(06:04):

found out we're able to buy intothe championship. So that's what we
did. So all of us madesure we went. We went at as
a group and to have a funweekend and uh, you know, we
the expectations were pretty pretty high forsome things. And you know, we're

(06:24):
excited mostly to play Latrope Country Clubbecause there's you know, it's a private
course it's Arnold Palmer's home. Itwas, you know, a treat to
be able to do that, andthen the cost for the buying was was
tremendous given that was one of thethings we got, so uh it was
good. I just I didn't expectit to be such a tight tournament.
You know, almost every every flightwas so close knit, and everybody was

(06:46):
was so evenly matching me for uhfor a real good finish, sitting on
the edge of your ce whole day, I'm grinding on him and finally finish
up. Me and uh Me andAustin tied for second place, one shot
off the land. So day two, going to La Trobe, I'm I'm
paired up with two other guys andthey started off strong. I kept playing

(07:09):
strong, kept playing silent, siltsout and they kind of fell off.
So I'm like, okay, Igot these guys be I'm waiting for the
other guys. So I kind oftail off at the end and I'm like,
it's not it's not gonna get itdone. Shout out ninety one.
I'm like, this is not gonnaget it done. These guys are too
good. So I'm waiting in theparking lot. I got like a thirty
minute wait, and I'm waiting andI'm pacing and pacing, and one at

(07:29):
a time, I start getting guysin my group. And I got him
by. I got him by,and I'm waiting on us and he's coming
in. He's coming in. Hepulls up the cart. He's like,
I'm like looking at him, He'slooking at me. I'm like, what
did you shoot ninety two? AndI'm like, I got a ninety one
and I'm like he just hangs hishead. But great, kid, it
was. It was a great tournament. It was fun. It was it
could have been closer. One strokegot me here. Would you recommend anybody

(07:53):

the chance to be one of fivepeople that standing right here. This is
dumb Barney. Like I said, the sun is out, which is amazing,

great golf course, I show up, I qualify, I mean, Randy
the team and I get to goto Nashville's in Latrobe. My buddy I
work was from Latrowe we gotta goout there, hang out for a few
days. Player on a Palmer's course, which was amazing. I was in

(08:37):
I think third or fourth after thefirst day, ended up playing really good
on the front, had a roughback nine, so kind of came in.
It was really really close down tothe end. I think there was
a handful of us within a coupleof strokes, and I just got lucky.
My name was on top. Gota sword out of it. And
I mean, here in Scotland,it's amazing and the sun is out and
you could ask for a better day. When did it really hit you when

(08:58):
you won in Latrobe? You knowI acted to that you'd want to free
trip to Scotland. Yeah, itwas, uh, you know, it's
too good to believe. At first. It took me a week or two
till I really I was watching thevideos, watching the interviews, and you
know, when Randy started shooting stuffout about hey, I'm gonna hit you
guys up this time frame for thefor the itinerary and the dates, and

(09:20):
and start sinking in. You're saying, oh, I gotta get a passport.

more be full. Brunswick Island,North Carolina. Well, not only is

(16:03):
it home to nature and alligators andsea turtles and just beauty and sunset beach,
but here at sea Trails have gotthree great golf courses. Doug.
Look if somebody's coming down from Canadaor Chicago or our Pittsburgh, PA.
Yeah, it's still a geographical lessonhere exactly where Brunswick County, North Carolina

(16:26):
is located. Yeah, I meanwe share a border with South Carolina,
so we're just located just north ofthe border in North Carolina, right on
the coast in Brunswick County. It'sbeautiful or what is it five little islands
you have off the off the coasthere, it's five, I think it's
five totals. Yes, Wow,it's just gorgeous and it's a weird thing.

(16:47):
Later in the year, down herein Brunswick, North Carolina, you
can actually get a sunrise and asunset at the right time on some of
the beaches down here. Yeah,I mean it's called suns at beach here.
Actually, where we're at, Imean Sea Trails Resort here, do
we call a plantation resort? Seatrails resorts resort? Yes, sea trail

(17:11):
resorts. Doug here is going totalk us about this lovely, lovely property
not only with accommodations, but alsothree distinct golf courses that are going to
cause you to use every club inyour bag, no doubt right, Yeah,
definitely. Yeah. You long hittersare going to have some options there.
You guys that are wedged players.Guess what we've got golf courses for

(17:33):
you too. Well. The goodthing we'll start with is we've got three
full, eighteen whole golf courses, actually by a different designer each one of
them. So we've got a uniqueexperience at each one of the courses.
You know, that's the thing.I mean, if you pay play a
Pete Die golf course, you knowwhat you're getting with a Pete Die.
So you've got a Reese Jones design. We've got a Reese Jones. We've

(17:57):
got a Willard Bird Willard, andwe've got a Dan Maples as well.
Oh, everybody loves Dan Maples fromthe South. I do too. That's
actually that's my favorite of the threecourses. When you say Maples has a
soft, gentle way of designing, like we just said, Pete Dye,
I mean Dye gives you the worldrailroad ties and problems in real rough lines.

