Speaker 1 (00:02):
And welcome back here to the five oh six Pub downtown.
Grand Fork says, we are into the back half of
hot talk now, but we've got a lot of great
things still to discuss, including you and E soccer. They're
opening their Summer League season at home at Bronson Field
Thursday afternoon and Sunday afternoon head coach Henrik Son as
(00:22):
his soccer team primed and ready to go for some
league play. Good evening, Henrik, great to have you along
with us, and I know you didn't have any games
as you were using that week to kind of prime
the pump, so to speak. And you're diving right into
it with the Denver Pioneers, a program that has a
pretty good track record in the Summer League. They have
(00:43):
a belief and there's something to be said about that.
I mean you have to tip your cap and say, yeah,
maybe it's a little cocky, and rightfully so, but they've
earned it. And so what a challenge right out of
the gates here at Bronzon Field on Thursday afternoon. Your
team must be just looking so forward to it.
Speaker 2 (00:59):
Yeah, absolutely, you know, we we've been looking forward to this.
That's why you play non conference. You're getting ready for conference,
So we're ready for the challenge. You want to compete
with the best. So we started out the gate with
the probably the favorite. It's always between them and then
SESU does are like the two powerhouses within the conference.
So we're getting it out of the way early, which
is a good thing. But you know, I've said it before,
(01:19):
we're playing in North Dakota like we're at home, and
we have to make it uncomfortable for them. They might
come in and think, oh, it's going to be an
easy game, but they're no easy games if you play
in North Dakota. That's the attitude we gotta have. We
got to go out there and take it at them
from the first minute and show that believe and that
we can do it too. And you know, everyone has
a plan until you get smacked in the mouth.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
So so where you know, in my I've actually had
a you know, over the years, had a chance to
broadcast a few of the U and D Denver matches,
and what always seem to me when we played when
North Dakota played Denver is that they always felt like
they had a way to control the midfield. They had
some skilled players that could just kind of get the
(01:59):
game going the way that they wanted to, pulling the strings,
as we'd say in the soccer business. And and I
mean you have players that can pull the strings too
in the midfield, so it could be a very interesting
game just in that part of the pitch alone.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yeah, I think it's gonna be a fun game to
watch because it's gonna be two teams that are not
solely relying on the physical aspect of the game. You know,
there's some teams in this conference it's more about like
playing a long ball and competing and just winning individual battles.
That is a key component to be successful. But I
think both teams look into play soccer, so we're trying
to get possession, to keep possession, to retain it, to
(02:35):
build through the midfield. I think both teams do it.
So it will be very fun and good game to watch.
But at the end of the day, it comes out
who wants it more, because that's what soccer's about. You know,
you can get all the x's and o's, you can
have the best game plan in the world, but if
the basics of that willingness to go all in and
giving it you all isn't there. The best to the
best game plan in the world doesn't help. So we
got to be ready to have the basics down.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
You know, I was talking with coach Tupac about you know,
when I look at the some of league in volleyball,
there's a lot of nights where it's gonna be if
you if you got it that night, you're gonna maybe
walk out with a win. It's that type of depth
throughout the league. The soccer is appearing that way right now.
I mean a lot of good soccer teams, but I
don't know necessarily that there's one that overshadows everybody. On
(03:19):
everybody's day, if you're dialed into the right details, you
have a great chance to send no matter who's in
something league playing.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
And you know that's that's the The league is very
consistent from top to bottom. And you're right like, on
a good day, you can beat anyone. On a bad day,
you'll lose to anyone. Yeah, And that's that's the way
it is. So we we got to make sure that
we have a good day on Thursday and on Sunday.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
So when we talk a little bit about we talked
about Denver, I know that players were and coaches were
focused in on the only game that can matter right now,
it's the Thursday game. But just for the fans purposes,
what does Omaha look like coming in on Sunday at one?
What type of team do they bring to Grand Forks
this year?
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Yet a very different than lasted. I lost a lot
of starters, but they've done a great job down there.
