(01:19):
Gulfing Around Radio Hour. I'm yourhost, Randy the tank Tantlinger. You
know it's kind of weird to saythis. It's June, right middle of
June. Well, first of all, it's in case you didn't know it,
Steubenville's own Dean Martin. Yes,Steubenville, Ohio's own Dean Martin done
(01:42):
pretty good for himself. I'm headingdown the Dean Martin Days in Steubenville.
So if you see the old tankerwereroaming around. I'll be dressed like that
great comedian from the seventies, JonathanWinners Mindy, much to her chagrin.
My significant other, I'm making herdress up and underline making in red,
(02:05):
making her dress up like Phyllis Dillar. For those of you in the audience
who do not know who Jonathan Wintersare. Phyllis diller Are I feel so
bad for you? Where was Igoing other than Stupenville for Dean Martin Days.
It's June, it's middle June.It feels like golf season really is
(02:25):
getting underway now, you know, eating golf in April, Well, we
were in St. Andrews and I'lltalk about that later. Golfing in the
beginning of May. You can golfand it might be raining, it might
be very cold, and Memorial Daysfunny, Yeah, never know. But
(02:46):
now it's June. In fact,it's supposed to be ninety degrees next week
and next Wednesday, I'll be outthere hacking around one thirty t off And
I don't care if it's ninety eightdegrees, because ninety eight degrees is not
yeah, thirteen degrees in February. It is not March, and freezing ninety
(03:07):
eight degrees is good for somebody thathas old circulation and old bones in his
body. But you know, golfswing season is in full swing when it's
time for America's championship, the USOpen, that is the United States Open,
(03:31):
which, in case you didn't knowit, in case you've been living
under a rock, is coming backto Oakmont in twenty twenty five. Plenty
of time to talk about that forthe next twelve months leading up to but
as of today them they're players. They're down in one of my favorite areas.
(03:54):
If you've never gotten in a car, you know, our show Golf
Around is based out of the Pittsburgharea. So it's eight hour south,
eight hour south, take that ourchoice drive through West Virginia i A which
takes forever. Then boom, you'rein Pinehurst. Eight hours that's all it
(04:16):
is. If you've never taken thetrip down there, what are you waiting
for? I mean, not onlyjust the Pinehurst Resort, Midpines Resort,
Tobacco Road golf course. If youdon't, if you've never heard about Tobacco
Road, you have to make apilgrimage play it. You will either hate
(04:42):
it or you will love it.Yeah, getting the car drive eight hours
to either play a golf course you'regonna hate or love. You know,
when I first started playing Tobacco Road, when they first opened in the two
thousands, I think it was seventyfive dollars for around the golf. It's
a little north of that now,but it's a bucket list course. And
(05:06):
again, you are either gonna loveit or hate it. Is is filled
with blind shots. They built itinside of an abandoned old rock quarry.
It's tremendous. It's awesome. Butwe are talking about the US Open being
(05:28):
played played on Pinehurst Number two.Twenty one million dollars is up for grabs
in the field this week. It'sfunny. As the thing started out,
there wasn't an American to be founduntil final and d Chambeau at two under
(05:57):
and then really a shocker on Thursday'srounds with Sergio Garcia at minus one.
We'll see what the weekend. Wouldn'tthat be something? Wouldn't that be incredible?
If Sergio pulled off another miracle? You know he did a couple of
years ago. I forget what little. I think it was the Elks Club
(06:19):
tournament he was playing in that hepulled off that miracle Cantilla five under on
Thursday. As I recruited this show, he's in. But the rest of
it really is the international field.I mean, you know my favorite Rory
(06:41):
McElroy minus three is it Rory's year? Is it Rory's year? Then it
just really falls off right now ona Thursday, as I recorded this show,
Marcal at twenty three, Brooks capriKepka sounding like Biden there for a
(07:03):
second, brooks Kopka dined at twentythree, but just a wonderful, wonderful
You know, there's special courses, you know, there's special courses to play
the US Open on. Certainly areOakmont here in Pittsburgh is one of those?
