Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Guardians Weekly on the Cleveland Guardians Radio Network.
Guardians Weekly is brought to you by Progressive helping Guardians
fans save hundreds on car insurance.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Hi, everyone, welcome to Guardian's Weekly. Jim Rosenhouse along with
you from Progressive Field in downtown Cleveland. And fortunately this
is the start of our off season shows. We thought
we might be in Seattle with the season continuing and
the Guardians in the American League Division Series, but not
(01:12):
to be, as they were eliminated in the Wildcard round
by the Detroit Tigers after one of the most glorious
Septembers in franchise history, a record setting comeback for the
Guardians as they wiped out a fifteen and a half
game deficit to Detroit. At one point in time, that
is the largest comeback literally in Major League history, and
(01:34):
we will get to much more on that as we
continue our show today. We will go with a full
look at the week in review. What a wild week
this has been with two clinchings of postseason birth a
Division championship and then the Wildcard Series, and we will
get to all of that. One final look back at
the finishing stages of what turned out to be a
(01:58):
remarkable twenty twenty five season for the Guardians. That comes
your way shortly on the Cleveland Plantic Guardians Radio Network.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
The Post Crip Assembly Prescot Dressy Progressive. Michael, you had
some trouble putting the crip together today? What went wrong?
Speaker 4 (02:14):
You know those instructions can be tough, and well you
saw the outcome here.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
You've saved when your wife pulled you and called in
the backup.
Speaker 3 (02:20):
No, I mean the baby needs a cred to sleep,
and so whatever it takes. You've got a changing table
to put together. Next, it's got a lot of drawers.
What's your coming.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
We're done here, like it or not.
Speaker 6 (02:30):
Sometimes you need a backup. That's why there's Progressive to
protect your home in Auto Progressive CAKESHL teamjerms coimping aphilias
and other insuris not available in those states of situations.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
Welcome back to Guardians Weekly. Jim rosannounced back with you
at Progressive Field in downtown Cleveland, and this has been
the scene of some wild baseball days and nights in
the last week to ten days and a remarkable finish
to the twenty twenty five season. Then we will start
right there with our weekend review going back to Sunday.
(03:07):
After the Guardians had clinched a postseason berth on Saturday,
they had a clubhouse celebration then and then it was
on to Sunday with a chance to win the American
League Central Division and make history for the greatest comeback
of all time. Fifteen and a half games. At one point,
the Guardians were behind the first place Detroit Tigers. That
(03:30):
was back on July the eighth, and they had a
chance to wipe it out completely and win the division
last Sunday with the Texas Rangers as the opponent for
the regular season finale. And while that game was moving
along a little bit further east at Fenway Park in Boston,
the Tigers were playing the Boston Red Sox and the
(03:50):
Guardians were in the seventh inning with Texas leading five
to four, when the news broke that the game had
gone final in Boston.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
This place, everybody standing, roaring, it's over. Buston has beaten Detroit.
Cleveland's won the division title. Bow nailor cuts and misses.
What a response from this crowd of over thirty one thousand.
Speaker 3 (04:27):
The you people are incredible.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
Thirteenth American League Central Division title four, more than any
other club in the al Central Minnesota with nine, so.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
The division crown was secured. Nothing at all left to
play for, But don't tell that to the twenty twenty
five Cleveland Guardians, especially that team that played down the stretch.
They scored a run in the eighth to tie the
game at five that sent it to extra innings. Then
in the top of the tenth, Texas had two men
up and they're big man who always hits Guardians. Pitching well,
(05:05):
Rowdy Teles was at the plate.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Now the two to two swung on hid high in
the air to deep right field. Back is Valeria at
the wall. That is gone and Tules has done it
again against Cleveland. He is unbelievable when facing Cleveland. Rowdy
Tules with a pinch hit, three run home run and
(05:28):
Texas now has the lead eight to five in the tenth.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
So it looked like a Texas win, but still a
celebration for the Guardians. A big hole to climb out
of in the bottom of the tenth and bow Naylor
would get things started.
Speaker 1 (05:45):
The runner at second takes off first ball swinging, bow
Nailor rips one up the alley in right center that'll score.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Valera Naylor on his way.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
To second, sliding in with an RBI double.
Speaker 3 (05:58):
Bone nailor he doubled.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
In the eighth, scored the tying run, jumped on the
very first pitch from Corneel.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
Here in the.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Tenth, Bede Halpin followed with a walk, and that brought
Brian Rocchio to the plate.
