Speaker 1 (00:01):
Legendary takes from Wildcat greats Ricky Hunley and Lamont Hunley
with Steve Rivera all things Arizona Football. This is the
Hunley Huddle, power by Nova Home Loans.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the Honey Huddle. I'm here
with Ricky Hunley and just host David Adams. I'm Steve Rivera.
Welcome to another big game, guys, another big game. When
you guys were players, I guess every weekend was a
big game.
Speaker 3 (00:27):
Every week's a big game.
Speaker 4 (00:28):
I mean, no matter the opponent, no matter the opponent,
you gotta win them all. You know, you at least
make the best effort to win them all. And it
wasn't easy for us one hundred percent. The thing about
it is that Arizona was never looked at as a
power school, so everybody we played was pumped up more
than we were, regardless. So every game was a big
(00:49):
game for us, and that's why we've won the majority
of our games through both of our career.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
I don't know if you guys remember or probably even
cared at the time or now. You guys played a
lot of rank teams, right You just beat a lot
of ranked teams and you guys showed up for the
ranked teams. What do you tell these guys today when
they're playing a ranked team.
Speaker 4 (01:08):
In the big games. You got to play your best,
You gotta you know, you got to bring your a game.
You just can't row your helmet out there and throw
your logo out there and think that it's.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Gonna be enough.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
I mean, we experienced that a few weeks ago when
we went up to Iowa State. They were a ranked team.
They were prepared and they were ready, and we didn't
get off the bus. And then last week, you know,
we were hitting on all cylinders.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Yeah, it's easy to say that the guys know this,
that they have to be ready. How much do you
have to tell them as a coach as a coach
or do you not tell it? And they said they
should know this.
Speaker 4 (01:39):
It's a constant reminder, I mean, because you know, uh,
players are all different and you're always preaching and promoting
that team aspect, and so everybody always have to be
on the same page. So you never ever go through
a week without reminding the guys what's that stake. I
think one of the things that people have to remember
(01:59):
is the people to come up with the rankings. They're
not playing, so it doesn't matter. It's eleven man on
eleven man, and who has the most heart ninety nine
percent of the time wins.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Do you remember your times against the rank teams? You
guys played better or did it not? You know what
I'm saying. You got up for every game, But did
you guys get juiced for these types of rank games?
Speaker 3 (02:21):
I know I did well.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
Everybody was never thought I could do a damn thing,
so I was up every damn game. And so for
me it had to be because they were seemingly, in
my mind looking for reasons not to play me. So
I had to always be pumped up because if I had,
you know, a forty yard game, oh well we knew it.
He's just not big enough to take the pound in that.
(02:43):
So my for me, I was up every every week.
And then when you have a great game against a
ranked team, now you're really the man.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Ye b yu.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
I think you guys have a history, right, don't you
back in the day with them a time or two.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
Well, Arizona had history with by you before us. Okay,
that's why we didn't pay BYU. Doing my career, I've
coached against the BYU team when I was at Memphis,
right and we beat him in the bowl game and
it was a knockdown, drag out all the way.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
Till the end, like fifty three to fifty one something
like that.
Speaker 2 (03:17):
And it's always seemingly younger players against the older experienced players.
How do you get the younger players to understand now
a too have to step up because you're going to
get the veterans.
Speaker 4 (03:29):
Well, the thing is, it's like, you know, you want
to spend the rest of your life just getting beat
up by a big brother, you know, because it's kind
of like playing against your big brother. And uh, one
thing I learned as a kid is that big brother
is not afraid to hurt you. And then you get
in a fight, but usually the younger kid is afraid
they're gonna hurt the older brother. So you need to
get over that because you know, we all feel the same,
(03:50):
you know. And so when you punch a guy in
the mouth, he's going to recognize that, you know, he's
got a ball game right.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Earlier before the show started, David, you talked about Arizona
being running thirteenth offensively in the Big twelve. Came as
a surprise to you that needs to pick up definitely.
Speaker 4 (04:04):
I mean, and I was just little just by reading
you have Big twelve and you're the thirteenth. That's not
a good situation to be in sixteen. No, I understand that,
but I mean to being the big twelve and beat
you to the bottom. To be near the bottom, I mean,
you're you're hanging under the to a cliff with your
fingernails in it. What it tells me is that we
(04:27):
don't have to respect you because you guys aren't that
good anyway according to the rankings. But you may have
that day, but not according to the rankings of where.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
You're at as far as the offense is concerned.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
So ricky last week, Lamont and yourself, we Lamont specifically
was a little critical of Noah. He had a fantastic game.
Does that kind of wipe things out.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
To conference player of the week? Yeah, fantastic game touchdown.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Does that soothe you think that would have soothed Lamot today? Oh?
Speaker 4 (04:57):
Absolutely, I mean it can't beat an Everybody in the
conference recognize it.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
Who cares about Lamont thinks you never have?
Speaker 4 (05:06):
The thing about it is that we want consistency. That's
what Laman is saying, you know, you come out, you
have five touchdowns one game and then you have six
interceptions the next. It's not balancing out right. So that's
what Lamon. I'm assuming he thought Ricky knows him better
than me. But I'm just assuming that that's what he meant.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
That said.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
One weekend you got Oklahoma State. Now you have b YU.
