to Hell Frozen Over with Sun Devil head hockey coach
Greg Powers live from the new Willie's Taco Joint at
the Vibe Hotel in Tempe on Fox Sports nine ten
and the iHeartRadio App. Welcome to the course light first
period of Hell Frozen Over now alongside Coach Powers the
(00:24):
voice of Sun Devil Hockey Tyler Paley.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
On this Tuesday night, the Sun Devils are feeling good,
coming off their best and most complete game of the
season thus far. The team went to North Dakota searching
for answers and certainly found some of them. But this
celebration is now over and it is full steam ahead
with Denver coming to town this weekend. Hi, everybody, welcome
into season four, episode five of Hell Frozen Over. It's
(00:48):
your source for the latest Sun Devil Hockey news and
note streaming tonight on Fox Sports nine ten and the
iHeartRadio App. I'm Tyler Paley, the play by play broadcaster
for Sun Devil Hockey, and we are live from Mullet Arena,
Tempe for our final show until January. Joining me tonight
in every show this year, my broadcast partner Alex Coyle
and ASU head coach Greg Powers coach before we get
(01:10):
into recapping the Colorado College and North Dakota series, can
you believe that we are already just shy have a
third of the way through this season.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
Yeah, I mean it goes by quick. You know. We
tell the the players that every year, enjoy it, enjoy
it and enjoy every moment. And you blink and you're
a junior. Then you really blink and you're a senior
and you really blink again and it's over. So yeah, exactly,
you don't want to do that. So yeah, it goes
by quick and and and you just have to really
make the most of everything you can.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Overall, aside from you know, the rocky start in terms
of record. Are are you enjoying the season so far?
In the progress you're seeing from your team?
Speaker 3 (01:46):
Yeah, I mean it's it's a really good group of kids.
We've established that we're young, you know, so it's it's
it's just we got to be processed, focused and continue
to try and get better every day. It's it's cliche,
and you hear every coach say that you want to
get better every day, but I think we have and
you know we're right there, we're close to breaking through.
(02:07):
You know, you win the first game of Miami and
you don't get a sweep, and you have a big
comeback and win in a shootout against CC, and you
lose a tight one and don't get a sweep, and
then you're tied going into the third at Noteak, you know,
and and and have a bad two minutes to start
the third, and then you find a way to get
a big win on Saturday. So you know, we feel
(02:28):
like that win we can springboard and that's the plan.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
All right, let's get into uh game one against Colorado College.
We'll rewind a bit you mentioned it, but you guys
come out flat to start, really turn it around in
the second and third periods to tie the game with
about a minute and nine seconds to go in regulation.
Over time came up empty. Then you guys won too
nothing in the shootout and get the extra point for
(02:52):
that game. How proud of you of your guys were
you to see them kind of grind that one out
and get those two points?
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Really proud? I think, I think from a just an
effort and you know, a grit standpoint, that that first
period is probably the worst period that we've had in
this building, you know, I mean you look back, there's
been been some some not so great ones. Obviously, the
first period in the game two against the luth last
year wasn't great, but the one against CC felt different.
(03:22):
And we were down three nothing. There was no energy,
there was no juice, there was no you know, you know,
swing back, you know, or there was no fight, and
and so to come in and reset and and go
back out and and find a way to tie it
up and winning a shootout was really impressive. And I
think I think it just proved that we have it.
(03:43):
We have to do it more consistently. Obviously in over
sixteen minutes, but really proud of for bouncing back there.
It was it was a really fun, fun way to
come back and and in the nature that we did,
and I think everybody was really happy about it.
Speaker 4 (03:57):
Hockey is such a momentum ridden game, and momentum can
be flipped really quickly with it with something like effort
or something else. The it feels like though the team
is struggling to find momentum one game to the next.
With the young group, how close do you feel like
your group is to continuing to push and getting it
not only game to game, but then weekend and weekend.
Speaker 3 (04:18):
Yeah, I mean there's been there's been so many instances
this year where there was winning the icebreaker and not
you know, parlaying that into success at Augustana, whether it
was winning on the road in the first NCHD game
in Miami and not parlaying that into success the second night,
whether it was coming back down three CC and then
not not doing it the next night. But I think
(04:40):
that you know, winning on the road at North Dakota,
great team, great program, unbelievable environment. You guys experienced it.
We had never done that before and it was obviously,
in my opinion, the best team we played this year
and certainly the toughest environment. So to come back and
get that win on Saturday, you know, our guys know,
they know they can do it, know we have what
(05:00):
it takes in here. There's never been a lack of
belief or faith or you know, anything like that. It's
just it's just going through those experiences together and knowing
that you have what it takes collectively to get through them.
And we've proven that we do. So now we have
to go you know, and then obviously another unbelievable team
coming in this weekend. But you know, you went up
(05:22):
there in the nature that we did, and after everything
that we've kind of been through it, hopefully we can
we can really use that to our advantage moving forward.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
I know you covered this from kind of a macro
level just now, but I'm curious, like when you look
at game one to game two against Colorado College, what's
the difference there and what happened Saturday as opposed to
you know, what you guys were able to do on Friday.
