Marshall. Here we go again,Welcome to Harp's Court. I'm your host

(00:54):
Derek Harper, my co host JohnRadigan. How you doing Rags and what
do you have for man? I'mdoing great, Harp. I'm so glad
to be back on Harp's Court.I was afraid, you know, they
might relegate me to sixth man ortwelfth man role, so I'm good man.
I feel like I'm I've accomplished something. I'm back on Harp's court,

(01:15):
and I think it's awesome man. That you know, again, we started
this a little bit before the NBAseason was set to begin, and I
know it's just training camp and allthat. We got ways to go yet,
but basically, once they go totraining camp, Harp, it's time
to start NBA basketball again. That'san exciting time of year, you know,
it is very exciting. And whatstands out to me when you start

(01:38):
talking about this time of the yearthe Farris coming soon and I can go
down, I could go out tothe State Fair and eat good and all
of that different stuff. But I'mlooking forward to this season. When it
comes to the Mavericks, they Ithink addressed a lot of problem areas.
If you would give Nico Quell Finley, get those guys a lot of credit,

(02:01):
because I think this is a differentroster. And shit, if you
think about having Luca and Kyrie thebest duo to me in the NBA,
Maverick fans should be getting excited rightabout now. Yeah, I agree,
And it's going to be fun towatch them through training camp of course,
and obviously the preseason games and thenwow, it gets going in the regular

(02:23):
season. It's really going to begreat. Well, I have so much
time to talk about the MAVs andthe NBA, but I got to go
back to the fair because I gottaknow, Harp, what's your like?
Do you have a go to onthe Pride Foods? You know what.
I'm gonna be honest with JR.I can't afford to eat a lot of

(02:44):
fried food six So we're the sameage. So I come from bad jeans,
my mother, high blood pressure, diabetes, things of that nature,
so I'm kind of slow to it. But I've had anything from a fried
ice cream sandwich to fried corn.I mean, I've had a lot of

(03:07):
different things out there, but I'mtrying to stay away from him most of
the time. To be honest,I don't blame you. Of course,
whenever I go, which is usuallyevery year, I gotta get a corny
dog, a Fletcher's corny dog. There's nothing like it. But and then
of course I do enjoy tasting someof the unique items that they bring to
the table each and every year. But I'll never forget the first one was

(03:30):
the deep fried Oreo and Dana Larson, my colleague at Bally who you know
well to. Dana and I wereout there taping the show, and so
I, you know, for thepurposes of a show we were doing,
we just kind of take one bite, you know, and Dana's all Dana
is all healthy. Yeah, Danais all healthy and skinny and stuff.

(03:52):
So she takes her bite and shegoes, okay. We got done taping,
and she goes okay, and she'slike sutting it aside, and I
go, You're never going to eatthat. She said, Oh no,
I don't. I don't need Ohmy god. I ate both of them.
Man, I'm looking the powdered sugaroff the red I don't even like
oreos harp the deep fried oreo,Oh my gosh, that's one of the

(04:14):
best things I've ever been. Idid try the fried oreo before, too.
Yeah that I'll just say it wasdifferent. Different for what I expected.
Yeah, yeah, way way different, because again, oreos crispy,
but then once they deep fried,it's all soft like a nonut. Oh
my gosh. It was. Yeah, it really does, it really does.
But yeah, So let's talk aboutsome of the hottest topics of the

(04:38):
week since the NBA is just kindof getting started right now, and really
the hot, hottest topic of themonth really has to be Dion Sanders.
I know you know Dion very well. I know Dion as well, and
just to watch what this man hasdone, harp when he basically went into
Colorado and broomed everybody, right,he gave him an opportunity, if you

(05:01):
know, and I loved his commentson sixty minutes. He told those guys,
if you if you wanted, ifyou don't want to stay, if
we give you some pushback and yougo, then we didn't want you anyway.
And the guys that did stay provedto him they're your type of guys,
Dion, because they did fight throughthat and they did stay. Still,

(05:24):
only eight or nine or ten guystransferred, you know, stayed with
him from the previous year and allthe others are new. And he has
pulled this all together with a magnificentstart to the season. Yeah, which
is amazing. I don't think anybodycoming into this season college football expected him
to be where he is. Veryunique individual. When you talk about Dion

(05:46):
Sanders better than him as prime timeprime time, you know, he has
a history, has a unique history. You know, didn't have a father
that was in his life present. His mother worked throughout a her life,
throughout his young life to provide forthe family. And I think all he

(06:06):
was taking receipts as he called himnow back then, John, if you
would to kind of build himself intowhat he's build himself into. I think
what he's doing is unprecedented. Andwhat he has as a team and a
coaching staff, and I know RickGeorge the ad there. Rick and now

