Speaker 1 (00:02):
Legendary takes, Wildcat greats Ricky Hunley and Lamont Hunley with
Steve Rivera all things Arizona football. This is the Hunley Huddle.
Power by Nova Home Loans. Welcome everybody to the Hunley Huddle.
I'm here with Lamont and Ricky Hunley. I'm your host,
Steve Rivera. Welcome back, guys. Welcome Steve. I'm welcome.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
High exciting.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
How do they let you through the door? God, you
see you say? How they let you use two of
us over here?

Speaker 1 (00:28):
Tell me both of you. Well, you're the good guy.
Ricky's been a pain, but he's a good pain. Greek three.
How big is this game?

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Guys? Big?

Speaker 3 (00:38):
Tell me how big? Rick Going to Week three? You're
gonna play a conference but not a conference opponent. Yes,
it's not a conference game because of the schedule short
before and uh, you know it's a great momentum swing
before you go into your break. To be sitting here
at three and zero going into your break getting ready
for another nationally ranked team.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
This is huge.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
So you know it's all about But coach Brentnan says, man,
you gotta it's a red line. You know you got
to be one hundred four hundred. You got to do
your job, you got to be efficient, you can't have penalties.
It's going to be awesome. Awesome that messire month, Well,
I mean it is. It's huge in the fact is
that we're finally gonna play an opponent that should be

(01:25):
at out of level, you know, the last few games
and then you know, we played Weaver State, we played Washington,
let me say Weave State in Hawaii. But right now
we're playing somebody, and we're playing an opponent that has
a good offense, that has a good defense. So it's
going to give our defense as well as an offense,
an opportunity to really show what we're all about. And
we're playing at home six o'clock on a Friday afternoon.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yeah, so, I mean I expect to see about fifty
thousand people there.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
About two months ago, three months ago. I think many
people have this one as a loss, just given they
were probably the front runners to win the league. Right
they're not anymore. You guys have shown pretty pretty strong stuff.
Uh the spread is very close, obviously one one one
of one and a half points. I think of this.
Uh So, now I think the Tits have turned people

(02:12):
believe in Arizona and people don't believe in in the
what in the Kansas State Wildcats?

Speaker 3 (02:17):
But well you got this the Wildcats from Manhattan didn't.
Didn't haven't shown that proof. I mean, I think the
opponents that we just played, Weaver State versus the Hawaii
if you look at our stats there, I mean we
we could have actually been on that football field and
played anybody and and and and showcased ourselves.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Against Hawaii, we got.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
What uh uh two hundreds and and ninety one yards
total offense. Against the Weaver State we had over three
hundred some yards total offense. So I really think that
this is an opportunity again, like Ricky said earlier, to
do the things that we have done these last few games,
step up, redline ourselves, do everything's they expected to begun

(03:01):
and you know, Kansas State, it should be a be
a win for us, no doubt, our big, our our
good players got to show up, and uh we expect
Noah no less than you know what he did last week.
I mean he had an outstanding game, three hundred and
fifty three yards. You know, yeah, we had a forty
eighty three win. But those are trap games and when
you playing trap games, man, you got to show up

(03:23):
and be ready to go, and our guys did just that,
and so defensive played well. You know, we're holding opponents
to almost understood six six points per game. That's impressive,
you know. I mean, we're leading the nation probably in turnovers.
That's impressive. So, I mean, if you can continue on
that trajectory, you know, I expect us to win this game.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Yeah, okay, you have interviews with Saliva and Daniel, who's
the language, so a lot of defensive talk, right, yes,
coming in d line. Yeah, okay, so we'll see what
happens with that. You guys are pretty excited about this one.
I know that Lamont is given his excitement for this.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
I mean, I'm very excited, and I'm exciting in a
lot of ways. I'm excited that, you know, they're bringing
back the old tradition helmets, they bring it back, the
block a, you know, they bring it back a lot
of things that was around our era and time.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
You know, So I'm very.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Excited to see that happen, and hopefully those kids can
get out there and play some old school defense and
continue what they're doing defensively.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
You know, we were talking earlier.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
I'm very excited the fact that they are bringing these
old school helmets back because the day is coach Smith's birthday,
Larry Smith birthday, and traditionally he was the guy who
started the Block eight or brought the Block am back
in the early eighties, you know, so it's great to
see that and his birthday. He has a grandson that's
going to be playing out on the field this afternoon,

(04:49):
so hopefully he gets some snaps behind him, so you know,
bring the game on, you know, bring the game on,
old school in front of us. So it's an exciting
night right now, Friday night. We'll see what happens. You
sent me matchups.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
What are the key matchups here in this first and
how big is the first quarter?

Speaker 2 (05:06):
The first quarter is gonna be huge.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
I mean, the number one thing we got to do
is we got to contain Avery Johnson. I mean, he's
a legitimate dual threat quarterback that can run, he can
throw the ball down the football field. But for pressure
in his face, he's just an average guy. We get
after him, we put the pressure on him. You know,
it could be a long night for him. We've done that,
you know, time and time again in the last two games,

(05:27):
but again lesser opponents.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
But still guys get excited about playing defense.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
Guys get excited about when coach Gonzales he likes to
dial up the pressures, and you know, good things can happen.
You know, it comes down to the fundamentals of guys
doing their job. Okay, let's not beat ourselves by jumping
off sides, giving up a big play with penalties. Do
your job, be efficient, run and tackle. The most important

(05:52):
thing is tackle. I mean, if you talk about throwback man,
the throwback in the old days, it was swarm to
the football. It was run to the football, meet me
at the football. And if they continue to do that
at the pace that they've been doing it, this is
gonna be one of the best defense this school has
ever seen because they're doing a good job of running
to the football and making big plays. Well, you know,

(06:13):
I guess the new word is population, bringing a population
to the football. You know, we as always say run
to the wall, run to the ball, and Brennan and
said at a few times, let's have a big population
at the football. And rightfully so, we're going to have
to have that against Avery with the dual threat type
of a quarterback that we're facing Kay and I'm seeing

(06:34):
my guy Riley Wilson.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
They've been trickling him in there a little bit.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
He's the linebacker they transferred in from Montanatana State.