Speaker 1 (06:13):
Champagne awaits another celebration, and yet they're trying to finish
it with a win.
Speaker 3 (06:20):
The one two pitch swung at that blessed deep to right.
Speaker 4 (06:26):
Down the line off the park.
Speaker 3 (06:32):
Can you believe that?
Speaker 7 (06:38):
Oh, Freddy run walked off home run off the follow
ball and right Brian Rochio circling the basis.
Speaker 3 (06:49):
Now getting mob. Think of any words you want.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
And prop implausible, impossible.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
They all work.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
A four run tenth inning highlighted by a walk off,
game winning three run home run off the foul poland
right by Brian Rokiel and the Cleveland Guardians ended in style.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
An unbelievably incredible day at the ballpark for the Guardians,
and the party was on for the second day in
a row in the Cleveland Clubhouse. Let's listen in to
that celebration again.
Speaker 1 (07:41):
You get punched in the faith, and every time we
put right back, we get up and we fight division
freaking chance boys, and we ain't done.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
Let's right, and there you have it.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
It is underway.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
These champagne corks are flying all over the place. I'm
not sure how, but there's more people here today than
there were last night, and it is on as the
champagne is flying, and the fun has begun and we
will get some guests going. But it is a free
for all down here, much more so than last night,
(08:31):
as we expected. And his beautiful new clubhouse is now
a party room. The music's going, the corks have popped,
and we are joined now by Guardian's general manager Mike
churn Off and churning you at you had this predicted
back in July, right, Yeah, I.
Speaker 5 (08:48):
Don't know who wouldn't absolutely, I mean, yes, yes, you
know what. This group has been so resilient.
Speaker 8 (08:53):
It's been amazing to watch him go through a lot
of ups and downs that we've had a lot of
adversity that we fought, and it's pretty amazing to watch
that they never they never let go of the faith.
Speaker 5 (09:03):
Pretty impressive.
Speaker 2 (09:05):
You never, really, you do your your due diligence, but
you never really know for sure until he's in the
heat of battle. You hired a manager two years ago
and Steven Vote, who was an unknown quantity. What did
he show you this year that kept this thing going?
Speaker 8 (09:17):
Yeah, I mean, look, we saw it last year, but
last year was very different.
Speaker 5 (09:20):
We got off to a huge lead early on in
the season.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
This year was completely different and we had to fight through.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
A lot more.
Speaker 5 (09:26):
This year.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
We had a tough first half.
Speaker 8 (09:28):
We had a tough you know, July with some of
the issues that we had, tough trade deadline obviously, and
Steven kept his focus.
Speaker 5 (09:35):
On the right things.
Speaker 8 (09:36):
He kept this group motivated whatever happened. He was able
to help the group shut that out and focus what
was on the field.
Speaker 3 (09:42):
Pretty impressive.
Speaker 4 (09:43):
Oh, thank you, Chris.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
That is quite cold right now.
Speaker 5 (09:45):
Quite cold.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
The Champagne's never warm night.
Speaker 5 (09:47):
You know what, I'll take it.
Speaker 3 (09:48):
I love it.
Speaker 5 (09:49):
It feels so good.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Mike, congratulations, Thank you, Thanks Rosie. That's Mike Churnoff, freshly
anointed with a serious champagne shower and next online Guardians
owner Paul Dolan and Paul, what an incredible run for
this team that they've had a tremendous run of consistency
(10:10):
reaching the postseason. But what about this year from your seed?
Did you see this happening in July?
Speaker 3 (10:16):
I'm not sure how to answer that question. In July,
I'm not sure.
Speaker 9 (10:21):
I thought they would be covered in Champagne in September
here like that. I know we had a lot in us,
whether we had this much.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
I mean, this is the story.
Speaker 9 (10:29):
It's never been done in Major League Baseball history, what
this team has done. So we're extraordinarily proud of them
and looking forward to finding out what more than got
in them.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
You own the team, but you're a fan too. How
enjoyable has this team been to watch this whole.
Speaker 9 (10:41):
Stretch has been unbelievably enjoyable at that, But I mean
they never ceased to amaze and surprise us. But but
you know it's in them and you know they can
do it, and they just proved it again today.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
In your baseball operations team, that the consistency, there's no
windows here where there's a rebuild or anything like that.
