exactly right, especially.

Speaker 5 (30:50):
With basketball right around the corner and the Red Blue
next week. I mean, there's you know, some of the
attention is gonna paid from football just for a few minutes.

Speaker 2 (30:57):
Right, Yeah, you've been here long enough, David, and j
says this all the time. There was only is a
football town he just doesn't know it yet. You know
what I'm saying. You've probably seen some great I've seen
some great seasons. It's so fleeting though, you know, here,
there and then there maybe five or six years after
being here for almost forty Yeah.

Speaker 5 (31:17):
Well you go through how many coaches that they've gone
through in well, thirteen years.

Speaker 2 (31:20):
You's got Dick well Sean, oh this last time at
the end of the teen years, and Dick and then
he went to Stoops Stoops and then he went to
h Rod. Someone just Jed just like faith.

Speaker 6 (31:35):
Yeah. Guy.

Speaker 5 (31:36):
So, I mean it's kind of hard to be consistent
when you're switching coaches basically every three years on average.

Speaker 2 (31:41):
And let's see year Stoop's gone and none of them
left on there. Well, Jed left on it, all right,
one of the guys who left on the role. Okay, Well,
how are you sure we're football town? Maybe he wishes
the football town. I think he says there's a potential.
I don't know about that. Maybe we can get calls

We gotta call des Moine. Hello, you're on the air

Speaker 2 (36:51):
Who's this?

Speaker 13 (36:53):
Hey, Steve, Hey Dave, this is don don.

Speaker 2 (36:55):
Tell me, tell me, give me your wisdom.

Speaker 13 (36:57):
Don I stilln't think Arizona can win this game.

Speaker 2 (37:02):
You said that last week, didn't you.

Speaker 13 (37:05):
I did.

Speaker 6 (37:05):
I did.

Speaker 13 (37:06):
I've been saying it. I've been saying it because you know,
all the Iowa was stayed apologists, all other kids. Oh,
they love they love the close games, to be honest,
in football, I don't love a close game in basketball.
In basketball, I like a close game. I like the

(37:28):
back and forth because you can make up for it.
But in football, you're in a close game, and if
you have a team that can run the ball, and
if we have our number one guy coming back, I
don't know if he's coming back or whatever. If you
have one team that can run the ball, that close
game just went away because you don't get the ball

(37:51):
back whereas in basketball you'll get it back in twenty
five or thirty seconds. So I still think that Arizona,
if they can clean things up. Now, I heard you
say earlier today that you know, those holding penalty, they're
not going to go away completely. But if we can
clean it up a little bit, if we if we

(38:12):
can improve, then I think this team is good enough
to go up there, stay within themselves and you know,
circle the wagons in the hostile plays and you know
the lines is coming coming down our way. I think
they can win this game. If you don't think that

(38:33):
it's out of reach.

Speaker 2 (38:34):
Give me on a scale one to ten, you seven
mm eight.

Speaker 13 (38:39):
I'm about as I'm about a seven sevens well one,
I'm a ten that I know that they can win
this game? Would I bet it? I never bet on
my own teams, because it's every time anytime I've ever
bet on my own team, I've lost that bet. But

(39:00):
I know they can win this game. Will they win
this game? I'm closer to a seven seven four, seven
point four?

Speaker 2 (39:10):
Okay?

Speaker 13 (39:11):
I mean because because I've heard, I've heard and seen
other videos of Iowa State, you know, media people and everything,
and they go, this is this is where they play. Well,
that's a dangerous place to play, especially with a team
like Arizona. Like Arizona that looks like they're turning things around.

(39:35):
Now the head coach is in charge, not the nil
now the head coach who there's still a lot of
supposed fans that are still saying it's not him, except
that he's the one that put the guys in place.
And what I'm saying is is the coordinators this, and
that he's still running the show. I don't mind a

(39:56):
CEO type coach as long as the guys that he
puts in charge of handling business are handling their business,
and so far they are. So I didn't I didn't
like I didn't like Daggy last game because he went
away from the run for whatever reason.

Speaker 6 (40:13):
Why.

Speaker 2 (40:13):
Yeah, we were not why we were on a text
I think past game where they were dominating on the
the with the run game, and then he had the
half back pass with the running back pass the.

