fifty eight.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Hey, welcome back to WY on the Ball here on
Fox Sports fourteen fifteen. I'm Steve, You're Eric, and now
we have Ray with breaking news.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
This is I on the Ball, Breaking news on Fox
Sports fourteen.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Fifty Middle of the week stuff in the middle of summer.
Speaker 4 (00:29):
And eleven to day broke the record. I can do snong.
Speaker 5 (00:33):
Get Yeah, you know, that's always what surprised me when
I moved here is like, how are their heat waves
in the desert.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
It's already hot? Like this doesn't make sense, Like you
know what I.
Speaker 6 (00:42):
Mean, it's under bake right now. We're just making this
maybe Raisman outside it's not too loll Yeah, that is
a profound Yeah you there too, jumping the pool.
Speaker 5 (00:53):
Yeah, I'm trying to starting off with the Summer League.
Had a couple Arizona guy's playing yesterday. Carter Bryant did
it do two great two for eight, two for seven
from three uh one, three for four from the line.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
So that's not too bad. But in twenty five minutes
nine points. You want to see nine points and what
the else did he do? He had three rebounds.
Speaker 6 (01:19):
Yeah, and I'm not surprised.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
I'm not surprised because one he's whatever, he's nineteen, and
everyone talks, Oh, he's got potential and we all know that, right,
but he's gonna be a project. We'll see him up
and down. I think a lot.
Speaker 6 (01:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
Yeah, the league is different.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
I mean, and it's not forgiving too, No, No, it's
And I said this when Stanley Johnson left in twenty sixteen,
whatevery one that said he's leaving. And I think that
that Sean Miller with think me, like, that's a great
question that was said. It's a man's league, whether you're eighteen,
nineteen twelve, whatever, guess what you're there now you better
(01:57):
be a man.
Speaker 6 (01:58):
Yeah, you're getting paid with lots of money. We saw
through the playoffs. Everyone can shoot. It's a it's a
it's a shining can shoot shot. And if you have
two for seven, two for eight nights consistently, you're gonna
gonna be eight nine spots on the porch. Sure. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:14):
Also yesterday Pela Larson actually had a really good game.
He I think he was the leader for the heat.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
He had.
Speaker 3 (02:23):
Oh no, he wasn't. He was off by one.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
Uh he had fifteen though Key Shot Johnson also had
fifteen points. Pel Larson on five and ten shooting, Key
Shot on six of nine shooting. Pello went one for three,
Key Shot two for five from three and then I
don't know.
Speaker 6 (02:41):
I don't know if I want shooting the three he made.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Yeah, I don't know if I do either, But I
mean he made.
Speaker 4 (02:47):
A couple any o Marbolo appearances in that one.
Speaker 3 (02:50):
I yes, he two for two.
Speaker 6 (02:55):
One that's not for the free throw line?
Speaker 5 (02:57):
What Yeah, as I say, one for two for the
free throw But yeah, five points at eleven minutes.
Speaker 4 (03:02):
That's good. Good for is it one of the great
guys in the pastor here?
Speaker 7 (03:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (03:05):
So the all of those guys, no pell no problem.
Key Shot a nice guy.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
Yeah, too bad they didn't get Key Shot for another year.
I really like watching him.
Speaker 5 (03:14):
He was one of those energy guys keeping it going
with the Wildcats in the league. DeAndre Ayton was had
his introductory prest conference today for the Los Angeles Lakers. Really,
the big quote that came out was that he felt
like it was like a video game or like once
(03:34):
in a lifetime kind of thing to be able to
play with Luka Doncic.
Speaker 6 (03:37):
Okay, now now we'll see what happens. I thought he
got a bad rap. I think really, I do, like,
at what point? What point with the Suns, Like I
think he listen, I mean when he was bad and
I'm using air quotes right now for them he was
still ten and twelve a night like which in the
NBA twelve rebounds good like, Yeah, I mean he did.
Speaker 4 (03:59):
He has some monster games. The numbers were not bad.
The numbers were.
Speaker 6 (04:03):
Very average, Like they were above average for an NBA center,
So number one, PA.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
But your Devil's advocate you you're in the TV business.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
You were in the TV business?
Speaker 8 (04:15):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (04:15):
Did you not? You work more than here?
Speaker 6 (04:17):
Right? Did you work somewhere else as well?
Speaker 2 (04:19):
And personalities are in the TV business with that little
red light of influence.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
Did you ever work for good people?
Speaker 9 (04:26):
Uh?
Speaker 6 (04:27):
Uh? I can say good people at what they did,
but just bad people? Yeah? Yeah, Now it's at the
knock against him, and I wholeheartedly curious, right he's not,
I mean, but the same thing that they say about
Devin Booker, like it's a video game fiend and he
just plays video games eighteen hours a day and he
doesn't do the work. I mean, I think that has
(04:48):
hurt eight And let me qualify. I thought Aton got
a bad rap for he put up very savage to
maybe a little bit above average center numbers than the NBA. Now,
he could be really, really good, right, and he chooses
not to be which is I think the point you're
making that.