(18:22):
Maple is more of a a monee. It's it's a subtle just honestly,
every time I'm out there, it'slike an easy feeling. That's what
I like about it, right,Yeah, three great different golf experiences.
Yes, yes, we've got thethree different golf experiences. We've got the
accommodations actually on property. So thegood thing here we like to have you.

(18:47):
You know, once you come here, you've got three courses to play,
You've got morning afternoon tea times. You know, you can do thirty
six holes a day three days. You can go right back to your condo.
Is right on property. You reallydon't have to leave the area.
You know. The condos are reallywhat we're staying are just magnificent. I

(19:08):
know some properties are a little bitdated, and don't put back into their
condo experiences. But you guys arereally top shelf in the condos. I'm
really enjoying it. Everything's here's thecrazy thing. You know what's impressed me.
Yeah. A shower curtain. Ashower curtain. Yes. Have you
seen the shower curtains in the condos? You know, I haven't. It

(19:30):
is the coolest thing and I'll probablyput it in a video. You know
where the loop comes over the shower. Yeah, instead of having the loop
exposed, it is a palm tree. Oh that is cool. It is
just a little classy thing. Yeah, yeah, I've seen that. Yep.
Yeah, right, Yeah, that'sattention to detail and to me,
that's what so far at Sea TrailsI'm enjoying because you can open up your

(19:53):
doors and okay, we'll renovate everyfive years. Don't worry, we'll paint.
You guys are on top things.Yeah, and that's you know,
that's kind of being up here inBrunswick County. We have that. It's
a little more to laid back feeland we try to do that with everything
here on property, you know, from the backdrop to in the pro shop.

(20:15):
We want everybody to come here feelrelax. If you're on vacation,
you know, you're not supposed tobe stressed out about work or any of
that stuff. So you come here, you relax. That's what we try
to give you, is that experienceto be able to relax. And I'll
enjoy this beautiful sun. Yeah, the southern sunshine, no doubt about it.

(20:36):
Now it is mid October. Now, the people up north, it's
start and get a little bit colder, especially Canada. Yeah, it's getting
colder. You know, they're headingsouth. Laid back lifestyle here. The
niceness to tranquility, I think isnot only a selling point for someone that
would want to come visit Brunswick,North Carolina, but maybe even move here.

(20:57):
Oh definitely. Yeah. I meanthat's kind of been a big,
a big push here now is we'veseen a lot more people actually come down
here for retirement. Um Like, for instance, when you first drove into
the to the gates here, um, you saw all these new single family
homes going up. We've actually gotum several single family homes. We've got

(21:21):
a few multifamily homes going up justin this property alone. So that's been
a big trend. Is you know, people actually moving down here, whether
it's full time or you know,we have snowbirds, we have this people
just having their vacation homes. We'veseen a lot more of that than we've
had in the past. Well, let's get back into golfing around these three

(21:45):
beautiful golf courses. Yes, Imean the Rece course are really enjoy very
much. There's, um the mounding. You know, I hate the word
links esque, Yes, you know, because you know link saska I hate.
But you've got a lot of moundingaround the green complexes. And it's
to me on the on the Reescourse, it's uh, you've got nice

(22:08):
fairways green complexes. Uh yeah,I mean that's kind of where your strokes
are gonna be gaining and lost outhere on the Jones course, that is
um. You know, it's generousfrom tee to green, but around the
green is where you're going to seethe mounding around the green. So if
you miss the green, you knowyou're gonna have a tough up and down.

(22:29):
And here's the point with that forme at least, So if you
mound and I really like them,Okay, okay, you if you're a
heavy bomber like these kids are anymorethat's I'm buying three twenty off the tea
box. What you know, eventwo eighty yeah, you know to me
is long. Okay, well nowit is for me too, right,
and then their second shot is equallyas long. Then they're on the green

(22:56):
and they're putting, and then they'reputting all kind of you know, eagles
and ours up to me, whenyour Rhese Jones designs the i'll call it
the United Kingdom Scottish Ireland mounding aroundthe greens. Yes, then your long
ball doesn't help you. That's exactlyright. You gotta go to work if