(06:30):
we're at the University of Illinois togetherbelieve it or not, and he in
prime to me are a great combinationbecause Rick George is one of those free
spirit you know, go for itkind of a guy, kind of a
guy, and they have come togetherand put together a sensational team obviously led
by Dion, but his son,I think has proven to be legit as

(06:54):
a leader as a quarterback at thislevel. Because you come from Jackson State,
nobody is giving you a chance todo what should it has been able
to do. And it's a smallsample size, just three games, and
you don't want to get ahead ofyourself. But I just think the way
he has captivated calfidated Caffi dated thecollege the world, to be quite frank

(07:19):
with you, and college football hasbeen It's been phenomenal and must see TV.
I'm looking forward to Oregon State tomorrowat two thirty Central time. Yeah,
it's going to be a great gamewith Oregon. And I do want
to say too. You know, the appearance on sixty minutes that I referenced,

(07:41):
I kind of glossed over it.You and I both know that's a
huge deal, right to be like, you either really want to be on
sixty minutes or you really don't wantto be on sixteen minutes, right if
they're investigating you so, but obviouslyyou know in Dan's case, it's yeah,
I really want to I want toread the good word about what we're

(08:01):
doing here, right, And theintro to that sixty minutes piece a week
or so ago was all about thereporters saying, we don't profile people two
times in one year, but we'reprofiling Dion Sanders again because of all the
things he's accomplished. So within thelast year he was on sixty minutes at

(08:24):
Jackson State. Now early in theseason he's on sixty minutes again at Colorado.
Really an amazing thing and I thinkthat, to your point, is
why this is bigger than college football. Right He's captured the imagination of the
populace, like, Wow, whatis what is this guy doing? And
ever is he doing it? Everybodyright now is interesting and interested in what's

(08:50):
going on in Colorado right now,and you gotta put Dion right at the
forefront of all of it. Ofcourse, you know Dion as a leader
of men. He was a leaderat when he played in the NFL,
when he played in college, whenhe played baseball, same kind of same
kind of deal. He has away of galvanizing an organization and turning it

(09:16):
into something extremely positive. And hetalks about not drinking, not smoking,
having a positive impact in life forthese young guys, and they have taken
the ball by the horn and theyhave followed him and they're having a lot
of success. I'm a big timePrime fan because he does it the right

(09:37):
way. And think about this,Jon, if you would you leave Jackson
State right and you go to Colorado, you get your opportunity there and you
get rid of basically everybody there, guys that he didn't feel like fit the
bill. And you start the seasonoff against TCU, you find a way

(09:58):
to beat them. Then you getall of the whole world interested in what
the formula is if you would fora guy like Dion to be so successful
and everything that he touches turns togo pretty much, you know that that's
that's Gavin. That's really doing agreat job of gavanizing the country more than

(10:22):
anything. And then of course you'regonna have people out there that don't like
the way you go about doing whatyou do, and there are a ton
of critics out there that doesn't thinkthat he's gone about it the right way.
And when you look at all ofthat, that's just double trouble.
But Dion Sanders is the last personthat I think you want to come for

(10:43):
because he has such an opportunity asfar as being one of these guys that
understands marketing and all of those differentthings. He's a sudden He had everybody
wearing sunglasses if you would, beforethe game last week. So to me,
that's fascinating. He's a very fascinatingcharacter as a as a person.

(11:03):
Yeah, And to your point aboutthat, I think what he does is
just market and look, he's alwaysmarketed himself in a grand way, and
now he is marketing. You know, these kids, right, and he
is out there in front of everybody. He is the one that's forefront,

(11:24):
even though Shader is probably going tobe a Heisman Trophy candidate all seasons.
Yep. Travis Hunter, same thing. The guy plays two ways. You
know. Back in the TCU game, I think he played nearly one hundred
plays. I mean, it's amazingwhat these guys are doing. But Dion
Still, I think, is ableto take a spotlight off of them to

(11:46):
a certain extent and put it onhim. Is that in your experience,
Harp, Is that a good thingfor a coach to do that, to
deflect some of that attention from theyoung men and put it on himself.
Well, I don't think it's adistraction. I think he's strategically planning things

(12:07):
out Jr. If you would, and his approach, the kids are gonna
be perfectly fine. Because now yougotta remember this, for the first time
in college sports, college athletes arebeing compensated. That's a lot to bear,
that's a lot to deal with.But I think the reason why he's

