Speaker 1 (00:05):
Hand off to Gavans. Teller's death puts.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Arm breaks the tackle, breaks two spins across the forty
and he's up into the forty four yard line. That's
a gate of fourteen, a sea burst, and there's your
first chain movement of the second half. Simon takes the snap,
turns and hands off the sid sidle stiff arm.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
Forty forty five minute Pam Simon cut a round. Go,
Sawyer go go, Sawyer.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Go touchdown, Sawyer saddle fame.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
What did it open?
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Seventy yarders touchdown in North Dakota is back.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Of the board.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
He hit the corner and it was goodbye.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Now we want to hear more of those coming up
this year. Right hitting the corner. We actually did see
a little bit of that with Brenelle today in the
spring showcase, hitting that corner and taking.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
Off in a moment.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Speaking of the offense, we'll hear from offensive coordinator Isaac Frickting.
But before we do anything on this Friday night, let's
pause ten seconds for station identification. Ten Friday is Fighting
Hawks Football Spring Showcase on the und Fighting Hawks Radio Network,
Number one on your Carmadyo set ten of a new
(01:15):
and food iHeartRadio at fourteen to forty a the fan
kk xl A Grand Forks, North Dakota Free never sounded
so good. Jack Michaels, Paul Rolston, Mike Berg the coach,
and Tracy Palu with us. We will get into yet
to come tonight, look ahead to that schedule and more
(01:36):
and maybe we will choose maybe our position group north
of Kota Beef Commission player of the game. But since
we heard some offensive highlights there, Isaac Frickty, we're talking
about moving chains, putting the ball in the end zone,
scoring points.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Where's it going to count?
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Paul Rolston as the opportunity to sit down with the
coach Risky Fricky, let's go back over to Paul.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
Thanks so much, Jack, We're with the offensive coordinator, coach
frick Dy and coach. When you look at the spring
in its entirety when you went into it, and I
know there's pieces, but there's also some good pieces to
continue to build on from what you saw last year
and what you were able to work with. What perspective
did you have at practice one all the way to
the end of the of the practice as this spring, well, I.
Speaker 5 (02:17):
Think we did a good job of just getting in rhythm.
You know, the offensive line, the blocking unit, the running
backs have been you know, a good staple for the
last year, you know, just in the sense of my
time here, you know, and we've got a lot to
replace with graduating four tight end seniors, you know, Bo
Belquist and Nick Kupfer and some of the wide.
Speaker 6 (02:38):
Receivers that we've lost as.
Speaker 5 (02:40):
Well, and it's just been all about rhythm, so trying
to get young receivers and tight ends and young quarterbacks
to get on the same page. And early on, you know,
we did some really really good things and then we
kind of hit a lull there and then we've kind
of come on as of late here just in terms
of getting on the same page finally and getting comfortable
with it. You know, don't got to get the guys
(03:01):
to stop thinking so much and play fast and go
out and execute at a high level, because they're very capable.
It's just sometimes overprocessing.
Speaker 4 (03:08):
You talk about that receiver group and some of the
guys that made such good contributions and Bo Belquist, I mean,
you don't replace a guy like that. But Cayden Dennis,
you know, continues to set a standard of he'll go
make a tough play over the middle. He showed that
in his career. So far, you've got others that have
been through it a little bit, and then you got
some new blood in there to demonstrate what was their growth.
(03:28):
Would you think from maybe practice one to kind of
get everything you know, understanding the terminology and all those
things and how you want certain things ran, there's got
to be a large learning curve involved for some of
those guys on the edge.
Speaker 6 (03:40):
Yeah, I mean, Coach Schmidt says it best.
Speaker 5 (03:43):
I never heard the term until he came back to you, Indy,
I should say skilled development is ugly, you know.
Speaker 6 (03:49):
I just I just thought it was all hard work.
Speaker 5 (03:51):
It takes time to get bigger, faster, stronger, on the
same page, better, whatever you want to say. But it's
been ugly and at times it's been really a and
it's it's not for a lack of effort. That's been
the best thing about it is our guys have taken
hold of the offense, taken hold of how we do
things here, the standard which has been set and trying
to exceed it.
Speaker 6 (04:11):
So they're getting on the same page.
Speaker 5 (04:13):
They're learning, you know, and it sometimes with transfers it's
hard because it's well, this meant this at my old school,
and now it means that, you know, So you're kind
of trying to ingrain everything together, if that makes sense,
because it's like, yeah, that's how we want it done,
but we call it this, you know.
Speaker 6 (04:31):
So it's difficult.
Speaker 5 (04:33):
It takes time, and to be honest with you, I
hate it because you're looking at every other day practice
where you wish it was just fall camp and you
could just practice every day and those corrections would take
hold faster and sooner because you have film and you
have on the field opportunities where here you're yes, you're
film and on the field, but you got to wait
a day, you know. And I tell the guys all
(04:54):
the time, I'm impatient. I want it done now and
want it done right. So it's a learning curve. We're
getting there. We're figuring that.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Out offensive front. You talked about that offensive line. The
number of guys that have been in the in the
battles already with live game reps in their careers, and
that's got to be nice to know. But yet you
want to see them take a step. I would assume
that they have got a pretty good attitude about how
to handle and continue to build and stack practices and
it may if it starts there, that's a good place
to start it.
