a North Dakota Fighting Hawks football win at home on
Saturday against Indiana State, here's head coach Eric Schmidt. Everybody,

(01:23):
let's give it up. So great crowd on hand here, coach,
this is awesome. So you look at that game Saturday
against the Sycamores. You knew the opponent, they've had their troubles,
but you did not dismiss them going into that game.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
You had a lot of respect for them.

Speaker 1 (01:41):
But yet again, you guys seemed ready right from the
get go basically, and approached it the right way and
got your nose.

Speaker 2 (01:48):
In front right away. And that was That's always big
isn't it.

Speaker 3 (01:50):
Yeah, starting fast, We've talked about it before.

Speaker 4 (01:52):
You know, throughout the weeks, our guys have done a
good job of being able to you know, right from
the start. You know, we obviously had deferred team and
and declined the the possession to take it in the
second half, and our defense did a good job of.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
Getting a three and out to start out.

Speaker 4 (02:06):
We got a little bit behind the chains on our
first on our first drive with a holding call, but
you know, punted and got a three and out again,
and then you know, a really good job by our offense,
and then you know, just Sawyer, I think Sawyer's you know,
gotten better and better here as uh as October's gone along.
And what I mean by that is he's just done
a good job in between the tackles of being able
to get some of the dirty yards and you know,

(02:26):
maybe when it's not just blocked up perfect, he's still
doing a good job of being able to get four
and five yard runs. And then, you know, I really
thought after that we gave up a field goal and
then the next possessions were three and out, three and out,
turnover on downs and the interception and our offense went touchdown.
Touchdown field goal and be able to create some separation
going into halftime.

Speaker 1 (02:46):
And you know, the the thing about it is is
that when you are taking the ball away and doing
things with it, it's it's it's the same for every team. Basically,
it's just a it's a matter of doing it though,
and when you take advantage of a takeaway, it just
goes such a long wing.

Speaker 4 (03:02):
Yeah, I think you know, obviously everybody knows about, you know,
wins and losses, but what other statistics that you put
into wins and losses? And for us, we really talk
a lot about number one you just mentioned, it's a
turnover ratio. Like you want to be able to win.
We talk about turnovers on offense and takeaways on defense,
and you want to be on the plus side of that.
The other thing is explosive plays and I think, you know,

(03:23):
I think we double them on Saturday and explosive plays.
And then the last thing is feel position. That does
a lot, you know, with what you're doing on special teams.
But just ultimately, you know, the last few weeks, we
ran the ball for over two hundred yards. Again, we
gave up I think you know, sixty some yards rushing
you know, we were in the red zone seven times.
They were in the red zone once. You know, just
time of possession was good. We were good on third down.

(03:44):
That's something that offensively we've really emphasized here in the
last two weeks. You know, we were ten to twenty
on third and fourth down, and and doing a good
job of sequencing plays too, as well as we get
into you know, sometimes we don't get there on third down,
but we know that, okay, if we can get at
the fourth and three, we're going to go for it
on fourth down. So I think those are some things
too as well as far as being able to sequence

(04:05):
third and fourth down once you get into certain parts,
and Isaac's done a good job of that of understanding like, hey,
I don't lose any yards here, it's third and six,
we're going through. We're going for it on fourth down.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
Well, and you know, in talking to coach Frickty, your
offensive coordinator, I think he made some somebody had asked
him and maybe it was me who asked him a
little while ago. I said, you know, where does Jerry
have to grow? And he's like, well, that's a tough
question because the guy's putting in the time we all
have to grow. Everybody's got to get a little bit better.
But this past weekend, you know, it was right there
for everyone to see, keeping drives alive, of making the

(04:36):
right throw. Maybe you were behind in the distance a
little bit in some of those downs where he had
to make a good throw and had to go for
some yards in order to pick up a first down
and keep the offense on the field.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
It just makes such a huge difference.