Speaker 4 (05:06):
Yes, and I think that could be changed.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Yeah, I mean you have to change your reputation however
you are who you are.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
Yeah, it would be a fantastic story. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (05:16):
I mean I think when I say I got a
bad rap, like the Suns tried to replace him, and
they went from they did you know thirteen and eighteen
and fifteen to in fifteen and twelve a game to six,
six and five like and sons of technical fouls and
like that really hurt them.
Speaker 2 (05:33):
And now they're still searching for another center. So two
things can be correct at the same time. Yeah, your point, Yeah,
and I think my point agreed.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (05:41):
I think I wholeh hardly agree with your point. He's
good in the NBA, he could have been great, and
he's not choosing to be great. He's not doing the work.
He's not being he's not doing what it takes as
an athlete to reach that next level. So yeah, I
whole hardly agree with that. I thought just from the Suns,
I thought he got a bit of a bad rap.
Now listen, if you're gonna be number one, and you
want to be number one, you better live up to it. Right,
(06:03):
he's not.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
But you went to the Suns and that's where you stopped.
He went to Portland. They couldn't wait to get rid
of them. Yeah, So you know, sometimes sometimes if I
were h well sometimes if I've been married five times,
guess what, I'm probably the problem.
Speaker 6 (06:26):
You know what I'm saying. Yeah, No, listen, the guy's
got a ton of baggage. But I think to your point,
if he's ever going to have a chance to be successful,
it's around people who put up numbers like Lebron. But
on the reverse side of that coin, Lucas got a
little bit of that same. Sure, Like sure, Lucas an
unbelievable generational talent, but you see him having beers in
(06:47):
the hallways and like he's not, well he's not.
Speaker 4 (06:49):
You don't see pictures of extra time with Luca in
the gym.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
Well, well you've coached yea, So I'm sure you haven't
coached all the all the quality players. But there's some
guys that just know how to play and are very good,
and you say, go and have your beer, but show
up and do what you do.
Speaker 4 (07:07):
Yeah, it's like Luca.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
I don't know what he wastes, but I'll take three
hundred pound Luca over a lot of people who can't.
Speaker 6 (07:13):
Play, because when it comes time to do the work, yeah,
he's like he's ready to do it. In my run,
because you've coached, especially in soccer, because like it's such
a demanding sport physically, Like the kind of my favorite
guy ever coached at Arizona, guy named Kuri Kyle had
played you know, high junior college and had some looks
(07:34):
from BYU, tremendous young athlete. But there's a butt. Okay,
here's no not the butt old. The butt was like
his body was a little worn down. That's why he
didn't really go on to play. Sure, so the club
level of Arizona was great for him, and he was
tremendously hard worker, but I would give him a day
off of practice every week, and my other guys hated it.
(07:55):
They're They're like, why does he get a day off?
And I was like, because the other four days he
outworks every one of you by that's a good reason.
Like and it's like, but he needs a day off,
And so yes, to your point, if the dude performs
when he's asked to perform, you can make exceptions. Has
not earned that by any stretch, because that's exactly the
(08:17):
point is exactly Yeah, and you have to earn that, right,
You've got to earn that from your coach. You got
to earn that from your and you know, and his
teammates have to understand that. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (08:26):
I mean, what was it in in uh.
Speaker 6 (08:29):
In Dallas when he walked by and I'm blinking on
the GM's name, or even when he walked by and
he took the beer from him. He was in the
Nico was in the hallway and had a beer. I
think it was the GM or maybe it was I
don't know. One of them walked by and took the
beer out of his hands and just kept walking. He
was angry.
Speaker 4 (08:48):
It was just.
Speaker 6 (08:52):
Yeah, you were probably working at the time.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
Andre. Would you know where I'm going to go with this?
Speaker 2 (08:58):
With the phone in the in the they were going
to come out to the to the game in Staples.
I think it was Yeah or whoever there was, and
he was on the cell phone, you know, and we're thinking, what.
Speaker 6 (09:09):
Are you doing? Yeah, I'm sorry, do you not have
you met Ludelson? I don't know if you're familiar. Like
one of my favorite Loot stories and well, sorry, we're
really we're really derailing your breaking. There is.
Speaker 4 (09:21):
The headband story. Yeah, where they all came out.
Speaker 6 (09:26):
I don't know if you remember this, like they was
you went around, but a couple of Hassan Adams and
they wore a headband and there weren't many guys. There
was like maybe a guy, and they got away with
doing it that it was actually first sweat at that time,
like because the san didn't have the most hair. And
(09:46):
then they came out. Yeah, they went back in. They
didn't have him on the warm ups. They do their
warm up, they you know how they go back in
with about six minutes on the clock and then they
come back out. They all come back out wearing white
head bands, like snow white head bands, and they wore
them the whole game and we played horribly. And I
think Loot's opening or maybe they even were the whole game.
Speaker 4 (10:06):
Took them out at half time.
Speaker 6 (10:08):
Go ahead, like Lut's opening quote and our press conference,
he walks in and he goes safe to say, you'll
never see the head bands again. Compress the rains, press
the brains. It was just one of those like all right,
good try, but no those are Josh pastor creation.
Speaker 5 (10:23):
So he's good to hear some lore of Arizona paste.
