Speaker 1 (00:01):
We continue on Hawk Talk tonight inside the five or
six pub Hugoes Pure Market. There's still plenty of time
to come on down and join us. A little bit
over half of our program remaining tonight ahead we'll get
caught up on Orth to go to hockey with head
coach Dane Jackson, who is picking the brains of our
current guesst Derek Schmidt and SCHMIDI I don't think. I
(00:21):
don't think coach Jackson has a vacation to Murray, Kentucky
in his immediate future. But you never down so they
don't have hockey.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
I don't anymore. I remember they used to too close enough.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
You can make it into Nashville, I spose, or you
never know what you can find when you run out
of things to see and in Murray, Kentucky. But you
guys made it home with the win, got you to
your seventh win, of course, seven and four. Now with
game twelve on the horizon and they you know, just
kind of your average end of the season, filled the schedule,
a whole hum of a football game, no anything but
(00:55):
south to go to State in chance to get to
the kind of that magic eight. And what do we
know about the Jam crabbits.
Speaker 3 (01:02):
Well, I think, first of all, like you said, man,
obviously a really big football game, and then obviously great
to have it at our place, you know, to be
able to finish up the regular season at home, like really,
you know, we want to make that place really hard
to play in on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
I think our.
Speaker 3 (01:16):
Students, you know, hopefully excited about being able to come
out one last time here before Thanksgiving and have some
fun that really make that place rocking. And then you know,
I always talk about filling the corners. When you show
up and you know there's people in the pre game
and there in the corners start to fill up, you
know there's going to be a lot of people in
the stadium, you know, that day. So you know, I
think is what it's about, man, We want to get
(01:38):
this place to to really you know, important football games
in November and in December, you know in ground forks
like That's what we've talked about with our guys.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
That's been the goal.
Speaker 3 (01:47):
And obviously this is you know, our first opportunity with
our staff to be able to come in here and
do that. So it's a it's a big deal and
we're playing a really good team. I mean, obviously, you know,
they've been in the playoffs every year, I think since
twenty twelve. You know, have obviously had some injuries and
things like that that have taken place, but everybody has that.
This year, I think the one thing that you know,
(02:07):
what happened to them a few weeks ago here now
about a month ago, so now they've kind of figured
it out as far as hey, this is how we're
gonna win games.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
These are the guys.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
We've got to get the you know, the ball in
their hands. Defensively, they haven't missed a beat the entire time.
There's still who they've been for the last you know, decades.
So we're going to have to do a good job
there of really playing tough and playing hard and and uh,
you know, moving the football.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
And it's not going to be easy. There's gonna be.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
You know, some some some ones and twos and minus
ones and minus twos in there. But I just think
you got to keep landing body blows and keep fighting.
That's what football is about, you know, is really it's
a it's going to be a physical deal on Saturday,
and then our defense has got to do a great
job at home. I think all great teams. Okay, what
sport you're talking about? Hockey football? You look at the Patriots,
you look at you know, whoever you defend your home turf,
(02:54):
you know, like you're really good at home, and we
got to be able to be that here on Saturday.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Because they're a good team.
Speaker 1 (02:58):
And they come in obviously seven and four as well,
started seven and zero, and then of course injuries and
the adversity, and like you said, they've kind of figured
it out a little bit. How do you, guys as
a staff, kind of draw that line in the sand
of looking at what they've recently done, but then also
having respect for them, you know, the first part of
the year, and how do you how do you walk
that line with making sure.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Teams that are you know, even talking to the guys
down and in Murray that they haven't won a game
and there's another team in uh in their area that's
you know, only lost one game and they really feel like, hey,
they're a better football team. It's just they play in
the Missouri Valley and the other team doesn't, you know,
type of deals. So you're gonna play quality opponents every
single week. Obviously, you know, we know a lot about
South Dakota State just because of geographically how close they
(03:40):
are to us. We've been in the same league for
them forever, you know, going back to the Division two days,
and our fan bases border each other. So I just
I just think it's you know, these are the type
of games that you come to North Dakota for. You know,
when we when we go on the road recruiting and
talk to recruits and say, hey, man, you're gonna you
know what I mean, it's gonna come down to late
November and you got a chance to be able to
(04:00):
win a conference championship or make the playoffs. You got
to be able to go beat you know, another school
that has the coda behind its name, And those are
the type of kids that we want to you know
that we want to recruit guys that they perk up,
you know when they hear those you know, those matchups
and want to play in those games, because that's you know,
that's what it's about.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Like that's I've said it.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
A million times, like you know, this is what college
athletics is all about. It's about rolling up your sleeves
and going to battle with your brothers and guys that
you've you know, done a lot of hard things with
here over the last year, and now you know, you
do all those things so that you're ready to go
and be at your best here on Saturdays in November.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
And obviously it'll give you, guys, if it isn't a
preview of the playoffs, a taste of it. But it's
also do you guys look at it as a playoff
game and playoffs started now for your group?
