Speaker 1 (00:00):
And we welcome you back here on Hawk Talk. This
is our final segment of the night, and I'll tell
you we've been very fortunate here to start twenty twenty
five with such a great cast of coaches to join
us and Tim Hennessy, and of course with his award
tonight being awarded earlier today. We appreciate Tim taking some
time out from celebrating and Yepp, this is how you celebrate.

(00:25):
This is exactly how we should celebrate. Exactly get out
to the five h six pub. And of course, if
you're not tracking on this, i'll tell you again he's
the North Dakota sportscast of the year and that's pretty
cool stuff. So we appreciate he's uh, he's joining us,
and we were we're gonna puff out our chests for you,
even though you're gonna humbly accept it. So congratulations. I

(00:47):
appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (00:48):
But I kind of kind.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
Of well, that's okay, let us do it.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
You do you.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
But Mallory Bernhardt joins us at you'll be women's basketball.
Everybody great?

Speaker 2 (00:59):
Say is that fun to see Saturday night? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (01:04):
What the rules did you get out of Kansas City? Okay?
I didn't even know how that went.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
It was really really icy. Yeah, we spent a little
bit of extra time. We were stopped for about three
hours on the interstates. Yeah, yeah, it was. It was
not great. We were busting back and we were trying
to get out of there as quick as we can.
But between having to get back to the hotel and
shower up and all that stuff, we we got behind
some accidents. And it was perfectly fine. We had a

(01:31):
you know, our bus driver was great and we were
safe and all of that, but a couple accidents ahead
of us had to stop.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Sure, you know, I could tell there was frustration, a
little bit bewilderment a little bit. On Thursday night listening
to the post game, I get it. I get it
because it was like, what does the old song go?

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Like?

Speaker 1 (01:53):
Second verse, same as the first, basically, you know, as
I'm Henry the eighth I am I am basically, And
and to do it to turn around in short order
to get to Saturday. Flush it play well playing a
game where they're just gonna throw all sorts of pressure
at you because that's what the rules do.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yeh.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
And yeah, really incredible job by your team. You must
have been puffing out the chest yourself a little bit
on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Huh, Yeah, I mean it was. It was certainly a
huge key to that game. And then you know Kansas
City Omaha. Kansas City are one and two in our
league right now for US turnovers, Oral Roberts coming right
behind them at three. But yeah, so those are two
teams that we know that that's that's what they live on.
That is exactly what they do. And so taking care
of the ball was of course a huge part of

(02:42):
you know, preparing for that game and and how we
were gonna you know, handle those games. Obviously we struggled
with that against Omaha, and I think, yeah, we we
had to really quickly turn the page because you really
don't have the opportunity to just drop your head and
be sad about it, and you know, you just kind
of got to figure it out. And you know, they
might have done it in two different ways. You're gonna

(03:03):
get pressured, honestly, the on on ball pressure is probably
heavier with Kansas City. Yeah, but I thought our team
adjusted really well, and you know, our coaching staff, you know,
our coaches made some good points and we were able
to you know, free Jossy up quite a bit, you know,
set a lot of early ball screens for her, help
her get a little bit of space, and really kind

(03:26):
of dictate who was in those decision making positions, and
she obviously does a phenomenal job at that.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
I was gonna say that maybe the other takeaway to
end the weekend was just having some poison composure to
make a player too, to seal out a game. And
I thought Walker to Murrs, certainly down the stretch you've
talked about kind of what she's meant to come into
the program and woy to have that moment I think
was it a rebound and then getting to the line, just

(03:53):
critical to have somebody like that on the floor for
you well.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
For sure, and there was quite a few of those obviously,
but yeah, she got an offensive rebound that that felt
like it sealed it. Maybe, But no, I mean there's
a lot of people you should we make eleven to
eleven free throws in the fourth quarter. I mean those
are all kind of those game winning plays. We rebounded
really well in that fourth quarter. Those are those game
winning plays. So they you know, they all kind of

(04:17):
come you know to a head in the last you know,
minute or two. But really it's the course of that
fourth quarter and then truly the whole second half. You know,
the first half, we felt like there were two things
we were struggling with Kansas City. It was rebounding. They
were getting us a little bit on the offensive glass,
and then inside they started to try and kind of
attack us inside. And and I think that, you know,

(04:38):
the team adjusted really really well, and quite honestly, we
made some in game adjustments about two minutes into how
they were attacking our zone, and our team did a
great job communicating their way through it. And so yeah,
to the point of obviously turning the page from turnovers,
but even just the focus it takes to practice something
all day on Friday and then within about two minutes
have to make another quick adjustment, the team figuring that out.

