Speaker 1 (00:03):
And that's a good reminder coming up here for that
Mercy Hers series for you and D Hockey, it is
Ticketmasters slash you and D Coke and you'll be able
to get You won't need a promo code or anything.
You get fifteen dollars plus fees tickets for that series
on that weekend in the Upper Bowl, So take advantage
(00:23):
of that. Of course, there's basketball to be had, so
you need to get your tickets to head out to
the Betty Tomorrow night for women's basketball, Thursday night for
men's basketball. Head coach Paul Say. There's been our guest
here on Hawk Talk, and neither he or I have
been around these parts very much here in the last
month and a half. But you know you turn your attention.
You already touched on Winthrop, a team that always thinks
(00:45):
they have a route to the NCAA Tournament in the
Big South, and to be honest with you, their track
record is just that. Coach, they are a successful program
and they continue to push the envelope down there for
pathways to the dance. You're bringing in a team out
of South Carolina that is not afraid to take on
anyone all comers.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Eleven transfers seven this year, four last year, So is
that what it is for the guys they have back
that are playing or transfers and then they've got seven
they got seven more in so just yeah, I mean
it's definitely, uh, you know, they've kind of found their
niche and in today's world of the portal. Yeah, and
they've had really good success.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
With They played Coastal Carolina really well. They fell in
that game, yeah, they.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Did, and they did that at home. That was Costal
went into Winthrop and beat them, So you know, they
just yeah, it's it's a it's gonna be an awesome game.
I just I just think it's such a good opportunity
for us when you when you play against the team
that does some of the things they do. They haven't
you know, in the film I've watched, and what you know,
(01:47):
talking with this is coach Stephen Scout, they haven't played
against the team that's been trapping a much. So they've
had a lot of freedom coming up ball screens, you
know a lot of drop coverage or different things like that.
They haven't seen the trapping as much. So you know,
you know, I'm gonna be interested to see how that
how they handle that, and then we've got to do
a great job and our rotations and get into their threes.
(02:08):
And then when the shot goes up, and we put
a video up today like literally listed it as when
the shot goes up, it's when the game starts, like
when they put their threes. When they put their threes
up and they take a lot of them, that's gonna
be every we have to win the game. We got
to you know, get a great contest, but we've got
to we gotta not we got to really limit a team.
(02:29):
I think their last four games, they've been right around
nineteen offensive boards a game. Two of those games were
against kind of poured nondividual.
Speaker 1 (02:36):
One nine division ones yep.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
But but they and they weren't great no individuals. I
mean sometimes you play like this Dakota State team were
coming playing after Christmas. Correct, they're ten to one or
maybe twelve and one whatever.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
They now, they really were hard done that.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
And they and they they almost beat Brookings in the
South Dakota State and Brookings just a six point game.
So like we got a really tough game after Christmas
in Dakota State. But this Winter team and then Nebraska
going to get to the Nebraska.
Speaker 1 (03:00):
Yeah, we're going down a Pinnacle Bank.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Yeah. Man, they're good.
Speaker 1 (03:04):
Yeah, you know, we're we're getting a night game on
a Sunday night, so we're going to be the focal point.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
And you know why it was set on Sunday night, right.
Speaker 1 (03:10):
Well, I'm not gonna I'm not rubbing anything into you know,
people are hurts.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
Kelsey a little bit. Yes happened, but I mean they
had the Sunday night game set up because of the
volleyball team you had to anticipate on Sunday afternoon in
Kansas City. Yeah, and Nebraska quite happened the way they
thought maybe that.
Speaker 1 (03:28):
Was it true didn't. But Nebraska's men's team this year
man really really good. They're off to a fantastic start.
I mean they are, and they're just awesome.
Speaker 2 (03:37):
And it's probably by far his maybe in the last
few years, his least athletic team, right really, I think
they're a team man that really likes. You know, Coach
Mack played them and they beat Creton pretty good. They did.
