This is I on the Ball withSteve Rivera and Jagan zalid Sound Fox Sports
fourteen fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services. It's sure your most Prized Possessions kt
z R TWU SA in iHeartRadio Station. Good, good afternoon, everybody.
Welcome to Eye on the Ball hereon Fox Sports fourteen fifty. I'm Steve
Rivera. He's Jagan Zauce. Wegot our guy Ryan in today. I
(00:25):
did remember your name, right,so you're a little worried about it.
I forgot Henry's name yesterday. Whoare you guys? Hey, Welcome to
Thursday. This Thursday, Thursday's hotday. A lot of news going on
at U of A. Yeahs draftis on football? Second day of the
draft. Basketball. Do you wantto talk about basketball? Yeah? What
(00:47):
in the world are people thinking?Well, you know, it's weird how
this thing happens. And you know, there's Pelly Larson got drafted. We
know that, all right, Andhe's drafted with the forty fourth pick.
It's like, okay, who draftedabout somebody else? Oh? But that's
why, you know, because that'swhere I went When you said basketball,
(01:10):
what did you have schedule? Oh, we'll talk about that in a second,
because I have a rant. That'swhat I thought. You people are
paying attention to the draft right now, So pel larcen draft. You know
people fans want to know when theU Good luck because you're going to be
waiting a long time. Yeah.Well, Pella Larson gets drafted, drafted
forty four. It was the HoustonRockets draft pick, and apparently they picked
(01:36):
him. But now we're there, the question is did he did the pick
get traded before or after he gotdrafted? And he ended up in Miami
by way of Atlanta. He'll playwith your boy Hoimy Hawkins? Is that?
Oh, that's right, that's whereHyman Hawkins is. They had some
battles to those two guys. ButPala Larson has been drafted with the forty
(01:57):
fourth pick. Uh, we thinkyou got drafted by Houston, then traded
to Atlanta, then traded to Miami. So ultimately he ends up with with
with the Marlin. More importantly ifyou're keeping Marlin, more important if you
keeping score. I won the bidover Brent. Let's take this call.
We got call already hire on theair and I and the ball. What's
(02:17):
cracking, guys? How you guysdoing where you are? What? What?
What area code are you? Firstof all, Steve, I know
this is like a Melancholi reminder thatyou get all the time. But condolence
is sincerely, big dog. We'llreach out in pay for you and hugs
(02:38):
and your mama up there and sheyeah, it is what it is.
Man. But this we got money. This this this rule is we got
four point seven millions. Some ofus have it coming to us. Oh,
Jay, subscribe, you subscribe SundayTicket right, Sunday Ticket is like,
(03:00):
what a four billion dollar judgment?I'm supposed to go to customers?
But first of all, point sevenit's a point seven that's closer to almost
a five million dollar judgment back tous. Okay, okay, and okay
half of it goes to the lawyers. All right. So that's the first
thing you need to know. Andthen you know what somebody somebody said,
(03:23):
Okay, do I get how muchof the four billion dollars? Do I
get? Somebody said two dollars? Two dollars? And then that's something stuffing.
But see I'm not gonna get crackedbecause I was that jerk. And
then this is why the PAC twelveis no more because of a jerk's like
me loving our situation where we usedto leverage. Well, I can't watch
my Wildcats, so take me tothe retention department and they take me the
(03:46):
retention Oh yeah, I will keepyou drink. Give me if you would
give me Sunday ticket for free.I can't watch my Arizona Wildcats. And
then I lived in that sin andit blew up in my face. But
I know a bunch of people whodid that. I would. I would
leverage because the pack twop network wasn'tavailable on direct TV. But this is
(04:09):
still cool, man, it's it'sit's cool, and it's gonna change the
game where they can just hoard ourteams. I know there's crafty Arizona Cardinal
fans. When you guys get bothof these Arizona Cardinal games. They used
to put Cowboy Games America team onit. I didn't have to buy something
tickets, But now I could justsubscribe. Hopefully the game has changed and
(04:30):
I could just watch Cowboy games.I don't have to watch everything else and
maybe the red Zone that'd be dope. Yeah no, and it's still expensive.
You know, even now that it'son YouTube, it's still expensive,
although they're doing more things with iton it's a it's a fortune. And
you're right. I know a bunchof people who did what you did,
Mike, who who purposely called inand said, well, I can't get
the packed off network, I'm leaving, and they okay, we'll give it
(04:50):
t for free. Then they gotit was in the hole. It was
like it was so it would giveus a reason to go to the bar,
well some of us out and goto the U of a game,
you know what I mean. Iwas fortunate to travel with the team like
you guys were, George Khalil, you guys. But but we got we
(05:13):
we could leverage that and I wouldlook forward to it every year. That
was the eighth in the hole. But whoever gets money, like I know
my my brother in law specifically wouldbuy it. I want to. I
want to see what he gets andthe returns, what it what it would
look like, maybe because he didit Avenue for years. Oh yeah,
I got it. I've had itevery year since the first year it became
(05:34):
available. Yeah. Man, Andthe red zone just changed the game.
