Speaker 1 (00:02):
Legendary takes, Wildcat greats Ricky Hunley and Lamont Hunley with
Steve Rivera all things Arizona football. This is the Hunley Huddle,
power by Nova Home Loans.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Alrighty, Welcome in, everybody. This is the Hunley Huddle with
Steve Rivera. Steve's not here, though, so we are gonna
just be running it. My name is Ray Chavez here
with you know, Ricky and Lamont. How we doing, fellas.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
It's a great day today. You know.
Speaker 4 (00:35):
Steve's out there just gallivant and around on bicycles and
tricycles at the El Toro Dick Tucson Race in their
forty second year.
Speaker 5 (00:45):
Steve, Steve has really been you know, locked into this
l too for a lot of years. So I gotta
give him his due. I think I saw some police
officers this morning driving in here.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
So maybe Steve's one of those cross cards and the
police officer there to protect everybody else Steve might run
into somebody with his tricycle.
Speaker 6 (01:05):
All right, let's do this thing without Steve. Ray, Here
we go, you think, bro.
Speaker 3 (01:08):
Here we go.
Speaker 2 (01:08):
I mean coming into a big game, you know what
I mean? On a three game winning streak, how you
guys feeling about the season so far.
Speaker 4 (01:15):
Well, you know, we're sitting here seven and three. We
got a lock for a bowl game. It's a huge
game against Baylor this week. I mean, it's one of
those games where I mean you can't you know, fall asleep,
you know, because they have some talent. You know, they
have some talented receivers, they got a very very talented
(01:35):
tight end. And if you take those guys for granted,
I mean, they can do some damage. And they did
some good things against good teams. But you know, our
defense is playing well. I think we match up well
a quarterback. It's you know, as good as it gets,
you know. So I'm feeling really good about this game,
(01:56):
and this would be great momentum for us going into the.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Rest of the season.
Speaker 7 (02:00):
You know.
Speaker 5 (02:00):
The other day I was reflecting on this team, and
my reflection was kind of similar to uh two years
ago when the team got to the end of the season,
you know, and and and the momentum that they required
and and and gain, I should say, particularly going into
that bowl game down in San Antonio, and the defense
(02:22):
was firing on all cylinders, and and I can see
our defense and our team with that type of personality
now similar to that football team that we saw here
two years ago. So that's a wonderful thing. Firing at
this point in the time of the year. Two games left
put us in a good situation to maybe a much
(02:43):
decent BOWLD game than where we're at right now. That's
exciting for the players, exciting for the community. So let's
get two more.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
And you know, not to look too far back or
you know, try to try to live in that moment.
But what did you guys see against Cincinnati that you
think is going to transition, well, like to to Baylor.
Speaker 4 (03:00):
I sure hope that the turnovers continue because that's been
the key to our success on defense.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
We had two key stops last week.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
With turnovers and a fourth down stop, so that really
is like three turnovers, and anytime you get three turnovers
in a game, you should win the game. And coach
Gonzales had predicted that in a staff meeting, like, hey,
we get three turnovers, we're gonna win the ball game,
and he did. And so turnovers are the key. But
it comes down to the players, their effort and how
they run.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
To the football.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
That's when you make things happen, you know, things just
don't happen by watching the game. You got to be active,
you got to play the game. You got to be physical,
and and they do it together and they have fun together.
So it's been really exciting to watch all year.
Speaker 5 (03:40):
And offensively, you know, again on the offensive side of
the game, the way we came out against Cincinnati and
we came out with with with authority. You know, we
came out with a sense of purpose in regards to
we're gonna dominate this game. We're gonna control this game.
I think both fens passing the ball and running the
ball create that bolence right there. It allowed Norah to
(04:02):
be able to sit back and be more comfortable and
do his day.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
And he did. He had a great game against Cincinnati.
Speaker 5 (04:08):
And I think again, if we can take that same
attitude into this particular game, the outcomes should.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Be the same.
Speaker 4 (04:16):
I mean, I love the ninety nine yard drive was key.
I mean, they moved the ball down ninety nine yards.
I think the last time they did that was in
twenty nineteen. It was at a key moment and in
that sole possession, you know, that sealed noise record of
sixty eight career touchdown passes.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
It was great.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Yeah, and it really felt like, you know, the Wildcats
kind of snatched momentum from Cincinnati.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
Maybe trying to swing it their way.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Obviously, another big storyline going into this game is you know,
being senior Day and you know the meaning for that.
Speaker 3 (04:50):
What was your guys' senior day?
Speaker 4 (04:51):
Like, it's always an exciting time senior day because you know,
it's the last time you get to run out on
the field if you guys, you got your parents there
watching and uh, you know, waiting for you with flowers
to congratulate you on you know, on finishing up. And
you know that most cases, parents want you to finish
(05:11):
with a degree, but to have a great career at
the university playing football and doing something that you love
and doing it with the guys that you love, it's
a great moment and uh, you know, and we talked
to coach Brannan a little bit about what he thought
about all the seniors and we were here that a
little later.
Speaker 3 (05:26):
But it's an exciting time for them.
Speaker 4 (05:28):
And it seemed to play a little different on senior
Day because it's kind of like a dedication game. You're
you're dedicating this game to my parents or or or
to my grandparents or whoever, and they just playing with
a little more of a chip on the shoulder more.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Yeah. I also see it as a kind of like
a statement game.