(07:30):
Right? I mean, I thinkthis will be the seventh or eighth
time that Oakmont next year will hostthe US Open, but Donald Ross's masterpiece
Number two at Pinehurst has served asthe site of more single golf championships than
any other golf course in America.Let that sink in Pinehers number two and
(07:55):
we'll get to it. I've played. It is the site of more single
golf champampionships in any other course inAmerica. It's hosted back to back US
and US women Opens Championship in twentyfourteen. That's amazing. It heads back
(08:16):
there the Men's US Open Championship intwenty nine, thirty five, forty one,
forty seven. I mean, sothis is one of the marquee courses
for the US Open. Now you'vegot to tell you I played Pinehurst number
(08:37):
two several years ago. I boy, I'd like to crack at it again
because I'm a much better golfer.I'm a much better hacker than I was.
Then. I'll start with this becauseI tell this to anybody to listen.
Pinehurst number two is the only golfcourse I've never lost a ball on.
(09:00):
I can look over at my deskand it is buried somewhere in there
amongst balls from Los Cabos, Mexico, from South Africa, from Thailand from
Iceland and there it is the ballI played. It's not a special ball.
I think it's just you know,a shricks honor, a titleist.
(09:22):
But to me, what makes itspecial is it's the only time I've ever
been able to play around a golfwithout losing the ball on Donald Ross's masterpiece
of number two at Pinehurst. Youknow, if you love golf like I
do, and you love the historyof the game, Donald Ross invokes well
(09:48):
images of a day gone by DonaldRoss. I mean, can we call
him the godfather, the grandfather ofAmerica golf? Certainly we know old Tom
Morris, right, we had knowOld Tom Morris. Well, he's the
mand right, he's demand Donald, you know. But Donald Ross, he
(10:18):
was a professional golfer. More so, he was a golf course designer.
That's his real claim. He wasborn in Scotland, moved to US as
a young man. Lord only knowshow many courses he designed in America.
He's regarded as well one of thevery best designers of all time. More
(10:41):
than eighteen seventy two in Dornick,Scotland. I've never played Royal Dornick.
We were just in Scotland again thisApril. I've got to get there,
got to play it. He wasseventy five years old Donald Ross when he
passed away in Pinehurst, North Carolina. From number two Pioneer's number two,
(11:07):
you can see Donald Ross's house fromthe fairway of number one and two.
There it is to the left. It's kind of like when you're in Saint
Andrews and you can go by OldTom Morris's house. But you talk about
the lineage of the game and itgoes from the swil Cambridge Saint Andrews to
(11:33):
today. You know, Donald Rossstarted as an apprentice to Old Tom Morris
and Saint Andrews historians guests around eighteenninety nine. You know, he decided
to later move on. He investedhis entire life savings, moved to the
United States, walked off a boatwith two dollars in his pockets. He
(12:03):
had an apprenticeship here that he wentto Royal Dorknock, his own town,
where he honed his playing abilities justtremendous. You know, he won three
North South Opens here in the US. He won the Massachusetts Open nineteen oh
(12:26):
five, nineteen eleven. He finishedfifth in the nineteen oh three US Open,
and eighth in nineteen ten. It'sa remarkable, remarkable career. But
to still have his design again,As we stated earlier, Pinehurst number two
(12:46):
has hosted more championships than any othercourse in America. That's saying a lot.
And it is Donald Ross's masterpiece, you know. Ronald Ross said of
Pinehurst number two, I sincerely believethis course is to be the fairest test
(13:07):
of championship golf I've ever designed. It is obviously the function of the championship
course to present competitors with a varietyof problems that will test every type of
shot which a golfer of championship abilityshould be qualified to play. Thus it
should be called it should call fora long and accurate te shots, accurate
(13:31):
iron play, precise handling of theshort game, and finally consistent putting.