So and if they have the optionlike from some of us could jail break
fire sticks but that's here and there. But now the options to just scream
your team, team, your team, and then get red zone. I
could live with that, especially beinga Cowboy fan. So and for into
(05:56):
my misery, they're going to haveto do something like that, because this
is great. It's fun that thiscame up because I just got my my
notice that they're going to start chargingme my you know, four payments,
it's four hundred and well, wecould have a group thing. I could
put it in a value money inthe sign and just look at it with
the passports bro. You know, man, we don't on our listeners and
(06:19):
college CC we don't. We don'tpromote. But but again, I miss
y'all, you already know sports thatare coming and coming fast. Andy Mechnical
disappoints again, just like the DallasCowboys and the Arizona Wildcat basketball team.
Are you are you still doing yourpodcast? Yes, yes, we're still
(06:44):
doing the Cowboy of podcast. Ihad a kind of a setback with the
fat Boy Sports podcast, but it'llget rolling once football gets going. But
thank you. Remember the Cowboy ofpodcast on YouTube. You already know that's
on Tuesday night. Uh, thosefive o'clock Mountain Standard Times look it up.
(07:04):
So it's all bad news all thetime. Oh yeah, yeah.
Like I said, it's Redical soccer, it's Arizona basketball. We're just chipper
here and we're extremely masochistic on thisside of the humid, nasty Gucci son.
But I love y'all again. Condolencesagainst You're my dog, you my
(07:25):
uncles. I love y'all later.Nothing like starting off a show that yeah
he talked about, the go aheadand tell him what they're talking about with
the There was a there was averdict today in a in a class action
lawsuit against against Direct TV regarding Sundayticket the the award to that's supposed to
(07:48):
go to residential customers is a totalof four billion dollars. I don't know
how they're gonna divvy that up,but I'm gonna go get some of mine
because I've been a customer of theirssince the day they started. I don't
know how I can prove that, but and I don't know how much that
means, you know, to somebodylike me. But then the then they
there are several hundred million that aregoing to that's going out to commercial courses.
(08:11):
The commercial customers. The the vertthe verdict is about the fact that
because they had a monopoly on thetelecast that they were able to uh jack
up the prices of it. Uh. It's against the NFL and and and
Direct TV. So because you know, the NFL gave it to Direct TV
and allowed Direct TV to discharge whateverthey wanted, you know, four three,
(08:35):
four, five hundred. Now it'salmost five hundred dollars. That that
was unfair practices. And so sowhat's it gonna be no, or I
don't know, I don't know.I mean, you know, they haven't
sent me anything. Are you paying? So that you're paying five hundred bucks
pretty much four hundred and eighty nineyou get every NFL game and Red Zone.
Uh. And then with with itgot moved to YouTube last year.
(09:00):
With YouTube, there's some cool thingswith it now because you can they have
they have groupings of games, soyou can set up your screen and there
are three games or four games allyou know, all on one screen,
or you can have three games inred zone or whatever. Now you don't
get to pick, you know, the groupings. It's like they set they
set up what they think are interesting. So like I'll find a you know,
(09:22):
like like say there's four games,I'll find one that said has three
games that I'm really interested in,I'll put it on there. Or you
can watch one game, but youget every game. You got every game
plus Red Zone. Now what youdon't get what's blacked out on it is
the games that are on your localtelevision station. So when the Cardinals are
on, Okay, you don't getthe Cardinals if they're on, you know,
(09:45):
if they're on, what do weget? We're on Fox and CBS.
So whatever the Fox and CBS gamesare on here, you can't get
on on Sunday ticket. But yougot all the games, any game you
want. So for somebody like afantasy player, maybe somebody gambles a little
bit and has game that they wouldin otherwise see here. I know for
gamblers that hasn't done many good. You know, I I love it because
I love being able to pick whatevergame I want to see. You know,
(10:09):
if there's a play, if youknow my quarterback is playing, and
you know my fantasy quarterback is playingin a game that I couldn't see here
on the regular thing. I'm nota big fan of Red Zone. I'm
I can't I can't keep up withit. And I really didn't like how
they did red Zone last year, where they would change basically every play they'd
(10:31):
go to a new game, whereasthe way they did red Zone before is
they would get into a game, stay with it for a couple of players
or a drive, and then goto the next one. Now they changed
every single twice. So America hasadhd well. I see, I can't.
I can't. I lose my mindwith the tickers and all that stuff.
Okay, anyway, so anyways, then we're done talking. Pala Larson
got drafted. We're waiting for tosee if Keisha Johnson gets drafted. Another
(10:56):
Connecticut guy just got drafted. Sothat's four Connecticut players who've been draftrafted.
We just got drafted to Ronni James. James, the Lakers did get him.
Okay, my shot still says onthe clock. Okay, So okay,
so there's only three picks left andhas not been picked. So maybe
you know, maybe at this pointyou hope you just try to go to
(11:18):
a place it's the best for him. He'll be able to go to a
team that wants him to at leasta show, and he'll have a good
summer league or try to have agod summer league and see what happens.
