Speaker 1 (00:02):
Can we welcome you back here to howk doc downtown
Grand Forks as the Fighting Hawk football program has broken
fall camp, or the preseason camp and got an into
their game week preparation and now joining us inside the
five h six pub for the first edition of Hawk
Talk here in twenty twenty five twenty six is the
(00:22):
new head coach at the University of Northakota football program,
Eric Schmidt. Everybody, well, here we go. I mean it's
it's time now, I guess coach, welcome aboard. We're glad
to have you here.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Yeah, it's great, too, great to be here and good
to be a start of a game week. Man, it's fun.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
Yeah, you know, so much has happened. I mean, it
was a whirlwind to get through the spring. You've had
the summer, still a whirlwind. You get to fall camp.
You've just finally broken fall camp here. What last week
late and you were it was a busy one for
really deciding on rolls and allowing guys to compete and
(01:00):
try to figure that out on their own with all
the things that are graded in fall camp, and you
came to some interesting decisions, maybe for the fans out there,
announcing your quarterback the other day. You had three good competitors,
four good competitors out there, maybe five actually, and in
you know some of the corner spots that's you know,
maybe raised a few things because you had a freshman
(01:21):
listed on the depth chart. So a lot of things
being you know, this was a very active fall camp
to sort through, wasn't it.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Yeah? I think you know, you talk about the competitive
side of things, I mean it really ever since January.
You know, I think the obviously the good part about
training camp is it's it's heavy investment into football. You
can do a little bit more now in the summer
with with how the rules are are set up to
be able to at least work with your guys individually
a little bit and get out on the field and
(01:47):
do some of those things. But I just think the
competition really since day one, you know, whether it was
for positions, for you know, the starving board stuff that
we do, as far as giving the guys feedback and
how we feel like they're doing on a day in,
day out basis, and then obviously when it comes to
you know, jersey numbers, and then in the positions, like
it was extremely competitive training camp. I thought a lot
of jobs. You know, guys were fighting for were you know,
(02:10):
they were highly competitive, and you know this is the
start obviously, you know, you you sum everything up and
you make decisions. But you know, what our football team
looks like now is way different than what it looked
like coming out of spring ball, and what it looks
like in you know, six weeks from now could be
could be a lot different too as well. So I
just think it's that, you know, the mantra that we
talk about relentless pursuit of continuous improvement, that that's something
(02:32):
that's going to continue. Just because you know, you might
be disappointed where your name's at on the depth chart
right now doesn't mean that that can't change come you know,
come conference season.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
So one of the questions I had in the announcement
the other day was you named your captains, and certainly
some of them didn't surprise me, but would when you
looked at it from what your team told you this,
these are the guys we want to be as our
captains the leadership group. Did it surprise you as a
staff of who ended up being those guys where you
(03:00):
pretty much in lockstep of what came down from the
pipeline from the voices of of your team.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
Yeah, no, I think I think our guys were spot on.
We we talk a lot about, you know, our guys
being player led and and holding each other accountable to
the standard day in and day out. And you know,
I think our staff was you know, I mentioned the
four names and a lot of times you'll, uh, you know,
you might get some disagreements and things like that from
certain people around the table, and you know, there wasn't
one thing that was said. It was like, yeah, that
(03:26):
makes sense, and we went down and announced them after that.
So I think those are the guys that you know,
I've done a great job of being able to, you know,
just lead. And I think, you know, if you want
to be a leader, it's really three things. One you
got to be able to communicate. Two, you got to
want to be a leader, you know what I mean.
You got to want to lead from the front and
get out there. And three you got to be authentic.
You got to be yourself. Like it's it's not about
you know, reading a book and then just regurgitating what
(03:48):
you read to the rest of the players. You know,
I want you to be yourself. And I think all
those guys are you know, really good when it comes
to their humility. You know, they're unselfish, they're they're guys
that really help out, you know, in a lot of
different ways, whether it's in the weight room, you know,
special teams, wise, offense defense, you know, all those in
the meeting rooms, all those types of things. They just
they're about it, you know, and they're about you know,
(04:09):
approaching it with the with the right mindset. They got
a growth mindset. They're they're fine with, you know, getting
called out by their teammates. They're fine with, you know,
making mistakes and making sure that they get corrected. So
I think they just set a really good example for
you know, what we want our team to be and
uh and what we want our leaders to be.
Speaker 1 (04:24):
One of the things that you know, I always think
about fall camp is it can be a grind day
to day, drill after drill. What was a what's a
message from a coach smidt led team about when when
it's starting to wear on you a little bit? You know,
because it it can and and you know guys that
(04:44):
maybe have been Boy, this is my fourth fall camp here.
