Speaker 1 (00:05):
And we welcome you back here to Hawk Talk downtown
Grand Forks, the five zero six pub inside Hugo's Pure Market,
and I'm Paul Ralston. We're glad to have you along
with us all across the Fighting Hawks Radio network on
this night. We want to tell everybody out there listening,
whether you're listening on fourteen forty AM the Fan, streaming
it live on the iHeartRadio app, or even listening in
(00:25):
Fargo on seven forty KNFL the Fan as well, we
want to welcome all those listeners across the state of
North Dakota as they gear up for a new sports
season ahead, with soccer already going, volleyball about to get
their season started, and head football coach Publish Sweigert has
joined our program to talk to you Indy football Game one.
(00:46):
Here we go, all right, coach, here we go. Game one.
It's a trip to an FBS program. But before we
even get to that, you know, everything started back when
we were kind of winding this show up in the spring.
You guys were kind of just in the middle of
your spring campaign, and you know that was a critical
(01:07):
one for a lot of guys. How did you feel
the spring set up your summer and into your fall camp.
How did that go?
Speaker 2 (01:14):
Yeah, I think our guys have done a really good
job beginning with it the winter semester and you know,
just really have worked hard to connect and you know,
we had coach Frickty join us in January and Coach
Olson in February, was spring ball into March, and I
just think the guys have done a good job of
(01:35):
embracing change and really working to learn and get to
know each other. And throughout the spring, you know, we
made good progress and I feel like we had a
really good summer. And Coach Stein as a strength coach
has been working with our guys now for six months,
more than six months, and the guys are really into
his programming and all those things, you know, our new
(01:59):
learning things. But you have to embrace that change, and
I'm really pleased with the guys how they've done that.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
If there's one coach that tends to interact with the
players more than any of the other coaches, including yourself,
it's the strength and conditioning coach. So having that good relationship,
it's coach dying along with the players.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Yeah, he spends the most time with him. Yeah, whether
it's in the weight room or you know pre practice,
warm up, stretching, you know, at the meals during fall camp.
He you know, really invested a lot of time into
getting to know these guys. But that's a strength coach
all across the country. They're very key to your staff
because they spend the most time with the guys.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
When you look at when you came into fall camp,
I know that the the storyline by for us that
we're following it was quarterback. Who's going to be the quarterback?
That's the one that gets the news and pub But
there were a lot of battles going along. You were
trying to sort through some offensive line things, a lot
of opportunities there for guys outside linebacker. You're trying to
sort through some opportunities even on the back end at
(03:02):
your safeties. And so there was a lot of position
battles that you've been trying to navigate through through the
fall camp.
Speaker 2 (03:08):
Yeah, and they're still going on. Yeah, we want guys
competing and improving day after day. And you know, the
quarterback position obviously gets a lot of attention, but we
have you know, four spots open on the O line
that we had to get settled and three new spots
on the D line. You know, some of those guys
had started, both Elijah Beach and Craig Orlando, but they
(03:31):
had rotated in and out a little bit, so those
spots were open. And then a lot of spots in
the secondary at safety in the corner, and so we're
working through it and really excited about giving these guys
that opportunity and the competition has been good for us.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
When you've had your conversations with Coach Schwinz Spire and
your player personnel on that defense, what are some of
the things that you wanted to emphasize here as you
go through the spring summer and into the fall camp
on the defensive side of the ball as a unit
coming into this year.
Speaker 2 (04:03):
Yeah, you know, you really got to be good at
the fundamentals on defense, and you know, tackling is right,
you know, so important that you tackle well. So we
worked really hard on that even in our winter conditioning
just at how we approach tackling to work it into
our sprength strength and conditioning, and in spring ball we
(04:24):
devoted a lot of time to it pursue to the ball,
you know, as effort, but you also got to do
it with a purpose. You know, running to the ball
is one thing, but you know, taking the proper angles
and working together because it takes eleven guys to really
play a good defense, you know, and then as you
get into the closer to games, you know, it's eliminating
explosive plays if you make people drive the football and
(04:47):
good tackling really helps in that area and pursue to
the ball. And therefore, you know, the longer they have
to drive the ball, and more plays they have to run,
and better opportunities have to force turnovers. And that's really
what it's all about, is taking the ball away. You know.
Speaker 1 (05:03):
As talking to Coach Berg, our color analyst on the
Fighting Hawks Radio Network about this very topic today, was
specialists because we often sometimes overlook and it's something that
you constantly tell me. There's no overlooking special teams in
North Dkot's football program because you spend a lot of
time on it. But you're specialists. You do have some
(05:25):
guys that have been through it that have grown from
last year from your punter and your long snapper and
your and your place kicker. So those guys another year older,
sharpening their skills. What about the returners and guys that
you're trying to find roles for in punt return and
kick return. I'm sure you're trying to define guys that
are comfortable in those spots as well.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Well, we wouldn't need a lot of depth that are
and you know, Bob Alquist is really sure handed and
smart and headsy. So back on pond with Caden Dennis,
and we're working some other guys back there too, And
for kickoff return, it's Sawyer Sidel, oh yeah, Cory Tye,
(06:05):
Donovan Hunt, Nate Demontagnac. You know, we have a number
of guys back there that we're working together and trying
to find the right combination. But you know, we think
Sawyer has a skill set that really lends to kick
off return. And you know we got to have somebody
ready with Bo taking a lot of offensive snaps, can
he be back there and punt it all the time?
(06:27):
You know, So just a number of things we're working
on and developing the depth there. But Paul, we spend
so much time on special teams. And you know, the
one thing I watched some of the Week zero games
caught parts of them, and the one thing that really
irks me is when these guys say, well, that's a
first week mistake. Well, we try to work really hard.
(06:47):
We just don't believe in first week mistakes. You should
have eleven guys out there all the time. You just
got to really work hard at that through your fall
camp and get ready for game one.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
That's really interesting. Yeah, when you and you hear the
old radio crew or the television crew say a week
one mistake, and yeah, you're right, you coach it. We
want to be past the week one mistakes. Well, Week one,
your opponent is Iowa State. We'll talk about the Cyclones.
We've got segment one in the books here with head
coach Bubba Schweiger. Of course he'll lead us off most shows.
(07:17):
He made way for a couple of important guests here
to get our season started. We'll talk about the game
one opportunity for the University of North Dakota football program
against the Iowa State Cyclones. When we return to the
five oh six Pub downtown Grand Forks, under Merz and
fifth go come out and join us here. Hopefully, as
the season progresses and it continues next all across the
Fighting Hawks Radio network,
