Speaker 1 (00:03):
We continue Tuesday night Honk Talk Live and signed to
five oh six pub Hugo's Peer Market downtown grand Port.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
So our thanks Derek Schmidt.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
For stopping my big week for North to Go to
football course signing to a tomorrow, so keep an eyefighting
Hawks dot com and all the local media for reports
on that. And then of course North to put the
football at Tarleton State coming up on Saturday in the
second round of the FCS playoffs. So best of luck
to him as we shift gears and talk a little hockey.

(00:31):
We welcome in North to Go to head hockey coach
Dane Jackson. Jacks thanks for stopping down on your Tuesday night.

Speaker 2 (00:37):
Yeah, thanks for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:37):
Great to have you as always. Well, go back to
last week and something that had been maybe be a
little tougher to come by than most of recent that's
a sweep of the Bamigi State Beavers. So congratulations on that,
and we'll start there. Go back to Friday, obviously over
the Sandford Center in Bamigi and it just to me
it was just a frustratingly exciting hockey game then ended

(00:59):
up five through back and forth, I mean, and you know,
North to Go to you guys playing so well, a
lot of stretches of of that hockey game and really
had nothing to show for it other then at times
a one goal lead. But again, you guys stuck with
it back and forth it went getting empty and enter
in a great performance Friday night in the series opener.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Yeah, you know, you looked up and it was three
to three near the end at the end of the
second kind of and you're like, I thought, we deserve better. Yeah,
but that's how it goes sometimes. You know, we'd made
uh you know, and they made a couple of plays
and we you know, we had a couple of breakdowns,
but overall I thought we'd you know, played well, you know,
we were kind of carrying the play and tilting the
ice and uh so you just kind of say, he

(01:38):
just stick with the boys, keep doing the right thing,
and uh, you know, our power play was good, So
that was big. When we got some chance in the
power play we converteds. That was really good to see.
And yeah, overall just kind of did come our way,
which was good to see. And then the boys that
you know, played a good hard third period and just
kind of played the right way. We didn't sit back
but just managed the puck well and did give him
a ton so nice to get an empty nther right

(01:59):
at the very very end. But it was it was
a really good performance in their rank, and was happy
with all the guys showed up in a tough barn.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
And then he come back Saturday nights and it was
just like watching two guys play checkers, and nobody was
going to make a move out of the back role
because it was just just a ground and pound two
to one game like we've come to expect with these
two teams. And but there again your guys stuck with
it and find a way in overtime.

Speaker 2 (02:18):
Yeah, I thought they had the better start than us.
They were a little more urgent. I think we're winning
some more races and one on one battles. Spooner was
really good for us and held us in, and I
thought they had some good chances, but like you say,
we kind of settled in and started playing better and
kind of creating a few more chances ourselves, and and uh,
you know, yeah, it was tough, like they were. They
play a tough style, you know. They just we talked

(02:39):
about that last last peak. Wine are here just about them,
you know, they advanced pucks and just gonna chip out
and chip in a little bit. But they do a
great job and they play that system well. And uh,
we had some good patients I thought, and you know,
created some good chances and Spoons was so solid for uced.
Gave our guys a lot of confidence, I think, and.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
You talk about the process every night we get a
chance to visit, and to me, it was full display
this past weekend because it happened two different ways, it seemed,
but you guys really had to go sixty sixty plus
Saturday night, but just that belief and kind of commitment
to it really was on display.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
I thought, Yeah, you know, we've done a good job
of kind of playing the right way over over long stretches,
and yeah, overall, I just thought we competed in battle.
It was a good opponent. And sometimes you can get,
like you say, get a little frustrated when you don't
convert in your chances or or you know, you let
up a couple of times, like with the goal they
did score. We talked a lot about it after Friday.

(03:31):
They do a really good job and there's own zone
just fir and pucks out, guys just kating on to
it and if you take just a moment of a
false step or looking the wrong way over your shoulder,
guy can beat yet ice and they get those two
on one chances, and that's what they did score again
on us. But you know, you just say, hey, boys,
you know, we just make sure we don't let it
happen again. Make sure our top four is really supporting
our D and D are getting off the line if
they're doing those plays. And you know, overall, the guys

(03:54):
sort of a lot of commitment to kind of playing
a strong, solid whatever.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
It was, sixty sixty sixty sixty one, and he mentioned, okay,
so now you've said that, you've said Spoonnar about three times.
Now let's talk about him first time going back to
back in his college career. And it was almost uncharacteristic
Friday night, just in the fact that he gave up three,
which is something that's strange in his world right, But
the guys responded and scored for him. And then Saturday
night just an outstanding performance to really keep you in

(04:21):
that one as you've phoned a way to grind it out.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
Yeah, yeah, he was good at thought Friday night. He
probably has one that he wants to get back. You know,
he kind of said that to us, but you know
that's kind of the nice thing he has, that humility,
and the guys are playing hard for him. And then yeah,
he was just he made a bunch of plus saves
on Saturday night, which you know, they probably should have
scored a couple or a few maybe on Saturday and
just got the one. So he was Uh, I think

(04:45):
he was the you know, the star of the game
for us. And uh, we're just we're really happy to
see him being able to come in and not easy
as a as a freshman to come in and uh
play that well, but an outstanding start and uh, you know,
we have good belief in Gibbe Homer as well, and
it's nice to have a couple of guys that are
reliable back there. Good problem, Yeah for sure.

