Speaker 1 (00:05):
So his first down in ten back to pass as Tracy.

Speaker 2 (00:08):
Tracy had a knocked out of his hands as he
threw it, and it's just gonna be a turnover. Is
this the second turnover the game? And he knocked out
of his hand. It appeared Rucker got in there and
knocked it out.

Speaker 1 (00:19):
He did, and You and.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
D football third down in ten Logan fight takes the
high stamp here comes in all out plentity shocked you
and D finally got to the quarterback.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Lance Rucker came in from the outside linebacker spot.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
And Lance Rucker and I forget which game it was,
it was probably on one of those highlights that I
think Paul Ralston said Jack, I think I'm just gonna
call him the wrecker, and that became like a like
something that's stuck on that back here at the PRINTZ
Pauler Athletics Center. The offense finally got to the edge
and we see some of the speed from the backfield
right there. So it's good to see a breakout there

(01:02):
against that defense.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
Mind, yeah, that was Randall Parker and to me, now
I haven't talked to him about it, it looks to
me like he's dropped a little weight. He looks quicker
than he was last year, and he's had a good
spring and he yeah, he just made a burst to
the end zone.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Well, Randall Parker is a Mountain Point High school. You know,
he averaged over nine yards per carry at Mountain Point
High in Phoenix, Arizona. Now, again we haven't three of
us haven't spent a lot of time in the Phoenix
area going over high school. But my guess is there's
probably some pretty good talent in that area. And he
averaged over nine yards carry.

Speaker 1 (01:37):
On that.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Lance Rucker quickly on that and the defense overview, Mike, Now,
we had mentioned earlier the numbers.

Speaker 1 (01:44):
You know, we were so familiar with the three four defense.

Speaker 2 (01:46):
Now you're looking at it, you know, four to two
and what that does, and you talked about that, you know, taking.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
A back around and movie on, are we going to.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
See Lance Rucker more on an edge rush type position
for North Dakota.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
Lants Rucker, We'll be a starting edge player. And actually
the edge players what used to be called defensive ends
their edge players. He is what will be called a
field edge, so he will align to the wide side
of the field if it's on a hash and he's
gonna have a little more freedom. There'll be a boundary

(02:18):
edge and a field edge, and they're gonna use his
athleticism out there. And I'll tell you what, he's going
to be tough to do. It's gonna be tough for
a tackle to block him when he decides to.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Rush the quarterback defensively, Poul there are a lot of
names not the very least to being you know, like
you know, we were all sitting there in that Iowa
State game and watching the braidon moors of the world
go down and Paul Mahart just suck because we thought
this guy's going to be an impact maker. So every
team's going to go through some injury. You know, nobody's
immune from that. So as he tries to, you know,

(02:48):
come back from that, and we talk about guys.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
Like Rucker, you know, Malachi McNeil.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
There are some names on defense poll that that should
be able to hold their own certainly for this.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
Un d two.

Speaker 4 (03:00):
Well, I know that not playing today and has been
dealing with things this spring. But I thought who developed
nicely and was asked to do a lot of things
and make decisions in the back end. Last year, Tyler
Erkman could maybe take a step for this program again,
and they would really like to see that as if
he can get healthy again, certainly, I think, you know,

(03:21):
he can be one of those guys who saw a
number of key reps, made a number of key plays
on the back end. Jack and and you look at
you know, the guys out on the islands. You know,
you talk about the Bluetts and those types of players.
You know, I had a guy that I thought last
year just on kick coverage alone when he was healthy,
Teak and Feffer. I mean, you know, he would make

(03:41):
tackles in coverage that you're in the on kickoff that
you're like shedding a blocker making a tackle. Can can
he find a way to parlay that to get off
the coverage team and get into some plays on the
defensive end or something like that. Those are the things
that maybe you see here as this summer progresses and
we get into fall cap. But there are guys out there,

(04:02):
you know, does paint Parks take the necessary steps physically?
He looks the part right and and the one thing
I had for coach Berg was and he saw every
practice this spring season with the forty two, I always say, boy,
if you're gonna go with two linebackers, those guys better
be able to run sideline to sideline. They better run
like the wind basically, and that and that will be

(04:22):
interesting to see because that will be a little different.
They may not look like a will Rotel, they may
not look like a Wyatt pedigo. They may not look
like that, but they sure better be running like Gazelle's basically.
If they're gonna go to a kind of a forty two, look.