Speaker 4 (04:48):
Well, I think that's a great point, and he used
the word grow, and that's really what we've talked about
with our guys here. Yet, you know, as you get
late in the year, I think some people, you know,
this becomes a check to check the box type of deal.
Is like, hey, I'm going to practice today. We're going
to do individual a day and I'm going to do this.
But I think really good players and really good teams
it's about you know, you could still get better and
you could still grow and there's still things, you know,
techniques here, skills there that people need to be able

(05:11):
to get better at. We really challenge our guys this
week to come into work and have a growth mindset
to get better. And Jerry's been that way. I mean,
he leads the way as far as that goes. And then,
like you said, I think it was really important for
us to it was coming, you know, to be able
to you know, throw and catch it better. We're in
a number of second and lungs and you know, even
some third and lungs. The touchdown to Cayden Dennis I

(05:32):
think was third and thirteen or something like that, and
we get up you know, I mean an explosive play.
And the other thing I think once again that you know,
you'll see different guys at different times, whether it was
Nate Rimaca catching a touchdown, whether it was you know,
Bj Fleming, Cayden Dennis had his best game, you.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Know, of the year.

Speaker 4 (05:46):
So just being able to you know, as the as
the ball finds you, to be able to take advantage
of your opportunities. Corey Tie has been back now the
last couple of weeks, so we you know, to have
all of our weapons available. And now those guys that
think are starting to have a better understanding of, you know,
what concepts are meant for, you know, against what looks
where I'm supposed to be when I'm supposed to be there,
and we're starting to be able to see a little

(06:08):
bit more explosiveness out of the past game.

Speaker 1 (06:11):
You mentioned some names, and I was going to add
a few others into there. I know we talked about Sawyer,
but the running back room is good enough even though
Gavin is out for the time being. You know, we
saw some exavier Lee. I thought he had some tougher
runs where he really kind of stuck it in there.
I thought Colton did stick it in there on that
fourth and short play. They didn't quite maybe crease it

(06:31):
the way they hope were intended in front. But I
think Colton can give you some solid carries as well.
So it's still a good running back room even though
you're missing one of the pieces.

Speaker 4 (06:40):
Yeah, you know, obviously Gav's a veteran guy who's, you know,
a proven player in our league. But it was business
as usual. I think that's the way Isaac put it.
I could agree with him more of that. Hey, it's
you know, we're going to give some of those some
of those carries to Colton. We really challenged X like,
hey man, you got to keep our offense on the field.
You got to be able to do a good job
of being able to get some yards in between the tackles,

(07:03):
and now we'll have you know, Chuck back here too
as well and be able to use him again this week.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
I think he's a.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
Guy that can you know him and Colton can can
help us in between the tackles, shortyarded situations, all that
kind of all that kind of stuff.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
So besides our old line room, maybe our tight end room.

Speaker 4 (07:18):
We always thought that, hey, the running back room was
the you know, either the second or the third deepest
room in our entire team. And we're having to use
all those guys here now as you go throughout the season.

Speaker 1 (07:27):
So one of the things that I've always wondered and
I haven't had a chance to ask you about because
I know some of the vocal people in this roster.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
I don't know if all.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
The fans do because they are not always around the
locker room hallways after a game.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
Maybe I wander into it.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
And we certainly know Malachi just from a the way
he carries himself, the way he does it in learning
sessions in the room, everybody takes his cues. Plus he's
good at vocal leadership. Another guy that people don't realize,
I think, or maybe they do. Nate Demontenek is a
good vocal guy. I mean, he he just kind of
throws his emotion out there and it's probably a little

(08:01):
bit for him as far as harnessing it all to
me being both a good player doing everything you're supposed
to do and using that emotion at the same time.

Speaker 2 (08:08):
For a guy like.

Speaker 4 (08:09):
Nate, well, I think, you know, you got to be
excited to play football, and you know, even little things
like he downed upon at the one yard line and
really had you know, I mean a lot to be
excited about, Like even those little things, I think to
be excited for the punter, to be excited to be
able to help our football team, I think he's you know,
he typically is doing it, you know, for.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
The right reasons.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
I mean, he gets excited when his teammates make plays,
all those types of things. But definitely, you know, I
think you got to have those guys on your team.
You know, there's uniters of people. There's guys that breathe
life into a room. And then you know, sometimes you
talk about energy vampires, people that you know suck life
out of a room. And Nate's definitely a guy who
you know, brings a lot of energy, brings a high
standard chance. He is not afraid to challenge, you know

(08:50):
what I mean, his his teammates, and we talk about
all that all the time. That was our whole deal
last week was being player led and not just being
somebody's friend.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
But you got to be a good teammate too as well.

