Speaker 1 (00:00):
Right back inside the five o six punk tonight Hugoes
Peer Market downtown Grand Forks for Hawk Talk on this
Tuesday nights on the FINDA Knoks Radio Network. Our thanks
to Derek Schmidt for joining us tonight for an extended
recamp of Murray State to look ahead to South Dakota State,
and I guess and he was visiting maybe during the
(00:22):
break with our next coach and Againstein Jackson, maybe you
guys were comparing Murray State and Clarkson notes on a
couple of unique trips in the in the early stages
in November for the two groups. But no, I'm best
alloted to coach Schmid this weekend. Dane, thanks for coming
down with us here on a Tuesday nights on a
bit of a unique week. But glad to have you
in on hawk Talk.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Appreciate It's great to be here. Love coming down.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
So let's uh, let's start. We'll go back last week obviously,
you know, Saturday leaves a little bit of a taste
in the mouth for everyone considered, but all in all,
go back to a Friday night performance in a victory.
There's still plenty of good to take out of a
split with Arizona State.
Speaker 2 (01:00):
Yeah, for sure, you definitely focus on your We always say,
you know, we're not looking at the result, we're working
the performance. And you know, the performance on Saturday wasn't
poor like we were. I thought we were working and
engaged in the game. We had some big breakdowns, I thought, so,
you know, obviously, when you're outshooter team forty to fifteen,
you expect to win. But I still felt that we
(01:22):
kind of let them hang around because we gave up
really good chances when we did give them a shot,
and we weren't really executing quite at the high level
you need to to score sometimes when a goalie is
playing really well and they were defending heart. So yeah,
a little bit of some parts of disappointment, but overall,
you know, our team was trending the right way. You know,
when I talked to the boys today after a video,
I just said, hey, like, we're If you ask me,
(01:44):
you know, how we're doing after twelve games, I wouldn't
really point to being eight and four. I'd be kind
of points like, I feel like we're playing When we
play hockey our way, we're really hard to play against,
and that to me is kind of the exciting part
that we got. We got guys buying in, we're competing
hard or managing the puck. Well. We got a system
that kind of we believe in and we all kind
(02:04):
of check and work the same way. And I think
we're really hard to play against. You know. I reference
with some of our veteran guys. I said, you know,
I think sometimes last year when we played I remember
when we played in Western Michigan, you know, and we
looked up with half of through the game and we
had eight shots on that and that never happens to us.
But they were their pressure and they're checking and their
physicality was it was it was hard hard to play against.
(02:24):
And I feel like we've done that to other team
sometimes so to our staff. I think that's kind of
the exciting part that we feel that we're putting. We
have a group, and we're putting in a system that
we're we're hard to play against when we're playing our
best game.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
Yeah, And I think you know, we've talked about it too.
It seems like every every time we come out of
the twelve games, your group is learning something or we're
learning about the group. And it seems like even on
the four losses. It hasn't really been anything that's widespread,
anything that would cause a panic. Maybe it makes it
a little more frustrating if it is, if there's a
little bit of self control element to it. But the
(02:57):
group obviously knew what they needed to better coming down
Saturday and showing that third period especially, so you know,
the group just seems like they have the right mindset
to to trust that process.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
Yeah, that's a that's well said. Actually, you know, I
think we have we have guys that are buying in
and they they want to they want to work, they
want to check, they want to compete, and uh, I
think when you have that, that's a great place to start.
You know. I was kind of got me thinking. I
was reading an article about uh Boston University today about
things have not gone great for them and they have
a lot of talented players, and you know, the coach
(03:28):
was kind of just you know, Pandelphia was saying, at
I don't think we're really you know, playing good hockey,
you know, and uh, I can kind of live when
we lose, and and yeah, we make some mistakes, but
we're we're overall, we're doing what we're trying to do.
Play and play good hockey and and kind of respect
the game by how much we care about our two
hundred foot game. So that's, uh, that's the positive that
we definitely will take away from, uh from the last weekend.
Speaker 1 (03:50):
Talk about Ben Strint at NCC FOURD a week again,
second to three times and it's it's it's hard for
me when you see this as a group because it
really is but just some into visual success and it
couldn't happen to a better guy.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Yeah, Ben's Tandon is one of those guys that you
hope your daughter ends up dating. He's just that kind
of guy, you know, just a good man, and uh, yeah,
you want success for guys like that, a guy that
has played four years. And you know Ben has had
some tough times with us with injuries and you know,
getting NHL draft pick and still coming in and maybe
not getting to play all the minutes he want. You know,
(04:24):
he hadn't really got to play in the power play
before now. But you know he's playing hard, he's playing fast.
You know, he's he's just a direct north player and
when you kind of have that, you know he's a
powerful kid. He skates really well, he shoots it hard.
You know, I don't think he's got high level playmaking
or kind of instincts, but just the fact that he
knows who he is and he does it really well,
(04:45):
and he consistently challenges defenseman to you know, handle his
speed because he says, I'm taking it to the net,
and you know, it's kind of like a running back
just as I'm coming at you, you know, and they's
not going to be much east west. I'm just coming
at you and see if he can stop me. So yeah,
I just really have for him. And you know, when
he's gotten those situations to play in the power play
and play in big moments, he's stepped up and been outstanding.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Now as we look to this week, it's a unique week. Obviously,
the Under eighteen Exhibition always is. Oftentimes we've seen it
where it's either seemingly going into Christmas the end of
the first half, used it to start the second half.
Now it's in the middle of the first half. Is
that just the way the schedules worked out or a
little bit different dynamic in that game too.
