Speaker 1 (00:01):
It is Hawk Talk Tonight Live and signed to five
oh six Pomp Hugo's Pure Market Downtown Graham, Orks. Got
on twenty minutes or so left in the program tonight.
It's still time to pop in if you care to
join us for chance to get caught up with North
to go to hockey tonight. As we say hello and
good evening to head coach Dame Jackson. Jacks thanks for

(00:21):
stopping in.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Yeah, absolutely happy to be here.

Speaker 1 (00:24):
All right, so let's start again by well back up
to last week. And I still kind of I chuckled
a little bit because I, you know, show up to
the rink and it's a Friday night and thinking to myself,
all right, we're gonna have this exhibition friendly. We got
the US under eighteen's in, came down and got a
chance to talk to you, and it was anything but
an exhibition. I mean, it was a good work night
for your boys, and it showed in a good five
to one win.

Speaker 3 (00:45):
Yeah, it looked a little bit exhibition y on the
first period, but we actually spotted in the end of
the first period.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
But yeah, that wasn't our best start.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
But yeah, we just gonna say hey boys anytime we
put on the North Dakota Jersey, you know, and you're
representing you get a whatever it is, nine thousand people
there for an exhibition game.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Let's let's go play with pride and play hard.

Speaker 3 (01:03):
So, uh, we didn't love our start, but we worked
our way into it, and then better and better as
the game went on.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
You got physical and we started kind of playing.

Speaker 3 (01:11):
Fast and letting the puck be moving moving quickly, and
we started playing the right way and just kind of
warm down, which was really good to see.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
You mentioned no matter what who the opponent is, what
it counts for league, non you know, non conference, I mean,
like you said, it's a good night and it's all
part of the process.

Speaker 2 (01:26):
Yep. Yeah, it was good to good to kind of
feel our way in and then to start.

Speaker 3 (01:30):
We've been pretty consistent on, uh, with our puck management
and just kind of you know, we're getting much better
and kind of playing playing north and playing fast and
just being direct, like when we get a puck instead
of taking it back and you know, handling a little
bit or or going D to D like we've been
doing a good job of getting pucks straight up and
and kind of attacking and catching teams a little bit
in that transition. So I've been pretty happy with the

(01:52):
way the guys been buying in about just playing a
direct north hard fast style. And uh, we kind of
feeling we were really a skating team. So we when
we skate and we get that puck move and and
we get in on the fore check and and create turnovers.
You know, we got some heaviness and some hardness to us,
and and then we have the you know, you get
you get more rush chances, which we know are kind

(02:13):
of highly valuable, and then we'll just go grind teams
and try to try to bang some bodies and get
some bucks to the net.

Speaker 1 (02:19):
And obviously Friday gave you a couple of different opportunities.
Number one of you get guys like mean Ingle into
the lineup, you get some extended minutes. But you also
get guys in different you know, positions, different opportunities, different assignments.
And Andrew Straffman comes to mind playing in a few
more situations. How big is that to just kind of
not only for those guys individually, but for you guys
as a group.

Speaker 2 (02:38):
Yeah, it was.

Speaker 3 (02:38):
Fun, fun to see, uh, you know, Strathman and Lorilla
got to play a little bit of time on the
power play there, so that was really cool. Some guys
got some different chances on the penalley kill. But now
you mentioned Ian Angle. I, you know, I got so
much respect for that young man. He he came in
here and he just worked and.

Speaker 2 (02:56):
Uh, he's a good player.

Speaker 3 (02:58):
You know, he came in he was physically want our
hit of the game there on Hinton Birchild kind of
in the middle of the ice. The boys were pretty
fired up about that, and he moved bocks. He made
a great kind of no look past to Dylan James
that just missed on a kind of a half open cage.
But yeah, Ian showed that he can play. We've kind
of seen that with his way. He's practiced, and so

(03:18):
really happy for him. But yeah, a lot of different
guys you got to get the chances to get in
and compete, which was great to see.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
And you've talked about guys like him and Tyler Young
and how you obviously have the depth and having the
right guys and it's one thing for a guy to
be on the phone with you in the middle of
the summer wanting to come here. Yeah, coach, Yeah, I'm
going to do that guy for you, but you're seeing
it and that's just a good reflection of the group,
the process and the culture.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Right. Yeah, that's a great point.

