Speaker 2 (00:21):
That's h a m MS arborcare dot com. Also great opportunity.

Speaker 1 (00:25):
If you're looking to get some cool gifts and some
other nights nice stuff, you head on over to Game
of Trees dot com.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Great website there.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
And as we talk this morning with Kevin mentioned the websites,
haven't mentioned the telephone number eight six six five nine
six five three nine six. That's eight six six five
nine six five three nine six. Kevin.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
How you doing this week?

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Well, we're, uh, we're hopping busy, Sean, Yeah, I fall
and there's twenty of three works. Oh yeah, we're we're having.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
A great I bet it's it's busy.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
And I know you've got a lot for folks that
don't know you do a lot of different things that
I think one of these weeks we should do like
like a thing of like a day in the life
of an arborist, because it is amazing when we when
we talk about all the different aspects of your role
as a master arborist, and what you guys are all
doing at Ham's Arborcare. As a matter of fact, one

(01:19):
of the kind of the interesting areas that I hadn't
thought about is working with the power companies, specifically with
tree removal and tree trimming around power lines and other
things you do have to work, and oftentimes we'll work
with like MG and E for example, to do certain
types of work. Let's talk a little bit about what
that is, how that comes about.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
And sometimes folks also have questions about.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Like MG and E and tree removal in those areas.
Let's let's kind of touch on that stuff this week.

Speaker 3 (01:45):
Evan, Yeah, I mean so often I'm speaking with a client,
they're like, well, we're checking with MG and E if
they'll remove the tree for us. And you know, nine
times out of ten, you're not going to get that
tree removed by MGUNY or an affiliate, Uh, you know,

(02:07):
clearance companies that they work with because you know, there's
there's so many trees by power line. They have a
pruning schedule us usually about seven year cycle where they
try to get in and do clarence pruning on various
wires and you know that doesn't include communication wires. There's

(02:31):
no communication company that is doing line clearance on truths.
It's just not an issue because it's generally not a
big conductive issue. But the primary power line, you know,
they have a ground fault potential. Right if the tree
branch touches the line, it will ground. I just saw

(02:52):
an instagram with just an incredible ground fault that was
not no breaker was cutting off. It was like a
lightning bulk constant as this tree is burning as that
because electricity will try to go to the ground. And
so the danger of course and working around electrical conductors

(03:17):
is that you come in contact with that and you
become part of the path as the tree worker, and
that's never something we want to happen. So when we
come across the tree that MG and E isn't willing
to remove, they are outside of their pruning cycle. But
it's a problem for the client and we have to

(03:40):
do it. But there are rules. If we're not working
for the utility, we can't get within ten feet of
that line, and we do electrical hazard awareness training with
our crew, but that still makes us incidental lye clearance barbarous.
We're not not working on behalf of of an electric company,

(04:04):
and so we can't legally get within you know, ten
feet of those those lines. And so in those cases
where we have a tree, we call in the electric
utility and say, hey, we we have this contract if
you could remove X number of branches or or give

(04:29):
us a line kill or something. And usually a line
kill that feeds multiple houses is not preferred, right because
there's so much liability. What if the freezers don't come
back on, you know, they just they don't like disconnecting
power to multiple homes. And and so they'll come in

(04:50):
and they have a certified crew that's working on behalf
of the electric company that removes the branches that are
within you know, proximity to the true that then makes
it possible for us to take the.

Speaker 1 (05:03):
Treat down Kevin, or they're like, guy, I'm gonna use
this word, and there's probably as a matter of fact,
I think a neighbor a few doors down works with
the power company when it comes to some of this stuff.
But I'm gonna use the word kind of butchers sometimes
when it comes to how they probably don't like that term.

Speaker 3 (05:23):
How they clearance before appearance, clearance.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Before i've even seen I've seen video of like helicopters
with very large chainsaws dangling from them as they as
they fly through the woods like that, Uh is I
mean is? And that is like they're concerned about the clearance,
not the appearance. Is that is that as you kind

(05:48):
of point out there, that's really what what homeowners also
need to need to understand with this.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Yeah, there there needs to be the clearance and if
that sacrifice the in appearance that then they'll be it.
And so there's not much you can do. If you've
got the wrong tree in the wrong place, then it's
probably going to be abuse. And that's just the fact
of life. And you know, the best option is ultimately

(06:18):
get the right tree in the right place. You have
a low growing tree under power line, but if you
have that existing tree, that's where you know there's an issue.
And the tree we're taken down today is kind of
a tree that's grown there for a long time, and
the power lines actually goes through the middle of the tree.

(06:40):
So when they're done clearing this tree, we're going to
have some tree on one side of the wires and
the other whole half of the tree on the other
side of the wires, and so we'll have to approach
it from both directions to get this down, and of
course it's not a property line, so it affects more
than one with that.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
With that, Kevin is as we you know, you think about,
you know, taking down a tree and in those in
those conditions, are you guys able to? Uh, I don't
know if it's correct or beautify some of you mentioned,
you know, obviously hindsight twenty twenty planting that proper tree,
the right tree in the right area. As we see

(07:22):
as we you know, drive around town, you notice that
that hasn't often been the case.

Speaker 2 (07:26):
Are there things that can be done?

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Like like, are you able to or are you ever
called in to be like, hey, listen, the power company
came through, they did their safe clearance area. Is there
a way you can kind of make this tree look
a little a little nicer? I'm guessing you get that call.
Is there anything that can be done oftentimes? Or is
that something that's just I.

Speaker 3 (07:45):
Just did a bid? Yes, oh I like this and
this is proactive. It's the client calling like mid cycle.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
Oh well, the.

Speaker 3 (07:56):
Branches are still not right on the wires, so we
can get in there and do the clearance in a
you know, more tree friendly way, and so that when
the line clearance comes true, they go, oh, no need
to do anything there, and they keep moving on and

(08:16):
and so if you have a tree that's kind of
close and you don't want them, you know, doing their things, well,
then you get us in there ahead of time. And
you know, there's oftentimes we can do something from the
ground with long extensions, non conductive tools that we can
get the line cleared from the ground. It's the rules

(08:39):
that affect us are prooming trees from a.

Speaker 4 (08:44):
Loft, and so we have to be aware of of
what we're doing. When we're a loft, we can't get
within ten feet of the lines. If there's something that
we can get from the ground with a non conductive tool,
you know that it's kind of a you know, an
area where we can make it safe for us, then

(09:05):
go in the tree and do do the rest of
the pruning in a proper ways.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
You know.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
As we as we talk and we think about about
healthy trees, strong trees, beautiful trees, a lot of it
comes down to prevention and even things that we don't
always think about when it comes to UH when it
comes to treecare, things like like preventing it from having
to be an issue for the power company to come
and butcher. And of course again I use that term lovingly.

Speaker 2 (09:28):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
If if you have one of those trees, of course
you can give Kevin a call and be proactive about it,
get that taken care of before it before it becomes unsightly,
and of course maintain your tree and it's great looks.