Totally different playing situations.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
Yeah, well, you know, a b YU team's gonna come
in here and they're gonna be bigger, faster, stronger. They're
gonna play a lot of man pressure. They're gonna play
a lot of zone pressure. They're gonna show pressure and
drop eight and rush three. So you gotta be ready for,
you know, the whole gamut of things that they're gonna
do to try to disguise the coverage and make you
(05:51):
make mistakes. So your throat's gonna have to be precise,
your throw's gonna have to come out quick. You're gonna
have to do a good job up front to leave
he ate the pressure that they're going to you know,
push up inside, and you know, just take what they
give you and just keep moving the chains. I mean,
don't always think you need to get a big chunk play,
you know.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
Every series.
Speaker 2 (06:11):
So I'll ask Dave this before I asked you Ricky,
what have you noticed about the team offensively? Because then
you go to the games day you see things. What
would you grade the offense one? And then what have
you seen good and bad?
Speaker 3 (06:24):
I think that.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
They need to run the ball more. And it's not
just because that's my position. They have a lot of
success running the ball, and the minute they have like
a twenty yard game, then they'll throw three passes in
a row and I'm like, feed him, keep feeding him.
He's getting some momentum going. That's one thing that I think.
And offensively, I Noah doesn't step into his passes a
(06:46):
lot because there's people coming and I understand what he's saying,
but you got to step into a lot of pets
and that's what a lot of errors run on the
passes that he throws. I think that they need to
have a more be confidence type thing because they are
they when they want to play, they're successful. And today
the big thing about today b YU players. Someone's thirty
(07:08):
five forty years old, right, so you're playing grown men.
You're not playing peers. So you know that those are
nfl ages that you got to go against. And I
think if they just settle down and say, look, I
came here to show you that you're not supposed to
be here, not that I'm ready to compete, they'll be successful.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
Rickie, So he used the word confidence. You were around
the guys during the week last week, you thought they
looked good. The day of the game, we had you
on the show and they didn't show up.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
What did you see this week? I saw a very
confident team. I mean they were clicking on all cylinders
as far as execution, balls out, protection, you know, the
effort to the football.
Speaker 3 (07:47):
I mean, I have a.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
Really good feeling about this game going into this game.
The other thing is like, you know Ishmael body that
kids special. Like I said, feed him, give him the ball,
you know, because I mean he he do things when
he got the ball in his hand.
Speaker 5 (08:01):
You know.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
Sometime it will be a screen, sometimes it'll be a run,
you know. But he's a small guy and he likes
to pound it up in there. But we got Quincy
Craig back. You know, we have guys around him that
were beat up and he was having to carry the
load and so having people back healthy, is going to
help your run game, is going to help set up
the play action, and it's going to help Noah to
(08:22):
be more efficient in the pocket.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Right.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
So later we have Brennan on tape and then we
have a coach Gonzales, So talk more about the defense,
which has been very very strong. In fact, you beat
an offensive player. Howld prist have you been about or
thought about the defense from you?
Speaker 4 (08:38):
But well, Arizona has a history of good defenses from
the late seventies all the way through. So it doesn't
surprise me when the defense is good because defense is always.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
Attack, attack, attack.
Speaker 4 (08:52):
If you got an angry person, they're easier to coach.
Kill the guy in that other jersey offensive people. Because
we're more smooth and sexy and handsome, we we do
things a little different.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
What did you tell him early? Who won games? Defense?
Speaker 4 (09:08):
Right?
Speaker 3 (09:08):
Well, defense wins games, but we get the girls. He's yours.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
Well, he's always ready for the fashion show. He's a
bathing suit model. You know, somebody got to do it. Yeah,
he walked in the studio with his piedos on, you know,
ready to go. I just know that defense is the
key to long term success. You can have a great
offensive output. But for consistent success, you got to be
(09:37):
able to play stop people, whether it's basketball, football, ping pong.
Speaker 3 (09:42):
You name it.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Well, and Ricky's been high on Gonzales all year. I
thinks it calls him the Guru, the master, and he's
been so far, so good.
Speaker 4 (09:50):
Yeah, I mean when you just look at the numbers,
I mean, compare this team here to the team last year. Okay,
total defense we were one hundred more than fifth.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
We're ten. Passing defense we were one hundred and two eleven.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
Rushing defense we were ninety eight twenty fifth, turnover margin
seventy seven seven. And team tackle for losses we're a
ninetieth and we're four fourth.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
These are national rankings. And you bought up a point
as well. End zone. About the end zone, your rid zone,
no passes allowed in the end zone, haven't getting up
a touchdown? And there to me when you said that,
I think you're right. That's pretty that's pretty impressive. It's
very impressive. And you know, but it aligns with coach
gonzales philosophy.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
You know, shoot your gun, don't hold back, don't break down,
just go after him. You know, if you missed your
buddy should be there and so and hence it's worked
for us. We're not too sure how the crowd's going
to be today. I thought Rain or whatever should be
better than forty. I had a dream last night, the
sixteen hundred people in the stands and we killed them.
Speaker 3 (11:04):
Where did you get this drink?
Speaker 4 (11:06):
It just happened. Are you being serious? I'm serious. It
doesn't matter who's in the stands. And you're right, we
got to play ball. You're right, You're right, that's true.
But by he's gonna bring its contingent. You guys need
fans as well. We'll see what happens. I'm not sure
Rain are shining right now. But if there is an
advantage playing at home, what is it? I personally don't
(11:29):
really care where I play. It's nice to be cheered
when you do something correct or something positive, but I
love to go to your house and beat you.
Speaker 3 (11:38):
But it makes me even more happy.
Speaker 4 (11:42):
But you know, I never really was a big home
away where that was so important to me. I'll never
forget the feeling that I had when we beat great teams,
good teams at home with a sellout crowd and the
cheers in the band playing and the bare down song.
