This is I on the Black withSteve Rivera and Jay Gonzalez on Fox Sports
fourteen fifty powered by Nova Insurance Services. Make sure your most prized possessions katz
R two side and iHeart Radio StationThe Good Afternoon, everybody, welcome too.
On the ball here on Fox Sportsfourteen fifty. I'm Steve Rivera,
He's Jakins. Also got our guyJason in today on a Wednesday, Yes,

(00:27):
ump day, up day. Onlyone more day for Steve. Yes
on Friday, taking a long weekend, leaving me behind. Yes, you
have you a long weekend here,I gotta travel yesterday. Good afternoon,
everybody. A lot of things goingon. Exciting news on the baseball front.
Yeah, yeah, go ahead andtalk about it. Yeah. The
Wildcats baseball team. I pulled off. It was a nail bider of a

(00:49):
win. I got. I gotcaught up, and then I'm watching it
at home, and then I wentout to lunch. I was out with
my Wednesday crew. Were over atPostino on on Grant Road. And it's
it's not a sportspark kind of place, right, It's more of a kind
of a fun restaurant, people hangingout, having a good time. But
we've had we had like three phoneson the table, all had the game

(01:11):
on, and you'd have thought wewere Bob Dobbs or something. We're yelling
and we're clapping, and um,we're pissed off because they were. They
gave up a lead and then theywanted in a walk off bottom bottom of
the ninth inning. Um. Uhyou score, uh score run to to
win it. Um. One ofthe interesting thing UH stats on that was

(01:33):
Chris Barrazza relief picture for for Arizona, comes in, gets himself in trouble,
then gets out of trouble. Theyhad a first and third nobody out
in the top of the ninth, got out of it and then uh um.
Then they come up and win inthe bottom of the night. But
Chris Barrazza was on the losing endof two walkoffs at Oregon stage back to

(01:53):
back, so he was on themound for both of those and then he
gets a walk off. He getsa walk off today in a win puts
Arizona in the in the semi finalsof the tournament. If you believe Troy
Hutchinson, he thinks that they mightbe in the NC Double A tournament with
this win. I reserve my judgmentjudgment. A couple of stats on that.

(02:14):
Brian Peterson posted this that Arizona isnow forty eight in the RPI.
They're ahead of USC and ASU.They're nine and twelve. Record against Quad
one opponents is better than both ofthose schools, so they might they were
they were those two expected to getin. Well, those two were seeded
ahead of Arizona in the in thepactual, but not the NC Double.

(02:35):
There are other factors, I honestly, these are these guys are gonna have
the same trouble the women did.Yeah, because of other other factors.
I think I think they need onemore and that that one's gonna be hard
because they're guaranteed to be the lowestseed of the four teams and in the
semifinals, so they're probably gonna playStanford and that's gonna be a hard They
did give them a good series. It's yeah, you know, well exactly.

(03:00):
I mean, Oregon State was thenumber two seed and they beat him.
So you know, I'm not sayingit can't happen. It's just gonna
be hard, difficult, but they'vegot it, you know, they put
themselves. Look, they've done whatthey needed to do to put themselves in
position. Now they've got a chanceto get themselves even beyond then if they
beat Stanford, who the hell knowswhat, Now you can win the whole
Dame thing. So we'll see.But a huge win again, you know,

(03:23):
just one of those nail biting games. You know, they were down
four, Oregon State scored four inthe top of the first. Chase Davis
hit this home run. Steve, you know, I've been watching airs on
a baseball for a long time, forever and ever. I mean, Frank
ConA, Dave Stegman, hitters thathave come through that have just been incredible.
I don't remember a prettier swing thanChase David. Yeah, yeah,

(03:46):
I've seen him hit a few ballsnow, yeah, no question. You
know who I really like? Uhis the shortstop? Yeah, just a
defensive guy, but he can buthe can stick. He scored the winning
run, you know, he goton with a base hit. Um they
got, you know they got. They actually almost blew it. They had
first and third with with one out, and um and and uh, Chase

(04:10):
Davis. It's a hard ground ballto second base, and but it wasn't
a hard but it was like ashort liner, and so the runner on
third because it's kind of held upand hesitated. Then the guy one hopped
it and then he tried to goand they threw him out of home.
So that was two outs they hadfirst and second, and then then then
then they get the base hit bya Kiko Romero, the kid from CEO

(04:30):
gets a base hit up the middleto win it. Mclaurie scores. That
scores the winning run. But backto Chase Davis. He hit a home
run today. You don't normally fromthe outfield camera, guy hits you know,
guy hits a rocket. You alwayssee the ball off the bat right,
you see the trajectory of the ball. Chase Davis hit this so hard
you could not see the ball offthe bat. The ball was just gone.