Speaker 5 (11:00):
They do it.
Speaker 9 (11:01):
I mean, I wish I knew what the secret sauce is,
but yes, you're absolutely right. It's it's all about player
development and how they work with people. The culture, the
culture that they've created here, the leadership skills that they show,
the never give up, the constantly focus on improvement.
Speaker 5 (11:19):
All those things lead today's.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
Like this really important question. Why are you the wettest
person in the room right off the bat?
Speaker 5 (11:25):
How did that happen?
Speaker 1 (11:26):
Not only to others you're on the wettest, but I
don't know how you would be wetter than I am
right now.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
Well, you enjoy yourself, Paul Dolan, thanks for coming by.
Thank you had his guardian's owner. Paul Dolan and Tom.
I know you talk about it a lot. It starts
at the top, and it just seems like that man
right there has a great feel for letting people do
their jobs very well.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
I don't think people in this region of the state
or this part of the country realize how lucky we
have been that the Dolan family owns this ball club.
The proof is in the pudding. If they're not in
the playoffs every year, they're in contention every year.
Speaker 2 (12:06):
Who else can say that? It's it's really remarkable. And
I'll tell you what. He is drenched, absolutely drenched. We'll
keep it going down here, Bow Naylor stopping by. It's
the Nightly Bow Naylor Show. How do you do from both?
Speaker 5 (12:18):
Get used to this?
Speaker 3 (12:20):
Absolutely?
Speaker 2 (12:21):
I think there was a day between last year's celebrations
at the end of the season. Uh, today's game. Take
us through the emotions of that game. How closely I
mean you're in it. How closely are you watching the
scoreboard and knowing what's happening up at Fenway Park in Boston.
Speaker 10 (12:36):
Me personally, I wanted to keep my mind focused on,
you know, what we had in front of us, and
that was our game.
Speaker 5 (12:43):
Excuse me? Yeah?
Speaker 10 (12:44):
Uh so that that was for you know me personally,
I want to make sure that I was doing my best,
have of mind the right spot for the guy on
the mound, try to help him.
Speaker 5 (12:52):
But uh yeah, I mean you know you could.
Speaker 10 (12:54):
You can feel the vibes when you know they realize
what we've done, you know, the crowd cheering the high five.
So to be able to kind of know what had happened,
seeing all of our work come, you know, come to life.
It's it's it's awesome.
Speaker 2 (13:10):
Bo, thanks for coming by. I'm gonna talk to your
campadre Austin Hedges.
Speaker 5 (13:13):
Awesome.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
VI that is Bo Naylor And uh, all right, we're
gonna try something here.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
I have Austin hedges, but.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
You want to talk to Hammy. I want to talk
to him, all right? Hold on, what the head's up?
Speaker 3 (13:24):
Hold on?
Speaker 5 (13:25):
Tom Hemmy?
Speaker 3 (13:27):
How are you? My friend?
Speaker 11 (13:28):
I mean I made a promise to you, didn't I.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
You did, and you're always a man of your word.
First off, Austin, congratulations? What me and Austin? It's interesting
because we're ramping it up here against Texas. The Ranger
people in visiting with them were saying, you, guys probably
don't know how important he was to our winning the
World Series in twenty twenty three. And I know it's
(13:51):
never about you, but by golly, this time it is.
And it's not a coincidence that we brought you back.
We've been in the playoffs the last two years. I
know you're humble about it, but what is it that
you try to bring and instill in a ball club
that has been so successful here in Texas for instance?
Speaker 11 (14:13):
I mean, I was very, very fortunate to go to
Texas in twenty three And the beauty of winning the
World Series is you actually get to, you know, experience
what it's like to get there, and you now know
the roadmap of actually how to finish the job. If
you haven't done it before, you have an idea of
what to do, you have an idea of how to
get there, but you don't really know. So getting to
(14:34):
be able to, you know, being a part of that
experience just opened up, you know, so many possibilities of
the things that I felt like I could do to help,
you know, another ball club, especially here in Cleveland, you know,
get to that ultimate, ultimate championship. And so I'm very
grateful for for the Rangers for giving me that opportunity.
And I'm just trying to I'm just trying to spread
(14:57):
some of some of the things that I learned with
them over here. In this group just buys in. They
believe in each other. All they care about is winning.