(12:02):
I mean, it's so crystal clear. It is a great feeling.
And once our kids get a taste of that, they
don't ever want it to let it go. Once our
fans get a taste of that, you know, you.
Speaker 2 (12:12):
Know, well, once they get a taste of that, they'll
continue to come back, right, and your dreams might double.
Speaker 4 (12:18):
Well they should double anyway, you know, and the hot
Weather's gone.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
It's like no, no, you're right seventy some degrees, you know.
I'm sure you saw the Chuck Cecil letter, open letter
to the paper. He wants people to show up. There's
no reason not to go to the game. Support the
team that you support.
Speaker 4 (12:33):
There's never a reason not to go to the game
because there's nothing else in Tucson going on, So why
would you not support the biggest thing that you got here.
And I don't like Fairweather fans anyway. When you're ten
and oh, everybody's there. But when you're oh and ten,
everybody just becomes a professional athlete and they just know
(12:55):
what you need to be doing and not be doing so.
I Fairweather fans just really, you know, love me or
hate me, whichever way is fine, but just pick one.
Speaker 2 (13:05):
And stick show and show up, right, yeah, show up.
It gives you more juice though. I like the pats
on the back.
Speaker 4 (13:13):
You know, when you're out there on the field and
and and you know, and you're stopping them on key
third down stops or fourth down stops or you're scoring
on defense. In the Spanish cherning, you can't hear. I mean,
I can see the stands moving. I remember seeing that.
It was it was amazing, you see. And that's a
defensive standpoint because offensively, you don't want them too loud
(13:34):
because you got to hear what's going on. Defensively, it
doesn't matter. We're gonna react to what you do. And
I'm not saying that it's not a beautiful thing when
something happens and everybody's cheering that. I'm not saying that
I'm against that. It's just totally different type of thing
from offensive defensive standpoint, because he doesn't care what what
the cadence is. He doesn't care if the quarterback's changing
(13:55):
kill when everybody moves Keill, I need to know what
he was going on. So I it's a double edged sword,
That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (14:03):

Legendary takes from Wildcat greats Ricky Hunley and Lamont Hunley
with Steve Rivera, all Things Arizona Football. This is the
Hunley Huddle, power by Nova Home Loans.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
Hey, welcome back to the Hondey Huddle. I'm Steve Rivera

now we're gonna listen to some coaches. First, is coach
knzalts He.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
I'm with coach Gonzales Danny. Great opportunity here.
Speaker 4 (19:07):
We're gonna be facing BYU now b Yu offensively, Man,
they really thrive on being physical. They got a veteran
offensive line and they like to pound the ball. Uh,
do we have the talent the matchup physically?
Speaker 12 (19:22):
Absolutely? I think.
Speaker 9 (19:23):
I think both teams are going to play a game
in which we're gonna find out who the tougher guy is.
Speaker 12 (19:29):
And I think that's kind of what we pride ourselves.
Speaker 2 (19:31):
On.
Speaker 9 (19:32):
I know that's about coach to Tackey and those guys
pride themselves on and J. J. Hill does a great
job for what they do defensively. Aaron Roderick has been
around the West Coast for a long time, does a
great job offensively with what they do. And I think
between myself and Coach Day we have the same attitude.
I mean, the toughest guys gon win out Saturday. And
the advantages that BYU has had over the years is
(19:53):
their guys oftentimes because of the missions that they go.
Speaker 12 (19:56):
On, they're a little bit more mature, they're a little older.
Their offensive three of them.
Speaker 9 (20:00):
I mean they have a twenty seventeen high school grad
starting at right guards, so twenty seventeen, twenty seventeen, so
he's got you married, he has two kids, And I
think that.
Speaker 12 (20:09):
Maturity factor is like go dad, dad's stranger.
Speaker 9 (20:11):
You are telling our guys so they better be ready
for a battle because it's gonna be fun.
Speaker 4 (20:15):
No.
Speaker 9 (20:15):
I think By's probably the most athletic they've been up
front in a while, which good for them. They're doing
a great job. And then Martin, they're at back LJ.
Speaker 13 (20:23):
Martin number four, he's violent, he tries to kill you,
So it's still be exciting.
Speaker 4 (20:28):
Well, they're gonna be facing some grown man and it's
gonna be fun to watch. Now, Now, going into this
game versus b YU, what are some of the potential
challenges you think that we're gonna face and what do
we need to do defensively to be at our best?
Speaker 12 (20:42):
Well, one, we had to stop the run. We can't
let him. We can't let l J. Martin get started.
Speaker 9 (20:45):
If he gets started, then everything works because then Bear
has time to sit back there in the pocket and
Bear Backmeyer.
Speaker 12 (20:50):
He's a true freshman.
Speaker 9 (20:52):
He's really played well and he's gotten better every single week,
so we have to be able to get pressure on
him to get him off his spot.
Speaker 12 (20:58):
But if LJ.
Speaker 9 (20:59):
Mar is able to run the ball, and that means
we're stacking the box and having to play a lot
of man coverage, and he's been really good in man
coverage this year, so we've got to find a way
to get him off his spot, be able to control
the box, stop the run like we've dedicated to all
season long. And then if if we get to him,
we got to get him to turn the ball over.
So I think Bart's playing really high level for a
true freshman.
Speaker 4 (21:21):
YEP.
Speaker 3 (21:21):
Now, defensively, what is it that we can do to
control the temple.
Speaker 4 (21:26):
Usually offensives control the temple of the game and to
keep the momentum on their side.