Still, I bet with Brian, and we talked about this yesterday. I
didn't think either of them either whenwe get drafted. Apparently I had Palty
before I had Johnson, and Idon't think it's it's gonna be tough to
make a roster for both of them. It's just people don't understand. Okay,
(11:41):
you play really well in college, blah blah blah, it's different in
the NBA. It's just different. It is. You got it. Look,
look, did you watch any ofthe NBA yesterday the draft? No?
Exactly, and neither do I.Nobody really did. And it was
unexciting. It was exciting to youexactly. I don't well foreign players,
which is not a surprise. Iwent, I went by it, and
(12:03):
and Stephen A. Smith was ranting, and so I couldn't change. Okay
enough, but there was no nolove fest for it. Today was no
different. It was what two hoursago it started. Now it's almost over.
The draft itself was very weak, and so uh, what's to like?
My my again, my only interest, my interest always in is in
(12:26):
what happens to the Arizona guys. And so that's that's why I I for
that reason, I would sit downand watch it. Right, It's like
I got a wait to find out, like I, like I said,
I passed by it and and uhand Steven A. Smith was going off
on something. So immediately change thechannel. I put on the dateline or
something. Yeah, listen, Idon't want to talk about this now because
we only have two minutes. SoI talked about Pele, we talked about
(12:46):
Johnson, and we'll talk about Calebon the other side of the guests,
which is to Lenny Snell Delaney ShanellOlympian, two time Olympia now from Tucson
High and the uf A. Sowe'll talk to her about her journey now
and it happens. Uh, youknow what happens is from now to she
goes to Paris. Right, andthen at the second hour have Lamont Hunley,
(13:07):
who one of our great sponsors, and I wanted to talk to him.
He says, he says to me, this morning, Uh, you
must be running out of guest.I said, it's a summer. It's
a summer. We need people totalk. And I said, well,
we'll talk about the incoming freshman justwhatever. Uh, you know, his
brother's obviously still in the program, but he can kind of talk about it
without any prejudice. Uh. Andthen just about uh, there was another
(13:28):
thing I want to talk to himabout, not so much and I know,
but just about uh, the projectionsand things like that, you know,
because he doesn't he's a big fanand he's and he and is it
too much to ask to be reallygood? Uh, we'll see he's excitement
for the for the Big twelve, and then we'll talk about on the other
side when we have to is theschedule, the schedule, the Big the
(13:50):
Big twelve basketball schedule dropped from thestandpoint of who's playing who and such a
massive, massive, massive omission andmy mind by you're you're not alone.
Just it just makes you think, does anybody think about this stuff before they
do this stuff? And so we'llget we'll get to that, and maybe
(14:11):
they overcorrect, which makes no sense, you know that they don't want to.
I don't know, you'd have toask. We can, we'll we'll
have that discussion because it makes whatthey did with the schedule makes zero sense
to me. And we'll get intothat. So let's go ahead and take
our break. She's got to hitthe road. He's got to run,
and he is running. All right, We'll we'll be right back. We're

the phone. We have Delainey Snell, now a two time Olympian. How
are you, Delaney? We're doingwell. Thanks for joining us. What
an exciting time for you? Isit is? Is it exciting as we
think it is? Yes? Yeah, I mean when the Olympics only happened
every four years, it's hard notto be excited. So so how the
(20:26):
anticipation of this Olympics that okay, you you made it last last time,
you know, it was your firsttime and all that kind of stuff.
Was the second time around? More? Was it more nerve wracking or less
because you had been through it?You know? Maybe more pressure on yourself
too. You know, you needto make it this time because you're you
made it last time. I mean, how how did all that work with
(20:48):
you? You know? Mentally?Yeah, I think first time is always
stressful just because it's something that's neverhappened before, and trying to make that
happen for the first time is alwayscourse going to be very stressful. But
I think with me potentially retiring afterthis Olympics, you know, this might
be my last competition, So Ifeel like I did have a little more
(21:11):
pressure on myself because obviously I wantedto end my diving career at the Olympics.
So I still feel like that pressurejust hasn't really changed. It's just
a little different. Yeah, howold are you? You're like twenty three?
You're like twelve, twenty five,fi man, and so the life,
the life of a diver is liketwenty six, what is it?
(21:34):
It depends on the event. I'ma ten meter diver, so I take
a little bit more impact because I'mhigher up. So a lot of ten
meter divers retire a little earlier.Three meter. Sometimes you'll have some that
are in the thirty seven range, but that's that's pushing this so if it
could real quick. We talked aboutthis day a couple of days ago when
(21:56):
you when we try to get youon and you said, yes, carry
Strugg uh direct Landy Schnell and whoelse? Right. Well, so,
I mean there's a lot of Olympianslike gone to the U of A and
that kind of stuff. But whenyou're talking about somebody from Tucson, Uh,
you know, we well, youknow, when we talk about great
Olympians from Tucson, we think ofCarrie Strug because of that, you know,
incredible Olympics that she had and thedrama of of that. But I
(22:21):
think you got to be mentioned inthat neighborhood. Uh. You're probably gonna
say, uh, you don't reallywant to talk about that, but tell
us. I mean, how doyou feel about what you've done and how
where you feel you rate in Tucson, Arizona in this area. Yeah,
I mean there's a reason I wenthere for college. I just felt like
it wasn't my time to leave Arizonayet. And I feel like part of
(22:44):
me going to Arizona for college wasmy way of giving back to the community
because I always felt like the community, you know, treated me so well
as an athlete. And you know, I was close with like Southern Arizona
road runners because my family is afamily of runners. So I've just been
involved in the Tucson community since Iwas very little. Yeah, so it
feels pretty cool to be able tokind of go down in history as one
(23:07):
of the one of the great athletes. You uh, I don't know.