It's such a selfless group and that's really what it
comes down to. It's a group that comes together, uh
and and does something that's bigger than themselves. And I'm
just really really proud of this group right now.
Speaker 1 (15:15):
Tell you what, you are some kind of special teammate
and a special guy, and we're so lucky to have you.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
Thank you, I appreciate you.
Speaker 5 (15:22):
Hammy awesome stuff there.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
There's definitely a different feel, I think, a real sense
of tremendous accomplishment.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
And the man who has led.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
This team out is Stephen Boat manager maybe manager of
the year again, And I know you don't want to
talk about that at this time, but it's Stephen. What
a typical day today for this year's edition of The
Cleveland Guardian.
Speaker 12 (15:43):
Absolutely, you never know what you're gonna see, Rosie, you
know that with us, and I couldn't be more proud
of this group of guys. They've been knocked down, they've
been kicked, they've been and they just came all the
way back and took the division.
Speaker 5 (15:56):
And I couldn't be more proud of them when you.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
Look at at all the different contributors. Brian Rochio with
the home run that wins it. We were just talking
with Tom about how it's not just Jose Ramirez and
Stephen Kwan now there's others and how excited does that
have you heading into the postseason knowing that everyone's contributing.
Speaker 12 (16:14):
Now it's huge and you know John Kinsey with a
big swing today, and you know Manzo with a pinch
hit double.
Speaker 5 (16:19):
I mean, it's everybody.
Speaker 12 (16:21):
It takes all twenty eight of us, and on Tuesday,
it'll take all twenty six of us. It's just the
way it works, and you never know when your moments come,
and that's why everybody plays.
Speaker 5 (16:31):
That's why we play everybody.
Speaker 12 (16:32):
That's why we use the whole bench, we use the
whole bullpen, because you never know in that moment.
Speaker 5 (16:36):
Zach Kent stepped up in a huge way.
Speaker 12 (16:39):
Yes, he gave up the three year on Homer, but man,
did he pitch a great ninth and he's been tremendous.
So you never know when it's gonna be your time.
And we've had numerous people step up all year long.
Speaker 2 (16:49):
And tell us about managing today with what you wanted
to accomplish. But then there's scoreboard things going on from
Fenway Park. How are you dealing with all of that
as the game went on?
Speaker 12 (16:58):
Yeah, I mean we you know, obviously, I'm I probably
watched the scoreboard more today than I ever have before
and I don't ever want.
Speaker 5 (17:04):
To do it again.
Speaker 12 (17:05):
So but yeah, as soon as we got the news
that we were in, now we knew that we could
save you know, Caid for you know, for Tuesday.
Speaker 5 (17:12):
So Zach stepped up in a huge way.
Speaker 12 (17:14):
Guys, first career win today, Rosie zach Kid first career win,
Brian Rokio walk off homer. I' what a cool story, man, Like,
they're gonna remember that for the rest of their life.
They're gonna tell their kids about it, their grandkids that
I got to win the day that we clinched the division.
Speaker 5 (17:27):
You can't write this stuff. It's baseball.
Speaker 2 (17:29):
Guys appreciate it. I'm sure you know this, but players
appreciate you giving them opportunities, especially when they first come up,
and continuing to believe in them and it's led to
a great season.
Speaker 12 (17:40):
Yeah, these guys. I love these guys. I feel like
they're my kids. I feel I'm just the same age
as some of them. But it's so much fun watching
people have success. That's why I love working in baseball.
That's why I love this job, because we get to
watch these players have success every day and it's so
much fun.
Speaker 5 (17:56):
Voter, thank you, Thank you, Rosie.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
So quite a fit finished to the regular season for
the Guardians, and that set the stage with yet another
meeting with a team that is turning into an arch rival,
the Detroit Tigers in the American League Wildcard Series, and
we'll get to that. Next the Cleveland Clinic Guardians Radio Network,
(18:36):
Jim Rosenow's back with you at Progressive Field in downtown Cleveland.
It is Guardians Weekly, and unfortunately we have begun our
off season shows as the season is complete for the
Guardians following the American League Wildcard Series won by Detroit
two games to one. But what a tight, tense three
game series that Wildcard series was, and we review that
(18:58):
now for you the op day on Monday to get
ready for the postseason Game one Guardians and Tigers on Tuesday.
And as you'd expect, runs would be tough to come
by with a pitching matchup of Trek Scubel and Gavin Williams.
