Speaker 1 (00:02):
And we continue tonight on Hawk Talk inside the five
oh six pump. He goes Peer Market downtown. We had
a great visit with Eric Schmidt at Football Coach in
North to go to football again. They get ready for
NDSU this weekend. North Dakota Hockey this weekend is going
to head south on I twenty nine, leaving tomorrow in
preparation for a two game in CCHC series with the
(00:23):
Omaha Mavericks that you can catch here on the network
Friday night at just after seven o'clock from Baxter Arena.
Mike and I'll have the bud Light pregame show up
for you at six thirty as we welcomand the associate
head coach of North Dakota Hockey Matt's maybe's Maabe, thanks
for making us a part of I'm sure busy Tuesday
night is you're getting ready to jump on the bus
here tomorrow afternoon and head to Omah.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
The Wednesday departure is a little unique, but happy to
be here.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Thanks for having me. We haven't been too far removed.
I must be used to the well, flashback to some
of the older days at least of it. Yeah, even Wednesday,
it's like a USHL schedule. We're jumping on the bus
right hour. At least we're not playing and tomorrow night. Yeah, absolutely, right,
then be about the only thing. Let's we'll get to,
of course in Omaha series. Let's let's start by backing
up last weekend to split it home with Minnesota Duluth
(01:09):
to open NHC play in and obviously back and forth
Friday night to end up on the short end in
an overtime decision. But just thoughts on the group Friday
night to getting down but coming back and then once
you get to that three on three, it's really a crapshoot.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
I think the thing that really jumps out is the
resilience kind of stick with it, find a way at
the end and claw back into the game. I thought
that was great. You know, obviously not our best and
that was something we looked at post game, you know,
things that we could do better, But to find a
way to claw back into it is you know, I
think that speaks to the group, and that's something that
we've seen behind the scenes, you know, throughout the course
of the preseason and the early part of the season.
(01:48):
You know, just the character that those guys have in
the resiliency. You know, it was good. It was a
good lesson for us, you know, one that we're not
out of it and to really kind of what it
takes to be sharp night in and night out. You know,
good to get the point, but obviously we want a
little bit more there. Yeah, we talked about to seen
it a couple of times. I thought, you go back
to Saturday of Saint Thomas, Friday Night Minnesota, just mature
(02:10):
wins for a young group. Is there such a thing
as a mature loss? And was Friday Night one of those,
like you mentioned, just kind of the learning curve and
especially to carry you over into Saturday and play the
way did Yeah. You know, I think with a group
of new guys, you know, specifically with a bunch of
young guys, it's one thing to learn how to win
at the lower levels. It's a different thing to learn
(02:31):
how to win at this level. And you know, I
think that's a process we're still going through. And you know,
we've gotten better at it. We've responded quicker, you know,
we haven't put ourselves in huge holes, so to speak.
But you know, it is a process to really understand it.
It's different than you know, even if you're playing at
the college level last year and this is new to you,
you know, the pressure is different, you know, I think
(02:52):
the level is different to Louth for example. Man, they
were playing good, right, They had a bunch of guys
that were really clicking. The goalie was on fire.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
You know. So I think it is just understanding the challenge.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
And you know, the good part that we talked about
this week with their guys is we set the bar
for ourselves now. The goal is to meet that night
in a night out and you know, minimize the slips.
Speaker 1 (03:12):
He mentioned the guys from delutha Tomline especially all the
hockey you've seen live video, whatever are they are? They
just on a different level right now, especially the way
that their month is gone.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
Yeah, I mean they were playing really well.
Speaker 3 (03:24):
The playmaking was outstanding there, dangerous, you know, when they
had chances, they were capitalizing, you know, especially you know
at special teams right they had more time and space there.
They were really a threat. So nice for us to
kind of cool them down as the weekend went on.
But you know, they were playing great hockey and obviously
it's shown in the record in regards to the team
(03:44):
play too.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Yeah, Saturday night was like you said, I think that
might be the let's put that one up on the wall.