Speaker 2 (06:43):
Man.

Speaker 3 (06:43):
He's a good one and he has been doing some
amazing things out there, just with a few reps that
he's getting, So hopefully his time will increase and you know,
we'll have even better tackle.

Speaker 1 (06:54):
When you were on the sidelines, Ricky, did you coach Gooder?
Did I coach Gooder? Yeah, they're the transfer he left here. Yes,
he was on our So what are what are you guys?

Speaker 3 (07:05):
What Arizona expect him to see from him? Well, gunners
are smart football player. He's going to be in position.
He's going to be in position to make plays, make
big hits, you know. But it's like any player, man,
you know, if you get a chance to put hats
on smaller guys, you do it and get them on
their heels. So we got to be effective running the
football today, and I think that's gonna really be the

(07:26):
biggest key.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
To the game, how well we run the football and
control it. I mean, I think we got to control
the clock.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
Also, Ricky very much controlling on the offense side of
the ball, keep the ball balanced, keep it, you know,
offense running pace to a passing place. And if we
can do that, you know, keep the ball away from
Kansas State from Avery. You know, we got a much
much better shot of the outcome being on our side
versus being on the other.

Speaker 2 (07:51):
Side of what we're talking.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
I like what Beggy's been doing with Noah. You're not
only seeing him drop back in the pocket, you know,
seeing just a quick passes. You're seeing them roll the
pocket out to the wide field. He gets the ball
out to the receivers quick. You know, they're not holding
onto the ball and taking hits and taking sacks on
the quarterback like we saw last year.

Speaker 2 (08:11):
The ball is out.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
We got great receivers that are making great plays getting
it down the field. Wattley he had some great catches
last week. I mean he led all receivers and catches
one and eighty five yards. So and then you got
some guys that's gonna be healthy. You know, Hunter's going
to be back out there, Spivey's going to be back
out there.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Let's go, and it's good to see that.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
I mean, the ball is being dispersed by quite a
few different receivers also, which you know we didn't do
last year. And I think that's allowing Noah to really
be more efficient with the football and do better, better
things with the ball because he's not looking for one player.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
He got multiple weapons that he can get the ball to.

Speaker 3 (08:50):
And we haven't seen him use his legs yet, really,
we really not haven't seen him use this well. But
you know what, using your legs is not a bad thing,
you know so because that meaning that you know, you're
not throwing the ball, putting it in the air and
threatening thurn yourself with down, just tak what they give you.
I mean, if they're gonna running pay man coverage with
everybody with the back turning quarterback, go get your ten
fifteen yeard.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
That's what Avery Johnson did us last right, And.

Speaker 3 (09:12):
That's what I'm saying, And you're speaking of Avery Johnson,
what he did to us last year.

Speaker 2 (09:16):
We cannot allow that to happen.

Speaker 3 (09:18):
We can not allow Avery to get outside, you know,
get around that corner. What should be like a five
yard run turn into a sixty yard right. I can
give you a guarantee right now that coach Gonzales got
a playing game plan for Faverite Johnson.

Speaker 2 (09:30):
Coach Ellaville's got a game plan for AVERYE. Johnson.

Speaker 3 (09:32):
They watched that take time and time again. That is
not gonna happen. Yeah, yeah, we'll see what happens.

Speaker 1 (09:37):
And then Arizona has its backs who played fantastically well
that first game. Right is the back from the first
game back was kind of No, he's hurt. I believe
he didn't play last week. Yeah, I don't think he's
playing this week. Okay, so somebody I heard something he
was not. Someone's gonna step up right, Well, well.

Speaker 3 (09:56):
He got he got some good backs back there, so
he got You got some choices, you know. And and
and those those gentlemen, they don't they show that they
can get on.

Speaker 2 (10:05):
The gutty kid.

Speaker 3 (10:06):
I'll tell you what, if he's even close to being
healthy and they put him out there, he's gonna perform
like he is healthy. And because we need him, We
need those kind of players on third and fourth down,
because third and fourth down is going to be the
key in this game. Win third down on offense, win
third down on defense, and don't turn the ball over.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
And we got ourselves a football game.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
You guys talked about, well, you did a ricky about
this game before the break. Here, keep everybody healthy. You
have the break, you come back in two weeks.

Speaker 4 (10:37):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
The importance of that as you have some time off
just to think. How big is that.

Speaker 3 (10:42):
It's huge when anytime you can get healthy, you get
bodies healthy. Guys can rejuvenate and get fresh, and they
just have a couple of days off just to be
a normal student and feel good about yourself. You know
what another win there was. I mean it's been a
long time, so we've been sitting here three and zero.

Speaker 5 (10:59):
Mm.

Speaker 3 (11:01):
Well, I mean anytime you can you can get a break.
I mean just walking away from the game of football,
you know, relaxing your mind and think about other things
and doing other things.

Speaker 2 (11:09):
That it's good for everybody.

