Speaker 1 (00:00):
And we welcome you back down down to the five
oh six Pub for more. Howk dock here and our
final go round of the season. North to Got To
Hockey picked up a road sweep to open up the
NC eight C playoffs in Omaha this past weekend, coming
back from a two goal deficit to close down the series.
There we go.
Speaker 2 (00:20):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (00:22):
So I turned it over to the guy that was
calling the game in his forty fifth season at the Helm.
Here's Tim Hennessey with Brad Berry, head coach Brad Berry. Everybody, Yeah,
it was.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
It was quite a weekend. I mean, your team showed
so much well they have through the particular to the
second half of the season, right, Brad, didn't surprise you
did it?
Speaker 2 (00:42):
Yeah for sure. And I think everybody gets caught up
in like the first half. First half, we had a
lot of guys out of our lineup chestimate, and I
think that's where it's paying dividends right now. All of
our young guys are contributing. Kate Littler we can say
about his game, and Sash Bover and you know Arender
Under a classman on defenseman, our freshman, our sophomoards, they're
all they're all doing a good job and they had to.
(01:03):
It was, you know, baptized by fire.
Speaker 3 (01:05):
Yeah, the the mood in the locker room has got
to be we can do this. We can sure, we
can do this because you've been behind many times. You're
behind six times, have come back in the third period
for you behind, that's uh, that's up on the melon.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Yeah for sure. And and you know, like I said,
it's been a different year this year. Last year, you know,
we got out of the out of the gates, out
of the blocks, and we won games, and we built
up our Paroise rankings to the point where we knew
we were in the tournament well ahead of time. And
now we have to we have to scratch and claw
the hard way in it. And our guys are believing.
You know, we're one weekend away from doing that. And
you know, like I said, the biggest thing for us
is no on Friday night, we're playing against a really
(01:43):
good opponent that we beat them last time in their rink,
and it doesn't happen a whole lot in Western Michigan
this year. And we know we have an opportunity and
a chance to move on. But again, our guys are
feeling it and they're throwing all all the chips in.
They're all in.
Speaker 3 (01:55):
I think there's two teams in college hockey that some
teams don't want to end up playing. You would be
one of them, Penn State to.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
Be the other. Yeah. Yeah, And I'm not familiar with
Penn State, but like I know with our I'm pretty
familiar with our team. And I think, you know, at
the end of the day, it doesn't matter what NCHC team.
It's a tough great even Omaha. Like, at the end
of the day, we had to go down there, and
that was a tough series, and I'm glad he didn't
have to go to three games, by the way, and
and uh yeah, I think it made us a better
(02:23):
coming out of there, knowing we can win a couple
of games on the road back to back, and that's
what we're gonna have to do this weekend.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Yeah, you talk about the young guys making a big contribution,
certainly this weekend, but they've been building towards that, don't you.
Speaker 2 (02:35):
Think for sure?
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (02:36):
Absolutely, you know, And when I look when I look
in retrospect at our season, and you know how we
had Cameron Berg and Luis Jammernick and Bennetts and Molak
and a lot of our key guys out early in
the season. Guys stepped up like Sasher Bover, like he
when we needed somebody to step up, he stepped up.
In the first half, he was our leading score he's
still our leading scorer. Like at the end of the day,
(02:57):
that guy, you know, he wants, he wants to be
the guy, and you know that's what you need. And
now you're seeing other guys like even Jayden Jubenville in
his game, he's not afraid to play that the goal
he scored to win it the other night was unreal
that you don't normally see in a freshman and it's
encouraging for the future.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Or Jayden, sometimes I cover my eyes with some of
the things at them, but that's freshman defense. That's a
tough league for freshman defenseman.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Yeah, And you know what, for every play that maybe
you're covering your eyes, I think your eyes go wide
open on three plays. So I'll take that any day
three to one. Like at the end of the day
that he makes really good plays. And and you know what,
if you would asked me early in the season if
Jaden Jubenville would be a key player in your lineup
at the end of the season. I would have probably
looked at you like, are you crazy. He's doing a
(03:42):
really good job. You know.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
You mentioned Sasha Bolbert. He scores goals. He had the
puck in the third paried minute and a half whatever
it was left on Saturday night, and you would think
a selfish guy would fire that puck on goalscat he
saw Jayden come down the middle and made it nice.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
But I think it goes to his hockey acumen or
his hockey sense. Like at the end of the day,
he saw a guy close in on him, it probably
maybe would have deflected the puck, got a stick on
a puck, and he ended up bringing the guy to him,
turned his body in some sort of way and snapped
it over to Jubenville. Like not many guys can make
that play and have the wherewithal to do it. And
he's an elite player and he's I know the Blackhawks
(04:24):
were there watching him. They were there after the game,
and I just made sure that he was thinking with
us for another year and they said yes, so absolutely. Well.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
The opponents here at XL Energy Center on Friday night
is Western Michigan. You've had some hard fought I mean,
I go back to the Friday game here in Grand Forks,
was a very tight game for a good portion of
that Friday game. This Saturday game at Lasson was an
unbelievable game of wilt by your team to see that
one out and find a way to win it. Correct
me if I'm wrong, if I don't describe Western Michigan correctly.