(12:30):
taking the focus totally off of themis for that reason. Maybe they're too
in mature and young to deal withwhat's going on. I mean, answer
me this, John, do youthink that it's a distraction for little Wayne
the Rock? Michael Irvin, MichaelIrvin, Terrell Owens. These guys are

(12:54):
not only around the team, butthey're down on the field. While these
guys are playing, when they comeoff of the when the offense comes off
of the field, that's what theysee, that's what they interact with.
I'll ask you, and your opinion, is that a distraction? I'm I

(13:15):
will say I will say obviously thatit could be, but I will also
say that those kids who would bethe ones who would be distracted by that
have a great mentor and a greatcoach in Dion who who experienced all of
it. If you remember back inthe day, Hart and I was on
the sidelines with the Cowboys in thesedays when Dion was playing, when Michael

(13:39):
was playing, there were princes fromSaudi Arabia on the sidelines who Jerry was
working business deals with, and theywere coming in the locker room. Gary
Busey, the actor at the time, was always a huge Cowboys fan.
Right that Cowboys had a similar entouragearound them when they were again reinvigorated,

(14:01):
there in the nineties with the tripletsand that whole team, and I believe
you learn, you know, amethod of handling that. And in Dion's
case, I believe he has obviouslybeen able to tell the kids this is
how you deal with that. Yeah, when it comes to marketing, I
think they're under the same umbrella.Deon. Not close to what Jerry has

(14:26):
been able to do since being withthe Cowboys as far as marketing his organization.
It's the number one franchise and professionalsports, right, Is it perfect?
Is it straight down the road? No, it's not. You get
off the beaten path sometimes. ButI think the kids are built for it

(14:46):
because they're playing four Hall of Famecoaches. Warren sap is an assistant coach,
a defensive coordinator for Colorado, DionSanders, hall of Famer. They've
been around it, and it's secondnature in my opinion, John, for
these guys to go about their businessin spite of what's going on. And

(15:11):
like you said, it could bea distraction if you don't have the right
guys, if you have guys thatnot quite ready for that, that that
Super Bowl status, that that otherstratosphere status. As as individuals and as
players. I'm gonna get I'm gonnasay it, man, I think Prime
has done a I don't think anybodycould have did what he's done so far

(15:35):
in his first year as a headcoach. He's changed the whole you know,
the whole thing when it comes tocollege football. Yeah, he didn't
crawl his way up or clar orclimb. He just raced his way to
basically the top. Right, You'reyou're in a you're in a Power five
conference, and it's going to beso much fun that they're in the Big

(15:56):
twelve after this year. It'll befun to have Colorado. What's wrong with
what's wrong with it? Right?Everything changes? I mean, you know,
and I think the reason that peoplehave started to make noise and fuss
about the style of Prime Time,Yeah it's empty, is what I would

(16:17):
say. I mean, Nick Saban, Dabo Sweeney, those guys have been
in front of the big stage forso long until people don't question them.
And I think if you continue tolook a look at Prime Time, he's
not harming anybody. He's simply givenhis guys a will, a method,

(16:41):
a mindset. If you would togo out, think that you're great prepared
to be great and simply go outthere and kick butt. I'm not sure
what's gonna happen in tomorrow's game.I think it will be the biggest challenge
that Colorado has face. But Ido believe this that Colorado will show up

(17:03):
and make it a competitive game,because that's who Prime is. That's that's
how he holds his players accountable, and what he holds them accountable too,
is to show up and do whatyou do as a player. And they
have a lot of talent. Ithink that's going unnoticed because of all the
other distractions that's going on and bolderin Colorado. Yeah, and you know

(17:27):
when you mentioned the people who arerubbed the wrong way by Dion's style and
by his approach and by his bravadoright, and he's so out there and
so forced. I hate to sayit hard, but I fear that a
lot of that could be drawn downracial lines, and I don't like that

(17:48):
for our country. And I thinkI feel like there are old white guys.
I'm one, and I don't feelthis way at all, but I
think there's plenty of them who areout there going this is and how you
do it? This isn't how youdo it. Well, guess yeah's proving
Deon's proving this is how you doit, or at least this is one
way to do it. And toyour point, are I love that he

(18:11):
loves these kids. That's what Dabo, Sweeney and and Saban do too.
He loves these kids and he's youknow, raising them up to reach their
highest potential. So you you youyou threw race in the game, right,
which is perfectly fine. I thinkwe need to talk about it.
He's not doing anything that Saban hasn'tdone. That Sweeney hasn't done that,

(18:37):
all of the greats haven't done. You have to promote your program and we're
not living in those old ages thatyou're you were just alluding to. Right,
It's a new day. It's anew situation for crying out loud.
College players are now being compensated. They're being compensated big bucks to to play