One thing about eight and two, though, I feel like
there's a lot more distractions in La the Portland.
Speaker 4 (10:31):
Yeah, never been to Portland, but I have. I've been
to both, and you are spot on, my friend.
Speaker 6 (10:37):
Well let me say this.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
Can know you have Luca and you have the guy
get grabbing you by the lapel saying don't screw this.
Speaker 6 (10:46):
I mean Lebron expects it from his teammates, like and
so that's what I think is going to be an
interesting experiment is Yeah, I think eighton and I hope
somebody in his camp got in his ear and said,
if you're going to make this move, you better be
ready to make this move because if you don't reform
to your point, Steve, your career is done. Like you
get ready to go, no one, get ready to go
(11:07):
be a star in Germany. Like, but the challenge I
think with eight and some of these other guys is
we've been around these guys so much, we're used to it.
Seven to one is a giant, like just in the
public built. Yeah, and he's like he's always been a
physical specimen. I mean, like got that guy can't go
anywhere like he's seven to one in a fit like
(11:29):
three percent body, I'll give you, I'll give you another.
When did you start working here in two thousand and one?
Two thousand and one, okay, so uh two thousand and one.
Long gone was Brian Williams. And he was he was.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
Huge, phenomenal player, athletic as all hell, one of the
best ones ever here. But he was big and he played,
but he didn't love the sport.
Speaker 7 (11:50):
No.
Speaker 6 (11:51):
Remember he sat out his senior game. He had to
set out the first half because he got suspended for
going out our breaking one of loose team rules.
Speaker 4 (11:58):
Here's my Brian was his.
Speaker 6 (12:00):
Dad saying the national anthem that game, and Brian went
out and like tackled him like and you know like
in lout, especially lout like the national anthem line. There
wasn't smiling like you see there's barely even swaying. It
was like standard attention. And then we go to the
bench and we're like, it's go time. Brian Williams, who
eventually became Bison daile his dad saying in national anthem,
(12:20):
and he ran to mid court and tackled his dad
like laughing and kidding, and he was suspended for the
first half of that game. And so there was a
lot of exactly what you're saying of like this kid's
a night here for it, Like.
Speaker 4 (12:32):
He's like he was a fantastic player.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
But you know, you know, those guys are just they're
so talented, they just kind of reeves is kind of goofy.
Speaker 6 (12:39):
Yeah, I had a nice run with it. Yeah, I
mean Williams had a nice run with the Bulls, and yeah,
I mean a lot of other teams. Yeah, okay, are
we done?
Speaker 4 (12:48):
Yeah, I'll hit the big ones.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
Uh.
Speaker 5 (12:52):
Diamondbacks lost yesterday to the Padres one to zero. Got
a the third game tonight. H I love this is
Jay coming in on Friday. Baby Dodgers on a six
game losing streak. If you ask me again, is jac coming?
(13:13):
Wimbledon finals are set with center against Yokovic. I'm really
excited for that. And then Alcaraz versus Fritz and there's
a personal one PSG beat Real Madrid Ford to zero
beat down, Yeah, with three goals in the first twenty
four minutes to set up the FIFA Club World Championship
against Chelsea on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Well, we talked about this Monday, mister Eric. We'll talk
about it after we get to hold. Just your thoughts
on the Mexico USA soccer, Yeah, I mean, I think
that team overperformed. On the US side.
Speaker 6 (13:47):
I think there's there's some scary moments ahead. The I
call it the dark cloud silver lining. Dark cloud is
you got none of our players have played together in
the last year. Yeah, and you're going into the most
important tournament maybe in US history since ninety four when
we hosted the Cup like you're playing. You open it
so far in LA like and you're gonna have a
(14:08):
team that's played together twice two matches. So that's the
dark cloud silver lining. They all played together in our
World Cup before, so they have some experience, they have
some some I guess chemistry, and Mexico ran out a
great team, you know, I mean the goal scorers were
Fulham's top goal scorer and west Ham's captain. So it's
(14:28):
not like you lost to Mexico scrubs like we had.
Of that team, I would say of our entire US team,
three guys, four guys make the World.
Speaker 4 (14:38):
Cup team, So it's not a surprise to you.
Speaker 7 (14:40):
No.
Speaker 4 (14:40):
I thought they overperformed to get to the final. That's
what said. Yeah, okay, we.
Speaker 6 (14:45):
Got to go.
Speaker 4 (14:46):
We didn't get ahold of the hold in about four minutes. Yep,
sorry to that caller.
Speaker 3 (14:49):

Hold how you doing very great?
Speaker 14 (20:23):
See thanks for having me out.
Speaker 2 (20:24):
Yeah, of course, as always we want some insider stuff
from you. At a issue heavy used the head that
wears the crown. What do you think they're going to
do this year?