(04:54):
Yeah, he's a tough he youhe does not get cheated on his
swing, does not. He doesnot hes. He's gonna make some money
in Major League. He's unbelievable swing. He's like Tiger when he goes up
and takes at it. Well.I, you know, earlier in the
day, just I came across thevideo of of Ken Griffy Junior. He

(05:14):
hit three homers in a game onthis day and whenever and his three swings.
I said, that looks like JaseDavis, you know, or Chase
Davis looks like Ken Griffy jus unbelievableleft hand swinging, beautiful natural swing.
We do. You're on the Rand I on the ball. How are
you guys? This is Gabriel callingfrom California. Hey, how are you

(05:36):
guys doing? Gabriel? Gabriel,Fine, let me let's let's first see
what you're gonna talk about, becauseI have some talking to you. Okay?
Cool? Um? So I thinkso um? This was reported today
that uh that it called you callthat a reporter from O calif Home who

(06:00):
works along the Oklahoma talks about basicallyreported on how Colorado is, um crazy
is almost not not necessarily necessary, almost going. Well, they're gonna be
Their decision about going into the BITtwelve is gonna happen soon. So I

(06:23):
saw a report, Yeah, Isaw a report like that yesterday where Arizona
was mentioned that they too want tojump. Obviously, M Gabriel, just
because you want to jump doesn't meanthey want to take you. But but
I saw the same report. Isaw some some preliminary reports yesterday and Arizona
was mentioned. But that doesn't shockyou, does it? Um? So

(06:45):
I don't know what's going on behindthe scenes. I'm not going to speculate
by just hope day Peki and PresidentRobbins have every have all their ducks in
a row and do and do alljust talking to their legals, defense were
not legal, defendious, every everything. I hope they have all their doc

(07:08):
mts cross and also uh and also, um, let me give you this
scenario. So when Arizona and Coloradoget them, when they decide to go
into the Big twelve, and thenand then a FU decides to stay in

(07:29):
the past twelve because of their wholebecause of the whole arrogance or stupidity,
and I think it's more stupidity. But can ken ken ken that happened?
And can a reason to go tothe Big twelve and then a SU can
stay because because they're not there?Very bright, I'm gonna say it can

(07:56):
technically happen. I doubt that thatwould happened. I doubt that the border
regions, which which has control overthis, would allow one to go without
the other. Um Can I saythis? Um? Well? In Oklahoma,
Oklahoma, left to going the SECand the Oklahoma State didn't didn't like

(08:20):
row Row Road, Oklahoma, Oklahoma. So I'm just very interested in in
BA Scen area. From from frommy experience with the Board of Regions and
no actually knowing some people on theBoard of Regions, I'm gonna say it's
highly unlikely, probably nine unlikely, that the Border regions would okay Arizona going

(08:48):
without Arizona State. And that's justthe way it's always been here. Way
back when Arizona and Arizona State wentinto the pack what became the PAC ten,
Arizona State did not want to goto the PAC ten. The Border
Regions said Arizona is going, andguess what you are too, and they
went kicking and screaming. Arizona Statewould still be in the Whack or the
Mountain West if it was up tothem. So just politically in this state,

(09:13):
it's different from Oklahoma, it's differentfrom Texas, that's different from anywhere
else. I don't believe that Arizonacan go to a conference without Arizona State.
So so if if, if,if Colorado go to the Big Twelve,
great let Colorado go to the BigTwelve. Who are they gonna go
with maybe nobody Arizona. I'm prettysure Arizona Arizona State are staying together.

(09:39):
Well, let's just see what happen, right, all right, and and
I'm looking at I'm looking at thearticle that have right, but hold on,
hold on, Gabriel, I'm lookingat the article that I think you
you were talking about it in theOklahoma It's a Big twelve source. So
again, everybody's got an agenda whenthey come out with stuff like this,

(10:01):
and so you know, maybe theBig twelve is trying to make something happen,
trying to get PAC twelve, youknow, schools to work against each
other, YadA, YadA, YadA. Again, I caution everybody, don't
believe anything until you see something signed. And that's that's basically all we can
do. It's gonna be all kindsof all kinds of speculation between now and

(10:22):
until a deal is done. Well, let me also say this, I
think Arizona's a deal. Why it'sbest for Arizona, right, not the
whole conscience. That's a there's noloyalty in the past. Well, that's
a that's I didn't see and yousee that they didn't have any law see
when they left. I think thatthat's a joke. Yeah. I think

(10:46):
Dave hen made that pretty clear thatthey were gonna do what's best for Arizona,
and some people took that to meanArizona jumping to the Big twelve.
I don't take that to mean anythingother than Arizona is going to get do
what's best for Arizona. Okay,Well, thank you you guys, you're
rock. Thank you Gabriel. Iwas gonna ask him, Uh, Gabriel,

(11:07):
where did you stand on the theTommy Lloyd situation? I think he
was critical of him early to say, like many others, like any other
that that said, you know whatabout what's going on with Paddick in the
streets, fire in the theater there, they's gonna be okay. They're turning
out to be okay. We'll probablyhave something in breaking news about another recruit
that could be coming here. Atleast time I was on a list.

