Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hartfeat Saint Louis with akag Holiday bringing you the pulse
of the city.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Hey, what's a little boy? Doctor DJ DJ Holiday? And
as we go through this holiday season, there are a
lot of people in our city that are in need.
And today we're going to talk about a program that's
over at the United Way of Greatest Saint Louis. It's
(00:31):
called the one hundred Needy, the one hundred Needius Cases. Now, now,
I know you think that when you hear that that
they only serve only one hundred Needius cases, but actually
I just found out they help over eleven thousand people.
(00:52):
And in the studio right now, I got Becky White,
who is the program manager for the pro that's called
the hundred Needius Cases of the United Way of Greater
Saint Louis. How are you doing today?
Speaker 3 (01:07):
Hey, I'm good. How are you?
Speaker 4 (01:08):
I'm doing good?
Speaker 3 (01:09):
Thanks for having us.
Speaker 4 (01:10):
Thank you for having a simple name, because I've butcher
names our career.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
You know, some people have these names when they come
in the studio and they spell it one way, then
they expect for me to say it another way.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
By having a simple this is a simple name here
to help here.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
So let's talk about the program one hundred Needius Cases.
What is that program and.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
And why do we have it?
Speaker 5 (01:40):
You had so for more than a century in the
Saint Louis region, the one hundred Medius Cases has been around.
We help folks during the holiday time and we are
our name is one hundred Medias Cases because there's a
hundred cases that we published and those are the kind
of the ambassador cases. Like you mentioned, we're helping eleven
over eleven thousand people this year. That's over five thousand
(02:04):
cases that we are helping with things like rent, utility
bills and also toys and just that holiday gifts. And
it's a great way if you have somebody that you're
shopping for that has everything that's hard to shop for,
you can give a gift of hope through one hundred
Needius Cases and given their honor.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
All right, now, let's talk about that gift of hope.
What is the gift of hope?
Speaker 5 (02:31):
So the gift of hope, it can be different things
for different families. We have a lot of folks who
this year were affected by the May sixteenth tornado. About
eight percent of our cases mentioned that as being one
of the reasons that they need some help this year.
And so for some of those families, the gift of
hope is some help with rent or utility assistance or
(02:53):
groceries even you know, we're all kind of feeling that
things are crossing a little bit more and when you know,
you go to pay bills and that sort of thing,
a little bit of help makes a huge difference. And
so the gift of hope is when you get the
chance to make that gift and help somebody out that
(03:15):
they may not be able to pay that bill without
some help from one hundred Needias Cases.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
Now I'm looking here. You guys got something going on
with Amazon. It's like a wish list or something. Yeah,
people have said, hey, here are some of the things
we would like to have for the holiday season.
Speaker 5 (03:32):
Definitely, So there's lots of different ways to give to
one hundred Needias Cases. And our Amazon wish list is
on our website. You can visit us at one zero
zero Neediest Cases dot org. So one hundred Neediest Cases
dot org. You just click the button and on our
Amazon wish list you'll see things like household essentials like
(03:53):
toilet paper and Kleenex and detergent, and you know that's
a gift that you know, when you hope with something
like that, it can also be a gift of dignity
because having clean clothes, having the things that you need,
you know, just a tissue that you know that can
make a difference just when you need it.
Speaker 3 (04:14):
You need it exactly me.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
A bar, soap or and a lot of times, you know,
people they don't understand how important it is for some
people to have some of the things that we have
because a lot of a lot of times and a
lot of cases, people take things for granted. You know
what I mean, you bad And I'm sure that it
was an eye opener for the people on May sixteenth,
(04:37):
you know, when their houses were destroyed. They're trying to
figure out, you know, uh, where they're going to stay?
You know, uh, you know how am I going to
get my house fixed?
Speaker 1 (04:47):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (04:47):
You can my house be fixed? You know where I
have to find some money to buy a new house.
You know that let alone, when you think about it,
a lot of people lost lost everything. So the idea
that you have this program the hundred's neediest cases and
the people are able to do the gift of hope.
Now I want to I want to go back to
(05:09):
it now. Say, for instance, I'm like, you know what
my kids have like everything? You know, you know, they
just got it all. They just live brats, you know
what I mean? I would say it they brats, they
got everything. So I'm trying to figure out what can
(05:29):
I do for my child that will be impactful back
to the community. Am I able to do like a
gift of hope for them?
Speaker 5 (05:38):
That is perfect? So again, visit our website. You have
the opportunity to adopt a family if you want to,
and so you can work with our volunteers. They kind
of do the matchmaking, if you will, between our donors
and our families that are asking for help. And a
lot of people choose to adopt a family that have
kids the same age as their kids, and so through
(05:59):
give this gift of hope, they are teaching their kids
the power of giving, the power of philanthropy, and they
also have the chance then to make a difference for
a family who really needs that help. And so it's
kind of a win win for everybody because you get
to shop for that family. Our volunteers will send you
(06:20):
information about what that family's needs are, and that teamwork
that with our volunteers with our agencies, with our families,
and our donors is what it's all about.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
It's each of us.
Speaker 5 (06:32):
Doing our part and working together to celebrate this season
of giving.
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Now, you know, like you know, like a lot of
people don't mind you know, like giving.
Speaker 4 (06:42):
You know, that's one day, but the one.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Thing they go, Okay, So if I give one hundred
dollars or I give two three thousand dollars, you know,
where where does the money go? Does the money go, well,
one hundred percent to the people that I'm trying to
give it to do somebody say, well, we got to
pay our paychecks out of it.
Speaker 5 (07:03):
That's one of the unique things about one hundred neediest cases.
Because all of our administrative costs are paid by the
United Way of Greater Saint Louis and then also our
sponsor to the Saints Post Dispatch, one hundred percent of
what we raise goes directly to the families in need.
And so actually next week our first check run will
go in. Every single one of those five thousand families
(07:26):
will receive a financial donation and that helps with things
like that holiday grocery bill, getting gifts and that sort
of thing. And then on top of that, some of
those families get adopted as well, and that's where you know,
the shopping trip with the wish list is included. But
all of that overhead and salaries and all of that
is already taken care of. So everything we raise goes
(07:49):
directly to the families that are in need.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
All right now, if you can do me a favor,
give me that website once again for people who maybe
want to donate or participate in the one hundred Needy
Cases of the United Way of Greater Saint Louis and
you know, due to gift to hope.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
If you're that website once again, sure.
Speaker 5 (08:09):
Come and visit us at one hundred Neediest Cases dot
o RG so it's one zero zero Neediest Cases do
o org and you'll be part of the tradition.
Speaker 4 (08:20):
All right. Well, Becky White, thank you so much for
coming in the studio today.