Speaker 14 (20:34):
Yeah, you know, on the one hand, there's no doubt
that despite being the reigning Big twelve champs. I think,
you know, as is defecate a team that's going to
get the a game of every Big twelve opponent it's
going to face this year. But even though there was
not a Big twelve media pre season poll, I guess
the Sun Devils just broke the system after getting picked
(20:58):
in sixteen the last place and finishing at first and
maybe the conference said Okay, you know, we got the message,
we're not going to do it again this year. But
I just feel that even if there was such a poll,
I don't know if a SU would be anywhere close
to being a consensus repeat champions, maybe not even not
getting the most first place votes to begin with. So
(21:21):
I think that you know, on the one hand, even
though it's a team that everybody's going to be gunning for,
I think that you know rightfully or not, And time
will tell that. The absence of that cams Kataboo is
obviously not with the New York Giants is one factor
that many think would really hinder the ACU offense quite
a bit. I mean, I have a different opinion on that,
(21:44):
And I also think that in some sense, not enough
people probably pay attention to an ASU defense who lost
only one starter. Don't get me wrong, Shamari Simmons, the
nickelback from last year, is an outstanding player, arguably the
team MVP. But still, when you have ten starters returning
on that side of the ball, and not only that,
but most of the too deep position by position also
(22:07):
returning players, I think this ASU defense is going to
be in a strong unit and compliment whatever deficiencies this
ACU offense is going to display without Scalabalo, and again,
in my opinion, I don't think the deficiencies are going
to be that grave for ASU not to have a
very good chance on repeating.
Speaker 6 (22:28):
You know, you mentioned the too deep and I think
that's so powerful and you're spot on, just there's no
sub super experience right when you talk about that many
guys who played in that many big, big, big games.
One of the things I really admire about Coach Dillingham,
even from down here in Tucson where we're not allowed
to say this too loud, is he's just built an
excellent culture of winning and guys are ready to play
(22:51):
and want to play, and you get to see that,
you know, first handed, a lot of probably practices. Has
that just really permeated that whole program. And that's why
maybe Scataboobs as Scataboob's absence isn't going to be that hindering.
Is its next man up and we're ready to win
no matter what.
Speaker 14 (23:10):
Yeah, but don't get me wrong. I mean you still
need to have talent, and I think, as to your point,
does have a lot of talent because there is so
much returning talent from twenty twenty four. I think the
numbers bear out to have just about eighty percent of
the production on each side of the ball returning to
t MP this year. So to your point, yes, there
(23:32):
is no sub substitute experience. And even though again you're
losing key players you know, your team MVP in incam
Scatabooy in your defensive end being Shamari Simmons, there's so
much returning that I don't think there's going to be
some kind of you know, seam not haven't seamless transition
that's really going to set this team back. But to
(23:53):
your point of the team culture, yes, I think it's
something that Kenny Dillingham does take a lot of pride in.
I think it's trans conspiracy and honesty in probably the
most jaded age of college football that we've ever seen.
You know, nil that even though after the house settlement, etc.
Scenes to still have the potency to be very much
(24:17):
out of control. You know, transferportal, I mean, maybe does
a shrink to one window instead of having a winter
in the spring one. But that's also I think one
aspect that really affected college football, in college sports for
that matter, quite a bit, and I think a lot
of coaches, a lot of programs did not know how
to handle that. And Kenny Dillingham said it best in
(24:39):
yesterday's first day of Big twelve media days that he's
not concerned about recruiting rankings, not even concerned about transfer
portal rankings. He's concerned about retention. If you have good players,
make sure you retain them. And also on that note,
if you have a good coaching staff, make sure you
retain them. ASU did not lose even one assistant from
(25:01):
the from last year. So I think when you build
that culture, you know you can use whatever cliches that
you wanted. Maybe some folks are going to roll their
eyes when they hear how great and dandy the culture
is in MP, But the proof is in the pudding.
You lost nobody from the coaching staff, eighty percent of
the production returning both on offense and defense. If that's
(25:22):
not a sign of a very strong culture and one
that's conduced to the success, I don't know what it is.
Speaker 2 (25:27):
So you've been there for a long time, obviously you
covered this, doing this for a long time. How is
the nil out there? It's you have the songs, you
have the Cardinals, you have you know, hockey's gone, but
you have the Diamondbacks now and and historically I've been
here a long time and you know that kind of
issue has kind of been brushed aside because of them,
or have they? Are they finding the right people to
(25:49):
help with the NIL and now that it's shared revenue
and all that stuff, how is it going?
Speaker 14 (25:55):
Well, Look, I mean, I'm not going to sit there
and tell you that that the NIL at ASU is
one of the best the Big twelve, especially when you
see what team like Texas Tech is doing where it
seems like the NIL is just you know, some kind
of never ending fountain of wealth over there, and the
folks that didn't want to contribute to NIL in Lubbock
(26:16):
pitched in and build a two hundred and fifty million
dollar facility there in Lubbock. So, you know, I don't
think a SU is a program that can compete, and
maybe we'll ever compete with a program like Texas Tech,
but I think in terms of NIL funds, they're definitely
middle of the road. You know, not to get too
much into the weeds over here, but just because the
AESU has the most sports of any Big twelve team member.
(26:43):
At the twenty six they did expand the max scholarships
on all sports, so not only one hundred and five
scholarships in football, but also thirty four scholarships in baseball.