(11:30):
So yeah, I mean it's noteven June, right, Relax exactly exactly.
You know now, you now yougot people talking about the lineup that
oh they got this, they gotthat that they didn't have before, and
they got like we're you know,go back to your basement base. Right.
Well, there was one today onFacebook that was very interesting talking about

(11:50):
Arizona. Some guy just randomly said, you know, all those guys can
shut up now, blah blah blah. Another guy came in, well,
now about his coaching. Now it'sgonna be you know, if it's not
one thing, it's the other wrong. You know, he could throw with
his right, but he can't heprotect it with his left. You know,
come on, really, really, you know, what about what about
that? What about that guy?Enough? I know guys, well again

(12:11):
getting back. You know, Arizonais such a it's a crazy thing watching
them play, because you know, they got up twelve to eight, they
were down eight to five. Isaw that. That's when I got up
twelve to eight, and you justknew got up twelve days Yeah, well
they had the league. Yeah, and you just knew four runs wasn't enough
and it wasn't and it wasn't OregonState game. They get they got up

(12:33):
there, tied the game, butthen Barazza came in and shut things down.
They're good, so good, goodon Chris Barron, how old um,
We're gonna have a chip on it. Later on in the year.
How old is he? I don'tknow, but he's ages a lot.
That's where I was gonna go withit, because he graduate. His last
year at the Arizona was nineteen eightyseven, so that puts him about six
years younger than he's about my agent. He's twee six. Yeah. I

(12:54):
didn't want to say that, butyeah, so the same same we're not
doing the same time. Um.Yeah, this year has been so crazy.
I'm sure he's got a few greathairs now a few more. Well,
he doesn't have much. Oh yeah, I guess he's yeah, just
had a lot too. He's alittle thin. Hey, let's talk about
real quick about our show today, right, um um um at at three

gonna fill him in a little bitmore on that, but always fun to
look at him, the stuff thathe puts up, and you know what
he gets. He does what heintends to do, which is to get

(14:24):
guys like us and others talking aboutsome of these some of these things that
he puts up, which is avery interesting one. Catt or I.
We reached out to him. He'sgonna be on the show. He was

I think last year at this timewe've spoke to you and had a
good time. It's gonna let's justmake it routine. We'll get you again
next year. Yet put us inyour calendar for this day next year.

(19:15):
How does this one feel? Um? This one, this one feels I
mean, you know, just asgood as as the last one. And
um, you know, teams werea little bit different this year. Um,
trying to get this game done. But um, you know, it's
still a good feeling. So let'slet's talk about that a little bit because
that was quite a quite a grindover at Hill and Brand. You get

(19:37):
postponed, you get postponed again. You played, you know, on a
Saturday morning. Um, was thereany any I mean both teams were having
to go through it, right,But still, how does that affect How
does that affect a team trying toget ready for a game like that.
Well, you know it was hardbecause you know, the girls get hyped
up and they get pumped up,ready to go, and then okay,

(19:59):
now it's a let down. Wehave to wait and then we have to
try to build them back up again, and then we're almost there. We
start the game, and then weatherhits and then it's okay, we've got
to We've got to keep them upand motivated and focused, and you know,
it's hard for them. But atthe same time, you know,
I'm really proud at how they overcamethe issues that they were you know,
they were faced with. And ourprinciple said it very, um so eloquently.

(20:23):
You know, from the beginning,we talked about um, you know,
adversity that we might face. Whenwe saw our schedule. We had
to play a lot of teams thatwere four, five and six A teams,
and we talked about the pressure asa privilege and so, you know,
at the adversity that we knew wewere going to face throughout the season,
we thought was just going to bescheduled wise, and so our principal,

(20:47):
mister Ramadan, was able to say, you know what, everything that
we prepared them for to face wasactually the adversity we were going to face.
With the weather, and so wejust really felt like the girls were
prepared and they did the best thatthey could and couldn't be more proud of
them. So I can't remember therecord, but obviously three we had the

(21:07):
Stu Point on they had lost one. I think the one they lost one.
We gave her a little grief aboutthat one. Let me give you
a grief about the three. Whathappened? So the three that we lost
are was one to South Point,Wow, and that was actually that was
a really good game for us.Um. I think that's the best we've

(21:30):
played them in years. Um.You know, we were leading until the
fifth inning and then um, youknow they just caught onto our pitcher and
yeah, that but we were wefinished all seven innings, so we were
sad excited about that. And thenwe also played Cdo in our opening tournament
and so we lost three zero tothem. Um. And then the other