But the Tigers struck first with two out in the
first inning, Spencer Torkelsen at the plate.
Speaker 1 (19:18):
Torkulsen thirty one bombs this year, seventy eight RBIs. He
hits a little bloop job in the left base hit
that gets the Tigers on the board and the air
comes back to haunt Cleveland. A little bloop single to
left and Spencer Torkulsen has given Detroit a one nothing
laid on an unearned run.
Speaker 2 (19:39):
It stayed one nothing Detroit until the fourth. That's when
the Guardians got something going with their typical small ball
approach on hell. Martinez singled, then a walk to Jose
Ramirez brought Gabriel Arius to the plate. The lefty delivers
and Arius chops it off the plate behind the mound.
Speaker 3 (19:56):
Scooble grabs it, picks it up, throws hawk.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
I'm coming home, and Martinez he he's out at the plate.
Scooble had it hit his glove well behind the mound,
but he stayed with it, turned and fired home as
Martinez tried to race home from second, and the Guardians
want to challenge the play at the plate. They're still
(20:20):
looking it over in New York. Obviously a huge play
here we go, well, unfortunately we can't pick up the umpire,
but you can tell from the crowd they overturned the call.
He's safe and home plate and the Guardians have tied
(20:42):
this game at one. And after giving up the unner
and run in the first inning, Gavin Williams was locked
in on the mound the one two curb ball called
Strength three, dropped it on the inside corner at the knees.
Sderytired in order. Another strong inning for Davin Williams. In
the seventh, the Tigers try to take advantage of a
(21:03):
Cleveland error. They had runners at the corners with one
out for Zach McKinstry.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Again the infield part way in mckinstray left handed batter,
this cent the pitch he bunts first base side in
the beauty picked up by Noel flips to first safety
squeeze scores Riley Green Tigers taking a page out of
Cleveland's book.
Speaker 2 (21:27):
And with the lead Tiger Ace and likely Cy Young
Award winner Derek Scubele went back to work.
Speaker 3 (21:33):
Scooball into the wine.
Speaker 1 (21:35):
Here it comes, got him swinging change up fourteen stray
outs for Schooball.
Speaker 3 (21:42):
That's the best and he has struck up five in
a row.
Speaker 2 (21:47):
Kate Smith shut down the Tigers in the top half
of the ninth. Then he to keep it a one
run game. And it was Jose Ramirez trying to ignite
the offense leading off the bottom of the ninth.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
Now the one to one delivery swung banged up the middle,
diving stopped by bias from his knees.
Speaker 3 (22:03):
Throw the first in the dirt got away from Tarkol.
Speaker 1 (22:06):
Said brows down the right field life Hosey hit second
piece on his win at the third.
Speaker 3 (22:14):
About that.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
Detroit reliever Will Vest struck out George Valera for the
first out of the inning and the next batter was
Kyle Manzardo.
Speaker 1 (22:24):
Now the set and pitch, swinging the topper to the mound,
coming home with it his Vest. Ramirez in a rundown,
tagged out by Vest at first. Man Zardo Hosey on
a top or back to the pitcher had no chance
and was an easy.
Speaker 3 (22:43):
Out at home plate.
Speaker 2 (22:46):
Yeah, that was Jose Ramirez trying to be aggressive running
on contact by the Tigers make the play at the plate,
and that set up one last chance for the Guardians
with c. J. Kapos at the plate.
Speaker 3 (22:58):
Two down runner at first, two to one to Troy.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
He pops it up shallow, left, Bias out green and
Bias is there to make the catch and the Tigers
win Game one, two to one.
Speaker 2 (23:12):
So the Guardians were facing elimination on Wednesday, Game two
of the series, the best two out of three, remember,
and a wild start to this one as the first
two Tiger hitters reached, but it didn't seem to face
Tanner byby on the mound for the Guardians.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
Runner stayed the pitch strike three called he knew it.
What a curveball. Wow.
Speaker 1 (23:32):
So Tanner Biby gets the first out of the game.
Torkle sent the pitch to him and he cuts and misses.
He struck him out. Two down on two strikeouts. Now
the dangerous Riley Green off speed got him swinging.
Speaker 3 (23:49):
What a job, Bye, Biby, and they're on.
Speaker 1 (23:52):
Their feet at the corner of Carnegie and a fist
pump from Tanner Baby two on nobody out Hey strike
out Carpenter, Torkl sinning Green.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
Then in the bottom of the first inning, some power
from an unlikely source in George Valera.
