of North Dakota Athletics, and we are going to have
a great show here for you tonight. We're going to
talk a little hockey, and yes it's the season of
basketball as well, and so that's and we might even
slip in some softball talk, believe it or not, because
we're only I don't know a month away from opening camp.
So to speak for U and D softball a spur
(00:58):
of the moment add to our program as well. So
glad to have you with us. And of course North
to Go To Hockey now finds itself as they turn
the corner to the holiday break on top of the
NCCHC standings. Everybody, that's awesome. Fantastic Head coach Dane Jackson
joins the program now and coach, congratulations to you and
your team. A lot of hard work on the front
(01:19):
end here. Long ways to go. But you know, let's
talk a little about the last weekend here against Omaha
a little bit, taking two in a series. Never easy
to get that many wins against the same opponent in
one season. Guys play with too much pride in this league,
you know it. And you had to really quon fight
for for every inch of ice in those two games
(01:39):
here in Grand Forks Friday and Saturday night.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Yeah, for sure, we respect those guys.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
They always have real competitive team, not easy to score,
you know, especially we thought we might get a little
bit of a break their top goalie Lacozi went down there.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
But they they checked and battled all the.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Weekend, and yeah, we were There's no easy games in our league,
So you're just you know, we don't really mind if
we win by one or win by three. We're just
happy to get the win. So proud of how the
guys kind of were resilient and stayed together. Got a
little bit of penalty trouble there on Saturday night, but
overall a really positive we.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Can Yeah, you know, and I all say this about anybody,
whether it's in basketball, football, any sport that I'm able
to follow and cheer for here along the way, because
I just know student athletes are student athletes, no matter
what team they're playing for. When I saw a Cozy
go down, I just felt terrible because such a great player.
He's been really good in this league for a long time.
(02:32):
But also that was the opportunity for your squad to
maybe get at that new goaltender who steps in a
little early, and you got to take advantage. And I
thought you came right out and got after that goaltender
a little bit in the opening moments of that in
that transition.
Speaker 3 (02:45):
Yeah, for sure, you don't like to ever see anybody
get hurt, But obviously when any of guy goes in,
that's a kind of mentally jarring for him and their team.
So I thought we did a good job of kind
of forcing the play and getting a couple on them
when they were just kind of getting reset. I think
so that was a good job by our guys to
kind of, you know, play on our toes and kind
of push the pace a little bit there at the
(03:05):
start of that game on Friday.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
The the thing on Friday's game, h you know, if
you stayed to the end like I did, you're you're
watching kind of things. And this is where tempers and
familiarity with everybody playing each other over and over again.
It seems like in a short apperiod amount of time
and things have happened in that game, you know. I
said on on Monday morning to Tim Hennessy, who was
(03:28):
on the call, I said, you know, I don't know,
if I'm in Strathman skates, I probably react the same
way because I was just standing there. I don't really
I can't really blame the young man for kind of
having the meter goal past a past one hundred because
they're hot, yeah, over hot.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Because if that happened to me.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
And I was just standing there, he he just he
took a full shot and there and there he didn't
even have the buck.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Yeah, yeah, I didn't, and you kind of apologize after
I said, hey, no apology is necessary. He was obviously
you know that it was a you know, it wasn't
a hockey player that you didn't have it, and he
got he got nailed, and then you know, emotions kind
of happened. Everybody was jumping in there to kind of
protect him. So, yeah, I didn't, I didn't have any
ill will for Andrew.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
You know, I don't know. I was still a little
bit surprised they called it a fight.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
You know, it didn't seem like it was a It
was a little bit of a wrestling match, but uh, yeah,
those things happen, and you kind of I liked how
the guys stuck together there, so that was, uh, that
was fine. And then uh yeah, we just kind of
I don't know, if it makes you kinda get ready
for Saturday and get refocused and uh you don't want
to try to sweep the at home.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
Well, and you you know, you already came into the
weekend where you knew that there were some guys coming
back into the lineup. Thankfully, just the timing of everything,
some guys moving on because they had to get to
the World Junior Camps from Canada. You're Canadian players that
were making that move in very often, and Reshni. But
at the same time, then Strathman, who's been very solid,
(04:49):
reliable player for you now having to to step out
and miss. So yet again you're trying to to get
all the pieces going into game two. And and then
you also decided, and we talked about the this morning,
but it we'll let people if they haven't had a
chance to catch that. That visit is that as a staff,
you look around and you say, hey, Ghippy's been doing
the right things. He's been a good teammates, He's got
(05:09):
the right frame of work here over the last several weeks.