Speaker 3 (11:12):
Only if we win the game, though, you got to
wake a whole It was always in the NFL. If
you won on Sunday, you had off Monday and Tuesday.
So when when get that extra day?

Speaker 2 (11:25):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (11:25):
So in this case you got a whole week soles
when Yeah, but it would be one last day to
your practice that you can.

Speaker 1 (11:32):
Let me add to this, we're gonna have Tom Tunercliffe
at the three forty mark.

Speaker 2 (11:36):
Great to have Tom.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
He's gonna be in studio, so we'll do some reminiscing
with you, guys. I think he's a fantastic court or
was a fantastic quarterback human being, one of our great sponsors.
So we'll see what he says at the three forty hour.
Anything else, guys, as we get ready to take a
break here in about three four minutes.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
I think, you know, just like we're chomping at the bit,
those kids are chomping at the bit, and they sitting
in their room and they're excited.

Speaker 2 (12:01):
They can't wait to get going, and the fans.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
And people gonna show up and show out.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
It's gonna be a fun game exactly, you know. And
like I said, it's a six o'clock game.

Speaker 3 (12:10):
What else do you have to do here in Tucson
at this point in time, six o'clock, you know, get
out there and make it the family a fail. Get
some kids, get your kids out there, you know, you know,
show up so these so our Wildcats can you know, really.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
Perform for you out on this football field. So I'm excited.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
I can't wait to see kick off and and see
our Wildcats be on the better side of this win.
Let's leave as few seats as possible for the visiting
team fans, because I'm telling you those people from Kansas
vacation for them to come out here to Tucson. You know,
the last time I saw Kansas State here in Tucson
was at a copper Boat and it was purple everywhere.

(12:47):
Two thousand, two thousands. Hey, it was purple everywhere everywhere.
So hey, let them come for that disappointment. They can
let them watch from the parking lot. Well, let me
tell you something.

Speaker 1 (12:58):
We had the beat writerly yesterday, the covers A team,
and the people in Kansas State are not too happy
with this team. They haven't shown up at all. They
beat nor Couta in the last minute. Were they were
a favorite to win every game. Yes, that's that's my point.

(13:19):
So I think this is the chance you go three
and oh looking good, We'll see we see.

Speaker 2 (13:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (13:25):
Well, I mean it's all in our favor. I think
everything falls in line for us. We got the home
fill advantage. You know, we're playing again on a Friday night.
You know we have a big crowd. I mean, the
the energy that they've been talking about in regards to
the throw back, you know, the blockade, I mean, I'm
just excited about all of that motion and that movement,

(13:45):
you know, those great times during our time of our life, Ricky. So,
I mean, I'm just looking forward to, you know, some
some crazy football and some running to the ball and
and and Brenda's way. Let's keep on populating, Okay, build

This is Eye on the Ball with Steve Rivera on
Fox Sports fourteen fifty. Welcome back to This is not
Iron the Ball, This is the Honey Huddle with Ricky
and Lamont. Ricky was again being playing journalists this week,
as you will be all the time. You talked to
some great coaches, Joe Salavea said, Diggy and Josh Brinle.

(18:44):
So first off, we're gonna get some Joe Salovea. He's
one of those wisdom soothsayers, isn't he. Yeah he speaks softly,
but Carri, yes, you don't want to mess with him.

Speaker 2 (18:54):
Yeah, there we go.

Speaker 3 (18:56):
When it comes to this next point of Kansas State,
I mean, what can you get give me an insight
perspective as far as what we're gonna be facing.

Speaker 13 (19:03):
I think you're now getting into the teeth of the
starting to get into the teeth of the conference. This
conference is all about physicality. And in case they has
a physical front. Uh, they've got some some good athletes.
But the quarterback uh is an explosive kid. We're very cerebral.
It's got good balance and vision. Uh. We got to
make sure that we were squeeze in the pocket and

(19:26):
restrict any opportunities for this young man to be scampering
all over the place. But they they they they played
to their strength, and their strength is the office of line.
You know. They got uh some some split zone and
caps gap schemes.

Speaker 5 (19:40):
Uh.

Speaker 13 (19:40):
You got to fit those with velocity and physicality. This
ain't one of those things where you gotta you, you
gotta you gotta be all in as far as upfront wise.
For us to have a chance, we got to displace
that line of serums. We got set hard edges and
guys need to fit where need to be. And so
we do that and play play lights out one hundred

(20:01):
miles an hour. You know, I'm excited to see our
guys uh get another opportunity to make a case. You know,
I think our guys are tired of being written off.
And they they're working with a chip on the shoulder,
and I think all those things are great. It goes
back to execution right, doing their job and then doing
doing it better than the opponent. And I think those

(20:23):
are the things that matters, because we can have the
best speeches of the raw Rock talks. If we don't
continue to work on the grass and perfecting those drills
and and and bringing the drills to the field work,
it really doesn't really matter because then you're you're fighting
a losing fight before our guys and in the last
few weeks just a it's just a blessing to to

(20:44):
see those guys apply the things that we've been working on.

Speaker 3 (20:48):
Is there anything we're gonna have to do special to
contain Avery Johnson got.