What was different or what changed I guess from the
time we left Friday night to coming back Saturday.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
Yeah, they'll get into hockey nerdy talking about but yeah,
keeping and beas here. You know, I think the if
you could break it down to the simplest thing, we
were playing faster and we were playing simpler. You know,
the puck was moving north. We were supporting the puck
so much better. You know, hockey is a tough game
when you put yourself on islands. You know, there's the
teams are so good at checking. The structure is so
(04:17):
good that the windows are so tight. You need guys
around the pucket. I thought we did such a better
job of that on Saturday night. One just getting it
moving and two getting guys around it. And you know,
it's funny. We we showed our guys a clip of
a rugby team head into Saturday night where they're just
making little passes, little passes, and it sure looks like
(04:37):
there's a line of defense, but over time you wear
them down. And you know, if you could visualize that,
that was the goal kind of heading into Saturday night,
and I thought our guys did a tremendous job of that.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
And of course, anytime anybody's got to go to full
two hundred feet that's always a big benefit too.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
Those offensive guys don't like playing defense a lot, so
if they're spending time in their own own zone, that's.
Speaker 2 (04:57):
A that's a win for our group.
Speaker 1 (04:59):
So and obviously we come out of it, and it's
I've kind of chuckled a little bit when I saw
it because we talked about the plant plant Shangaby line.
Two of the guys had spent the majority of the
weekend trying to shut those guys down come out as
offensive players of the week and only Josephson and Ben Strittan.
Because hockey's a funny game that way, right, Funny how
it works.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
It's it's a fickle game. It's a funny game, and
if you play it the right way, you get rewarded.
So it's not always with goals and assists it was
for those guys this weekend, but you know it does
have a funny way. Of course, correct in overtime, what
are you seeing on Ali a month?
Speaker 1 (05:29):
And obviously he I wouldn't say kind of the lesser
known of some of the freshman and incoming young guys.
But he's really seemed just taking stringth right now.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
Yeah, And if you think about kind of his process
to get to us, it happened late.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
You know, he was in a position.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Where he was almost going to go back and play
junior for another year, and you know, we had him
on a visit and it went great and kind of
saw the benefits of being here.
Speaker 2 (05:52):
So you put that on top of you.
Speaker 3 (05:53):
Know, the huge transition that he goes through to join
our group and enroll in college and you know, be
a putter part of our team. You know, I think
what he's does really well is he skates really well. Sure,
and you know his speed one defensively, you know, he
takes away time and space too offensively and it's on
a stick. He does a great job driving. You know,
he's had chances, he's had looks and clarkson He's steaming
(06:16):
down on an open net and gets all down by
four guys and it doesn't go in right, but he
just stuck. He's stuck with it. And you know, I
think with all the specifically, you know, he's coming from
a leadership position. You know, he's got a lot of character,
and you know, I think that that you know, when
things are new or you're adjusting, if you've kind of
got that solid base, which he has, you know, the
(06:38):
transition becomes a little bit smoother. And he's done a
tremendous job for our group, and he's played some big
minutes for.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Us and some big situations and we talk, you know,
obviously the transition on the ice, what are you seeing
from these guys off the ice as they transition, It's
a whole other animal. So it's a new lenge for
these guys really coming to college.
Speaker 3 (06:54):
Well, yeah, you know this was new to me too,
and you know, being around the guys so personally I
could even speak to it where you know, the group
of guys that we have are so welcoming. They're such
tremendous kids and such tremendous people. That's something I felt
coming in as the new guy, you know, over the summer,
(07:16):
and you know, I think with the players that goes
to another level. They spend all the time around each other.
You know, they're you know, spending time out of the
rink together and just seeing how our guys operate in
kind of the character that we have.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
In that room.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
It's no surprise that they've come together as quickly and
as closely as they have.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
So now we look ahead now this weekend to Omaha
coming off of a sweep out of Colorado College, a
couple of splits in their young season as well. What
are you seeing from the Mavericks. They're another group that's
gone through all kinds of changes offseason, like everyone has
in their game.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
Yeah, a lot of new faces there.