Speaker 3 (04:41):
Yeah, I mean, you never know what's going to happen.
I think you know, both teams probably have an opportunity
to get in even if they don't have a positive result,
just because of you know, some of the prior bodies
of work that they've done. But yeah, I mean I
think you know, we're looking at it as you know,
like I said earlier off of that, this is this
is what we're about. These are the games that that
(05:01):
we want to go and play in at this time
of year. So you know, these are the type of
games if if you want to earn another home game,
you got to go and win, you know, on Saturday.
I think you know it is what it is. You
don't want to make it any bigger than that. It's
still about our guys. You know, putting in and competing
and putting in work here Monday through Friday, and uh,
and then they're going to write a story on Saturday
based off of what we do from one to four o'clock.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
So we got to be uh, we got to be
at our best during that time.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
From what you've seen, what will they try to do
against you this weekend?
Speaker 3 (05:28):
Well, I think defensively there they are who they are.
I think they really trust their their guys. I think
their physical up front, they uh, they got a number
of guys up front that have played a lot of
football that have been you know, top players you know
in our league. I like their box. I think both
their linebackers are good players. They've went out and got
a few dbs that have you know, filled some holes
from some of the some of the guys that they've lost.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
And then offensively, you know.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
Really the guy they're playing at quarterback right now and
uh and then they're the you know, the starter that
that went down and in week eight? Are are They're
They're similar as far as how athletic they are. Obviously
the other kids, you know, a different deal as far
as throwing the football and and things like that. But
I don't feel like they're not doing anything just because
you know, he's not playing the They're they're handing the
(06:12):
keys to the car to the next guy and say, hey, man,
like we want you to go run it, and run
it the exact same way you know that we've been
doing it before. Are all the concepts in that were
in before?
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah? Probably not.
Speaker 3 (06:21):
They're focusing in on you know, maybe four or five
concepts that they want him to really be able to
to be able to read and and uh, you know
full field stuff where you know, players are coming into
his vision and players are coming into his vision and
things like that. So yeah, I mean when they what
they've you know, really had the unfortunate is last week
just playing Illinois State, was you know the the uh
(06:42):
the special teams, you know airs that they had. They
they funneled the kickoff, they had a pick six right
after that, and then they you know, the punter dropped
the ball and then he got tackled and and you
know it was thirty five to nothing with with ten
minutes left to.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
Go in the second quarter.
Speaker 3 (06:57):
So I think that that you know, after that, you know,
it gets to be thirty five twenty one in the
fourth and you know, they got the ball at the
thirty yard line going in with a chance to make
it twenty eight to thirty five. So really, you know,
I think played well, you know for a majority of
the game, just had all those you know, mistakes kind
of self inflicted wounds that they had early in the game.
And then the week before, you know, they played South
Dakota right after we did, and it was virtually the
(07:19):
same score as a one score game, you know, at
the end of the game. So we know that, hey,
they're they're capable. Like I understand, they've lost some games
and things like that, but they've been a successful program
here for a number of years. And you're gonna have to,
like I said, you're gonna have to go win. They're
not gonna beat themselves two weeks in a row. Like,
we're gonna have to go out there, We're gonna have
to earn it. We're gonna have to go take it.
Speaker 1 (07:36):
A lot to mate obviously and rightfully so with the
playoffs implications and situations, but it's also senior day for
your squad. A lot of emotions that going to that
this week as well.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Yeah, that's you know something that we talked about here
this morning we have our you know, kind of our
introductory meeting here in the morning with with introducing everything
that that the coaches have worked on Sunday night and
all day Monday, and and that was a big piece
of it too for us obviously want to be able
to recognize those guys. I mean I've been, you know,
really really impressed just as far as their approach, especially
(08:07):
with the way college athletics is today. You know, we
when we came in and uh in December and really
came in the day that the transfer portal opened up,
you know, last year in December and really never had
a guy go in like it was when you see
coaching changes nowadays, like it's mass exodus of.
Speaker 2 (08:24):
People leaving right you know.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
So a credit to the leadership and just you know,
I think the brotherhood and and why this place is
always I said, it's different. It just runs deeper. It's
not about the coaches, it's not about who's in front
of them. It's about the brotherhood in that locker room,
you know. And as long as I've told those guys that,
like that's what makes this place special. As long as
you guys stay together and you guys understand how special
this place is and want to want to make it
(08:47):
a better place than when you found it. Like that's
that's the cool part about North Dakota. You know, it's
not about the coaches, It's not about you know, all
those types of things, Like it's about that locker room.