Speaker 3 (03:43):
You know, Tyler Young, we kind of it took a
long time to kind of for all the kind of
chips to fall basically and figure out what we're doing.
And he was very, very patient and you know, wow,
he scored a big time goal.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
That was a high hand goal.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Yeah, So for him to just kind of get in
there and just see the opportunity is really cool to see.
He's played hard and uh just deserves to be in there.
So really happy for him, and it's a great point.
You know, we had a lot of games where we
had fifteen forwards healthy and we're only playing twelve, so
there's three guys sitting out and then the next thing,
you know, all of a sudden, there's three injuries and
and guys are getting to play. So they were ready

(04:19):
for the challenge. You know, that's when you know the
guys were prepared for the opportunity, and that's success. So
they give them high marks for their kind of being
in shape and being ready and knowing what's going on
and being ready to step in and be positive players
for us.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
Other goodbye product. Last Friday night, all three goaltenders got
a period. A big one for Gibson Homer, big one
for Aren't, a big one for Zach Sandy too. Just
in three different kind of a three act play, but
good for different reasons for all three of those guys.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Yeah, for sure. Yep.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
The speech before between the second and third was short.
I said, boys, Zach Sandy's going in. He's an unbelievable teammate.
Let's go be great teammates for him, and let's get
after it. And the boys were pretty fired up, so
they were really happy for Zach. Zach played well and
made a couple of good saves there early. Yeah, you know,
unbounced off Strati's towed to go past him. But other
than that, he was really sharp. So the guys were

(05:09):
guys were happy to play hard for him, and we
are as a staff, we are super.

Speaker 2 (05:12):
Excited for Zach.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
Obviously, the result to speaks for itself.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
But did you get what.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
You wanted out of that game?

Speaker 2 (05:17):
For anything? Yeah?

Speaker 3 (05:18):
I think the biggest things we're always looking for is
just kind of to have a mentality to play hard,
play fast, and kind of play the right way, and
I thought, for the most part, you know, other than
probably the first you know, ten twelve minutes, we did
a pretty good job of being physical and being simple
and being direct, and that's kind of the identity we
want to have.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
So now we move ahead, and it's always the up
and down the ice and the high flying and the
back and forth racetrack with Bimidgie State on Friday night.
Just a little tongue of cheek obviously, but Beaver's in
obviously in Bimidgee Friday back here Saturday.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
It's always a battle with these guys.

Speaker 3 (05:53):
Yeah, I get a ton of respect for their program
and tom Territory. They you know, they recruit a they
get a great culture, and they recruit guys that are competitive,
hard two hundred foot players. They can skate and they
they're big bodies. It's just hard to play against. You
gotta be ready for the battle. If you're not, you know,
I think we're probably a little more skilled than them.
But if if you're not ready to kind of you know,

(06:16):
win battles and advanced pucks, you're gonna play a lot
in your defensive zone. Then we've seen that at times
when we're not right on the edge and ready to go.
So we've been talking a lot about that and I
think they've won like seven in a row here, so
they're playing good hockey. So, uh we will not take
them lightly. We'll be ready for the battle. And uh,
you know, it's always a great great matchup playing uh
Bamidgie State Beavers.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
And you mentioned that you were talking which made about
it almost times. You have to kind of play their game,
don't you, And how do you how do you do that?
How do you prepare for that? You know, they you know,
they come so hard.

Speaker 3 (06:45):
You know, they they for check extremely hard, and they're
they put a lot of guys around the puck. So
if you're making kind of soft lateral plays or holding
onto pucks, you know you're gonna you're gonna draw pressure
to yourself and you're gonna turn the puck over. So
you again you have to be very direct. And sometimes
that's not that's not even a tape to tape pass.
That's just a chipping it by him or putt it
be behind them in space and then kind of because

(07:05):
they're you know, coming at you so hard, you just.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
Got to get to beat that pressure.

Speaker 3 (07:08):
So it's it gets to be uh you gotta you know,
know what you're doing and be ready when you have
that part, because we've had some games where we're not
that sharp and then you end up just you know,
not getting through the neutral zone. So if we do
a good job breaking out and a good job just
kind of advancing bucks and and and get in and
and can for check on them, then we'll have some
chance in the in the ozone. But other than that, uh,
it's all you just fight for every inch against those guys,

(07:30):
and it's all.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
It was a good battle and.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
It feels like there's you have to be patient too,
which your group is showing at times.