You know, for example, that's why their revenue, sure pool
Pool is going to be smaller compared to a lot
(27:03):
of other teams in the Big twelve. And it's going
to be closer to eighteen million rather than being closer
to twenty million. Now that is revenue share that is
separate from nil. But I think we're just going to
look at the grand scheme of things, how much players
can earn an a SU versus some not all, but
some Big twelve schools. I think that a SU is
able to compete, but I wouldn't I wouldn't say that
(27:25):
it's able to top to a Texas Tag and maybe
some other teams in the Big twelve. So you know,
they're in a good spot. You know, could be better,
definitely could be much much worse. But what you mentioned, Steve,
concerning about the ASU grabbing the attention to the valley
with having three major sports, I mean, up until six
or so months ago was a four major sports. You know,
(27:46):
Kenny Dillingham, who grew up in the valley, said that
the Phoenix metropolitan is a front runner town. So yeah,
you got you got the Diebacks, that got the Cardinals.
But right now, Arizona State is by far the hottest
team in the valley it comes to any sports franchise.
So as long as ASU can continue and sustain that success,
(28:07):
then I don't think a lot of folks are going
to be, you know, really ishing to choose to spend
their sports dollars elsewhere over ASU. Obviously, being a college
sport is also more affordable than the pro sports, So
you know, Kenny Dillingham always knew that if you build it,
they'll come. And I think with the success that ASU
(28:27):
has had last year, having just about I believe seventy
five hundred new season ticket holders, I think that the
ASU can continue to capture the imagination of the valley.
And again, it's not like they don't have a stiff
competition from three pro sports franchises. But as long as
the SE is producing at the level that they did
(28:48):
in twenty twenty four, I don't think support is going
to be any issue that's really going to hold this
team back.
Speaker 6 (28:55):
Oh shifting gears just to touch. You know, ASU is
seen as a winning program right now, in one of
the top programs out there, you know, in.
Speaker 4 (29:03):
A video game world.
Speaker 6 (29:04):
All the numbers have been released this week about you
know their ratings, and you know Levy and Tyson certainly
are worthy of that hype. I'm gonna ask what might
be a weird question. Is there a bit of a
chip on the shoulder for a team that's expected to
have so much like you got a first round by.
We earned a first round by last year, but really
we're a non targeting call and a fourth down stop
(29:26):
away from having a much bigger season year Around that program,
is there a feeling of a little bit of a
chip on the shoulder of like, man, we have a
bit of a sour taste. I know the fan base
is excited and it should be, but within the program,
is there a bit of a sour like we want
to take that next step?
Speaker 14 (29:45):
You absolutely hit the nail on the head. I mean
that heartbreaking loss to Texas in the Peach Bowl, you know,
in that non targeting call that definitely could result that
it could have resulted in as you getting the Longhorns
and advancing the semifinals of the cosgemer Pool Playoffs. Yes,
it absolutely sticks in their crass. I mean they said
it way before media day yesterday, but definitely repeated that yesterday. Now,
(30:09):
I was very careful, and I think a lot of
other local beer writers were doing the same, not to
ask for the empties time. What are you guys going
to do without that? With it without camskataboo. So just
so the non local media that I've been mentioning is
quite a bit yesterday and probably for the preceding seven months.
That is another chip on the shoulder. That's that's building
(30:30):
on a issue. And again, even if there was a
media preseason poll, I don't know if you actually gets
the most from the first place votes out there. I
think that Texas Tech is really a Darling favorite for
the Big twelve, and Kenny Dillingham himself said they're an absolutely,
very very strong contender to be in that championship game.
(30:51):
I think I was stayed in Kansas State some other
teams that have been been mentioned as very very legit contenders.
Some people think that You is going to resurrect after
having a very struggle of a campaign in twenty twenty four.
So you know. On the one hand, like I said, definitely,
everybody's gonna be gunning at a SUS there running Big
(31:12):
twelve champs. But I just I don't think they're getting,
you know, a level of respect. Let's say Alabama would
have you know back in the day that nobody even
dares question their dominance in the conference.
Speaker 4 (31:25):
So as long as.
Speaker 14 (31:27):
A s U is not considered to be this immovable object,
and a lot of people are questioning about the lack
of uh, you know, not having a great offense because
Camps Scataboo's not there, or just thinking that some of
the teams are able to overtake ASU even though player
to player they don't have a talent level that's exceedingly
(31:48):
better than the Sun Devil's ensure. I think the chip
on the shoulder definitely does exist for this team, and
I think it's important for a program my ASU to
have that chip on their shoulder because it seems like
whenever they come into the season with high expectations, just
like this year, sometimes they don't do well, but when
folks doubt them as a program, that's when they actually excel.
(32:10):
So I think Kenny Dillingham, somebody again born and raised
in the Valley, knows this program inside out. I think
he's gonna very much keep that chip on their shoulder
alive and huge, because I think that's going to be
not the only component for success, but I think one
that might have more significance of people thinking.
Speaker 6 (32:29):
Will We were just talking about that with expectations. We
looked at each other in.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
Touch because it applies here in basketball, same type of thing.
But let me ask you. You see the schedule, probably
more than you'd like to. What's the over under win wins,
maybe draft Kings or whatever, and will they go over that?
