when I come in a building. Well, this is the
Hunley Huddle, brought to you by Novah Home Loans Man.
Speaker 3 (00:31):

We've been trying to do this for years and and
are you welcome? You're welcome. It's real.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Hey, this is agreeing to be a great show. Great
to be with you guys. You guys, one of my favorites.
Are two of my favorites as a group. It's the
Hundley Huddle. Let me ask you guys are played in
the NFL, big time college guys.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
You guys nervous at all for this show?
Speaker 4 (00:54):
Yeah, I'm very nervous because well you know, I mean,
actually it's my first time being in front to my
brother on the radio.
Speaker 3 (01:01):
And we're going back and forth, well doing this as far.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
As content going that way. So yeah, I just want
to make sure I'm making proud, that's all. Oh, look
at that, you're gonna start to cry. Not me.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
I'm excited. I'm not nervous. Yeah. Yeah, I enjoyed being
around my brother. Yeah. No, you guys, you guys are
a couple likewise.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
I'm sure this is the way I'm getting to heaven. Guys,
I thank you very much. Well, I'm looking forward to this.
We're going to talk about games, talk about life, talking
to Brennan. You did a great interview with Brennan here.
We'll get to that in the second segment. That'll be
a lot of fun. And we're going to talk to
one of your good friends, Randy Robbins.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
Oh my god, what a what an honor getting into
the ring.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Yes, yes, wait to give him a hug. How different
is this for you, Ricky? Giving your past experience with
the team, you're on the field, you're you know, coaching
them up whatever. Now you're doing this now you go
down to the game, and is that more relaxing?
Speaker 3 (01:57):
Is it? What is it for you?
Speaker 2 (01:59):
You know?
Speaker 4 (02:00):
Uh, in this phase of my life, it's all more relaxing.
You know, when you're on the field and you're coaching
and you're into it, it's intense. I mean, you know,
you want the guys to get in the right mindset,
and so there's a lot of things that that are
going on that that you have to be a part
of that that makes it kind of nerve wracking. That's
more being nervous than anything, because you're nervous for them
(02:22):
because you want them to do well. But in this role,
I mean, this is just a lot of fun being
able to share good information.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
So when you're on the sidelines or wherever you're going
to be, and I'm going to ask them about this
if you see this, uh that the kids that you've coached,
because there have been a few, right, they're still there.
Do they want to make you proud? You don't even
now if they see you you're not even on the sidelines.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Oh yeah you feel that. Yeah, kids and they say
watch me, coach, I got this one.
Speaker 4 (02:49):
Yeah. They'll always tuned in. And and that's where her
kids are. You know, they want to make you proud.
They want to make their you know, their family members proud.
So uh, they want to put their best out on
the field. And so it's a great opportunity for them
every game. So Lamart knows how they feel. I know
how the kids feel. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, and that's how
(03:09):
I feel right now. I want to make my big
brother proud, exactly. That's that's that's a good way of
putting it, Steve.
Speaker 3 (03:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
So we have six of these after today, we have
we're going to be all home games here at the
u of A. So that's gonna be a lot of fun.
We're on here for an hour, so it'll be a
quick hour. Uh, and we'll talk football.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Let's do it.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
A good opener, good opener. With Hawaii coming in, it's
a great opener.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
I mean, you know that Brennan has a lot of
familiarity with Hawaii, you know, you know, going to grad
school there, having friendships with coach Chang and you know,
and and all the relationships with coach Tomy coaching at Hawaii.
Speaker 3 (03:45):
Even Brennan, I think he started his coaching career there
is a GA.
Speaker 4 (03:49):
So this is a special game, you know, the Polynesian
Heritage Month kickoff. It's it's a lot of stuff. But
these guys are excited. But they're ready. Yeah, they're ready.
I mean, uh, you know, I watched the practices and
they are clicking on all cylinders. I mean, all they
have to do is, you know, do their job and
(04:10):
things will work.
Speaker 3 (04:11):
Out just fine. Do to both of you. Do you
remember your first game here? At you?
Speaker 4 (04:16):
The first first game? Yeah, how was it? It wasn't
much fun because I didn't start. I was I was
only playing special teams this first game and would get nervous. Probably, uh,
after the first play, the nerves go away. You know,
you're running down the field full speed on the kickoff,
and after that, you know, the nerves go away.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Do you tell as a coach, do you tell the
kids you know that'll happen and then it'll just go away? Yeah? Absolutely, yeah,
it always does a little. On how was it for you?
I was the same.
Speaker 4 (04:47):
I played special teams when I first got here. And
then I can recall because the first nap I was
on the field and it was only kickoff and and
you know, basically I ran down the field and and
I was part of the tackle. I made the tackle
this time. It wasn't we gotta check that. It wasn't
an assist. I made the tackle. So I felt like
(05:08):
I said he was part of the tackle. But he
was always as part of more tackles than anybody in
the history of Arizona football. Four hundred assisted tackle. Four
hundred put me in the record. But it's a record.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
It's a record. It'll never be taken. You get points
for that exactly.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
You know, you get one point four an assistant tackle,
you get three four tackle.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
No you don't, Yeah, you get one point four attackle
to say, I mean that made past this first hour
of this first show. That tackles the tackle.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
So Brennan having some relationships with the guys on the
other side, is that fun? Is it nerve wracking or
whatever it's going to be when you have friends on
the other side.
Speaker 3 (05:47):
You want to win, you want to.
Speaker 4 (05:49):
You want to you want to you want to play
your best, you want to execute. You know, you want
to be mistake free, and you want your.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Guys to perform at a high level. So it doesn't matter.