Speaker 5 (05:49):
You know, you're trying to put your last stamp of
approval for yourself as well as the fans. You know,
that's that's here watching you. You know, so you want
to do as much as you can to create this
statement that lasts or off for yourself and let people
know that you know you you know you love being
a wildcat and you appreciate being a wildcat. It's an
emotional game. It's a very emotional game because some of
(06:11):
these kids won't play a cat. You know, someone won't
be playing again, you know, just be that last time
wearing a uniform and running out on that field and
and having having those cheers, you know on impacts on
the back and and that family environment may not be there.
You know, a lot of that stuff is going to
be lost and gone. You know, so the following few weeks,
you know what, what do these kids got looking forward to?
(06:33):
So I'm sure they're going to do everything they can
to leave that lasting impact right there on that field
for themselves.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
So be exciting and you know, Ricky, you mentioned Noah's
Noah breaking the career passing touchdown record here at the university.
What do you think you would feel like if you
had your your record broken?
Speaker 3 (06:52):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (06:53):
I look forward to pass at never gonna get You
know that means that I'm still alive if you see it.
But your record't never gonna get broken. It can't happen.
Speaker 6 (07:05):
There's too much transitional stuff for Ricky's record to be broken.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Well, you know, there's a lot of guys that have
that ability.
Speaker 4 (07:12):
But you know kids now, you know, they chase the
money and they don't stay put.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
For four years.
Speaker 4 (07:17):
And you know, now my record may get broken, it's
still there. But I don't think that'll be hard to
break too.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
I mean.
Speaker 6 (07:25):
The all time no I didn't have four hundred. I
got unassisted, but it wasn't four hundred. I have four
hundred total tackles. The official name for him is called power.
Somebody make the plane, you jump on the pile, give.
Speaker 4 (07:38):
You credit, but uh man I I would love to
just you know, welcome the guy to whoever can break
that record. Just like you know, uh Woollie T and
U Nick both they're they're excited for no they're really
excited for him.
Speaker 5 (07:57):
Well, you know, the records I've made to be broken.
So and that's a beautiful thing. And like Ricky said,
I mean, if you can be in that moment to
watch that happen, you know, I think it'll be a
lasting embrace for the person who broke the record and
the person who used to hold that record. So and
we're gonna well, now we won't see that today because hey,
Noah got a few more thousand yards to throw it
(08:19):
in order to catch Nick.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
On the next one. We had another first this week.
Who is that? Okay?
Speaker 4 (08:25):
We had a grandpa for the first time, you know,
in studio. And to celebrate this joice occasion as another
Hunley in the family.
Speaker 5 (08:36):
Oh man, ys just keep girling huh yeah, yeah with
my wife and myself. Who's blessed with a grand baby
this week? Last Friday. It was last Friday by four
sixteen Devin Powell. She was brought to us by my daughter. No,
I said, Devin. Her name is Evan Powell. I'm sorry,
(08:57):
Devin is my daughter. My granddaughter. Name is Evan, and
Devin and and Taylor. They graced us with this beautiful daughter. Man,
this beautiful child, and man, she is so precious. You know,
people always say, wait till you become a grandfather. It's
a whole different world. And I'm like, what's the difference.
And the crazy thing as soon as you see that
(09:18):
baby for the first time, I mean, she's giving you
so much. Can't he said one word, not one word,
But you give so much and you can feel the
spirit and energy inside of her. I mean, I got
visions in her in my head. I keep playing it
and can't wait to hold her again next week. So
but yeah, thank you, Ricky. That's that's a blessing.
Speaker 6 (09:36):
And the crazy thing she got so many uncles, So
poor baby.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
She got a lot of uncles gonna look out for her.
Poor baby.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
Yes, she ain't gonna be able to get anything done
around town.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
It's no different than its daughter Devin, her husband Taylor.
You know, you know, Taylor's a football coach at Mexico State,
and uh, you know, so you know, we keep it
in the family.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
But I told Taylor, everything you do to her, I'm
gonna do to you. Yeah, so he would be nice
to her. Yeah, yeah, Well let me offer my congratulations.
And it is awesome, man, it's awesome.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
So and so I think you know another another factor
about this game, right you look, you look ahead to
next week. How do you focus on this game knowing
that you know, you got to go up to that
team up north of the week after Brennan.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
Brennan is the one who keep him in perspective because
he says game by game, day by day, you know,
And he keeps them in perspective, and he keeps us
in perspective as far as the.
Speaker 3 (10:28):
Audience and the fans, you know.
Speaker 5 (10:30):
So I don't think they're looking to anything but Baylor
at this point in time, you know. And and and
of course the issue game is always going to be,
you know, right there, target on your schedule. It doesn't matter.
It always gonna be targeted on your schedule. But you
play week by week. And I think they're in a
good mindset to focus on Baylor only, you know.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
And the real test is every week when I go
out and I watch practice, and or does he does
a great job of keeping those guys focused because you know,
it's single focused, single purpose for them all week. They're
only focused on the opponent at hand. I can see
(11:13):
it in the energy. You can see the way they
run around, they're excited about it. They're not thinking past anything,
and and you know, you can't take anything for granted.
I mean, because here again, we're sitting here and we're
looking back and we're doing the what if saying, what
if we are to just played one more play to
our best of our ability in the BYU game. Of
(11:34):
what if we have played one more series in the
Houston game to the best of our ability.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
And now we're talking about.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
Our team that's sitting here at nine and one, we're
two games to go, and so you know, kudos to
coach for doing a great job of keeping those guys focused,
I mean, and that's what it takes, you know, single focused,
single purpose, to get the job done week by week.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, great stuff.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
We are going to take a little bit of an
early break so we can get through all the interviews
and then we're going to get to our special guests,

Speaker 3 (18:05):
Coach don't forget Arizona Health and Arizona Health.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
You're right, I'm sorry, And now we are going to
listen to coach Gonzales on Baylor's offense.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
Coach Danny Gonzalez.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
Danny great week last week, but we got to put
that behind us and move forward.