Speaker 3 (07:50):
Goaltender is playing extremely well, you know, so I think
it's gonna be another great challenge for us. We know
that every NCHD game is going to be tight, it's
going to be contested. Then the other team is going
to be playing at a high level, and you know,
I think that's what we're expecting heading in. You know,
for us, it's time to put the pedal to the metal,
you know, stay on the gas and not have a
(08:12):
dep But just you know, I think that's something that
we are in control of in regards to our effort
and our output and our compete, and when we take
care of those things, you know, you know, it usually
ends up pretty well for us.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
What are the differences now? Obviously, Center and night, great
performance at home. What do you have to change, what
do you have to tweak now going on the road
to play series.
Speaker 3 (08:30):
Well, hopefully the eight hour bus ride helps, you know
a little more team bonding together. But no, I you know,
I think going to Clarkson was a great experience for
us in regards to getting a taste of being on
the road. So it's not something that we're walking into
kind of wide eyed. But I, you know, I do
think the NCCHD games last week and are also a
taste of what's coming. So one, we're more prepared for
(08:51):
being on the road. Two were more prepared for the
NCCHD competition and knowing that these points are extremely valuable
and for us, you know, with our big, bigger term goals,
you know, every game becomes that much more important.
Speaker 1 (09:03):
Yeah. We always say in this league, you don't win
anything in October November, but you can certainly get behind
a pretty big eight ball, and obviously getting that extra
point last weekend a series win is huge.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Yeah, pig time, it's uh, you know, you're never looking
too far ahead. We talk about our goals at the
beginning of the season, you know, and from that point forward,
it's you know, more of a micro focus on what's
right in front of us. But you know, I think,
like you said, every point becomes extremely important and you know,
without looking ahead, Yeah, we still have to be laser
focused on where we're at and what's important, what's right
(09:35):
in front of us.
Speaker 1 (09:35):
So our month in obviously, I know you guys are
your hockey fiends. You're you're seeing everything. What's what's stood
out to you just across the board Collin s hockey
the first month, other than some of the bizarre results
per se.
Speaker 3 (09:47):
You know, I think the uh propensity for split like
everyone is dangerous. Like you look at the scoreboard over
the last couple of weekends. You know, the teams at
the top are splitting almost every weekend. Teams at bottom
are just as competitive. You know, the margin for air
is so small, The teams are so good, the player
pool is so good. You know that there there are
(10:09):
no off nights. It doesn't matter who's stepping on the ice.
And you know, I think that's that's great. You you
have to be sharp all the time, and you know,
I just think the level is so good just watching
you know, over the first few weekends, you know how
fast the teams are, how tight checking they are. You know,
it's it's great hockey. Holy smokes, just watching it. It's awesome.
(10:32):
You know, every game is you know, it feels tight.
You know, as a coach, you.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
Know, it used to be you'd have to wait for
Christmas to kind of get that feel a little bit,
you know, everybody was kind of But now it's just
everything is so magnified across the board and it is great.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
It's it's a blast, like it really is. It's uh,
there are.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
No low stress moments at all out there, which is
which is kind of fun. So outside of you personally
seeing a big sign that says, Omaha, next exit, what
else you're looking forward to this weekend you're taking on
the Mavericks. Now, I think just getting on the road
is awesome. You know, teams and coaches they talk about
going on the road and then how it brings it
closer together. You spend all the time, you know together
(11:10):
on the bus and you're going out for team meals
and you're at the hotel. It's hockey centered and hockey
focused and you get to do that as a group.
So it's really fun, you know. They think the other
part is you're going into kind of the lions. Then
you know you're going into enemy territory. You're the villain.
Your backs are kind of up against the wall, and
you know that's that's really fun.
Speaker 1 (11:29):
So and it seems it seems, for whatever reason down there,
there's a little more villainous with North Dakota. I don't
I don't know if it's a mutual. If it's a
mutual you know, case of despising one another, but I
feel like this group might feed into that. You certainly
hope come Friday night, when they're public enemy number one,
I expect nothing less from this group. I know, I
(11:51):
know how they roll. Yeah, perfect, of course you do.
You spend a lot of time with them. Well, s Maabes,
appreciate the time tonight, get home, get the laundry done.
We'll see you in the morning as we jump in
old Iron Lung and make our weight on nine to
twenty nine.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
Can't wait.
Speaker 1 (12:03):