Speaker 4 (05:59):
I I think, you know, Brennan got a lot going
on emotionally now because the fact he coached on both sides, well,
coaching Arizona as well as coaching Hawaii. And also I
mean we we he got you know, the great God
of coach told me up in the sky watching down
on them.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
Also.
Speaker 4 (06:14):
You know, so I think coach Brennan, I mean he
might be a little nervous going into this game. Yeah,
you don't think that guy he gets you know, he's focused,
he's detailed. I see him operate, I see him work,
and you know, Hawaii is Hawaii. Okay, yes, so ain't
no being nervous. Hawaii is gonna be tough. They're gonna
(06:37):
be physical. You can't underestimate him. You can't think that
it's gonna be a pushover game.
Speaker 3 (06:41):
It's not.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
But you know, it's like if someone said, Steve, you
gotta fight big brother to eat tonight, I'm going to
tell you're gonna.
Speaker 3 (06:48):
Not eat it. You're gonna fight.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
No.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
No, I get that. So well.
Speaker 4 (06:50):
I'm not too much worried about Brennan. I'm worried about
the new coordinators. That's what I'm more worried about, as
far as how they're gonna come out here and how
they going to perform and what type of offense we're
going to see tonight. You know, because I mean I
look at the history of coach Daghi's offense at Marshall,
and I mean it was a running style offense there.
(07:13):
I mean, we got a great quarterback here, we got
some good running backs just as well. So I'm interested
to see where are we gonna go offensively with our
offensive coordinator as well as our defensive coordinator, because this
is something.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
New also for Gonzales.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
Hawaii played already last week they won to beat Stanford.
Who has an advantage or is there just neutral or
they've played a game Arizona has not, but they've seen
the tape.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
Yeah, we've seen the tape. But still you know, when
you tee it up, it's a new game.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
You know.
Speaker 4 (07:42):
Here's here's the bottom line when it comes to a
game like this, Okay, I don't think that it's not
the first rodeo for coach Dagi or coach Goundales. Coaches
Gonzales's coached against Hawaii many times, and so they know
that they have to be prepared. They never have to
be ready to have a good game plan and get
after the key to beating Hawaii and any team that
(08:03):
you play, you got to win third downs on offense.
You've got to win third downs on defense and control
the ball in the field position. The team that doesn't
turn the ball over will win. Seventy five percent of
the time. Teams that don't turn the ball over that
are in a plus margin when it comes to turnovers
win the game.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
So as players, and I'll go back to you as
coach Ricky style points, does it matter you win by ten,
you win by twenty, win.
Speaker 4 (08:30):
Especially the first game. I mean, you have to just
win the game. Have to win this particular game and
set the tone. Now, I would have to go back
on what you asked the question as far as is
there a difference as far as being the fact that
Hawaii already played one game versus us. I think Hawaii
does have an edge because they had that opportunity to
(08:51):
play someone different and fresh. We have not, and so
that edge to me comes into play when the discipline
of the actual game itself take place. Are we going
to be in the right frame of mind to eliminate
stupid penalties, eliminate all sizes, eliminate personal penalties if we
can put ourselves in in that frame of mind. Because
(09:12):
we haven't played yet, we haven't played anyone yet, Hawaii
has so I think they do have an advantage on
that aspect of it. So we have to give that
to Hawaii on that I think you even hear in
an interview with coach Brittan he is he reminds me
of coach To me, he reminds me of Coach Smith
when it comes to discipline, and even in the practices,
(09:34):
when they execute a great play and it's a big
pass for a touchdown and someone moves or jumps off side,
they don't stop to play. They let you finish the
play and then you come back and everybody does upset,
up doowns.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
So it's always in their mindset. Man, we got to
do it right, We got to execute. We got to
be flawless if we're gonna win these games.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
And the same thing when it comes to defense, Coaches
Gonzales is always on these guys about running to the ball,
pursuit and tackle, pursuit and tackle.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
I love the drill that coach Soelvio does with the
d lineman.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
Man, they're running to the football and the balls thrown
as if though they're on the football field.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Are your impressions now that you're not on the field
all the time, because you're still going to practice any different?
Speaker 3 (10:15):
Now?
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Are you more impressed less impressed? You know now that
you're an observer does that make sense.
Speaker 4 (10:20):
I'm super impressed because I was not a fan, a
true believer that we could take sixty some guys and
mowl them and get them ready for a season.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Yeah, that quick refer to the sixty first, who are they? Well,
the transfer the transfer portals.
Speaker 4 (10:37):
You got sixty one transfer port of kids, and so
you know, you when you take that many individuals, that's
a half of a football team.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
I mean.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
And but when you look at the transfer porter the
pluses is that instead of getting a Steve Rivera from
high school, I got a Steve Rivera who's a veteran
announcer for the last twenty years.
Speaker 3 (10:57):
Yeah, he's not behind the years.
Speaker 2 (11:00):
You shouldn't know what And a lot of these kids
aren't the end of their football career.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
It's either do it now or never. Football ins for
you next year if you're a senior.
Speaker 2 (11:08):
You know.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
And you make a good point there in REGARDSS to
some of these kids that are key transferred players for us,
particularly the center. You know, Okay, I think KB the
center that's coming in, it's very it's gonna be important.
Speaker 3 (11:20):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
With that, we're gonna go to break, We're gonna listen
to your interview with Coach Brennan on the other.
Speaker 4 (11:25):

to or listen to Brent Brennan from Mike Guy.
Speaker 3 (16:45):
Ricky.