Boy, all that holds strew today, doesn't it? I don't care if
you're playing at the Elks Club.Long and accurate tea shots, accurate iron
play, precise handling of the shortgame, and finally consistent putting. Hey,
(13:56):
you're listening to golfing around radio.I'm your Randy the Tank Tantler.
Every Saturday, We're did it upto talk about, well, the game
I love so very very much golf. You know, that's how they say
it in Saint Andrews. You know, golf. Do you want to go
golf in a laddie? Oh,come on, let's go golfing, which
(14:18):
is actually a Gaelic word for anAmerican four letter word that I won't get
into. But you know, likeI said, I had the honor to
play Pinehurst. Number two once inmy life gives a player a chance to
warm up on number one, reallydoes. It's pretty much straight down the
(14:41):
middle, you know, as beingCrosby likes to say number two is trd.
I mean good. You warmed upon number one at the two thousand
and five US Open. It wasthe hardest hole, hardest hole. The
(15:05):
approach into the green is very difficult. It's heavily bunkered from front to right.
It's a tough hole. There's nodoubt a buy it. Number three
is a par four once again sandin play man. See that's the thing
(15:26):
about North Carolina. You know alot of times it's called the sand Hills.
You know, it's built on asand bass. So you take Donald
Ross from Dornoch, from Scotland, who's used to playing links golf. In
case you don't know, links golfcourses in the UK are built on sand
bassis. No wonder. Donald Rosscreated this masterpiece at number Pioneer's number two
(15:58):
on a sand bass. You know, the sixth hole is a par three
and it is a beast. Itis a beast. It's the sixth most
difficult hole on the course. Bunkerscatch anything hit a little offline, severe
(16:22):
slopes off to the front. Thegreen repel shots hit short of the target.
It just how do explain the greenshere at Pineish number two. They're
like domes. They're like playing ontop of domes. Is the best way
(16:42):
to describe it. It really is. It's a magnificent course. If you
ever get a chance, I mean, when I go back to Pinehurst,
when I go back to that area, the Pinehurst sand Hills area, you
can rest assure that Pineheer's Number twoand Tobacco Road will be on the list
(17:07):
to play. They must. Allright, you're listening to Randy tank tailor
you're on the gulfing around Red.We're gonna take a commercial break. Come
back, we're gonna talk more aboutPineheer's number two, we're gonna talk about
how you can win a trip toScotland. Well, basically, we're gonna
talk about golf, ungolf it around. Gettysburg's history has had a dramatic impact
(17:33):
on how we see our country andourselves. These hallowed battlefields, legendary landmarks,
and powerful memorials tell our story likenowhere else can as a profound,

Gettysburg's history has had a dramatic impacton how we see our country and
ourselves. These hallowed battlefields, legendarylandmarks, and powerful memorials tell our story
like nowhere else can as a profound, inspired personal experience. There has never
been a better, more meaningful timeto visit Gettysburg, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania for
(19:12):
the people. Welcome back to theGolfing around radio hour. I'm your host,
Randy the Tank Tantlinger. It iswell, it's golf season. It's
a full swing forgiving the bun.You know. We are talking about the
US Open this weekend on the hallowedgrounds of Pinehurst number two. And again,
(19:38):
if you've never been to the region, there is just so much good
golf in that area. It's calledthe sand Hills of North Carolina. For
whatever reason, you've got a tonof sandbase there. I guess you got
to go talk to some geologist andhe'll explain and you back in the pale
(20:03):
Anolithic error or whatever, that dinosaursdied and now they're standing there. And
it makes for really good golf coursesbecause it's like links golf courses in Scotland.
But if you've never played Pinehurst numbertwo. It's an incredible golf course.
