is Master Arborist Kevin Ham. Kevin, how you doing this week?
Speaker 2 (00:50):
We're doing great. We're kind of anticipating in a rain day. Yeah,
it hasn't arrived yet, but they say it's coming. It is.
Speaker 1 (01:00):
And for folks that as we look at rain and
we're not talking about blizzard conditions. Maybe a little bit
of snow, but mostly rain, and that means that we're
kind of in that time of year where if you've
got oaks, the window may have closed for this season,
But fretnt. There are opportunities coming up later in the year,
(01:20):
aren't there?
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Absolutely? And you know if if you're thinking about it
right now, you know, get me out there. Yeah, let's
get it on paper and you can at least know
what you're looking at and we can get that lined
up for October fifteenth. That's but yeah, very important. Don't
go prune in your oak trees in April or May
(01:42):
or June specifically, because you will bring in the oak
will it hyph probability?
Speaker 1 (01:51):
Will that fungus ultimately? And I apologize for my navit.
I don't have any oak trees well that ultimately can that?
Will that ultimately kill an oak tree? Or what does
what does olk quilt ultimately do? Aside from causing pretty
significant damage?
Speaker 2 (02:06):
All right? You ready, Sean?
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Yeah, I'm ready.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
It's it's a vascular wilt fungus. Okay, So it's a
it's a fungal pathogen. It is vectored or carried by
the common picnic beetle, and he'll eat your peanut butter
and jelly sandwich as well as anything else. And so
it's a random feeder and he'll stop by a fresh
(02:34):
pruning cut and feed you know, on the on the sap,
and so that's that's where the pruning, you know, leads
to the problem. Now, the other thing is the oak
quilt fungus. Red oaks, specifically red oaks that wilted last
year will be producing spores this year. So the whole
(02:56):
degree day thing that we're watching is is the warming
temperatures and the life cycles of both the fungus and
that little tludai beetle and a common picnic beetle, and
so that as they emerge as flying adults, it kind
(03:16):
of coincides with the the mycelial matt growth of the fungus,
which happens under the bark, and it cracks the bark
open with a pressure pad. It's kind of a cool
little structure. It's a big oval. Usually there's a small oval.
It has a pressure pad right in the middle, and
it busts open the bark like somehow it has a
(03:38):
mind to do this, and it smells like sweet wine.
And the course of beetle is real good at finding that.
So he goes and feeds on that and comes out
with dirty feet and he flies around as a random
feeder and says, hey, that guy just pruned his tree
and he stops there to feed and bingo, Russian Roulette headache.
(04:00):
That's that. And then it gets into the vascular system
of that tree, and the tree says, hey, i've got
a foreign pathogen running around. I'm going to try to
wall it off, and it starts plugging its own vessels
and that causes the wilt, and then it's in that
(04:22):
tree system. And red oaks specifically grafted together underground, like
the roots crossed, and then they graft over time and
they become one big root mat across your yard. And
so it goes from tree to tree to tree. So
you'll see these oak wilt pockets that get logarithmically bigger
(04:46):
in a pure stand of red oaks. So if you
have ten red oaks in your yard and you get
oak wilt in one of your trees, the problem is
usually we get called when the you know, the third
years passed and oh we had another oak tree die,
you know, and five dead oak trees. It's been there
for four years, and we get trouble. So if you
(05:10):
see an oak tree in July, it's mid the beginning
of July, it'll start will start dropping leaves like it's
autumn and you very give me a call. Yeah, so
let you know what courses of action you can take.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
That is it's an important call to make. And as Kevin,
as you mentioned earlier, today's today and get down the
schedule so when October fifteenth rolls around you you can
take care of your tree and of course make sure
you got that oak. They're beautiful, beautiful trees, just great,
great trees, and you really want to keep them healthy
and keep safe no matter what the tree is. And
(05:48):
as we look to warming temperatures, Kevin, I know a
lot of us start thinking this time you're about plant
healthcare and things like soil injections and other things. Now
is the time for folks that haven't worked with you
in the past. Now it's time to get on that
schedule and start that conversation, isn't it absolutely?
Speaker 2 (06:06):
And and we're offering biochar application for the lawn. Oh
you know, so especially in areas where we have chlorotic
white oaks, we treat the tree specifically for yellow leaves,
but that tree goes all under your lawn, So why
not get some application all across the root zone and
(06:33):
your your lawn will get better as well, it's.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
A win win right there for sure, and I'm going
to test too about it. I know you've got You
had mentioned the other week about some new products coming
to the Biochar body body wash, body soap and shampoo line.
I want to ask you about that just a moment.
But I mentioned for for new customers, current customers, folks
that have worked with you in the past. I know
you send out reminders, but it is that time of
year where we start thinking about about preparing for sprays
(06:59):
and other things as well. Obviously you mentioned of course
the the soil and other thing, the amendments, those type
of things, but also spraying and injections and getting on
getting on that schedule. Now is really the time to
be to be doing that, isn't it.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Yeah. The first thing on the list is bronze Bird
four h Japanese built. Those are kind of the first
in line. Then funge of sidle sprays, then mixed in
about the middle of the fungal sydle sprays, the the
spongy moth control comes into play, the BTK sprays, and
(07:34):
then midsummer we can we have different timing for the
Japanese beetle. You know when you all of a sudden
you find out you have some uh, you can give
us a call and we have we have options to
to get after them right away. And uh yeah, and
then of course all of our our pruning and removal
(07:56):
we go right through the summer with and and we
have you know, specialized mats that we put down and
protect your lawn and and we do you know, technical
riggin to avoid big givots. So yeah, give us a call,
great day to do that.
Speaker 1 (08:13):

site there and very popular item. There's a number of
things for sale up at the website Game of Trees
dot com. Very popular has been the biochar body soap
and shampoo and Kevin so popular. As a matter of
fact that that you're starting to to bulcome together as
(08:54):
well as uh make them a little bit smaller to
make them a little bit more portable.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
Yeah, you know, we we've got some you know, a
single single bar price, then a triple bar price, and
a sixth bar pack and and then we made up
a one ounce sample bar and if that doesn't make
a good travel bar size, right, so now we got
the travel bar and we have that in the three
(09:22):
price ranges as well, so that if you want to
get it down, you know, into a great price, you
buy six at once and you know it's consumable, you
just have it for a little while. So yeah, the
travel bar is a real, real good size.
Speaker 1 (09:38):
I will warn folks, once you start using the bioch
Our body body bar and soap, you can't go back.
I mean, it's it's the only thing is because you
like the level of cleanly, like squeaky clean is is
kind of the way I would describe it as, like
you use it and like you're like like when you
just do dishes and you get that tupperware and you
(09:59):
get the little squeak on the plastic your skinned because
it's like literally it does such a fantastic job of cleaning.
Smells great. I know Autumn that that used to work
with us. She always talked about it was. It worked
really good at removing makeup as well, which apparently is
quite oil.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Like car like motor oil from your hands. My son
in law figured that out and uh yeah, and you
know it has a cast oil in it. That's what
makes it real. Study. Oh and you know there's people
that stay cast oil is good for you too. Yeah,
as a topical, you're just getting it every day.