Speaker 3 (05:45):
I mean, we actually played a better game on Saturday,
We played cleaner. It was very even. You know, it
could have gone either way. We we took a really
dumb penalty that cost us and and we put it
on our own net, and that was the difference. So
both goal were tremendous, Both goalies were really good. I
think the chances were dead, even shots are pretty much
dead even you know, so so nothing I think, just
(06:08):
just you know, continuing to really you know, make our
guys understand, like we have to cut out the young
un you know, self inflicted wounds, you know, and and
we still have those in our game unfortunately. And you
saw that Friday night, you know, to to two going
to the third, make a couple of mistakes early ends
up in the back of our net. Even Saturday, you know,
(06:29):
I mean, we we're up three to one, we start
the period really well, we get a two on one,
we don't score, and then we have a guy fall
down at the blue line, and and and they cut
it to three too. But you know, it's it's that
next shift mentality that we've been talking about for now,
for for two months, and that's all we talked about
on the bench. Hey, it happens, we made a mistake,
(06:51):
they put it. They put it in the back of
our net. We're up three to two. We would have
taken this, you know, and it's next shift, next shift,
next shift, good or bad. It has to be next
shift mentality. And that's what I think our guys did. Yes,
you know they're talking about shot count and and and whatever,
but if you look at great A's in that third period,
we actually had more and our guys played really well
(07:12):
and they got through it and has it was great
and it was a great win that nobody can take
away from us.
Speaker 4 (07:17):
The the idea you know of of coaching hard and
continuing to press into identity. You leaned on the group
quite a bit between games on Friday to Saturday, knowing
and trusting that your team is going to respond to that.
Is that something you recruit to or is that something
you had to feel out once the guys get here.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
Yeah, I mean, look like I I it is what
it is, And I am when I am like God,
I'm going to tell the truth, you know. And I don't.
I don't sugarcoat where we are and what we need
to do to anybody. Whether it's press conferences, whether it's here,
whether it's in the room, whether it's one on one
watching guys shift with them in my office, You're gonna
get what you get. And and and I think that
(07:58):
that's what is needed in order to get this team
to where it ultimately can go. And and yeah, I
mean like it was, it was. It's been a lot
of honest talk and conversations over the last you know,
two weeks to to to be I believe in what
we have here, you know. And and right now, collectively
including myself and everybody in this program, you know, we're
(08:22):
not happy with what our record is. We're not and
and and and the only way to fix that is
to be honest with yourselves and and uh and move
forward together, you know. And that's what we did and
and it worked and and hopefully again it parlay isn't
a more success on Friday.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
And I think, you know, we hear from guys when
we have them on this show. We talked to them like, oh,
why j ultimate come here honestly from the coaching staff
is one of the first things that they mentioned.
Speaker 2 (08:46):
Yeah, and it does come from a place of love.
Speaker 3 (08:50):
I trust rights, Yeah, I mean, I think I think
when you when you stop being honest and you start
blowing smoke, that's when you lose trust, you know. And
I've had plenty of players over the last eighteen years
say like, hey, you know, you're raw and and you're
emotional and you care and at the end of the day,
we'd rather have that than the other way. So it is,
(09:12):
it is what it is, and I am what I am.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
When you look back at the North Dakota series, obviously
a frustrating loss on Friday after tying it, you know,
following two periods of play and then come out with
that win, I know your your goal is always, you know,
sweep at home split on the road. Ideally, you guys
got that split. Are you looking back on that weekend
positively or or perhaps not?
Speaker 3 (09:35):
I think you have to. I mean they're they're really good,
you know, And I mean they're a very very good
hockey team, and it's not easy to win up there
at all. And you know, you go on the road
in this league and really anywhere, if you go on
the road and you split, you're happy. You know, you
never want to come home with no points and we're
able to get a regulation win and three points feeling
(09:58):
really good about where we are heading home on Saturday night,
heading in this week. And if you get the split,
you always want to get Saturday, not Friday, because you
go into the next week feeling a little bit better
about yourselves. But yeah, I mean you have to be
happy with a split. It doesn't mean you can be
content with it. We have to to get back into
the equation and where we want to be, start to
(10:18):
get some sweeps, you know, And we know that that's
a position we put ourselves in. We put ourselves in
that position last year and we were able to do
it and that's what we need to do moving forward here.
So it's one game at a time, and we're focused
on getting Friday and we'll worry about Saturday.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
The top end guys have been consistent, they've gotten it done, Cruise,
Lucius and Bene Schimmick especially, But I think the guy
that maybe made the biggest difference or at least popped
the most to compared to what he's done so far,
no appoll in that game on Friday. What did he
do or Saturday? Yes, what did he do particularly well?
And how important can he be.
Speaker 5 (10:53):
For the group?
Speaker 3 (10:54):
He's such a good hockey player. When he's engaged and
he's moving his feet and he's physical, nobody wants to
play against him. He's big, he's strong, he's mean, he's
got hard skill. He's a really really good player. And
he got scratched two games in a row to kind of,
you know, find himself and recalibrate and reset in every way.
(11:15):
And what he showed us on Saturday was was everything
that we knew we were going to get and recruited
and had hoped for. And you know, he gave us
so much life and energy. His stick was good, he
was all over the ice, he didn't stop moving his feet.
He had a couple of scoring chances. He was great
in the ford check. He had some big hits. He
made a huge difference and and so it's just encouraging
(11:39):
that to come out more consistently. And if it does,
it's gonna be a huge shot in the arm for
this team and give us a ton of confidence.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
Do you like that of him with mo?
Speaker 3 (11:48):
Yeah, it was our best line. I mean we we obviously,
you know, I think they got the most five on
five ice. I felt really good with them on the ice.
They're big, they were moving their feet, they were playing
the way that they need to play in order to
be successful. And that's a line with with you know,
six four six two six three all over two hundred
(12:08):
and ten pounds that if you're going like, nobody's gonna
want to play against that, you know, And so you know,
it's an identity line. And Saturday they gave us a
really good, you know, hard identity that this team needs
and that's what we're going to be looking for from
moving forward.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
Last thing for me on the on the North Dakota series,
I'm curious, at the risk of you know, ticking off
some North Dakota fans, what'd you uh, what do you
think of the environment at the route.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
I thought it was good. I mean, look like, thirteen
thousand people, beautiful building, passionate fan base. Yeah, it was good,
you know it it was. It was good. Was it intimidating? No,
I don't think it was.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
Didn't feel that way to me.