Speaker 13 (21:31):
Well, what if we can we do defensively to keep
it on the ourt side. Well, this is the exciting part.
They actually huddle on every single play, so you don't
see that very often. Now it's actually going to be
quite challenging because they do speed huddle. They huddle about
five yards off the ball and then they sprint out.
Speaker 12 (21:45):
And get lined up.
Speaker 9 (21:46):
So we have to be on high alert for what
they do because they do want to do a bunch
of trick plays that will try to get you with
reversus double passes. And they have a couple of guys
that play quarterback in high school. Pinkston number eleven. He's
throwing five balls this year, threw one on us last year.
So we have to be able to control their tempo.
They want to speed huller. We have to be able
to get lined up right away, and then if we
(22:09):
don't give up big plays, that's where they have their
molt take because.
Speaker 12 (22:11):
They'll get up there on the ball and they'll get going.
If we don't give up big plays, we can keep
them out of their rhythm.
Speaker 3 (22:16):
Great. Oh, I look forward to it.
Speaker 4 (22:19):
It's gonna be on heavyweight challenge fight this this week
and I can't wait to see this game in our
guys respond.
Speaker 9 (22:26):
Well, it's it's exciting because you got I mean, they're
right date and the country and total defense word tenth uh.
Speaker 12 (22:32):
I mean challenge does is? Are we better than we're not? Though?
We're gonna find out who's going to be the badest
badass on on Saturday.
Speaker 4 (22:37):
It's going to be the dude on the block. Exactly right,
Thank you, coach, Thank you bare dow bearde. Yeah, one thing,
Ricky you didn't mention, or that he didn't mention. Trace
Smith is not here today. What does that mean? How's
that going to be offective? Well, Trey's been in and
out most of the early part of the season, and
(22:57):
so those guys, how you know, is it a plug
and play, plug and player? It's it's you know, it's
a good thing because it's turning into a plug and play.
You've got guys that can step into his role and
pick up the slack with Trace Smith. I mean you
still got Chase Kennedy, who's doing a great job, and
and you got I said, kid, he just got back
(23:20):
the linebacker and I'm sixteen, Oh my god, and then
had a brain fard here for a second. But I'll
get it here in a minute. But uh at two
sacks and Iowa State game. So we uh, you got people,
we got people. You're you're not you're not ranked for
you're not you're not ranked for no reason.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
Yeah, we still got guys that can bring the heat
and bring the pressure. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
And I didn't realize that they were that highly ranked
to too on their defensive end. So like you said,
it's gonna be a heavyweight fight, you would surprise me.
And and not that we get into this, but one
and a half, two and a half points, uh by
he was favored against the ranked team. That that shows
a lot of respect for Arizona. Well, we're gaining respect,
you know, because you know, when you come out of
(24:05):
the box and you play right those early games, nobody
really cares. You know, you're coming off of a full
win season and nobody has any respect for you. But
then you know, you play a conference opponent and you
beat them in Kansas State and then you come out
and you play Iowa State and you don't even show up.
Speaker 4 (24:21):
So people are not sure, but you know those people
that are, you know, ranking those teams. One thing we're
sure about is how well our guys are playing on defense.
And I always said, I if we can match offensively
statistically what we're doing on defense, we can play in
line up against anybody and have a great.
Speaker 2 (24:40):
So we talked about this during the regular show this week.
Speaker 3 (24:43):
Up are you?
Speaker 2 (24:44):
We're five games in. I don't know much about this
Arizona football team. They didn't haven't played anybody real tough.
So what do you know?
Speaker 3 (24:52):
What do you think?
Speaker 4 (24:52):
You know, the defense isn't going to lose the game,
That's what I do know. And the offense shows up.
Good things have happened, but the defense isn't gonna lose
the game. And it's been that way for many many years.
That traditional. You know, we've lost a lot of games
(25:12):
over the years that are very very close because our
defense always kept us in there and the offense just
wasn't able to put up another touchdown or another field
goal or things like that. And it's gotten back to that.
Last year was miserable, and both sides of the ball
were both low. So that's why the turnaround last year.
(25:33):
You know, if we would have played these we wouldn't
have been four and oh last year. It would have
been two and two or three and one something last year.
But this year, because the defense has come to play,
they're like, look, if we're gonna lose, it's gonna be
seven to three. They were not gonna get blown out.
And I think just the mental philosophy of the defense
(25:54):
has been the big, big difference. Okay, we're gonna go
to coach Brennan right now. All right, let's get it
Coach b Now, I tell you what I'm getting a few.
This team is a team that's a true brotherhood. How
do we get to this point where what we're doing
and to maintain this brotherhood this far into the season.
(26:17):
I mean, I've seen things break up. This team is
all on the same page all the time.
Speaker 2 (26:23):
No, Ricky, You're right, you know.
Speaker 14 (26:24):
I think that's one of those things that like, as
a coaching staff and even the leaders on the team,
the players on the team, they have to fight for
the brotherhood.
Speaker 2 (26:31):
They have to fight for the redline every single day.
Speaker 14 (26:34):
It's just with the team is as big as a
football team, it's easy for their you know, for it
to get divided somehow, one way or another over playing
time or winning or losing or anything. I mean, it's
something off the field. So, you know, I think it's
something that our guys have done a great job. Our
coaches and players are fighting for every day. Now by
you's got a talented core of linebackers. What we we
(26:57):
have to do offensively to neutralize these guys, I think,
you know, it's it's really interesting. You know, b YU
is such a solid sound football team. They could do
everything right. They play their butts off. I got a
ton of respect for them, you know. And with this team,
we have to understand that we have to be patient
with our scheme and understand that, you know, how do
(27:20):
we find ways to just move the chains, Like how
do we possess the football take our shots when we
get them. But you know, just with that defensive front
being so physical and so athletic, you know, we're going
to have to do a great job of sticking on
blocks and you know, finishing to the to the echo
of the whistle.
