Speaker 1 (00:00):
Fourteen forty am the fan.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Good morning, it's a Wednesday, and we got to talk
to you and E soccer And after they've had a
huge journey here just to get home from Louisiana, they
return home and I think we've got head coach Hendrickson
of the University of North Dakota women's soccer team.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Good morning, coach, How are you today?

Speaker 3 (00:24):
Good morning, I'm doing well. Thank you for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:27):
What a journey your team was on.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
You had to spend an extra day I think in
New Orleans, which I guess you know, that's a city
of history and good food, so there's worse places to
spend an extra day. But you also have a team
that wants to get home and get back into their
own beds eventually. But you were finally able to do
so with a little a few travel difficulties along the way.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
Huh.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
Yeah, that's college athletics for you right there. You know,
we were supposed to fly back Monday morning, so we
roll off to the airport and you know what, flight
to Dallas was canceled, and you know, finding twenty four
tickets to get you to Dallas and then to Fargo.
It's quite a challenge. So we got rebooked for yesterday

(01:10):
and it was an all day affair. We got split
up in several groups, but in the end of the day,
we made it safe and sound and we're back in
Grand Forks. That's what matters.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
That's what matters exactly right.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
Well, your fighting Hawks program off to a five and
one start, you rattled off five in a row, finally
got clipped a little bit, as is the world of soccer.
I think you certainly had chances in the game against Nicols.
You generated plenty of looks and shots I think to
the total of twenty eight with eleven on frame. But

(01:42):
I would just say that sometimes, you know, you just
can't seem to solve a good defense and a good
goalkeeper and it just wasn't happening on that day.

Speaker 1 (01:53):
So it wasn't for lack of opportunities.

Speaker 2 (01:56):
You just didn't quite finish your chances or take those
chances in that game against Nichols to close out your
road trip.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Yeah, I think you summed it up right there. You know,
soccer is a unique game and in that aspect that
sometimes the better team loses. And then quite frankly, we
were the better team just looking at the stats and
being there. You know, the referee made some decisions with
the penalty for Nichols early on that was questionable, and
then a team like Nickels sits in and just defends

(02:26):
for ninety minutes, and as the game progresses, you got
to put more numbers forward and you got to try
to push to get the equalized and eventually win it,
and it opens up other opportunities because you push numbers forward.
That's just the nature of the game. Like games like
this do happen in the game of soccer, and it's
quite frankly, it sucks, but there's a lot to learn

(02:46):
from it. So we were trying to look at the
silver lining in the situation. And it's not the end
of the world. It's non conference, and I think these
experiences will make us better going into conference, so we're
trying to see it as a lesson.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
Last week, last week I think it was Charlie Passinette
was a Something League player Performer of the Week. I mean,
she had such a run of scoring. She was kind
of scoring for fun, as they say over in Europe,
when they do chance or scoring when she wants to.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
And I don't know that she got on the sheet.

Speaker 2 (03:18):
I think she helped with a game with a goal
by Leffler in against Jackson State. But she's had quite
a good run in front of goal. She just has
a knack right now. And you always like players that
have that confidence that they always feel like they can
maybe find find a goal because you know that that's

(03:39):
it's it's sometimes more than ability about goal scoring a
little bit. It's just having that confidence that you can
you can just score and they end up being the
best goal scorers, don't they.

Speaker 3 (03:49):
Yeah, absolutely, Charlie. I wasn't a streak last week. You know,
she she did well against Jackson providing the assists to Amy.
But you know it's it's more are the mindset and
the confidence, like you in front of ned and you
just have the mind I got to score this ball,
no meta what, and that's what comes down to. So
that's what Charlie had the last couple of weeks, and

(04:10):
Charlie's been really stepping up for sophomore. I'm really happy
with her performance and I think she is she's someone
to watch. You know, we named it a some league
offensive player to watch for for our team, and there's
a reason for that. Like she showed that ability in
the spring, and we're so excited for for how she's
gonna progress and she'll only get better. She's a sophomore,
so really excited about that to have her in the program,

(04:31):
and she's she's been nothing but great so far.

Speaker 2 (04:34):
Tim, Do you have a Do you have any questions?
Tim for for Henrik this morning?

Speaker 3 (04:39):
No?

Speaker 2 (04:39):
I think you guys are answering them all. Okay, fair enough,
I got another one here. I'm good to get back
home to Bronson Field. It's gonna happen. You've got a
contest tomorrow scheduled against UC Santa Barbara at Bronson Field.
The weather looks like good soccer weather. By that I
mean potential rain and playing on a fast field. Perhaps

(05:01):
you know tell us what you know about Santa Barbara
and that in that group usually they have some very
good soccer from the West Coast. So what what what
is your team looking like? Is they get this quick
turnaround with a whole match looming here?

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Yeah? You know with the rain, you know what they
say in Europe? Can they do it on a rainy
night or a rainy afternoon in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
That's gonna be a question forms. So No, So Santa
Barbara is an Anti Double A tournament team. They made
it the Anti Double A Tournament last year out of
the Big West. Very good team. We've been scouting him.
It's going to be a true challenge. It will really

(05:38):
challenge us the level that we will see in conference
like the Denver So South Dakota State. So I'm really
excited for an opportunity to play a team of that caliber.
It will it will show where we at in the progress,
because you know in the process, because a soccer season
is the process. You're working through it till you hit conference. Though,
this will be a real test and to see where

