Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back downtown Grand Forks the five o six pubby
inside Hugo's Peer Market. This is Tuesday Night's Hawk Talk
Darren Lukerdton Hennessey, and the head coach of our favorite
hockey team joining us tonight, Brad Barry after a weekend
sweep after Miami Oxford and beautiful Oxford, Ohio. Who wouldn't

(00:24):
want to go to I figured it.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Out takes half the time to get to the airport
as it does to fly back here.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Yeah, it's uh, it's a track. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (00:35):
Yeah, you know, I've said that for years that they've
got an Indivision one football program, Division one basketball program,
Division one hockey program, but they don't am the airport
big enough bring a plane in.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
No, I know, it doesn't make sense. No, but it's
a great little campus and.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Yeah, oh yeah once you get there, yeah, in a
much easier drive back after a couple of wins, Yeah
for sure.

Speaker 3 (00:55):
I know. We got on the bus and there's a
couple of guys on our team that don't enjoy kind
of the up and down, windy roads kind of stuff,
especially if you're sitting in the middle of the bus
and you can't see out the window. So there they
were a little green in the gills when they got
off the bus there on Thursday.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
And I mentioned it was just good to see smiles
on the plane coming home.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Yeah, you know, that was good.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
As it needed a couple of good results and yeah,
kind of got it the right way too, I.

Speaker 3 (01:19):
Thought, Yeah, for sure. You know, the encouraging part is,
you know, you go to the Loot and you get
two wins on the road, and you go to Miami
you get a couple of wins on the road, and
that's always tough. And the NCAC winning on the road
to begin with, let alone sweeping, and it was good
for morale and momentum, and yeah, looking forward to one
more weekend here now.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Yeah, you know we talked about it, Darren and I
had that you know, if you take some of the
guys off some of these teams that are way up
in the rankings whatever, which doesn't mean anything, but you
take some of those dudes off of those teams, and
are they going to be able to flourish? You guys
have flourished playing those games. I mean you had a

(01:55):
highly regarded incoming class. Yeah, and now they're showing it.

Speaker 3 (01:59):
And Meg gotta and they have to. And I think
that's the by product or the benefit of experienced guys
out of the lineup that they're getting more ice time
than they probably normally would early on. Not to say
they wouldn't get in the second half, but you know,
it's uh, you know, they're jumping with both feet in
right now, and they're doing well, and they're contributing all
the all the young guys, whether they're forward or d
and that's a big thing, and that'll pay Davids.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Yeah, when you had, yeah, three guys, three freshmen on defense,
two sophomores and Dave Montcomery there's a forward playing d. Yeah,
Andrew Straut to talk about him a little bit. I
see a lot of good things, oh yeah, but I
also see where he's used to doing some things that
he's not gonna get away with at this level.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
Yeah, for sure. I think you know, he's played three
years of junior hockey, and you know, especially your last year,
you probably can get away with some things being an
older guy and try and trying different things. But you know,
I thought he gave us a big boost coming back
in our lineup. You know, he he's not afraid to
play he's he's assertive, he makes good read, he passes
a puck well. And the goal he scored the other

(03:02):
day at night on Saturday was amazing. You know where
he jumped up in the play, he kicked out the puck,
he got it back and then just have the patients
to outwait the goaltender to go around him. It was
a huge goal, I call it.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
He gave him a little how shit going on?

Speaker 1 (03:15):
Well and just in the end the awareness too, because
he was just about to look behind him and like,
are you serious that there's nobody here? In just that
awareness to know that he could make a move.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Yeah, one hundred percent. And you know the thing I
like about him too, he plays with an edge like
he plays. He's assertive, he's he's aggressive player, and sometimes
he takes a penalty or two and that you know,
you got to rein that in a little bit, the discipline.
But at the end of the day, I'd rather have
a guy that's a sertive and an aggressive and not
afraid to make plays because he can always rain back

(03:43):
the aggressiveness.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
You were rolling the four lines, which included an all
freshmen line, Talk about those guys Attle.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
They were outstanding. Uh, Kate Litler who was playing in
on on the wing, you know we had.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Was in the middle.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
Yeah, Kate was in the middle, but he he was
playing wing to start the season here. We needed a
centerman here with a few guys out of the lineup
with injuries, so he played center. He's always played center
growing up in youth hockey and junior too, so he's
experienced with that. But then we had Cody Crowl on
one wing and we had Dalton andro on the other.
And those guys were they were in sync together all weekend,

(04:17):
playing the right way, playing a simple game of north game.
They drove possession, They gave us momentum. They scored a
couple of goals on Friday night. They were good on
Saturday as well. And when you can have the luxury
of throwing another so called forth line. But you know,
three freshmen out there and not worried about, you know,
getting mismatched out there, they did a good job of
gaining momentum force well.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
They tried. Miami tried to match up their top guys,
yeah with those guys, and didn't work out for.

