Game of Trees You will find them there some great

(00:33):
videos and now some really cool stuff up on their
YouTube channel and other social media platforms. Joining us this morning,
we're heading up to Door County where Mester arborist Kevin
Ham is standing by Kevin is this is this your
anniversary this week or birthday?

Speaker 2 (00:50):
It's birthday week.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Ah, that's I knew there was something in Indoor County
is obviously a beautiful place, but I know there's something
special up Indoor County that that you guys get to Well.
Wish Lisa a very happy birthday from us, and uh,
hope you guys have fun.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
Well, thank you for you know a lot of a
lot of more senior people come here in October. It's
and that makes us one of the younger people.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
On It is like it's it's almost like stepping into
a fountain of you three suddenly. Yes, oh that is excellent.
And of course, uh, the the guys are back at
the office working hard out in the field as well.
And I know for folks that wonder about this, we
are getting into getting into fall, it's starting to feel

(01:38):
like fall even It's a good time to remind people
the team at Ham's Arborcare. You guys work year round,
and that includes through the winter months and as a
matter of fact, in these colder temperatures and even when
the snow is on the ground, there are certain things
for tree care that are much better executed during these
colder months, aren't there.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Absolutely? You know, you've you've got your gardens kind of
going to sleep now, and you know, so the impact
just on the high novelty things is less, and of
course you get snow cover and a lot of times
what we'll do is like our trackloaders will we'll kind
of drive over that snow and it makes kind of

(02:20):
a pad spin around. You can do things that you
can't do on grass. And then of course the frozen
ground if we're so blessed to get that. Last year
we had that in abundance, frozen ground and no snow
and that will made for very efficient treework. Other times

(02:42):
we may need ice, you know, in situations maybe Lake
Wisconsin or Lake Mendota where you know a tree is
out over the ice and you've got to prune it
or take down a dead tree and you have the
ice available. Yeah, a lot of good advantages to winter.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
That's a really a great thing about working with you
guys at Ham's Arborcare is I know there are a
lot of a lot of arborists that I think one
of the I do believe, like when when they're pitching
folks at becoming Arborius, they say, you know, you could
take the winter months off, And so I know there's
a lot of guys that either take the winter months
off or they switch over to to plowing and other things.

(03:21):
Hams Arborcare, you guys work for good reason year round.
That's why it's such a great time to give them
a call and get on the schedule a telephone number
eight sixty six five nine six five three nine six.
That's eight six six five nine six five three nine
six for Hams Arborcare, Kevin, I know, wrap it up
the fall, plant health, those things are pretty much taking

(03:41):
care of. But there's still a lot of stuff going
on as far as applications for various beetles and borers
and other other type of critters. There's definitely a lot
of work to be done right now, isn't there.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
Yeah, if you've had we've kind of got caught up
on our on our fall applications. But there's still time.
Anytime that the ground is frozen, we can we can
get out there and do these. So if you you
had Japanese beetles bugging you this this you know summer,
and or your birch tree is kind of declining at
the top, that could be bronze bird for working in there.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
If your oak tree is declining at the top, that
could be two line chestnut for uh chlorosis. If you
notice this summer that your white oak was kind of
yellow all summer, Uh, it's not a sunburst white oak
like a sunburst honey locus. It's not by design, it's

(04:39):
by deficiency and either iron or manganese, we can we
can get a soil test done and see exactly what
your situation is and and do a prescription application of
a chlorosis bundle.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
I'm going to ask you about biochart two is as
we've talked to about the effectiveness and how it's you know,
really good for your trees, really good for your lawn.
I think sometimes people mistake biochar for like charcoal, or
you know, they're thinking, like, is Kevin just just make
an ash and soot and uh and spreading that out.
Biochar is created in a very particular way that makes

(05:19):
it a very very and it's it's not the same
as just regular old charcoal. There is there is a
process that's that's done to create biochar, isn't there.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
Yeah, And you know, different types of of wood create
different densities. Uh. And we usually use pine for our
our nutrient supplement of activated charcoal. And then we we
are creating a chlorosis boost product that we'll have on

(05:55):
gametrees dot Com, which we'll have sulfur and kele iron
and klated manganese in the mix and you can you know,
dissolve all this and water. It doesn't actually well, the
nutrients dissolve, the sulfur and the biochar kind of float
around in suspension as you stir it. And then you

(06:17):
can apply a soil drench you know in your garden
or somewhere and if you have a pH issue, the
sulfur will help mitigate that locally, and then theklated iron
and manganese are there available for the tree.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
It's interesting as you talk about some of the you know,
the great benefits of things like biochar, and I know
you guys are are putting that out and I was
reading up and I know you've talked about it as
well as like it's like a higher carbon it it
like absorbs. How does that I'm gonna I'm going to
make myself sound silly, so I'll leave this to you,

(06:59):
Like how does that exact act? Like what how does
that work? I mean it obviously looks I think a
lot of folks they say it kind of looks like charcoal.
What is it doing?

Speaker 2 (07:06):
Like?

Speaker 1 (07:06):
How is that? How is biotar working for your trees
and for your long like molecular Yeah, it's going on.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
If you look at it under a microscope base it
looks like honeycomb. Oh, so there's there's poor space. So
when we when we mix our our our biostar mill
it down to you know, one millimeters or smaller, so
of course you get some powder flour almost and then
you get some one millimeter little pellets in there, and

(07:35):
interestingly they feel like a little rock, but they float
in the water. Why do they float because they're they're
a little honeycomb. There's cor space, so there's there's air
trapped in there. Well, that's also a poor space that
micro organisms can house them heelton and it's also uh,
you know, it's it's negatively charged. So the positively charged

(07:59):
ions of of free nitrogen or free nutrients attached, you know,
through cat ion exchange and and so they attached the
carbon and then they released into the tree, and so
you're increasing the nutrient holding capacity. You're soiled by adding
this this carbon and biochar is essentially pure carbon, you know,

(08:24):
So you've eliminated everything out of the wood besides the carbon.
And then that carbon is captured, you know, and it's
going to stay in that state for a long time.
So then you put it down. It increases the nutrient
holy capacity of the so and you put it down
year after year, you can't really overdose. And it's a

(08:46):
beautiful thing.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
That this is. This is why I knew if i'd
ask you, you'd explain it to me in a way
that I can understand as well, and it makes it
makes total sense and what a great product that is.
And as we talk with Kevin Ham of Ham's Arborcare,
if you haven't had your trees inspected recently, or maybe
you did notice some of those things going on over
this past summer, it's a great time to get on
the schedule at Hamm's Arborcare. I got just pick a phone,

(09:08):
gave a call eight six six five nine six five
three nine six. That's eight six six five nine six
five three nine six the website Hamsarborcare dot com. That's
ha mmsarborcare dot com. Kevin, it's always great spending time
with you. You have a great weekend and a great
weekend weekend up in Door County and we'll talk real soon.

Speaker 2 (09:29):
Thank you, Sean.