Speaker 6 (32:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 14 (32:47):
I believe the over under that I saw is eight
and a half. I don't think any team in the
Big twelve was receiving a higher over under. So again,
those teams I mentioned in Kansas State Texas Tech, I
think also did have of eight and a half over under.
I like to ask you for the over I think
the fact that they have not six but seven home
(33:07):
games and this uh was obviously a field that they
did not lose any contest in twenty twenty four is
definitely going to help them. I know the fact that
they are going to host Texas Tech, They're they're in timp.
That's something that's going to be really really really important.
You know the fact that they don't face the contender
(33:29):
like like Kansas State, that's something that can help them.
I mean, sure, they got to travel to Iowa State
in early November. The weather can already start being somewhat
icy over there, so you know that, you know, could
be could be one pitfall, you.
Speaker 6 (33:44):
Know, Utah.
Speaker 14 (33:45):
As I mentioned, it's one thing that I that I
personally can't figure out. It seems like a lot of
folks think that, you know, they can be a strong contender,
which to me, they have a lot of tough questions
at quarterback, even with the transfer David dan Pierre from
New Mexico. But that is a team that a SC
is going to travel to on the road too. So
(34:07):
you know, I'm not saying it's an easy schedule, but
I don't think it's really all that daunting either. And again,
just having that one extra home game I think could
help a SU be over eight and a half wins,
And I think it's definitely going to register as the
disappointment if a SU at a minimum is not going
to be in the in the Big twelve Championship game again,
I think with everything they got returning on offensive defense,
(34:30):
there's no reason to now lower the bar for the Sunbeas.
Speaker 6 (34:34):
I just went on DraftKings and uh put a little
wager you're buying me dinner. I joke that I did
I didn't.
Speaker 4 (34:44):
Two teamer Arizona over.
Speaker 14 (34:48):
Well, hey, you know, I mean, you know, maybe Arizona
is a team that because they can actually do you know,
you know, do better this year. Obviously you guys father
for I got much, you know, much of the much
closer than I do. But uh, you know, I think
that you know, I maybe you have a Fans can
look at a s U and look at the first
year of Kenny Dillingham and compare that to Brennan and
(35:10):
the struggles that he had in that first season in Tucson,
and the second year sometimes does work out better when
the coaches you know the players better and vice versa.
So I wouldn't be surprised, and we're hoping I'm not
all that, but I don't think you have a you know,
(35:30):
going over is really just out of the question. And
as you guys know, even though you know, second year
for both programs with the Big Twelve, this conference is
so unpredictable, and not only because what he did last
last year, just overall so so predictable games are games
are razor thin in terms of the score. So, uh
you know this is really a conference that you should
(35:51):
expect the unexpected.
Speaker 1 (35:53):
Uh.
Speaker 14 (35:54):
So we'll see what twenty twenty five brings.
Speaker 2 (35:55):

Yeah?
Speaker 3 (40:47):
He did, dude, that's very nice. Oh, they're cool.
Speaker 6 (40:53):
The funny thing so like, Alrightley Chevrolet gifted us a
vehicle to you. They're letting us Lisa vehicle and it's
all you know, got Snoop dogg Arizla and I drive
it most of the time. And the disappointment on people's
faces when they see me and I'm like, come on,
did you really think Snoop is driving? I mean it's
(41:14):
a phenomenal car, it's an electric now yeah yeah, okay,
Well outside it's just funny, like you can see people
like look at the logo and then they get up
to me like wh wow. I'm like, no, I'm I'm
not him. He doesn't drive his own car. How cool?
Speaker 4 (41:33):
How cool was.
Speaker 2 (41:33):
It having him here? He was out and about. I
know he didn't talk to a lot of but how
cool was it?
Speaker 6 (41:40):
Amazing? I think I mentioned this last time I got
to visit here. You never know when you have a
big personality or a celebrity. You know, you've been around
so many athletes, you just never know what they're going
to be like behind closed doors. The nicest like humble,
it's nice, you know, the old cliche is nice to
the janitors.
Speaker 4 (41:57):
He is the CEO.
Speaker 6 (41:58):
Just a nice guy, like very friendly, like please and
thank you everywhere, like not demanding, Like he does have
a rider, but the stuff and his rider is silly. Sure,
it's like you can choose boxes and tropical skittles.
Speaker 4 (42:14):
You've gotta call Hello, you're on the air and nine
on the ball. Who's this Vic?
Speaker 6 (42:18):
What's up?
Speaker 14 (42:20):
So I got a disputure.
Speaker 19 (42:21):
Your guy, your guest from Phoenix, you just had on
So he said they returned eighty percent of their offense.
That guy Skataboo was their office and they don't return him.
And every time I watched him, it was him or nothing.
That Texas game, it was ninety percent Stataboo.
Speaker 4 (42:41):
Yeah, we were talking about that off the air.
Speaker 6 (42:43):
Vic.
Speaker 4 (42:44):
It's a it's a good point.