Speaker 13 (20:53):
To hit them always from me, believe that you know,
good athletes are gonna make their plays. But you know,
think we with us. It's if we go in there
with always us mentally, we'll be we'll we'll we'll be good.
But if if it's one of those things where you
try to do it on your own and play within
the confines of the defense, yeah, the World War will

(21:16):
have issues. But I think the by end that we've
been stressing with with with our staff and obviously with
coach Brandon is is redlind Right effort one one hundreds
of hours, one hundred, one hundred percent of the time.
Prove it, you know, by executing doing your job. And
if something do come up, because you always find adversity
right and you realize what kind of guys you are,

(21:37):
then you've got to own it, fix it, and move forward.
But I think those those other things we're not trying
to We're not going to try to trick people. We're
want to line up and we're want to go bare
knuckles and we're gonna fight. And I think that's the
spirit that we count to try to work to build
here as a culture because you know, there's a lot
of athletes, a lot of good UH personnel players within
the conference. Are we're we're just singing to our tune

(22:00):
or what works for us is the front guy's gotta
gotta be there physically, physically and and and and really
just you know, enjoy the opportunity UH to out work
and our last people. And that's what we've been training
to and excited for this opportunity for the Wildcats, and.

Speaker 2 (22:17):
They look like they having fun doing it. Thank you, Joe.
I appreciate your brother man, all right, you're a legend. Man,
Your a legend, and so are you. So we're excited.
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (22:28):
So after that, love fast right there, Ricky. Uh, you
guys had Roganman giving you pep talks and get inspiring you.
Is he like that? And were you a little like
that because you had him as a coach?

Speaker 2 (22:39):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (22:40):
I think I made a little bit of Rogae in me.
Also had a little bit of Chuck a model in me.
I had a little bit.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
Of Moanky and me and you become a product of
your coaches, right of course. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
And what about Joe.

Speaker 3 (22:52):
Absolutely he's got a lot of dick to me and
him too, but you do it at a different tone
and differently. I mean, Joe is one of the best man. Yeah,
he gets the best most of it.

Speaker 9 (23:02):
Got.

Speaker 1 (23:02):
I was just gonna say, you probably run through a
wall for him, or at least try to.

Speaker 2 (23:06):
Yeah, okayo, Joe, show a lot of love to those kids,
you know.

Speaker 3 (23:09):
Yeah, you know it's to be such a big man,
you know, and don't mind putting his arms around these
kids and and letting them know how much.

Speaker 2 (23:18):
You love and care about.

Speaker 1 (23:19):
Yeah, and guess what's important they pay attention to that.
They really love that, right.

Speaker 3 (23:23):
It really does a great job of helping him appreciate
what kind of opportunity that they have playing this game
of football.

Speaker 1 (23:30):
Yeah, okay, let's go to Seth Diggy.

Speaker 2 (23:32):
Now, we got a big opponent this week, Kansas State. God,
what is it going to take to be the good
Kansasite team?

Speaker 3 (23:39):
I mean, they had their struggles here, but we know
Kansas s gonna come here and give us the best shot.

Speaker 4 (23:45):
There's no doubt to me. I don't even look at
their record and say, like, oh, to one and two team.
If you look at the tape, they're very talented.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
You know.

Speaker 4 (23:54):
Obviously I haven't watched the offense as much, but defensively
they're a little bit banged up. But the guys that
they do have or are good players. There's a reason
why they were picked to finish at the top of
the Big twelve. It's because they have really good players.
So we're gonna have to come and show up and
match that physicality. I think that's what I think about
all the time, is Kansas State being a very physical,

(24:16):
dominating team that runs the football extremely well, and they're
always good on defense. I don't think anything has changed.
I think they they came up short in two games
that are that are tough opponents I would state being
one of the better teams in the Big twelve.

Speaker 2 (24:30):
And then obviously Army.

Speaker 4 (24:31):
Anytime you play with me, it's tough to play Army, right,
And so you know, to look at the record and
say like, oh, they're not the same Kansas State they
they've always been, I don't think.

Speaker 2 (24:38):
I don't think that's true.

Speaker 4 (24:39):
I think if you turn on the tape, you're like, Okay,
this this team still has a chance to compete for
the title build and and so for us to win
this game, we're gonna have to do a great job
of protecting the football. I think that's always the first key.
So the victory is to make sure we protect the football.
The second one is like, we have to have eleven
guys on the field doing their job. I think in

(25:00):
a magnitude game like this, especially on a Friday night
when that's probably gonna be a huge crowd on national
TV and everybody in the world is watching, I think
guys tend to like want to do more than you
know their coach to do. They want to be Superman.
I got to make the play here. I got to
do a little bit extrale. At the end of the day,
you just got to make a routine play. You the
routine play is doing your job and trust in your preparation.

(25:21):
And then lastly, I think we talk about this all
the time in this building, is we got to stay
together and respond through adversity, whether it be you know,
we're up a couple of touchdowns, can we can we
can we respond and still finish the right way? Or
if we're down a few touchdowns, can we respond and
so find a way to win. So that's been the
kind of the the the driving point to this, this, uh,

(25:44):
this program, this this camp, and through the first couple
of games, is how we how we respond through adversity,
whether it be good or bad. And uh, I'm excited
to see what our guys do when they get challenged.

Speaker 2 (25:55):
Well, let's just keep you rolling, no doubt, it's been great, brother,
appreciate it, man.

Speaker 1 (25:59):
I so guys, wouldn't he had media day here in
late August or late July, I think it was. I
asked him if he felt like he had to be
a savior of this team offensively, and he was all, shocktion,
I'm just gonna do what I do. But on the
defensive side, when you guys were players, did you pay
attention to guys like him the offensive coordinators because he's

(26:21):
that guy that is giving Arizona's offense a lot of hope.
Does that make sense?

Speaker 2 (26:26):
Yeah, because you know he brings a lot of energy.