(04:56):
From what I've seen, I just see them. They're a
team that plays simple, kind of like what you talk
about so much with your team. They want to get
going north. Yeah, they don't hesitate, they don't go side
to side a lot. They just their philosophy is like
and so you got two teams that share a similar
philosophy I think going at each other on Friday.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Yeah, one hundred percent. And you know what we want
to do. We want to put the other team in
uncomfortable situations where you know, we're forcing them to turn
pucks over. And that's what they do. Like at the
end of the day, they force you into making mistakes
and if you overhandle pucks and if you don't get
pucks moving north, then you're playing in your end of
the rink. And that's where we got into trouble a
little bit with them. But then again, we simplify our
game on Saturday night in Western and we did a
(05:33):
better job of playing in their end or you know,
playing not in our end and making sure it's a
situation where we pressure their demon a little bit. So, yeah,
very similar teams there. They've got some heavy, hard guys
and uh that are older as well. And yeah, no,
we do, We absolutely do, you know. But at the
end of the day, when you got Paul Washy as
a grad that's six foot two and about two hundred
(05:55):
and twenty five pounds.
Speaker 3 (05:56):
And about twenty seven years old.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Twenty seven years old, and he's about six five in
the faceoff dot, you know, because he's mature physically mature.
You got to negate that by everybody digging in and
trying to you know, take away time and space.
Speaker 3 (06:09):
You know, the way you describe the way they played, Paul,
that's how the league plays well.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
For sure.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
There's no team in this league.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
Yeah it doesn't, you know what. And we talk about
this a lot, and we we even use that in
recruiting too, Like if you want to be an NHL player,
this is the league you want to go to you
know what, it might not be as high flying and
offensive that they think then the Big ten is, and
I think we're really offensive league. But I'll tell you what,
it's a battle test that it's a hard league. It's
an NHL type of league where if you can play
(06:37):
in this league and you do well, and you're a
really good player at a dominant player in this league,
you're probably gonna play in the NHL for a long
time to come because it replicates what the NHL is.
Speaker 3 (06:46):
Yeah, that's why I say. And it's not like I mean,
we can say that every week with every opponent you
have in this conference, they all play that you all
play the same for sure. Try to get the same
things going right exactly. You're one of the big things
was probably a month ago we talked about you want well,
you talked about all year you wanted a Goalay to
step up, yeah and grab the reins and let's go.
(07:09):
And TJ has done that, hasn't he?
Speaker 2 (07:11):
He absolutely has And it's ironic and thank thankfully that
he has done that and he will continue to do that.
But you know, you want somebody that that that's not
afraid of, somebody that wants that Hey, I want to
take this and I want to put guys on my back.
And when you think of some of the players over
the years that have done that, like Jeffy Panzer was
a guy like that when he was here, he goes,
get on my back, let's go, and I think him,
(07:32):
as you know, TJ kind of like that as well
as Hey, I want to I want to make sure
that my team is in a good spot here and
I'm going to do everything I can to lead.
Speaker 3 (07:40):
Which is interesting, isn't it for a guy who's been
at Northeastern then at Arizona State and he's all in
coming here, because sometimes those guys that come out from
other places are not always all I'm not just talking
about it for sure around the whole league.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Right, And you worry about that because the word that
comes to mind is rental, like they're a rental for
a year to win a championship. And he's not a rental.