You probably you started gymnastics. Ithink if you if I recall, right,
uh, do you pinch yourself?Could you think this little girl from
Tucson would have gotten this not justonce, but twice? I don't know,
It's hard hard to say. Ifeel like initially I thought maybe that
(23:29):
was an option in gymnastics, andthen you know, a lot changed and
at that point it was like, okay, well I just need to find
another sport to hopefully get a collegescholarship, just because financially, that was
my way to college. So yeah, so it really was about me trying
to find a scholarship in some sport. And you know, the moment I
(23:51):
did my first sive, I kindof realized, you know what, I
think I can actually do more inthe sport than just college. And sure
enough, here we are. Youare. So, how did your I
don't know, your your your training, your routine and all that change since
you were you were out of collegethis last year, you know, how
did you go about it? Wheredid you know? Where did you do
all your work? Where did youtrain? Just tell us a little bit
(24:15):
about this last year, what thatwas like for you getting ready to try
out for the Olympics. Yeah,it really hasn't changed that much, just
because I still train at the university. I still have access to the weight
room and the athletic training facility becauseI am an alum, so I still
have access to all of that, and it's still my same coach from college.
So really the only thing that's changedis I haven't had to go travel
(24:37):
to duel meets every other week andand do all the competition that came with
college diving, and so honestly,it was a little easier because I was
able to focus more on those biginternational competitions, and really I had time
to work on the basics works atwork on the detail work that during a
college season you can't really work onbecause you need to be performance ready pretty
(25:00):
much the whole year. So howdid ten meter become your you know,
your event, because I, forone, wouldn't even want to go up
there. But you know, thisis you know when I think of diving
night, you know, I thinkof that because it's such an incredible event.
You know, you're you're so highup and you're you can do so
(25:22):
many things. But how did thatbecome your event? M For me,
it just kind of clicked. It'sfunny though, actually because the first time
I jumped off five meter, whichis like halfway up to ten meter,
I actually landed with my arms outand I like smacked my aunt arms on
the water, and I remember beinglike, no way, I'm going to
be a power diver. A tenmeter diver like that hurt. I don't
(25:44):
want to do that again. Andit's just funny because you know, after
I took my first dive on tenmeter, I realized, you know what,
this event is just clicking for mea lot better than the springboard is.
And yeah, I think just fromthere, I realized I enjoyed competing
it more, I enjoyed training itmore, and it just it just clicked.
(26:06):
So I'm not sure how you wantto react to this question, because
we've talked to you at least mistergeist, Jay, and I continue to
say that over the last couple ofyears of mister Geist in track and you
and in diving were like to thetwo faces at the University of Arizona that
should have been killing it with nil. And I think it was mister Geist
that said, uh, it's notabout us, because we were in these
(26:27):
sports that kind of no one reallypays attention to, and the football and
basketball teams get it. Well, what's your thoughts on that, because you
too, you two guys were fantasticand probably should have gotten a boatload of
money. Yeah, I think thatis the tough part of being in a
sport like we're in. It's just, you know, unfortunately it just doesn't
(26:47):
get the same attention, and likeit is, it is hard finding nil
deals. And I think also whataffected that is, like the whole Nile
stuff happened while while we were incollege work after college, so we were
just so used to not being ableto accept those things, and then all
of a sudden, so much changedin a matter of months. And so
(27:10):
I think that on top of beingin a sport that just doesn't really get
the same recognition, is just itmade it a little more difficult right,
Well, we talk about this,we talk about this, and let me
say this this way. So footballplayers worked the butt off. Basketball players
worked the butt off, of course, but you know what, so to
gymnasts, so to divers, soto women's basketball players, and there's no
(27:32):
I don't know if equity is theright word, but you know where I'm
going with it, right Yeah,Yeah, I just think, you know,
unfortunately, we're not the sport thathas hundreds of sands in the sands
like we're We're just not not wellknown. People don't really understand the sport.
And I think if there was moreeffort to put diving out there and
(27:52):
more ability to put diving out there, then more people would understand it.