Speaker 3 (24:08):
Payoff swung in hit a ton date bright center field.
Speaker 5 (24:13):
This ball on.
Speaker 1 (24:18):
Hebout sixteen major league games in the regular season, and
George Valera into the teeth of a strong win with
a solo home run the right center Wow. One nothing
Cleveland here and ending number one, and that gets this
crowd into it.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
It stayed one nothing Guardians until the fourth inning. That's
when the Tigers offense got going. A double and a
pair of walks loaded the bases with two men out,
and the dangerous veteran hitter Hobby Baiez at the plate, oh,
and won the count on Biez. Here's Bibby's pitch swung
on crowdball near the middle on through base at center
(24:59):
field is in.
Speaker 3 (25:00):
They're going to wave Dingler around. The throw goes to third.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
Safe at third base is McKinstry has Dingler crossed home
plate and the Tigers take a two to one lead
on the two run single from Biaz who moves up
to second on the throw. Very close play at third
and the Guardians want to challenge what big point in
(25:28):
this game. The Guardians as it stands right now are
trailing two to one, but we'll see if that changes
based on the replay review.
Speaker 3 (25:35):
Here we go after review the call the feel is
overturned Thursday. Also, the second run does not count.
Speaker 2 (25:45):
Wow, a double win for the Guardians. Gunner will helmy
early candidate for Game MVP.
Speaker 3 (25:54):
He is the video replay review coordinator for the Guardians.
Speaker 2 (25:58):
So the Viggers do score the tying run, but the
out at third and negates that second run and ends
the inning. We will head to the fifth tied at
one in downtown Cleveland. Once again, great defense by the
Guardians a staple for them, especially down the stretch, so
still tied at one. In the seventh, the Tigers again
(26:19):
threatened after the first two men reached, but out of
the bullpen for the Guardians, Tim Herron stepped up in
a big way.
Speaker 1 (26:26):
Tigers at the corners, two down in the seventh. Here's
the two strike pitch s last high heat got a
oh and Tim Herrod, he never shows emotion, pumping his
fist screaming coming off the mound.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Jacob Junas shut down Detroit in the top half of
the eighth inning. Then in the bottom of the inning,
the man they call playoff Rochio stepped in.
Speaker 3 (26:54):
The next pitch, swung on, hit a ton deep right field,
got a.
Speaker 11 (26:59):
Chance go.
Speaker 1 (27:03):
Bryan Rochiel Sunday game winner up the Foe poll today
game leading solo shut to the seats in right and
Cleveland's got a two to one lead bottom of the
eighth inning.
Speaker 2 (27:21):
And that was just the beginning of a beginning for
the Guardians, as Stephen Kwan followed with a double and
then Daniel Schneeman delivered Sneam and Rickson.
Speaker 1 (27:30):
In the right pens of Ie hid it'll go to
the wall in the scores con in the second is
Sneeman and back to back doubles and Cleveland's got a
three to one lead.
Speaker 3 (27:44):
This club is found away.
Speaker 1 (27:45):
In the eighth homer double double off the kid Troy Mountain.
Speaker 2 (27:51):
Jose Ramirez was intentionally walked, putting two on and two
out for bow Nailer.
Speaker 3 (27:57):
A swing in a high drive deep break back goes
Sperress track walk on. There will be a game three tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (28:11):
What an ending for the Guardians. Progressive field was going
bananas and it looked like an easy win for Cleveland.
Speaker 5 (28:17):
But the Tigers.
Speaker 2 (28:18):
They created some traffic on the base pass in the ninth,
but in the end Kate Smith was up to the
challenge and finished the job.
Speaker 9 (28:26):
No.
Speaker 1 (28:26):
Won two pips, swinging a liner to first cut on
a late by capus ball game.
Speaker 3 (28:35):
Six to one. Cleveland wins it.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
So that sets the stage four Thursday's decisive Game three,
a winner take all game, and it's the Guardians and
Tigers for a second straight year in that spot. You
may recall in last season's American League Division Series it
went the full five. Game five played a progressive field
and will be ever known as the Lane. Tom his
(29:00):
Cran slam game off of Derek Scubel and the Guardians
won it to advance to the American League Championship Series.