Speaker 3 (27:38):
Now, do you think that this is.
Speaker 4 (27:39):
Going to be probably our biggest challenge in that this
chess match of the game with when it comes to
BYU in the way they disguise on defense.
Speaker 14 (27:49):
I think so, I think, you know, they're really multiple.
They do a really good job of you know, kind
of moving their pieces around. And because they've been in
this system and they've had the same coaching staff and
they've had the same coaches there, and they've built the
program over the last decade. You know, they've really done
a great job of building it with just the consistency
(28:09):
of leadership and the consistency of development. So these players
know exactly what they're doing. They're just super comfortable in
the scheme.
Speaker 3 (28:17):
They know what it is.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
A lot of those guys are like coaches out there
because they've been in it for so long.
Speaker 3 (28:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (28:22):
No last week you said offensive, we had to have
clean pass protection, quick reads at the quarterback position, and
Noah did all of that leading up to be in
Big twelve offensive player at a week. Can we build
on that this week versus BYU?
Speaker 14 (28:38):
Absolutely, you know, I think that was really everyone was
really really excited for Noah. I know, coming off the
Iowa State game, he was disappointed and frustrated with some
of the throws he made, and I thought he really
did a great job of taking advantage of what we're
getting from Oklahoma State.
Speaker 2 (28:52):
And this game is a little bit similar. You know,
we have to not force things we don't need.
Speaker 14 (28:57):
We can't play hero ball where guys are making up
their own stuff and playing outside the scheme. We got
to let those plays come to us within the within
the scheme, within the game plan. And Noah can make
every throw in the field, So just let let the
game come to him and then take advantage of it
when he can.
Speaker 4 (29:14):
Nice Now, now, coach me, I love the challenge you
put out to our Arizona fan base to sell out.
They Tucson a hostile environment for this BYU game. Now
you did you think our fans really understand how critical
of a role their energy plays into the momentum of
the game and how it can affect the opponent's communication
(29:35):
and adjustments.
Speaker 3 (29:35):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (29:36):
I don't know that they truly understand that, you know.
Speaker 14 (29:38):
I think it's one of those things I think, you know,
I know that when our fans or when you know,
our donors or people come on road trips with us
to the other stadiums and they see those crowds and
they see what that's like and they're like, wow, this
is really impressive.
Speaker 2 (29:53):
You know. Iowa State was like that, at BYU was
like that last year.
Speaker 14 (29:57):
You know, I'm optimistic that this weekend, with parents weekend,
you know, with the Zona Zoo, you know, with the
Greek system firing up, like just everybody coming out and
rallying and really being that twelfth man and really being that,
you know, to make it hard on BYU, And I.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
Think we can do that.
Speaker 3 (30:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (30:16):
I really appreciate you putting out the challenge to our
people like that, because coach, I mean, I get chill
sitting here think about it because I can reflect back
when we had those games here, when UCLA came in
they were number one, and we played USC there and
they were number one. It's electric's electric, and this place
can be as special as any. And I hope you
all step up and meet the challenge this week.
Speaker 2 (30:37):
I hope they do too. I hope they do too,
you know, Like I think it's cool.
Speaker 14 (30:40):
I think there's so many players on this team that
chose to stay here when the transfer portal opened because
they love the University of Arizona. They love the Arizona
football program, they love the city of Tucson. I mean,
they chose to stay for the people here, you know,
And I think that's just like all of us coming
together on a Saturday evening in October to make this
an incredible environment.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
It would be really special.
Speaker 3 (31:01):
Yeah, you chose to come back. I chose to come
to trial for the people.
Speaker 4 (31:06):
And when that jets fly across this weekend to kick
that thing off, I'm telling you what, it's going to
be exciting.
Speaker 2 (31:11):
I can't wait. Thank you, coach, Thank you, Hey, welcome back.
Hey Ricky, you brought up a point that I thought,
and I think it's very important. The camaraderie, the chemistry.
That's important. You guys on the team can give each
other grief inside your you know, give each other, you
and David and all your teammates, but when time comes,
(31:34):
you're pulling pulling rope on one way.
Speaker 3 (31:36):
You know, pulling the rope the same way. You see
that here.
Speaker 4 (31:38):
Absolutely, I mean that's the thing that amazed me and
just in their work ethic last week after you know,
coming back from the you know, you have decent win.
If it was against Oklahoma State, a struggling team, but
they were back to business. It's all business. You know,
it's time to you know, get a signature win. How
does witing help? That one in cures everything. That's what
(32:02):
especially in a town like this. Yeah, if you're not winning,
we got issues. But when you're winning, everybody wants to
be a part. That's why the basketball the consistency of
the basketball team, they sell out all the time because
it's consistent.
Speaker 3 (32:16):
Ours is so up and down. They don't.
Speaker 4 (32:18):
And you got to deal with the elements too. So
in order to have me deal with the elements, you
got to be a winner. David's not as sexy as
he used to be, so well, I disagree with that, but.
Speaker 3 (32:30):
I think, like I said, the chemistry is good. My
sexiness is hidden more now than it was back then. Well,
we'll go on the Easter egg hunt.
Speaker 2 (32:40):
On the other side, welcome to Brad Anderson, a super
Bowl champion. We'll talk to him as well. This is

Don't get hurt Ricky after I said that.