Speaker 3 (18:24):
Tell me about these Baylor Bayers. This could be a
dangerous team.
Speaker 17 (18:27):
They are there the fifteen best offense in the country.
Sawyer Robertson is efficient, smart. We're not gonna have I mean,
he's not one that wants to get out and run.
He wants to sit back there and find open receivers.
And they've got to plutthrow of receivers that are dangerous.
I mean, whether it's wide receivers, tight ends, it doesn't matter.
They all are athletic, they all can get open. They
(18:49):
just got done putting up five hundred and sixty seven
yards on Utah, who's good on defense.
Speaker 3 (18:52):
So we have a huge challenge. We've got to get
him off the spot.
Speaker 17 (18:56):
We got to give him different pictures and we got
to continue our trend of taking the football way.
Speaker 4 (19:00):
What do you think will be the key to continue
this trend of getting turnovers?
Speaker 3 (19:06):
I mean the turnovers so far is because we have
good players.
Speaker 17 (19:09):
I mean those guys are doing a great job making
plays and they're playing hard. A lot of those turnovers
are coming from the second and third guy in when
we cause fumbles. Now we are fourth in the country
and interceptions. That means we have really good guys in
the secondary. But you have to give a lot of
credit to the guys up front because they're making the
quarterback throw the ball when he's not ready, and the
guys in the back end are making the plays. We're
getting enough pressure. Now, we're not getting a bunch of sacks.
(19:31):
But I'll take an interception over sack any day of
the week.
Speaker 4 (19:35):
Now Baylor has some weapons in the run game, do
we consider that a challenge this week?
Speaker 3 (19:41):
And stop in the run? Unfortunately, would be one dimensional.
I absolutely.
Speaker 17 (19:46):
They've rushed for over two hundred ards several times this season,
and they try and keep you honest by it.
Speaker 3 (19:51):
So if you want to just blitz.
Speaker 17 (19:52):
The tar out of them, they'll they'll screen and draw you,
and they're very efficient with it. I think their tackles
do an outstanding job both in the run game and
the pass game. And then trigg the tight end number one,
he is a freak athlete. He's not a violent physical blocker,
but he does a great job of body blocking and
getting in the way and then out on the perimeter.
Speaker 3 (20:11):
He's a freak. So you don't have you don't.
Speaker 17 (20:13):
Get big keys when he's lined up inside because they
will run the ball with them in there, and they'll
throw with him in there. But their running backs are dangerous.
It's a big challenge. They've ran the ball. They ran
the ball for almost twenty yards on Utah in that
five hundred and sixty seven yards of total offensive.
Speaker 4 (20:27):
Hand Well, thank you coach Gonzales. Some of the keys
to the game.
Speaker 3 (20:31):
On defense, bear down, barndown, go Cats.
Speaker 2 (20:35):
Great stuff by you, Ricky Budding journalists, I see.
Speaker 4 (20:39):
You know the thing is in talking to coaches out Gonzales,
Michael Trigg Man he's a talent. I mean, the dude
has forty three receptions. You got six hundred forty nine
yards and six touchdowns so far on the year. And
when he played against Kansas State, the dude had eight
of those catches in one hundred and fifty five yards
against a pretty good pass defense team. And so he's
(21:02):
gonna be a guy at our safety's Dalton and uh
Stukes and Genese is gonna have to do a great
job and we expect him to and and they they
they embrace a great challenge and they you know, they'll
do well. That big receiver he talked about also, uh
Josh Cameron as another kid. He's got six receptions in
(21:23):
seven hundred and forty six yards and seven touchdowns on
the year. And in that game against Utah, that's a
strong pass defensive team, he had thirteen catches one hundred
and sixty five yards. So we got a hands full
and you know it's gonna be a challenge and we're
gonna have to respond on the all fronts against the run,
(21:44):
defend the pass, be great and special teams, you know,
win third downs, get off the field. It's gonna have
to be a perfect game. Like when we win, we
played great. You know, we played great across the board.
So that's what we expect, you know, and.
Speaker 5 (21:58):
That as he as coach gazal Us said, you know,
I think our defensive front gotta put some pressure on
this quarterback. I mean, they gotta come out there, hunters.
They gotta be disciplined again, you know, keep them in
the pocket. But they gotta gotta get some pressure on
this kid. You can't allow his kids to sit back
there and throw the ball along. I mean, he wants
to throw the ball along. He wants to get the
(22:18):
ball down the field. But now you look at the
matchup there as far as their receivers versus our talented
defensive backs. You know, I think you're gonna have the
best on the best this afternoon in that capacity.
Speaker 3 (22:33):
So I look forward to seeing Dalton.
Speaker 5 (22:35):
I look forward to seeing stoops those guys, you know,
hopefully shut down that passing attack, create more turnovers, because
that's going to be the outcome of this situation is
forced Billy to get sit on the sideline. Their offense
be on the sideline as well as our defense and
let our offense do their thing.
Speaker 4 (22:54):
We got to eliminate their explosive place. We can take
their explosive place, their key players. You know, we talked
about those receivers. We take the explosive plays away, and
you know we'll be cooking with guests.