You know, Holy how my body's feeling it. My brain
is feeling it, what what kind of message happens from
you and your staff, and those sequences were in the
You're about ten days in and it's really starting to
become a grind.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Yeah, I know. I I think that's when you really
find out guys, Hey do they do they love ball? Right?
Like some people like, you know, football, some people love football.
What I mean by that like if you took it
away from them, they would, you know, maybe be upset
for a day or two, but they would you know,
they'd be able to live without it. And certain people,
you know, they would be devastated. And you know, I
think that's where we really try to challenge our guys
(05:20):
is like, hey man, what's your love you know, for
the game, for the sport, for this team, for you know,
the entire organization, for this university. And you know, when
you get into those those kind of soul searching days,
it's you know, you really find out like, hey, do
I love football or do I love what football can
do for me? You know? And there's a difference there,
like hey man, maybe I love the apartment or I
love the you know, the scholarship, or I love the
(05:42):
you know, the nutrition, I love you know those types
of things like would you do it for free? You
know what I mean? Would you do it for free
if it weren't paying there, if you weren't getting a scholarship,
if you weren't doing any of those things. Would you
come out here and lay on the line every single day?
And I think that's that's the message that we try
to get across to our guys and really really challenge them,
you know, in that aspect, like hey, do you love
with football for you? Or do you love football? You know?
(06:02):
And I think those are things that that you really
find out once you know, once the newness wears off, right,
it's you know, I compared it to UH. I compare
it to UH to a lot of different things, but it's, hey,
once you go through, you know, the newness wears off,
like you still got to have the right energy and
the right excitement about coming out every single day to
get better.
Speaker 1 (06:21):
You did name your quarterback yesterday, Jerry Kaminski, the the sophomore,
third year quarterback out of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin who's been
in this program for a while under coach Bubba Schweigert,
now under your direction, and you know, as you mentioned,
I think in your press conference yesterday was it was
a good competition every day. Guys made plays and we're
(06:42):
we're making cases for there the reason why they should
be taking snaps game one. And my question is other
than just like completions and touchdowns throwing in practices, like
what goes into grading the quarterback position to really identify
who's ready to be that guy for game one?
Speaker 2 (07:00):
I think there's a lot of things. The things that
I look for is just, uh, you know, who can
move the football multiple ways? You know, we have some
strengths and and obviously weaknesses. Everybody does as far as
you know, an offense or a defense or special teams
and and uh, you know, I just think, you know, uh,
when you talk about like the competition, it was really close.
But you know, just looking at the consistency of being
able to move the fall, move the football and move
(07:21):
it in different ways, you know, I think that was
something that was was really important to me. Then the
decision making process too as well, I think is a
big thing, like hey, you you can you can lose
the game at quarterback too as well if you're trying
to do too much, you know, and guys that really
value the football and make good decisions and understand like, hey,
this is a good calculated decision like like like that
I'm making here, and they can they can explain the
(07:43):
decision after the play too as well what they were thinking.
And and I just got over the course of time
and it was really close. I mean between you know, uh,
Javance and Jerry, you know, especially going down the stretch
like those guys were, you know, we're really close. And
Simon I felt like was was coming on to as well.
And Simon's just a you know, just a competitor, you know,
you know, probably genetically he's not the same as those
(08:04):
two guys are, but you know, just as you know,
as about as big of a heart as you can have,
and competes every single day and love everything that he
brings about it too as well. And then at the end,
I think, you know, no matter how good your offensive
line is, no matter you know, where you're at at
other positions, your offense is always going to take on
the personality of the quarterback. And I think that's a
big thing. I think Javanz has the it factor. I
(08:26):
think Jerry has gotten better, you know, I mean with
that as it's gone along, I really feel like, you know,
the guys are going to rally around. You know, really
any of those guys, I think they're all three, you know,
good leaders. They're all three really humble guys that are
in for the right reasons, that want to help lead
a football team and have a really you know, great
experience winning a lot of games. Like they're competitive, but
(08:46):
you know, you have to make a decision. And I
think as it were, as it wore on, like I said,
in the middle of camp, I thought those guys were
really you know, coming along like it was. It was very,
very tight. And then you know, maybe the last four
or five days where I think Jerry kind of settled
down and and really started to uh to you know,
take his his progressions and and his his maturation and
(09:07):
just his game. I thought to another level was like,
all right, like it's time to name him. He's earned it.
And that's that's what we talked about going in. Whoever
earns it, that that's when we're gonna make a decision.
There wasn't a date that we were going to say
to that. It was. It was when somebody was gonna
earn the job.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
A couple of things here with your defensive banks. You've
got guys that have been in this program that had
made plays like Avery Scott Tyler Erkman was a youngster
last year that was throlling in and had to learn
a lot and had to work back from any injury.