Speaker 3 (26:29):
Yeah, he brings a system that fits perfectly with the
quarterback that we has. You know, his focus has been
running the football and so that's a priority for him
to be good at running the football, and those all
the things we needed to be a better team. You know,
like I said, Brent did a great job of hiring
Seth Daggi and now Danny Gonzalez. It's like the perfect

(26:53):
complimentary football, right. You're bringing pressure to force turnovers, You're
bringing guys who can move the ball. You keep giving
them opportunities to move the ball in the score and
so far the plan has been working great.

Speaker 2 (27:05):
So let's just keep it going.

Speaker 3 (27:08):
When you think it's important that in regards to you know,
you you bringing someone on the opposite side of the
field that you feel that you could believe in.

Speaker 2 (27:17):
The trust factor is there.

Speaker 3 (27:19):
And you believe that he's going to make a difference
for the whole offensive scheme. So it makes my job
up much much easier as far as the defender, because
I know the offense gonna do with their they're capable
of doing what they need to do. So defensively, you know,
we just do our thing. And I remember one game
that we was playing back in the early eighties. I mean,
I got so fed up with the offense. That's like

(27:40):
I went to go Smith, say just keep the defense
on the field because offense kept fumbling the ball. You know,
So you can get frustrated at time as far as
if your teammates are not doing what they're supposed to do.

Speaker 2 (27:51):
Was Tom the quarterback then? No? No, no Tom. That
was my senior year. That was after Jenkins. Tom was
not a court Do.

Speaker 1 (27:56):
You remember the offensive coordinators you had here?

Speaker 2 (27:58):
Oh? Yeah, who were they we had?

Speaker 3 (28:01):
Anyway, we had first Steve, Yes, we had defensive coordinator.
He's offense.

Speaker 2 (28:10):
So we only have one.

Speaker 1 (28:11):
No.

Speaker 3 (28:12):
Before Squeaky left, Steve AxMan left and he brought in
the guy from Utah, Oh Bob Sto.

Speaker 1 (28:20):
Two big dames. You know, ax was a pretty big
offensive name.

Speaker 3 (28:25):
So no, and he and he made a lot out
of what he had.

Speaker 1 (28:28):
Right. The guy that we got coming in here later on,
that's what his guy, and we'll talk to him about
that was this guy. And lastly we're going to get
ahold of Josh Springle position and what.

Speaker 14 (28:39):
You do Josh Bringuel Linebickers coach, University of Arizona.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
Josh Okay. I keep seeing these guys. Man.

Speaker 3 (28:47):
Last week they had pretty good production. Roley Wilson and
Max Hars talked to me about these two.

Speaker 14 (28:52):
Yeah, so they're a fun group, you know, both of
them coming in here kind of like be this our
first season together? Uh here and and they're both awesome
guys on and off the field. They play hard, they
train hard, they practice hard, they attack every meeting and
that's what you see on the grass is that same
kind of mentality of how they attack the ball.

Speaker 2 (29:11):
That's how they attack everything.

Speaker 14 (29:12):
Their process, how they recover, how they study all this stuff.
So they've been fun and it's no surprise that when
guys put in the work shoot the pays off and
they have some production. But all the guys in the room,
not just those two, but Tay Chase Jerboria, all the
guys that you know, that's what I've been excited about
that you've seen multiple guys making plays from the room
in multiple different ways as a collective group. You've seen
they have a pretty good rotation of guys in there. Yeah,

(29:34):
from a depth standpoint at linebacker or something weird and
they haven't had it around here in a while.

Speaker 2 (29:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 14 (29:38):
No, it's fun and it's a testament to one they
got national ability, but two, they're all willing to put
the work in and compete with one another. And that's
you know, with how violent, aggressive and physical we want
to play on defense, there's real hard to play every staff.
So so you're gonna play violent, you're gonna play aggressive.
But you're gonna know that because I'm gonna take a
most make most of my reps because I know that

(29:58):
we have a good rotation h different guys plan and
uh and it's fun because they all challenge each other,
encourage each other and uh and we got a good
thing going. And that's the kind of culture that we
want to have when guys are always competing in every
way in a in a healthy manner.

Speaker 2 (30:11):
It's been a lot of fun.

Speaker 3 (30:11):
With all those well Kansas State, they got four new
starters up front. What what is it that we can
do to shut down their running attack? And then how
do we use this, you know, new guys up front
to our advantage to pressure Avery Johnson.

Speaker 14 (30:29):
Yeah, I think that, you know, first foremost them you know,
even though they may have some new faces up front,
they have a great culture of physicality and toughness, which
you know starts with the upfront with the big fellas,
and uh so they're going to be you know, a
great challenge for us. And you know that's first and
foremost what we want to attack the run game.

Speaker 2 (30:48):
We don't want people to run the ball.

Speaker 14 (30:50):
That's a that's a culture stat. When you look at
the running attack and rushing attempts and rushing average, that's
a culture stat. And you know, for us, see was
on the ball against that's an important important thing to us.
So using our guys in the best ways to maximize
their abilities, and you know, so the way we use
them because of their abilities and also ways that we

(31:10):
can possibly poke holes and think, uh a different way
structurally we can attack case State for the what they're
trying to do and I mean they got they got
unbelievable talent up front. They got a great quarterback I'm
not throwing the ball, but running. I mean, he's a
big sucker that's fast and makes plays with his legs,
his dynamic. And they got a good group of running
backs that are gonna be dynamic, and good tight ends

(31:30):
that will block to not don't just forget about them.