Speaker 3 (12:52):
You know, I don't think it was. I mean, I mean,
but like you don't know, I don't. I don't think
you could ask me about any environment and I would say,
if it's not intimidating, I think you have to be
mentally strong enough to use any environment you play into
your advantage. And that's what we encouraged our guys to do.
Use the energy to give you juice and motivation and
play well. And I think our guys did that really
(13:15):
minus a period. But you know, it's a they're they're
a great program, great fan base, very passionate group of people.
And it was a fun trip.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
Yeah, certainly was all right. Last one for me before
we take a quick break. It seems like you have
a goaltending problem and and in the best way possible,
I mean, uh, the third of the way through the season,
you've got two really good options and herbs and has
what what's your assessment of your goaltending do well right now.
Speaker 3 (13:39):
Look, I again, to be honest, we've had it the
other way around, ye, and that's no fun. And to
have two guys that you can rely on in any
given night is such a luxury. And I've said it,
and it's not coaches speak, it's not bs. We have
two number ones in this room, you know. And and
they're both good enough to start, you know, thirty games
a season, and Passes already done that at this level.
(14:01):
He showed why he's so good on Saturday night. Herbs
has already shown why we're so excited about him now
and into the future. And now we just have to
manage it. And and and the nicest thing about both
of those kids is they really genuinely support each other
so much. Nobody was happier on our team or in
that building for Has when when when or for for
(14:23):
Has went then Din sam Irban, you know, Herbs gave
him the fork. He was really happy for him. They
support each other so well. You know, when when Herbs
played really well here against c C, Has was equally
as happy for him. Uh. And that's what's gonna advance
this team, is that support from within it's genuine and
and we need these guys to continue to do that,
(14:45):
and they're they're great examples of what we want Sun
levels to be all about.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Have you decided on your starter for Friday yet?
Speaker 3 (14:50):
Nope? I have not that I really haven't. And so
it's just it's just gonna be a gut feel and
and right now you know, we've gone, we've gone, We've
split weekends with them, and and that's seem to go
pretty well. It doesn't mean that that's going to be
the case, you know, every weekend moving forward. But if
you had a gun to my head, I'd say that's
probably what we're gonna do.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
All right, Well, no gun to your head, fortunately, and
all it takes is one game to really turn things
around ASU, of course, hoping that that game against North
Dakota is that turning point. We will preview ASU's next
series coming up in the third period. Up next, Sundavil
forward and co captain Bennett Shimick joins us to discuss
his hot start, along with leading his team through some adversity.

You're listening to Hell Frozen Over with sundevilhead hockey coach
Greg Powers. Let's start the topo Cheeko Hard Seltzer second
period on Flox Sports nine ten and the iHeartRadio WAPP.
Speaker 2 (18:47):
Thanks for sticking with us for our the second period
of Hell Frozen Over. It's our hour long show talking
all things Sun Devil hockey. Tonight we are live from
the locker room here at mullin Areena, our final show
until Tuesday, January sixth, So wishing all of you a
happy holiday season. With so many underclassmen on Arizona State's
roster this year, the Sun Devils needed some consistency year
(19:09):
over year, and so far there's been nobody more consistent
than co captain Bennett Shimmick, the ncchc's leading returning point scorer,
picked up right where he left off, and he's been
a pest for opposing teams through twelve games. Shim joins
us now on help frozen over, appreciate your time, thanks
for being here tonight.
Speaker 12 (19:25):
Yeah, thanks for having me on.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
All right, So first things first, give us a vibe
check on the guys who occupy this locker room right now.
Coming off a huge win, after that tough start through
the first eleven games, how's the feeling in here right now?
Speaker 13 (19:36):
Yeah, I mean, obviously, you know, not the start we're
looking for, necessarily, but I think getting one up in
Grand Forks last weekend was hopefully a big turning point
for our group, and I think guys are just really
looking to get back up on the ice Friday Saturday
to kind of build off the momentum.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
All it takes is one right, exactly, hope.
Speaker 3 (19:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (19:55):
From a leadership standpoint of course, you know, it's really
easy to seems to lead when things are going right,
when everybody's pushing in that right direction. When you were
named captain, I'm sure you thought about, you know, all
the good things lifting trophies like you've already done so
far this season and a slow start. An underrated part
of a leader is what they're able to do in
(20:16):
the rough times. How have you guys navigated the rough.
Speaker 5 (20:18):
Time so far?
Speaker 13 (20:19):
Yeah, I mean, obviously, you know it, like I said before,
you know, it wasn't the start we were necessarily looking for.
And I think, like like you said, you know, when
I was named co captain, you know, I was looking
forward to, you know, lifting the trophies and you know,
being a leader of you know, a really great team.
And unfortunately that's not the start that we had. But
I think Cole and I have had a really good
have done a good job navigating the rough times and
(20:43):
kind of getting guys to see the light at the
end of the tunnel.
Speaker 4 (20:45):
I will say, though, like it sounds like this though
that make those trophy raising portions and the celebratory moments
mean that much more later in the season for sure.
Speaker 5 (20:54):
For sure.
Speaker 13 (20:55):
I mean you're gonna face adversity at one point or
another in the season. So I mean, I think we're
looking at it like, you know, we're happy we got
out of the way early and we're kind of looking
towards the good times now. But obviously it's you know,
it's it's not easy to delete a team, uh, when
you have kind of a slow start and a very
young group that you know is inexperience and you know
(21:15):
hasn't seen a lot of these things in college j hockey.