(20:23):
As I said in the first segment, it's the only golf course I
have never lost a golf ball on, and that's pretty remarkable considering that I
really stink and I'm a hacker. Now I can talk to all of you
and pontificate about golf and the oldswing and all those things, but the
(20:45):
actual swinging of the club sometimes, well that's where the old tanker here struggles
for darnshore. But that doesn't meanI can't appreciate the history that goes with
Pinehurst number two. When I playedit that I'd have some good shots along
(21:07):
the way. I love the gameso much. I had a great short
game. I do, I reallydo. I got a really good short
game and I can put like amadman. Years ago in Ireland, pro
told me get down on the greenand look at the green, which is
(21:29):
highly illegal to do if you're aprofessional golfer. It is amazing after playing
that one round of golf in Ireland, what happened to my putting? Whatever
you think you're seeing looking down ona green. Remember Viegas ten years ago
they called him spider Man, andget down. I'm telling you if you
(21:52):
got down on your belly on theground and looked at the green like I
did, you go oh, oh, my gosh, I didn't even see
that. That bump on the left, that ridge to the right, the
undulation, the fall off made theworld difference. I can pot. I
(22:18):
was up in Gaylord, Michigan. They have a great Part three course up
there, probably the best in theCountry's one where Lee Trevino won a million
dollars on a home one. Ifyou remember that on ESPN about ten years
ago, and I was drinking andchattering away and my buddy said to me,
goes, do you realize you justsunk every single put? I go,
(22:41):
really, I didn't even notice thatanyway, So hey, if I
can get another drink here before weyou know. I it just when I
don't think I can play the gamelike many of us, eludes me off
the tea box. I'm old,I'm fat, and I can't make the
turn. But again, because I'ma high handicapper doesn't mean I don't appreciate
(23:03):
the beauty, the masterpiece, theartistry that goes into well a golf course
like Pinehurst Number two. I meanyou really have to play it, then,
have played a Lynx course in Scotlandand you can see what Donald Ross
(23:25):
was doing when he designed it.He was mimicking the sand dunes of Royal
Dorknock of Saint Andrews. The onlything that was missing was the ocean that
he had on the Lynx courses inScotland. Here he has pine trees,
(23:45):
plenty of them, and I thinkthat's why I didn't lose the ball.
I know it's why I didn't losethe ball when I played there. If
you didn't miss the first segment,I was talking about how the only golf
ball I've never lost, and it'sin my treasure trove of golf balls,
is the round of golf I playedon Pinehurst Number two. The pine trees
(24:06):
surround the golf course pine needles areso soft. It smells like pine everywhere,
and it's really hard to lose theball because if you've never played down
there or on pine needles, theball just sits up and it is in
stark. The whiteness of your ballis in stark contrast to the brown of
(24:30):
the pine needles. So I treasurethat ball, and I treasure that round
of golf at Pinehurst Number two, many many many years ago. Now,
you know, we talked a littlebit about the back nine, the front
nine. You know, once youget rolling, it is an amazing golf
(24:56):
course. When you get to thenine, number ten is the longest hole
on the golf course. It mayfor the US Open, it's playing at
six hundred and seventeen yards. Yeah, but you got to throw in Bryce
and d Chambeau when you think aboutthose things. You got to think about
(25:21):
Bruce kept cut. When you thinkabout six seventeen for a whole, number
ten par five on Pinehurst number two. Now for you and I, the
tips are five e the forwards arefour twenty nine, all manageable for a
(25:42):
par five. But you know, they really had to lengthen the course for
the US Open. They don't evenopen those tea boxes up for well hackers
like me and you. I don'teven care if you're a six handicap.
You don't need to be playing no. Six hundred yards you damned you know.
(26:06):
The eleventh hole it's a very criticalhole. The fairway opens wide.
But you know what, that's theimpression you have off the tea box.
You got to come over the sanddunes, the sand on your t shots
hit the fairway and it looks open, but it pinches, it pinches,
(26:29):
and it's a narrow fairway. Onnumber eleven, then of course well guarded,
well guarded green once again. Wholenumber twelve is one of my favorites.