Speaker 4 (16:47):
Ricky Hunley with the Hundley Huddle Here with Coach Brennan
coach Brennan, I'm.
Speaker 3 (16:52):
On the field every day I hear redline. Can you
explain to the people what is redline?
Speaker 6 (16:58):
Redline is really simple and so so, you know, I
think like so many college programs, they have so many
slogans on the wall, they have so many sayings on
the wall, and none of those things mean anything to
the players because there's just too many. And so we
try to make redline really simple. And so we broke
it down to accountability, effort, and execution and made those
(17:21):
things easy to define. So for the effort, we define
it one hundred hundred, one hundred miles an hour, one
hundred percent of the time. So while we're talking to
our players, are you playing hard? Are you one hundred hundred?
They understand what that is. There's no confusion. It's very
simple execution. Every player says they want to score more
touchdowns or catch more passes or make more tackles.
Speaker 3 (17:39):
Well, prove it. Like, if you're going to do that,
you have to prove it. You have to know what
to do.
Speaker 6 (17:44):
You have to lift the weights, you have to be
in physical condition, you have to be ready to go.
And you get a chance to prove it every single
day at practice. And so that execution piece for us
is prove it. And so that's how we define it.
So every kid that walks into my office, the second
team guy that says, hey, I should be playing over
Ricky Huntley, you know, I'm like, well, so you think
you're better than him? And he says yes, and I
(18:06):
say good, Then prove it, show us so you can
do it, which they can't because Ricky's too good or
he was too good, you know what I mean. But
then and then the last piece is accountability. And accountability
is something that this generation, anybody with young people right now,
knows how hard it is for them to be accountable
to others or to hold each other accountable on any
level that has any real demand to it.
Speaker 3 (18:26):
So that's own it, fix it.
Speaker 6 (18:28):
So if you make a mistake, you own a mistake
and then you fix it next play. We're not gonna
let mistakes linger. We're not gonna make duplicate mistakes. We're
not gonna make excuses when we make make mistakes where
it say hey, that's right, I screwed that up. I'm
gonna fix it right now. So really simple, that's what
redline is. Simple for our players to understand when we
talk about redline, they know we're talking about effort, execution,
(18:48):
and accountability and.
Speaker 3 (18:49):
There's no confusion. Awesome.
Speaker 4 (18:51):
Now, I watch practices every day and boy, you remind
me a lot of two of the greatest coaches as
ever coached here Arizona football. I stick to me and
Larry Smith. And then and the part of it that
catches me is the discipline part of it. The other day,
you ran a great play, no one completed, the pass
was along when somebody jumped off side, and you had
them all doing updown. So talk a little bit about that.
Speaker 6 (19:13):
Yeah, I think that that that part of it is obviously,
you know, those two guys are legends, legendary football coaches
in college football, not just here at the U of A.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
But you know, I think the discipline piece is important.
Speaker 6 (19:27):
I think that's that gets lost in the shuffle because
you know, everybody wants to be friends with their players,
or everybody wants to be friends with their own kids.
So as parents, we don't want to discipline our kids
or whatever.
Speaker 3 (19:38):
But I know that the way, you know, to.
Speaker 6 (19:40):
Get where we want to go is by having an
incredibly disciplined team. We need a tough, minded, discipline football team,
and you build that in the practice environment. And if
we're going to complete a big pass and have it
come back because somebody jumps off side, right, if we're
going to make a third down stop or get an interception,
and then some defensive lineman jumps offside because we don't
have the point and the discipline it takes to make
(20:01):
big plays, then that's something that's gonna be my fault.
And so we're going to eliminate that best we can
in the practice environment.
Speaker 3 (20:07):
Very good. Now, I've been around with a lot of
great coaches.
Speaker 4 (20:10):
I mean I played with Gene Stallins and Dan Reeves
and and Shanahan and archl You've made some monster hires,
you know, and and I see these guys and I
see it every day. But tell our listeners about those
three coordinators you've hired.
Speaker 6 (20:27):
Well, start Wars special teams coordinator Craig Niver. You know,
he's when I was looking at this, I was I
was hoping to bring somebody in who's just going to
focus on special teams. I think sometimes assistant coaches are
you know, it's it's the receiver coach, and he's also
the special teams coach. Or's the linebacker coach and he's
also the special teams coach, and it just gets too divided.
He gets too deluded. He's trying to you know, work
(20:48):
on defense, third down defense, and he also has to
get special teams going. I just want someone who wants
to kick ass in the special teams and Coach Niver
has been a special teams coordinator at Texas and at USC.
Speaker 3 (20:58):
He's held that role in big places he's go to.
Speaker 6 (21:00):
He's gone head to head with really good people, so
I knew I was bringing somebody in with real expertise.
The thing that really sold me on him was like
in the when he presented to our staff, the energy,
the enthusiasm that he presented to our coaching staff when
we interviewed him was lights out.
Speaker 3 (21:16):
It was big time.
Speaker 6 (21:17):
And then he carries out with the players like if
you sit in one of our special teams meeting, like
he's going to get you going, You're going to feel
pumped up. And then with with you know, with coach Gonzalez,
He's a coach that I coached against him before many times.
Speaker 3 (21:29):
His defense was always incredibly hard to prepare for.
Speaker 6 (21:32):
There was always a lot of they did a great
job of getting to the quarterback, and I think quarterback
pressure is one of the absolute most important things that
the defense can do. And they're also good against the run,
and I think in this conference, you got to be
able to get out to the quarterback and you got
to be able to.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
Stop the run.
