Speaker 1 (00:00):
And we welcome you back here to yet another segment
of our Tuesday night edition of Hawk Talk. I'm Paul Rolston,
glad to have you along with us all across the
Fighting Hawks Radio network tonight. I want to thank Jennifer
for engineering at our flagship studios and want to welcome
all our listeners who are listening out there. And if
you miss any segment tonight, you can always go back
(00:21):
and search on the iHeartRadio app and iHeartRadio dot com
and you can look back and find any conversation we've
had with tonight's coaches. We've talked with head coach Eric
Schmidt about you and d's football game against Northern Iowa.
We'll talk to you Indie volleyball here with Jesse Tupac
still to come you and d men's golf coach Todd
Schaeffer slated to join us here this evening as well.
(00:42):
It's now time my pleasure to finally get those coyotes
and that bugaboo behind us, and they finally went down
on Thursday night. Head coach Jesse Tupacs Fighting Hawks took
care of that. Welcome to the program, Coach Tupaca. One
in one start to the Summit League campaign. Boy, another
win to ticket in a stretch of wins until it
(01:03):
kind of came to an end Saturday night. But let's
talk about the Thursday night win here. But before we
do that, in case you haven't heard, and sometimes you
don't always have the social media like I do, boy,
am I ever on social media? Paige Barber, by the way,
has been named the some of League Offensive Player of
the Week, and we would like to congratulate Page Barber,
(01:25):
the senior outside hitter for the University of North Dakota
Fighting Hawks. What did she have twenty three on Thursday night,
which was I think an all time high for her.
So I don't know if her arm ever gets tired,
but she just keeps swinging away and she was at
a ridiculous clip that night as well. So coach Tupac
tell us a little bit about getting over the hump
against the Coyotes to start that Summa League season, because, boy,
(01:48):
you guys got out of the gates. I would assume
like if you would have said, I dreamt it, and
that's almost the way it played out here in the
early couple of sets of that match.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Yeah, I mean again, shout out to Page she did
a phenomenal job ffensive player that we cal word very
well deserved. She had twenty three kills and nine digs,
both of which were career highs for her, and she
did a nice job. And there were times that she
was coming up and she was ripping balls out of
the front row, she was ripping balls out of the
back rounds like she was defying gravity out there.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
I mean she was floating basically in some of those
back roll opportunities. Because absolutely, you know, I always feel
like if you're able to attack O to the back
row effectively, We've seen that over the last decade and
change with certain players that have had that skill set.
Not an easy one, but when you do have it,
it really can can change some things. The way that
teams can kind of anticipate defending you, and it really
(02:35):
kind of throws a wrench into everything, I understand.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Yeah, Page has been really good in every phase of
the game so far this year. And I think the
other thing that really made a big difference, you know,
other than the fact they're like, look, our team has
been continually getting better every single week and every single
day and every single match, and so this was just
a continuation of the growth that we've had this far.
But I think the other big impact that happened was
that Avia Galvin, one of our freshman middle blockers, she
missed all of non conference plays. You had a small injury,
(02:59):
and then she was back and the Matchica in South
Dakota was her first ever official career start for US.
And the reality is that before she went down, before
she got hurt, she was the most potent offensive option
in our gym. And so when we were able to
add her back into the lineup, we knew that that
was going to change things. And one, nobody had any
film on her, so we had no idea what was
coming right right, And yeah, two, having her in the
(03:21):
lineup means that you have to give her more attention.
You have to give her more focus, and then you
have to choose, am I gonna stop Ava or am
I going to stop Page And you can't do both
at the same time. And so when they're in the
front row together.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
And you can even have Kamani in that whole type
of feel too, so it becomes almost like there's more
prongs to this. Basically that you're throwing at opposing defenses
that are like how were we handling this system right now?
And and Ava, I think she mentioned that she was
a little anxious, a little bit to settle in, but
I think you went to her almost like right away
(03:54):
in that in the in the.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
First set, first play, first play of the game, it was, Hey,
no one knows what she looks like, set her the ball.
She's going to get a kill and then she's going
to rotate off because that's just the way our rotation works.
But then she's gonna be feeling really good about herself.
And look, she's still not one hundred percent, but her
at eighty percent is still incredibly potent. And so we've
even seen today in practice like she's feeling better than
she was feeling yesterday and Monday she was feeling better
than she was on Saturday. And so she's going to
(04:16):
continue to keep getting better and feel more and more
comfortable within our systems and within our lineup and how
we're scouting our opponents.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Yeah, Ava Gelvin is a freshman order the state of California.
