Speaker 1 (00:03):
Welcome back to the five h six Club Downtown Grand
Porks as I'm Paul Ralston here Hawk Talk segment two
with you and d Hockey head coach Dane Jackson joining
us now. And by the way, when you switch, yeah,
thank you.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
That's right.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
Hey, since I've been gone, I don't know if we've
given Mel enough credit. She comes in the sweater, the
Christmas festive sweater. She runs this place. She's a superstar.
We love Mel. Happy holidays, Merry Christmas to you. And
by the way, swing on in. If you've never had
the loaded nachos here, highly recommend it, take advantage of that.
I know some of our fans have already been in
(00:37):
and ordering things like a Panini earlier tonight, So take
advantage of the great eats to go along with your
beverages as well. And Coach Jackson, when you look at
New Turning and getting the guys through the finals week
and getting them to their destinations to for a few
days basically, and there's that fine line of how long
do we let them be home for and we got
(00:58):
to get them back getting ready for the next opponent
on the list. But there comes a time where the
break is beneficial for everyone involved, and a little refresh
never hurts, and and so you got to look forward
to that for the guys to have a even if
it's a few days at home with friends and family,
to enjoy the holiday.
Speaker 3 (01:17):
Yeah, I think our season is the longest in all
the college sports sports. I think we're you know, we're
obviously get going April or excuse me, August first, and
we go into April. So it's a long one. So yeah,
it's a nice break. We get a nice holiday. You know,
the guys do exams this week and they'll go home
for a full week and then we'll get back and
have lots time to prepare for mercy here. So it's
a it's a really good time to kind of guys
to reset and for us to kind of do a
(01:38):
deeper viot dive and some of the video on our
systems and and look at things about how we can improve.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
You know, you've got a great equipment guy, Dan's down there.
Does anybody sharpen their own skates anymore? Or is it
all just hand them off to the equipment guy?
Speaker 2 (01:52):
Just hand them off. I don't know if who's a
last gay. I don't know if that was Eddie bellfor
or who was the last guy to do that? But no,
Dan does it all, and uh, we're thankful we have him.
Speaker 1 (02:02):
I was gonna say, so, it's not like you run
in there with your old skates and and give him
a quick sharpen yourself. You don't turn on the machine
anymore or anything like that.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
So too high tech. I think. I don't know if
Daniel let us in there, okayt mess around with his stuff.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
Here's another fun question. Somebody asked us, said, you know,
out of out of all you coaches, obviously you can
still get up and down the rink a little bit,
who's still got the most game?
Speaker 2 (02:25):
They don't.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
It just seems like they haven't even missed a beat
since the other their college days or whatever. When you
step out on the ice with the guys who can
still move and skate and and shoot and score with
with out of the coaching staff, who's that.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Yeah, that's for sure. Dylan Dylan, Well, I think something
to do with our ages. He's he's still thirty two,
I think, so he still got it. He still jumps
in the drills sometimes and we're short of d and uh,
he looks pretty sharp back there.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
You still got it.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
He's still he's still got has it, has it and
uh probably has a wry smile on his face knowing
that he still has it.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Probably, Yeah, he's got the flow there. It kind of
looks like you La fleur flying around out there.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
So yeah, he still looks good when you look at basically,
you know, the finals and putting everything together. You said
you had to have a few practices here, do you
Is it a lot of skill work?
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Is it?
Speaker 1 (03:15):
Is it a little bit of getting them up and
down and do it, breaking into some teams and playing
a little bit and just getting the bodies moving. What
happens on a week like this where you have a
shortened schedule and there's no game that you're preparing for
at the end of the week.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Yeah, there's no teaching this week. It's just kind of
getting the legs and the lungs going.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
They're just okay.
Speaker 3 (03:34):
Today we had some they were playing some games some
uh you know, three on three and stuff. So yeah,
we're not trying to get any teaching or just give
them a break mentally, but we just want to keep
them moving, just keep the hands going and keep their
you know, their conditioning going.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Well, and then you talked a little bit about you
and your staff. That doesn't mean that, you know, you'll
have a holiday window, but you'll also maybe keep busy
trying to watch a few things here as well, whether
it be World Juniors or maybe going to pick up
a tournament or something, so basically on the road basically
could be possible for for everybody involved within your staff.
