Speaker 1 (00:00):
And we won't give me back here to another segment
of Hawk Talk on this Tuesday night. What a great
crowd we have. Thank you for coming out and joining
us here tonight in another great week of U and
D sports on hand, Dane Jackson has brought a cast
of thousands with him tonight. We apparently had a table
big enough.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
That's great.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
Thanks coach for bringing everybody out and everybody on's welcome
head coach Dane Jackson North to go to hockey joining
us here tonight. And before we get underway, what's your
favorite Halloween treat?
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Oh, that's a good question.
Speaker 3 (00:31):
I'd probably say, I don't know, probably recent peanut butter cups.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
That's that's a classic. Well that's his face. That's other
than KitKat, that's a jack special to.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Every every weekend. We're loaded that.
Speaker 4 (00:42):
Between coach Ben and Coach Jackson, we're loaded in the
good stuff.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
Paul.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
So, now when you and your bride were dating, did
you guys dress up for Halloween?
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Did you guys? Ever do it? Do you? Still? Not
so much?
Speaker 3 (00:54):
But oh yeah, back in the day when I was
playing in the American League, that was always a highlight.
The boys love to get dressed up, so we would
we would we would host big parties whether we because
we always had we bought it. We bought a home
in a few different spots, and we had we'd host
some good Halloween shakers, and we had some good ones.
I think back when I was a little more fit.
I think the one year we uh we did the
(01:15):
Canadian and Olympic American or swimmers Olympic swimmers. Yeah, so
we uh yeah, I rocked the speedo and uh.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Whoa, hey Friday, you still have that, you still bring
them up?
Speaker 2 (01:32):
And I just didn't.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
I thought he was gonna tall you dressed his ogal co.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
Yeah exactly, that would be a good one too. But
wow did and you had the medals and everything.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
You guys were good to go.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Yep, and we had a really fun Back in the day,
we used to always, uh have some good Halloween parties.
Halloween was a big, big event in the Jackson Hossehold.
To think after Christmas, it was next most popular with
the kiddos.
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Oh that's awesome.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Exact, I'm gonna let you get your question in here.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
I go.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
I was just talking to coach prior to that. I
number one North of God to hockey doesn't shy away
from a tough schedule and immediately said, is there any
other way right day?
Speaker 2 (02:06):
And I mean yeah, you.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Know, we kind of always think it's, uh, it's better
off to get punched in them mouth a couple of
times early, let everybody know what it's all about.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
And we like to take.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Our guys out east and play some different, uh good
teams out there for the cultural experience. But yeah, we
definitely think at the end of the year it makes
us better. We'll have a couple more losses on our schedule,
but it's more about preparing ourselves and getting ready for
the NCCHC by playing, you know, good teams around the country.
Speaker 4 (02:30):
And one more follow up on that for coach the
travel and Paul, you know, you're with teams, I'm with teams.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
We're both with teams.
Speaker 4 (02:38):
And you travel and everybody thinks that, oh, you just
jump on a plane and then you settle down. What
an easy thing to do. But traveling is twofold in
a day. And I mean number one, it's it's it's
it's a whole thing. Number Two, bonding certainly probably happens
early this season when you make trips to Potsdam, New York.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Talk a little bit.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
About early season travel and what you learn from your
players or what's your with the cohesiveness part of that.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Yeah, you know, good question, I'd see kind of our comment.
Speaker 3 (03:04):
My takeaway was we had a a ver two hour
and twenty minute drive after our game on Saturday night,
and uh, you know, the boys said, the captain's up
to ask we could stop to get some treats along
the way. And but you just hear the guys back
there and they're hooting and holler and there laughing and
they're telling stories and it's fun to see that they're
not just sitting on their phone and it's all quiet
back there. You know, they're they're playing cards and they're
(03:27):
they're having fun. And that's kind of the cool part.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Like you say about getting to kind of go through.
