Speaker 1 (00:03):
It is April, and we're bringing you football tonight from
the Fritz Bonard Athletic Center, Jack Michaels, Mike Berg and
Paul Ralston.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
And a catch made of a part side shy it
for first down. Yeah, it's football in April.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
That's what we're talking about right here, and Tracy Paya
producing our broadcast tonight. In a moment, we'll talk a
little bit about some of the new blood we touched
a little bit on the transfers, and we'll get into
the second quarter of action, so to speak, quarterbacking this
group begin Javan's tupot to Johnson. But right now let's
pause ten seconds for station identification, ten for legal id
(00:38):
Fighting Hawks football on the und Fighting Hawks Radio Network.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Number one on your Carmody set. And a new and
in food iHeartRadio fourteen to forty a fan kk XL
A Grand Forks, North Dakota Free never sounded so good.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
Just to treat to have you with U tonight on
the northern and southern end of the Red River Valley
in all parts in between. Right down at second quarter,
Javance Tupuwata Johnson going to the far side. Pass interference
is the call but prior to that it was interception
and so the defense and maybe by the end of
this maybe like grading the NFL draft, Paul, Mike and
(01:19):
I will grade the showcase. But Bennett Walker had an
interception and he's part of some of the transfers to
the University of North Dakota. Now, if you've been paying
attention back to pass Tubauwata Johnson passes complete across the
middle shaking and baking is Lukman the or Hoskins, I
should say the five to nine, one hundred and seventy
(01:39):
pounds junior and right on C Mike and Paul Kristen.
Hoskins is a transfer for the University of Minnesota. The
guy that made the pick earlier is Bennett Walker, a
transfer from San Diego State. Guys bj Fleming a wide
out Northern Arizona now und Zach Lewis defensive back Northern
Arizona now und Emanuel olig Baju is a defensive tackle.
(02:03):
Saint Thomas big Fella, Jamal Young, the second wide receiver
Arizona State transferred for North Dakota. Hoskins who just made
that catching traffic and we saw that twitch that scattered
us on him Minnesota Gopher transfer to North Dakota. We've
talked about Javan's Tupuwata Johnson transfer San Diego State quarterback,
and Bennett Walker San Diego State.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
Those are a few. Paul and Mike Michael start with
you too.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Paul talked a little bit about the shiny toy earlier
and all that, but some of these got some teeth.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Some of these boys are gonna come in and make
an impact.
Speaker 4 (02:33):
You're gonna hear those names, and then you're going to
hear more of the portal is still open, Jackets. This
roster is not set for the fall. There will be changes,
There'll be new guys brought in. Everybody's looking right now,
but there's literally thousands of players out These coaches you
talk to them and say, I'll ask them after practice,
well what do you get going now? I'm going to
(02:55):
go back and start looking at film because there's a
ton of kids out there and they do need need
to help in some spots. And so by the time
we gather again in the fall, there'll be some names
on that roster, Paul, that aren't there now.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Yeah, and Paul, those guys that come in and whether
they're immediately plugged in into a starting world or not.
What they do also to the to the existing players
at those particular position groups also drives competition, which is
what this is all about, right, Paul.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Oh, no doubt.
Speaker 5 (03:22):
I think the one thing is is that in today's
world that where we're at currently and oh wow, what
a pick we.
Speaker 1 (03:29):
Might have a pig bill might have been a pick
six too, But that's that's Owen McLeod, a linebacker out
of Lakeville, Minnesota, Lakeville South that just stepped in front
of that. He almost pulled a Whyott pedigo in Nebraska
situation right now.
Speaker 2 (03:43):
No doubt about it.
Speaker 5 (03:43):
But getting to your point, Jack, too, is that the
resume is constant basically in today's environment, you know where
you definitely want to try to build and have your
three and four year players, and that's still part of
the philosophy, but you can never exhale. It's constantly putting
down something on tape every day in practice because whoever
(04:05):
comes in basically and depending upon how things evolve and
rosters evolve from a blinking and not of an eye. Now,
you got to give credit to these guys that are
willing to come in and compete every day, and I
think you know where you heard from coach Schmidt in
that comeback from a break here. Basically that's his whole philosophy,
is that there's no relenting here on any day on
(04:28):
anything that you're doing, and everything that you're putting down
is part of the process and trying to build this
thing each and every day.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
Jerry Kaminsky now quarterbacking.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
He slings it to Jamal Young the second they afore
mentioned Jamal Young the second a transfer from Arizona State,
Mike the the the positive thing about confirming positions after
today or the positive thing that the attributes of not
confirming those positions kind of waiting for the summer to dictate.
(05:01):
He's our quarterback, this is our feature back. These are
our wide receivers. Can you make a case for both.
Speaker 4 (05:07):
Yeah, I think they'd like to have an idea going
into there's no more off season anymore, really, and so
even going into summer workouts, they go by position group
and you like to have your spots pretty well set.