Speaker 6 (42:44):
We were talking about off the air, like statistically, yes,
eighty percent. But you're right, you know, Ray and I
were saying, like can you replace the heart though? Like
that guy was just a machine, you know, can you
replace that? I don't care if I'm bloody, I'm running
through a wall. You can't teach that, Like you know,
Scooby right is the most is the guy reminds me
of that year like.
Speaker 2 (43:06):
Football wise, basketball rice, it's Jason Terry in nineteen ninety
nine when he had to score twenty some points a
game and wheel that team to do well.
Speaker 4 (43:14):
Yeah, just showed up every day.
Speaker 6 (43:15):
Yeah, So I think it's it's a it's a great
point man Like statistics hard is not a statistics.
Speaker 4 (43:21):
Will is not a statistic I mean three.
Speaker 19 (43:24):
Yeah, there's just no way that And they might do well.
The quarterback I guess is pretty good, but there's no
way they replaced that guy. They're gonna they're gonna hit
it hard. It's gonna hit hard.
Speaker 4 (43:36):
Yeah, it's in. You know, our guests mentioned it.
Speaker 6 (43:39):
The Big twelve is a gauntlet like and you know,
I mean, you're really gonna have to look and go
how many first downs? Like not games did you win,
but how many first downs did Skataboo get? Just to
keep drives going, We'll keep the defense off my field.
Just stuff like that.
Speaker 2 (43:54):
Car I'll say this to both of you guys because
we've seen it and maybe I'm wrong. Uh, And sometimes
you have seasons that are just unexplainable good that you
just have magical years. I'm sure Arizona here with with
the Jed, I mean, come on, have do you not
changed the quarterback?
Speaker 4 (44:10):
Things don't happen.
Speaker 2 (44:12):
You're not doing that right, there's other magical ninety eight
things just happen.
Speaker 6 (44:16):
Ninety seconds runs into a bench and Ki goes into
the game.
Speaker 4 (44:19):
Of Colorad's just happened?
Speaker 2 (44:20):
And maybe that I'm not trying to poop poo the
issue season because you coach. I mean, I'm sure you've
gone through things like I can't believe this is happening.
Speaker 19 (44:29):
I've gone to the voodoo doll plenty of time.
Speaker 6 (44:33):
Yeah, I mean, big are your coach. I don't know
you personally, I agree with you. I think I think
what's going to be missing is is that that magic
that Yeah, magic is a great word, like yeah, I
mean like even Arizona's You're two years ago. You know
you went into every game where they played the next
ranked opponent, and you had some hope, but you know
(44:55):
internally you're like, I don't know if they can do
this again.
Speaker 2 (44:58):
Well, like jam they just kept doing you, Jason one
of those guys not Yeah, how's this gonna happen again?
Speaker 4 (45:03):
How how does that continue?
Speaker 6 (45:05):
And it does?
Speaker 9 (45:05):
It did?
Speaker 6 (45:06):
Yeah, I mean it's it's when you're relying on a
guy who went to Sacramento State, like scott Aboo did
they spent two years at Sacks State. You're like, and
now your your your hopes are on him to get
you to a national champion, our national semifinal, like col
like we know very well here in Tucson, losing a
piece or two can make a big deal.
Speaker 19 (45:27):
You guys. Ragees brought up the Dodgers and I what
happened to the one hundred and sixty two and zero season?
Speaker 6 (45:33):
I was gonna have right.
Speaker 19 (45:34):
I mean, you know, Freddy Mookie I told you yesterday, Steve,
I'd hate to be riding Mookie check right now because
I'd be throwing the pan against the wall.
Speaker 6 (45:44):
I mean, I've coached as well a little bit in
my career, and the first thing I always told my
teams is it's hard to win. Oh yeah, it's just
hard to win. Like it doesn't matter who you You
can be playing a JV team, you get like you're
not guaranteed.
Speaker 4 (45:56):
We've seen it. It's the beauty of sports.
Speaker 6 (45:57):
It's while we are all so hooked, is you gotta
go out there and you have to play.
Speaker 2 (46:01):
The funny thing about it that with both being coaches
and me writing about it and playing, Uh, there are
no answers when you lose. I mean, you have the answers,
but there's a lot more than just what you see.
Speaker 6 (46:11):
Yeah, I mean I think I mentioned this to you before, Steve.
Andy Lopez, that Arizona baseball coach and you know legend
in college baseball used to say and it's my favorite quote.
It's a game played by young people. Yeah, like you
can have the best play, You're gonna have great game plan,
you have everything in place, and it's just like maybe
that kid's girlfriend broke up with him, maybe he's homesick,
like exactly, it's a game played by young people.
Speaker 19 (46:33):
Well, you're not lying, so anyway, I just wanted to
throw that out there. Good good, Uh, good combo, guys,
thank a lot, great.
Speaker 4 (46:39):
Call out, VIC. He's accurate.
Speaker 2 (46:42):
Yeah, you're you're right because uh, in college specifically you
talk about the girlfriend. The one thing I've learned or
a few things to learned, one of them being you
can't know or tell the emotions of the kids at
the time. You have no idea how much emotion plays
in sports.
Speaker 6 (46:57):
Yeah, it's my biggest question mark fora this year is
he's had tamac on every team he's been on forever.