Speaker 3 (04:06):
Yeah, we'll still do some recruiting, We'll watch some World Juniors,
We'll watch some other tournaments and games the Western Hockey
League and uh, it gets going kind of right after Christmas,
so yeah, we'll still get out and try to you know,
get some practices in with our guys. But we'll be
it's a good, good little window for us to get
out and watch games and some of our some new
recruits and also just some of our existing players to
kind of you know, we watch a lot of video
(04:27):
along the way as well. Obviously brings out a ton watching. Yeah,
and it'll get that chance for Matt's maybe and Dylan
Simpson myself to get out there and see guys live.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
I was gonna say we brought Brynn on the show
not too long ago. I heard that conversation with Darren
Luker wherever I was at, I was listing in. But
sometimes he's kind of the guy off in the the ether.
You probably talked to him more via phone probably than
you do see him face to face at times.
Speaker 3 (04:51):
Yeah, he was hanging around this weekend and we were
joking as a staff that he was maybe we have
too much brin time or something. He's a bit like
uh oh goodness, like Billy being there and Moneyball, So
sure he gets a little nervous, and he doesn't like
watching games live anyways. He thinks he's bad luck, so
he's easily doing something kind of half watching. But no,
we're lucky to have him. He grinds ha already, puts
(05:12):
a lot of days on the road and knows all
the player pool really well, builds a lot of relationships
with people out in the road so that we get
calls and know about what's going on out there.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
So he's invaluable and he's exceptional at his job.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
Last couple of things for you, I know the further
we you know, I'm gonna be fifty next year myself,
but I still have a few gifts that I remember
as a kid. You remember first of all as a
kid for you growing up, were you in British Columbia
probably for a period.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Of time, yeap, some in PC someone Alberta.
Speaker 1 (05:44):
Yeah, So do you remember at some point you just
had one gift that You're like, man, that was a
lot of fun. I was just so happy when I
got it. Is there one that that? And then as
a parent, is there one that where the kids just
were like, this is the best thing ever?
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Yeah? For sure, I remember exactly. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
I was about eleven, I think, and my dad worked
at a college socer college, and they had a middle
working shop and they got they made me like a
legit big net for o back because you'd get those small,
o ye rocky nets, not shoot a million pucks and
it would blow it apart. But this was the big
cast iron and everything.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
It wasn't going anywhere.
Speaker 3 (06:18):
No, it was legit, and I would I loved it.
I'd love shooting bucks in the backyard. So that was my,
by far and away, the best gift.
Speaker 1 (06:24):
And it got the most use.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
It got a lot of use, and that things still
hung together.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
Remember when I was done playing college, even I'd come
home shooting the summer and then we passed it out
of the neighbor kid and nothing hung around for a
lot of years up in Highland Drive.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
Is there any time were you and your your your
better half of you know, gave something to the kids
and you just said, you know what, I'm so glad
we did, you know, I mean, did they look underneath
the tree? I mean that probably happens all the time. No,
when they were kids.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Yeah, I don't know. I guess uh, yeah, I think probably.
You know.
Speaker 3 (06:55):
The thing that they were probably most happy that we
would do for quite a few years when we built
a rink. You know, we all hostile the k in
our backyard. Yeah, my wife's dad, Ralf, would helped me
a lot.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
I had a rink built for me in my farm
outside of town. Here was the greatest thing ever.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
Yeah. We put a lot of a lot of time
in on that thing.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
It takes a lot of maintenance and a lot of
work to keep it up, but it's kind of fun
and the kids.
Speaker 2 (07:14):
Absolutely just love it. You know. All Lila, Dallas and
Dylan all used a lot with their friends.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
The best gifts center around hockey. Well, we appreciate you
dropping by here as you head to the holiday break.
We know It's been a journey and we know that
there's so much more of the journey to go. Appreciate
this time here tonight and good luck the rest.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
Of the way. Yeah, thanks, Paul, I appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (07:33):