Speaker 2 (23:06):
Yeah, definitely going to be a key matchup, looking looking
forward to this passing attack against this passing defense that
the Wildcats have been able to put together this year. Now,
we are going to listen to Coach Brennan talk about
the seniors and what they kind of mean to him
into this program here with Coach Brennan.
Speaker 4 (23:24):
Coach Brennan, great win man. I can't say enough about
Noah Fafiita. How fortunate are we to have a guy
like that being our leader? I think we're so lucky.
You know, Noah's a tremendous young man.
Speaker 12 (23:40):
He's an incredible hard worker, he's a great leader for
our team, and he's one of those players that you know,
at least since I've been here, every offseason, somebody tries
to lure him away from Tucson Arizona, but he keeps
choosing the year at University of Arizona. He keeps choosing
our football program, and he keeps choosing Tucson. And he's
really special, special guy. Now, not to kind of put
(24:03):
the Carpenter Port a horse, but we're sitting here with
seven wins with two games ago, and you're gonna send
his senior class out. I mean, just feeling great about
themselves and okay, can you just give me one or
two words just to describe each one of those guys
as are going out to do.
Speaker 3 (24:21):
Is Senior Day.
Speaker 12 (24:22):
Yeah, absolutely, Senior Day is a really special time for
those guys. And when you think about the guys that
were honoring on Senior Day, you know, all of them
either chose to stay or they chose to come. And
that's because they believe in the University Arizona. They believe
in our program, and they're just awesome, awesome young men.
So you know, Chris Hudson, playmaker, great addition from the
portal last year, is really catching his stride late in
(24:44):
the season here new New Watley, you know, awesome, big smile,
he's a good father. He's just got a great way
about him. He's one of those guys that also joined
us in the portal that we love. Luke Wisong is
another guy. Receiver, pun returner, playmaker, great leader, he's part
of the leadership council. He's just been a great addition
to our program. Type Buchanan, you know, Ty is a
(25:06):
player that's been, you know, all season just finding a
way to compete.
Speaker 9 (25:09):
Plays left tackle for us as tough as.
Speaker 12 (25:12):
They come, really really important part of us and it's
just awesome to see him playing his best football his
last year of college.
Speaker 9 (25:18):
Chubama I. You know, Chuwbo is a guy that we converted.
Speaker 12 (25:21):
You know, he was a defensive lineman last season and
we moved him to the offensive lineman and he's been
playing great football for us. Been a big part of
our offensive line success. Is fall to Cambra kd As.
Everybody knows him, a transfer from Hawaii. You know, just
talk about work ethic and really development, being to a
big time center. I think he's going to be an
(25:42):
NFL prospect. He's just a great, great guy. He say,
you know, what a great kid he's. You know, he
played his role as primarily as a backup, but just
a great part of our team.
Speaker 9 (25:51):
He's a great culture guy. He's a hard worker. Everyone
loves him.
Speaker 12 (25:55):
Tristan Bounds and other portal players from the University of Michigan,
you knowed every game, almost every game for us this
year at right tackle and just got better and better
as the season went on.
Speaker 9 (26:05):
And we're really grateful for him choosing to come here.
Speaker 12 (26:08):
Sam Olson and Cam Barmore, I'll talk about them both
at the same time. You know, I've known Sam for
a long time. Sam Olsen played for US at San
Jose State and shows the transfer.
Speaker 9 (26:16):
Here when we came to Arizona.
Speaker 12 (26:20):
Hard worker, tough, has made all kinds of plays over
his career. He's done a lot of really really good stuff.
And then Cam is the guy that transferred in and
is doing a great job. You know, So you've just
seen his development over the year, just gets so much better,
just making plays, catching the football, really really exciting. Malachi
(26:40):
Bailey another transfer coming in but just playing defensive line
and really really has done a great job this fall,
just making plays. Tough has really developed over the offseason.
Tia Savellah and Tia is one of those guys. You know,
he left right when I got hired here and so
I didn't know him until he came back last January.
He left came back here from the University of Texas.
(27:02):
He has been a big time factor in the d
line all season. Tough, physical, great, great player, great person.
Deshaun mcnight is another guy that is you know, was
a portal player, has a great relationship Coach Salavea has
been playing big time football. He's you know, he's leading
our teams and tackles for loss. Riley Wilson another transfer
you know, came to his University of Montana, linebacker, playmaker,
(27:24):
tough as they come, great person. Max Harris another guy,
part of the leadership group, just an active, active football player, tough,
makes every tackle, you know, plays hurt, just loves it
that much. Been a great addition here. Michael Dansby is
a great kid. He came here from San Jase State,
(27:44):
where we coached him and recruited him too, and I
mean talk about playing good football. He played his tail
off last weekend at Cincinnati, So I'm really gonna miss
him because he's been a great addition.
Speaker 9 (27:55):
Dalton Johnson and Trading Stukes, you.
Speaker 12 (27:58):
Know, talk about two guys that just are the absolute
definition of what it means to be a Wildcat. Tough,
hard working, love this place, play physical football, make plays,
love the team leaders.
Speaker 9 (28:12):
Just those two guys are.
Speaker 12 (28:13):
Just absolutely two of the best young men I've ever
been around on a football team. And then Aiden Gardns
is another transfer who started every game for US at corner,
made plays, just continues to contribute, continues to make the
most of his opportunity here in our program. So that's
a really awesome group of seniors. We're gonna love him
where we really love them, and we're gonna miss them.