Because in other countries, I mean, it's a big sport. You go
to everybody knows who the divers are. You go to Mexico, Great Britain,
divers in those countries, just becausethere's more effort to make it known,
right Yeah. Interesting. Interesting,We're talking to Delaney Schanel, two
time Olympian, Tucson High grad Juvegrad. So Blaney, tell us a
(28:18):
little bit about what happens from nowuntil you head to Paris. What are
you doing, and then what's thatgoing to be like once you get there,
You've been through it once, butit's probably still going to be a
little different. Yeah, I thinkthe big difference is that there will be
spectators in Paris, so that's kindof the new thing. Family's also going
(28:40):
and so there's going to be thedistraction of like trying to see my family,
but like we've been told that there'sjust not a lot of time to
see them because you're going to becold left and right for media stuff,
you're going to be training, you'regoing to be competing, and there's like
no access to the village for outsiders, so pretty much just athletes, and
so it's very hard for Olympic athletesto aftually get to see a family.
(29:03):
And I think that's going to besomething that's new for me that I'm going
to have to manage with my familyand really communicate like, look, there's
only so much time I'm going toget with you. And then yeah,
just having the spectators there, Ithink is going to be a massive change.
Because Tokyo, of course it wasjust my dive team that was there
and so the stands were empty andI felt like practice, that's I think
(29:26):
what made it so easy to goin there and perform. So what's what's
the what's the routine between now andthen? So right now, it's just
training back to the same routine ofyou know, one to two practices a
day weightlifting, getting in the rehabroom and doing some preventative rehab and just
(29:48):
yeah, just taking care of mybody and getting ready to go. So
let me say this, your fouryears removed from the last time, you
even sound different. You sound moremore mature, if you will, So
don't you, I mean, doyou feel that way too, that you
are a KG veteran or however youwant to describe it. Yeah, I
mean obviously experience comes with that. And you know, I've gone through a
(30:11):
graduate program and I feel like evenjust guessing my education added a little sophistication,
I guess, But it's just there'sbeen a lot of roads east.
What what are you? What areyou going to do after this? So
I'm actually going to be moving toColorado in December with my fiance, so
(30:32):
planning a wedding also, so that'sanother thing. But no pressure, no
pressure, no pressure. So areyou gonna what did you get your degree
in? And what are you goingto try to do with it? Yeah,
so I got my degree in thespeech language pathology program, so Masters
of science, and I'll be hopefullyworking in a hospital setting, maybe acute
care with adults, most like trauaticbrain injury or stroke. If I were
(30:57):
you, i'd wear your medal everywhere. I'm too scared to bring it everywhere,
no thoughts of coaching or anything likethat. You are, You're just
going to put it behind you,you know. I feel like it's going
to be really hard to put itbehind just because it's been my life.
I feel like, unfortunately, athletesget so wrapped up in this sport that
(31:18):
it's just like it almost becomes youridentity. So I don't think I'm going
to be able to let go ofit completely. I'm sure I'll try coaching
or somehow say involved with the sports. Yeah, well incredible. Well again,
you know, you're you have tobe mentioned among you know, the
greats and Tucson not just not justas an Olympian, but just one of
the great athletes, right whether it'sa baseball player or a football player or
(31:42):
whatever. You know, Tucson. When it comes to that, I'll just
say Tucson's not as big as suresome of these other places that spit out
great athletes all the time. Socongratulations on all of that. And you
have made everybody proud. Yeah,I mean it's an honor to represent Usson.
So you're up here and it's homeand nice, stay cool in Colorado.
(32:02):
We'll keep an eye out for you. Are you coming back to Arizona?
You're going directly to Colorado. I'llbe in Colorado or sorry, I'll
be in Arizona until I finished myclinic hours because I have my fee,
but i still need to finish clinichours, so I'll be there. Maybe
do you need a note from somebodyto you know, to to you know,
(32:25):
to be able to get off ofthose hours and stuff and go to
the Olympics or will help you withthat requirement? Well, well we might
have you back when you can return. Yeah, would love we'd love to
have you. Okay, good luck, Hey, best of luck? All
right? Thanks? Lay cool?Yeah, awesome, cool, you're right,
(32:46):
She's yeah, it feels more moresort more as short of herself.
You remember last time she was kindof like a kind of like she was
twenty one. She was very young, so I'm still mature. I know,
I get to I get told allthe time. By the way,
by the way, Johnson was nothe did not get drafted. Figure go
(33:07):
figure. You know, I wonderis he disappointed or probably like the end
of the day, he'll be withthe team. Yeah, he's like okay.
You know, if you get toa point, like with six picks
left, you said, okay, nobody drafted, I would say yes,
because now you get the pick andchoose or another hand. Steve, you
know, you can always say, man, I got drafted in the NBA,
(33:28):
and that'll get you what that nickel, get your nickel at the end
of the day, I know it'slanding. It's like you're if you're the
heavyweight champion of the world one time. So what you know, once once
once a heavyweight champion, always aheavyweight champion. Once you were you know,
if NBA draft pick, always anif he sticks in the NBA in
the end, the idea is tostick. So you're right, I mean,
(33:51):
from that standpoint, yes, youmight as well just go to a
you know, go to somewhere whereyou can fit. But to be able
to put that merit badge on yourchest that you got drapped in NBA.