(21:52):
loss we had was Paradise Honors, which is a phoenix another four eighteen.
Okay, so very good teams obviouslylegitimate when you when you're playing as well
agin you win thirty games, Howmuch did the losses help versus how much
wins help? Well, I meanthat's you know, when that's how we
learn, UM, that's how wemake changes, that's how we adjust and

(22:15):
and that's how we learn. Resiliencyis when we're able to bounce back,
we're able to use it to propelus and to learn from instead of let
it define us. So I thinkthat you know, we am We accept
those just as much as we acceptour our victories. UM, they're just
as important. A lot of thoselines and Jane knows this. I asked

(22:36):
this question all the time about coaches. Just what do you think your secret
sauces? You want? Two?Now? Right? Is that right?
Tune a row and well this ismy third with Sabino, but my second
as head coach. Okay, okay, so you're okay, So what is
your secret sauce me in being uhthe coach that has won these two or
three. I think it's trying tocreate a culture and environment that really encompasses

(23:03):
UM team first, and you know, the girls not being afraid to make
a mistake, UM, not beingafraid to take leads, to take charge,
to ask questions, UM, tobe students of the game. I
think it's just creating that culture ofa team first that really creates. You
know, that really makes a difference. You know when you when you talk

(23:25):
about that, there's you know, there's the culture that you want, but
then there's the culture that you have. Um you know, how what what
does a coach like you do toto create that to get the girls to
you know, understand, this iswhat we want, this is what we
need, and to kind of buyinto that. So the last couple of

(23:48):
years, you know, we westart our season off with a breakfast and
we all get together as a wholeprogram, UM varsity and jv and we
talk about the subneer standard and welet you know, we may guide them
as coaches, but their input iswhat drives this. And so if they
feel like they've got input and whowe are as a program, we feel

(24:10):
that that really helps them to buyin and have ownership. And this year
we had Stacy Iveson come out andtalk to the girls about what it means
to be a champion and what itmeans, you know, what it's going
to take the stay a champion andit's her the way that she spoke to
the girls, and you know, one of the things we really embraced was

(24:33):
she talks about, you know,be where your feet are and take it
one hurdle at a time. Andso you know, of course we always
you know, we want to bein this endgame. But you know,
if we had to walk it backand we had to say, Okay,
we're going to do one game ata time, We're going to prepare you
know, our biggest in our biggestrival, or our biggest game is the
next one we're going to play. And so that's how we really tried to

(24:57):
prepare them and they embraced it.We went from there. So you said,
is it five straight? Is thatwhat you said? Prestreight for you
guys have won four straight? Rightstraight? So a little dynasty. What's
the what is it? Michael overthere? Now? It's almost expected or
maybe not it is. And youknow, we've talked a lot about pressure.

(25:18):
Um. We have a shirt thatwe wear. On the front it
says Elite Mindset and on the backit says pressure is a privilege, UM,
And we've talked a lot about thatand embracing embracing the pressure because you
know, we've worked really hard asa program, even before you know,
I came to Sabino, they've workedreally hard at creating a culture and creating
a program that you know, withthese standards. And so now that we've

(25:42):
done, you know, well wehave to embrace the pressure and then um
and prepare for it. And that'show we kind of try not to let
the the circumstances or the events becomemore than what they are. So um.
You know, one of the otherthings that we've talked we always talked

(26:03):
about is that, you know, having to have a leader or leaders on
the team. Sometimes it can beplayers, sometimes it can be a coach,
you know, who leads in away that you don't have to have
an on the field leader. Butwhat what what did you see from your
team in that respect? Who doyou think were the leaders on your team
and how did they lead? Whatdid they do to say earn that earn

(26:25):
that title? I mean our seniors, our seniors were great this year.
UM as far as stepping up asleaders, you know, we didn't have
to really, we didn't name acaptain, but I think our leaders stepped
up in so many different ways. You know, we had a leader as
a short stop, um that reallyworks with the infield. We had you

(26:48):
know, two leaders in the outfieldwith our little twins that you know,
and and then we had you know, our leader behind the plate that was,
um, you know, leading fromleading the whole field. And then
we you know, those are ourseniors that you know that are just in
in our third basement. Is thatshe, you know, is one that
leads by example. Our seniors justin their own way have stepped up to

(27:10):
help lead their teammates. Um.So you know, I think I've read
somewhere that they said, I haveyou know, a bunch of coaches on
the field. Well, when you'vegot you know, kids that are students
of the game just as much, they just naturally fit into that position.
So our seniors have been incredible thisyear. So how many do you lose
and what do you get back?Um? So we lose six seniors this

(27:33):
year, and who returns and howdoes that look going to look? Well,
you know, we we uh,we still have our two pitchers that
predominantly pitched this year, which wasour sophomore Avery and our junior Soriyah.
And you know, we've got asophomore and a junior middle infielder that will

(27:56):
probably you know, take over.Um, we've got a catcher that's played
first base for us this year.So she'll try to fill in behind the
plate um. And then you know, we've been bringing up and keeping some
of our younger athletes the program. We carry them with us as much as
we could through our tournaments and thenthrough postseason so that they could experience postseason

(28:18):
and they could experience the fastness ofthis level so that it wasn't it wouldn't
be a shock for them, youknow, next year, it's something that
they can kind of flow right into. So just a question, as you
know, someone who's who lives here. You know, it used to be
that, you know, the goodteams where the teams where the kids were
in their neighborhood went to the school. How has that changed over time?