But I would say, you know, the the other captain's
it's done a great job as well kind of keeping
this group together, and I think everybody in the room
is feeling a lot more confident and ready to go
this weekend.
Speaker 2 (21:29):
On that same note, how do you how do you
kind of stay positive because you're a guy who's who's
been there, done that, right, like you've you've been at
Providence where you guys had success. You come here last year,
we saw the success you guys were able to have
after another rough start. How do you use those experiences,
which is something coach Powers has been saying for for
weeks now, using those experiences to turn things into a
positive and an opportunity more than it is, you know,
(21:52):
an inconvenience or or frustration.
Speaker 13 (21:55):
Yeah, I mean, I think it's awesome for for a
lot of the guys and a lot of the new
guys that haven't seen you know, a lot of things
in college sports. To take a look back at, you know,
our team last year. You know, obviously we were kind
of looking to avoid that, you know, coming into this year.
But but guys, you know, they can look back and
(22:16):
see that, like, you know, we've done it before and
it's possible to kind of dig ourselves out of this hole.
So I think that just gives guys kind of extra
boosts looking around and looking past the last season.
Speaker 2 (22:26):
I want to turn to you individually, they say, and
I'm sure you've heard this, saying that an apple a
day keeps the doctor away. And it certainly seems like
you must be in perfect health because you're averaging more
than an assist per game, one point five points per
game up to this point, really lighting up the score sheet.
And and it was no different up in North Dakota,
especially in game two when you had that incredible performance.
(22:48):
What's working well for you this year or is it
just much of the same year over year.
Speaker 13 (22:53):
Yeah, I think it's just kind of you know, I'm
trying to just be consistent on enough d ice, you know,
sticking to my routine, sticking to what I do, and
kind of just letting the going out there and playing
playing my game and you know, hopefully it works out
for me.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
Yeah, you know, brag a little bit. Come on, one
and a half points per game the twelve. That's not nothing.
Speaker 13 (23:10):
I mean, this isn't gonna help me out here. But
I mean when I'm playing with Cruise and Sean and
and I mean the power play has been great. Uh,
you know, it makes it easy on me. I mean
those guys are so talented and you know, if I
give it to him, you're usually gonna do right thing.
And I mean the way Cruise is shooting the puck
right now, yeah, helps helped Hi out with an the
assist category a little bit.
Speaker 2 (23:27):
We had him on a couple of shows ago and
he had nothing but good things to say about playing
with you. So yeah, I know, you guys have known
each other very long.
Speaker 12 (23:33):
Yeah, yeah, a long time.
Speaker 13 (23:34):
And just having that chemistry with I mean we've been
practicing together for uh, you know, all the year. And
I think him being back to full strength is a
big thing too. And uh, I mean we've played with
each other since we were twelve thirteen, So yeah, kind
of knowing where he's on the ice doesn't doesn't hurt.
Speaker 12 (23:51):
And then you know, when I give it to him,
I know he's gonna put it in.
Speaker 4 (23:53):
Yeah, but you guys are doing things that you guys
were doing in practice when you guys were younger on
air now against the best hockey players in the country.
Speaker 5 (24:01):
How fun is that?
Speaker 12 (24:02):
Yeah, it's awesome.
Speaker 13 (24:02):
I mean it's a dream come true to be honest,
you know, I don't think if you would have told
us back when we were twelve thirteen that you know,
this would ever be possible or you know, could ever
be a thing.
Speaker 12 (24:14):
I remember we were younger and we committed a different
school as.
Speaker 13 (24:16):
That, you know, when we graduated Gentry, we kind of thought,
you know, that would be the end of the line.
And then to have an opportunity to come back to
Arizona State and and play together again was just, you
know something I don't think either of us, you know,
ever thought it would be possible, and you know we
couldn't turn it down.
Speaker 2 (24:31):
Yeah, something you guys couldn't pass up. You mentioned the
power play a moment ago, and I did want to
ask you about that. You're no stranger to that unit.
But over the last couple of series, you guys have
had five forwards, including yourself on your first unit. It's
worked well from a production standpoint, but how does it
change the dynamic of that unit and kind of allow
you guys to have more of a buzz as five
(24:51):
attackers out there?
Speaker 12 (24:53):
Yeah, I mean.
Speaker 13 (24:55):
I think I think everybody's comfortable playing anywhere. And I mean,
obviously it's just my first time running the top. Actually,
funny enough, I ran the Top when Cruise and I
were fifteen full. Yeah, so when the idea was kind
of floated past, I was like, you know, why not
done it before? I was seven years ago, But I've
done it before.
Speaker 5 (25:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 13 (25:16):
But I mean, all those guys are so smart and
they can play anywhere. So having five guys, and I
think five offensive minded guys out there really helps. And
I mean all five of those guys are just killers too,
so when they get a chance, they're not going to
miss often.
Speaker 2 (25:31):
And you guys were looking for that spark on the
power play unit. I want to rewind for a moment
back to that North Dakota series tough Game one, after
tying the game in the second period, but then just
a fantastic effort on Saturday. What was your attitude, what
were your teammate's attitudes from Friday into Saturday that kind
of propelled you guys to be able to split that
series as opposed to to going home without a point.
Speaker 13 (25:52):
Yeah, I mean, I think throughout throughout the whole year,
I mean, we've been so close and I think everybody
in our locker room believe we can play with anybody,
and I think we proved that again on Friday night
through forty minutes that you know, I mean, we kind
of came out a little slow, feeling out at the arena.
Speaker 12 (26:08):
I mean it's the first time.
Speaker 13 (26:10):
A lot of those guys have played on that big
of a stage, so I think it was a little
bit of fail out process in the first and then
we really found our stride in the second period, and
then obviously.