You and I live differently. Youand I live differently. Look good,
play good exactly exactly, jump high, good matter. Okay, let's go,
(34:13):

Hey, welcome back to my Iin the Ball here on Fox Sports
fourteen fifty. I'm Steve, You'reJay, and we got our guy Ryan
with the no breaking news but laterHill of breaking news. How was a
(36:43):
quick interview that was real. Ifanyone wants to give us a call five
two oh four one six forty,we have plenty of time for take some
calls. We want to discuss thebasketball Yeah, schedule. I thought that
would be your biggest rent today. It is. You know, here's the
(37:04):
thing. You know, sometimes thingsmake so much sense where it's it's so
much common sense that people don't realizethat something makes all the sense of the
world and they just look past it. Right, Nobody thinks about it.
How an organization like the Big TwelveConference, which is you know, you
got you got to make the money, right, you have to and maybe
(37:28):
while we got our contracts, sowe're good. But how with all the
hoopla of the Pac twelve teams goinginto the Big twelve, the interests they're
trying to generate in that the waypeople are talking about what the basketball conference
is going to be like with Arizonajoining joining up with Kansas and Iowa State
(37:49):
and Baylor and Houston and Texas Tech, and so they make a schedule.
It's the first schedule, the firstyear of the expanded Big Twelve Conference,
and nobody over there thought maybe, just maybe Kansas and Arizona should play twice.
Because the schedule comes out they playonce it's it's in Kansas. Even
(38:09):
if that game was here and andthey want to, I'd still be pissed
off. How do you not Howdoes nobody think maybe these two teams should
play twice? And I brought Idon't disagree with you because that's the first
thing I looked at when I sawthe schedule, and I'm thinking that's unfortunate.
And I'm thinking, when talking toyou, I'm thinking maybe it was
like an overcorrect undercurreer. It wasjust a weird thing that they didn't want
(38:31):
to do that initially, which makesno sense, don't I don't know.
There's no explanation. These schedules aredone with the computer, right, they
put all they put well, theyput all the teams in and and you
know, it spits something out.And then what you do is you go
around and you kind of, youknow, fiddle to it. It make
make you can go out there andmake adjustments to it. Well, they're
(38:52):
maybe they shouldn't play twice. Imean, how nobody looked at this and
didn't say, you know what, guys, we need to fix it.
We need to fix Kansas in Arizona. You need to play two times.
For all the national attention it wouldget, for the excitement it would get
in both cities and the league asa whole to see these two teams,
you know, the only blue bloodthat you know that the Big twelve has
(39:14):
in Kansas and the near blue bloodthat Arizona is. And they didn't say
those two teams need to play.Wait, I said it. I said
it. I said it. Isaid it. Put this poster on the
side. I said it. Iknow you've said you've agreed with me.
I said it, but I don'tdisagree with you on this issue. On
(39:34):
this issue, it's a common it'sa very blatant mistake. I think.
I'm thinking people, even probably theBig twelve, were thinking, what Kansas
fan wants to play Arizona. Sure, okay, here there. They're happy
they get them, but they wantto see it. They want to players
on a twice, you know what, because they want to kick Arizona's asked
bice and say we're better than Thegood thing is we'll probably see him again
both again in the tournament. Inthe tournament, there's probably that. But
(39:55):
here's the deal. These things areusually on a two year rotating bas which
means that next year you're not gonnaplay Kansas twice either. You're gonna play
Kansas once in Tucson. So youmight want to say, who's coming,
Houston's coming, Baylor's coming. Ithink, well, here here, I
got it. No, I gotin front of me. Okay, so
(40:15):
so uh uh. Arizona's home opponentsare a s U, Baylor, b
y U, H Central Florida,Colorado, Houston, Iowa State TCU Texas
Tech, Utah. Then they goto a s U, go to Baylor,
go to b YU, go toCincinnati, go to Iowa State,
(40:37):
go to Kansas, Kansas State,Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and Virginia.
So the teams that they play twiceare A s U, Baylor,
b YU, Iowa State, UH, Texas Tech. And that's it,
Arizona State, Baylor, b YU, Iowa State, and Texas Tech.
(40:59):
Yeah. Five teams that you playedtwice. And that's great. Look,
there's a bunch of good games inthere, right Baylor home and Home.
That's a great one. You know, that's good. Iowa State, you
know that's a good one. I'mjust saying that the best one out there,
the best matchup of all the matchupsof all the teams is Kansas Arizona.
And nobody thought that they should playtwo times. Okay, well what
(41:22):
of these One of those times?I agree with you, Jay, one
of these times it happens, Steve, because you're right. I mean,
there's no like, there's there's noother side to this right side are and
just the day before yes start there. You got to get your tickets.