(19:02):
college football. So with that comesa lot of scrutiny. You know that,
But I think everything is falling intoplace the proper way. You know,
you you're gonna be hated and alot of it. Success breeds that.
When when you're successful, people theylove to hate success. I mean

(19:26):
think about the Bulls, think aboutthe Lakers the Celtics when they were successful.
You either love those guys and mostof their fan base love them,
but everybody else hated them because oftheir success factor. And that's just part
of it. I think Dean Sandersis a kind of coach and will recruit

(19:47):
the kind of guys that he willbe able to reach from a mental standpoint
and help them to understand that's That'sjust part of it. And I think
Prime will continue to be successful becausehe gets it. He walks to a
different drum or a different beat, beg your pardon, and that's just what

(20:07):
it is. Man. Success breedshate everywhere you go. I don't know
why. I wish I could, you know, say why that is.
But you know, jealousy and envyis a real thing, man, Yeah,
it really is. So let's takeone more little you know, Avenue
on the Don topic here, JerryJoe. You mentioned Jerry Jones, and

(20:30):
Jerry had said after maybe his secondor third game. Oh, in fact,
I think it was after that ColoradoState game which went so late at
night. Jerry's like, I watchedthat one to the very end. He
got watched every minute of Dion andJerry said after the game, the Cowboys
game that week, he said thatthat man is gonna he's gonna be a

(20:51):
great coach in the NFL someday. So I wonder what you think that means.
That means Jerry's gonna gonna look toalright, alright problem as a coach.
That's all that means, you know, you know, yeah you heard
it here first. But again, the way he comports himself is awesome with

(21:12):
the kids, right, he reallyhas a great touch with them. Can
you do that with guys that aremaking forty and fifty and by then who
knows whenever he gets dollars. Yeah, it's certainly more of a challenge.
I mean, let's be real whenyou start talking about coaching top nineteen twenty

(21:33):
year old guys opposed to what youjust talked about, guys that are a
little more mature, if you would, But I think if anybody can Deyon
Sanders can, it's about respect.And I don't think you can find a
lot of people that if you askthem about Deon Sanders, the man,

(21:53):
the motivator, the coach, notmany guys are gonna be to to really
say a lot of bad about theway he has done things might not be
to your liking as a coach, and that back then was back then.
Times have changed, and that's exactlywhat he's holding his hat on. Every

(22:17):
time you hear him talk times havechange. He puts fear, he says
into and I'm quoting him. Hesays, a confident black man gives people
pause. That's Dion Sanders, That'swhat he said. And he's not talking
bad about people. He's not talkingbad about Nick Saban or anybody else.

(22:45):
But he's doing it his way.And so far, John, you have
to admit, it's been pretty good. The question I have is for Dion
and for his players, is whenthings don't go your way, are you
gonna be able? How are yougonna deal with that and handle that?
You know, because the scrutiny ishere, but so far Prime and his

(23:11):
team have been able to get throughit. What happens if they get beat
tomorrow by a big, a largemargin. Right, people are coming.
They're coming for him. You watchon Twitter, on on all of the
media outlets. They're gonna come forhim. They're gonna say they weren't prepared.
You know, there were guys whenthe season started, said he didn't

(23:33):
have enough talent to do anything. Those guys are gonna come back, and
I'm really interested rats and how Dionhis players. Colorado responds to that,
this is what makes this story sofascinating, Hart, because tomorrow they are
twenty one points. Look in thepapers saw that they when they took the

(23:59):
field against ECU, they were twentyone point underdogs. Right, so,
and I believe so far, again, short sample, but so far,
Deon's done a masterful job of theUS against them mentality. Nobody believes in
US mentality, right, I thinkit prevailed. It prevailed against TCU,

(24:19):
and I know this. That's aand Deon was not here as a part
of the Cowboys under Jimmy Johnson, but that was a big that was a
big player in Jimmy Johnson's you know, a deck of cards as well.
Nobody believes in US Cowboys had won, you know, a super Bowl,
or nobody believes in we kid, maybe we want the super Bowl. But
he would sell them on, Hey, it's US against them. Nobody believed

(24:42):
believe in you up there, andDeon has done a great job at that.
So you know, let's see andI do believe that has a shelf
life part right, at some pointthe players will finally go. I think
they do believe in US coach, you know. And at that point deonid
switch, right, He'll He'll cometo another method of motivating his guys.