Speaker 4 (28:32):
We get calls and texts all the time, and I
just want to let you know that we have so
many people call and said, we're so glad that Brent Brennan.
Speaker 3 (28:41):
Is our football coach. Okay, and just like our seniors,
we're happy for our seniors.
Speaker 4 (28:48):
And making the commitment to come here and be here
a part of a Wildcamp family. We're just as happy
to have you come back to Arizona and be our
head football coach. Let's get after Baylort's bear it down
and win number eight.
Speaker 3 (29:00):
A let's go awesome stuff right there. I mean, just
shouting out every senior.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
It really really exemplifies how much, you know, Brendan takes
his players to heart and stuff like that.
Speaker 4 (29:12):
That guy, he truly truly loves and cares about his players.
I mean he said every step of the way, and
and and those guys you all mentioned, man, they're gonna
be missed.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
They're gonna be greatly missing.
Speaker 4 (29:23):
That's a that's a great senior class, a selfless group
of individuals that have you know, taking the ball by
the horn and say hey, man, let's you know, nobody's
gonna give us a chance.
Speaker 3 (29:34):
That's show him what we can do.
Speaker 5 (29:36):
Yeah, and you can see that again even with coach
Jalah said, I mean players make the team, you know,
And and I compliment both of those coaches, you know
how much they they give that respect to to the players,
because the players is what's making this thing happen. It's
not the coaching staff, it's the players themselves. And Ricky said, man,
(29:57):
we got some key kids that's gonna be leaving. And
so the day is gonna be a very emotional high
day with those those seniors going and uh and you know,
so there's gonna be some holes to feel, but you know,
let's turn it up to say for their last game.
Speaker 3 (30:11):
The energy is going to be flowing. Man.
Speaker 4 (30:13):
I know if I'm out there, my mom is in
the stands. I'm playing my butt off there.
Speaker 2 (30:18):
Wait to catch yourself all right, Going into that, we're
just gonna hear from no Fafeda real quick about breaking
the record before we get our guest, Nick foles On.
Speaker 4 (30:29):
Got nom for Fieda in the house, Eric Zona all
time touchdown passing leader Noah you're humble guy, You're a
quiet guy. You give all the credit to your teammates.
Come on, brother, tell me, how does you feel about
that record? I mean, I'm super happy, I'm super blessed.
Speaker 18 (30:48):
I would be lying if I if I, if I
didn't say that the records have been a goal of
mine and something I've been looking to, especially the career ones,
because those are actually hard to get.
Speaker 9 (30:58):
You gotta have a lot of consistency, consistency to do so.
Speaker 18 (31:01):
And then obviously the names really tweet tell m and
Nick Poles are great names to be able to be
in that company.
Speaker 9 (31:07):
So I'm should be blessed, extremely grateful.
Speaker 18 (31:10):
But I also know that that's not possible without God,
and that's not possible without our teammates.
Speaker 9 (31:15):
So football is ultimate team games, and I want to
be here about that. Excellent. I love you, Thank you
such question. All right, all.
Speaker 2 (31:25):
Right, great stuff right there once again from Ricky. And
now on the phone, I think we have that same
Nick Foles no Fafita was talking about.
Speaker 3 (31:34):
Nick?
Speaker 9 (31:35):
Is this you here?
Speaker 7 (31:37):
It's me? How's everyone doing?
Speaker 9 (31:39):
Hey?
Speaker 3 (31:39):
Nick?
Speaker 4 (31:40):
I can't believe that you're up after the celebration last night,
being duck into the Arizona Sports Hall of Fame.
Speaker 7 (31:46):
Oh yeah, it helps me. He got three kiddos. You
gotta get him down right after, And so I was
able to go to sleep at some more good time.
It's not like when we were back in the day
in college. So got some sleep. And I'm actually right
next to the bit school band about to do the
Wildcat Walk. So you're gonna get some of the school
band in the background.
Speaker 3 (32:02):
All right, he's all good. Well, we'll just talk to
you real quick before we get Willie t on. But
uh so, what do you think about no passing up
a time to noa?
Speaker 9 (32:12):
Oh?
Speaker 7 (32:13):
Man, I was so pumped on him. I think you know,
anytime you know you you break a record, I'm one
of those guys. I think it's just awesome. I mean,
I've been blessed to be a part of teams that
are broken records, and I know the feelings. You just
think about your teammates and what you're able to accomplish,
and what Noah has been able to accomplish in three
years here less than three years, it's truly amazing, and
it's a testament to you know, who he is as
(32:34):
a player, his coaches, his teammates, and you know, the fans,
you know, they love him, they want to and he
has another year, so he's gonna shatter this record to
where it's unreachable. And I couldn't be prouder of them.
Speaker 5 (32:47):
But Nick, you know there's another record on their rising
too that you hold, so hopefully you can be back
here next year.
Speaker 3 (32:54):
And passed that bation over to him for the yardage.
Speaker 7 (32:58):
Well, I think I think he's going to get them all.
Speaker 12 (33:01):
Man.
Speaker 7 (33:01):
I love it. I love that he's going after them all.
It's always great to see a great Wildcat when he's playing.
And we you know, the fans get to see Noah
for another year and just get to enjoy them, and
you know, it's really special.
Speaker 3 (33:17):
So take it in.
Speaker 4 (33:18):
Well, we're really excited about you being an honorary captain
today and doing the Wildcat Walk with the team and
getting a chance to come back home and see us
play against the Baylor Bears and hopefully get another win
and get win number eight.