Gi Martin has seen time Jet Sutton. Then you bring
in a guy like Bennett Walker, who I just love
visiting with him. I met with him during our media
(09:41):
day during fall camp. Really enjoyed kind of what he
brought and the energy and and just saying, hey, I
got to earn it, just like everybody else. I didn't
just come here to show up. I I got to
work and figure out a way to car vote a
role here and I think he already has. And then
you got a freshman who's just fresh out of things,
you know, in Grant Nolan, who you know, for a
(10:02):
lot of us, we you know, we don't see all
the highlight tapes and you know, all the film coming
out of high school and or what a guy can
do and and those things. But you know, there's a
guy that has put together his film day by day
by day, in each and every practice and and has
earned himself an opportunity to get some looks right away
here in his career.
Speaker 2 (10:22):
I think, you know, you always sit in front of
a team and and really try to, you know, explain
to them that, hey, all jobs are open like like that,
you got to go out there every single day. We're
not gonna play the you know, the best players in
twenty twenty four, We're gonna play the best players in
twenty twenty five. And you know some of the names
that you mentioned, Ben and Walker wasn't here in twenty four.
You know, Grant Nolan wasn't here in twenty four. So
(10:42):
I think, you know, if you're a true competitor and
you understand that, hey, like there's always going to be,
you know, an influx of talent, there better be an
influx of talent coming into your program every single year,
then you know, you got to fight to be able
to to be able to keep your job. And we
want anybody comfortable. We want guys showing up every day
understanding that, hey, I got a job to do. I
got to make sure that that I produce today, that
I'm doing what I'm supposed to do in order for
(11:03):
me to you know, to be able to keep my
job and to be able to you know, keep my
carve out my role and keep my name on the
top of the depth chart. So I think, you know,
the cool thing about that is all those different, you know,
scenarios that we had as far as young guys, older guys,
transfer guys you know, coming in, and then some guys
that transferred into positions and the guys that were here
one of those jobs that I think it solidifies the
message that hey, like, hey, it's not what you did yesterday,
(11:25):
it's what you did today, and you got to keep
doing that if you want to be able to be
a guy who's going to be on the top of
the depth chart.
Speaker 1 (11:31):
The thing that you did really quickly and I mean
blink of an eye type quick when in today's college
football calendar, there is no moment to exhale, essentially, and
you had to assemble with staff, whether it be staff
members who are currently here and there are some of
those and there are you know, new guys that you
(11:53):
wanted to bring with you to infuse this roster the
way you wanted to. How do you feel that staff
has come together? Here? Is we get too week one
in game one for North to go.
Speaker 2 (12:04):
Yeah, No, I think it's been awesome. I think you
can ask our players. You know, we've had a number
of events and staff outings and recruiting events and things
like that where we'll bring recruits in, We'll bring our
current players in to be able to meet the recruits.
And you know a lot of times when when you
don't have a good culture, the players will show up,
they'll eat, they'll hang out for five or ten minutes,
(12:24):
and it's deuces.
Speaker 1 (12:25):
Right like we're out of oh yeah yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
And we've had events where you know, the guys are
around for you know, three four hours and it's you know,
the coaches saying, hey, guys, like get out of here.
You got to go do something else. I mean, like
we're going to bed, We got to wake up in
the morning and go work. So I just think, you know,
they like being around their position coaches. They feel like
they're getting developed. You know, they feel like, hey, like
this is the place that that they can treat achieve
(12:47):
their dreams. They want to lock arms, you know with
the guys that are leading their rooms. And I'm big
on that, Like, you know, I'm not a guy that's
gonna go and and uh and micro manage, like if
if you're coaching the corners you're the head coach of
the corners room, you know what I mean, the tight
ends Like, you're the head coach of the tight ends room.
If there's an obstacle in your way that you need
my help with, like, let me know. I'm going to
help make your job easier, make it that you can
(13:08):
develop those guys to the best of your ability. And
maybe I'll throw a few comments in there if I
see some blind spots you know that are going on.
But at the end of the day, like I just
feel like we got the right butts in the right
seats and those guys are doing a great job of
developing their rooms.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
We've gotten a great glimpse of North Dakota football here
over the last several months in the lead up to
Game one with Coach Schmidt at the helm and what
he's going to be going into that Game one with
with this team. When we take a quick break here,
we're going to come back and talk a little bit
about what his team faces. One of the programs that
has been synonymous with the high level football for a
(13:44):
long long time. You know, you got to remember where
this Kansas State team came from in the late eighties
and the early nineties and then Bill Snyder put his
stamp on it and it's been go time ever since.
And now coach Climbing down there is doing a great
job as well in that building that is an after
the Snyder family. So we're going to talk a little
bit about the opponent when we return on the other side,
(14:05):
as Hawk Talk continues from the five oh six Pub
downtown Grand Forks and all across the Fighting Hawks Radio network.