Speaker 6 (05:20):
For the offense, yeah, no doubt.
Speaker 5 (05:21):
I mean, we're going to go as far as our
offensive line goes, you know. There that's the group that
we're going to lean on. They've been the best in
terms of our leadership council, our starving board, our grades.
Every single day they've been the best unit. So they're
going to get leaned on a lot. And too much
is given much as you know, expected, So they've done
a great job. It's been really fun to work with
them because I think, you know, between this year and
(05:44):
last year, coach Olsen has done a really good job
with them. It's something new, but let's master what's new today,
you know. And we've we've tried to streamline things with
one day only running inside zone and then the next
day only running outside zone, you know, or the following
day you're only running counter you know, and it gets monotonous.
But our point is, let's become masters of the basics
(06:05):
and let's get to a point of knowing exactly what
everybody's supposed to be doing at every given point regardless
of front structure or whatever, and let's be able to
go out and execute and understand our calls.
Speaker 6 (06:16):
So it's been really good. They've led our offense, they've
led our team.
Speaker 5 (06:19):
Got to keep getting the quarterbacks to take the next
step in the leadership since and I think we'll be okay.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
One of the last things I'll go and visit with
you about is we saw it come out in the paper,
that communication now, the in helmet communication feature. I'm sure
that's been a growing experience throughout the spring too, of
kind of learning how this is going to function for
your purposes for a team. I'm sure all sorts of
teams have different perspectives how this works best. Are you
guys still going to do some refining to that through
(06:47):
the summer and then as you start fall camp.
Speaker 5 (06:49):
Yeah, I mean, no question, it's been a great advantage
for us, But myself included, I'm learning as we go
through it because as a player, I understood it, but
as a coach it's been more and more difficult to
comprehend because at times I think we got a great
grasp of being able to do live signals, dead signals,
fake signals, but also have helmet communication with it as well,
(07:11):
so we're trying to do a really good job of
varying it up. I have to do a good job
of not communicating with the quarterbacks at times because the helmet.
Speaker 6 (07:19):
Will cut off.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
Yeah, so they have to understand signals, tempos, all that
stuff just like they have before because the helmet is
going to cut off. And we've had our struggles. We've
had our ups and downs with it, but it's been
really good. It'll be nice to streamline and hopefully play
more efficient.
Speaker 4 (07:37):
I guess again, it's just another step here with this program,
another added feature.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
That football enthusiasts.
Speaker 4 (07:44):
And you've got so many players that follow this team
from different eras. They never had anything like this, so
it's all new to us. It should be a lot
of fun. Thanks for a little glimpse of the spring here,
and let's have a great summer ahead.
Speaker 6 (07:54):
Yeah, thank you.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
North.
Speaker 4 (07:55):
Go to offensive coordinator Isaac Frickti joining us here, Jack,
and we'll set it back upstairs to you.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Great stuff as always, Paul, Yeah, Isaac and coach fifty
in that offense. Just some inside some numbers from twenty
twenty four the University of North Dakota last season, rushed
the ball four hundred and eighty times, they passed it
three hundred and seven average, one hundred and eighty seven
on the ground, about one hundred and seventy three in
the air.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
And then if you break down.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
The scoring from the first half to the second half,
North Dakota put up two hundred and sixteen points in
the first half and then that number dropped off to
the tune of around seventies, like one hundred and forty
six in the second half. Now, those are just overall
big numbers, but I love what Isaac was talking about there,
and Mike had talked about some of the diversity. Obviously
we're looking at a you know, Schmidty and some of
(08:41):
the new coaches. Isaac's the same, but he's such a
great mind utilizing the tight ends and all that kind
of stuff. So good stuff with with coach fifty right there.

(09:45):
But the other day I was looking at North Dakota
un d and in twenty four then looking ahead obviously
to our season coming up of the fall.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
And we all love home games.
Speaker 2 (09:54):
Obviously your fan base is there, uh you know, revenues
are there, and everybody love you want to get as
many as humanly possible.
Speaker 1 (10:02):
But is it just me? Or was last year strange?
Speaker 2 (10:06):
And the fact almost fools goldish And I'm not gonna
use the word complacent, but got comfortable with a chunk
of September games at home in which you fared pretty well,
got yourself in a position then just because of the
way the schedule was last year, now you found a
lot of games on the road, and then it started
dominoing and it was an odd you know, we had
(10:29):
teetertotlers at Wilkinson Elementary and Wilson last Paul right, and
it's kind of like a Teeter Tutner last year from
a skepta and it's not this year this year.