(25:03):
But I think for now it's stillthat US against them. Nobody believes in
US mentality. I can tell youfrom past experience, Jard, that that's
where you want to be with nothingto lose but everything to gain. If
you would me against the world,I mean, you find you dig deeper

(25:23):
when it's you against the world.Would you agree that you find a way
to dig a little bit deeper andget a little bit more out of yourself,
if you would? And I meanwe're sitting here talking Prime. I
don't think we have to worry aboutDean Sanders. I really don't. Or
Colorado because this is the first yearyou get to recruit. If there's what

(25:49):
seven and five twelve games, right, If they're seven and five after this
year and they come back next year, they still have something to build on
and they still have wigger room togrow as a as a university, and
I think that they will. Idon't see Colorado going backwards long term from

(26:14):
here. They won one game lastyear, right, yep, one game
they've They've already won three, SoI think I think the best is yet
to come for prime time and forColorado as far as the futures. Yeah,

(26:36):
yeah, And I think to yourpoint, you were saying how people
gravitate toward d And I think anybodywho knows him as we do, anybody
who knows him, if you getto know him, you get him a
lot more. Right, You realizethis is a good man. I think
a great man. I really dojust have unique ship qualities. I'm not

(27:02):
going to follow anybody, but ifI if I if I see a guy
worth following, then I will followhim. And I think that's where these
young kids are. You know,we we were just finished talking about whether
or not the kids can handle it. What's there to handle? You're being
coached by Hall of Fame cornerback.People didn't even throw it. Deon Sanders

(27:30):
didn't throw his way. I meanhe was really over there, just relaxing
his whole career because they were soafraid of him. So the stage is
never gonna be too big for theguys that he's going to be able to
go out and recruit and let's go, let's go buff I'm not I'm not

(27:51):
a fan. I wasn't a fan, I should say, but I am
now because I like the story ofDeon you know us again, it's the
world changing the narrative of how youdo things. I like that because life
is all about change. You haveto adjust in life to work for you,

(28:12):
and Dion has has been fabulous atthat so far. All right,
so speaking of adjustments, let ustalk about Jerry Jones team that we were
referencing Jerry a minute ago and youknow, we go or so they lost,
you know, a Pro Bowl cornerbackand Traybon Diggs and that is Sally

(28:34):
Blow. Yeah. Yeah, yesterdaywas the day that he actually got hurt
and ACL, right, an ACL, which means you are out for the
season. You know that that's justa done deal. It's a twelve to
thirteen month recovery process for I knowfor NBA guys, it's like a twelve

(28:56):
month thirteen month I think football playerscan get back a little soon. But
as soon as that ACL's gone, which happened in practice, the season's over.
Man. That first of all,it's heartbreaking for the athlete. Isn't
it, no question about it.I'll take you back a week, same
thing. It wasn't an ACL butit was a It was a hamstring for

(29:21):
the great Aaron Rodgers. Yea.And just what the Jets had to do,
the Cowboys are gonna have to doas well. They're gonna have to
adjust. You know, we wewe say when there's an injury in professional
sports, next man up. Afterall, you get paid if you're a
cornerback. You get paid to defendthe greatest wide receivers in the NFL.

(29:45):
Right, So that's what's gonna haveto happen. I mean, it's it's
a rallying cry if you would, for the rest of the guys. You
know what I think. I thinkthe reason that I felt like the Cowboys
I feel still feel like it canbe in the Super Bowl was because of
their defense. I mean they're thestagiest freaking team and in the NFL,

(30:08):
I mean, it's just hard toscore against those guys. You're not gonna
get anything easy. You think aboutParsons and what he's what he's become as
a young talent in the NFL,they're just built to be. If there's
any team in the NFL that's capableof overcoming such a significant loss. I

(30:32):
think the Cowboys are able to dothat. They're they're just that deep.
That good won't be as easy asit was because I think teams are strategic
enough in the NFL to target aweakness. And it's certainly a weakness if
you would not having Digs back there, and you wish him well speedy recovery.

(30:52):
But the Cowboys are gonna be okay. They they they're built to over
come adversity like this. Yeah,it makes you happy that in the off
season they went and got step OnGilmore his own team. Yeah, his
own teammate Ceedee Lamb said, thisis the smartest uh, you know,
defensive back I've ever faced, becausehe just knows what what I'm going to

(31:18):
do and if I ever beat himonce, it'll never happen again. Right,
So, and Gilmore's that type ofguy, He's got that type of
experience. You're right, though, you know, if you moved around Bland
over there, there's a there's aloss you can't replace. You can't replace.
This guy was a Pro Bowl notthat kind of talent, but with
intelligence, experience. Rats to yourpoint, will definitely help you to get

(31:41):
through it. And I'll say this, you know they're all in sports.
You don't ever as a as acompetitor, You're never hoping that a guy
gets hurt, right, However, you're looking for your opportunity. So here's
an opportunity for backup corners for theCowboys. Here's an opportunity for you.