Speaker 3 (04:44):
Them, No, it didn't, you know, And and like I said,
they're very responsible, They advanced pucks, they're good defensively, and
and they're hard to play against. And all three of them,
even Cody, Like you know, you got Littler and Dalton
and are huge guys. Yeah, but Cody's not as big,
but he plays huge and uh, but they were all connected.
They played well. They made some great plays. There was
a back door play too that that they just missed

(05:06):
out on. I think Kate Lutler had a back door
play that. Uh, they were cycling down low and but
they they generated a ton of them and also scored
a couple of big goals.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
I was telling Tim we were walking in the rank
and al it goes, did you see the analytics for
for those guys last night? And I started laughing and
he looked at me, like, what, you don't need analytics
for those three guys.

Speaker 3 (05:25):
There.

Speaker 1 (05:25):
There's one setting there and they that's all they know.

Speaker 3 (05:28):
And it's great, yeah for sure, And and and that's
the beauty of it when when when you can throw
those guys out there against any line and not worry
about getting this match. So, uh, yeah, they're back together again.
They had a good couple of days of practice here
and we're looking forward to them on the weekend here.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
It's got to be big on their confidence level.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
Sure, you know. Uh, and for Dalton Andrews scores first goal,
and you know Cody Krole got one, you know, his
first goal the other day. And and and you know
Andrew Strafman got his first goll on the blue line too.
So those guys, uh, like I said, they're having some
I'm some successfull getting a lot of ice time.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Well, your freshmen figured in on all your goals last weekends.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
That's tough to do because it's the majority of our lineup.
They're mostly freshmen in our lineup. But that's good. Yeah,
it is.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
I mean it's like I said, as far as the
future goals, yeah, it really helps.

Speaker 3 (06:18):
Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 2 (06:19):
And now they're contributing now. Yeah, which as opposed to
you could say, well, you know, this would be good
for them in the future, but they're doing it now.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Yeah, they're doing it now. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
But it was a highly regarded class, Yeah it was.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
But you know how that goes. You know, Jonathan Taves
came in here highly regarded. He had two goals in
the first half of the season, right, and then he
had one and on they score fifteen in the second half,
So even the best, the one percenters, it's tough college hockey.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
What kind of an adjustment is that for guys that
played mostly in the USHL or in the in the
PC league to play at the level of college hockey.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Is it a big adjustment?

Speaker 2 (06:55):
For the huge it's huge.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
It's huge the speed of the game and then the
heaviness of the game too, Like it's you know, you're
playing against grown men. You know you're playing them Vinji's
and court and uh men, catos that usually have older,
older teams, twenty three twenty four year old guys, and
so you know you're coming in as an eighteen year
old or a nineteen year old, You're you're still giving
up a bunch of years of experience and physical maturity

(07:18):
and uh and and I think there becomes an adjustment.
But now you're seeing the freshmen, they're getting acclimated to
the speed and the heaviness of the league right now.
So it takes a little bit, but at the end
of the day, there is a huge, huge adjustment.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
You know, it's fun because where Darren and I were situated,
you know, right on the goal line on the one end,
right but you're close, yeah, and sometimes being high up
at the real sure, which is a great spot. Yeah,
but you don't understand the physicality. Yeah, you to, You're
as close as we would you sat.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
Darren, yea is it's just everything is just amplified, quicker.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
And quicker, quicker and heavier.