We picked things up this time around in the second inning,
scoreless game and after a memorable major league debut on Wednesday,
for center fielder Chase Delatter, he got another milestone out
of the way in his first at bat against the
(29:20):
veteran Jack Flaherty.
Speaker 1 (29:22):
The pitch swung on smashed in the right face at
first major league hit for Chase Delatt. The only people
nervous in this ballpark are the de Latter family members,
because Chase may be the most confident and most relaxed
young man that.
Speaker 3 (29:41):
You have ever met.
Speaker 2 (29:42):
In the third inning, Detroit got on the board with
three straight hits, capped off by Kerry Carpenter's RBI double,
giving the Tigers a one nothing lead. In the fourth,
George Falera let things off trying to get something going
against Flarity. Here's the two to two swung on a
drilled right field the line, fair ball up against the
wall that goes Valera taking off for second, and he's
(30:05):
on the way, sliding in safe ahead of.
Speaker 7 (30:07):
The throw.
Speaker 3 (30:10):
Lead off double for George Valera Wright.
Speaker 2 (30:14):
This kid's been impressive in the month we've seen him
and now getting regular playing time against right handers in
the postseason. And the next batter was Jose Ramirez pay
off pitch coming here, It is swung on crowded, sharply
past the second baseman, base hit in the right center
crowding third.
Speaker 3 (30:34):
Scoring is Malera tie game in one on the RBI
single from Jose Ramrez.
Speaker 2 (30:44):
The game stayed tied until the sixth. That's when Masslen
native Dylan Dingler stepped in for the Tigers.
Speaker 1 (30:51):
He drives this one high deep to left center field
and this is gone and Dylan.
Speaker 3 (30:59):
Dingler, back in his backyard, has.
Speaker 1 (31:02):
Homered off Joey Cantillo to the left center and it's
two to one Detroit here in the sixth.
Speaker 2 (31:09):
And then in the seventh the Tigers finally got that
big inning that they were looking for, scoring four times
with Riley Green capping things off.
Speaker 1 (31:18):
Riley Green won for three a single infield and he
Ripson RBI single to right and the scores Perez Torkelsen
stops at second and I think the tank is empty
for Hunter Gaddis as Riley Green gets the third consecutive
RBI hit, Stephen Votes coming out.
Speaker 2 (31:40):
Big hole for Cleveland, but you knew they wouldn't give
in easily. As in the eighth inning, after a Brian
Rochio base hit, Stephen Kuan came through.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
Now the one o to Kwan. He's had a quiet series.
He drives on the right down the line, fair ball
takes two bounces, goes up against the wall in the
second in his Kwan stopping at third is Rochio and
Cleveland's not done yet. Second hit in the series for
Steven Kwan. Both have ben doubles and A J. Hinch says,
(32:14):
I am not comfortable yet. He's going to go to
his closer, Will Vest and.
Speaker 2 (32:22):
Then they got some help from the Tigers with Jose
Ramirez at the plate.
Speaker 1 (32:26):
The right handers ready. Here it comes, swung on, grinded
the first bankana by torkles and fires. It's trapped by
Best rolls. Quarto dug out to run score. Ramirez slides
into second head first beats the tag.
Speaker 3 (32:42):
Tigers made challenge.
Speaker 1 (32:45):
I'm a Torkleson threw a Beebie overhand to Vest on
the run, covering it first, he couldn't catch it. Rick
has seaded off his glove and that'll be an error
on the pitcher to run score.
Speaker 3 (33:01):
It's a six to three game.
Speaker 2 (33:04):
But unfortunately that would be it is Tiger's closer Will
Vest was able to finish it off in the ninth
And here's Hammy's call of that final out of what
turned out to be an incredible twenty twenty five season.
Speaker 1 (33:17):
Six to three Tigers in the ninth too, down the pitch,
swung en roll the first torkels and Gloves runs to
the bag himself, and the Detroit Tigers have advanced to
the Division Series in Seattle. They eliminate Cleveland today by
a final score of six to three, mobbing each other
out near the shortstop position. And the Tigers, who had
(33:42):
the most historical collapse of the regular season, with Cleveland
having the most epic and historical surge in Major League
Baseball history. But it's Detroit getting some revenge here in
postseason and they win the best of three, winning games
(34:03):
one and three, and the Tigers have moved on to
the American League Division Series, defeating Cleveland today six to three.