(28:41):
You know with open enrollments and thingslike that. Where do your players come
from that allow you to continue tobe this good Well, I think we're
still pulling from our you know, from our area and that's you know the
success of the program really helps asfar as bringing the interests to abino Um,
you know, but it makes itdifficult when you have you know,

(29:03):
programs like uh, you know stellpoint Um for example, and I went
to the stoll Point and so youknow, it's uh I understand that part
of it. I understand that, but I think we're still pulling from our
area, and um, you know, hopefully the program will continue to be
as successful to be able to retainstudents in our area. Yeah. Well

(29:25):
so having said that, then youknow, how how is it that you
you know, you have a programthen that that is getting the neighborhood kids
and that is you know, whyis softball that good out there? Who
helps along with that? That's farI'm not sure. Well, I'm like,
like, you know, when you'retalking about if you're getting kids from

(29:45):
the neighborhood, you're eight year olds, ten year olds, twelve year old
you know, teenagers, they've gotto be playing softball out you know,
in the in the Sabino area. How is that happening that your your program
can be this good by really drawingfrom the region or from the area.
You know, Club softball Okayum, you know, Southern Arizona has has some

(30:07):
really good softball talent and you know, just the club softball teams and good
coaching continuing to to build athletes asthey're coming through the ranks and coming through
the levels, and um, youknow that's it helps make high school coaches
jobs a little bit easier when youknow you're getting players that are playing for
quality teams and coaches and um,you know, it just makes things easier.

(30:33):
And also you can have some competitionnow that we saw the Empire is
building something over there as well onthe east side, so that east side
both softball is gonna be pretty good. And I'm sure a lot of them
play together. Well, yeah, after the tournament or after our championship game.
You know, we have two playerson our team and I think like
three or four on Empire's team thatyou know had to go, you know,

(30:56):
take off to the tournament and Phoenixto play together. Um, so
you know that made for an interestingdynamic. But I'm sure, you know,
they've been playing together for a while. I'm sure that everything just kind
of fell right back into place aminute. They were able to take the
field together. Well, we talkedabout this yesterday. I can't remember with
who, maybe it was the coachfrom yesterday, but these girls have grown
up together, right, even littlelittle girl ly little league, I don't

(31:18):
know what it's called now, um, where they're eight years old and they
by the time they're sixteen, seventeen, they know exactly how good they are
because they're grown up together playing.Yeah, so it helps you helps with
chemistry and all that. M thatsure does, all right, it sure
does. So so next year, you know, are we're gonna be here
talking about this again? Or youknow what, how do you go into

(31:42):
next year? You know you've wonfour state championships in a row. How
do you go to the next year? One you want to have expectations,
but two you also want to makesure that people keep their wits about them
on stuff like this. How doyou do that? Well, I think
the biggest thing is you have tostay humble because one thing about this aim
is that you know it. Ifyou're not humble, it's going to humble

(32:04):
you pretty quickly. Um. I'velearned that as a cot and as a
as a player, that you haveto stay humble. Um. You can
be hungry, but you need tostay humble. And so I think,
you know, as we get backtogether and we prepare for next year,
you you know, we have tokeep that in mind. And um,
we you know, continue to bringresources to the girls, to pour into
the girls. And um, Ithink there's enough girls that have been around

(32:28):
as we talk about our core standardsthat will help carry on the tradition and
the leadership. Um. So it'sI think we'll be I think we'll be
okay. Um, you know it'llbe a different look, but um,
I think we'll be okay. Doany of the any of the the young
women are going to be going tocollege playing? Yes, we have,

(32:50):
Um, we have one. Ourshort stop is still undecided. Um.
We are two of our outfielders, the twins, they're going to East as
on A College. And we haveour surveaseman who's going to Scottsdale Community College
and our catchers that's going to FortLewis College in Colorado. Okay, great,

(33:10):
congratulations to them. Yeah, manto you again. Yes, super
well we'll talk next may. Thankyou. Thank you, coach. So
Syndey could be man state championships allover the place. You know what,
you made a good point. Youknow out on the east side of their

(33:31):
vampires you know, got in theirprogram going the way they've got going.
That that can be a fun rivalry, that can right, that can build
up over time. And you know, Jay, if you have a rival,
relate that that's good. Uh.The only thing that you could do
was continue to be good because becauseyou know other people are going to be
good too. Yeah. Yeah,uh, you know that's how you get
better, get you have competition, you do You not like this basketball with

(33:53):
Hu and you A. They haven'tgotten better because haven't really been a right
rival right right for at ever ever. Yeah, okay, all right,
we'll take our next break. We'llbe back. We've got breaking news at
the top of the hour. Thenwe're gonna talk big game Boomer next hours.