You know, it was a tough day to be honest
on Saturday in the day.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
You know, we had a loss that we didn't feel
great about about our performance, and we had hard meetings.
We addressed a lot of things, changed some guys in
and out of the lineup, and guys came in and
played a really hard, good game. You know, I I
thought we could have you know, won three or four
nothing there, but we won one nothing. You know, a
Jan Spoonar goes in and plays a great game for
a new guy.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
So it was kind of a bonding.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Everybody was playing hard for for Yan, and I just
think the idea of everybody kind of you know, fighting
a little bit of that adversity and getting a good, strong,
solid win. Those are the thing kind of moments you
grow from and you and you try to build on.
So it's the camaraderie you build. But it's also kind
of trying to put your your team in tough situations
and seeing how they respond to it.
Speaker 1 (04:13):
Early definitely, well, jack I know that you want to
get to practice because you have things to prepare for.
We'll see you Saturdays.
Speaker 4 (04:19):
Superstars here they go anywhere, then stay.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Obviously I got to run over.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
To the bed, but I'll be I bet, I bet
Coach Jackson will always hook you up whenever you need
to watch the team. So that's that's my boy.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
I was not like when your goaltender makes us say
that we have that sound effect, but it's an easy
to go.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Well, you know what, we'll put it on the sound
effects fire and well we'll try to add that in.
But I tell you what, Jack, thanks for coming out
here tonight.
Speaker 2 (04:46):
I love your show. I'll hang up and listen.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
All right, sounds good, Jack Michaels. Everybody voice of nor
to go to football and women's basketball. And you know
to that point, you know you guys were talking about
you know, we're responding, and sometimes you know that next
morning it's things are coming fast and furious because it's
a quick turnaround, and you know, everybody's within a coaching
(05:10):
staff has to play their part to whether it's showing
clips and video with you know, your certain personnel that
they're working with, and sometimes that video is kind of
alarming probably a little bit, and you've got to kind
of say, okay, but we have another chance to do
this the way we want to. And and so it's
about how your players kind of respond handle it and
manage it. And you really got to see how they
(05:30):
did that on Friday into Saturday.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Yeah, good point, because it's you basically, you know, you're
I think we're all disappointed in our performance and we
always kind of say it's Wes and R. It's not
just oh, you guys didn't play well enough. It's like, hey,
our staff didn't have you prepared enough. We didn't have
a good enough game plan. We weren't ready as a
whole entire group. So it's all of us together and
we're like, okay, how can we look at what we
did get better? You don't have much time by the
time you get home, you have a meal, didn't talk
(05:56):
to the guys much on Friday night, just kind of
made a couple of quick points, and then you know,
we all break down both. You know, obviously Dylan Simpson
is running our power play and Matt's maybe running our
penalty kill. It wasn't, you know, our best night. Matt
kind of addressed the group with their PK guys and said, hey,
we want to be better, and they they shut them out.
The next night, you know, Dylan's group on the power
play got a big goal for us. Our only goal
(06:18):
was on the power play. So, you know, guys put
in a lot of work. We talked, We had hard
meetings with groups. We had a hard discussion about who's
going to be in, who's going to be out, and
you know, you just kind of try to deal with
it honestly and upfront. You know, you don't want to
be negative you just try to be you know, straightforward
and candid with guys, and then you make your best
decisions and and you prepare to play the next game.
You try to reset by kind of by the time
(06:39):
you have your pregame meal at one then kind of
say hey, okay, it's done, let's move on. We're we've
talked about things we've got to get better at. Now
it's all about kind of resetting and getting our mental
approach ready and getting ready to battle and make it
a hard game. And then you know, the end of
the day you kind of say, well, we went got
a good win and we're four and two and we're
going back home, so you know, it's it's it's that
whole idea about just saying, hey, we're all accountable to
(06:59):
each other. We're all kind of working together to to
be part of something that's successful.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
And you go through it's kind of like a family.