Like that's the most important thing that brotherhood and those
guys put their head down. We you know, obviously implemented
some new things defensively schemes and you know, practice tempos
(09:07):
and practice schedules and you know how we're going to
do things, you know, the way that that way we
wanted it done. And they just you know, like I said,
they didn't. There was no you know, bowing up to
what we were doing. And and uh, you know, they
just they they they did a great job just of
you know, putting their head down and going to work
and making the best of the situation.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
And and uh, any good.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
Team, you know, any great team that you're going to
be a part of, like they're going to be player led,
Like the players are the guys who are gonna who
are going to lead those to those teams.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
And our guys have done a great job of that.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
And it's top ten because you know the younger guys
are going to want to pull on that rope extra
hard for them. And and it's really you guys have
done the work to be in the situation you are
where all you need to do now go out and
win a football game, and you can. I don't think
you can say we could have done one more thing
perhaps in our control to help our positioning now and
then turn it over to the committee for Sunday morning. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
I mean that's that's what That's the exactly right.
Speaker 3 (10:00):
You know, like I said, your your your goal is
to be able to play in games in November. Like
the games in November are the ones you remember, you
know like that, those are the ones that you want
to make sure that there's some meaning to them.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
And that's the goal.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Man.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
We got to go out there, like I said, and
uh and really do a great job of getting off
to a fast start and getting some energy in that
building and then just feeding off it. I've been, you know,
in games in that building. I've been a fan of
games in that building. I've been a coach and a
game in that building, and that place can lift up
a team, you know what I mean? In Green that
you know, it's just different, you know, And I think
our guys feel that when when it gets going on
(10:35):
those days and all of a sudden, you know, you
start feeling some magic and some things start rolling in
your direction.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Man, It's it's really hard for the people on the
other sideline.
Speaker 3 (10:44):
So, like I said before, man, I just really hope
that our fan base comes out and and understands how
important this game is for our team and for our
players and and for our you know, I always say
for the family business man, like it's gonna be it's
gonna be a heck of a deal and a lot
of fun on Saturday afternoon.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
And then from there, like we said, we turn it
over and all eyes immediately come back to Sunday. Have
you getting a chance as a fan of football. Have
you given yourself any opportunity to kind of look back,
look at the field, see what's going on, what's jumping
out to you? Or are you just all locked in
and that's okay if you are.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
Yeah, No, I haven't really.
Speaker 3 (11:15):
I know Bill's on the committee and we haven't even
really you know.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
Talked all that much about it.
Speaker 3 (11:19):
Like you're just you know, focused in on what our
job is we know, the easiest way for us to
be able to to be able to get in the
tournament is to go and win and play really well
on Saturday. I think we do that, we'll have a
great opportunity to be able to be able to play
in the Layer Center.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Again.
Speaker 3 (11:34):
I really think that our resume, you know, we win
this weekend, we'll we'll we'll have that type of weight
on it and we'll look you know, as good a
stack up against you know, pretty much anybody else, you know,
minus the top couple seeds there in the country. You know,
just as far as what we've been able to do,
I think there's you know, as long as we win
this weekend, there's a lot of respect on you know,
what we've been able to do, and not just the wins,
(11:54):
but you know, playing some teams down to the wire
that are really good football teams too as well.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
And build some momentum going into what should be next week.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
You want to be playing well, you know, if you
want to go in in the tournament, playing really good football,
and you know that that is you know, the byproduct
of us going out there and doing what we need
to do on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (12:14):
All right, eighth wins out there. Let's go get it.
Thanks for this, best of luck Saturday and then we'll
go from there.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
Sounds good. Thanks Daron, you have a good week, you bet.
Speaker 1 (12:21):
Eric Schmidt North got Ahead football coach joining us again
funding Hawks and South Dakota State just after one o'clock
on Saturday inside the Letter Center, fill the corners. They've
got that great promotion going on. Twelve game, twelve dollars tickets.
Weather looks to be phenomenal for November tailgating. You should
need any more encouragement to get up, get out there early,
and have hopefully at least a couple more chances to
(12:44):
do that at the Alers Center. But again, we'll see
what happens come Sunday. But North to Gooa will chase
it's eighth win of the regular season on Saturday with
South Dakota State. This is Hawk Talk. We're inside to
five h six Pub Hugoes Peer Market, downtown Grand Forks.
North Dakota Hockey is right in the heart of their
first half of the season, coming off of a split
with Arizona State. Here at the Ralph they get ready
(13:04):
for an exhibition contest this weekend. We'll get caught up
with their head coach Dane Jackson set to join us
the other side of this timeout. It's Hawk Talk inside
the five oh six pub, Hugos pure Market, and all
along the finning Hawks Radio Network.