Speaker 6 (21:45):
So those are things that I that I'm confident over
time with the right coaching, with the staff being together,
and with the right personnel, that we can do those things.
With coach Gonzalez on the defensive side, and then coach
Daigy has been just a great addition to this staff.
He has great assertive leadership for offensive football team. He's
very very clear understanding of what he's looking for and
how he wants to build it. The staff is totally
(22:07):
bought in, The players are totally bought in. You can
see the players. They're in his office all the time,
they're asking him questions, they want to be around him,
and he has got incredible energy. So when you combine
his expertise of quarterback play and what we're doing schematically,
just with also his assertive leadership.
Speaker 3 (22:23):
I think we're gonna have another really great leader there.
Speaker 6 (22:25):
So as tough as those decisions were, I do feel
like we put great people in those positions to lead
our football team.
Speaker 4 (22:31):
Right now, what can you tell us You've played this
team a lot of times, so you have a lot
of history with Hawaii.
Speaker 3 (22:35):
What can you tell us about this opponent? Come out?
Speaker 6 (22:37):
This team always plays hard and they never say die.
That's that's what I can tell you. They always play
hard and then they're gonna fight your ass to the
last second of that game. And that's how it's always
been with those Hawaii teams. I have a ton of
respect for the state of Hawaii, for the football, the
high school football's played on Hawaii, on the state of Hawaii.
And I have a ton of respect for Timmy Chang
and what they're doing it with the Hawaii football program.
(23:00):
And obviously they got a big win last week against Stanford,
which is a great start for their season.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
And so I'm excited for Timmy and I'm excited.
Speaker 6 (23:06):
I'm excited for them to come out here, you know,
But most importantly, I'm excited to see what our team
does when we take the field Saturday.
Speaker 4 (23:13):
Great oh And I understand there are some connections there
in Hawaii, a lot of connections your brother Timmy coach
Tommy graduate school.
Speaker 3 (23:21):
Yeah, yeah, absolutely, I started my career there.
Speaker 6 (23:23):
That was my first My first college job was was
I was a graduate assistant at the University of Hawaii.
Got a picture up there, me and the receivers. I
coached the receivers that year. Great group of young men.
A couple of them I still talk to.
Speaker 3 (23:36):
But it's a but. I but you know, we weren't
good and we went through a really tough time. But
it was a great intro to college football.
Speaker 6 (23:43):
But yeah, my cousin Cole was obviously just one of
the most incredible players there during his time. They had
a great run there, and then being in San Jose
State as an assistant and a head coach, and then
Oregon State as an assistant. I think I've coached against
Hawaii fifteen times, maybe maybe more so. I played a
lot of games against this team, so I just have
(24:05):
a ton of respect for it.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
I love.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
The thing I love the most is the toughness. These
teams are tough. Right now.
Speaker 4 (24:12):
The Beyond Football program can't just give me an overview
of that, because I just love everything that you and
TV has done and brought to this program. It should
I think it will be the model program for the country.
The way we roll in I agree, and I think that.
Speaker 6 (24:27):
You know, when we started that program nine years ago
at San Jose State, I went and talked to some
family friends of mine because.
Speaker 3 (24:34):
I needed I needed help building it. I needed I
needed some money to pay somebody to hire to do it.
And you know what the idea was. And knowing that,
you know, I think.
Speaker 6 (24:47):
Your degree from University Arizona, I went to UCLA, wherever
you graduate from.
Speaker 3 (24:50):
That's super important.
Speaker 6 (24:52):
But the hard part as an athlete is you don't
ever have any applicable, relatable like work experience because you're
your training and you're going to school right like you're
lifting weights or you're practicing and going to school.
Speaker 3 (25:04):
You don't have time for an internship.
Speaker 6 (25:05):
You don't have time for, you know, any kind of
work opportunity that gives you some experience. And you know,
for the majority of college football players, you know, football
ends at college, and so how do we help prepare
them for life after football? And that's where the beyond
football thing comes from. We hired toebrook Blaine and it's
been a home run. And I like the fact that
there's multiple components to it. I like that there's a
(25:27):
campus engagement component. I like that there is a community
service component. And then I love that there's a professional
development component for our players. And she's done a great
job of building relationships with companies here in Tucson, in
the state of Arizona, back in California that will work
on work with an athlete schedule to give them an
internship so they can start to understand where they want
(25:49):
to take, you know, their careers when they're done playing football.
And you know, even if you play for ten years
in the NFL, you're thirty two, thirty three years old,
you're living another sixty seventy years. You need to have
something to do that's going to give you fulfillment and
provide for your family. So to be on football program
is something that's that I'm really really passionate about.
Speaker 3 (26:08):
I do think Toebrook is the best person for it.
Speaker 6 (26:11):
She's incredible, and I do believe that we are impacting
young people's lives every day the more they lean into it,
you know, and I mean, you know, in the last years,
we've added a huge financial literacy component, right, which is
so important because it's not really something that you get
taught in school and so like that that component has
been really impactful for our players here, especially now when
(26:32):
they have you know, Nil and Rev Share and like
most of the players on this level have some sort
of money in their pocket. Well do they understand taxes?
Do they understand investing? Do they understand playing the long
game instead of the short game? And so just trying
to help them, you know, see the big picture of
it all and be on football is a huge part
of what we do here.
Speaker 4 (26:51):
Yeah, that kind of kind of segue is into the
late New Legacy Foundation started by Benji Medlock, the partnerships
of giving back direct investment into the Pacific Islander student athletes.
How proud of you of these kids and what they're
doing and what Benji has done to get this program
off the.