Again, you gotta go over thesand traps to get off the t's
(26:52):
dog leg, right, but yougot to be so accurate when you do
that. The pine trees are framingthe fairway on both sides. It's the
green that is just nasty. Onnumber twelve, I mean it is just
nasty. Two massive bunkers on theright side, the left side to the
(27:18):
front. You know, Donald Rossdidn't mess around, you know, like
you're like, why did he puta bunker in the back on a new
course because it looks good, Yeah, but it doesn't really guard the green.
And you know Donald Ross was tryingto make you work to get par
(27:40):
with his green complexes. You know, when you go into the stretch of
Pinehurst, Number two is the boyswill on Sunday. This is where the
world work comes into play. Wholesixteen's par five. It's five twenty nine
from the US Open tes that theguys will be playing there's a little bit
(28:07):
of water in the front. It'sthe second most difficult key. There are
bunker and in the fairway that comeinto play. Yeah fairway. Now they're
not pott bunkers in the middle likein Scotland, but they are big and
they are deep on the sides ofthe fairway. Then you get up to
(28:32):
the green complex and anything can happenup that way. I mean, the
right is nothing but trouble. Thewhole green slants and tilts to the left
or there's a major bunker and aleft side waiting for you. So if
you can get through sixteen and shockup your par five, you're pretty happy.
(28:57):
Seventeen is your chance. Whoever's inthe lead, number seventeen on Pinehurst
number two, it's a par three. The US Open ties, they'll be
playing some there two hundred and fiveyards. That ain't nothing. It seems
like these guys hit a pitching wedgetwo five anymore. Now. Accuracy,
(29:22):
accuracy is key here. It's nota big green by any means. And
once again the master himself, DonaldRoss, has put traps into play.
You know there is one in theback. I was just talking about.
You put a trap in the backjust because it looks good. Well,
(29:45):
the green on seventeen is so deadly. How do I explain this to you?
Think of a dome trying to puton top of a dome. All
right, the sides just slammed off. You know where you'd get that second
(30:06):
cut on the green, Well, that's where the dome comes in. It's
a straight drop into the bunkers. It's a brilliant part three for the pros.
They should be able to score then, of course whole number eighteen.
The gallery will be gathered on Sunday. We harkened to the twenty fifth anniversary
(30:33):
of Payne Stewart's ninety nine Open victory. It was an amazing finish. He
hit his drive into the right handrough punched it out short of the green.
He hit a webshot to about fifteenfeet from there and he calmly rolled
(30:56):
in the uphill putt to win hissecond. That's open. Did Payne Stewart
with that infamous fist pump, whichif you go to Pinehurst, I'm sure
they'll show it many times. Thisweekend you'll see the Paine Stewart statue.
It is a tremendous golf course.Donald Ross's absolute genius and again he was
(31:22):
an apprentice of old Tom Morris inScotland. There's a lot of Donald Ross
enthusiasts out there that they play DonaldRoss golf courses because they'd love the heritage
of the game. If you everget a chance again. My two favorite
in the area Tobacco Road. You'lllove it or you'll hate it. It's
(31:44):
built inside of an old sand quarry, so many blind shots. Watch out
for the black widow spiders. Yes, I really mean that. If you
didn't think they're real, or ifyou don't think they got him down in
North Carolina, you'd be a littlebit wrong about that. Tobacco Road.
Pinehurst number two. It's worth again. We record golfing around here in Pittsburgh,
(32:07):
Pennsylvania, my hometown. It's eighthours. Get in the car,
wake up at five. You're playinggolf by two, all right, we'll

(33:37):
people. Hey, welcome back tothe Golfing around radio hour. Yeah baby,
it is us open time. Youknow. In the last two segments
we talked a lot about Pinehurst Numbertwo, Donald Ross, the grandfather of
American golf, the links concepts thathe brought from Scotland to the sand hills
(34:05):
of North Carolina. I want totalk now about Well, this is our
third year for the Team Lesa versusTeam Scotland Amateur Golf Championships. Third year.