Speaker 4 (47:06):
What's it gonna be like?
Speaker 6 (47:08):
Like when I was in high school, most of my
best friends from sports were seniors and year ahead of me.
So my senior year and I was like, oh, your
senior is the best, Like for me, it's my junior
year because it was like all my buddies and then.
Speaker 4 (47:18):
Senior was great.
Speaker 6 (47:19):
It was fine. It was just like nothing bad at all.
It's just it's just different. Right, So how is Fafita
going to respond when he's not walking off the practice
field with t Mac every day.
Speaker 4 (47:29):
He's not, they're not walking the cars together, Like.
Speaker 2 (47:31):
Here's here's the thing. And and you you you played
your sports. I played mine and played his. Sometimes it
works out to be okay, yeah, and it could be
the opposite because here we are journalists, it's so called journalists.
We think we don't we don't know because we're not
in those shoes, right, but we think what's gonna happen?
Speaker 4 (47:50):
Sometimes it's just.
Speaker 6 (47:51):
The question I'm asking. I don't have the answer because
to me, that's the question is what is.
Speaker 4 (47:56):
Going to do?
Speaker 6 (47:56):
Because that's your job to ask that question.
Speaker 5 (47:58):
I think it'll be cool too, Like his brother's on
the team now, so it's like you know, maybe you know?
Speaker 6 (48:03):
Well, I mean, and that's why I give brnnon credit.
Like Salave is a great higher because it brings the
whole palm use and culture and all of that in.
And like what is he throwing to his brother? No better?
Speaker 4 (48:14):
I don't know. I watched CoA Pete jump a lot,
making the thro and get that thing. Yea and a
bun they sure they should, Yeah, bid him the tight end.
Speaker 6 (48:27):
I mean, Vic makes a great point, like you can
have everything right on the paper, and a SU certainly
looks like it. I mean, I we'll see.
Speaker 2 (48:34):
Yeah, sometimes you catch MATCHI in a bottle and it
happens and then the bottle gets lost.
Speaker 6 (48:38):
Yeah, I mean we it's it's interesting and nobody in
this town and probably up north and Tempete wants to
make this comparison.
Speaker 4 (48:45):
Ever, but we're on a very similar track. Rough year.
Nobody expect you to to do well.
Speaker 6 (48:50):
All of a sudden, you have a ten win, double
digit season, win big games, everyone's talking about you, and
you have a really rough year. Like there's there's a
very similar story, like a SU can change that narrator
this year, but like the trajectory is, there's some similarities there. Sure,
and only your laundry man would know how it went exactly.
Speaker 5 (49:10):
Yeah, new coach they had Dylan Hamley got I mean
everybody's I mean every like everybody on the media day
today talked about Daggi. Yeah, except for the defensive guys obviously,
But like they like they're like get in.
Speaker 3 (49:23):
Don't get me wrong.
Speaker 5 (49:24):
Obviously led Marshall to to championship, but you know still
got to.
Speaker 6 (49:28):
See, Yeah, you stopped players that fit that system and
then do well. I mean it's again, well, like I
think i'd try to be a realistic, Like I'm in
Arizona Homer all the way through, been season ticket older
since I was like six. The successful teams have not
been overpowering teams, aside from maybe that ninety four Festa Bowl,
(49:49):
Like the teams have been insert the right player here.
Speaker 4 (49:53):
Yeah, you're Matt Scott's your.
Speaker 6 (49:55):
BJ Dankers, you know, like, I mean, everybody still likes
we beat SU without throwing passing the second half, but yeah,
because you were running the right system like you just
you know, when you beat Oregon a couple of times,
like Shu, you should be being a fan. How disappointed
we gonna be? How disappointed were.
Speaker 4 (50:12):
You this past year?
Speaker 6 (50:14):
Yeah? Is rough, like because you you have your heart
into it, but it's but I think it's it's similar.
You know, you see this all over and I'll be quick,
but I think it's it's when you love anyone, right,
you just kind of expect your hopes to be crushed.
Speaker 4 (50:27):
It was ninety seven ninety eight.
Speaker 6 (50:29):
You mentioned earlier, like you come off winning it ninety
seven in storybook fashion, and in ninety eight you're like, wait,
we legitimately, Like we always think we're the best team
in the country, but like that team might have legitimately
been the best team in the country or one of
two or three.
Speaker 4 (50:43):
And last year you thought, all right, we return a lot.
Speaker 6 (50:45):
I think I wasn't as hurt because I knew what
losing Johnny Nansen and Bill Norton was going to be. Like,
like defense, especially in a new league, in this league,
is it's it's it's the most important piece. Like everyone has.
People can score, every team can score the football. It's
big to make stops.
Speaker 3 (51:04):
It's a stereotype of big toal defense.
Speaker 4 (51:06):
Right, Yeah, can you make a stop when you need to?
Speaker 6 (51:09):
You gotta go.
Speaker 4 (51:10):
Thanks Eric for showing up. Always find guys. Yeah we'll
have you.
Speaker 2 (51:13):
And again when my boy Blake can't show up, so
the next three out of four days you.
Speaker 4 (51:19):
Know his schedule. Thanks guys,