(05:59):
we at we need to do to move forward. So
I'm super excited about this opportunity. It will be a
great game, and like I said, we will see if
they can do it on a cold for them at
least cold, rainy afternoon in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and
we will have some answers to that tomorrow night.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
I love that you're rolling out the weather carpet for
them and just saying, hey, we're going to give you
the conditions of fall soccer. At times, you're not going
to get perfect conditions. Like we had last week throughout
the region. Are you concerned at all due to the
challenges of travel of how your team may respond. Maybe
this is a good This is maybe good that this

(06:36):
happened for you a little bit that this is going
to be a quick turnaround now with some travel difficulties,
Just to see how your team handles maybe the stress,
and how they handle basically that everything doesn't always go
according to plan, and how you got to still bounce
and be focused and be ready for a big time
game like this. I suppose that that's what you're going

(06:56):
to learn about this team about your own team tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
Yeah. Absolutely. You know it comes down to the character
at one point. And you know, college soccer is unique
in the way that you play games in such short
in such a short time frame. You play Thursday Sunday.
It's unique. It's one of the toughest schedules in the
world of soccer if you think about it. If you
look at the professional leagues, they don't even do that,

(07:21):
and we play more than professional athletes. And with the
travel thrown in there and the issues we've had to
get back to Grand Forks, I think that's the character test,
and I think it's great we can see who steps
up and you know, who has the right mindset or
do we have players that have that victimhood mentality, which
I don't think we do, but it will reveal that.

(07:42):
And that's the opportunities we're looking for from in non conference.
That's why we schedule these games to see and prepare
ourselves for conference. So I'm very excited about that, and
I'm with you, it's a chance more than a problem.
I'm looking forward to seeing who steps up, who's responding,
how we respawning as a group, And adversity makes you
get better because you need to face obstacles or to

(08:03):
grow as a program and as an individual. So I
think there is a lot of good things that can
come out of this little mishap on the road and
the traveling. So there's the civil lining on that.

Speaker 1 (08:14):
For sure, Yeah, no doubt about it.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
What happens to a soccer pitch when it gets wet.
Let's say it is a rainy day. What happens when
the ball runs across that surface? Because you know, if
you watch a professional game on TV, let's say I'm
watching the Premier League, you see them adding water to
a pitch at halftime. Basically, you see them have sprinklers
on sometimes. What happens when when a surface gets a

(08:39):
little damp when you're kicking a soccer ball round For
those that don't know.

Speaker 3 (08:44):
Yeah, it gets fast. A little damp, it gets fast.
The ball skips and it rolls even faster. If it
rains a lot of your puddles, yeah, that's the ball stop.
I don't think it will rain that much, so the
game will be even faster. The ball will roll really
well well, and you know, you got to adjust your
game a little bit because it skips and it's fast

(09:05):
and you gotta get used to that. And the footing
because it's natural grass is always a little tough, so
we got to bring out the metal stuffs so we
don't slide, which is a good thing. You know, I'm
from Europe. At the end of the day, that's our gruff.
I'm a big fan of that, and you know, I'm
excited for that.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
You know, we talked a little bit about your sophomore
and having that run of goals like she did. But
I think you do have a good group of veterans,
everybody from a Kraken to a Leffler, and I'm gonna
miss some people here, ma k there.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
They've been you know, in.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
The battles and and certainly have a lot of time
on the pitch. Do you have a good leadership group
with your veterans this year? Do you feel like that's
a good core to kind of build around as the
season gets tougher and as you get closer to to
some league play.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
Oh. Absolutely, they've been fantastic. You know. They you know
it's it's their last year. We have a lot of seniors.
It's a very senior heavy team this year, and and
they they want to go out with with good results.
You know the past. They're not satisfied with the results
we've had, so they're ready to do whatever takes the win.
And they have that mindset and they lead that they're

(10:16):
younger players because you know, they lead by example, they
speak up. They've been nothing but fantastic. You know. Amy
Loveler is our captain. Alicia Makey is another captain we have,
and these two in particular have been great. And it
goes for all the other seniors. They've been stepping up.
They're they're leading the way. They're here. They mean business.
Let me put it that way. They're here. The mean

(10:38):
business is their senior year, and that's what you need
in these moments, especially in a game like like that
where you have a short turnaround. They will come, hey,
no excuses, this is no one's fault. Like stuff happens.
That's life. But you know, you got to adapt and overcome.
So we're ready to go and we will. We will
have the right mindset and these these ladies have that
and they they're an example in that and I'm really

(10:59):
really happy with what I've seen from them so far
and I'm really proud of them for that.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
Well, it's uh, you know what weather, whatever the weather is,
We're ready for this opportunity for North to go to
soccer coming up tomorrow afternoon at three at Bronson Field.
You mentioned this is a strong, uh typically strong program
that you know it anticipates that it's going to be
part of the NCAA tournament. Conversation, you're in, you're out,

(11:24):
and you see Santa Barbara. Whatever the weather is, you
guys are going to be ready to take on the
Gauchows coming up tomorrow afternoon at Bronson Field. Appreciate you
adding a little insight on your team number two. We're
glad that you managed all the travel twists and turns. Okay,
every got everybody back, even though they came in back
in separate groups. But we're going to turn around and

(11:45):
have a great day of soccer at Bronson Field and
throughout the season we encourage people to get out and
check out your team. Coach Son, thanks for this, appreciate it.
Good luck tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (11:54):
Thank you so much. Joe Hawk.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
All right, there you go, Hendrik soon the head coach
of you and d women in soccer as they will
just turn around from a few little travel wrinkles and
uh cranker up tomorrow against a team that is a
typically ye're in, year out, a conversational piece of maybe
being part of the NCAA tournament scene.

Speaker 1 (12:15):
You're in, y're out.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
So it's a pretty big team they're they're bringing in
tomorrow and maybe we'll give them a little bit of
north to got to fall weather basically for their for
their troubles