And you know one thing Greg said about it was
in his press conference, was those guys know who they
(03:58):
are and they're all willing to go out and make
winning plays. It's about winning. Like they just want to win.
They're gonna do whatever they have to do to win.
It isn't about any kind of personal agenda and get
mine and this and that like that. They're really they're connected,
they're engaged, and they're playing the way that they really
are showing that on the floor. And I mean they
(04:19):
they beat a pretty good Illinois team. I think they
hammered a good Wisconsin team by thirty. And we got
the boys coming up after a week off, so I mean,
it's let's go. Let's go play them. These are the
games that I mean, you leave it out there. What
do you got to lose? Go out there and and
and and and let it hang out. Man, go play
really really hard and leave everything you got on the
(04:40):
floor and see what happens.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
And and with Creighton when they lost by twenty one
to them, said they know who they are. They buy
into it, they play to it, and they just play
their tails off to it. Can Can North Dakota be
that team the second half of the season.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
That's what you're that's what you're going all this, This
is what you're going through it for. But like they're
the part of that is really understanding. Okay, this is
what you want me to do, and this is what
I've got to really engage in and do really well,
and then buy into that and then continue to do
that every single day and make that part of it
really important. And that's what we're gonna keep working on.
(05:17):
Are we there? We're not. We're obviously not there right now.
Can we get there? Absolutely we can't. But it's it's
it's you know that that path, it's it's a it's
that path. Are really kind of giving up and worrying
about missing and making shots and more worried about making
the right play and making the hustle play and making
the fifty you know, we need to get more fifty
to fifty. I mean, some of these things that we're
(05:38):
not doing well enough a lot have to do with
having your mind in the right place and worrying about
the right things a lot more often. Sure, And that's
that's what we're grinding on right now. And that's when
you when you put a new group together with some
guys that are back, and that's sometimes it messages a
little bit easier. Sometimes it takes a little bit more time,
and you know, we're we're we're grinding on it. Then
(06:01):
we're gonna keep grinding on.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
The soup pot is on the stoves, and and and
everything has been blended in there. But we gotta let
it simmer a while. It comes comes to be what
it is. So there we go. You are gonna let
the guys break out after that game against Nebraska. Some
will be driven to the airport, some will just leave
with families. When will they return and then get ready
(06:22):
for that Dakota States.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
They get they get about what four days.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
I was gonna say, and one of them is going
to be traveling.
Speaker 2 (06:28):
Yeah. Yeah, it's Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Thursday's Christmas back
on Friday, okay, and we're practicing Friday because because you
gotta play Sundays, you're playing on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (06:39):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (06:39):
Then we and then we open up with our Roberts
in South Dakota State. Well, let's have a great week here,
you know it just yeah, it leads. This all leads
up the conference plane at the end of the day.
That's that's what we're doing this for right now, is
to put ourselves in a position where conference play. We're
hopefully getting to that point where we're playing at a
level that's just more consistent on all sides of the floor.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
Appreciate this and let's have a great one this week.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Thanks.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
All right, there's head coach Paul saythor You indie men's
basketball gonna be a great challenge Thursday. Winthrop is that's
not Winthorpe from trading places, by the way, It's not Winthorpe.
It's Winthrop.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
They are.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
Really talented team and they've already pushed Nebraska and pushed Arkansas.
They're coming in Thursday night to the Betty and so
hopefully you'll come on in and cheer on North Dakota
in a big opportunity there, and of course a big
one to close out the the pre pre Christmas campaign
against Nebraska coming up Sunday evening down in Lincoln at
(07:40):
Pinnacle Bank Arena, which is a fabulous, fabulous venue. You
Indie hockey, of course, have made the turn for home.
They still will be practicing this week, but don't have
any action coming your way this weekend, and we wish
them safe travels to their holiday break as well. You
indie women's basketball, they're back in action coming up tomorrow
night against Mayviell State. Make sure you make your way
(08:01):
out to the Betty for that as Coach Hutter and
his team take the floor at seven against the Comets
