Speaker 1 (00:01):
And we welcome you back here on Hawk Talk downtown
Grand Forks. I'm Paul Rawlstike, glad to have you along
with us. Tim Hennessy, long time forty five year voice
of North to Go to Hockey, called another good series
this past weekend out in Kalamazoo. The lunatics wouldn't let
off him. He just said, hey, fellas, I've been doing
this a long time. Leave me alone. But I tell

(00:21):
you what, that must have been a lot of fun. Tim,
And you don't see an exciting game on Saturday.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Spring break, so they but it's still was back but
with the students, and they were as vulgar as they.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Well, everybody please want to go head coach of North
to Go to Hockey, Brad Berry here to Hawk Talk
on this Tuesday night throughout the region. And Tim.

Speaker 3 (00:46):
Like that, right, you know, that goes back to the
old days of college hockey. What the rinks were like, right,
Like the old GRALF was like that, yep. And and
it's tight, fans are on top of it's loud, and
and the place very fast like that. Small rank things
happen quick.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, they do. That's and we're so close from our
broadcast advantage. Yeah, that's a fast game.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
Well, I notice you up in the press box. It's
like the old Toronto Maple Leiefs gondola up there where
like there's no room, Like there's three of you guys.
I think, like jammed together, you and Darren Licker and
Schloss and all those guys are up there that are tight.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Yeah it was. I mean they're a good team, there's
no doubt about it. But what a what a rebound
for you on Saturday nine?

Speaker 3 (01:29):
Think, yeah, for sure, you know, and it didn't you know,
I thought we played the right way to start the game.
We gave up the first goal and then obviously came
back and got the league going into third and then
gave up the league and lead and tied it and
went in overtime. But you know, I think we played
good for five periods. The first period on Friday for
six minutes. Yeah, and you know what, like here's the
deal there was I think a lot of people don't know, like,

(01:50):
you know, they're playing for the Penrose. They made a
push early, they got a power play, they scored on
the power play, and then they scored one right after
and they got their momentum that way. But I thought
our guys scratching cloud in the second the third and
tried to make it a one goal game, and then
they got another one to make it a two goal
game a couple of times. But our guys battled and uh,
and they played the right way.

Speaker 2 (02:08):
You know, that's something that you've done going back to
three weeks at least when you say scratching clod because
I when I when you say that, I think back
to the Saturday of Denver.

Speaker 3 (02:18):
Yeah, for sure. I mean yeah, And you know what
I think going into that, You know, guys realize what's
going on and where we're at, you know, with the
standings pair wise, everything. Guys realize where they're at, and
it's just you know, hey, we're going to throw everything
out there right now. And you know, the biggest thing
is not gripping their sticks and folding under pressure of
knowing you know, what's in front of them. It's just like, hey,
you know, it is what it is, and we're gonna

(02:40):
go out there and we're going to play loose. And
our guys play are playing loose and making plays. Now.

Speaker 2 (02:44):
What's interesting is uh. And I've talked to a few
people about it, and they go, well, you know they're
blah blah blah blah blah. You know that goes a
blah blah blah blah blah. Right, And I said, when
you're talking about all freshmen and sophomore defensemen, are you
kidding me? Yeah, I mean in that league.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
Well, you know what, here's the deal. Like, you know,
when you get take Levanovij's sophomore playing thirty one minutes
on a Saturday night, you know, after playing probably twenty
six twenty seven minutes on a Friday night. That's a
lot of minutes for a sophomore, right, but he has
to there's nobody else and and he's and they're doing
a good job him and Weaver and Strty and and
all the decoy they're they're stepping up. And even Tanner Komzak,

(03:20):
who's not played at all this year, he did a
really good job of coming in and playing good minutes
for us. And and you know, just just digging in.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
He did what he was supposed to do. Yeah, didn't
try to do more, No, then he than he can do.
And I thought he was he was just fine.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
I thought he was too. And you know, we've talked
to Dylan Simpson. You know, he did video with him today,
Dylan does Simpson does video individually with all of our
D man And you know he came out of the
meeting today with Tanner, he goes you know, until you
watch video, you really don't know. On the bench, you
know definitively how they played. I went through video with him.
He did a really good job. And what kind of

(03:57):
stands out is like he's a big body. He knows
who he is and how he has to play, and
he stops the cycle. He goes in there and he
eliminates guys in the diesel Like he makes it easy
for us to try to get control of the puck
to go on offense, and that's what you want on
the D man.

Speaker 2 (04:11):
I'll tell you what. When he was in earlier in
the season, there's time as an announcer guy, I'm looking
going yeah, yeah, for sure, yeah, but not lately.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
Well again, I think they goes solid. Yeah, he's solid,
And I think it's that thing that not overthinking it
then and he's getting an opportunity and it's like just go,
just go play, Go do the things that you did
in junior that gave you success. And I think sometimes
as young guys when they don't get a lot of
ice time or opportunity. It's like, man, I can't screw up.
I can't make a mistake. And it's like, hey, you
know what, go out there, put your best foot forward,

(04:41):
compete hard. If you make a mistake, you know what,
go back out there again. Don't do it again. Don't
do it. But but just have confidence in yourself of
just doing the right thing.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Do you have to put weight on on Livanovich? Wait,
because he's a real slight gut Yeah. You know what,
though I don't know if people understand here, here's what happened.
But you know what he did over the summer, and
I'll tell you what. Like it's tough to for not
so much weight but strength. Yeah, yeah, but you know,
here's the deal. He came in, he came in really strong,

(05:10):
and he came in thick, uh and put on the
good muscle or the good pounds, and then you know
what happens in the course of a year and you
try to.