(23:18):
one of those balls gets, say, behind a mound that's eight feet up
above the green. Yeah, it'syes, what this is called a pitching
ledge. That's it. It takesgreat control, right, that's it.
And it's to me that brings thegame more into it really instead of just
a green that okay, okay, you got a bunker there and some water

(23:40):
there. Well, i'll tell youa perfect example, Number ten, just
over three hundred yards from the backteeth. We actually had a hole in
one on that hole the other day. But I've seen plenty of three ten
yeah, you know, stop threeten hole in one. Yes, Yes,
this is why you're this is anexample. Yeah, right, But

(24:03):
I've also seen the same people, you know, go for that green.
There's water all in front of it, there's a bunker that protects that green,
and obviously all the mounding around it. Talk us through the other course,
what's like distinctive. I mean,we know the Rees Jones course has
the mounding around the greens. Whatwould the maple? Yes, the Maples
is going to be more your traditionaltree line course. So that's actually the
oldest course that we have on theproperty. That was the first one that

(24:27):
was built, and it has alot of mature oaks on it. Um.
It gives you a little bit moreof that, um, your typical
country club, old school field.UM. I always love I heard a
guy today actually talk about how hewas playing Hickory stick clubs Yeah Toomey's with
yeah yeah, and I said, man, that would fit perfect over the

(24:48):
Maples. That's I always say.It's it's a traditional feel. Everything there
is kind of your your natural traditionalgolf course. I love it because it's
not it's not a long course, but again you know that's where your drives
have to be in play. Well, I'm a member of the Golf Heritage

(25:10):
Society. Okay, and we playHickory touraments all the time. Okay,
So you know that HARKing back tothe lineage of golf, that is the
maple design. That's that's it.I mean, that's kind of say that
good do I get a cookie?You get you get a cookie. That's
the big thing over on Maples isit. It's traditional. You know,
I love the feel of it.It reminds me of when I was younger.

(25:32):
You know, I'm from smaller townthan Kansas, Um. And it's
it's a different field than what golfhas turned into with the you know,
everything being grandiosos. This is justyour straight up we're playing golf. I
love that. Yeah right, yeah, yeah, every every every course anymore

(25:52):
seems to be eight thousand yards yeaand clause. These kids are banging at
three twenty. That's it, youknow, all right. Our third course
talk of course, as the Birdcourse will wear bird Um, that one
is going to be a little bittighter of your course, you know,
not as tight as Maples Um.Bird is really big into you know,
creating the water hazards. The ithas some some fairway bunkers in there,

(26:19):
some waste areas. Um. Hiswhole thing is basically trying to make it
feel like you're in nature. Sothat whole course is like golfing and feeling
exactly why would I want that? But that's kind of the feeling you have
on the bird course, is thatyou're on a nature walk while you're playing
golf. Now you're talking to myheart. I mean, look, I'm

(26:41):
a high handicapper. Okay, Ionly play a golfer on television. Okay,
you know I'm a hacker. ButI love this game. I hope
I played to the day I die. But it is seeing the snapping turtles,
the four deer I saw this morning. Yes, it looked at me
like, what are you doing here? You know, it was just out
of your monkey. Yeah, yeah, he's around someplace. But you know,

(27:07):
even the alligators. Yeah, youknow, the trees, the pine
cones. I'm from Pittsburgh, wehave pine trees. But you know,
smelling the pine trees springtime with magnolia. You know, it's it really is
for me communing with nature. I'ma guy who likes to walk in the
woods and listen to streams, andI think that's why golf has always appealed
to me, so that I'd walkin the woods after your drive. Yeah,

(27:30):

song during the eighties, Ice iceBaby. Well, a bunch of guys
got together and did a parody songcalled slice, Slice Baby, Yo,
v I b let's kick it.Slice snice baby, Slice, snice baby,

(31:15):
Slice snice baby. All right, stops, concentrate and listen. The
slices back with some real bad intentionsin my hand hold the club real tightly
fold like a black swipper ball willgo right and leave? Will it ever
stop? Yo? I don't know. If I could play the slice,
I'd go lower to the extremely drivesare in sham boys, squeeze it so
tight. I can't man hand orsl I hold a picture. Things soon
swiping scores away like an old stylestraw broom. Deadly man. I need

(31:38):
a rim of the swinging like thisshort is a tragedy. If I can't
retrieve it, you're better make waythis slice me. It's so hard to
play. If I could fix theproblem, you know i'd solve it.
Left. The rice spin of ballshort is revolving. Slice baby slice,
snice baby slice, nice baby, shice, nice baby. Now that my