Speaker 12 (26:19):
The third didn't go how you wanted to.
Speaker 13 (26:20):
But I think the message going into Saturday it was just,
you know, if we play a complete sixty minutes, you know,
like we can come out here, come out of here
with a split. And that's kind of just what the
message was in the room, and especially going in a
third period on Saturday, it was just, you know, keep
our foot on the pedal and close it out.
Speaker 2 (26:38):
Well, now you have that to build off of Beyond
that series too, so certainly an advantage like between the
between games, especially with all the energy that it took
to come back on Friday night.
Speaker 4 (26:50):
How did you guys find it within yourselves not to
get too low going into Saturday and continuing to believe
because there was every opportunity where could have been a
man and we we tried it again and it just
wasn't enough.
Speaker 5 (27:02):
It's maybe it's just not our weekend.
Speaker 13 (27:05):
Yeah, you know, I think we have a resilient group
to begin with, and uh, you know, when you're coming
in that situation, you know, I was sitting at three
six and one, you know, you don't really have a choice.
Speaker 12 (27:14):
You know, we knew we had to get out there.
Speaker 13 (27:16):
And and get a win on Saturday night or you
know where we keep going a little deeper in the hole. So,
I mean, I think everybody knew the stakes, and you know,
I mean, obviously it's early in the season, but it
almost felt like a must win game for us, and uh,
I think everybody kind of had that mindset going into
the game, and it felt more a playoff game than
a game.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
How How good did that shorthanded empty netterfield? I'll add
another shorty for shimmick becoming like a regular theme for you.
Speaker 13 (27:43):
Yeah, well, I mean, you know, not as how to
start as I did last week. Yeah well, yeah, that
was you know, that was a good introduction to hockey.
Speaker 2 (27:54):
We were like, who's this guy half decent?
Speaker 4 (27:57):
We'll keep Patrick came on to We'll take it.
Speaker 12 (28:00):
That was my first time penalty killing in a long
time too, So that's all I was.
Speaker 3 (28:03):
That was.
Speaker 13 (28:04):
That was a little bit of a nuts start to
my to my asu career penalty kill.
Speaker 2 (28:08):
Yeah, short ended goal, empty net. That was pretty insane.
Speaker 13 (28:11):
Yeah, I mean when I got that puck in the middle,
I mean I was, you know, a lot of times
we don't like to, you know, shoot the puck on
empty net from our side when it's five on six,
but being four on six, you know, I knew I
could go for it, and I don't know, it was
kind of on its edge, and then it took a
couple of skips towards that and.
Speaker 2 (28:27):
We were both holding each other up like it gonna go,
and then it went. We were like, all right, pack
it up.
Speaker 13 (28:31):
That's when it hit the like the blue line. I
knew like, yeah, it's going in and yeah, it felt amazing. Obviously, Uh,
you know, there's a little bit of time left, but
you know, they kind of sealed the deal a little
bit and uh kind of took a side of you know,
the breath of fresh air, and yeah, it was just, uh,
it's a great moment for uh, myself and the team overall.
Speaker 2 (28:50):
Collective sigh of relief over the Maroon and Gold.
Speaker 3 (28:53):
For sure.
Speaker 2 (28:54):
You guys have den for this weekend. It's a team
you're very familiar with. You guys beat three times last year,
but of course they were the ones to end your
season up in Saint Paul. Do you still have any
sort of bad taste in your mouth from that game
or or is that kind of a thing of the
past at this point, you.
Speaker 5 (29:10):
Know a little bit of both.
Speaker 13 (29:13):
I'd say, I mean, obviously we don't like these guys, uh,
you know, having having the history we had against them
last year, and uh, and obviously you know they're they're
a top program in college hockey. So you know, when
you line up against those guys, you know, it just
means a little bit more, you know, knowing what they're
capable of, you know, where the rest of the country
sees them, it means a.
Speaker 12 (29:33):
Little bit more.
Speaker 13 (29:34):
I mean back to last year, obviously they were the
team to uh to eliminate us from what everybody believed
could have been a national championship, you know, winning team.
Speaker 3 (29:44):
Uh So, yeah, I.
Speaker 2 (29:47):
Don't know what else to say, bad taste lingering, but
for sure on the flip side of that, another opportunity.
How are you guys approaching the Pioneers this year and
really propelling into your you know, well into your November
and then December slave of games.
Speaker 13 (30:00):
Yeah, I mean, obviously they lost a lot of guys
uh over the over the offseason, but it seems like
they picked up pretty much better.
Speaker 12 (30:07):
But they left off with with some new guys.
Speaker 13 (30:09):
Uh. So we you know, we know it's gonna take
a full sixty Uh you know, we know we you
know we're not going to get off it, you know,
as easily as you know we may have against some
other opponents.
Speaker 12 (30:21):
Uh, we just have to pull Yeah.
Speaker 13 (30:25):
I mean, like I said, we've got to put together
a full sixty minutes like we haven't done.
Speaker 12 (30:29):
Uh.
Speaker 13 (30:29):
It's probably so far yet this season, and it's going
to take that Friday and Saturday. You know, we know
they're not going to go away they're well coached, very skilled,
So it's gonna take everything.
Speaker 2 (30:41):
It just goes to show to me, like the game
is is pretty simple to understand as far as like,
you know, moving forward and getting these wins right. It's
playing a full sixty and going out there and not
letting up. But it's it's about doing that as opposed.
Speaker 12 (30:55):
To talking about it exactly exactly.
Speaker 13 (30:56):
I mean, I mean, all these teams in our league
are so skilled that I mean, if you let up
the game for a second, you know, you look up
on the scoreboard and off foot one or two in
the nut, which has happened to us a couple of
times this year.