Although again you don't want to go into fall practice
and say the door is not open for you to
beat somebody out here, but they're going to have an
(05:28):
idea after today where they stand, and I'm sure they're
going to have their meetings next week. They'll start meeting
on Monday with coaches and they'll know where they stand
with the program. And as we said earlier, there'll be
some kids that are told now, the way things are
in college athletics, we're not going to be able to
have you around. And so that's why it's so important
for some of these guys to play well today.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
Jerry Kaminsky at quarterback, go ahead both.
Speaker 5 (05:51):
I was just going to add here as well, speaking
of those meetings, I did ask Coach Schmidt coming into
this showcase tonight, if you notice nobody on the roster
has any of those single digit numbers. It's been talked
about quite a bit about how important those numbers will
be to this program, especially the number seven zero one
as in the seven oh one, And as of in
(06:12):
the next couple weeks, we'll start to find out who
has earned those numbers on this roster, as that will
be coming here following at the end of the season
and in the early spring heading into summer campaign. But
those numbers will start to come out as who has
earned those very special single digits.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
Right now at the Spring Showcase. If we're talking about
who has the advantage right now, I think the advantage
goes to Defenseought, we've seen two interceptions. Bennett Walker's picked
up a ball. I mentioned Owen McLeod and now Malachi
mcneale just forced to fumble. So right now, gratting this
thing out, I would say, Mike, the defense right now has.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
The defense on the scoring system we're using as ahead
eighteen to three right now going into half time.
Speaker 1 (06:52):
Any yeah, I got Paul, I guess there's a scoreboard
to my left. I haven't even paid attention. I've been
watching the game, So yes, that makes sense. By the way,
tonight's showcase, we thank our fine sponsors throughout the season
and we'll be able to tell you more about them.

(07:17):
H small debt. As far as tonight's showcase, not the
whole spring, and certainly not, but we have seen now
primarily uh Javans TUPAWATSA Johnson at the Helm and Jerry
Kaminsky and and they're airing it out a little bit
at Mike and Paul. I find myself up here trying
to say, Okay, which one's got the accuracy, which one
(07:37):
throws the dart, which one has the vision. There's about
a third progression reading the past complete downfield and then
stripped on the ground, and I'd imagine that that out
and hope we never had control.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
But to that.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
Point, Mike and Paul just between and we'll see Jack
sulk a little bit too, and Simon Agan not dressed tonight.
Rumfold so far, just on this showcase between Javance and Jerry,
Mike your thoughts.
Speaker 4 (08:05):
Well, Jerry had a year in this offense totally new
to Javans and so not much changed on the offense.
Maybe a little more vertical pass, but very familiar. So
I would say that Jerry had had a little bit
of a head start there as I just have watched him,
like I was telling you and Paul off the air.
I think Javance comes in here with incredible athletic talent
(08:29):
and maybe learns needs to learn to be a passer
more so than a thrower. He throws hard. He's one
of those guys that can throw it right through you,
but I think need to work on the accuracy, and
so that'll be something that they work on all summer.
These guys, they're they're working out in this building and
on their own all summer, so we'll see. It'd be
(08:49):
very interesting, Paul.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
It'd be easy to say these guys were obviously amped
up because they've been having these spring workouts and now
it's the quote unquote showcase in front of all these
fans now in fall deal Aera Center. It's gonna be
really loud and really out. But maybe, Paul, we're seeing
some of that that adrenaline in those arms. Alrealy On
fair to say.
Speaker 5 (09:08):
Oh, I think so, because you know, we've already seen
them try to throw and thread a few balls in
there and hasn't quite worked out. But you know, you're
also trying to you know, you're in a battle, you're
in a competition, and we haven't even mentioned that Simon
Romfo is working his way back from injurying. You know,
for for everybody that says, well, you know, these guys
have got the early edge, and maybe that's the case,
(09:30):
but it's hard to overlook a guy that has certainly
got the resume, that has actually taken live game snaps
as many as he has, so we'll have to see
how his summer campaign and early fall campaign factors in
as well. But yes, I think the adrenaline and the
anxiousness and just having that early nervousness basically maybe being
(09:50):
seen here a little bit today.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
As I mentioned earlier with Simon not dressing tonight, and
you reiterate Paul, last year rumfo through for twenty fifty
one yards, eighteen touchdown, eight interceptions, had four rushing touchdowns,
And it got to be a point last year that oftentimes,
you know, they'll say, you know, just move around of
that pocket, don't give up any receivers. It got to
be a point where they said, Simon, use your legs,
(10:14):
get out of the pocket, run a little bit. So
that's all that We'll come back. What about the special
teams now, cj Elricks, you know that leg provided some
real good emotion last year for North Dakota Fighting Hawks
football fans. Luke Silvernale certainly back the one hundred and
ninety pounds junior. You know, he averaged about thirty yards
uput You know that special teams, that's a vital aspect
(10:36):
of North Dakota football, and when we come back, Paul
Rolston will sit down with Sean Costage. We'll talk about
that and more tonight from the Fritz pauland Athletics Center
here on the campus of the University of North Dakota.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
It is the und Showcase.