(32:07):
ball ain't jump in and with myhands off, shaking in my pulse to
be pumping quick to the ball,to the ball, no faking playing like
this. I can't win, nobacons, I said. I'm a quick,
more nimble. I go crazy whenI play in a scramble with my
high hat and my real fast tempo. I'm on a roll. Time to
get a real slow driver with myfive point Oh, I could hit a
stiffer shaft just for a show.Oh, come to their own stand by

(32:28):
waiting for that try. Did youtry? No? I just rolled by.
I kept on hoping the slice wouldstop. I tried to hit a
limp with all of this, wouldhit a block. The block is dead,
yo, So I continued to hitit straight that role. I got
hot and my clubs started blinging, hitting it so bad. I really can't
believe it's jealous because I can't hitmine? All right, what do you
think of that? I applaud theMartin. They're ambition there man taking their

(32:52):
passion for golf and music in combiningthem. All Right, Hey, it's
time to talk about the Gaylord GolfMecca. The Gaylord Golf Mecca, beautiful
man. Seventeen courses up there besidesLake, Michigan and Michigan awesome. You
know it's up there recently and Ireally enjoyed it. It was a great
way to beat the summer heat herein Pittsburgh. One of the courses I

(33:14):
played was the Black Lake Golf Course. Black Lake Golf Course, I mean,
just tip, top man, firstclass five stars. Had a chance
to talk with the pro Nick afterthe round of golf up there. So
let's talk to Nick. Then we'llhead on out down the trail for this
week on the golfing around a radiohour. All right, Michigan, he's

(33:38):
got a lot of golf courses, great golf course, absolutely, a lot
of great people. I hear TimAllen mister on the Pure Michigan Michigan.
Yeah, he's part of the PureMichigan campaign to sell it golf in Michigan.
What's pure Michigan, I don't getit. Pure Michigan is an advertising
campaign in the state, put togethera few years ago that brings people estate

(34:00):
four tourism in a variety of areas, golf, boating, kayaking, just
to join the outdoors. Pure Michiganmeans the outdoors is what I heard there?
You go, yeah, all right, and it is gorgeous. I
mean, if you've never come ona golf trip with a lot of people,
Nick go down to Myrtle Beach allthe time, year after year.
If you've never considered Gaylord golf mecca, you need to put it on your

(34:22):
bucket list. It is just sobeautiful up here. Yeah, it's a
it's a great spot. You know. The nice thing about it. When
it's hot down in Myrtle Beach,it's cool up here. I tell people
all that all the time in Texasand stuff and Louisiana. Why don't you
going north to Michigan to golf?Yeah, yeah, it's great up here.
The days are long, sunsets aroundnine thirty ten o'clock in June,

(34:44):
July August, so you've got plentyof time to get thirty six holes in
or eighteen or twenty seven whatever youwant to do. Did you imagine fifty
four and one day? And allright? I couldn't do it? Yeah,
right, all right. So geographicallyfor you people that are challenged out
there, you've got the great stateof Michigan. Detroit's down south. So
if Detroit's here, you're over hereon Lake Michigan, right, Yeah,

(35:07):
you got the hand kind of thing, yeah, the hand thing, it
works, right. So we're aboutfifty miles south of the tip of the
Lower Peninsula, Macanal Island, macinawBridge, And you know, it's a
great area around here with the amountof golf courses and being part of the
Galor Golf Mecca. You know, you got about eighteen nineteen different golf courses
to choose from nineteen golf course yeah, just crazy. And some great resorts

(35:30):
around here. We offer lodging treetopsoffer lodging at Seagle Resort. And we're
all good competitors, right, Weall work together because we feel that if
we get you here once, you'llcome back and try another one of our
resorts in the area. I don'tknow why you'd come back again. I
mean, it's beautiful here, peopleare nice here, the golf courses are

(35:52):
great here. There's a lake overthere called Michigan. Right. The food
is good. Yeah, I don'tknow why you'd ever come back to such
a nice place. It's gore justup here, it really is. It's
it's home for me. And I'vebeen all over the country in a different
roles and capacities, and this iswhat I call home because of the climate
and the diversity of the golf. And you know what, if you like

(36:12):
I am, and you're tired oftraffic and beep beep and people driving crazy,
the roads are open up here.Everything is so big, I guess
because of the rain. And yeah, the worst thing you might have to
stop for some turkey crossing the roador something like that. Or you might
see a deer or something like that. Turkey is in Larry leaving the bar,
or live turkey turkey crossing the road. And you know that's the other

(36:35):
thing. You see a lot ofnature here. You know. One thing
that's great about this golf course inparticular, is there's no development on this
golf course, right Carl houses houses, you know, no condos, So
it's just pure golf, you know, and you're not seeing somebody next to
you on another fairway. It's justcarved out of the woods and it's gorgeous.
You were up at Mackinaw at theGrand Hotel for a long time.
If you folks don't know, MackinawIsland and the Grand Hotel, it's just