Speaker 3 (07:58):
Yeah, you don't. Yeah, well, even on the bench, you know,
when you're standing on the bench behind the players too,
and you know somebody's tracking a guy and finishing a check,
or you know, even skating with a puck blowing by
somebody too. How fast it is out there, it's it's
it's amazing. And yeah, nothing replicates being at ice level
for sure.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
Yeah. When we talk about blowing by guys, how about
Jake Levanovich.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
Yeah he's doing it. Yeah, yeah, he's Yeah, he's taking
a huge step again, you know, and he's had to
you know, Bennetts, Molakou, Kaylea McDonald out, some of these
guys that that play would have played heavy minutes for
us out with injury that now you know, Uh, Jake
get gets his fair share of ice time, but with
a couple of older players out, he even gets more

(08:40):
now and he's he's done a great job of kind
of anchoring that decoor.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
Yeah, it's kind of interesting Friday night because I asked
him after the game, I said, did you did you
see He said, I heard him. Yeah, I heard him,
So I knew where he was going to be.

Speaker 3 (08:57):
Yeah, that that's got to be a given. Like you know,
just scored a bunch of goals in that right off
the dot there, and that's got to be that's got
to be even a no look territory right at the
end of the day. You've got to be predictable where
you just throw it over there in sashl one time that.

Speaker 2 (09:10):
It's just been uh. I mean we've seen yeah, him
grow just in this first half of the season.

Speaker 3 (09:17):
Yes, oh for sure. And I think you know there's
times when we went on the road to a couple
of different places or whatever, and you see the youth
in them a little bit as far as that. But
you know, I was just watching the practice, said to
the coaches today, like, this kid's this kid's going to
be a well he's already a good player, but he's
going to be an elite player in our league and
he's gonna he's gonna have a long pro career too.
Just because he he's got hockey sense, he skates extremely well.

(09:41):
He's you know those first two or three strides of separation,
you call it separation where you can just pull away
from from from players. He's got that, and you know
he's got to iron out a couple of just a
little things in this game. But that's what call it
hockey's for at the end of the day, and he's
got a break future and we're excited about his his
growth here if you and hang on to him, right, yeah,

(10:01):
for sure we'll get at least two years out of him,
maybe three.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
All right, One guy too, I wanted to touch on
since we're using some individuals. Max Swanson. I thought really
took a step last weekend. Oh maybe a by product
of the of the matchup, having a little more time
in space. Yeah, but at the end of the day,
he took advantage of it. What does a weekend like
that do for a kid like him? Now at this
point of the year, he well, Number.

Speaker 3 (10:21):
One, Darren, he's such a great kid and a great kid, quiet,
a little bit quiet, but just a professional. It works
extremely hard on and off the ice, and you know
he can never teach hockey sense. He's got hockey sense, man,
Like he's had three I think he had three assists
on Friday night. Yeah, Like at the end of the day,
the passes he made, well, he made that that pass

(10:41):
he was getting squeezed on the wall and he made
that pass to Andrew Straffman cutting through the neutral zone.
Like that's a big time play. And like I said,
his his hockey acumen and and his hockey sense or
off the charts. And now like he's feeling comfortable playing
the game. He's banged up, he's nicked up a little bit,
he's playing through it. But the end of the day
here that you're going to see that kid, just like

(11:02):
sash Or, grow exponentially.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Well, his mentality has got to be I mean, he's
got to be strong actually, because here's a kid came
from the USA. Joe was a player, Yeah, the year players,
all the accolades, right, Yeah, and you and some guys
you think they'd come in strutting.

Speaker 3 (11:20):
You never struck, but you know what it's all about
earning it. And I can still remember when we watched him, like, uh,
he played two years of junior hockey and Fargo. A
lot of the kids his age level were making the
national development program and he did go to the tryout camp.
He didn't make the team, so Fargo took him. They
didn't tender them, they took him. They brought him to camp.
He had a really good camp in the summer, and
we watched him and go, oh man, this kid's a

(11:41):
good player. But how's it going to translate? Well, you
know what, he had a really good first year. Second
year was off the charts, obviously, being that player of
the year and Junior Player of the Year and all
that stuff. But he had to earn everything he got.
A lot of those kids that go to the national program,
yeah they earn it or whatever, but they're already in
the limelight right away. He had to come and prove it,
like first of all, to make team, didn't get tentered,
had to make the team and then earn his way

(12:02):
up through junior hockey. So I love him, Like, he's
got great humility, He works extremely hard, and this kid
has got a bright future as well.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
He's pretty strong for a little guy.