Speaker 3 (33:32):
Eight.
Speaker 7 (33:32):
Yeah, yeah, eight and three sounds pretty good. So it's
a you know, I'm on from Texas. Originally a lot
of friends went to Baylor. I was with a friend
the other night. I reside in California now, but he
was a Baylor Bear, so I really want some bragging
rights from.
Speaker 3 (33:48):
The other end now.
Speaker 7 (33:49):
But it'll be it'll be a great battle here, you know,
eleven am kickoff. I'm used to the night games in
the desert, so this is different for everyone. But it's
a beautiful, beautiful morning right now, and I think the
team's gonna be ready to roll.
Speaker 4 (34:01):
Yeah, we'll have plenty of time to celebrate the rest
of the evenings.
Speaker 7 (34:05):
Hey, that is true.
Speaker 4 (34:07):
Yeah, because they've been playing their butts off all year
and I don't think it's going to.
Speaker 3 (34:11):
Be any different today. Hey, Nick, I don't think Nick.
Speaker 5 (34:14):
You know, senior night, Senior day here, I should say day,
not night, but the senior day. And can you reflect
on when you was a senior, your last day walking
on that field and being part of that team, and
you know, and what kind of motions you think these
kids are going through today.
Speaker 7 (34:29):
Yeah, it's a it's a really special thing. It's uh,
you know, for most of these players, it's the last
time that they're going to play football, and uh, there's
something that might go on, but I think it's just
you know, to mean, most of the day you you're
sort of reflecting on every single workout you did here,
every single moment you have with your teammates, your coaches,
the ups and downs, and it all comes to this
moment where you get to put it all in the field,
(34:52):
you know, in Tucson, in front of the crowd one
last time, and it's really special. And I just you know,
I was talking about it last night and my see,
one of my favorite moments of my career is my
last game here, you know, going up into the student
section and getting to hug my dad who came down
and just embracing you know, from my childhood. You know,
the you know, leadership, the work ethics that him and
(35:13):
my mom instilled in me, and just skin to have
that moment my last game, hug him. We were victorious,
walking off the field one last time. It's really special.
So I'm really proud of all these seniors. I hope
they really soak it all in. It's it's a special
time for everyone, including their family members and all the fans.
Speaker 4 (35:31):
So so, Nick, you actually tied Woolli's record, right.
Speaker 7 (35:38):
Yeah, I believe I tied. I tied Willie's record.
Speaker 4 (35:42):
Yeah yeah, So yeah, we got Willey on the line. Hey,
wille you want to chime in a little bit.
Speaker 3 (35:48):
There's it going.
Speaker 19 (35:48):
First off, Nick, congratulations on your induction into the Arizona
Hall of Fame and all your success.
Speaker 9 (35:56):
It's good to.
Speaker 3 (35:57):
Talk to you, man.
Speaker 19 (35:57):
It's been a while.
Speaker 3 (36:04):
No I think we still got him. It's still that Nick.
Speaker 4 (36:07):
But anyway, what we got Willy Willy, Hey, congratulations to
you man, passing up a time to no So give
us your thoughts on that.
Speaker 19 (36:16):
Oh, man, I think it's great. I think Noah's a kid,
you know, kind of how Nick was talking earlier. Just
a kid with high character and you know, someone that
you know, I know after you know, his what first
full year Underfish and then Fish leaves and he had
a chance to get out of here.
Speaker 3 (36:36):
And he stuck through it.
Speaker 19 (36:37):
You know. So a guy like that, you know, you
want to see him succeed. And uh, you know, I'm
I'm happy it's in that it's taking this record, and
you know he's gonna he's got two more games to
three more games to blow it out the water, you know.
Speaker 5 (36:54):
And with Nick this Lamont man, how you doing, brother,
Been a while since I spoke and seen you.
Speaker 19 (37:00):
There.
Speaker 3 (37:00):
Nick, not Nick Willy Reillly.
Speaker 5 (37:03):
I apologize, really, I apologize this Lamar Brother, how.
Speaker 3 (37:08):
He's still he's still a sleep Yeah, I'm still marsh
middled in my brain. Hey, Hey, how you doing, Willie Brother?
Speaker 5 (37:13):
This Lamont Man, good morning, good morning, Good mor When
you speak of character and Noah, you have to we
have to say you was that same type of a player, brother,
I mean, you believed in your teammates. Teammates was first,
and Noah's that same same type of individual. Would you
would you base that on you guys culture or you
(37:34):
based what would you base that around?
Speaker 19 (37:36):
I think that's a big part of it. Yeah, Uh,
you know the way that our parents brought us up,
you know, in that Polynesian culture, it's uh, it's very
much you know, looking out for the people next to you.
It's it's a community, you know. And I think he's
taken that and brought that to the team. And I
think that's been one of the coolest things to see
is you know, when Fish did leave, how there's a
(37:59):
group of players together. You don't see that too often
anymore nowadays, with you know, how you could pop up
and transfer anywhere. It's uh, it's pretty rare. To see
and I think that piece alone just shows so much
who he is and how his how his teammates see
him as well.
Speaker 4 (38:17):
Yeah, we were talking a little bit earlier about records
and uh, and how it's going to be a rare
occasion to see records broken in the future if players
continue to be transactional and less northelfieda, whether they stayed
the course and stay home and you know, you finish
what you start. Uh, what's your opinion on on on that?