Speaker 1 (10:37):
If we're looking to schedule road home, road home, road home,
all the way through.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
Yeah, and you look at it from a standpoint to
that's usually how it works out. Certainly, North Dakota will
continue to try to find ways to get more home
games than road games if possible. In today's environment, it
can vary from year to year, and certainly with the
FBS games that you get on the schedule, those are
(11:01):
scheduled years in advance, of course, and so it can
fluctuate from one year to year. You know, you talk
about the note that insurance company scoreboard and the schedule
this year, you talk a little bit about the back
and forth, never really getting a homestand that's okay. I mean,
you know, coach Schmid talks a little bit about how
they don't want to see a drop off from practice
(11:24):
to practice. They want you to attack every practice with
the schedule will have your attention from the get go.
There will be no opportunities to have any drop offs,
basically because the schedule gets right to you right from
the very beginning. And I think that North Dakota with this,
with this group and this leadership and then the identity
of this team from the top down, I think they'll
(11:47):
navigate it quite well. Actually, and I don't know what
coach Berg will add to that, but that's my belief
so well.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
And I believe in road games, I think, you know, yeah,
I would love everything to be at home. And if
you get twelve games and you could somehow split that
six and six or seven and five, but if they
last year, that chunk at home and then all of
a sudden, even I heard some of the players going, man.
Speaker 1 (12:05):
We haven't been on that we've been you know.
Speaker 2 (12:07):
And again I'm not using the term complation because they
won these things, but it was an odd year, one
of those strange years.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
Well, that last month of the season was tough when
you're trying to get untracked and then you go on
the road again. I know there will be some changes
this year in the just the travel itinerary, how things
are going to be done, everything from departure times to
meetings to practices to what happens on the road. There'll
be some changes that Coach Schmidt has brought in and
(12:36):
so we'll we'll see things a little bit differently from
our perspective as well. But I like the schedule that
they have coming up this year. I've looked at it
several times, and I think they have a chance looking
at that schedule to really have a successful season.
Speaker 2 (12:53):
Opening up August thirtieth. By the way, Levery remind you
potatoes are packed with nutrition for peak cathotic performance. Maybe
they'll let us take can few on the road with us.
Northland Potato Growers Association proud to fuel fighting Hawks athletics
to that point, Poll and Mike, Mike, I like it too. Saturday,
August thirtieth, Manhattan, Kansas, So Kansas State. There's an FBS
(13:14):
game and a NORTHA Kelty. Those are good, Let's not
get ourselves. Those are money games. There's an opportunity to
pick off an FBS team, and we saw what happened.
We thought last year against Iowa State, Oh no, what's
going to happen here? Because that first drive seventeen seconds
you're down and then boom defense all of a sudden,
like hey, here we go. So that's August thirty, returning
(13:35):
home against Portland State at Montana versus valpel So there's
four right there, non conference out of the gate, and
I know fans are probably like, we are no different,
going well, we'll see what happens a case state. But
if you can pick off Portland State and man that
Montana game. Man, if you get that, you know, Paul,
you can alreadyse everybody's going to the community and Old
Servant home. If you get three and I you're three
and one, and then if you can pick off at
(13:56):
Northern I everybody play it. I'm glad Schmidt made I'd
be listening right now because you know, I think he's
worried about it, just getting better.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
Tell The last thing I'll say tonight is number one,
the fans that came out for this new edition of
North Dakota football, so encouraging.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
Thank you a number two.
Speaker 4 (14:14):
Really excited just being down and around the field level
with the players. They really have a fun about them
and the right attitude. I could detect that just being
around them. And number three, I'm I'm excited about whatever
the challenge. It's a challenging schedule. I'm excited to take
it on and I think fans should be as well.
And I can't wait for that opportunity to get down
(14:36):
to the Little Apple. But I'm even more excited to
get home against Portland State, back to the Alier Center.
Speaker 1 (14:41):
That's good. Paul thinks you're going to bring voodoo donuts
from Portland, but I hope so I have too.
Speaker 2 (14:46):
Bunny, Hey, thanks Paul for you obviously, and Mike, great
to see you.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
Won't be long.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
We're back this these three Amigo's back callin football.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
Final thoughts from you, Mike.
Speaker 3 (14:57):
Oh, I really enjoyed seeing him go live out here.
You wrapped up spring practice, which becomes an ordeal on
a high note. And I hopefully they got through without
too many bumps and bruises. And I want to see
the guys that didn't participate today get healthy. You know,
they played seventy some kids today. That's not going to
happen in the future. You go on the road, you
(15:19):
take fifty some and so what you saw here today
was guys that are trying to get a look, as
we said on film, but it's going to be fun
once they get down to the guys that are playing.
They're too deep and then we start seeing seeing them
game plan and then get ready week to week I
will be back into it. It'll feel very comfortable, very quickly.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
Yeah, and then they'll start counting for real. Good to
see you, partner, Big things to all those that joined
us tonight on the broadcast, to Isaac Frickty certainly to

was awesome to have to be able to sit there