You gotta get your tickets because it'sgonna be a fantastic schedule. Well,
the fantastic can be removed from thatbecause it's not fantastic. It's gonna be
(41:43):
pretty good. And look in Narzona'salready got a great home schedule. Duke
is coming to town, right,So that's not the complaint. The complaint
is that, Yeah, the commonsense thing to do here would have been
to have these two teams play tothe twice the first time they're in the
league together. That's all I'm saying. You know, if you want to
say, if you want to say, Okay, you're only gonna play Baylor
once, but you're gonna play Kansastwy, nobody would complain about that,
(42:07):
you know. I mean, thereisn't a there isn't another side to this
argument. I'd love to hear whatsomebody tell me what happened? Why did
this happen? Right? In fact, maybe we try to get to a
beat writer from the Kansas area, think what are they thinking? Yeah,
and then you got crappy Arizona fansup at the Arizona fans saying, oh
they did that because Bill self doesn'want to players. Shut the hell up.
(42:30):
Bill self is not afraid of anybody. Don't tell me, don't tell
me you saw that. Yes,you're aware. Wow, No, that's
totally no. No, no sayingthat saying that, we know there's fans,
not the people I don't know didn'tsay that. They said, I
know there's people out there saying that, speculating. I'm no, Steve,
(42:50):
come on, no doubt there's theirs. There's Arizona fans out there saying,
you know how I feel about that. You're right, but I haven't heard
it yet. In fact, Idid see it once. They did see
it as a reply when the firstthe first tweet that came out, John
rothste I think was one who tweetedthat said this is who you're playing.
Somewhere in that threat, somebody said, Bill Soelf's afraid to play Arizona.
(43:10):
Come on, shut up. Yeah, now we've given one more opportunity of
Arizona fans. It looked like dumbasses. Well that's not on you,
it's on them, I know,Steve. But we're connected to that.
At least I am right. Youare, you know, And I just
watch you know, I watched.I told you Jay, they're gonna come
out from the woodwork, but they'renot afraid. Yeah, that's the one
(43:32):
thing. It's gonna be a funseason. But without Kansas here, it's
not gonna be as fun. Yeah. You know, look, playing baby
b y you two times makes allthe sense of the world, all right,
is you twice twice? You haveto you have to play your arrival,
you know, two times. Houston'scoming. Houston comes here. Yeah,
but Arizona doesn't go there. Arizonadoes have to go to West Virginia,
(43:55):
but they don't come here. Andthat's it's fine. All the rest
of it is fine. But justguys. Yeah, you know, Texas
Tech is home and home. Imean that's great, you know, and
like I said, there's some greatgames. I mean, look at the
home the home conference schedule includes as U, Baylor, b YU,
Houston, Iowa State, and TexasTech and Utah m hmm. Of all
(44:19):
fun games. You know how manytimes did we go to the arena?
God, it's Washington State tonight atnine o'clock, you know, right there
isn't There isn't a game here thatI'm gonna say. Man, I really
don't feel like going tonight. Thereisn't. Yeah, your TCU. Last
time I was wont to play TCU. So it was a war. So
(44:40):
Richard, why don't you just giveme a call, give me give us
a call. We got eight minutes. We have time if you're near a
phone. Richard just sent, uhsent a note. I think he called
yesterday, right, yes, yeah, college, because this is a good,
good note you sent me. Soyou know, all these games are
really good games. There's not athere's not a cal or an Oregon state
in there anyway where right, thisis gonna be fun. The good thing
(45:02):
is, I don't I don't wantto prematurely say this, but I don't
think there's gonna be nine o'clock gamesanymore. I sure hope not. You
know, well it could be ifit's like if you're playing like a su
or bling somebody in the same inthe same time zone. You know,
you could you could see that.So I don't know if Richard's gonna call
you know, five o'clock games.Yes, well that's so we have to
(45:22):
run from here. Yeah. Uhso Arizona is an outsider team coming in
and prepare for bias and bad calls. I agree with that one hundred percent.
Agree with that. Let's take thiscall. Hi, you're on the
air. And I and the ball. Hey are you guys talking about the
Kansas scheduling thing? Yes? Andyour and your email that you sent me.
Yes, Yes, that is bogus. Uh. I believe that's because
(45:44):
they're kind of treating Arizona as anoutsider. Uh. It's a little bit
of punish but for coming into theleague and we're not gonna call just roll
out the red carpet for you guysand come right down there with Tucson to
get beat. So, look, you guys are gonna have to earn your
chops. There's gonna be a littlebit of that. You're an outsider mentality,
you're enter little pers who have comeinto a new territory, and so
(46:07):
we're going to have to work youover a little bit. What do you
think it sounds kind of interesting?Well, I agree that like things like
in you know, media polls, you know picking you know, picking the
you know, the conference and stufflike that, I think there will be
a lot of that from the media. I'm not sure why the conference would
do that when their objective is toget eyes on the product. Right,
(46:31):
I agree, And what I thoughtit was a bad decision Jay, Right?
And what what what other game whatother matchup in the Big Twelve with
the new teams in it is goingto get more eyeballs on it than Kansas
and Arizona. I agree, Iagree, you know, so, uh,
this is what's going to happen.I think this still happen to other
(46:52):
teams who move to other conferences. They're going to get some bad calls against
them, I think to be somebias until they sort of establish themselves in
the conference. Well, so they'rethere, they're going to have a tough
time getting calls here too, thoughthey always have. So that's that's a
trade off. I'm okay with that. That's it's always been like that,
(47:13):
you know, whether you're in theconference or not. Make sure in Oklahoma
we were fair on the call.Okay, what we believe in equity as
long as we won the game.Sounds god. You know, we're the
only team that had a five foottall hump in the middle of the field.