Speaker 4 (37:18):
Well, we went to Super Bowl twice, we just didn't
win Super Bowl Champion.
Speaker 3 (37:23):
Brad David didn't go at all. I did watch him
on TV.
Speaker 2 (37:29):
There's always someone want to holiday Express. Good to have
you here, Thank you. How did they convince you to
show up here? Because no, no, no, this is a
little shaky with Ricky. Well, I just do what Ricky
tells me. That's what Because you know why everybody loves Ricky.
Speaker 3 (37:45):
Everybody loves Ricky. Good to have you. You're here to
watch the game, obviously. Yes.
Speaker 2 (37:50):
One of the things the guys have said numerous times
on the show they love seeing their ex teammates here
because it's a family it is. Yeah, tell me how
does it feel, especially with these guys.
Speaker 18 (38:01):
It's old home week, right. I mean, I wish I
could come down to Tucson more often.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
I can't.
Speaker 18 (38:06):
I'm just too tied up in various things in Phoenix
and around the country. But I try to make it
back once a year at least. I watched the games
as much as I can, but nothing ever changes. It
feels like we're in the locker room in the late seventies,
early eighties right now.
Speaker 4 (38:25):
Yeah, I tell you what, I'll always have great memories
of Brad Anderson. We played Arizona State, they had already
won the conference, and they're going to the roles.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
Give me the year. I think it was eighty two,
eighty two.
Speaker 4 (38:41):
It was nineteen eighty two, and they're bringing the full
tilt blitz. Everybody's coming and Brad Anderson gets the pop
pass over the middle and shake one guy and.
Speaker 3 (38:52):
It's touchdown, it's over. That was a fun moment.
Speaker 18 (38:56):
Yeah, that was just an incredible game for our team, Tucson,
the Wildcat family.
Speaker 3 (39:02):
That was that was really special. What were you you?
Speaker 4 (39:05):
There's one thing that these modest guys forgot to mention.
There was a write up in the paper that said
no white guy could ever beat me deep something like that.
This is there was on a state saying that this was.
I'm like, oh, so, I look at Brad. I say,
I'm not even playing so and next thing you know,
(39:27):
it was ninety yards in his face and he's chasing
him and I can see Brad looking at him like, Okay,
well this is the first white guy to do it.
Speaker 3 (39:36):
I remember that that that in the newspapers.
Speaker 18 (39:38):
Well, we had two white receivers, Jade Dobbins and myself. Yeah,
we caught a lot of that. Uh when we had
gritty guys. You guys were the lunch pail guys. Yeah,
it's just tough to it was a blue I mean,
look at David. Yeah, yeah, a blue collar team.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (39:54):
Maybe you're five to four and I'm the man, I'm
a good dad.
Speaker 4 (40:00):
See See, this is what people don't understand when you're
not the prototype, and you're the man, You're the double man.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
This is what people don't understanding. They should just named David.
Speaker 4 (40:12):
The ghost because you can't see him because all the
big linemen you don't see you see me.
Speaker 3 (40:17):
When I crossed that last line, though, don't you That's
what they see. This must have been the way the
locker room was back in the day, every day, all
day sometimes.
Speaker 4 (40:28):
But I'm going to tell you something that that's extremely personal.
It was like this every day and we haven't played
with each other for thirty forty years, whatever it is.
But when I had my stroke, one of the first
people to call me was Ricky Henley. He sent me, uh,
motivational things on my phone every day. And this is
(40:49):
what football does to you. It makes you love each
other and we can talk about each other, but you
better not.
Speaker 3 (40:57):
You have no question.
Speaker 2 (40:59):
The chemistry, the camaraderie that becomes the family, and it's it's.
Speaker 3 (41:03):
The greatest feeling ever.
Speaker 4 (41:05):
When I haven't seen Brad since school and when he
came in and I I said, wait a minute, let's
run that back a little bit.
Speaker 3 (41:13):
That's Brad.
Speaker 4 (41:14):
Yeah, he really does, and it's just a wonderful thing.
He is sexy David. Well, he's here already, Ricky. Ricky's
always been a hater, so I expect him to say
things like that because of the jealousy that's he's had
towards me for forty years.
Speaker 2 (41:31):
Did you make it a point to come to this
game specifically or what's the reason for coming back now?
Speaker 18 (41:37):
I honestly, Ricky called and asked me if I could
spend some time with them, and just worked out well
for me. And my good bell from college, Kerry Kirstin's
here with me, and like I said, you know, it's
usually last minute for me. When I talked to Ricky yesterday,
I was in Dallas and said, day I'm gonna try
to make it down.
Speaker 3 (41:56):
So I'm here. It's ironic, it's by.
Speaker 2 (41:58):
You, and that's where I wanted to kind of go
with it. Can you give us a short history of
the connection.
Speaker 18 (42:02):
Well, you know, back when I was a high school
senior during the recruiting phase, I you know, BUYU won
the national championship the year before I signed up with them,
and I just thought it would be a great, great
school to play as a receiver. And so long story short,
I mean, it was just a series of critical errors
on my part. I show up training camp. I thought
(42:26):
I was doing pretty well for the first month, and
class starts in the week before the first game. All
of the freshmen are huddled up in a room with
about fifty players that I thought, you know, wouldn't make
our high school team honestly. I mean they had probably
one hundred and twenty five players on this team, and
the coach levelle Everards, told us, you know, we're going
(42:47):
to red shirt all the freshmen and we're going to
create this you know, I didn't know anything about it,
but a JV team effectively, and.