Speaker 13 (40:25):
RECEI if they can't if they can't stop you, if
they can't stop the run in the first quarter, make
them stop you in the second quarter, and then you
make them stop in the third quarter. Halfway through the
third quarter, they quit, and those the two touchdowns. One

(40:48):
the touchdown that the quarterback got, he wasn't in yet,
so we would have had another shot to hold him
to a field goal at that point, and there was
a holding call on the on the seventy five yard play.
So I still I don't hold the two touchdowns against
the defense at all at this point, because there was
extenuating certain they would have had a chance on the

(41:08):
second drive. On the short drive, they would have had
a chance to keep him out because he wasn't in.
So I I like what this team is doing. Win
or lose this game, it's not gonna it's not gonna
break them if they play a good game. No, it's
not gonna break this team. I mean, this is a
game that they can lose and still hold and still

(41:31):
the rest of the season is still in.

Speaker 2 (41:33):
Is that all in play? That I totally agree with him,
and I think that's the best thing that's been said.
If they play him tough, play him close, and have
a chance to win, I don't think that's gonna be
a disappointment. It'll be a disappointment in the lost column,
but it still gives you hope. Right with Oklahoma State
coming up well and with I can't remember who's after that, YU,
so still.

Speaker 13 (41:51):
Hope, right, yeah, and and and then the caller earlier
that was talking about Texas Tech and how they handled
Utah well. For three quarters that game was up in
the air because the deep both defenses, both of those
defenses were playing out of their heads. It was crazy

(42:14):
if in the in the Utah game they gave up
the ball and then it was like sack sack forced
an incomplete pass and then it was a punt on
like fourth and twenty five or some malarkey, and then
at the end of the game, Texas Tech ran away
from them, and so it wasn't it wasn't a full

(42:37):
blown blowout that game. So I'm just glad we don't
play Texas Tech because and I would have to ask
Jay this, because I have a deep I have a
fear from childhood and I don't know why, because we
weren't by the time I realized by the time Arizona
went to the Pac ten and everything else, I mean

(42:57):
that was seventy five, I was ten years old. But
every time I heard Texas Tech, I had like this
weird fear about them because back in the whack days
and before that they used to smoke us all the time.

Speaker 2 (43:11):
Yeah well that, yeah.

Speaker 13 (43:16):
I mean Texas Tech isna to mea wives. And then
here's the other thing. In whatever sport you want. I
don't care that they're having recent success. This is all
recency biased. Who the heck is Iowa State. If you're
going to talk about a strong school from Iowa, it
wasn't from Ames. It was those the Hawkeyes from Iowa City.

(43:40):
Iowa State is new is new money. It's new money.
So that that you know, it's not like they've had
this long old history of that poo that that to
me is it doesn't count. It really doesn't tell.

Speaker 12 (43:56):
Me, tell me if I'm wrong, if I'm wrong.

Speaker 13 (44:00):
It's true, they're new they're Boise State.

Speaker 5 (44:02):
Oh didn't John Walters say they were like they were
like one ten and one. Yeah, two years ago it
was Arizona exactly.

Speaker 12 (44:09):
Well that was in that was what he said.

Speaker 13 (44:10):
What that was in one score games? Okay, that's all
fine and good, But Iowa State, I hardly knew you
were who you are. The only time I knew them
was when they were playing.

Speaker 6 (44:21):
Iowa on the game during rivalry week.

Speaker 2 (44:24):
Yeah, yeah, well, thank you, so thanks for calling in,
you know, yeah, appreciate your time.

Speaker 13 (44:30):
Guys, Yes, thank you.

Speaker 6 (44:31):
I had to jump on.

Speaker 2 (44:32):
I checked my my bingo cards poo poos, and said,
today I wait on the list. Things are collars saying.

Speaker 5 (44:41):
My biggest fear is Arizona getting off to a slow
start and which all going crazy possible and just losing
all kinds of momentum. Maybe I'm being a doom sayer,
but like you know, if they come out for a
series and throwing interception or something like that, or just
show nothing, which is possible. Yeah, I mean they've had
good success at home against teams that you know, haven't

(45:02):
been the greatest.

Speaker 2 (45:03):
Kansas State still pretty good.