(47:35):
We're going offense was always running downhill. Thank you, Richard,
Richard, I appreciated. He's gotsome points there. Yeah, but again,
Steve, if if in fact theBig Twelve is doing that, then
they're just stupid and I can't believethat they're really that. Well, well,
no, so you talked about thatabove them being stupid, but you
(47:55):
figured you were done with it afteryou left the PAC twelve. You did
right. Like I said, thisis something that you can see the PAC
twelve doing. Just some nobody withthe you know, the brain matter to
say don't do this, you know, don't do that. Ah God,
I am okay, I'll be fine. I'm just I guess what bugs me
(48:16):
most, Steve, is that nobodysaw this, Yeah, or somebody didn't
see that. Somebody didn't see itand do something about it. Well,
I didn't see this coming, that'sfor sure, because I thought, for
sure, if you got too money, go buy tickets down because there's gonna
be a lot of Houston's coming.Yeah, it worries me. It worries
me that this conference might be runas bad as the pack as the PAC
(48:42):
twelve. Well, on stuff likethis, you're not going to get it
every way you want it. ButI'm not saying that this is a This
is a no brainer. They droppeda total no brain. And it bothers
me that coming right out of thebox, they spit this out as a
complete no brainer and screwed up likethat. I think that would be one
of the biggest questions asked during conferenceduring the media day. Absolutely, you
(49:07):
know somebody's going to ask that question. D Kansas Arizona. What the hell
were you guys doing? That's howthey need to ask it, just like
that, Yo, dude, whatGod? What the f Why Kansas in
Arizona? Only plane once? That'show needs to be asked. Brian Peterson
would do that. No, bruceWood, Brucewood, Brucewood, Brian,
(49:30):
he said, you know, wellhe is, he'd know, he'd him
and him. No, we needto have an F bomb in it.
No, Yeah, Brian wouldn't dothat. I don't know who wouldn't Snobody,
we know, there's never that wewould know. You know, the
guy would do well, he's inthe uk LA now. I don't know
who would in our group, nowhere too nice. Yeah, they wouldn't
do it there too. Nice Brucewould kind of got to kind of feel
like they wanted to do it,but you wouldn't do it. You gotta
(49:52):
you got there's gotta be a codeword for them. I would do the
problem by myself if I were bymyself asking the question and not on the
podium right on the because it's I'mnot JJ Reddick, I haven't realized,
but not in at at the podium, it just god, what what the
heck? Were you thinking? Whatthe hell? Guys, this is not
(50:13):
rocket science? No, no,no no, And you think, hey,
how can we maximize this schedule? How can we maximize this season?
Home at home right away, immediatelyimmediately? How do you draw attention to
the conference? You draw attention tothe conference by having these two teams play
each other, and they maybe justbe trying to say, well, you
know what, guys, we knowyou're really good, but you know,
(50:34):
we got some pretty good teams alreadyin the league. To be fair,
you know, Iowa State's really good, Baylor's really good. You're just one
of the guys, so we're notgoing to treat you special, if you
know. But nonetheless, it's afirst year. You only get this shot
one time, right, first impression, first, you know what time?
And now it's like they let theylet it go by, and they just
again I think they I think theyput it into a computer and spit this
(50:55):
out and somebody said get it upthere, and that's what they did.
Okay, that's cool. Oh soyou are you done? You've done your
heart pressure? Deep breath, yeah, heart pressure. Okay. We got
a lot of bricking news, Imean crazy bricking news. We took a
couple of things from you. That'sright, you'll be fine. There's a
lot of some point at you, babe that we haven't talked about the draft
(51:15):
to steal available to you. Anduh with the people getting drunk. He
has already switched over to the Bravesgear. Yeah, you did the matter.
Baseball stuff has been tossed aside.I got the blue shirt. Yeah,
but it's not. It's just ablue T shirt. It's not.
It doesn't say Mavericks Braves doing.Okay. Lost the White Sox today.
(51:37):
One nothing. They lost to theWhite Sock that the Dodgers. The Dodgers
get pissed them off. The Dodgerspissed off the White Sox. Dodgers to
the White Sox three three games ina row. My dude, my dude,
my picture threw a shut out yourrookie deleet game. Shut out the
rookie the first ones. It's liketwelve, it's been some ridiculous number.
(51:58):
The first complete game, shut upa Dodger pitcher in like years. I'm
sorry, he couldn't stop talking aboutthe Dodgers. Gavin Stone, Okay,
let's get out of his Dodger talk. All right, let's get that guy
to here. We're gonna come back. We've got breaking Is at the top,
and then Laman Huntley. We're gonnatalk some football because I'm sick of
talking Big twelve basketball already. Sowe'll be right back. Stick around,