(37:00):
north of here by how far aboutan hour fifty minutes and then you got
a a half hour boat rude, which is great. The little ferry over
there. You might remember Superman,Christopher Reeves, Sigournia Weaver, James Seymour,
James Yea and Somewhere in Time.Somewhere in Time was filmed at the
Grand Hotel and I've been there severaltimes. Absolutely, it's very stately,

(37:23):
it's a it's a it's a stepback in time, so to speak.
You know, after six o'clock it'scoat and ties for the gentleman ladies dressed
their finest to go to dinner, and it's it's it's just kind of a
relaxed environment. There's ballroom dancing atnight, um and great dining options there
and the little horses pull you throughthe island and if you like fudge,

(37:45):
it's the place to go. Thereason I do mention that not only did
he work there before, But it'sjust part of the reasons you'd come to
the Upper Peninsual. Yeah, absolutely, you know, Macada is a big
draw just because it's unique and thenit doesn't allow animal beals on the island.
Everything's by you know, horse drawnbuggy or bike. But you'll find

(38:05):
all kinds of different kind of thingsup here to do, you know,
in addition to golf, right, you know, you've got vineyards over in
uh Traverse City. We have NonStopservice from Dallas right into Traverse City now
in the summertime. So it givesyou a lot of options to get here,
a lot of things. Tox Moorein Northern Michigan. Yeah, so
if you want to fly in theTraverse traversy And he was the same guy

(38:28):
from Fort Sam Houston down San Antonia. Yet I don't know. Yeah,
I'm just winging it on that one, Travis the Great Explorer. So much
to do here in Gala, thegolf mecca. But I teed it up
and you teed it up today onyour home track here just a Jim Dandy.
Yeah, it's gorge just the ReesJones design, you know, and
he's a guy who did the youknow, some of the redesigns on the

(38:50):
US Open on courses for that andhe's known as the Open Doctor and the
UAW was very fortunate to bring himin here to design this golf course.
It opened in two thousand. Youknow, it's seven thousand yards from the
tips, and the shape is phenomenal. It is really beautiful. And I
emphasize beautiful golf course. A lotof times we golf, you know,

(39:13):
to play in a local charity tournament, but most of the time we're out
there to commune with nature. Andyou've got it, I mean just beautiful.
Yeah, this uh, this areahere, you know, we're you
know, a quarter mile from theshores of Black Lake, which is one
of the largest lakes in northern Michigan, if not in Michigan. And uh,
you know, so you've got allkinds of natural things around here to

(39:34):
do, you know, besides thegolf. Well, let's talk about the
course a little bit wide open fairways, but when you get into those green
complexes, you're not I'm saying wastedbunker. Sometimes a designer will put a
bunker, you know, because it'sI candy, You're a bunker's actually trap
balls, which you know a lotabout in a share of them today as

(39:55):
a matter of facting and h youknow, one thing I love about it
is the bunkering around here is it'sI candy number one, like you said,
but number two. It just addsso much to the playability of the
golf course. Right. You canget in there, but they're not you
know, twenty feet deep, right, so they're playable to get out of.
It's one of the things we takegreat pride in and keep our bunkering

(40:19):
up to a high standard so youcan play out of the bunkers. Well,
talking about that high standard, wewere talking a little bit about your
superintendent. He's been here how longbecause he cares about this call. Chris
has been here at least fifteen sixteenyears and you know he wasn't hired as
a superintendent. He was hired asa guy on the golf course, but

(40:39):
worked his way up. And youknow he's here every day three thirty four
in the morning untill four or fiveo'clock in the afternoon. You know,
this is his this is his baby, so to say. Yeah, right,
and he loves his golf course andit shows it does. Attention to
detail and any job or any effortis very important. You can see it

(41:01):
here that he's got three or fourdifferent cuts around the greens. It's just
immacutly taken care of because everybody caresabout the golf course here. You do
groups, I assume where would theystay it by out, well, we
were one of our drawn guys fromPittsburgh, where would they stay? Okay?
We have the UAW Education Center, which is you know, part of
our eleven hundred acre complex here, and we have two hundred guest rooms down

(41:23):
there, any standard hotel room toa luxurious kind of minium. We've got
a fifty site camp around down thereas well. If you're driving up with
a fifth wheel or whatever, fullhook up and all that, and you
get all the resort amenities back thereby being on the lake, full service
gym, biking, convenience store, the whole deal back there. So all

(41:45):
right, So part of the GaylordGolf Mecca is this course in this man.