You know, they got good results. That just tied Colorado State,
who was ranked the week before. Right there's there's still
playing a fourth W three. You know, very possession ori
in it. I got some big hits in the back.
Still a very very good team, like like Oma is
one of none of these teams that that's just solid quality.
(04:16):
And so it's gonna be very tough opening weekend in conference,
but we're ready for it.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Well, you know, you look at one of the things
that you talked about training last week, getting healthy. Uh,
last week I was wondering if you guys use technology.
I mean, obviously you use video and you you even
video practices and you dive into all the details. But
now there's things that track how far people run, not
(04:40):
only within a game, but in practice. You you know
exactly how much you know, how how much pitch and
how much yardage and mindage people are covering within the
context of a game, what kind of shift they're putting in.
That's all there to your fingertips as a coaching staff, right.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Yeah, absolutely, So we have vests and you have a
little GPS track you can put in the back, so
you turn it on and it will track every movement
you have. So we'll get how far you run, how
fast you run, sprint distance, you know, even the acceleration,
who's the fastest top speed, and you know the distance
you jog you ran full sprint. We can see it
all and you know, we got to sync it with
a computer afternoon. We can analyze the data, which is
(05:17):
very telling, especially for load management. You know, if you
have the quick turnaround from a Thursday game to Sunday game.
We have players they run up to seven miles in
a game. That's a lot and there's a lot of
sprinting involved. It's not just a jock. Is a very
starting stop go game. So we see if you put
in a shift like that, we gotta change how we
train you the next two days because we got to
manage the load. You got to make sure you recover properly,
(05:39):
and that is just invaluable having this data. And there's more.
We could do a deep dive. If there's more technology,
you can do a life you can sit there with
a computer. We don't have that yet, but in the
future we're looking at getting it. You can literally see
when is the player hitting the red zone, what is
her max and once she's there, okay, now we're losing
a little bit of the you know, the spring in
her step like, and we can off and give our rest.
(06:01):
So there's so much technology out there, and I think
from where we're at, we're just scratching on the surface.
Like the people do that full time for the professional
clubs out in the world.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
One other thing, now, obviously you've been around the program here,
so you've been through the Summit League. You know a lot,
do you do You have a pretty good insight and
know these coaches that coach throughout the league that you
have relationships and have gotten to know some of them
kind of know how they like to get their teams.
I mean, obviously there's the scouting, but do you have
(06:29):
relationships that have kind of been established here now with
some of the other head coaches around the league that
that you learn as you go in a head role. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Absolutely. You know, we're all friendly, we're all doing the
same thing at the end of the day, and we're
competitive people, so.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
We want to beat each other.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Oh yeah, we're gonna be gonna be competitive on the field,
but I think we have a really good culture within
the league that we're cool after right, That's okay, That's
how it should be in sports. You can compete really
hard on the field, but after it's it's done, we're
good now. And I think there's a good way in
the league and so we get along pretty well and
it's a good used to be in there regard well.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
The league is tough and it's gonna be super fun
to see how North to Go to Soccer navigates it.
It starts Thursday afternoon at three, get out to Bronson Field,
Chance saying, turn it into a European type of atmosphere,
make it fun for you and e soccer. Make it
tough on the opponent in a in the right way,
in the right way, but we're gonna have fun out
of Bronzon Field on Thursday. Thanks for this and good
(07:22):
luck this week.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
Thank you appreciate thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (07:24):
All right, Henrick Sown everybody, you and d Soccer Bronson
Field Thursday at three against Denver, Sunday at one against Omaha.
As we continue now, we're gonna take a quick break.
We'll come back and we'll talk some running. But it's
the best kind. It's the running wind and resulting in
a win. We've got a special guest for you. We've
got head coach Tom Scott from cross Country. Stay with us.
(07:47):
The Hawk Talk Show from the five oh six Pub
downtown cran Forks will continue next all across the Fighting
Hawks Radio Network.