Speaker 3 (07:05):
You go through you have hard, honest discussions and can
the conversations and then you move on you and I
think when you get through it, you kind of feel
better about it.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
One guy, I want to just pull out of a
hat here and just have you comment on him, because
this is just me from watching on a bus and
I'm listening to Darren CALLT and I matched it up
and I'm watching the game call and I said, you know,
just seeing him and I know he's only a freshman,
but body type wise, boy, it's quite a frame. David
Klee when he starts packing on some of these you know,
(07:37):
veteran muscles and things and being through the program, I'm
kind of excited about what you can build with that
with that young guy.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:44):
You know, the nice thing about David is he he
really has a mentality and he understands his role. You know,
his dad was a pro in the NHL for a
long time, many many years. Ken Glee was a great
defenseman the NHL probably I don't know, probably played a.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
Dozen years at least.
Speaker 3 (07:58):
Wow, So I'm sure David was a rounded a lot
saw it understood about, you know, how hard it is
and and what makes guys successful at the pro level.
And I think with David, like he didn't play for
the first few games for US, you know he'd come in.
Was the guy that was a captain of a championship
team in the Skegan there was a good player, was
a captain championship Clark Cup and he came in here
and he sat out our first uh, you know, four
(08:21):
games or so and five games.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
Then when he went in he was ready.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
You know, he was just kind of he didn't he
didn't bitch, he didn't complain, He just kind of said, hey,
I'm ready to go. And he was good in the dot.
He he played in all situations. And then on Saturday
night we started their line just because they had a
mentality and those guys were physical and they were hard
to play against and they checked and you know, obviously
he made a really nice.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Assist on the home of our goals.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
So really nice to see a guy like that just
go in and and by his time and not complain
when and he was ready for his opportunity when the
opportunity presented itself.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Yeah, And I think that's the whole point. And you
hope that that translates through a roster because when you're
not in the lineup, it's so easy to be down
on on cell phll what a I do or what
you know? And that's not the attitude that you need.
You need to be have the attitude so that you
get the call you're ready, and you can't have a
few shifts to warm up. You got to be ready
(09:11):
from the jump, even though you may have not played
a game or two basically, and that's the type of
thing that you hope kind of permeates through the roster.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
You know, we talk about being good teammates, and it's
easy to be a good teammate when everything's.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
Going great for you.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
But you know, along the way, we've got no injuries
right now, and different guys are getting opportunities, and when
your number is not called, you got to be prepared
and ready to go battle and make your practice. You know,
your Stanley Cup. And you know Tyler Young did the
same thing. He wasn't in and when he went in,
he did a good job and actually told the guys today,
I talked about our story in twenty sixteen when we
(09:44):
had Christian Atlanta and Hayden Shaw, and they are both
kind of platuning in and out along the way to
our all year. They were good players, you know, obviously,
you know Woolli is a good player in the American
League who won Defense from the Year in the American
League and has played NHL games, And those guys kind
of sat out side out along the way and right
to the end where they both you know, Hayden played
(10:04):
on Thursday in the National Championship and then well he
went in on Saturday in the National Championship game and
they both contributed. So just kind of told that story
about being ready and when your opportunity comes, you got
to be prepared. You can't be you know, a sulking
or a worry about the things. You worry about being
in shape and being ready and being sharp. So when
you get the chance to go, you're adding value.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
A great former blue liner for the University of North
Dakota is the longtime head coach at the Minnesota to
Luke Bulldogs. He's got those Bulldogs cranking over again. There's
seven to one here coming in to open up NCHC
play for the two teams. What a weekend ahead here
Friday and Saturday night. What an opportunity for your team.