Speaker 2 (31:32):
But but it's gonna be fun.

Speaker 14 (31:33):
It's a great challenge for the guys to take him
just like everything, shoot, attack the week of practice and
play with the right mentality and and good things happened
to Oh right man, good luck this week.

Speaker 3 (31:41):
I think it's gonna be a great game. Looking forward
to it. Absolutely appreciate you, coach.

Speaker 1 (31:46):
Thank you, Ricky, you did another fantastic job. I'm I'm shocked,
but I'm happy, happy for you. He's speechless because I
gave a compeau pick him up off the police.

Speaker 2 (32:02):
Hey, hey, watch out, Steve. I think he's going after
your job.

Speaker 1 (32:06):
That's fine with me. And he does. He does go
after his money, Bud, Yeah, tell you in the house.

Welcome back to the Holly Huddle. I'm here with lamont Ricky,
the Honley's and in the house. Now we have Tom Tencliffe,
great quarterback from the early eighties. Tom. He looks like
you still play well.

Speaker 2 (37:27):
Looks can be deceiving. You got biceps, you using your equipment?

Speaker 9 (37:37):
Oh yeah, yeah, no, thanks for having me. Great to
be here, Great to be in the Hunley huddle. First
time I've been able to be in a huddle with
these guys.

Speaker 2 (37:45):
Are always on the.

Speaker 1 (37:46):
DeFi yeah, true, don't hurt me. Don't hurt me. How
often do you come back? I know you have some
people in the house in the stadium.

Speaker 9 (37:55):
Yeah so this year, last year too, but recent time.
Trying to get down here as often as possible and
stay down here for at least through the football season.
I have two daughters here, junior Roxanne and freshman Gwen.
It's their first semester here at school, so there's a

(38:17):
good reason to get down here as much as possible.

Speaker 1 (38:20):
Yes, these guys love you. I don't know if you
know that or not, but they think the world of you.
How was it with them watching them play?

Speaker 2 (38:28):
These guys here? Yes? Yes, are you kidding me? It
was the.

Speaker 9 (38:32):
Greatest experience ever, and especially now as you get older
and you look back, it was an absolute privilege and
you know, one of the special moments in my life.

Speaker 2 (38:43):
Really and thankful.

Speaker 9 (38:45):
There are another reason I try to get down here
all the time, because they're both down here and it's
just a joy being around them.

Speaker 1 (38:51):
Ricky, go ahead and grab that grab that mike, just
because how was it watching him play?

Speaker 3 (38:59):
Tom? Tom brought back Arizona football. I mean when Mark
Fulcher got injured and blew out his knee, Tom Tonercliffe
stepped stepped in and Wally pipped him and never stopped me.
It just set records. He's one of the all time
leading passers. He's uh, you know, he's a special guy.
I mean all the greatest wins that we had in
our area. Tom Tonercliffe was the quarterback USC at US

(39:22):
see Notre Dame.

Speaker 2 (39:23):
At Notre Dame u c l A.

Speaker 3 (39:26):
The dude was phenomenal a su you know, after they
had clinched and they were going to the roads, but
we still spanked.

Speaker 1 (39:32):
Them because you because you had him. Was there kind
of ever a worry in those big games because it
looks like the big game, Tom, No.

Speaker 3 (39:40):
We had an opportunity to play complimentary football. We get
the ball back, they score, you know, and that's that's
the way the game goes, you know. And and I
had a better seat, you know, because I was a freshman.
I was behind these guys, So I had an opportunity
to sit on the sideline and watch. Actually both of
them performed, yeah, you know, at a high level. And
everything that Ricky done on defense, Tom done for us

(40:03):
on offense, he did the same thing for us on offense.
And he and he brought our our offense, you know,
to national level in regards to people recognizing Arizona football
on offense side.

Speaker 2 (40:17):
Of the ball.

Speaker 3 (40:17):
So I mean, and like I say, I had opportunities
just to sit down and enjoy it.

Speaker 1 (40:22):
Tom, Where does that magic come from?

Speaker 2 (40:24):
You know?

Speaker 9 (40:24):
That's extraordinary words from extraordinary men.

Speaker 2 (40:27):
I'll tell you.

Speaker 9 (40:28):
It's it's the age old saying is the quarterbacks get
too much credit when they win, and too much blame
when you lose, and then which one probably, so that's
the problem. But you know, it was a it was
a collective effort. I wish I could say that I
had that much to do with it. Yeah, I made

(40:49):
some plays, but everybody did. It was a collective spirit
in that group of young men that that was the magic.

Speaker 2 (40:55):
It was a lightning strike.

Speaker 1 (40:58):
Well there had to be a lot of lightning strikes.
There was just not just one.

Speaker 9 (41:02):
Yeah, no, it's true. I mean it scoring points by
itself doesn't win the game. So, you know, I always
knew we had I had all all the confidence in
the world in our defense and Ricky leading the way,
and there was a bunch of great guys and great players.
But we were scrappers and tough, and you know, we

(41:23):
weren't practicing and air conditioning buildings. We were walking across
Sixth Street in a converted parking lot outdoors and dodging
cars on the weeks we lost.

Speaker 2 (41:36):
Yeah, and we might not get fit. Yeah, there was
some nights.

Speaker 9 (41:40):
Yeah, there was a It was a different it was
a different era for sure, different time, but we all
had the warrior mentality. I personally had a little bit
of a chip on my shoulder because I was always questioned,
and I mean that's true with most athletes.

Speaker 2 (41:55):
Everybody's got their critic.