Speaker 6 (27:10):
Ground, No question, Antie, Benji is a really special human
being and over the last you know, year and a half,
I've watched her take care of so many people around
here just with a big heart and her incredible family,
and so I'm excited to see but seeing what she's
going to do with the Lenou Foundation, I think it's
you know, Pacific Islander, you know, focused and you know,
(27:33):
obviously that's going to have a huge benefit for the
players in our program, for the Pacific Island students on
campus here at the u of A or locally has
a chance to be tremendously impactful that way. But I
also think like, as she gets it going and continues
to develop it and build the program, it's going to
expand outside the state of Arizona. And I think that's
something that's going to be really impactful in terms of
(27:53):
helping people have internship opportunities, academic opportunities, scholarship opportunities. I
think it's gonna be really, really impactful for the Pacific
Islander community.
Speaker 3 (28:04):
Great on a light or no, that's our last question here.
Speaker 4 (28:07):
Now, how does the field to finally be settled into
your home seeing your family on a daily basis? And
I see this kid on the field. He's got Brennan
on his back, but he looks like a real athlete.
I mean, he's big, he's athletic. He looked like a
safety receiver. Who's his mother?
Speaker 3 (28:24):
You know his mom? You know, it's good to have
family here. And I love having Scottie on the team.
Speaker 6 (28:29):
You know, we're gonna make him a receiver he played
quarterback in high school and he's pretty good quarterback and
pretty good, really good basketball player. And so he's a
walking on the team. He's doing a great job. But
you know, he's just you know learning, you know, like
he's in that fresh athlete than his daddy. There's no
question he's a better athlete than his old man. Yes,
there's no doubt about that. That does come from his mom,
and his mom would will tell you that every time.
(28:49):
But it's great to have them here. Our house is
still full of boxes a little bit. We're getting settled in,
but we.
Speaker 3 (28:55):
Love the u of A. We love Tucson.
Speaker 6 (28:57):
This is where we want to be for the rest
of our coaching career, and so I think that's something
that you know, hopefully we get started on Saturday night.
Speaker 4 (29:04):
The coach, thank you, appreciate you, buddy, Welcome to the
hunting huddle. I love having you and uh I'm excited
for the season and everything you're going to do with
this team.
Speaker 3 (29:13):
We're excited to appreciate it. Ricky, thank you, brother man.
Speaker 2 (29:17):
We're going to turn you into the journalist after all
the Rivera reporting from Van Ricky Huntley, you may I
have to change my name to her Rivers because that's
how he was named here at Rivers. Yeah, see your cousin,
see you ain't grad here no name. Although we do
have a funny story. Hey guess we have the line
Byron Evans calling in B.
Speaker 4 (29:39):
That's that's one of the hot that that may be
the poundful pound, the hardest hitting line back in Harby's
on the history right there Byron Evan tell him.
Speaker 10 (29:46):
B, Well, well put me on the top then, need.
Speaker 3 (29:49):
I said a poundful pound? You you're lighted than I am.
Speaker 10 (29:53):
No matter about being like the.
Speaker 3 (29:54):
Only way one ninety something when you were playing.
Speaker 1 (30:00):
Rank it.
Speaker 3 (30:01):
That's all right? So I guess are you on the
way down here?
Speaker 1 (30:04):
I am?
Speaker 3 (30:05):
Tell me how was it with these guys? Would you? Guys?
You know I'm having a hard time with them?
Speaker 10 (30:12):
Why why you haven't it? Just got to just roll
with the pun.
Speaker 3 (30:16):
I'll take your advice to roll the roll. They're not
like you. They're rookie radio guys.
Speaker 11 (30:22):
You know you have some background now, yeah, punts en
roll that's it.
Speaker 12 (30:26):
Roll?
Speaker 3 (30:29):
What's up?
Speaker 12 (30:30):
Brother?
Speaker 3 (30:30):
How are you?
Speaker 2 (30:30):
Man?
Speaker 10 (30:31):
Man? You're blessed you already know. Just waiting to call
and talk to my brother.
Speaker 3 (30:36):
Every bit of it. You know, every time, every time
I heard your voice, you know, you make me smile.
Speaker 10 (30:40):
Man, that's what we do. Come on that ain't love man?
Speaker 3 (30:44):
And you know you're the best linebacker every Arizona right,
No I ain't.
Speaker 10 (30:48):
No, no, I'm probably I'm probably the twelfth best one.
Speaker 3 (30:50):
No no, no, I'm in double I'm in double digits.
I'm in the double digits as.
Speaker 10 (30:55):
You're a wrecked matter of fact. Matter of fact, just
put me at the thirteenth fly three, because that's what
I want.
Speaker 3 (31:02):
Nice school. All right, let's get tell me.
Speaker 2 (31:05):
We got about a minute, Byron, We've got about a minute.
Speaker 3 (31:08):
Tell me the keys to the game.
Speaker 10 (31:11):
The key to the game is usual. You know, take
the ball away, don't turn it over, you know, make
sure you make sure you you're able to you know,
make good on on on third downs. You know, keep
the clock moving, keep keep the chains moving. Score when
you have to, and don't give up the big score.
Speaker 3 (31:29):
Okay, okay, we'll see you at the game. Thanks for
calling in, buying your right on point everything you just said.
Speaker 4 (31:36):
All that's one other thing. They got a quarterback who's
got a little injury. Get after his button, Get after him.
Speaker 11 (31:43):
You got to bring the You got to bring the
heat in the heat. There you go.
Speaker 3 (31:48):
It's a bumper sticker.