I just opened up a Facebook post. There's an art. There's a let's

(37:44):
say, discussion going under Andy Morales'suh Facebook Facebook feed about it's it's referring
to South Points five stad I readit earlier and people being you know,
well, they get to recruit andyadda YadA, y hadda and that kind
of stuff, and it's like,I get it, But then how do
you explain Sabino's fourth straight state championship? Right? Right? I thought that

(38:07):
was one of the first things Ithought when she came on. Yeah,
no questions again parents, right,uh, talking about stuff they know or
don't know, but bringing out inthe public. Hasn't this always been the
case with this specific topic. Yeah? Well again, you know, they're
a private school. It's not theirfault, right, They're a private school.
Go ahead and tell you explain.Okay. The argument is that let's

(38:29):
let's let's just say the name, that's South Point as an advantage because they
can get students from throughout the area. They do offer scholarships and so you
know players they say, you know, they feel like, well, you
know, the good players you knowget attracted there. But still one,
you gotta like the school. Doyou gotta be smart enough to get in
the school? Right? Three?Afford the school, and afford the school

(38:52):
because not everybody gets a scholarship, right And and is there some recruiting going
on, no doubt. I mean, you know, suth Point actually got
in trouble remember a few years backfor football recruiting you're not supposed to.
We know that that private schools do. Um. You know, my kids
went to a private school and Iwas a small school, private school.

(39:13):
But there was this one particular athletewho wanted to leave the school and go
somewhere, to go to a biggerschool. And and our athletic director basically
told me, he said, youknow because he went through he went there,
you know, in middle school.Right, so he wanted to go
to high school at a big school, you know, frankiemboo And uh right,
great. It was a really goodathlete. He would have been a
good, good player no matter wherehe went. But um, you know,

(39:36):
Paul Bernoski, who was the athleticdirector at the time, convinced him
and said, you know, whereveryou go, they're gonna find you,
so just stay. And he wasright, and he was right. He
was Frank, you got a fouryear scholarship, got a master's degree.
He's an investment banker now and doingreally well and taking a large part because
he stayed where there were people thatcared about him and and all those things.

(39:58):
Now, you know, these kidsthat go to South Point, it's
because they can't, right, Andthere's nothing wrong with that, right,
you know, my son wanted togo to South Point, and then he
went and he did his visit, and then he decided to stay at Saint
Gregory. Right, And he hada great time at Saint Gregory. Right.
Right, my son had the sameopportunity. It was soccer. It
was soccer because they have Wolfgang. He played for Wolfgang forever, great soccer
program. Uh, the same groupthat the Cameron was in. A fantastic

(40:22):
team. They went all over thecountry and the paper are just closed.
The paper are just closed. There'sno way we're gonna be able to send
him to South Point. The paperhad just closed. What are we gonna
do? And half went to SouthPoint, half went to foot Hills and
they went both won state titles andeverything was fine, right, eventually,
guess what it all turns out fine? It does look south Point has always

(40:42):
been south Point without questions, andthey have not always been good at everything?
Correct, right? Correct? Imean there was I mean they didn't
win a state football championship till justa couple of years ago, and they've
been around forever and ever, andthey didn't want it was the state basketball
championship they had won one. Hisdad dad. No, No, the

(41:04):
you a Miller's guy, Miller's assistant. God, we had them on the
show from Cincinnati. The dad thedad no, yeah, uh um.
The dad was the coach. Okay, mister, yeah, but you know
so south Point A. South Pointhas always been a private school that can

(41:25):
draw players from everywhere, and they'venot always been good at everything. Well,
so you know they are now aren'tAren't schools able to kind of recruit
outside now? Well, they Cindysaid, She said they might drop mostly
from their area. With open enrollmentthey can get But you know that's what
are you gonna drive across the timeto go to Sabino probably when you can

(41:45):
probably go to CDO or Flowing Wellsor one the other. No, but
if you're this parent spending enough timeto write this, you're gonna be a
guy or a woman who says,m where's the better programs at form my
daughter or boy to have a successathletically? Right? That I might?
I might, you know, Imean so it's look, it's it's a

(42:09):
it's an argument that's been going onforever, forever and ever, and to
to to bring it up now,you know, to kind of maybe take
away from what some of these kidsare achieving. It's like, go to
bed. Well that's all that. What's your point, right, It's like
an old point. I mean, okay, you threw it out the somebody
tests that their kid didn't win astate championship in salth Points won five in