Speaker 19 (38:40):
I mean, I my opinion. I mean I you know,
and you know how you were talking about you know,
no and I and our culture and our parents. My
parents wouldn't let me transfer. If I said this is
where I'm going, I got to write it out.
Speaker 18 (38:51):
You know.
Speaker 19 (38:52):
That was my decision, admit it. So yeah, you know,
I think I think it would be one of those
things where, yea, it will be hard to break because
a lot of guys don't stay.
Speaker 7 (39:02):
Somewhere for three or four years.
Speaker 3 (39:03):
They're there for a year.
Speaker 19 (39:04):
Or two and then they jump shipped somewhere else because
it's not working out. And you know, it's funny. My
girlfriend was even asking me, you know, like with this transfer,
like how do you know if they went, you know, like,
do they really care about you of a or And
I was like, yeah, that's a good question, you know,
was like I didn't really have to do with that,
and my teammates didn't really have to do with that
(39:25):
too too much, you know, so you know, it was
it is a little different now. I mean even in
the sense of just a school pride and everything. Right
back in the day when you committed, you were signing
yourself for five years, you know, and there was there
was no out of it. I mean there was, but
you had to sit a year, and nobody wants to
(39:45):
do that and lose your year of eligibility and stuff.
So yeah, I think with this new day and age,
it is going to be harder to break some of
these records for guys that that, you know, I want
to go test the water somewhere else.
Speaker 3 (39:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (40:00):
Yeah, And we all felt that sense of commitment to
each other too as teammates.
Speaker 3 (40:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (40:05):
Well, well really looked like we were about to wind
this thing down. Last question, what was your emotion going
into a senior day like these young kids there last
rah on this football field this afternoon.
Speaker 19 (40:18):
Yeah, I mean it was you know, senior and night
was was a big one. I mean for us, we
were playing Arizona State at home, you know, so it
was senior night along with our last game of the year,
and for us, you know, if we won, we were
guaranteed the ball and if we and if we won,
we guaranteed that they were out of a bowl, you know.
Speaker 7 (40:40):
So I think that part was kind of.
Speaker 19 (40:42):
Itsing on the cake that that was the scummies, right, yeah, yeah,
you know, And so that was one of the best
feelings just knowing that we secured our bowl game and
you know, went bowling for the first time in ten
years at that time.
Speaker 3 (41:01):
Mexico boat. That was a Vegas Vegas that's right, the
Las Vegas bo That's good.
Speaker 19 (41:07):
Yeah, Vegas ball. So it was nice to you know,
be able to not only beat arizon the State at home,
your last game with you know, all your teammates that
you've been writing for four or five years, but also
to keep them out of the ball and guarantee us
once So that was a that was a pretty special moment.
Speaker 3 (41:26):
Awesome.
Speaker 2 (41:27):
All right, Well, thank you Willie for joining us. Uh
I hope you're hope you get to catch the game
from where you're at.
Speaker 7 (41:33):
And yeah, I guarantee you.
Speaker 2 (41:38):
Take care and with that we will be taking a
commercial break before our final segment of the morning.
Speaker 14 (41:46):

just wanted to give a huge shout out to Natalie
Fernandez and our title sponsors Arizona Health, Meridian Wealth Management,
and Desert Diamond Casino. Big news coming out of you know,
(45:22):
the football program stadium gets the naming rights bot right
by Casino Del Soul.
Speaker 3 (45:29):
What did you guys think about that landmark deal?
Speaker 4 (45:31):
Sixty million dollar deal over twenty years, so you know,
Memorial Stadium will now be known as Casino Del Soul Stadium,
and that's huge, and that's gonna be huge for our
stadium and our fans to improve our sound system and everything,
to making fan experience that much better and to help
all of our other sports out.
Speaker 3 (45:50):
This is gonna be awesome.
Speaker 5 (45:52):
Need the kids, you know, the player is gonna benefit
it from just as well. My understanding and me being
a fan, I'm looking forward to it, like you say,
because that sound system is not good. It's not good
in that stadium, so it'd be good to be able
to hear with the announcmers are saying. Finally and maybe
they're gonna do some different with some different stuff with
(46:12):
some of those seats too, so'd be beautiful to see
that name up there. So my question is what they're
gonna do with McHale, right right, And that's kind of.
Speaker 2 (46:21):
Been the that's kind of been the question on everybody's mind,
at least on message boards and stuff like that.
Speaker 3 (46:28):
So we're talking talking about sound good as ihearish stadium
at McHale.
Speaker 2 (46:36):
But yeah, uh talking talking off air, Ricky getting into teaching.
Speaker 3 (46:40):
Huh, you got a man of many hats of it.
We had a ball last week.
Speaker 4 (46:44):
We had about fifty uh, ladies from all walks of life,
business alumni, supporters, CEOs of companies, and we had football
one on one for women and uh it was funny
because a lot of the women they said, well, can
I bring my husband's Like no, no husband, just women,
(47:05):
just women, and uh so it was it was a
fun event. It was teaching them just some interesting because
I can't even say the word, just some fundamental things
allowed them to watch the game differently, you know, teaching
them personnel groupings, when certain groupings go on the field,
whether you can expect run or pass.
Speaker 19 (47:25):
You know.
Speaker 4 (47:26):
We taught them a little bit about our personnel that
hitsed the feeld. We talked about Noah or Mahdi, you know,
Tray Smith, you know, and so and I've gotten several calls,
and you know, I was looking at the TV and
I'm watching the game and I see twelve person.
Speaker 3 (47:41):
Now I'm like, oh, I understand what he's saying.