Speaker 10 (31:50):
Thank you, all right, my brother.

Man.
Speaker 3 (37:07):

Speaker 11 (37:08):
I'm up here with Ricky.
Speaker 3 (37:11):
There you go, first round attitude. It just like roommates again, you.
Speaker 12 (37:15):
Know that's it.
Speaker 8 (37:16):
Roommates.
Speaker 3 (37:17):
Man. There is happy for a brother. There's happy as
you are. Randy.
Speaker 11 (37:23):
Oh man, I'm hey, I couldn't have done it without
those guys.
Speaker 2 (37:26):
Man.
Speaker 11 (37:26):
Hey, you know, like I said, the tails don't wag
the dog man, all I had to do is make
plays behind them.
Speaker 2 (37:32):
That was it.
Speaker 4 (37:32):
So yeah, he was there to pal on every time
a Month made a tackle.
Speaker 11 (37:37):
Exactly right after the sister tackle, Randy.
Speaker 3 (37:40):
I can't wait to hug you, man and let you
know how proud I am. And and and finally getting
your name up there.
Speaker 11 (37:46):
Brother, Hey man, hey man, like I said, and I
mean this me. You know, you guys are my brothers
from another mother. And uh, hey man, I couldn't have
done this without you guys.
Speaker 3 (37:56):
Man, we're done. We love and appreciate you, and thank
you for saying that. I mean, Steve's not your brother,
but in this room.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
I'm going to be a brother by default, because I'm
gonna be a hunting after all these things, all these
games are doing a ran.
Speaker 3 (38:11):
I got a direct question for your boss.
Speaker 4 (38:13):
I mean, I know it's gonna be an emotional moment
and stuff to you know, to see your name up there.
Speaker 3 (38:18):
And how about your family? How are you?
Speaker 2 (38:20):
How?
Speaker 3 (38:20):
How is your family? How your family feel about this
moment today?
Speaker 6 (38:23):
Oh?
Speaker 11 (38:23):
They are you know, they are so proud.
Speaker 6 (38:26):
You know.
Speaker 11 (38:26):
I don't know a lot of people know this, but
we've had a family member in this school in every
decade since the sixties. You know, we had a family
member of some sort graduated from the University of Arizona
in every decade, you know. And and I have a
niece here now, a great niece here now that's going
(38:47):
to graduate as a senior. So you know, our family
is proud. They're very proud of this.
Speaker 4 (38:53):
And they're you know, they're.
Speaker 11 (38:54):
Looking my brothers and sisters. You know, they're looking forward
to it. They're looking forward they're going to be here.
Speaker 2 (38:59):
Was there ever a doubt then that you were not
going to come to Arizona? Or was always Arizona?
Speaker 11 (39:04):
It was always Arizona because my oldest sister, Linda, you know,
she came here in sixty five, sixty six, so it
was you know, I used to come up. You know,
I remember, you know, as a little baby, you know,
a little kid, five six years old, you know, I
remember seeing the campus and my brother Warren came here,
my brother Kenneth came here, my brother Terry came here,
(39:25):
and then I came here, as you know, as the
youngest of the family. So out of my six siblings,
five of us graduated from this university.
Speaker 2 (39:33):
Can you remember the first time you saw him play here.
He was a true freshman And what did you think.
I mean, he's a talent. I mean the guy he
just could make plays. You know, he was always reliable, responsible.
Ranny always shows up. You know, it's like today on
this call. You know, we apologize to the people.
Speaker 4 (39:52):
Earlier he had Chuck Sisi coming on, but he had
some duties with the game tonight and we couldn't get
him on. We're gonna get him on in the future.
But you call Randy, Randy steps up, you know, and
especially for you, by by all means, I mean I
knew he was a star when I first saw him.
And uh, you know, just the body structure. You know
that he was a shutdown corner man. You should see
(40:14):
him in. It's such an athletic player. I mean, you
know I think I mean to me again, Randy is
the best defensive back they ever played here at the university.
Speaker 2 (40:24):
They told me back in the day, Randy, that you
only had one mistake four years.
Speaker 3 (40:32):
His way.
Speaker 4 (40:33):
I mean he broke up everything or either he intercepted it.
Some most teams in throw at Randy Robins. He was
a quiet killer, that's right.
Speaker 11 (40:44):
Yeah, I mean it's you know, I you know, I
appreciate Rick and Lamont and you know for their you
know what they're saying, and you know, I just wanted
to do the best, and I wanted to you know,
go out there and if I had to shut a
guy down, shut him down, and if there was a
play coming aund my way, trying to make the play,
to do what's best for the team, you know, because
(41:06):
that's what it's about, you know, being a team player.
Speaker 3 (41:09):
And if you know, if my job was to do that,
that's what I what I was going to do.
Speaker 2 (41:13):
At any point in your career, well even after the career,
did you see your your name on those on those lights?
Speaker 3 (41:20):
Did you see yourself on that.
Speaker 12 (41:23):
You know?
Speaker 11 (41:23):
I mean when I was in the when I got
inducted in the uh you know, to the you know,
our Hall of Fame, our sports Hall of Fame. You know,
I was playing the same time Ricky was. We were
playing when we both got inducted into our schools Hall
of Fame. But you know, down the road, I mean,
you know.
Speaker 10 (41:40):
I thought about it.
Speaker 11 (41:41):
Because you know, being in the our Schools Hall of
Fame is awesome. But being in this, you know, this
Ring of Honor, that's a special group of guys in
my opinion. You know, it's really it's really special for me.
And that's what I'm cherishing about this moment when it's
gonna when it comes up.