She had seven kills on twelve or no. Seven kills
on eighteen swings, hitting just over two seventy five on
that Thursday night win again South Dakota. What do you do?
You feel her netplay will be pretty good as far
as the block is concerned too. She's got a good
(04:43):
way about her. I mean, she's got really good length
as well.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yeah, she's long, and she's really a really athletic and
you know she had to lower about her injury, so
that's slowing her down a little bit still just right now.
But we already saw this week that she's making more
dynamic and more explosive moves as of walker, and we
know that's an area that she can absolutely impact the game.
So as she gets healthier and she gets more comfortable
in our lineup, it's just going to be a bigger
handful for our opponents to deal with it.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Well, I wanted to talk to you a little bit
about one more thing about that match on Thursday at
the Betty Great Feel, But I will tell you the
anxiety in set four. I got angry there for a
second because I think we North Dakota got out to
like a four point lead at one juncture early in
that set. They had just taken Set three out of
(05:24):
the break, and I'm like, okay, let's establish Set four,
see what happens. And then all of a sudden, here
they come, and now they're pushing it to one or
two point advantage, and I'm thinking, oh, darn it, we
had the window. Maybe that's some growth on your team
the way they handled that, because momentum swings and volleyball,
as much as any sport, maybe if not more, can
(05:46):
really affect things. And your team just was able to
weather it and still figure out a way to get
it done in that four set.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
Yeah, like in volleyball, runs are going to happen. Teams
are going to score multiple points in a row on
both sides of the ball, and that's just a part
of the sport. And we know that Southcote is good.
They won the conference tournament last year. They have been
a perennial conference champion and perennial NCAA tournament team for
the last ten years, and so we knew that they
weren't gonna quit and they weren't gonna stop just because
they were down two sets to one, right, And ultimately
we went into that set and we had five true
(06:15):
freshmen playing for us on the court in the fourth set.
But it started and it ended with Izzy mncormick, one
of our seniors who shout out to Izzy. She just
passed one hundred career aces. Again, she passed a thousand
career digs. So she's doing a really nice job. Yeah,
shout up Busy. But that fourth set started with a
five point serving run from Izzy and it ended with
a four point serving run from Izzy. And it's not
(06:36):
just what she's doing from the service line, but it's
what she sets up everybody to do from a block
and defense and transition offense perspective. And so she goes
and gets people off the net, and then that allows
our freshmen to go do what they do and be
really effective in the defense in their transition phase at
the game.
Speaker 1 (06:49):
Wow, Okay, now I'm gonna take us down just briefly.
We're not gonna dwell on this. It's tough going down
to Fargo. Didn't have it maybe quite the way you
wanted it, And maybe that it's a learning experience about
how this Missouri or the summonth league is going to
challenge you night in night out. That you got to
remain in the zone. You can't have the drop off,
(07:11):
you can't lose the focus on the details. Little things
like that in in an atmosphere like that can really
turn against you and you just couldn't quite get a
foothold in that match. I don't think.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Yeah, you know, obviously NBC is a very good program.
Every team in the Sun League is a very good program.
So you're never gonna get a night off, You're never
gonna get a team where you just get to like
close your eyes and win a game. Right Playing in
Fargo is it particularly an interesting challenge as well, just
especially when they're in homecoming weekend and it's a sold
out crowd and you've got all of these different variables
coming in and at the end of the day, we
just didn't play our best volleyball. We played really medium
(07:43):
volleyball across the board, and nobody was particularly egregiously bad
and nobody was pticularly egregiously great. But the cool thing
was that we played pretty medium volleyball and we were
really competitive through all three of those sets. And so
this is what we look like when we're not playing
our best. When we're at our best, we can compete
with anybody in this team or anybody in this conference.
And we saw that on Thursday night, and we learned
a nice lesson on Saturday. But ultimately, like we've seen
(08:05):
that this team, every time they have a setback, they
respond and they push even harder and they get better.
And the last two days of practice have been the
best two days of practice we've had all year, and
so it gets us really excited for this weekend.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
One of the things that maybe the fan base would
think about here is because you have players from all
over the country and you know, maybe they don't have
the background of the rivalry coursing through their blood growing
every moment through them and don't have it, but from
wherever they're from, there probably was a huge rivalry that
(08:34):
they could probably latch onto and it's really no different.