Speaker 3 (42:57):
That just didn't set well with me. I didn't like it.
Speaker 18 (42:59):
They didn't tell me about it up until that point.
It was really discouraging for me personally.
Speaker 11 (43:06):
And so.
Speaker 18 (43:09):
You know, the next day I called Tom Rogman and
I you know, because U of A was the place
that I was interested in as well, and I just said, Tom,
told him my story, and he said, well, get on
get on a plane and get down here and we'll
make it happen for you.
Speaker 3 (43:24):
Great choice.
Speaker 18 (43:25):
Well, it was a great choice, and in so many
ways other than just football. I mean, we're talking about
our relationships and how how how strong. They are Tucsons
just an incredible community. I got a good education while
I was here, but most importantly with the relationships I
made prior to and after after football. I met my
wife down here freshman year and took me a couple
(43:46):
of years to convince her to hang out with me.
But we got married after college and she's just, you know,
everything to me and made me so much better and
everything I do. And then my friends, I mean, the
guys in the locker room, just incredible people on the
coaching staff, and the fans in Tucson, they're just incredible.
(44:07):
Like David had mentioned, you got to win. Sometimes sometimes
they get after you if you're not winning. But we
were a pretty good ball club, and I think we
actually were the highest rated Arizona team of all time.
Now we didn't finish that, you know. I think we
got to number three in the country. Yes, and we
didn't finish strong. We had a couple mess ups, but
(44:28):
didn't finish that way. But it didn't make us a
worse team. We're still a really strong team and just
a lot of strong talent on that football team.
Speaker 2 (44:37):
Well, we talked about this earlier. You guys showed up
for big games, the big games. I mean, sometimes you
wouldn't show up.
Speaker 3 (44:43):
With the little game.
Speaker 2 (44:43):
And that's kind of the history of Arizona football. But
like a game today. To Arizona, this is a big game.
Speaker 3 (44:48):
It's a big game.
Speaker 18 (44:49):
It's a huge game. You know, we got the seasons
really in front of us, right the way I see it.
I mean, the first you know, five games are behind us.
Lost a tough one of State, but uh, this is
a momentum shift we went today and some good things
can happen. We don't and who knows what can happen.
And uh, it's a little reminiscent of where we were,
(45:11):
you know we were we were four or five and
oh and just out of I got actually hurt my
senior year. I was out for three three games. But
you know, I just remember those big games were really
big and uh, you know we could, we could hit
people hard, and I just I just remember that.
Speaker 2 (45:28):
So I introduced you as the you know, Super Bowl champion.
How did he when he saw him play? What'd you think?
You know, we saw you, we saw Dobbins, all those
tough guys. But when he played, what did you think
we saw Dobbins? And we knew he couldn't run. This
dude could fly. I mean he could run. I mean
Brad could catch it. He had great catch radius.
Speaker 4 (45:49):
And uh you know, Tom had some sure handed receivers
that made him look really really good because I mean
our offense, man, give me, we had balance. You know,
Larry was all about give me the wide receiver group.
Well it was pretty deep.
Speaker 18 (46:04):
Actually, Jay Dobbins and I are our senior year were
the starters. But uh, you know, we had John Horton
back then, Kevin Ward, mark Heel, Martin Markiel was tied
in and we were just really strong. And but again
we had a lot of support. I'm sure you've heard
that with other people that come in. Some really talented
football players with little beaty running back just show up
(46:27):
and it's a touchdown. Yeah, he should do a little
skip like he thought he was Walter Payton, but he wasn't.
You know what, who are you talking about?
Speaker 3 (46:34):
I joke it. Of course we're talking about the guy
that was All Conference twice. That's the one we're talking about.
Speaker 4 (46:41):
He was All Conference and he led the back to
the rushing I think let me let me call him
and find out.
Speaker 3 (46:47):
That's the one he's talking about yes, yes, yes, yes,
So how did you become who you became? Because? Uh,
did you got here? This place was great to you?
And then how did this happen?
Speaker 18 (46:59):
Just a lot of hard work. I mean I had to,
you know, sit down and watch a lot of great
football happen. And I just kept after it. I mean
I spent a lot of time in the gym and
kept on work in my craft, and and it was
hopeful at some point I'd be able to participate and
make make a contribution. And it finally happened, and uh,
(47:20):
you know, I got a chance to play my sophomore year,
and you know it, Uh, it was just a really
good run. And I would like to kind of point out,
you know, Tom Tunnacliffe. I think he was a guest
of yours a few weeks ago. Tom was just a
really good quarterback and a better person. And he reminded
me a lot the way he played, like Jim McMahon
in Chicago. Just a great football mind. He you know,
(47:42):
he didn't run real well, so he could stand back
there in the pocket a little longer than most before
they'd start running. He could read defenses and you know,
I told him this a couple of years ago, and
I saw him at one of these alumni events. You
you made me a lot better than I actually was,
and he was, Yeah. He just kind of returned the
favor right away. Thinks you know, I think, he said,
(48:03):
I think you got that backwards.
Speaker 3 (48:04):
I said, no, I don't.
Speaker 2 (48:05):
You know.
Speaker 3 (48:05):
He really made that offense work.
Speaker 4 (48:07):
I told David that too, because he chase this little
butt all over the field what he actually was because
he was scared most.
Speaker 3 (48:15):
Of the time. He was stop it. Let me explain
to you what really happened.
Speaker 4 (48:21):
Ricky became an outstanding All American because he had to
try to tackle, in which he did most of the time,
because he didn't have the skills that I had.