Speaker 12 (31:06):
So we're looking to avoid that.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
And yeah, but that also means you guys have the
same opportunity exactly what we're rooting for. Well, i'll tell
you what. The Sun Devil is very grateful to have
the leadership and the productivity of you, my friend, Bennett Shimmick.
Appreciate you stopping by spending some time with us. We

to Hell Frozen Over live tonight on the Mountain America
Credit Union Sun Devil Radio Network from Mullet Arena. Our
next show Tuesday, January sixth, after the holidays, so we
certainly hope you make plans to listen to us live
here on Fox Sports nine to ten. Coach this weekend,
you preach to your team about being willing to pay
(35:15):
the price. That was your message. You explained some version
of that to us and to a few dozen Sun
Devil fans who made the trip to North Dakota. I'm
wondering if you can explain it to our listeners here
tonight and whether you saw more of it from your team,
especially on Saturday.
Speaker 3 (35:29):
Yeah, I did. It was a step in the right
direction in that regard. You know, from day one. We
have a room full of really talented, skilled, you know,
capable players keyword capable. But in this game, and I
think pretty much in any competition, right, it's not about
what you're capable of doing. It's about what you're willing
(35:52):
to do. You know, what are you willing to do
to get a win? What are you willing to do
to achieve team success in and and that's what it's
all about. You know, it could go so many different ways,
but you have to be willing. You have to be
willing to do anything and everything within your power to
pay the price to get your team a win and
(36:12):
do your do your part. And whether it's going to
dirty areas and and taking a cross check to the
back of the neck to score a goal and and
and making it hurt, that's paying the price. Whether it's
eating a puck with your face, that's paying the price,
you know. And and that's what we're trying to get
this group collectively to do more, and certainly on Saturday
we did.
Speaker 4 (36:33):
You've also mentioned a couple of times that hockey is
the most honest game. What did you mean by that?
And what about the game makes it that.
Speaker 3 (36:39):
You get out of it? What you put in, you know,
and then that's that's what's so great about this this
game is is you know you I just I believe
you earn your puck luck. You know, we haven't had
a lot of it this year, but but but you
earn it when you work. You earn it when you're
willing to pay the price, and and and the more
you're willing, the more you get. This bounces. That's just
(37:00):
the way this game works. It's an honest game, and
you can't cheat it. If you cheat it, you'll have
no success.
Speaker 2 (37:06):
All right, Time to pivot a little bit to our
weekly injury report, trying to be cautious, not to jinx anything,
but do we have any new injuries heading into this weekend?
Speaker 3 (37:16):
Knock on wood, No, we don't.
Speaker 2 (37:17):
That's good news, all right. I asked you this on Saturday.
But Brazen Boser debuted as an alternate captain last weekend
in his home state. Nonetheless, pretty special for him. I'm
wondering if you can expand on what went into that
decision and why you think he's now a valuable part
of your leadership group.
Speaker 3 (37:33):
He's a great leader. He leads by example. He's the
epitome of leading by example. He's not an overly vocal guy.
We have other leaders in this room that were letters
that are vocal, but we needed some leadership on our
back end, you know, in our decorn he's the guy
to do it. He's locking the most minutes. I think
that the young decore really looks up to him, even
(37:54):
though he's young, because he does everything the right way,
you know, off the ice, on the ice, the way
he treats his teammates, the way he treats everybody in
the community. He's just a really good representative of our program.
And he's a kid that I've always looked at as
a future captain, and now he is one, and before
he's done here, he'll he'll wear the c.
Speaker 5 (38:14):
One thing.
Speaker 4 (38:15):
On that back end, you continue to juggle pairings and
try to find that, you know, consistency there for for
fans that are watching the game, what are you looking
for to out out of a pairing to get to
stick together and continue to build well.
Speaker 3 (38:30):
Ideally, we don't like anybody playing on their offhand. It's
really tough to take pucks off the wall, especially in
the ozone, So we like we like lefty righty. Uh
in An ideal world that it doesn't always work out
that way, but just consistency. You know, we we don't
need our D to win his games, but we need
them to kill plays and move pucks and and and
(38:52):
then again that's something Boz brings to us, a level
of calm and efficiency on the back end. He can
break pucks out a number of diferent ways with his brain,
with his feet, and and when you have a player
that does that, it usually can get contagious. And you
can feel our decore getting better every weekend. You know,
they really are. And and that comes with experience, and
(39:13):
that's what we signed up for with a decore that
that that on most nights, the oldest D is Anthony Dowd,
who's a junior. Everybody else is a sophomore or freshman.
So and and on some nights we have four freshmen
in the lineup. So you know, it's it's it's it's
it is what it is. But but but what will
become and what will pay off will be will be
(39:35):
worth it.
Speaker 4 (39:35):
Did you see a pairing that jumped off to you
or orfortable with?
Speaker 3 (39:40):
Yeah, but Bose and Shelley have been really good, you know,
they they've they've eaten a lot of minutes the last
two weeks since they've they've been putting together and the
planned pre season was to have them together. But but
but I think Richie Barron and Shelley were kind of
our top pair before Bow's was was back. So we
left them together because they had some continuity. But you know,
Bo's and Shelley are a pair that they They're in
(40:03):
great shape, they skate really well, they defend well, they
break out pucks, and they're they're a pair that can
eat if you need him to twenty four to twenty
five minutes. Then that allows our other young d to
really settle in and get their reps, but not over
overdo them, you know, and overwork them. So it's working
and and you know, those two of them in tremendous.