(32:08):
Careful what you ask for, youthink you wanted until you get it,
and when you get it, youbetter cash in because it will it will
decide how long you're in an NFLplayer in a lot of cases. All
right, So from your experience, different game, but you've had similar experiences
where you lose a great player. And you mentioned Micah Parsons. Is there

(32:32):
a concern that a Micah or anyoneelse on that defense will begin to try
to do a little too much inorder to compensate. Always that's always the
case. But I'd rather you tryto do too much than to be complacent.
Roy Tarpley, Yeah, Well,I played with here in Dallas.

(32:52):
We lost him because of we knowthe reasons why. Because of drug problems
and a disease. Is what Ialways talk about when I talk about Target
and his situation. He just couldn'tcouldn't kick it, unfortunately, and Roy
was twenty and twelve easy getting outof the bed. So we we lost

(33:19):
a lot in that situation. It'sa similar situation with the Cowboys. They're
losing a lot and digs. Butyou have to find a way not to
act like it didn't happen. Ithappened, but you have to find a
way to rebound from it not feelsorry for yourself because I guarantee you the
hate for the Cowboys, I meanit's real and the love, don't get

(33:43):
me wrong, but people everybody doesn'twant to see the cowboys do well.
So they're not gonna gonna gonna havethat pity patty party with the cowboys and
feel sorry for them. They're gonnahave to get up and they're gonna have
to go starting Sunday against Arizona. And when you when you look at a

(34:05):
defensive unit's eleven guys, right,it seems like compared to your five in
the NBA, right, it seemslike there are more opportunities to make up
for this loss, right, Iwould agree. And and the other thing
I think that goes unnoticed a lotof times is a guy like Dan Quinn.
Yeah, probably the best defensive coordinatorin the NFL. I mean,

(34:30):
you can argue that he had successin Atlanta as a head coach. They're
very successful, very strategic when itcomes to game planning. And I think
the thing that I see just frommy my little football knowledge is that his
guys are prepared and they believe intheir scheme defensively, which is Blitz rushed

(34:55):
the quarterback all the time. Youif you watch the game the other against
the Giants, they were coming.Yeah, they were coming every night.
And I think you're gonna see itmore of that when with Diggs being injured,
You're gotta see more of that. The defensive line. You gotta see

(35:19):
some some some different kind of stuff, some different kind of attacking from the
Cowboys now that they've lost such asensational talent and Traylon dis Yeah, that's
gonna be It's really it's really gonnabe fun. I mean, I think
they were almost a shoe in tobe the number one defense in the league.
Yet again, San Francisco is alwaysgonna have something to say about that,
but I think they had a reallygood shot at it. Maybe they're

(35:43):
not the number one defense in theleague anymore. Okay, well, that's
fine as long as their ranking highin that department. This offense looks like
it's coming along really well too, well, they're gonna have to Uh,
Dak is gonna have to get going. I think if you look get it.
It puts a little pressure on Dad. You use the word not trying

(36:04):
to do too much. That's whereDak is now. He's not trying to
do too much. But their offenseis gonna have to gonna have to step
up because if you think about whatfour turnovers last week for the Cowboys against
the Giants. I think they hadfour or five turnovers as well. That's
all good and dandy, but whenyou face good teams, and the Cowboys

(36:27):
have a difficult schedule. When youthink about their schedule, they don't play
Chop later this year. It's atough schedule. And when you get to
the meat of your schedule, yougotta score points. You gotta get the
ball when you get in the redzone, you gotta get the ball in
the end zone for seven six points. You can't settle for field goals.
And I think the first two gamesthat's kind of a concern for dak for

(36:52):
the offense of coach of McCartney.Of course he's calling plays this year,
which is a new wrinkle for theCowboys offense. But you gotta go for
it, man, you gotta gofor it. I don't think many people
are going to jump off of theCowboy wagon because they're that good and that
talented. Yeah, and I did, like, you know, you were

(37:12):
kind of mentioning how even if Coloradogoes seven and five this year, that'll
be something to work on, right, something to be better. So the
Cowboys win thirty to ten over theJets, and that's that's all anybody on
the offense would talk about after thegame was, man, we can't settle
for those field goals. We gottayou know, they only put it in
the end zone twice, and theywere like, we can't be settling for

(37:34):
those field goals. They won bytwenty points. But I appreciated the fact
that they were looking to get better. Who does that fall on? To
me? It falls on the headcoach and the quarterback. They're connected at
the hip, right. McCartney tooktook the stand of they lost a great