Speaker 2 (42:00):
You know what I like about you guys. You guys
are loyal to the school. You guys are here to
watch the games. He's coming down right to hang out
with you guys and watch the game.
Speaker 3 (42:07):
How cool is that? And I look forward to it.
Speaker 4 (42:10):
I mean even when I wasn't living here, I would
come here just to hang out with my guys, tailgate
with Lamont, Randy Byron, they all come out and I
love it. But you know, the loyalty to your school
goes a long way, even to the coaches that have
coached us. And I was thinking about this the other
me and Coach Brennan were talking about this. It's like
we've had a lot of great coaches here that don't
get any credit. We need to have a Ring of
(42:33):
honor for our coaches. They need to be honored as well,
you know. I mean, Dick Toomey is the all time winning.
This coach and is on a football history.
Speaker 3 (42:40):
We need to put his name up there in the
ring of honor, you know, and we need to get
Larry Smith name.
Speaker 4 (42:45):
And but they're guys that coach that we need to
help because they helped us. And it's we and it's we,
I mean we as the former players, we as the
ones that was out there playing the game, and.
Speaker 3 (42:56):
We need to push to push that. You know, we
got deys.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
We were on the phone right now. Hey, Granny, we
gotta go. We'll see you tonight. Joy enjoy your moment.
Speaker 3 (43:08):
They don't come often.
Speaker 11 (43:10):
Hey, I appreciate its quarter a bare down.
Speaker 3 (43:17):
Good to hear from Reddie Robinson.
Speaker 2 (43:18):
We didn't get into his other stuff that we did
two weeks ago, thankfully, but that's for another day. No,
great to have him on the show. Let's get back
to the game because we have about ten minutes to
talk about it. Let me ask you guys, because you
guys play defense. Uh, the thea the guys back there,
the Stokes and the Genesis Smiths, they have a name,
right and I think they have a future beyond this.
Speaker 3 (43:40):
Do what do they need to do?
Speaker 2 (43:41):
Because I think in my mind, not having played this
that you just they just need to play. The other
things will fix themselves or you know what I'm saying,
take care of themselves.
Speaker 4 (43:49):
Yeah, I think the first thing when you take a
guy like Stoops, I mean he has proven that he
has this skill set and maybe uh get to the
next level.
Speaker 3 (43:57):
Get healthy, you know. And I think he's on track
to be healthy.
Speaker 4 (44:01):
They've done a great job of not rushing him too
soon to make sure he's healthy and he's ready to go,
and there's no setbacks because if he goes out and
he plays the way he's capable of playing, he will
be an NFL player in my opinion. Genesis, he's young,
you know, he's going into his second year. He's already
preseason honors. He's gonna be a great player. He's gonna
(44:24):
be another Brandy Robins type player. Well, I think that
they the one to really run the defense. I mean,
they're going to control a lot of defense throughout the year.
So I think their leadership really really got to show
each game, you know, and and the pause what it
takes to run a good quality defense. It has to
(44:44):
start from the back end, you know. And I think
the defense that coach Gonzalez is running. Everything is predicated
on that defense. You've got five defensive guys out on
the field. I mean, those guys got to be some dogs.
I mean they have to be some dogs. And they
got a demand on the guys up front. I mean
they got to get the offensive defensive lineman, you know,
(45:04):
to push, you know, to create things to bounce out
so they can come up and clean up in nataleie.
So you know, those they got to be the dogs
out there this afternoon and through the whole you said
them out full there because it comes back to the players.
Coaches coach, players play, and it comes down to the
players making football players. But you go back to the
great teams. They all were good at running to the
(45:27):
football as a swarm. They ran to the football. When
we played, we ran to the football. You have to
run to the football on defense, you have to execute
on offense, and you have to win third down and
create turnal wars. I mean I was a linebacker. I
led the team in interception because I ran to the ball.
They were intercepted fumbles. They weren't like I intercepted the ball.
(45:49):
You know, I hit the guy and the ball popped out.
I hit the guy in the ball. Pop hit the guy.
Speaker 3 (45:53):
Thank you. On one occasion, I think, is that guy
you have to be aggressive?
Speaker 4 (45:58):
Or I was about to say that, because I mean
he and teach that aggressiveness throughout practice and stuff. And
running to the ball is you know, from from the
moment they get in the huddle, that's the emphasis. Run
to the football, Run to the football. And we would
always say meet me at the ball, run to the football.
Something good is always going to happen. We got loving
hamlets at one the ball, okay, and we need to
(46:20):
see more of that and more of that to take place,
particularly for this type of a defense and turnovers. Now,
I tell you why he's going to be like that
because they got a defensive coordinator Dennis Dermott, and that's
his philosophy, that's what he believes in.
Speaker 3 (46:32):
He coached with the Baltimore Ravens for years.
Speaker 4 (46:33):
They were the best at pursuit and running to the
football and creating turnovers and going down the sideline with
five guys leading the block after an interception.
Speaker 3 (46:42):
So you got to run.
Speaker 2 (46:43):
Well, you talk about that on the defensive end, I
think offensively you have to be aggressive too, whether you're
running the ball or passing the ball. I think you
have the perfect quarterback to do that because he's very skilled,
very smart.
Speaker 4 (46:54):
Well, I don't think we have to be aggressive with
the player calling. I think we have to be aggressive
physically playing the games, particularly up front. I think our
offensive line is young. They got to get together, They
got to protect Nor. They give Nor that opportunity to
sit back, you know, evaluate what's coming in front of
him and be smart with the football. We need to
(47:17):
see if we can get the twenty twenty three Nor back,
you know, and forget about the twenty twenty four North.
