Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hartfeat Saint Louis with the TJ A k A Holiday
bringing you the pulse of the city.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Hey, look up with you boy, doctor b J DJ
Holiday And of course today in the studio, I got
my man from People's uh Betty jan Care Health Center
or is it just People's Health Center.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
It's Betty jen Kirk People's Health Center.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Better Betty jan Care People's Health Center. Okay, a k
A People's Health Center, a ka people Health Center. I
got my man, doctor Ronald Griffin in the building. How
you doing today, man.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
I'm good brother. How are you all right?

Speaker 2 (00:40):
So, you know, people who's been doing a lot of
stuff in the community for years, but more importantly, you
guys have really stepped up since the tornado. You want
to talk about some of the uh uh different uh
uh resources that you guys have for people uh doing
this this this this time where people are you know,
misplaced and snap is not what it used to be

(01:04):
and all of that.

Speaker 4 (01:04):
That's right, We're in a different place now, that's definitely
the case. So what we've done at Bittijen Kirk People's
Health Center is to just kind of take a step
back and look at the big picture. We wanted to
always be ready for the community and whatever the community
needs and that time of need. So you're right, DJ,
We've been in space for about fifty three years, right,

(01:25):
doing this holistic work for whole person health. So for
the tornado, everybody knows May sixteenth was a devastating day.
We mobilized our outreached teams, which included primary care, behavioral health,
and had all the things that go with it, cleaning supplies, food, medicine, care,
comfort whatever, behavioral health services, assessments, making real time appointments

(01:47):
for people when they need it.

Speaker 3 (01:49):
That's from May sixteenth to July third.

Speaker 2 (01:52):
Now you guys are still doing a lot of that now, right.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
We don't stop. So that's part of our mission, right.
Our mission is to provide the community with all of
the services and barrier free access, barrier free access to
the services.

Speaker 3 (02:07):
From primary care. You mentioned SNAP.

Speaker 4 (02:09):
Let's talk about it, okay, So you know what Congress
did and the failure to go ahead and support SNAP
benefits for millions of American citizens, and you know, Missouri
citizens aren't outside of the box and that you know,
they're definitely a part of it. So we're fortunate to
say that we did get a continuation of Snap services

(02:30):
that's going to continue into the end of twenty twenty six.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
That's one thing.

Speaker 4 (02:34):
But what we did even when the Snap services got disrupted,
we have every other week we have fresh food giveaways.
Right when I say giveaways, I mean you come patient
or not. You can go through our line from ten
to twelve. You get fresh fruits and vegetables and food.
That's on every other Friday, right and then every Thursday

(02:57):
we have the Metro Market to give you opportunities to
get fresh fruit and produce. What we do is we
incentivize you with just for signing up, you get two dollars,
then you get your blood pressure red, you get another
five dollars. You take that seven dollars, go to this
to this Metro market and you get fresh fruits and vegetables.
Is really priced, very decently priced for people that can

(03:17):
afford and sometimes our CEO, as he's so gracious, mister
Dwayne Butler, he would provide extra for people.

Speaker 3 (03:25):
Who needed it in the time that they needed it.

Speaker 4 (03:27):
We also co opt and combine our services with the
Integrated Health Network under the auspices of doctor Adwelly Jolly.
What they did was they gave sent food trucks two
weeks in a row to provide free one hundred meals
for all of the fqightcs and health centers in the space.
So that's Samueuis County, that's Betty jing Kerk People's Health

(03:49):
Center of course, Offenia, Carristl and then family health Care centers.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
Right.

Speaker 4 (03:54):
What that did was that changed the game a little bit.
And again our CEO he was like, look, I don't
care who comes, as long as they hear and they
have food, We're gonna pay for it. And that's what
people have. That's what Betty jen Kirk People' Self Center did.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Okay, Now the holidays are coming up, and I know
you guys got some really good I would say treats
and stuff like that for kids and stuff like that,
because you guys do Christmas giveaways as.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Well, yes, sir, So let me let me just go
back to November.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
You know, we gave it our North County location a
thousand turkeys and all the feelings for before Thanksgiving, and
then we doubled back on that Saturday at the fifty
seven oh one del Mare location did the exact same thing.
This is what we do as far as December comes.
You know, our political our People's Community Action Corporation, we

(04:43):
call it PEA CAC for short. They have been doing
initiatives for Christmas and kiddos and their families for several
several years. What that means is you go to our
website at Pightcenters dot org and you can get online
and you follow what's going on for Christmas. It'll be

(05:04):
something that pops up to you and says, hey, we
got Santa Claus there. We're giving toys away. It's first come,
first served, but we have a lot to give and
that's what we do in year out. We also have
a year end right now, we're doing a food drive
as well. So you come into our lobby. When you
first walk in, there's a table of food sources.

Speaker 3 (05:24):
Just pick it up and go.

Speaker 4 (05:25):
You don't have to ask any questions, just right there
for whoever wants it. We have a clothed pantry, a
clothing pantry. We have a food pantry that operates Mondays
through Fridays. We do utility support. You know, we do
a lot in the community, and so we don't just
want to look at Christmas as being the time for
us to step out we pop out and we outside

(05:46):
January through December.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Now speaking of January through December, as we get ready
to go to the new year twenty twenty six, I
understand you guys have this program or whatever it is.
It's called the College Connection. What is that program?

Speaker 3 (06:04):
Again?

Speaker 4 (06:05):
Our People's Action Community Corporation. This is ten years that
we've been taking kids in the Saint Louis metropolitan area
on a college tour to historically black colleges and universities.
This year is not going to be any different. So
the beautiful part about this that what and this is
going to be We have an information on December tenth

(06:25):
and December seventeenth for parents that's interested, and this is
free for qualifying low income students in the city of
Saint Louis. And I think this year is going to
be Howard Spelman fam You Clark Atlanta. I mean, these
are this is an opportunity for students when we chaperone
them and they don't have to pay for anything other

(06:47):
than what they want to. We get a nice bus.
We had about seventy kids last year. But these kiddos
have changed the game, right, and that's what we do
it again. We think about financial literacy. We think about
future and what that looks like for kiddo's in this space,
because in order to give back, we have to be

(07:08):
that connection, right. There can't be anything in between that
we would be doing ourselves and our community of grave
disservice if we didn't provide the services that we did.
That's why my plea as always come and see us.
Our doors are open regardless of your ability to pay.
We take all insurances we have. If you can't pay,

(07:30):
it's okay, come and see us. We have a sliding
fees scale. We see people where they are.

Speaker 3 (07:35):
When they need it, okay.

Speaker 2 (07:38):
So if people want to get information about all the
wonderful resources and things that you guys have, and the
more information about what you guys got coming up for
the holidays and this college connection tour that you're doing,
is there a phone number website that people can go to.

Speaker 4 (07:56):
Sure, you can call us at three one four three
six seven seven eight four eight. That goes to our
switchboard and that's for Betty Jing Kirk People's Health Center
and then you can just google its Google Betty Jane

Speaker 2 (08:12):

know carer spelled a different way k e r r
cause you know some people think it's yeah, you're right, yeah, no, no, no,
but it's Betty gen Kerr right, k e r r.

Speaker 3 (08:26):
Right, because you know, she was the founder.

Speaker 4 (08:27):
She is the reason why there is a People's Health
Center because of Betty Jene Kerr back in back about
fifty two to fifty three years ago.