(37:57):
offensive coordinate by the way too atso McCartney starts to call the plays.
He and Dak have a great rapport. From what I understand just listen to
Cleaner Tale and different people. Theyhave a great rapport. So that has
to be one of the main staysfor what the Cowboys are going to be
as a as a team. Offensively, I still think that the best is

(38:21):
yet to come. Citee Lamb. You know Poller, all of those guys
are offensive line. I think they'llfind a way to get it done moving
forward. I wouldn't be surprised ifthis week they kind of open up the
can and and and show what they'recapable to be in as an offensive team.
That's gonna be a fun season.I think no matter what, and

(38:43):
everybody else is going to have todeal with injuries at some point down the
season two. So we know that'syou know, you're only as good as
how deep you are, right becausethe next injury could be that could be
the one. You know, theGiants loss the Yeah, they lost him
last week. I mean that injuryboard is not nothing nice, but to

(39:07):
your point, is certainly a partof the game, and you got to
find a way to rebound from that. I think when every team, every
organization in the NFL, when theybuild their roster, I think they're building
it with depth as an organization incase of injuries. It's not if it's
when they strike, Yeah, thatyou know you can rebound and you can

(39:30):
move forward and be the kind ofthe kind of team and have the kind
of success that you plan to havewhen you when you started in training camp.
So speaking of a team, who'swho's plan may be different now than
it was during not training camp.We call it spring training for baseball.

(39:52):
But the Texas Rangers, man,I played baseball, by the way before
you. Yeah, I played alittle baseball. You wouldn't believe it,
but I bat at fourth. Iwas a good batter that I hand coordination
came in handy in my day.But carry on, John, I'm sorry,
Yeah, so, and I believeit. I believe first of all,

(40:14):
quick aside on that, I believea professional athlete can beat me just
a regular guy in any sport.Anytime you've never picked up a tennis racket,
play all the time. Okay,so you did anyway, But even
if you hadn't, right, orif you've never picked up a golf club,
which I know you played that too, I'm some go out there,

(40:35):
okay, okay, okay, Idon't play golf. That's a lot.
I love golf, and just likea lot of people, especially athletes,
Tiger Woods came upto the scene andwe all jumped out there thinking we can
play golf too. But I lovegolf, but I don't think what I
do out there is called playing andwe'll get out there, so yeah,
we'll do that. But anyway,I appreciate. I'm sure you were a

(41:00):
good baseball player and football if youdid that too, for that matter.
But yeah, I'm sure. Butanyway, as far as this Rangers group
goes, it's been a roller coasterride, man, And like we're hanging
on for this final ten games ofthe season, just going we're gonna ten
left, ten left, they gotthey got seven, they got seven with

(41:22):
the Mariners and three with the Angels. And you know, we asked Bocchi
about that just the other day.We said, uh, you know this,
we just got to kind of hangonto this roller coaster ride, right
and he goes yeah, and hegoes, man, I can't believe how
far down we've gone. But thenwe climb back off, you know,
and it is it's and most ofthe roller coaster, honestly, harp has

(41:44):
been in the second half of theseason, and much of that, much
of that has to be due tothe injuries that they You know, you
had six All Stars, Yeah, you had six All Stars, and five
of the six have been injured inthe second half of the sea and that's
that's just really hard to overcome.Well, we're talking about a similar situation

(42:05):
with the with the Cowboys and Diggs. Can you overcome the injuries? And
I think the Rangers have done atremendous job of staying afloat if you would.
We we talked earlier, and oneof the problems I think the Rangers
have moving towards the postseason right nowis their bullpit. Yeah, I just

(42:25):
don't think they have enough there.I mean, even if they get to
get hot hitting, you still gottaget out right that. If you think
about all the great playoff runs, the thing that sticks out, and that's
in the right in the forefront ofeverything is being able to get people out.

(42:51):
And I think you will see itwith the Rangers. That's probably going
to be their biggest challenge. Ifthey can hit and and be solid from
that standpoint, they still have achance. And the good news is that
you played the same team, soyou know what you're facing. You play
the same team seven out of whatdid you say? Ten? Yeah?