Speaker 1 (05:04):
Now we look ahead Saint Cloud State on the big Ice,
a chance maybe at a complete one to eighty of
what we saw on last weekend. What do we know
about the Huskies?

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Oh yeah, their power play is one of the best
in the country. They're running i think around thirty one percent.
So we got to be a real discipline crew. It's
always hard to kill penalties in that rink. I think
with the bigger ice surface, you got to be a
little more discipline and and you know we've we've killed
really aggressively this year, and I think when there's next
little bit of time and space out there for those guys,
got to be a little bit more discerning and when

(05:32):
you're going to try to go and force. But so
that'll be important. Yeah, I just think we've played pretty
well down there of late. They you know they in
that big ice, they transitioned the puck well, uh, they
got some good guys that can make plays off the rush.
Their top line is good. But again we'll focus on
just trying to play our best game. We went up
top on the Olympic ice today, so we're kind of
getting used to the field of the big the big rinks.

(05:55):
So we're working on some of our diesel and working
on some you know, defensive plays just a little bit
different for d man, you know, holding lines and moving
out to guys. You just gotta sometimes you got to
play really strong inside the dots and those big rinks
and not you know, close a little bit more under
control because you know, if they're playing on the outside
sometimes that's okay. You just got to make sure that
you do a good job tight in front.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
Of your head, and that kind of is the biggest adjustment, right,
make sure that they've got the extra space, but let
them burn as much energy as they want where they
can urge you.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Right. Yeah, you want to close, you know, we always
say you want to close as quickly as you can,
but under control. And I guess that that goes the
same way. It's just gonna be less opportunity is probably
gonna be just a little more uh, you know, smart
when you're when you're leaving your net front and all
those things. The biggest thing is we want to we
still want to play fast. We want to try to
for check them and force them the neutral zone and
and take away time and space so that we create

(06:43):
turnovers for ourselves. And we've done a pretty good job
of that transition. And when we do get in the
offensive zone kind of looking inside and getting those quick
strike chances.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
Obviously, we saw Jack Kurdin come back in last week
and healed up anywhere else, hopefully coming in here to
the final push of the week.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yeah, I think that's gonna Unfortunately, I don't think you
got anymore new guys coming back, But it was nice
to see Kerns. He's skating well, I thought, So I
think he'll get a chance to me move up in
our lineup because uh, you know, his big body enter
and pace of play that he plays with is uh impressive.
So yeah, I think it'll be a very similar line up,
and uh, you know, we'll just go with the guys
that are that are going right now, and hopefully some

(07:20):
reinforcementments will be on the way.

Speaker 1 (07:22):
Been able to go around the room with any calendars
and keep them on November for Ben Stringdon when he
walks by you, so he knows the month hasn't changed.

Speaker 2 (07:29):
Yeah. Well, uh, boys, he's been he's been so good,
you know. So yeah, just really happy for him. Hopefully
I'll stay in that mindset, you know, if he just
keeps driving and shooting. You know, he's a great ability
to one time pucks and you know he's playing with
cold resting now. So it was a nice, uh nice
play that Cole made to him. So I think that's
a good, uh good connection. But yeah, I've been he's
driving play just with his pace and and his willingness

(07:52):
to shoot off the pass.

Speaker 1 (07:53):
Chance Now you've got four to go here in the
first half of the year to really make some hay
in the NCC. But I know the answers I'm asking
you this because you're not even thinking about that, because
it's just going to continue to build the process as
you close up the first half.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Right. Yeah, we did talk about it a little bit
the other day and just kind of said, hey, we
got you know, about twelve days here till till we
get our break, you know break. I think we have
about nineteen days off. So I just said, hey, let's
really be committed. We've had a good first half. Let's
uh be focused to you know, take care of the
studies and kind of be real dialed in here for
a dozen days and and uh, you know, be sharp

(08:25):
in our practices, be sharp with what we're doing to
prepare and take care of our bodies. You know, there's
a lot of flu going around, I think, so we
want guys to be uh being healthy and getting good
sleeps and rest and h Yeah, just like you say,
just try to build on, you know, our ideals about
how we want to play. You know, we want to
we want to check the score, we want to be
competitive in every battle and every race we want to

(08:46):
be uh, you know, pushing the pace and really playing
a fast, hard game and uh, if we do that. Uh,
we've kind of liked the recipe that we've been cooking
with lately. I like that. I like that.

Speaker 1 (08:57):