Speaker 3 (05:18):
Maintain that weight. The minutes he's playing, he lost a
little bit of that, you know what I mean, He's
lost a little bit of his his his size or
his girth or his the strength side of it. And
I think one of those things as a smaller undersized
defenseman is you know what, you got to continue to
try to keep building it through the year. But man,
oh man, like at the end of the day, the
minutes he's playing and the workload he's he's doing, like

(05:41):
it's tough to keep it on.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
What's impressive is he does a lot of good things,
oh for sure, but he doesn't try to do things
he can't do like smack into people.

Speaker 3 (05:51):
Yeah for sure.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
And you know what, he'll use his body to get
the fucking whatever. But he's not going to run.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
At people, No, for sure not And you know what,
I guess the closest analogy I have is like a
Troy Stetcher. You know Troy. Troy would go in a corner,
undersized guy going in no, yeah, but you know what,
he come out with a pucket. And that's what That's
what Jake Lemanovis does too. Like he he goes in
when with a bigger guy and he comes out with
a puck and that's a that's a big deal.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
TJ. Sempton Pelter Goaltender of the month. That is so awesome.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
How much confidence does that give you to go you
know where you're going to pencil in on Friday night?

Speaker 3 (06:28):
Well, as a coach, it does, But what about your players,
Like at the end of the day, Like, you know,
that's what players want. They want a guy that can
make a save when he has to, like make all
the saves he needs to, like the easy saves, but
every now and then, make a save that should be
going in the net, like make a miraculous save here
and there. And I tell you what, it infuses confidence

(06:49):
in your team and swagger and your team to have that.
And likewise, I guess the other way, if a goaltender
lets in a one or two soft ones, you kind
of deflate your team knowing that, hey, if you score
three goals, usually have a great chance to win a
game in the NCAAC. And if you give up one
or two soft what it's like, oh we got we
got we got a ways to go to get back
in this one.

Speaker 1 (07:08):
What was his attitude coming out of a Friday night
game where because you know, sometimes the score line is
the way things go in a game and way a
team around a goaltender, but goaltenders to take things personally.
So how are things and then you put them right
back in on a Saturday.

Speaker 3 (07:23):
Yeah, that's a great question. I'll tell you what. And
I told him today on the ice after practice, I said,
I was proud of him because, like you know, he
kept battling through that game, which was a tough game,
like they may push us throughout that game, and he
gave us a chance to win when it was a
one goal game a couple of times, but when we
pulled a goalie and we scored on it, and then
we put him back in again. Like he's in the
net and he's focused, and he's ready, and he's looking

(07:45):
at the play and he's looking at the bench like
I'm coming, I'm coming. He wants like he's dialed in
right away. But for me, after that Friday game, he
did everything he could to give us a chance to win.
And I asked my staff, I just said, I know
what I want to do, but what, like, what are
your guys' thoughts at the end of the day, where
do you want to go with this? And so you know,
I think it was like, wow, let's think about this.
And I said, well, personally, for me, I said, he's

(08:07):
built up enough good will in a body of work
that we got to go back. We got after absolutely,
and you know what, Hobi would have done the job.
I think too. But at the end of the day,
like this is the time you need a guy to
make a run. And I think what it does it
shows belief in that goaltender too, that hey, even though
you're winning games, it's easy to throw him in, throw
him back. But if you lose a game and you
compete your ass off, excuse my language, that's hard. If

(08:29):
you compete at the highest level, then you know what
the coach says, Man, he's got my back. I got
confidence in him. He's thrown me in again. I'm going
to show him that I can do this, and he did.

Speaker 2 (08:38):
You know the interesting thing about TJ is he so mature.
Oh yeah, he should call Yeah, he's twenty nine years
old exactly. But I mean, really that's part of it.
I think he doesn't get rattled, I know for sure.

Speaker 3 (08:53):
And you know what, Like it's funny too. When I
was talking to him today, he goes, you know, I've
been in a couple of different programs and you know,
there's always good and they're not so good and different
things like that. He goes, man, man, my experience this
year has been awesome. There's not been anything that's been
a negative like for me, this is such a great
learning experience and it's been a pleasure and a joy
to be here this year, even though it's been kind

(09:13):
of an inconsistent year. And I think he's just you know,
the dividends are paying off right now, and knock on
this table of wood. Continue to do that, you know.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
Yeah, because I think that takes a whole load of
you guys when you go, hi, we know it's in
the goal, now, let's work from there.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
Yeh. It's one less thing, you know. And and again
it's probably the most important thing, right, the goaltending side
of it, right.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
And it is a tough team, yeah they are. I
mean they're tough.