Speaker 3 (12:12):
Oh he is. Yeah, Yeah, he's got a he's got
a strong basin foundation and uh, and he doesn't get
knocked off pucks very much and Uh. And he's a competitor.
He'll finish checks too.

Speaker 2 (12:22):
I had other people tell me that Ben Strandon, I thought.

Speaker 3 (12:25):
He's playing well. Watching him play, he's playing well, you
know what, And that comes from confidence. He supposedly was hurt, right, Yeah,
well yeah, he just came back and uh but for me,
he's feeling confidence. He's playing with sweat. Absolutely need him
to play like that and uh, and it's great to
see him.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
So this weekend, Saint Cloud comes in and you talked
about Swim. We don't know if they have their top
goaltender's really had a great.

Speaker 1 (12:48):
Season so far.

Speaker 3 (12:49):
Hope.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
I don't want to see anybody get hurt.

Speaker 3 (12:51):
No, well, you and me both, especially our team.

Speaker 2 (12:54):
Yeah, but that's a they're well, they're always going to
be a good team under pretlers.

Speaker 3 (13:01):
And I think, yeah, yeah, they are. They're they're they're
a different team this year. They're playing. They're playing really good.
Usually they're high flying offensive teams like knock on wood. Uh.
Their their penalty kill is at ninety ninety one percent
I think it is. Uh, they're say percentage with Pausha
Net's at like nine two nine or nine three to zero.
So they're good defensively, they haven't scored the goals like
they have in the past. Uh for the offensive production.

(13:24):
They did five score five the other night against Oma
on Saturday. But uh yeah, they they I think they're
they're more defensive now than they ever have and uh
and we're gonna have to find a way to offset that.

Speaker 2 (13:34):
They don't have all those little European guys.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
Yeah there's one the younger man yetna and is still there.
And uh yeah, how.

Speaker 2 (13:42):
Is there a power play because I mean.

Speaker 3 (13:44):
It's run out about twenty percent right now, and uh,
you know, and that's the other analytic that I look
at the last four to six games. How are they
on especially teams their power players running out about twenty percent,
But over the last four games they're five for nine,
So so they're clicking on the power play and their
penalty kill. I think there are ten of eleven kills,
so they're only giving up one goal and four games

(14:04):
on the kill.

Speaker 2 (14:05):
Well, their power play, especially in their rink on the
Olympics side, as much as fun to watch as watching
your power play.

Speaker 3 (14:12):
It's because they do it well. Yeah, well yeah, such
a big rink and it's tough to kill in that
rink and yeah whatever, but uh yeah, it's going to
come down to goaltending, especially teams again just like we
always say, you know, goaltending and and and you know,
defending well and uh and then especially teams of power play,
penalty killer are always huge factors in that.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
Well, let's get a couple this weekend.

Speaker 3 (14:32):
Let's go and then yeah, let's go two games before
the Christmas break.

Speaker 2 (14:35):
There you go. Thanks, thanks again, thanks coach Brad Berry.
Joining us in the hockey with Saint Cloud State this
weekend Friday Night seven seven Saturday night six O seven
against the Pesky.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
Husky Pesky Husky Pesky Husky as we liked. Yeah, yeah, that's.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
Four in a row already for you and d NC
and four on the road.

Speaker 1 (14:59):
Yeah, so let's.

Speaker 2 (15:00):
Welcome back to the roof this weekend for a big
week final.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
Yeah, one final time here in the first half where
in the heck?

Speaker 3 (15:06):
With that?

Speaker 2 (15:06):
Wow, then we get that. We'll get the Manitoba game right, Yes,
I always been my favorite.

Speaker 1 (15:14):
Get our legs back under us, and then uh, then
we will be off to Arizona State ten piers really yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
I'll be Dougne. We'll bring shorts out there. Right.

Speaker 1 (15:25):
I guess it's the that's the weekend when you're very
conscious calling home that it's cloudy, a little rainy, little rainy.

Speaker 2 (15:32):
Yeah, we're gonna talk some you and DA women's basketball
is Coach Melway Bernhard's team travels to Drake tomorrow night

you don't do women's basketball, will join us when we
come back with more from Hugo's Inside Hugo's Peer Market