Boy, how quick it's gone. And I want to thank the guys
here at Fox Sports Radio, GregBoomer, and of course my old buddy
(34:27):
up there at the Wheeling Country Club, Rich Gunwell for taking a shot with
us a couple of years ago.It is not easy building something from the
ground up. You have a dream, you have a vision, and you
only achieve these things because people aroundyou help you. And both Rich and
(34:47):
Greg I know you guys know thatI appreciate everything he did. And by
the way, the old tankers feelingbetter. The old saw bones figured out
what was going on. So Conwell, Well, I will be back to
Wheeling Country Club to disturb you atsome point this summer. I know you're
listening. Conwell, I know you'relistening. By the way, if you
(35:09):
don't know about the Wheeling Country Club, go see Rich Conwell. They have
memberships for a day. It isa wonderful golf course right here in Wheeling,
West Virginia. Just a tremendous facility, great pool, great food,
great people. And I am reallyoverdue to get down there and see Rich
(35:30):
and the good folks at the WheelingCountry Club. It's a wonderful place.
Go see Rich. Talk about amembership, Get a membership for the day.
It's a great golf course. Younever get bored playing it. I
mean you can play from the forwardt's, you can play from the tips
and you're going to get all youwant at the Wheeling Country Club. So
(35:52):
it is the third year for theTeam USA versus Team Scotland Amateur Golf Championships.
So Tank Scotland, I like whatyou're talking about. Well, what
is it? Well let me tellyou what it is. So first of
all, you do not need anofficial USGA handicap to play in our events
(36:15):
for a chance to win a tripto Saint Andrews, Scotland. Again,
you do not need a USGA handicap. What we do is we have five
flights. Five flights one to five, six to eleven, six to ten,
I mean eleven to fifteen, sixteento twenty and twenty one and over.
(36:36):
You get the idea, right,So ask yourself. All right,
I'm at thirteen and I ain't gotno USGA handicap. That's fine, okay,
Well we will put you in theten to fifteen flight at the Team
USA National Championships in Gettysburg August tenthand eleventh at the Carrol Valley Golf Course
(37:01):
at the Liberty Mountain Resort in Gettysburg. You'll play two competitive rounds Saturday,
August tenth Sunday August eleventh. You'llplay other golfers in your flight of ten
to fifteen. It's really simple. If you shoot within your flight. Let's
(37:23):
say you get hot and you shoota ten, maybe you win your flight.
You win a trip to Saint Andrewsin twenty twenty five to be a
member of Team USA. If youshoot above your flight, shoot a seventeen,
Guess what you're dq'ed from the competition? All right, how will you
(37:44):
eliminate sambagging if we don't ask fora USGA handicap. Let's say you think
you're slick, Well, I'm athirteen handicap. Uh huh, Well I
got hot over the two days.I actually shot at a seven. Well,
guess where you get scored. Youget scored down there. We score
you what your final score is inthe flight that you shot at. If
(38:07):
you got really hot on the firstday, like insane, and shot out
of your flight and below we moveyou into that flight. We do not
tolerate samdbagging. But here's the thing. Log onto USA Scotland Golf dot com.
USA Scotland Golf dot Com check outthe videos. First National Championship was
(38:30):
in Latrobe, second was in Gettysburg. Last year. We're back in Gettysburg
again this year at the Well. It's a golf Digest four star resort at
Carroll Valley. It's gorgeous. Registerto play at USA Scotland Golf dot com.
(38:51):
Register to playing one f five flights. Win your flight in Gettysburg,
you'll be crowned a Team USA Nationalchampion. We present you with this beautiful
trophy that is your your your trophy. It's a sword, Scotland sword.
Get it right. I mean allour guys that have won so far,
(39:14):
that have gone to Scotland been TeamUSA champions, I say, what do
you do? What do you dowith your trophy? Your sword? Every
single one of them says it's eitherabove their fireplace at home or it's mounted
on the wall in their man cave. Maybe you will have a chance to