Speaker 3 (09:39):
To they're gretty team. They're gretty team. And they always
they always play well against us, sure they do. And
you know, when you think of this year, the Bmidgies
and the Cornells of the state, you know, that's their
Stanley Cup playing against us, and then the rest of
their season is kind of blah, you know, Like you know,
I think it's the same with Omaha, like they try
to measure up and you know they want to be
that team that tries to keep going postseason. And you

(10:01):
know what, they used to be our travel partner, like
I told you earlier this morning, where we played four games.
Now haven't played them all year, and now we played
the last two games of the regular season against them.

Speaker 2 (10:09):
Yeah, it's just it's always been a battle.

Speaker 3 (10:12):
With those oh, for sure it has. And they got
a good goalie. They got a really good goal now.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
They really do. But he didn't play Saturday night.

Speaker 3 (10:18):
They didn't and that's you know, at the end of
the day, you want to try to have that goaltender
like we do to keep playing back to back, and
now they put that Kevin Reedler kidd. He did a
good job as a freshman in there. But I would
I would imagine we're going.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
To see the My last question before we let you
go would be you know there there's you guys know
the situation. It's just a big weekend. Each game, every
shift right from the drop of the buck on Friday
is important. How you play and the way you guys
want to play. And yet it is also a senior
weekend and this is the time to celebrate those and

(10:51):
you got to kind of put everything into perspective, and
and you've seen how teams have handled it in the past,
and there's certain ways to do it in certain and
ways not to.

Speaker 3 (11:00):
I guess, well, I firmly believe we're gonna get a
bump both nights. Like, you know, like we've got so
many good seniors in our locker room, and they're all
a lot of them are local, you know, when you
think of Dame Montgomery and Caleb Johnson and Jackson Coon's
and well Camberg down the road in Fargo. Like at
the end of the day, guys want to play hard
for these guys, knowing that it could be their last
regular you know time in the ralph You know, hopefully

(11:21):
we get home ice we play another weekend at home.
But at the end of the day, we usually get
a huge bump and it's a big deal. And I
tell you what, what we usually do too on Saturday
at pregame meal, we usually let those seniors speak from
the heart and talk about you know, they always talk
about the same things, how special it is here, how
they always wanted to play here, how fast four years goes,
and it truly does, you know, when you think about

(11:43):
those guys as freshmen coming in here and now here
we are at you know, senior night, and those four
years go by quick.

Speaker 2 (11:49):
How many guys? How many guys we participated?

Speaker 3 (11:52):
Yeah, so we've got about five guys and then then
we're going to bring in uh Carter Wilkie, he's going
to go in uh Bennet's and Mlock's not going to
because he's red shirt. He can come back yet another year. Yep,
So we're not going to do that. So I think
it's about five or six guys.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
Okay, well that's always yeah, what I don't know what
you're calling emotional.

Speaker 3 (12:14):
It's emotional, yeah, but but it's it's a positive and
uh and you know the parents are there. We acknowledge
the parents as well, and it's it's a special weekend.
And I'll tell you what. We get a huge bump
and usually we're lifting the Penrose cup of that that weekend.
This year we're not. We're scratching the klawan and keeps us,
keeps us motivated here.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
Well, what a care at dangling out there on a
great weekend ahead here in Grand Forks for you and
d hockey appreciated here, good guys, head coach Brad Barry, everybody.
Big weekend ahead North to go to hockey. It's gonna
be a lot of fun. And uh, you know this
is this is the fun time a year for Tim
and and Mike Lamoyn up there in the boo.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
Yes, this is almost like, I mean, I want to
be home next I don't.

Speaker 3 (12:56):
Go on the road next week.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
Well if that okay, but I don't one I would
just be here.

Speaker 1 (13:05):
I would assume that I would just rather have you here.

Speaker 2 (13:08):
Yeah, that's so many scenarios. Oh yeah, and when you
look at it, you can't tell right now, well even
after Friday night.

Speaker 1 (13:15):
I was never good at calculus, so I I don't
even dare when when we return North go to men's
and women's basketball will be heading to Sioux Falls and
the Denny Sandford Premier Center hosting the Sun League Championships
and coming up on Friday night, the the Denny will
be packed with probably ninety nine percent blue and yellow,

(13:39):
and okay, well it'll probably be ninety four percent. Then
they'll probably be about four percent red and white from
the previous game or whatever, and then or whoever is
in the previous game. Actually, no, I think it's a
Saint Thomas and Denver or is it USD and NDSU.
There you go, that's right, yeah, so any yes, yeah,

(14:03):
but anyway, what I'm saying is it's going to be
a wonderful, fantastic experience to be a part of. And uh,
you know, you live the dream. You have a chance,
chip chair and a chance, and North Dakta is going
to have a chance. On Friday night in men's basketball,
we'll talk with head coach Paul Sather as we return
with more Hawk Talk across the Fighting Hawks Radio Network.