Speaker 3 (04:35):
Well that's forty you know we we kind of you
say forty two. They're going to line up with four
linemen and two linebackers and five d backs. Really not
so much. They are all over the place. I'm having
a crazy time trying to figure out where those nickels
are lining up. The linebackers. They're not just going to
be lined up, you know, in the middle of the

(04:56):
defensive formation. They're all over the place. They're gonna bring pressures.
We are going to have our work cut out for
us trying to keep track of what those guys are doing.
I'm telling you.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
It's a case too.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
And you look in the Missouri Valley Football Conference and
whether it's South Dakota State or North Dakota State or
South they're going to pick your team.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Missouri.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
You can go down the list on this and we'll
get into the schedule coming up shortly too.

Speaker 1 (05:19):
But one thing I think.

Speaker 2 (05:20):
An area that would help North Dakota certainly in the
fall guys is being able to get to the quarterback.
And it's easier said than done. But if this team
finds a way with the scheme that Eric is putting
in here, Mike to apply more pressure, obviously, that's that's
what everybody wants.

Speaker 3 (05:37):
This man that is your new head coach and is
going to be essentially the defensive coordinator. Help has coach
defense in the National Championship FBS National.

Speaker 1 (05:47):
He understands what pressure is about, right.

Speaker 3 (05:49):
He's a defensive coordinator San Diego State. I mean, these
guys play the highest level football areas in the country.
He knows this stuff. And if he says I think
we're going to be pretty good, I think they're going
to pretty good.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
That take his word for it.

Speaker 2 (06:01):
By the way, North the count of fans make sure
to check out Shields or Shields Now. I was just
at Shields today Shields dot Com. When it's time to
gear up for game day or tailgate shields proud to
support und Athletics. Eric Schmidt now addressing the team. By
the way, if you're keeping score at home, that's an
old announcers statement, rightfer keeper's scoring home defense one thirty

(06:24):
two to seventeen. And you know what I think, for
every showcase, it's almost like spring training baseball. Usually one
side is a little bit ahead of the other until
the other gets its traction.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
So, Paul, it doesn't shock me.

Speaker 2 (06:36):
The defense came out here, picked off a couple passes,
you know, covered pretty well, got some pressures, got beat
a couple of times on backs around. We talked about
Brunell going going the distance. Corey Tye caught a ball
down here. But that makes sense, Paul. The defense looked
active out there.

Speaker 4 (06:52):
No, And I think they were probably challenged because I
think in the spring there have been times where I
think the offense has looked a little bit ahead and
probably should be because you look at the offensive lineman
that have returned that coach Fricty can rely upon, and
you can look at even you know, guys like Sam
Strandel they've had he's had live reps out there, and
then Zee Barth and others have had running plays behind

(07:12):
some of these experienced linemen. They probably have had the
advantage in some of the spring practices. I'm sure the
challenge went out here coming into this one for defense,
take a step forward today, take a step forward tonight,
and I think they did when.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
We come back, and eventually we'll have coach Schmidt. Obviously
everybody wants a piece of Erick's time, but certainly we'll
bring him and try to bring him to the landing.
Here yet to come. Paul Rawlson sits down. We've talked
to offense, defense special teams. Isaac Frickty will hear from
him and what he has in store with this offense,
not the very least to being maybe about that quarterback

(07:45):
battle that's going on. Every college coach loves a good
quarterback battle. You know, iron sharpens iron, everybody fighting for
his spot. Simon obviously not dressed today. We did see
three quarterbacks shoes today, a couple of different running banks
out there, certainly a bevy of why receivers, some tight
end usage today. Isaac Frickti yet to come as well.

(08:05):
We're broadcasting live from the Fritz Pollard Athletics Center. It
is the und spring Football Showcase. The fans certainly did
not disappoint today.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
Man.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
They came out today that sunshine is firing through those
windows here at the Fritz Pollard And now a lot
of the fans have come from their seats down to
the track, many family members and folks as the team
being addressed by Eric Schmidt and others.

Speaker 1 (08:30):
Well. Be back.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Fracy Tyer producing our game, Jack, Michael Spikeberg.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
Paul Rolston.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
It is the Spring Football Showcase and you're listening to