I had somebody stop me in the grocery store the
other morning and said, what did you think about that?
I'm like, well, it's still early in the season, so
I guess tell us a little bit about how that
developed from Friday to Saturday and maybe the week leading
up to it.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
Yeah, on the goaltender change, I was even getting getting
crap in my own household, my wife, my wife and
kids there.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
What are you doing? No, we.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
I guess, Pat said earlier. Gibson Homer has played well
when he's been in net. His stats aren't quite as
as good. Yan has been outstanding, but yeah, we just
have seen the way he's handled things. He's he's been
out for quite a while. He's practiced extremely well. He's
very professional, he's sharp, he works. He instills confidence in
his teammates and coaches by how he kind of handles
(05:55):
himself and how he's practiced when he's been out. And
we kind of had out on the dock as a staff.
We kind of talked about that for even kind of
like previous weekend about as we can look ahead trying
to get when we wanted to play Gibson, and you know,
we felt confident that they could do the job.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
You know, it wasn't like.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
We we thought it was gonna be easy game. We
knew it wouldn't be. We just felt strongly that he
could do the job. And you know, to me, it's
kind of like buying insurance. You know, if you if
you just play you on all the time and then
you know, he gets sick or he gets hurt or
whatever and Gibbson is not ready to go, then that's
not a great spot to be. You know, we felt
that we could have a real strong performance from our
group and then he could go in and play well
and get the win. And now we're going into the
(06:31):
break with two guys that feel good about themselves and
our team is confident in So it's one of those
things where you kind of try to do. You want
to win every game, absolutely, but again we're building for
March and April, and you're trying to get guys in
there and develop your group and build that camaraderie and
have everybody you know contributing, playing well and kind of
building their roles.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Well, I'm not going to say that, you know, you
take every idea that everybody else does around the country,
but somebody from our league last year went on to
win the national type and for most of the year
they were alternating goaltenders. Western Michigan did that. Finally at
the end of the season they said, you're the little
You're a little bit hotter than the next guy, so
you're going to carry us the rest of the way through.
(07:11):
But it paid off for them to have two goaltenders
through much of the season last year for Western Michigan.
Speaker 3 (07:15):
Yeah, absolutely know, Hampton Sleukinski was you know, stepped up
and was the guy for him down the stretch. But
they did alternate a lot, and it's, uh, you know,
everybody's a little bit different. Like we've generally at North Dakota,
I think kind of played, uh, you know, two goalies
and let them kind of establish themselves and try to
you know, battle it out a little bit, and then
once you get to the second half, you kind of
if one guy has kind of taken the lead a
(07:37):
little bit, We've generally have gone with one guy down
the stretch.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
So we'll see how it goes.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
You know, if you feel confident two guys, that's great,
but you know, let's kind of take it weekend by weekend.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
You look at a guy like mcgheey BENGHINEI I should
say he you know, maybe he's been a little snake
bit at times, but made a wonderful play over the
weekend getting a goal. I just thought, well, boy, does
that just to take a little bit of the the
weight off his shoulders just a little bit, because he's
had a lot of chances that you think, man, he's
almost a little hard done not to score.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Yeah, and he we know he could score. He scored
twelve last year in Duluth.
Speaker 3 (08:12):
He's got an excellent shot, he can really skate and
that goal scoring is funny. It's a little bit of
a confidence thing. And uh, he's just been fighting a
little bit, but he's been working and playing well, so
he's uh, you know, he's been on a lower line,
but we've been trusting him. He's been you know, he's
consistently physical. He covers a lot of ice, defends well
and stuff. So we've been happy with him and just
(08:33):
felt really good for him to get a big goal
for us.