(43:13):
Yeah, and right now, andI think the Rangers are They are a
third if I'm not mistaking, behindSeattle and behind the Houston. Actually,
as they start the series with Seattle, the and it's basically a seven game
series in a way, it basicallyis the playoffs starting now. But as

(43:35):
they start the series, Seattle andthe Rangers have exactly the same record,
so technically they're both tied for thirdis probably how it would be listed,
and they're both just a half gamebehind Houston. So it's going to be
super, super super exciting and interestingto see how it goes down the stretch.
But to your point about that gettingthose outs in the playoffs and the

(43:57):
most important out, like we allsay, game one is every bit as
important as game we won sixty twoor won Game one was the same as
game eighty. The most important outin a game and a game of baseball
is that twenty seventh out, right, And you've got to have somebody who
can get that twenty seventh out andthe Rangers unfortunately. I mean I thought

(44:19):
in the middle of the season,I thought, wow, you know,
they had Josh boards going really well, and then a roll As Chapman came
in and he finished, you know, work the eighth inning, and then
Will Smith was looking like the closerthat he used to be back in the
day, and I was like, man, they've got it. They've got
a seventh, eighth and ninth thatyou know they can't And then all of
a sudden, the wheels came offof that and suddenly this team reminds me

(44:44):
a little bit of the ninety sixteam that was the first Rangers team that
ever made the playoffs, and theywere a great team. They top to
bottom in that line. It mighthave been a wasted the manager that year.
No, back then, that wasJohnny Oates, Johnny and the very
yeah, the very first year oftheir playoff run, it was Johnny Oates

(45:05):
and and one through nine, youknow, that's our buddy. Mark McLamore
was on that team and won,and Pudge and you know all those guys.
And then the ninth place hitter andthat order was Kevin Elster, supposedly
light hitting shortstop and Kevin Elster drovein ninety nine runs that year, right,
So man one through nine, theyhad a great batting order that year,

(45:29):
and they had really good pitching thatyear too. In fact, at
the trade deadline that year they wentand got John Burkett, which even enhanced
their pitching that, you know forthat postseason run. But what happened is
win Game one in New York, blow US, saving Game two in New
York, blow US, saving gamethree here series, and then I think
that the fourth game was just, you know, just not one that included

(45:52):
the same. But you had agingmen in the bullpen, Mike Henneman who
had been a great and Jeff Russell, who had been a great closer,
but at that point in their careerthey didn't quite have it as much anymore.
And you can't overcome that. Andthat's what I fear we might see

(46:13):
from the Rangers this year. WilliamSmith and a rolled this, you know,
long in the tooth. Let melet me ask you this. In
your opinion, you said Houston hasa half a game lead starting today,
right the game is at seven tonight. What separates in your opinion, right
Houston from those two teams experience thatthey've done it all and been there and

(46:39):
they know. I mean like whenthe Rangers, we were in a bad
way when Houston came in for thelast series of the season between the two
clubs in the middle of August,Man the Astros just put a hurt on
the Rangers, just beating them bydouble digits almost every day, and you

(46:59):
know, it was a little bitdemoralizing. And I think it was absolutely
a way of the Astros among themselvessaying, Okay, we got to send
a message here. We know howto do this, we know what to
do. And I think they pulled, you know, pulled some of that
postseason focus into that series right then. And so I think that's the that's
the biggest difference between the two.Last year, Seattle made a run,

(47:22):
got to the playoffs, ended thelongest playoff throute in major sports history,
but but didn't advance, didn't doyou know, didn't didn't win like they
were in the World Series. Butthey they learned a little bit of how
to do that. You know this, you have to learn how to win.
And the Rangers have proven they canwin in the regular season, but

(47:43):
learning to win in the postseason couldbe a completely different animal. Yeah,
and I think coaching you have that, the manager you have that, and
both of you. Oh absolutely yeah, he has so much experience. I
think it will really come in into play. You know, I'm loving
Harps Court with John Radigan on withme. I'm really enjoying this. You

(48:09):
know, you and I've known eachother for a long time. We've been
around each other for a long time. You had a story with me talking
about your first experience here. Yeah. Yes, so all of that,
man, makes for a lot ofconversation and a lot of fun. I
just want you to know how muchI appreciate you coming on and being a

(48:29):
part of what I'm trying to doas far as Harts Harps Courts Court is
concerned, and we're going to continueto move forward, but more important,
we're gonna have some fun. Man. Yeah, I love it. I
love your thoughts, I love youropinions, and I love your experience.
Yea. And of course we haven'treally in the in the two podcasts yet,
we haven't really even dabbled in yourexpertise, because you know it's not

(48:52):
as Yeah, well we will,we will, and everybody will know and
everybody will hear the stories of outyou know about what you've done and what
you accomplished and every most people rememberand realize that they're watching this, but
it's significant, man, and it'sit's a pleasure to be on here with
you. I I just I've reallyenjoyed it too, Harp. It's been

(49:15):
great. Yeah, And until nexttime on Harp's court, We'll see you later.