Speaker 2 (40:25):
But at least look that Scholber was playing the most
confidence weall Shelley and both. I mean, you could probably
put him out there for fifty minutes to make up
for some lost time. Yes, the first six games, come on,
he's got it. Another leader on this team, the guy
who we just spoke to a moment ago, is your
co captain, Bennett Shimmick. Obviously, a point and a half
per game. So far, He's picked up right where he
(40:46):
left off last year, the ncchc's reading leading returning point scorer.
What does he meant to this group and how do
you evaluate his start to the season.
Speaker 3 (40:53):
He's just such a good hockey player. And what makes
that even more palatable is he's an even better person.
You're people say that all the time. Great player, even
better person, Like he's the epitome of that. He's just
a good, good, good human being. Treats everybody the right way,
whether you're a teammate or just anyone on campus during
(41:13):
the community. He's just a good, a good soul. If
you met his parents, you would know why. Comes from
a really good family. And we're just thrilled he as
a sun devil.
Speaker 4 (41:22):
I asked him last segment about you know, like when
your name captain, you know kind of dream of all
the lifting the trophies and all the good moments and
all that stuff. But where you truly make your mark
as a captain is steadying the ship through difficult times.
How proud of you are your How proud of you
are you of this leadership group getting through the tough times?
Speaker 3 (41:43):
Really, I don't as crazy as it sounds. I don't
know if I've ever been more proud of a leadership
group taking on the task that these these these guys
took on, you know, with seventeen new faces and molding
them together off the ice. It's not easy, you know.
And and they have done an unbelievable job, you know.
(42:04):
And and you know, the the Lion's share of it
obviously goes to shim and and Smolly that that they're
kind of yini yang. And you got Captain Sirius and
and and Bennett, who's who's kind of more of a
people person so to speak, you know, and then Cruz
who's just kind of Joe cool, you know, you know,
happy go lucky, but he's not afraid to speak up
(42:26):
and speak his mind. And and then mcgerrn who's a
new player himself. And those are the four really we
started with. You know, they've done an unbelievable job. You know,
they care so much and they really want to want
to have a great season here before you know, a
couple of them department with graduation. I'm really proud of them.
Speaker 2 (42:45):
You know.
Speaker 3 (42:45):
It's it's a tough, tough, tough thing that they took on.
They've done a really good job with it and they'll
continue to and then I think Boz is really gonna help.
Speaker 2 (42:53):
Did you at all think that either Cruz or Shim
may make that that Spangler Cup roster.
Speaker 3 (42:59):
I think both would have made it, but but we didn't.
We told them no player.
Speaker 2 (43:04):
Could go because you guys have that series.
Speaker 3 (43:06):
We're at Dartmouth, you know, So I mean our season
matters more, and to us that matters more, and and
and and to be fully transparent, neither one of them
I think would want to go, you know, because they
would rather be with our team. It's highly likely we're
gonna be without Pazzi because he's gonna be a World
Juniors and that's a different story. So that that that's
(43:27):
a that's a that's a different stage. You're playing for
your country, you're not playing for a college select team
in the Spangler Cup. It's a great event. It's one
that that we want our program to be a part
of moving forward. But because of the domino effect of
joining the n c HC so last minute, we had
to schedule a certain way and and the Dartmouth series
(43:49):
we owed to them, and and this is when we
could go, So we need to we need to have
all hands on deck. Oh yeah, by the way, they're
six and oh so, so we we're gonna we're gonna
need our top guys go in there and have success.
Speaker 4 (44:01):
But also it's an important non conference for to build
up the resume too.
Speaker 2 (44:06):
Yeah, exactly, all right, before we skip ahead to those,
because I do want to ask about those, but let's
dive into the next series. Denver comes to town. You
guys beat the Pios three out of five times last year.
Of course, the heartbreaker in the NCCHC semi finals the
most recent matchup. Denver has been good this year as always,
just one point left on the table in conference game
so far this season. What else should we know about
(44:26):
the Pioneers coming in this weekend?
Speaker 3 (44:28):
It just as well coached as anybody, I mean, DC.
The job he does with his staff up there is
second to none, and the proofs in the pudding the
results speak for themselves. He's an awesome dude. They're a
great staff and they have an unbelievable program. So are
they younger, yes, so they have a bunch of new guys. Yes.
Did they lose a ton of horses last year? Yes?
(44:50):
But they're clearly still really good. You know, they're Denver
and there's a reason why they have ten national championships
and all the history that they do. I think they're
kind of in the mindset at that program where you
don't rebuild your reload, you know, And so they're a
hell of a team.
Speaker 4 (45:07):
It's one of those where I think the fans are
gonna love the matchup too high flying nature. It's it's
not gonna necessarily be hits flying around. It's gonna be
skilled and all kinds of showcasing of talent, right.
Speaker 3 (45:18):
Yeah. I mean they play a lot differently in the
North Dakota, but they're not fun to play against. You know,
if if you don't commit to defending Denver and and
really having good sticks and killing plays in your D
zone and you know, being aggressive and and and playing
on your toes, you're in for a long night. They
can take hem me in.
Speaker 5 (45:37):
For a while.
Speaker 3 (45:38):
They they're d are really active. I mean there are
two of their they're two top leading scorers are defenseman,
you know, so you know they they generate a lot
of offense from the back end, and you need to
be ready for it.

(46:26):
recovery time, perhaps a good time to get back on track.
Is that how you're kind of looking at the next
six weeks or so?
Speaker 3 (46:31):

on our plate with with Denver the ranked number three

and then and then Ohio State, you know, is the

then at Duluth and another top five teams, So you know,
there's no rest for the weary. The only way you
get through a stretch like this is to go one

Speaker 2 (50:31):
Devil Back at the Mullet for overtime on Hell Frozen Over,
Tyler Paley Alex Coyle having a grand old time after
that Saturday. How was that flight hot?