(05:01):
Really well done by them.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Awesome wow, you know. Getting back home though, and and
this is always the thing with coaches and how they
get a read on their team. Some teams are like, Okay,
we won one. We all feel good now, and tell
me about the character of this team, a little bit
of the identity of it. Was it a get back
to work. I thought it was a really interesting thing.

(05:22):
Kira Pemberton said, you know, I was tired at the
end of Saturday. You know, it's a it's a tough
road weekend, but you know, you just have to fight
through it and grind to see the game out. And
I thought that was a great answer. But that's almost
the way it is even to the next week, because
it's a short turnaround and you don't have many days
and it's just basically you just have to see things out.

(05:43):
And that even includes because you know, Oral Roberts is
a high level team. I mean they say, that's who
you have in front of you. What a what a
great opportunity to get it to the Betty here on
Thursday night.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Yeah, no doubt. I mean when when you look at
Oral Roberts, they've competed at about as high a level
as you can can in their non conference schedule and
then they're playing South Dakota State, you know, down to
the wire, and if if that's everyone's measuring stick in
the league, then hopefully that gives you an indication. No,
they're they're an incredibly balanced team. Incredibly balanced team. They
got five players double figures, one of them comes off

(06:15):
the bench, and and yes they're one of those teams
that again wants to turn you over, wants to make
you play fast. One an incredibly athletic and long team.
And so yeah, we don't have the opportunity to sit
back and say, oh, thank goodness that weekends over. We
do have to quickly turn the page and prepare for
another really difficult and probably our most difficult challenge to

(06:36):
this point. But that's the league, is it. The confidence
factor has got to be a little higher right after
that one and get bones, I think absolutely, especially from
the taking care of the ball. The ball security standpoint.
Kansas City was number two in our league, and you
know our oral roberts of turning people over exactly, and

(06:57):
so I think that should give everybody on our team
the confidence that, hey, we can we can take care
of it against this kind of pressure. We can do
it night in a night. It does take forty minutes
of focus, forty minutes of being locked in.

Speaker 1 (07:09):
And you have Denver coming up on Saturday afternoon. You've
had such a wonderful, interesting relationship with that team over
the years, so I'm kind of mad that it's going
to be happening when when I'm well, actually we play
that night, So I should be able to watch that
one and listen to it, so that that's always an
interesting battle with the Pioneers.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
Hey, I blame hockey. They're the ones that they're the
ones that started the Denver rivalry. No, it's been a
heat that's right down the aisle from the hockey hocker room.

Speaker 1 (07:38):
Yeah it is is.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
Yeah, No, it's it's been a heated rivalry and we've
had some really good battles and Denver's probably had one
of their best seasons in the last several and so, yeah,
they're just two very different teams. You know, Omaha is
just sorry, Oral Roberts is just incredibly athletic, and not
that Denver is not athletic, but they just do things
in a very different way where they're very much about

(08:01):
chucking up threes, Oral Roberts very much about getting downhill.
And so weeah two very different game plans when it
comes to both of them. But there's a lot of
heat when it comes to the bos.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
To prepare your game. Absolutely well. We appreciate you, because
we talked about this going into the second half that
your schedule is running right up along this show, so
we appreciate you swinging on over afterwards, and we appreciate
you dropping in and we know what a big weekend
it is to get back in front of the home fans.
Congratulations on picking up a tough road win on Saturday.

(08:34):
Let's see if we can't get on a little run
for these Fighting Hawks ladies, and step by step appreciate this.
Have a great weekend this weekend.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