Speaker 5 (45:05):
But yeah, let's see how they do in a tough environment,
a better team.

Speaker 2 (45:08):
A lot to prove, yeah, a lot to prove with
nothing that nothing. The resume doesn't.

Speaker 5 (45:13):
Look that great right now from both starts, so it's
not even I can't even make copies of it yet,
right right?

Speaker 2 (45:19):
Or where have you worked?

Speaker 6 (45:21):
State?

Speaker 16 (45:22):
Uh?

Speaker 2 (45:23):
Another call? Okay, Hello, you're on the airline of the ball.
Who's this Nico? Where do you been you?

Speaker 12 (45:33):
Hey?

Speaker 21 (45:33):
Man?

Speaker 2 (45:33):
I have a life, man, We're not on that life list.
I thought we were in speed dial.

Speaker 21 (45:41):
Man, You're important, man, but not that.

Speaker 2 (45:43):
Okay, what you what do you have for us? What
are you doing?

Speaker 6 (45:46):
Hey?

Speaker 1 (45:47):
Man?

Speaker 21 (45:47):
The Cats win this weekend?

Speaker 2 (45:49):
Wow? Okay some optimistic fans. Yeah, no, we're calling from Tucson.
Nico's Nika's on top of things. Why do you get
what do you have that feeling, Nico, man?

Speaker 21 (45:59):
Because I've watched that was sate Man. They're born and
slappy football team and they win. Luckily, they're just lucky.
Run out of look this week.

Speaker 2 (46:07):
Okay, No, Nico knows.

Speaker 21 (46:09):
Nico knows, and Steve second thing. Yes, you don't need
to talk baseball on this show, man, you go.

Speaker 2 (46:16):
I love you man.

Speaker 1 (46:16):
You know.

Speaker 2 (46:19):
Ray and I will take care of that. It's okay, Yes,
Nico knows. You know, White talk about stuff like that, right.

Speaker 21 (46:24):
Nico, nobody cares. Playoff start and then I even then
I don't really care.

Speaker 2 (46:30):
You're you're, you're, You're exactly right. I firmly believe that
it's like the NBA. I mean, we don't talk about
the NBA very much during the regular season until the playoffs,
and I know those people, they don't care until it's over.

Speaker 21 (46:42):
Right, you can play too many damn games. But yes, Steve,
I do have a complaint.

Speaker 2 (46:45):
Then well, go ahead, go ahead, Nico. When there's good,
there's bad.

Speaker 21 (46:49):
Hey, man, you gotta you gotta slow down on this
u of a basketball stuf. It's like every day with you, man.

Speaker 2 (46:56):
We're almost there, We're almost there. We got next week.
Blue you go into the Tommy Tommy concert with shot
and now no, no, no, it's too he's outgrown. That
is outgrown. That okay, good to know. Yeah, take you in,

(47:17):
Thank you. Hey, next time I'm in, Well, I don't
go as a as a as a reporter like you.
I may not go next next week because you might
go and lou me again. Uh, Nico, if you go,
let me know if you're going to go as a
fan so I can run into you. Maybe going to
Jay's tail good or something. Because so it was good
to talk to Nico.

Speaker 4 (47:36):
What's up?

Speaker 7 (47:36):
I mean.

Speaker 2 (47:39):
He's right though, I mean there's he's got some philosophy
in there.

Speaker 4 (47:42):
Yeah no, And I mean he's not afraid.

Speaker 2 (47:45):
He thinks my mind.

Speaker 3 (47:48):
It's interesting because kind of like how he said they
play the well, he called it boring, but it's it
feels like Big ten football, you know what I mean,
like three yards cloud dust, Like I was saying, like
three yards cloud of dust.

Speaker 2 (47:59):
And everyone's the same team.

Speaker 4 (48:00):
And that's what I mean.

Speaker 3 (48:01):
That's why it's such an interesting matchup because it's like
it's it's it's gonna come down to both lines.

Speaker 4 (48:07):
That's easy.

Speaker 2 (48:08):
It could be twenty to seven, it could be twenty
to seventeen, seventeen to fourteen, it.