I'm sure they're saying the same thing for their team. Basically,
(10:45):
what stands out to you when you look at the
Bulldogs already on film and what you've seen from them
this year.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
Yeah, Well, Scott Sandland's obviously, you know, National champion multiple
times and you know, obviously played at U and d
We all learned from Gino and their staff, you know,
Carrie and Dean Blaze and John marsh All, those guys,
So they kind of have a lot of traits I
think in their program that we have in ours about
competitiveness and being hard to play against and playing good
two way hockey. When I watch their team, they haven't
(11:14):
given up many goals. They've checked well, and their power
plays excellent. The top line of the Plant brothers and
Shogaby has been really good. So I just kind of,
you know, they have some good ability, but they got
a real strong, structured defensive game as well. So it'll
be a good challenge for us, and we can't wait
to play those guys. It's always a battle.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Are they just relying on one goaltender right now or
have they mixed in a little bit or how have
they gone so far in the pipes?
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Yeah, I think it's Guyanne is how you say it right.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
He's been excellent.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
You know, he's played the majority of them and he's
been really strong, really solid. But I think their defensive
structure has been real strong in front of him as well.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
And of course, you know the thing about the Bulldogs
and I think this has been when they've been at
their best in recent seasons, when he's had those great runs.
Is a turnover in a bad part of the ice
is a bad thing for any team that's playing them.
They're going to make you pay. And I think that's
kind of this version of the Bulldogs is when turnovers happen,
they're they're on top of you in a hurry.
Speaker 3 (12:07):
Yeah, we've talked about that, you know, about that kind
of puck management or taken what the game gives you.
You know, when when we have a chance to make
plays and be creative and cutlatterally and skate lotterally on.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
Entry and and guys use their skill.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
We want them to do that absolutely, but we've also
kind of said, hey, when when the other team's checking
well and you have not much time and space and
you got back pressure, you have to take what the
game gives you in advanced pucks and kind of live
for another day so that they can't counter and transition
quickly against you. So, you know, I thought our guys did.
It was probably our We've had some really good nights,
you know, Friday against Minnesota that we did a really
(12:40):
good job with our puck management. I thought we did
a great job on Saturday about kind of picking our
spots and creating when we could, but being smart on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
So that'll be an important factor for sure in the
game against the Lute.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
Well all weekend, Well for the fans, we're going to
enjoy what costumes and the students bring.
Speaker 2 (12:56):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
You know, I don't know if you had any of
your students athletes, you know, be a part of the
Halloween Bash last night, but usually the student athletes stress up.
A few of them do, so I don't know if
you saw any of the costumes out there, but you
probably just started like, okay, fellas, have a good time,
and yeah, sure you look after those kids that are
there to trick or treat.
Speaker 2 (13:16):
Yeah, I know.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
Coach Simpson was there with his daughters. Yeah, they were
there playing hockey with the boys. And I got the
report from our guys and said it was fun, it
was well attended and they did a great job as usual.
So we always appreciate the fans turning out and our
guys do a great job in the community.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
Yeah, the community aspect when the interactions are allowed to happen,
I know, they really embrace it and they like to
be a part of it, So thanks for having them
be a part of that. On a big week ahead
for you against Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday night.
Coach Jackson, thanks for this good luck this week.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
Paul, I gotta do a quick shout out to our
friends that are in the crowd and my lovely wife
Carrie Jackson, and then Kim and Jeff Vegan and Melissa
Coolman are hair sponsors of our team.
Speaker 1 (13:55):
So well, that's awesome. Well, welcome, welcome, that's awesome. Thanks
for coming out and join in and being part of
the program tonight, I tell you what. That's great and
we're having so much fun here. We're just gonna continue
to have some fun. We're going to talk about We
talked about how the community was able to interact last
night with the Halloween bash for the kids, Well, how
about for people of my age that maybe we want
(14:16):
to get out and interact and play with a team.
I've done it before. I was really sore afterwards, but
it was so much fun. We're going to talk about
hit with the Hawks as U and D tennis head
coach Tom Boysen and some student athletes will be by
to talk to us next. As Hawk Talk continues all
across the Fighting Hawks radio network