Speaker 3 (48:32):
Five hundred and sixty six tackles, twenty five hundred yards,
three time All Conference.
Speaker 4 (48:40):
This could go time America, This could go back and
the first and the highest draft pick ever in the
history of school. No, I wasn't afraid. I was drafted
by Indianapolis number one, number two. We had a plethora
of good linebackers but only one great running back. Yeah,
but you don't have a Super Bowl championship ring Leg
(49:01):
Brad And Yeah, well, let me say that you want
to try this on David.
Speaker 3 (49:06):
Don't get me wrong. If I had that, I wouldn't
take it off or anything. Hey. See, what he doesn't
understand is I'm still faster than all of them. And
I'll take this.
Speaker 12 (49:15):
I'll take this.
Speaker 3 (49:17):
I'll tell you what. Listen, I will run my ass
off and you will never find me. You wear that everywhere? No,
I don't. I rarely wear it, but I was gonna
ask you. I hope that is because that's impressive. Yeah,
thank you? Well, you know the ones today are three times? Oh,
I'm sure.
Speaker 2 (49:35):
I'm sure you have the stat somewhere special back at home.
Speaker 18 (49:38):
Not really, but you know I like to share it
to people. Yes, well, yours is bigger. Well let me
just Brad, where do you live again in Phoenix?
Speaker 3 (49:51):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (49:52):
Leave me the address since you just put those out
of the counter, and I'll make come by and visage.
Speaker 3 (49:58):
And what do you do?
Speaker 14 (49:59):
Know?
Speaker 18 (49:59):
What I for the Oh, I'm primarily in commercial real estate, okay,
but I kind of in different sectors in banking and
home building.
Speaker 3 (50:08):
I may have asked you this question just differently. How
did it was?
Speaker 2 (50:10):
Want to set you up for all that success professionally?
As well, not just football but life.
Speaker 4 (50:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 18 (50:16):
So I mean, I'm very grateful and feel blessed that
the education I got at U of A put me
in a good sound position to really win in business.
Speaker 3 (50:26):
And so again, I wasn't a great student.
Speaker 18 (50:29):
I went to class every day hoping that you know,
I begged the teacher to pass me if I showed
up every day. But you know, truly, I just I
thought initially when I was a freshman in school, i'd
take maybe a different path, maybe pursue medicine. But you know,
once I took a biology or a class and realized
(50:50):
I medicine probably wasn't for me, I got into business
school and studied accounting.
Speaker 2 (50:55):
Yeah, it's funny in my history here, I got here
in eighty seven. But in going back and reviewing things,
everyone talks about the desert's warm.
Speaker 12 (51:03):
Right.
Speaker 2 (51:03):
But this group that you had in the early eighties,
just a bunch of good, gritty dudes.
Speaker 3 (51:10):
Agree with me? Well, I agree with you.
Speaker 18 (51:12):
I think football has changed, and I'd be curious, Ricky,
but what you think. But you know the rules have changed.
And when we played it was a violent, violent sport
and today, and I get it, we're trying to protect
certain players, and I don't know how you tackle somebody,
you know, without getting a penalty anymore. But and plus
(51:34):
you know it, we were full pads all week and
went hard all week on offense and defense. And again
I credit that atmosphere for making us all better because
we were going at each other every day.
Speaker 3 (51:48):
They don't do that anymore. In Chicago.
Speaker 18 (51:49):
We'd practice Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and just got after each other,
you know. We The weirdest thing for me in Chicago was,
you know, did Cup was the offensive guy and Buddy
Ryan was the defense and they hated each other. Yeah,
I've never seen anything like it. And it worked for
a couple of years, but ultimately it didn't work. And
(52:12):
I thought that team could really be sustainable and win
a lot of championships. It just didn't. I'm not playing
the coaching staff for that. But you know, off the field,
the defense and the offense got along real well. I
just got back from a forty year reunion in Chicago
and it's just just same thing like here. It's all
home week. You know, there's only forty four players on
the team back then.
Speaker 3 (52:31):
In the NFL.
Speaker 18 (52:32):
Now they carry what fifty three plus a ten or
fifteen man a roster. So you know we were sore
after after Sundays we got one minute left. You come
back to this place, it's totally different. The facilities, the campus.
Speaker 3 (52:45):
What do you think. I think it's beautiful again.
Speaker 18 (52:48):
I've just always been a huge fan of Tucson.
Speaker 3 (52:51):
The people.
Speaker 18 (52:52):
The school is beautiful and they they've got a lot
of beautiful people kind of walking around the campus.
Speaker 3 (52:58):
That makes it kind of nice as well.
Speaker 2 (53:01):
The good like the good old days, the good old
days when you guys were younger. Well, great to have you,
Great to have you. What success story you are? Like
Ricky and David here, we'll see what happens today, right,
just gotta gotta be go back to being gritty again.
Speaker 4 (53:14):
Well, I think the guys are ready to meet the challenge.
It'll be a gritty affair today.
Speaker 2 (53:19):
Yeah, yeah, okay, thanks guys, Thanks Brad for showing up here.
Speaker 4 (53:23):
Ye, Rick, David, You're welcome. You guys can tam I'm
always I'm always glad to come to with you. And
then Ricky, we have a blast together, and it's a
people need to understand it. There's nothing like sports bringing
you together because when somebody passes away or something you
feel it. It's always a family affair because we've all
(53:45):
been through the same thing, the operations, the soreness of
this and that, and it's just a beautiful thing. When
you see each other again, it's like, oh my god,
you're still alive.
Speaker 3 (53:56):
Here you go. Thanks guys,