Speaker 3 (48:11):
Could be ten to three, like ten to three, you
know what I mean, like but could be. I think
the scary thing is more than anything is like it
is rock Obec. Not just because like he's a great
thrower and a great leader, but you know, we were
staate like Hawaii. I think Arizona played Hawaii so they
can kind of, you know, get used to mobile quarterbacks.

Speaker 4 (48:30):
The quarterbacks hurt with a bum ankle.

Speaker 3 (48:32):
Weaver State gave it showed us like what a mobile
quarterback can maybe like look like against this defense. And
then I don't think Kansas State really did because I
mean I think about Avery Johnson right last year ran
all over the Cats and this year that I mean
there was an easy first down that he could have
gotten and he chose to pass it instead. So it's
like it doesn't really feel like they've played like a

(48:53):
like a real good duel threat quarterback.

Speaker 4 (48:55):
And I think rock Obeck is that.

Speaker 5 (48:58):
He's gonna have a lot of pride. He's gonna be home.
It's on TV. I mean, you know, it's a big
deal for them too. They came for them or undefeated,
and they want to kind of prove that their early seasons,
you know, easy close games have not been the way
they're going to play the rest of the year.

Speaker 2 (49:11):
So let's not look past that on Friday and Friday,
I think we're going to try to get one of
the beat writers who's kind of not not you know,
John was perfect. You know, John Walters gave us you
a kind of a preview three days four days before
the game now, and he's he's on their side. Obviously,
he's seen the voice. He's going to be positive, and
he was. He was, he was good. We got three minutes. Uh,
But now get a beat writer who might be more

(49:33):
not sensible, but you know, more on the fence or whatever.
Who just who do we talk to last week? It
was Kanda State. I don't think you were there a Dave,
but the beat writer says everyone was gonna beat them.
I mean they're not any good right away. When the
when your own beat team, because they're usually biased to
the beat team, says that you know that that team

(49:54):
is not any good. So it's a good little market
too for newspapers.

Speaker 5 (49:58):
I mean, he really don't have the more is a
big city, but you got, you know, two big universities,
two big conferences. I mean, it's an interesting sports market
for the fans too. Yeah, I'm sure a lot of
die hards on both both sides.

Speaker 4 (50:12):
Yeah, I would imagine.

Speaker 3 (50:13):
I mean just because like you know, kind of like
how John Walter said, you know, there's no there's no
professional team, so it's like the fans, whichever side you're on,
you're gonna show out for that side. And so that's
that's Uh, that's gonna be really fun.

Speaker 5 (50:25):
Do you remember when Iowa came here once for football
and they I think they rented the Tucson Convention Center
for like a pregame party. There was so many fans
that came, like from the Phoenix area. Just they have
a million of alums in the areas in the state.
So I'm gonna guess it.

Speaker 2 (50:39):
I don't know. I would think. I always say it
also has a lot of fans in the States. I
think Jay had said or somebody had said on the
radio that they had bought season tickets. They had bot
season tickets here at you made just so they can
come and watch the game on game. They could always
get rid of the tickets later, yeah, to sell to whomever. Yeah,
and they didn't have a fantastic crowd. That was that
was that? Who's the coach? You still know who was?

(51:00):
It wasn't? It was during this Stoops time? Right, Hayden? No, Hayden,
who's the stoop?

Speaker 4 (51:05):
Who's it was?

Speaker 2 (51:06):
Stoops might have been? So who's the one? I himself
remember he went to?

Speaker 5 (51:10):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (51:10):
Yeah, yeah, So who's the coach? I don't remember obviously
now what's Friday? But it was twenty years ago. What's
a guy's name? Kirk? You think he was still there? Though?

Speaker 4 (51:18):
Y god, I think he's the longest ten you're pretty sure?

Speaker 2 (51:23):
Okay, yeah, okay, but no, those is that's a pretty
rabbit fund base both sides. I guess I am getting
old because I'm going from Friday. That's but it's not
long ago to me. It was a long time. Okay,
we gotta go. Hey, thanks dave Ye. Don't come in tomorrow.
Good Okay, take the day off. Ray you're coming in tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (51:41):
You gotta work. Yeah yeah, I gotta to.

Speaker 2 (51:43):
Pay the bill. Okay. Thanks about guys. I'll be back
tomorrow