Speaker 3 (07:36):
Yeah, I think, uh, you know they're there, you can
it's hard to score again against them, and uh, you know,
you get going for a while and you're kind of said, ah,
you know, I want to make a play. I want
to hold onto this and dangle a guy or something
like that, and that's what they're kind of hoping you're
gonna do, and they're gonna try to turn that, uh
you know, that turnover into a transition goal for themselves.
So yeah, it's it's it's a maturity to kind of
understand how the game is going to be and just

(07:57):
be ready for for the battle.

Speaker 1 (07:59):
Obviously, you had some line kind of changes last Friday
with the exhibition, getting some guys some rest. How are
we looking coming back into one piece here going into
this weekend? Yeah, I think our defensive corp will look different.
You know, we'll get for sure. I think Web and
Verhoff back possibly's a molac and then up front I
think Jack curn should be available, so that'll be nice

(08:19):
to get him going. So those are some good bodies
that are good players, and definitely, you know, help to
have those guys playing, and we talked about what they
do and how you have to adjust to that. But
what can you control Friday night? What are you looking
to have happened for your club early?

Speaker 2 (08:33):
Yeah, I think we're just sharp.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
If you're crisp, like if you have good short pass
support and you're willing to kind of make a skilled
chip and put it behind him and skate onto it,
you know, those things are gonna drive possession for you
in the offensive zone. So just the ability to you know,
get back for pucks, get your toes around at prepuck awareness.
We talk about guys shoulder check and we talk about talking,
so before you get that puck, you know the next

(08:55):
play and you know time to make a big play.
It's usually just another ten foot pass or a like
I say, a skilled chip. So it's it's just kind
of having that readiness to know what's coming at in
be prepared to get get out of your zone with
a good breakout and sometimes it's just shooting off the
glass and then come to the neutral zone and and

(09:15):
get our chance to play in the offensive zone.

Speaker 2 (09:17):
Then make some play from there.

Speaker 1 (09:18):
And obviously we know non conference as big as they
come now this time of the year, i'd imagine your group,
but in the in the staff is not shied away
from that and letting these guys know that it's important,
but not making sure we're gripping those sticks a little
too tight too, right.

Speaker 3 (09:31):
Yeah, Again, it's always that balance because we know what's important.
But again, we just focus on the things we have
to do to play well. You know, if we if you,
if you, if you're prepared and you're on the edge
and you're ready to battle, and you're you're ready to
kind of play the.

Speaker 2 (09:46):
Game the right way, you know, we we know over.

Speaker 3 (09:49):
Time that we've had good success against these guys when
we're when we're in that space. So instead of saying, hey,
these conference games are really important, we're saying, hey, hustling
back first pucks on our breakout, it's really importan when
you have no play, shooting it hard off the glass
is really important.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
Pushing the pace for four it is really important.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
We ran from the offensive zone if there's no play
for you know, if the deer gapped up when you
got back pressure, you got to put it behind them.

Speaker 2 (10:10):
That's important. So you know, you kind of.

Speaker 3 (10:13):
You focus on the process versus the result, and you
usually in the end it comes your way a.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
Little bit too.

Speaker 1 (10:19):
Obviously, different wrinkle with the home and home my head
over on Thursday to get ready for Friday. You change
much other than that throughout the week, kind of knowing
what you're gonna have to manage the short and turn
around the travel.

Speaker 2 (10:29):
What goes into that, Yeah, not too much, you know.

Speaker 3 (10:31):
Obviously with Thanksgiving, we want our guys to be able
to you know, for guys that have friends and family
around here, we'll make sure everybody's got a spot to
go to. But we'll up a short skate on Thursday
morning and then we're gonna take a break and let
everybody kind of go home to hopefully their their families
or have guys over to be with each other a
little bit, and then we'll leave later.

Speaker 2 (10:51):
We'll leave at seven and just get over there.

Speaker 3 (10:53):
In time to at nine o'clock down and go to
bed and then be up and sharp and ready to
go the next day. So yeah, we're just just changing
our travel a little bit, so the guys can, you know,
be with their families and friends a little bit on
Thanksgiving and then we'll.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Be ready to compete on Friday.

Speaker 1 (11:06):
So then of course you come back for Saturday, game
two of the series and kind of go from There's
is there much of a difference going from but Midgie
to the Ralph kind of things that are they're going
to change. Obviously it's still two hundred and eighty five,
still four by six, But anything that you kind of
have in the back of your mind from a coaching step.