Speaker 4 (47:43):
Now, you know, and the husband's probably didn't even know
your husband's problem, didn't even know.
Speaker 3 (47:48):
And then we had some good trivia.
Speaker 4 (47:50):
You know, how many head football coaches have there been
in Arizona history, you know, And they didn't get it
exactly thirty four, but they were close to it, so
you know, they would win stuffed wold and Wilma dolls.
We had great food, great old dus and you know,
and it was a fun time.
Speaker 3 (48:09):
They got a tour the facility.
Speaker 4 (48:10):
A lot of the women had never been in the
facility before, in the locker room, you know, and they
were taking pictures in front of the locker room. Then
we had a team picture out on the stadium, a
feel on the on the A and and uh, it
was a great experience for him.
Speaker 3 (48:25):
It was a great time.
Speaker 4 (48:26):
And uh, I think it's something that you know, we
can do again next year. And uh, and I'm sure
that you know, we can incorporate the men into it
a little bit. But the thing that the thing that
I appreciated.
Speaker 5 (48:38):
Is is when I walked the ben and I walked
I walked a bed for the beginning and I got
kicked out. But the way it was set up, I
mean I made it was first class all the way
and and and hats hats off to Janine and her
her team. I mean they just did a beautiful thing.
The bang up, the assistance all, they just did it all,
(49:02):
did it all so in the colors of the you know,
the Arizona colors basically, which is the Honley Huller colors.
Speaker 3 (49:07):
It was beautiful, It was set up great. And what
was the inspiration behind that.
Speaker 4 (49:12):
Well, when I was at Cincinnati, Marvin Lewis had used
to put on a football for women class to raise
money for cancer awareness because his assistant that ran his
foundation passed away from cancer.
Speaker 3 (49:25):
And uh it was a great success.
Speaker 4 (49:27):
I mean we'd have four hundred women show up at
UH at the stadium, and but we took it to
another level.
Speaker 3 (49:34):
They would go through drills and it was you know,
it was fun, fun time.
Speaker 4 (49:39):
So I just thought it'd be a good thing to do,
especially and winning helps, you know, and and the timing
of it and everything to do it during the season
just made it special.
Speaker 3 (49:51):
Man.
Speaker 2 (49:51):
I can't imagine Coach Ricky Hunley having having a bunch
of women doing wind sprints.
Speaker 4 (49:56):
I had my whistle, and you know, I blow that whistle.
They all get an attention. He did wil he actually
he tried to do a little dancing. Well, Coach Carter
showed up. He showed up, and then a little mc
hammer broke out, can't touch this, and and he did
his dance and he said, I'm not dancing. Lets you
dance with So I I faked a.
Speaker 3 (50:17):
Few moves, you know, but there you go. I can't
touch Coach Carter. The Ricky shuffle, not the Icky shuffle.
Speaker 2 (50:25):
Well, okay, guys, got got a few minutes left here
in the show. About about two to three. I mean,
what do we what are final thoughts? Final thoughts going
into the Bailey game.
Speaker 4 (50:34):
Well, I think it's gonna be a great atmosphere is
going to be electric. I think the kids are going
to show up and show out. H I think that
they're gonna be focused and uh, and they're gonna finish
this thing the way it's supposed to be finished. And
we just keep taking the one one at a time.
You know, it's like our guys. You know, they're they're
(50:55):
in the zone and they just heads down, chopping wood,
you know, single focus, single purpose.
Speaker 5 (51:01):
Well, you know, I think it's this is a perfect
game to be playing a team that kind of matches
up with us in Baylor. I mean, Baylor come in here,
you know, with a purpose in mind too, is to
get that additional win for themselves. What they five and
five right now, I believe or something like that, So
they need a win to be Bowl eligible, you know,
(51:21):
but us winning the game also allow us to move
ourselves in a better position as far as a better bowl.
Speaker 3 (51:28):
And who don't want to go to a better bowl.
Speaker 5 (51:30):
I'm excited to see, you know, these two teams match
up offensively and defensively, and I think if again, if
Arizona can just you know, stay balanced with their their
attack and get out there, you know, I think it's
going to be a pretty even game. I can see
a game score wise, I would say about twenty seven
(51:52):
to like a twenty type of a game period, and
I'm looking excited to see what what what Norm continued
to do, Noel continued to grow, and Noil continued to develop.
Because as long as Nord continued to grow and develop
everybody else around him, will you know. So that's why
I love to see and and God bless these seniors.
(52:13):
It's going to be an emotional game for them too.
So yeah, it's gonna be turnovers, third down situation. Who
went third down? We can get him in third and
long and get after him.
Speaker 3 (52:24):
I mean, it's gonna be a fun night for us.
But fun day. Fun day's new.
Speaker 18 (52:32):
You know.
Speaker 5 (52:32):
Actually there hadn't been many day games, you know. I
we played in the day game, and I think we
probably played in the earliest day game was ten o'clock
game against kickoff was at ten o'clock.
Speaker 2 (52:45):
I'll go back and watch that one over the offseason.
I just want to thank everybody again once again, our sponsors,
Arizona Health, Meritian Wealth Management, and Desert Diamond Casino. And
looking forward to everyone seeing everybody down at the stadium tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (52:58):
But this is our last show, Ricky for the year.
Why we'll get a one off and do something with
a Bowl game or something. All right, there, you go
get Steve chopping here, we leave Steve.
Speaker 3 (53:06):
We'll just take alright, burn down everybody there. Thanks Ray,