So I'm assuming they're well have a fair idea of
what they're kind of getting themselves into when it's those
two teams on the floor.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
Yeah, I mean, first and foremost, we do have athletes
from all over the country and all over the world. Yeah,
and I think that is only a credit to how
amazing Grand Forks in und are and how we can
attract athletes from everywhere. Oh, that's such a special place, right.
I think the other piece of that is that these
athletes commit to this program because the community, because of
the history of this program and because they want to
do something really, really special, and so they know the
(09:05):
importance of the North Yota State match. They also know
the importance of the South could Have match and the
Omaha match and the Denver match and the Saint Thomas match,
and every single team in his conference is legit and
it's gonna give us a lot of trouble if we
don't prepare for it appropriately. But I think the cool
thing is that they've really wrapped their arms on this
idea of like, we get to go out every night
in battle, and that's why we play sports. It's not
fun to win twenty five zero, whichever side of that
(09:26):
you're on. No right to go to the wire point
for point with our opponents playing at their best and
we're playing at our best.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
It's way more satisfying when you have to scrap in
order to earn that win like you did on Thursday night. Absolutely,
and there's something to be said about that. Now you
go on the road Omaha coming up on Thursday night
down in Omaha, and then you stay on the road
with Kansas City for a Saturday afternoon tilts against the Ruse,
what do you know about these programs? And obviously, as
(09:53):
you mentioned everybody's about the same. Are they similar systems?
Are they are different? Are they quite a disparity of
what you're going to see from one night to the next,
or how is that gonna work?
Speaker 2 (10:02):
Yeah, Omaha and Kansas City the two teams that were
in the sum League tournament finals two years ago, two very
good programs and two to programs that run very fast offenses,
which is awesome because so do we, and so we're
three of the most similar teams in the confidence in
terms of the way that we run our offense and
the way that we played defense. And so it's really
gonna come down to who can execute better and in
type moments and who can stay connected.
Speaker 1 (10:22):
No, that's interesting. So basically, it's a little bit if
there's one weekend where you're looking in the mirror a
little bit, Yeah, it's it's these two teams that you're
gonna face on Thursday and Saturday.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
Absolutely. Yeah, we're gonna go out and we're gonna play
the same style of volleyball, and that's gonna come out,
does it. Who's going to be more calm in the
chaos and who's gonna be able to stay together in
tough moments?
Speaker 1 (10:40):
In today's day and age. What's a bus trip like
on a volleyball bus trip? What's that like?
Speaker 2 (10:44):
Well, it's it's what like six and a half hours
to Omaha on a bus and then we'll go to
Kansas City on Friday, and then after our Matchkins Kansas
City will bust back home. But we'll have some really
nice barbecue on the bus with us. So it should
get we get it.
Speaker 1 (10:55):
We way had a win, We get some barbecue. We
enjoy that. Yeah, exactly, that's good. Well, I tell you what,
that Thursday night kept me on the edge of my seat.
And certainly you know, I know that these ladies have
been working their tails off as they've you know, strung
together a number of wins here recently and want to
start a new streak here if we get on the
(11:16):
road against Omaha Kansas City. No, it's a big challenge,
but look forward to it. Save travels this week.
Speaker 2 (11:20):
Good luck, Thanks Paul. We're really proud of our team
for the work that they've done. And look, we've gone
five was out to go to three years in a row,
and this was them finally getting over that hump. And
there's some other teams that we've got to do the
same thing with and so we're gonna take it one
day at time and face the team that's in front
of us and continue to be great at what we do.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
All right, Head Coach Jesse Tupac, everybody you Indeed, volleyball.
Big weekend for the Fighting Hawk ladies on the road
in some league play at Omaha Thursday at Kansas City
on Saturday afternoon. When we return, we're going to talk
about the winners of the Zach Johnson Invite in West
and Mooine, Iowa last week. We'll talk to you and
(11:54):
he men's golf. You're gonna have an opportunity to see
him in the backyard here coming up on Thursday afternoon,
so we'll talk a little bit about that with the
head coach and Hall of Famer himself, Todd Schaefer will
be joining the broadcast when we return to the five
h six Pub downtown Grand Forks. All across the Fighting
Hawks Radio network