Speaker 2 (11:22):
Yeah, it's interesting to say that.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
I think sometimes when our guys come back to the
ralf they feel like they have to kind of put
on a show for our fans, you know. Where I
think when we're there, you kind of say, hey, they're
they're fine. To just punt and shoot the puck out
of the zone or chip it in where sometimes I
think in our building I find they feel like, oh,
I got to make a better play, or you know,
I want to.

Speaker 2 (11:42):
Be on the highlight reel or something like that.

Speaker 3 (11:44):
So that's something we gotta be careful about because there's
not too many highlight reel plays to be made against
the Beavers.

Speaker 1 (11:50):
And maybe that's as simple as it needs to be
to go over there Friday night and know that that's
got to be the default setting.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
Yeah, it's ready to The biggest thing is you're you're
on the edge. You know, you're not over the edge,
you're ready to, ready to battle. You're staying out of
the box, and you're just playing a strong game.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
You know.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
I like our kind of track record of how we've
committed to play with the puck. You know, our puck
decisions have been good this year. We know that many
guys begin fans here turn over pucks. We've been pretty
committed to four check and get through the neutral zone,
taken what the game gives us. So, you know, believe
in our guys and we'll have a readiness. We know,

(12:25):
we know they're big games, and we're starting to mature
as a team and.

Speaker 2 (12:28):
Kind of figuring out our identity and how we got
to play.

Speaker 1 (12:30):
Yeah, it kind of boils down to two teams this
weekend that it's going to come down to who can
be on brand the best.

Speaker 2 (12:35):
I think, Yeah, for sure.

Speaker 3 (12:36):
You know, we've I've always had close games with these guys,
and you know, special teams are going to be big
and and you got.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
To be sharp on those.

Speaker 3 (12:43):
And then when you you know, when you kind of
make the right play for whatever it is seven out
of ten times, and then those two or three times
out of ten when you get a little bit of
space on entry to to make some creative plays, let's
make them and let's convert show our skill and ability there.
But got to understand that a lot of times there's
not gonna be a lot of a lot of open
space or room for creative play. So you just got

(13:05):
to kind of get into that mindset. I'm ready to do,
uh whatever it's kind of available, and quite often that's
making a real basic play to advance.

Speaker 1 (13:13):
The puck should be a battle always is. Before we
let you go, do you double dip or you kind
of double down? Canadian American thanksgivings now and the jah.

Speaker 3 (13:22):
We've we've always kind of we've always kind of had
a pretty big group with Well Hackstall and coobri Inskip Perny,
a bunch of these tark Hour, a bunch of these
Canadian guys that are still hanging around.

Speaker 2 (13:34):
We normally get together. This year we kind of cheaped out.

Speaker 3 (13:36):
All we did was get together for a little uh
little happy hour and uh some Olsen.

Speaker 2 (13:41):
Canadian but uh that was that was still good, just
to get the car referation. So we are I guess
you could.

Speaker 3 (13:47):
Call it a double dip, not quite the full deal,
but uh that's a great part of always it's a
good tradition we've had here. You know, when Greg Lotus
was still alive, he had always come and be with us.
And uh, there's a lot of a lot of guys
that you know, we're down here from you know, we
always are so appreciative of the opportunity we got to
come play college hockey down here and and a lot
of us uh you know, met gals and to build

(14:09):
a life down here.

Speaker 2 (14:09):
So we're appreciative to be in this country and be
in this in this town and such a cool environment.

Speaker 1 (14:16):
What a great dancer going down. Okay, before we let
you run, we asked me the same things, so we
got to put you on the spot. First, first side
dish going on, Dane Jackson's played coming through the food
line tang.

Speaker 3 (14:25):
Well it's yeah, it's definitely uh stuffing heavy gravy, uh
and uh hopefully there's pumpkin pie for is it?

Speaker 2 (14:31):
There? You go?

Speaker 1 (14:32):
Well, said Jacks. Thanks for this best luck this weekend.
We'll talk to you Friday, but Mitchie, thanks man. That's
Dave Jackson joining us tonight on the Hawk Talk North
to go to hockey. We'll take a quick pause, come
back and wrap things up next. As you listen to

In 1997, actress Kristin Davis’ life was forever changed when she took on the role of Charlotte York in Sex and the City. As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today.