(42:30):
a row. The sun will comeup tomorrow, it will, It really
will, you know, you know, But anyways, its just just a
long I saw that to a longargument that's been going on since, I
mean since I was sure in highschool, you know, I mean we
all saw a stalth Point that youknow as a place where but you know,
when I was in high school, salth Point wasn't good at everything,

(42:51):
you know, and in fact, they were terrible at some sports. Right,
They're terrible at wrestling. Um,they were okay at baseball. That
was around the time that Ed Bossburg. Can those guys were you know,
starting to come through there. Umum there was another guy, um Mark
carry on. You know some ofthose guys. But you know, they
weren't good at all. They weren't. They were really not good at basketball

(43:12):
for the longest time. I thinkit was until Jim Flannery went over there,
and you know, it ran aprogram for a long time and they
got better, but they still didn'twin a state championship until just a few
years ago. And that school isdecades old. My mother in law,
who's eighty something, went there,So you know, I mean, it's
it's it's but it is Steve,as you said, it's unfortunate that,

(43:35):
Yeah, people, you know, get all worked up about the single Send
your kid to a high school thatyou think that they can succeed at.
Let him play sports and let himhave a good time. Well, and
that's just sports academically is going tobe the most important thing at the end
of the day. That's what Ithink. The advice that your a d
gave Frankie, who's a great kid, I met him for that contest,
Uh, is exactly. And Isee this for the NBA and NFL.

(43:59):
If you're good, they will findyou. I don't care if you're one,
A, two, A, three, four, whatever you are.
If you're good enough, they willfind you. If you're not good enough,
you're not gonna you're not good. You're not gonna make They're not spending
millions of dollars just to say,oh, give us a try. Yeah,
you know, at the at thebig level, at the highest level.
Absolutely. Anyways, all right,I asked you off off air if

(44:20):
you have a pool one that Iused once a year and my kids loved
it well, and that's what they'refor. Yeah, but they're all gone.
So now I'm just trying to keepthe pool from not going green.
You both, But I've got abeef with the pool industry. Look the
prices for their damn parts. Ohwell parts and the little the white,

(44:42):
the plorine things. But my god, so there's this one part that I've
not had replaced twice. Okay,it's a it's plastic, it's made out
of it's made out of plastic.Probably constant eighty five cents. Man,
that's an exact dation. Maybe it'sthree dollars. Okay, it's two hundred
dollars. Okay, I had replaceswell back. So now this clamp on
my poolpump, I thought it wasbusted, but it turned out it was

(45:06):
not just a bolt on. Itwas busted. But it's this crapass clamp
that's got this little screw on itthat I thought the screw was stripped.
It on any good you can't justbuy the screw. You have to buy
the clamp now. I go,I go online, and this has nothing
to do with sports, by theway. I go online and I see
the part for one hundred and thirtyto one hundred and fifty bucks. But
I need it now because the poolthe pump hasn't been running for a few

(45:28):
days and it's going green already. And I'm leaving town on Wednesday. I'm
not gonna be if I'm not gonnabe able to get the part online before
I leave. So I got tofind this part in town. I find
it in town three hundred plus dollars, so more than twice what it is
online. And then you have someoneto put it in. Right, No,
I can put it on. Butthen I found out I had taken

(45:50):
it to, you know, apool store. And then I find out
there's nothing wrong with the clamp. It's just the bolt got stripped. But
they didn't detect that they were gonnasund me the damn three hundred dollars clamp
when it was a twenty dollar partthat I needed. So you got the
twenty dollars party. But even there, I saw that part online for any
fair from twelve thirteen dollars twenty fivebucks here in town. Piss me off.

(46:12):
So if you got a pull, fill it up with dirt. That's
what I'm gonna do with mine.I think we all shoot make it into
a planter. Yeah here, anyway, I just had I I've been working
on this all day long. Ifinally I got the part. I'm pissed
off, and but I'm gonna getmy pools done and it won't be green
in a couple of days. Yeah, okay, Now we get off to
the Jay rant over the day. What do you think, Jason, Um,

(46:37):
I've never had a pool before,so I'm really sure. I was
gonna say, that's just people withmoney problems. It's its first world problem.
It definitely his first world problems,no doubt about. He was doing
a little by little. I sawyou. I said, you're going,
what the hell are we talking about? This is not what I signed up
for as an unpaid intern. Youlisten to this rant about swimming pool.