Speaker 2 (05:28):
Yeah. We always try to, you know, book with these guys,
you know, a year or two in advance, and sometimes
they just have things that are going on already, but yeah,
it's it's it's always been a great, great opportunity for
us to play those guys. You know, there's some of
they are the best kids in their age group in
the country, and you know, for them to get them
in our building for recruiting purposes, and it's it's a
(05:50):
great opportunity. You know, we want our guys to always,
whenever we put the jersey on play at our highest
level and compete to kind of represent our program with pride,
and we'll for sure be doing that.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
On Friday gives you guys a chance to work on
some things. You can kind of dictate how you want
to do, rest and all of that without having to
settle for a true off weekend. And then at the
end of it, when you come out and do some
work on Friday night, like you mentioned, you've got some
pretty good skill that you're gonna get to test some
things against if you will.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Yeah, and we always find that against the national program,
like you you know, if you give them time and
space and give them time and the power play, they're
gonna they're gonna make plays and they're gonna make it pay.
So we've talked already with our group about saying, hey,
we gotta we gotta really check well and try to
take away their rush chances, take away their transition ability,
and try to stay you know, stay off the power
(06:36):
you have them been on power play a lot and
not take too many penalties. So those are kind of
keys that we've always found with these guys because they're
they're a good smart, creative players. You know. Obviously our
guys are probably in general a little bit bigger and
stronger and older, and we got to use that advantage
with put a body on them and make it physically
imposing and be in their face a lot without hard
we check, do you guys change much this week? Now?
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Going into an exhibition knowing that you've got the holiday
next week and a big non conference series on the horizon,
how are you managing things this week with the e
eighteens coming in.
Speaker 2 (07:06):
Yeah, we give our guys the extra day. We always
take Sunday off, and we gave them we made it
optional on Monday. There's still quite a few guys that went.
There were some guys that were a little bit dinged
up or tired or store or whatever, so we had
them stay off. But they went off. They went out
and played and had some fun. We had the tunes
on and I think they had a little bit of
Canadians playing against the Americans and had a little bit
of a fun day. And then they had a good
(07:26):
hard practice today. So yeah, we'll try to get some
decent work in the next couple days and then probably
play Friday and probably give them the weekend.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Off and then get reset for BAMIGI. And of course
we looked at it as fans at the schedule. Okay,
well the under eighteens are here, so that'll be a
good time. We're gonna finally get to see Tyler Young,
We're gonna finally get to see Dult Andrew. But that
hasn't been the case. These guys are drawn into action
but are responding.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
For you. Yeah, it was. You know, we were kind
of talking about being great teammates and had guys sitting
out consistently for a while, and next thing, you know,
kind of bang bang bang. We had three of our
forwards out with Zekresky and Kernan and Rick Wood. So
uh yeah, everybody, every available forward is called in action,
and those guys have played well. You know, Tyl the
(08:07):
Young especially went in and his pace of play and
his tenacity. It's high end. He's a competitive guy and
he knows how to play the game. So he's gone
and done a really nice job in a high role.
Dalton Andrew didn't get to play as much, but you know,
Dalton's put a ton of time into his training over
the summer and kind of reshaped his body, and we
knew he was ready to play as he went in
(08:28):
and did a good job for us. So that's kind
of that mentality about being you know, prepared for the opportunity.
That's what means success, you know, So the guys were
ready for it and they were successful and given the opportunity.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
You talk about doing some reading a good article on BU.
You're obviously a big fan of the game. Have you
gotten much of a chance? We're kind of a shul
made the same thing to kind of look back and
just look at college hockey to hold anything jumping out
of you, any surprises or things that that are coming
to the front of your mind as you look at
the college hockey a month and a half in.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Yeah, I think the parody. You know, you just kind
of somethingmes you're kind of watching guys teams that are
in the top ten around you, and it seems like
there's a lot of splits. And one thing that I've
kind of seen is, you know, I think the the
talent pyramid was always you know, I guess, fairly steep,
and it just seems to have kind of widened where
there's so many good players. So even if we, you know,
(09:16):
get our top three four picks or something that we
want to get, I think, you know, but Midgie and
these other teams maybe they're just slightly down the total
pool from us, are getting really good players as well.
They you know, they're so we better do a great
job on our recruiting and how we coach them, because
the the guys that are getting to the next level
of school are still very good players, and they're getting
(09:38):
coach hard as well. So there's there's a lot of
parody in college hockey.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
Here, and that's just in the summertimes and the off
the ice stuff. Now, what makes it even harder for you.
Fridays and Saturday Nights had another big one on the horizon.
Obviously with the home and home. It'll be another key
on conference with but Midgie not to look too far ahead,
but it's there.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
Oh yeah, I love playing those guys. You know, it's
great your own proximity and a lot of our fan
base traveled both places, so it's a lot of fun.
We love playing those guys. They got, they got, They
do a great job, you know, Ernie Seratory and their staff,
they just they got hard on those kids that compete
in Battle and you don't play there four years and
it's a over the years of just over the twenty years.
(10:16):
I remember when we first played them, it was it
was more like, you better beat these guys twice. And
now we've had a lot of games where we've won
and tied or whatever, be like close closed matches. Every
game seems to be a one goal game, so you
got to be ready. You cannot take anything for granted.
You better, you know, you better make sure you're working
and competing, because then that's when you're really playing at
(10:37):
a high level. Then that's when maybe an extra player
two can come out with if our guys have a
couple of our guys have a little bit extra skill,
but if you don't have your mentality and your and
your be ready to work like that doesn't matter.
Speaker 1 (10:49):
Well, of course, that's a week plus away focus right now,
getting the work in, getting some of that rest in,
and then the U eighteens Friday night. So keep the
process going. Jack So appreciate you coming out tonight and
look forward to seeing it on Friday night.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
Yeah, thanks for having me. Appreciate you.