Speaker 4 (08:59):
Not just tell somebody what they what they want to hear.
You got to tell them what they need to hear
in order to get better. And and Nate's a veteran guy.
I mean him and Gab have been here probably as
long as anybody on the offensive side. Simon Runfro. You know,
all those guys the Grant, you know, so those guys
have They got a lot of you know, sweat equity
in this program.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
And I think when they talk, people will listen.

Speaker 1 (09:21):
One person did have me ask and I know you
don't get into the devil in the details, but Hes
Javans had a decent a better week than when he
left the field, because I mean, I think every once
in a while it's a player gets nervous because they're
not feeling right when they get up from a play.
But uh, you know, you just don't like to see
that when a player is trying to make a player,
so to speak. And and just didn't come up from

(09:42):
it what right way?

Speaker 2 (09:42):
So how is he doing?

Speaker 3 (09:43):
Yeah, he's struggling right now.

Speaker 4 (09:45):
We'll probably we'll probably lose him for an extended period
of time just after him going and getting X rays
and things like that, just a you know, a real
bad ankle sprain that he's gonna have to go through here.
So we'll we'll see where it ends up. But he'll
be out here for an extended period of time. So
that'll obviously bring Simon back into the fold here. Jack
soon look back into the fold as far as where

(10:06):
we're at with backup quarterbacks and and uh, you know,
we'll support Javans. He'll have to uh you know, probably
have surgery here and and uh and we'll miss him
for an ex extended period of time.

Speaker 1 (10:15):
And and you know, it's so interesting sometimes plays like
we talked about, you know, aren't always the ones that
just make you go ooh boy, that's a tough.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
It's the ones that don't.

Speaker 1 (10:25):
And we were talking about Gavin z Barth and it
seemed pretty innocuous and it you know, that just seemed
like a normal football play and and uh and I
just was like, boy, I wonder how that happened. And
then sure enough he just did looked very uncomfortable leaving
the field.

Speaker 4 (10:37):
Yeah yeah, I just you knew something was wrong and
and uh just kind of got tackled awkwardly and uh
and fell weird and and you know, one of those
deals where high ankle spraying. Sometimes they can be you know,
a couple of weeks. Sometimes they require surgery. It just
depends on the ligaments there and how many, how many
you stretch, how many you tear. And unfortunately his was
was pretty serious. Oh tough stuff there. When we return,

(10:58):
we're gonna keep Coachmit for one more segment. We're going
to talk about the upcoming game against South Dakota coming
up on Saturday at the Dakota Tome in Vermilion. And
we'll just say, coming up this week, so much to
follow in un d athletics. And I'll tell you this
first and foremost, you indie hockey. That's the home activities

(11:18):
they're taking on the Minnesota du Luke Bulldogs at seven
oh seven on Friday, six oh seven on Saturday, a
huge opening NCCHC weekend a Halloween Wien affair. By the way,
the Ralph Eing Golestead Arena has released just fyi if
you do wear a costume on Halloween, just to make
sure your costume is the right kind of costume so
you can be involved.

Speaker 2 (11:41):
Hey, look, it's Jack Michaels.

Speaker 1 (11:42):
He's going to make an appearance here, so we're gonna
bring him in as well eventually, so I tell you what,
So make sure it's the right kind of costume. Other
activities for you and d sports include men's golf. They're
finishing up now at the Old Dominion event as well.
Volleyball is heading to Earl Roberts on Thursday. Tennis is
at the Drake Invite coming up this weekend. Cross country

ten am is when everything gets underweghing Omaha on Saturday.
Volleyball's at Denver on Saturday, and of course Undy Football's

the Halloween Bash was a super successful. Talk to coach

(12:25):
Schmidt about that coming up next next segment as well
to see how many of his players were able to
participate in that. When we return, we'll talk about the opponent,