Speaker 1 (41:58):
You're six foot, Yeah, I'm six six foot.

Speaker 2 (42:01):
But that was too small and too right.

Speaker 1 (42:03):
Let me go there, because Noah suffers from that right
at least the label.

Speaker 9 (42:08):
Absolutely, But look at him. Look at to speak to Noah.
He's a winner. The guy's a winner. Yeah, he just
he's a leader, he's a winner, he's a quality person.
He's also a great athlete, and he has an instinct
for the game. So the height, Yeah, in certain situations,
it can certainly be a benefit, but it's not a

(42:31):
requirement to be a success all the time.

Speaker 3 (42:35):
Tom, speaking of Noah, you know, Noah come in with
a new offensive coordinator and he seemed like this coordinator
that he has is all about relationships, you know, you know,
getting that relationship, getting to know each other. You being
a quarterback, do you can you reflect backed on relationships
with offensive coordinators that you had.

Speaker 2 (42:54):
Yeah, that's a great question. Absolutely. I think that's a key.

Speaker 9 (42:58):
That's a key to every buddy's success, is that mutual respect.
And Coach Seth is a spectacular addition to the program.
I think coach Brennan has done a remarkable job bringing
him in. And exciting style of offense fits Noah's skill
set perfectly. And with Seth's background as a quarterback, successful quarterback,

(43:22):
He's got the right perspective. But having that relationship relationship
and that mutual respect for me, it was Steve AxMan
was our quarterback coach and offensive coordinator, and yeah, we
had a strong relationship and he trusted me. I trusted him,
and I think that played well throughout the you know

(43:44):
adversity we went through.

Speaker 2 (43:46):
So Rick and I we had our defense.

Speaker 3 (43:47):
Our coach was Rogie, and we played because we didn't
want to, you know, disappoint coach Roki. You know, I
was afraid of coach Rogie. You know, we want to
say I was afraid of him. So as far as
when you're on the offensive side of the ball, I mean,
is there any fear it is any you know, don't
want to disappoint the coach in that relationship.

Speaker 9 (44:09):
Well absolutely, yeah, you want to follow it to a
t and you do everything you can to not disappoint
the coach. But also my teammates, that was the big
thing is to not you know, let your teammates down.
So everybody's out there killing themselves and you got to
do your job too. And we try and we know
what to do every time, and sometimes it doesn't go

(44:31):
the way we try. We don't always need the coach
to tell us to not throw an interception.

Speaker 2 (44:37):
We know not to throw an interception.

Speaker 9 (44:40):
So I would always point those things out to coach,
where you know, pointing out the obvious negatives is not,
in my view, yah, successful way to coach.

Speaker 1 (44:53):
Lennan says the same thing. You know, I'm not excited
because it's not that's not the time of the place
to be excited. Right on the sideline, Ricky, do you
remember a time or two when you said this kid
Tom is pretty good.

Speaker 2 (45:07):
For a moment or two. Man, I'll never forget.

Speaker 3 (45:11):
Well, we're playing this coummy is up North and they
come in here and they won the conference.

Speaker 2 (45:18):
They're going to rose Bow.

Speaker 3 (45:19):
And they got us backed up on the five yard
line and they're gonna they We're bringing the pressure. They're
bringing all the pressure right up in Tom's face and
he pops one to Brad Anderson and he's still running.

Speaker 2 (45:31):
He's still running today.

Speaker 3 (45:33):
Touchdown, Tom is so cool in the pocket under pressure.
I mean that's the thing. You love him. You love
because he got the job done. I mean, I tell
you what, he was our nor fafeeda. You know, he
got it done right. So you're telling me he's a winner,
a big time winner. He's always been a winner, guys,
And you guys showed it. I mean you talked about

(45:53):
being tough.

Speaker 1 (45:53):
It was I call him the lunch pale guys, and
that was both offensively and defensively.

Speaker 2 (45:58):
Yes, well he was lunch bail, Larry lunchbox. No, it's true.

Speaker 9 (46:07):
Well, it's some mentality you have to have, you know,
And it's uh, as soon as you start thinking you're
better than everybody or that you can't be replaced, you're
doomed for failure. It's war every time you step on
that field, and you got to perform to your highest level.

Speaker 2 (46:24):
But that was our that was our mentality collectively.

Speaker 9 (46:28):
But who knew, you know, it was such a great
experience that you get these people from all walks of
life and all over the country together and there were
some just spectacular athletes on top of all of that
as well.

Speaker 2 (46:40):
So it does take a little bit more than just
the will to win. You got to still be able.

Speaker 9 (46:45):
To step up in this At this level of environment,
these athletes are just over the top, and it's only
they've only gotten better.

Speaker 1 (46:53):
If you don't mind me, when did you actually take
over for good when you wally pipped? The reason I asked,
The reason I ask is because you have a lot
of numbers behind you. You've done a heck, you would
have had a ton of numbers.

Speaker 9 (47:04):
Behind Yeah, it was my freshman year, true freshman nineteen
eighty was the second half of the Notre Dame game
here at home. It was about I think it was
the sixth game, fifth or sixth game of the season.
And then yeah, then I played the rest of my career.
There were a couple of ins and outs. I had injuries,

(47:27):
and then you know, coach sometimes was trying to create
I don't know what competition. It never really panned out,
so I always ended up back in there. And yeah,
we were you know, you look back and very thankful
for the success and the numbers and all that, and

(47:48):
it's due to a lot of great players around me.
But we had a very modest offense. You know, we
were if we threw the ball thirty times a game.
Then that was over the top throwing game.