Speaker 2 (34:15):
After the game, manager Steven Vote shared some of his thoughts.
Speaker 6 (34:19):
Man, that's stings.
Speaker 5 (34:21):
It's stings for it to end that way.
Speaker 13 (34:23):
I couldn't be more proud of them of what we accomplished,
but it's not enough.
Speaker 6 (34:28):
We want more.
Speaker 13 (34:29):
And I think that's really the messages.
Speaker 6 (34:31):
Let this sting.
Speaker 5 (34:33):
We're close, we were really close. We're not quite there yet.
Speaker 13 (34:36):
There's things we need to improve upon, there's things we
need to get better with, but the overarching theme is
just I'm so proud of that group for not quitting.
They had every excuse, every reason thrown at them to
quit at any point during this summer and up and
stopped fighting and everyone would have understood, but they didn't.
They came right back, made it interesting there at the end,
(34:58):
and again, let it sting, Let it hurt, Let that
fuel you all winter long as you're working out getting
ready for next year, because we're close, but there's some
things we really need to improve to get where we
want to go.
Speaker 2 (35:10):
And with that, the twenty twenty five campaign for the
Cleveland Guardians came to a close on Thursday afternoon and
early evening, and obviously always a bitter pill to swallow
when the season does and shy of a World Series championship.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
Stay with us.
Speaker 2 (35:26):
We'll have some final thoughts after this on the Cleveland
Clinic Guardians Radio network.
Speaker 6 (35:33):
The post Career Day press conference brought to Progressive Cantank.
Speaker 5 (35:36):
Can you tell us what happened during career Day.
Speaker 3 (35:38):
I'm a biomedical researcher. The kids just weren't impressed.
Speaker 2 (35:41):
How did you feel when your son called in the backup?
Speaker 5 (35:43):
Embarrassed? And I knew it would be a fireman.
Speaker 3 (35:45):
It's always a fireman. It's a cliche, but a crowd favorite.
Speaker 13 (35:47):
He had an accent everything. I can't compete with that.
Speaker 5 (35:50):
And will the fireman be helping your son with his
Science Fair project?
Speaker 3 (35:53):
Hope not. I'm literally a scientist.
Speaker 5 (35:55):
Flank it or not.
Speaker 6 (35:56):
Sometimes you need a backup. That's why there's Progressive to
protect your home in auto? Where's a cash team? Terms
company aphilious, other one rivers no available in those states situations.
Speaker 2 (36:12):
Welcome back, It's Guardians Weekly. We're in downtown Cleveland, that
Progressive field. And it's always a sad time to be
at the ballpark when you have been here for a
season full of games, a great summer here weatherwise. Some
of the outstanding comebacks so memorable, and none bigger in
terms of comebacks than a Guardians team that wiped out
(36:33):
a fifteen and a half game deficit.
Speaker 3 (36:35):
And won the.
Speaker 2 (36:36):
American League's Central Division, and this ballpark was as loud
as it has ever been the last week or so
of the regular season when the fans came out in
full force and full throat for the big series with
the Tigers and then the finishing series against the Rangers,
and again it was hopping in the Wildcard series as
(36:56):
well against Detroit. And boy, you talked to different people
on the country who come in for the National Games,
and they commented so many times how loud Progressive Field is.
And that's a credit to all all of our fans
out there and listeners who show up and really get
behind this team. And the players talked about it quite
a bit as well. But now the ballpark is quiet
(37:18):
and dark for the winter. We will rejoin you in
the springtime with Guardians Baseball. They'll open on the road
in Seattle and then Los Angeles against the Dodgers before
starting their home slate in early April. Of course spring
training before that, and we'll have shows for you throughout
the offseason. We'll be with you each week now until Thanksgiving.
(37:39):
Then we'll take a break from Thanksgiving through New Years,
and they get you going with those hot Stove shows
leading into spring training after the first of the year.
Brian Matse will be with us every step of the way,
helping to put together our show each and every week,
and as always, we thank Matts for all of his
efforts throughout the year. So until next week when we
join you once again field in downtown Cleveland with our
(38:02):
off season programs. This is Jim Rosenhause reminding you that
you've been listening to Guardians Weekly on the Cleveland Clinic
Guardians Radio Network.
Speaker 3 (38:14):
Thanks for being a part of it so long.
Speaker 1 (38:16):
Everybody, Guardians Weekly has been brought to you by Progressive