Speaker 5 (50:40):
So much better?
Speaker 2 (50:41):
Oh my gosh, could you have imagined the vibe on
that flight if it were a sweep? Oh?
Speaker 5 (50:46):
I was just saying leaving grand Ford.
Speaker 4 (50:48):
Oh, but yes, it was so so much better, you know,
with the win and how they've played in to earn
that too, right, Yeah, Like.
Speaker 2 (50:56):
In all seriousness, I think it showed us and a
lot of the fans what this team has the ability
to be. And I think we are among the many
who are hoping that this is truly the turning point
from a rocky start to the season.
Speaker 4 (51:09):
Yeah, and I think it is because you saw the style.
You saw guys that stepped up, but you know, the
shuffling and the line chart two to come up with
that third lined, as coach mentioned in our first segment,
have three guys that are above six two and above
two hundred pounds and play like that too, right. You
know Noah Powell, what he was able to do on
Saturday with his stick and stuff that just immediately popped
(51:33):
up even to us, and you know we were not
close to ice level. So to have the energy from
him and to have them rewarded with a goal to
instilled in the rest of the group that if you
play with that mentality, you're not only rewarded with the
win as a group, but you're rewarded with some stats
as well.
Speaker 2 (51:49):
Yeah's it was a really impressive effort from that line.
I know you and I both really enjoyed all the
time that they were out there, and I would assume
and we didn't get a straight answer from Powers a
little while ago, but I would be very surprised to
see that trio separated headed into this weekend.
Speaker 4 (52:05):
I honestly think you can run the lines back, I mean, right,
because it also is a reward for how they play.
Speaker 2 (52:11):
Sure, right, the only question is who starts a net,
which the only time will tell I suppose. All right,
let's jump into the obvious here. Bennett Schimmick five multipoint
games this year, including a three point night on Saturday.
Cruz Lucius continues his tear through the first third of
the season. Some Devils, I know, we talked about this
a bit. They're now twenty two to one and one.
When he has two or more points in a game,
(52:32):
it's kind of wild. And really, I mean, those two
have been the offensive superstars for the Devil so far.
Speaker 4 (52:38):
Oh and when you look at teams that have success
no matter the sport, no matter what level, it's led
by its leaders. Right, the big time players make the
big time players in big time moments, right, and when
they're on their game and you get the supplemental stuff
from that third line. Like we just discussed, that's a
winning recipe for hockey. So when the captains, when the leadership,
(52:59):
and the guys that are supposed to be good and
racking up those points are and doing it at their
highest level, that's when this group can really go.
Speaker 2 (53:07):
I want to rewind for a minute to the Colorado
College Series, which started out with such promise but ended
up leaving a bad taste in our mouths because Friday,
such a roller coaster, ends with two points, but rather
than a five point weekend with a win on Saturday,
it was a fairly disappointing result. I do agree with
coach Powers in that he thinks Saturday they actually played better,
(53:30):
but again it was just a story of a few
isolated mistakes being the difference, right, and finding that consistency
from the youth on the back end is always going
to be something that.
Speaker 5 (53:41):
You're going to see the entire season.
Speaker 4 (53:42):
It's just about making that quantity a lot less and
seeing that a lot less like what we saw on Saturday. Right,
there was a big time mistake late in the game
from one of those young guys but only ended up
in one goal and not that snowball effect, and.
Speaker 2 (53:57):
They had more margin for Erra.
Speaker 4 (53:59):
They were already up by it that And so you
know the growing pains are going to be there all season,
but you know you're at a point where if you
can create cushion or you can just lower the number
of those, you're gonna feel fine.
Speaker 2 (54:12):
North Dakota. I think we both agreed, and it's hard
not to that that was the best game of the
season so far from the devil's contributions from really up
and down the lineup. And and I mean Connor Hasley,
how bad do you think he needed that game?
Speaker 4 (54:25):
And it was weird, like the way he started the game,
You're like, what, yeah, world right, Like you know it
was one of those goals, was like, was it on him?
Speaker 5 (54:33):
Did it go in and off somebody like that?
Speaker 4 (54:34):
It turns out it was, yeah, but still like just
a weird like wonky, Yeah that went in? How but
to respond and make what thirty nine of his next
forty attempts were all saves.
Speaker 5 (54:47):
That's like.
Speaker 4 (54:49):
Only a veteran can bounce back like that, which is
the value that he brings in, right, And and he didn't,
you know, he didn't wet his pants. He didn't, you know,
continue to put the tail but to his legs in
a tough environment. He just said, all right, that went in.
Now let's go dominate. Well that speaks to the duo
that has been Hasley and Urban.
Speaker 2 (55:09):
I mean you look at the final score on Friday
and you see five goals given up and it doesn't
jump out as like, wow, what a great goalie performance,
but like he did have a fantastic game on Friday,
and following two really good games, you know, against Colorado College.
Speaker 4 (55:22):
So yeah, he looked really good and you know he's
a confident guy.
Speaker 5 (55:26):
I love watching him.
Speaker 2 (55:27):
Yeah. I think both of them will be fine the
rest of the way. All Right, a few seconds left here,
Curious what is ASU need to do against Denver and
then propel them through November and December.
Speaker 4 (55:36):
Yeah, I think continuing to be led in terms of
intent and with identity by that third line, but led
in scoring by the top two. Right in continuing to
make the plays on the boards and earn everything and
play that honest game that will reward you look good.
Denver does not have a great record in this building.
You've been close to sweeping them a couple of times.
(55:57):
Keep it that way and finish the job. Seems like
a good recipe for access to me. All right, Sun
Devil's back home this weekend. Hope you can join us