Speaker 1 (08:35):
Well, you moved and shuffled pieces around. You got maybe
some guys that don't always play in short handed situations
of some opportunities because of some guys that were out
of the lineup. You had some guys playing the power
play that maybe got a few more shifts than they
typically do and giving you even more ideas for the specialist.
Basically as you move into the second half of the season.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Yeah, and that's kind of a nice thing sometimes, you know,
you you know, I've see it. It hurts losing resting Beverhoft
to Team Canada camp. They left earlier. America guys left
after the weekend, which was nice. Zellers and memory. But yeah,
you know, you just gotta adapt, you gotta have that
next man up mentality, and some guys get some different
chances and different roles. And you know, Ben's trend and
playing on the flank really showed that, you know, we
(09:18):
knew a shot was really good, but he was exceptional
kind of one time in Puck's there in.
Speaker 2 (09:22):
A scoring threat. And yeah, it's just it's good to
just as you go through to.
Speaker 3 (09:26):
Kind of go through these you know, whatever potential you
want to call it, adversities or different lineup changes, and
you'll see different guys get a different opportunities and it's
good to kind of build your book and knowledge for
guys down the stretch.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
Let's talk a little bit about Jan Spoonar, who you
mentioned has the longest trip home for Christmas. He will
go back overseas for a brief chance to see family
and friends. Named the NCCHC Rookie of the Week and
obviously has been just such a wonderful addition to this
program and he settled in and not gotten too big
for the moment. He just attacks every every game that
(10:00):
he plays and tell us a little bit about his
makeup and and kind of how he handles himself on
a on a day to day basis to be the
player that he is.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
Yeah, he's been obviously outstanding. Anytime your name gets brought
up in the same record category as at Bellefort and
then he's a Hall of Famer for us, that's pretty awesome. Yeah,
he's been He's been just so solid for us. His
mentality is, uh, he's a pretty laid back guy.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
You know. Sometimes goalies are interesting.
Speaker 3 (10:29):
Yeah, they're all different. I was watching them in their
morning skate a little bit on one morning. They were
doing some different drills and Jan was not stopping very
many pucks and he had some kind of quote about.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Yeah, coach, sometimes the pucks they just don't hit me.
And I was like, oh, I didn't.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
That's not something that you really want to hear. But uh,
he's uh, you know, in the game time, he's a gamer.
He tracks pucks really well and and he battles. He's
calm in there, and he just gives us a chance
to win every night he goes in there. So he've
been just unbelievably pleased with on and he's been you know,
it's a huge for our team.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
The one thing that you tend to hit on in
your interviews post game, whether they be with the regular
meeting with their regular media press conferences, or your postgame
radio interviews. You talk a lot about the room just
having the right feel right now, and there's something to
be said about maybe no nobody can ever put a
(11:24):
finger on it, but you kind of know when you
have it right and and that's that's a good feeling
to have so far in this season with this team.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
Yeah, it's not how you start, it's how you finished.
But we definitely have a good group of you know, teammates.
We've talked about that's one of our kind of core
pillars of our culture is having guys that are sell us, that.
Speaker 2 (11:39):
Are good teammates.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
And you know, early on we had no injuries, and
there are some really good players sitting out, so it's
not easy to be uh, you know, great teammate. Guys
are you know, don't want to play, want to be
out there. But we had guys that just kind of
you know, bided their time and they were prepared so
when their opportunity came, they they had success.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
So, uh yeah, good bunch of guys. That's how we
built our team.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
We put a large emphasis sun finding character guys and
guys that are two hundred foot good, two hundred pet
good players that kind of defend, you know, care to defend,
and also can score. So yeah, we've been happy with
that start that we've had and just you know, but again,
you never want to you never get complacement, and you
just keep building and keep working and you got to
we have to keep improving. We have to get better
to if we want to kind of buy for a
(12:19):
national championship. We know that, and guys kind of have
that growth mindset, So that's a that's a positive.
Speaker 1 (12:24):