I think the offense that that we will be putting
out on the field will have the twenty twenty three
Nor behind the center. And I think the offensive lineman
because of this, you know, thegetherness that has been created,
(47:38):
they their number one goal is to protect North.
Speaker 2 (47:41):
So when you make sure a now is not hurt Rickie.
So when you go to practice, do you you look
at the defense? Obviously, but do you see the offense
too and how they're doing?
Speaker 3 (47:49):
Oh?
Speaker 4 (47:49):
Absolutely, I see the discipline and not jumping all sides,
you know, you know, not giving plays back that you made.
Those kind of things where allowed you to control the
line in a scrimmage, that allow you to execute flawlessly.
That's going to allow you to control the ball. And
so I remember watching just you know, you're throwing balls
(48:12):
to the receivers. Well, back in the day, it was
just just throw a ball to tm mac. It was
one ball at a time and one quarterbacks throwing. Now
there's five balls out. There's five guys that think that
they're the guy.
Speaker 3 (48:21):
Right. You know, there's four guys that run ten two.
Speaker 4 (48:24):
Hundred meters, So you got speed, you got quickness, get
them the ball. And and so there's a lot of
guys that want to show their wars. And you know,
you got a lot of proud football players out on
that team. But they have fun, They love each other,
and they rally.
Speaker 3 (48:39):
Behind each other. I think it's gonna be a fun year.
I really do. And not just because you're an alum,
because you see that now I only speak the truth.
Speaker 2 (48:49):
How is it okay? So we're gonna gobut three four minutes?
Are you gonna see all your guys Byron Randy more right?
How is it kind of being there with these guys
at the place you kind of grew up? We came, man,
that should say when I don't get that, Well, you're
you're nineteen years old.
Speaker 3 (49:05):
This is this is home to you guys.
Speaker 2 (49:07):
I mean, and you're gonna be a group of X
guys kind of walking into the stadium hanging out together.
Speaker 3 (49:11):
How does that? How does that feel? I'm sure all
you guys talk about football like like we.
Speaker 4 (49:15):
Said earlier, know, you know, you when you we ain't
have that opportunity to be around each other and and
really you know, and and and love up on each other. Yeah,
that mean that's the main thing. You know, we love
up on each other. And there is the point of
time my life, in our life. We you know, we
respect each other whole heartily. And you know, being around
Randy is you know, particularly to this particular day is
(49:38):
very warming for me because I get to see Randy
name up up in the stadium and it should have
been done years ago and finally is there and everyone
else who's gonna be here, and I'm sure there gonna
be other former players there.
Speaker 3 (49:50):
They're all going to feel the same way.
Speaker 4 (49:52):
So probably it could be more about Randy than anyone
else because it's very deserving of it. Well, you know,
the thing is you talk to any any formal player
that have played and played on a great team, they'll
always talk about the camaraderie and you miss it.
Speaker 3 (50:07):
We get to revisit it every week. We get to
come together. I mean we have spring ball.
Speaker 4 (50:11):
Two hundred guys show up, We have a huddle call
with Brandon Sanders and all the alums show up and
we all talk about football. It is a great feeling.
When you get old, you have very few friends. Steve,
you got two friends.
Speaker 2 (50:22):
We got a lot of friends, you know, And so
we're just playing football. Steve, we played football together. We
here was a nerd we are talking about. Get my clippings.
Go online and check me out. Google me, man, google
me google a blow up, robo verbarrow come up. Yes,
I'm okay with that. Let's calls. We've got got a
(50:44):
couple of minutes. What's going to happen tonight. Well, I
think the main thing that gonna happen the outcome of
the game. And I can see that we're going to
control the actual outcome the game. I can see us
winning the game twenty eight to seventeen. I think it's
gonna be a very control game.
Speaker 4 (51:02):
I think it's important as far as offensively, we get
out there and set the temple by sending it to temple,
I mean getting the ball to the to the running
backs quick and fast either you know, passing the ball
the passes here and there to allow Nora to.
Speaker 3 (51:17):
Get his feet underneath him.
Speaker 4 (51:18):
And then at that point in time, matchdown matched up
and down the field, score some points. You know, let
the defense get out there, do that thing, create some turnovers,
and let the defense sit on the sideline.
Speaker 3 (51:30):
Seventeen.
Speaker 4 (51:31):
I said, fine, Well, you know you got a lot
of people out there predicting what the score is gonna be, right,
and you know got nst caters saying thirty one seventeen,
thirty eight, seventeen forty two seven.
Speaker 3 (51:42):
Coach, We're gonna get after people.
Speaker 4 (51:44):
We're gonna play football, We're gonna be sound okay, We're
gonna control the ball, we're gonna create turnovers, and it's
gonna be like thirty five to six. He's the optimist
of the family. That's concerns optimist in the room. You know,
depending on if the starting quarterback for why he stays
out there.
Speaker 2 (52:04):
Yeah, that could be a very good good point. Good
point if they get to him like you say, let's
go get them and see what happened to him.
Speaker 4 (52:10):
Quick and early, get him out the game. He's limping
around in that warm up. Man, heat it up, Come
after him. Man, what is what did say?
Speaker 3 (52:16):
Heat in the heat? What is bring the heat?
Speaker 2 (52:18):
Bring the heat in the heat. Great for a show, guys, Thanks,
we gotta go appreciate it. We'll see you guys next week.
Before the Weavers take game, it's over. It's over, just
like that fast offense, fast defense. Let's go all right, brother, guys,