(47:00):
I had a row with me.He has a pullet. I had a
rant. I just want those guysat the pool store. You know what
I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna emailthem that rant and so hey. But
by the way, we need apool sponsor, so come on all right,
so there you go. Anyways,I'm dead, Um, I'm still
fired up about Arizona baseball. Steve. That was it was a fun game
to watch. I watched it inpieces, you know. I was watching

(47:22):
it at home, then went tothe pull store. So I'm listening to
it in the car and I'm drivingacross town to my lunch. I'm listening
it in the car. Then we'vegot it on phones on the table and
we sat there and watched it andthey win the game, and you know,
good for Chip Hale again. Chip. You know, another guy that's
taking a bit of a beating,right, you know, a A bunch
of people have said, you know, he's he was not the guy he's.
You know, it's the same peoplethey're talking about Tommy Lloyd. It's

(47:44):
honestly, and people are just someof those who said that about Kaitlin Lowe.
People just like to complain. Imean, a buddy of mine who
calls in and now said the samething. At least they must have been
losing. When they were losing, they were down, and I'm thinking the
pitching, the pitching who is itworse? And then we'll talk about this
man four minutes who he said, who has it worse the women's pitching or

(48:05):
the men's pitching, and the Ithink, come on, get over this
really, And then then somebody elsetexts me they just want yeah, listen
there, take that, yeah exactlyexactly, and the kid there and I
will say that. So so they'rethey're down, um uh, you know,
they're they're up. They're up,I think twelve eleven or something.
They're bringing this pitcher he's got aseven point three er. You just go,

(48:29):
Holly hell, he doesn't. Hedidn't have any better body better than
that in the bullpen. And thenthe guy does the job right, he
does, He does the job getyou know, doesn't allow anymore runs,
and they win the game Chris Razza, and you feel good about him,
especially when you hear that he wason the you know, on the other
side of two walk offs up atI saw good for him. I saw
those and I didn't watch for himinty games when I saw those two because

(48:51):
just happened to Channel Surf, andI'm thinking, God, how can they
blow these leads? They brew afree them whole. I think they had
eight walk off losses this year orsomething like, didn't that the number?
Yeah around, Yeah, sometimes magichappens on the good side. Yeah,
sometimes, yeah, so you know, but yeah, yeah, I know,
I'm I'm excited for Chiff Hale, feel good about about the baseball team

(49:13):
doing that. And uh, youknow, you know what that game between
Oregon and Oregon State, well,Oregon State needs to play to win it
because they can still get into thebracket as a wild card. If they
end up one and one as thenumber two seed the tournament, they'll get
the wild card spot unless Stanford doesn'tget in. So we'll see what happens.
But anyways, all right, we'vegot enough time for a quick call.

(49:36):
Thanks you Gabriel for calling in before. Uh and then see and then
we'll have some breaking news. Andit was on the basketball news. Continues
to kind of search out and seewhat happens. It doesn't look like two
ballas is going to come back, right we've kind of thought that right away.
That happened when I remember I wrotethat story. I says, you
know, he's gonna jump and andand we'll see. He says he's leaving
the options open. Whether that's believableor not. Well, he's got to

(49:58):
decide by thirty first, thirty firstTuesday, right Wednesday, thirty first Wednesday.
Yeah, if he comes back, gonna be a little I did see
that the Kansas got a guy backtoday. Uh and now everybody's seen Kansas
is the hands down favorite to win, to win the national Nico gets you
see hand Yeah, we'll see howhands down that is. Yeah, but
they did. They get to thesweet six teams here, they lost in

(50:19):
the lost because self is not cursingthirty two right around a thirty two.
Yeah, so they then after lastyear, who knows the favorites are no
good Houston, Bamo, all theseteams. Yeah so but yeah they're they're
already handy. Kansas state the nationalchampionship next year. Kansas, I mean
Kansas. Guse me. Kansas threwa little spice in their mind stakes drinking.

(50:40):
Okay, cool cool cool. Sobreaking news from from Jason here and
uh and then we'll have a biggame Boomer probably time to get us on
him too for his stuff. I'llhave to go to Twitter. So we
got to talk some Celtics and Heat. Celtics and Heat. Yeah, yeah,
I didn't watch the game last night. What did you see? I
watch like the first half of thegame. Um, it be sporting.
Yeah for me, I don't know. It's hard for me to watch like

(51:02):
Celtics basketball sometimes because they are sucha tonted team, but the way they
play up and down all the time, it just gets kind of like frustrating
for me who likes to watch goodbasketball, Like the Nuggets, they play
like really smart good I can drobblebasketball, And then you watch the Celtics
just jacking up threes every possession likeI play all the time. I don't
know. Sometimes drowball for me.Yeah, I hardly watched any of the

(51:24):
game either. Yeah, I'm readyfor the finals. Yea, here's the
sucky thing, the finals. Stonescarts with June first, Right, we
may go a week without any basket. Yeah, I probably is, so
ye wait till it's over. Waittill it's over. Do you would go
for two months? Baseball? Mangot baseball? Dodgers ran their first place,
their first place. Do good. It's not my sport either, so

(51:45):
Jackson, we just have each other. Yeah. Oh wow, it was
cool. Yeah, you're going tobreak out, break out the mandolin and
the candles over here for pool. It's green right now. We'll wait till
you get that. Screw it allright, man, We'll be right back.
It's breaking News at the top ofthe hour with Jason stick around.