Speaker 2 (47:59):
Right before we go.

Speaker 1 (48:00):
You're one of our biggest sponsors, or a great one
of our great sponsors. Tell us about Everfit.

Speaker 2 (48:05):
So I started this gym a few years ago. It's
called ever Fit.

Speaker 9 (48:08):
It's in downtown Burbank, and it started off as kind
of a hobby type thing on the side, but it's
just turned into a full blown passion and it's we're
kind of changing the way things are done in the industry.

Speaker 2 (48:23):
It's a full service gym.

Speaker 9 (48:25):
We have all kinds of studios, plates, reformers, spin studios,
yoga studios, rooftop yoga. It's in a combined space under
roof and outdoors of about fifty thousand feet and it's
everything for one price. So you pay one price and
it's unlimited, every studio, every activity.

Speaker 2 (48:48):
So how do you can ask your agent? Oh sure, yeah,
sixty three sixty three?

Speaker 1 (48:54):
How can I look like you because we don't get
the beer. That's what I need to do is get
into ship.

Speaker 2 (48:58):
Yeah, em a fit. Yeah, make fitness a priority.

Speaker 9 (49:03):
You know it's hard and it's impressing, but.

Speaker 1 (49:06):
Never mind, it makes me work. Never Mind, You're gonna
be tired now, But what a fantastic you look great?

Speaker 4 (49:13):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (49:14):
He does, I mean, he really does. I mean, and
I mean he's such a special guy. And you know
we we we said that because the fact that we
played with him. But but he has such a big
heart and not just a great football player, but to me,
he's just a great person all around. So whenever I
call on him, he's there, and he's always in town.

Speaker 2 (49:31):
You know, I can always you know, get a hug
and a smile from him.

Speaker 1 (49:34):
Yeah, we talked about this not too long ago, maybe
the first show. How much you guys enjoy being together,
whether he's from Phoenix, from Burbank or la or wherever.

Speaker 2 (49:44):
How big is a group? Our group? I mean every
I mean it's a big group. Four years of school. Yeah,
that's four.

Speaker 1 (49:53):
Classes that you'll meet, Like you go to the game. Now,
there'll be how many together it varies.

Speaker 3 (49:58):
I mean, you know, this week it probably be twenty
guys out there.

Speaker 2 (50:01):
You know, I think.

Speaker 3 (50:02):
Homecoming is the biggest time. You know, that's when everybody
comes back to plus guys. I'll show up and things
that I've taken on nature, you know, and you can
only get this with football, well, with sports, sure, but
more with football, I think, because the numbers are much
bigger naturally, you know, and we god, you sit down
and you beat each other up and you hug each other,
you know. So I think, you know, the game of

(50:22):
football leads to these moments and.

Speaker 1 (50:24):
Go through big games. So time I asked Ricky about you?
What about them? What did you What do you remember?

Speaker 9 (50:30):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (50:31):
I was.

Speaker 9 (50:33):
I was afraid of Ricky for most till maybe my
senior year. Yeah, and then he brought his brother along.
I'm like, oh my gosh, yeah, there's two of them. No,
it's just incredible respect, you know, kind of jaw dropping ability.

Speaker 1 (50:52):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (50:52):
Separate from that physical like I've never seen somebody move
so fast, so big, so strong, side to side lateral speed,
which that's why people always talking about the forty yard
sprint times and all this athleticism, and I don't give

(51:12):
it the full weight that some people do. I really
feel like it's not a forty yard game. I think
it's a lateral game and it's maybe a five to
ten yard game.

Speaker 2 (51:22):
Yeah. So, but separate from Ricky's.

Speaker 9 (51:25):
Athleticism, just his spirit, you know, he could just control
the emotion in the locker room he was just he's
just a natural leader, natural leader.

Speaker 2 (51:37):
He's a man's man.

Speaker 9 (51:38):
He's a guy you want to follow, run through brick
walls for so, I had all the confidence in the world.
I knew if the defense wasn't doing their job, it
wasn't because of Ricky or Lamont.

Speaker 2 (51:50):
Then Lamont came along. I know Ricky got all the attention,
and rightfully so, but he got my tackles all the time.
Not right. He's quick to remind me of that. Yeah,
I guess. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (52:08):
So, Tom, you've seen a couple of games from Arizona
this year. What's your quick evaluation.

Speaker 9 (52:14):
Improvement that it's all improvement over last year. Love the design,
Love the new coach changes, love the uh the structure
of everything. Really looking forward to today. You know this
is a little off topic, but I end up not
loving when these teams.

Speaker 2 (52:35):
Have these easy don conference of home opponents. I don't
I don't know who that helps. I don't think it
helps anybody.

Speaker 9 (52:42):
But yeah, but you know it's it does a disservice.
So I think tonight is going to reveal, uh, you know,
kind of where we're at, and I think we'll do great.
Two good tune ups and you know, just got to
stay healthy this year and be on trap. But I
think there they got the momentum started. Hopefully you can

(53:05):
keep it going and you know, carry it through.

Speaker 3 (53:09):
Well.

Speaker 1 (53:09):
It's great to have you here with these two guys.
Don't let them hurt you. I know they won't. They
love you too much. Guys, great show today, Thank you Steve,
thanks all the fun. Thank you for letting me join
the crew here. You're probably a honey and don't even
know it.

Speaker 2 (53:24):
Yeah, he knows it. He knows great.

Speaker 1 (53:30):
Well, thanks everybody for listening to the honey Huddle. We'll
catch you in a few weeks.