He's all in and and what I love about TJ
is he's a professional day in and day out. How
he prepares himself, how he makes even the young guys
feel a sense of belonging around here. And I'll tell
(08:17):
you one thing, like he is a guy that's really
takes a high row too, Like he played in Northeastern
behind Devin Lewi, and then he went to Arizona State
and now he's finally here. A lot of times sometimes
there's some animosity or some resentment when you come from
a program, nothing but great things to say about those programs,
and and and very grateful that he had an opportunity
to play in those programs.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
Such a great kid.
Speaker 1 (08:37):
Yeah, well here's off the wall. I'm gonna get you
for one every year, it seems like for sure. So
the in the world of baseball, when you got a
pitcher running well, a lot of times guys just kind
of let him sit off by himself and be in
his own thoughts. Right, do you talk very much to
TJ right now that he's in his world and feeling
good about things. Is there a lot of or you
just let him be, you do his thing.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
A little bit of Paul, That's a good question, Like
you know, I think it depends on the personality. Sometimes
a guy doesn't like to say a lot or doesn't
have that personality. TJ is a very uh uh personal,
animated like he's a guy that loves to talk and
he loves to be engaged, so I think, you know,
I think more engagement is even good for him. Some
guys just don't even want to talk, to leave me
(09:19):
alone kind of thing. But he's a guy that loves
to be right in the middle of it. So we're
engaged with him. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:24):
Here's a good example of Friday night. Last Friday night,
after the game in Omaha. I you know, I said,
I want to talk to you know, coach Barry after
the game and TJ. And eventually they came on and
said TJ is getting some treatment for some kind.
Speaker 1 (09:43):
Or another, right, which is typical.
Speaker 2 (09:45):
Yeah, so you.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
Know, we went a different direction. But anyway, then we
get on the bus and he comes on the bus.
It comes right up and he says, hey, I'm sorry, man,
but I had to you know, you know, anytime you
don't have to.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
Yeah, but that's kind of kidding.
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Yeah, but that tells he wasn't ducking yet, you know. Yeah,
at the end of the day, that's what he is.
And I'll tell you he's such a caring and he
helps other people more than he helps himself, and he
helps help a lot. But I go back to a
story this summer the freshman coming in here. He has
no idea what northe Quota's about. And you're normally the
transfers that are here when you're trying to figure out themselves.
(10:20):
He's helping that the young guys figure it out. It's
it's it's unreal.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Wow, it's called the last Call. This exl Energy Center
in Saint Paul. Got to be excited to be a
a part of it and be You've been a part
of a lot of the stories and so this one's
got to feel kind of special and different a little.
Speaker 2 (10:40):
Bit for sure. And you know, I was on a
media call today with a lot of different media members
and we talked about that about you know, starting from
the wha days of the Final Five when there was
ten team league and five teams made it and there
was a four or five c playing game. I tell
you what. That was my kind of initial start and
call of hockey as a assistant coach. And what a
(11:01):
great experience where we're not only you know, we are destination.
We circled on the calendar every year. We want to
be a part of that, but also our fan base,
our fan base wanted to be at the Excel Energy
Center for the Final five, and it's no different right
now with four teams in the NCAA C. You know,
it's a little bit uh sentimental here right now because
it is the last time we're going to be there
and going to home sites next year. But that's even
(11:22):
more we're going to cherish it even more and have
more motivation. Know what it is? The last time?
Speaker 3 (11:27):
Were you on the bench for the time out game?
Speaker 2 (11:29):
No? I was. I was coaching pro hockey tonight.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
You had your own time out game?
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Yeah, that was my first. That was my first game
as a head coach and we're playing Lake Superior State.
I had to call it time out. It was the
cam no more, no more. It was no more goals,
don't let it any more, goals, no more. And he didn't.
He didn't let it anymore. We won that game.
Speaker 1 (11:50):
Sometimes people say that you got to have a big,
eloquent speech, sometimes simple as best.
Speaker 2 (11:57):
Get right to the point. No flow, No flow, man,
I mean, did you?
Speaker 3 (12:02):
Brad Schlasman wrote another about that the timeout game at
the Final five in Minnesota, and the players all said,
act did and say a whole lot between periods or anything.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
But sometimes that's all it takes. It's just hey, take
a breath, right, like, stop the momentum from the other
team and take a breath and let's get after it.
Guys are smart, they know what to do. They know
that maybe they're not playing well in what they have
to do. It's just taking a moment, taking a breath.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
Well, we appreciate you all season long coming out here.
We really appreciate it. Let's have a great weekend.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
